Book Description
As the U.S. faces the consequences of its actions during the Cold War in Afghanistan and elsewhere, study of the period becomes more important and timely. More than just a timeline, the Chronology of the Cold War is an in-depth chronological narrative organized in sections. Each section carries a clear date and summary heading. The five major sections are:
I. Cold Peace, 1917-1940
II. The Strange Alliance, 1941-1945
III. Containment and Détente, 1946-1975
IV. Confrontation & Conciliation, 1976-1991
V. Epilogue
Based on sections of the Chronological History of U.S. Foreign Relations (Routledge 2003), the reference includes significant additional material on Russia, China, arms control, and the Cold War in the developing world. This easy-to-use reference also includes an introductory section reviewing the history leading up to the Cold War from 1917 to 1945, a general bibliography of resources on the Cold War, and is illustrated with photographs from presidential libraries.
The Chronology of the Cold War is an essential reference for students, scholars, librarians, researchers, and general readers seeking a straight-forward explanation of particular events regarding the United States, the Soviet Union, and other participants in the Cold War. Also includes 18 maps.

An Excellent book.......2006-10-28
This is an excellent book with both practical steps and the theoritical background.I'm amazed that some of reviewers are complaining about the book being too theoritical, too wordy or too scientific. I assume that the reviewers are dentists,I'm certainly a dentist, and was also an A student. If a dentist has no interest in the science behind the procedure and finds it "wordy and too detailed", the question would be why did they become a dentist in the first place? After all, we are supposed to be scientists too. This book is written by fine practicing clinicians who also happen to be very knowlegable scientists.
Any dentist with passion for dentistry will find this book worth every penny.
Endocure.......2006-08-28
Well written, easy to read, nausiating detail but that is a good thing for a text book.
fantastic text.......2006-02-28
once again, a fantastic text. A great test for endodontic board certification and any endodontist, but the information is too detailed I believe for the general dentist, although it should be able to answer any question the general dentist should have on endodontics.
Boring!!.......2004-05-19
I've never fall asleep reading a book. I fell asleep ready this book twise. BORING!!
It sure is wordy and waistful. I am an average "A-" student and usually don't critize any book but this one I felt that I waisted my money. Content is disorganized. WORDY. This book makes me hate dentistry because of so much garbage is in it, not enough content...
Don't buy this one, you'll regred.
It's got too much word than information itself.......2004-05-12
It had some OK pictures and the context is not well organized.
Paragraphs are too long and doesn't attract readers attentaion because of too much word then the content itself. I met Dr. Cohen in San Francisco and found him to be a good Sales man then a good Doctor or an Author. I've attended his lectures and find him too wordy and not enough meat in his lectures either. Not sure why so many Professor still recommend him.
Personally I think this book should be utilized as recycling item because I didn't get any useful information out of it. Please try to read other dental authors book, for sure this one is NOT the one you really want to read. It's waist of money and your time.

Book Description
December 1967: Richard Burns had just arrived in Vietnam as part of the fourteen-man 101st Pathfinder Detachment. Within just one month, during a holiday called Tet, the Communists would launch the largest single attack of the war--and he would be right in the thick of it. . . .
In Vietnam, Richard Burns operated in live-or-die situations, risking his life so that other men could keep theirs. As a Pathfinder--all too often alone in the middle of a hot LZ--he guided in helicopters disembarking troops, directed medevacs to retrieve the wounded, and organized extractions. As well as parachuting into areas and supervising the clearing of landing zones, Pathfinders acted as air-traffic controllers, keeping call signs, frequencies, and aircraft locations in their heads as they orchestrated takeoffs and landings, often under heavy enemy fire.
From Bien Hoa to Song Be to the deadly A Shau Valley, Burns recounts the battles that won him the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and numerous other decorations. This is the first and only book by a Pathfinder in Vietnam . . . or anywhere else.

childhood friend.......2006-08-09
richie was a friend first and later my brother-in-law. you need to read this book to understand what the brave pathfinders endured. i was very lucky to have personally know him before and after the war. writing this book was both theraputic and heart wrecthing for him but, he knew he had to write it. the big c took his life much too early. rest in peace brother.
Great Audio Book.......2005-08-15
This is one of my favorite audio books. The narrator does a fantastic job.
Excellent, excellent read.......2005-07-23
Great book. Absolutely loved it. Very sad he's gone and won't be able to follow up on the next tour he did.
Great book.......2005-03-24
I was in Vietnam with the 9th Inf Div Pathfinder Det (13 Pathfinders for the entire division) and the 1st Bde 101st. I knew about half of the people that were with Rich Burns at the time, but don't remember meeting him. I can vouch for his accuracy of a lot of what happened during that period of the war.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about what we did. There is a US Army Pathfinder Association that is trying hard to gather more information from those of us that did this job. It's located at www.USPathfinders.org. For those interested, There is a history section that might be helpful.
great book.......2003-09-09

Book Description
Taking its departure from both the Nazi massacre at Kragujevac in former Yugoslavia in 1941, and a moment at the memorial museum in 1985, when a blue butterfly descended onto Burns' writing hand, this profound book crafts living poetry out of suffering and tragedy. Passionate and thoughtful, demanding and rewarding, this moral and joyous work is European in context but universal in scope and relevance.
Book Description
The complete text of the bestselling narrative history of the Civil War--based on the celebrated PBS television series. This non-illustrated edition interweaves the author's narrative with the voices of the men and women who lived through that cataclysmic trail of our nationhood, from Abraham Lincoln to ordinary foot soldiers. Includes essays by distinguished historians of the era.
Customer Reviews:
The Civil War: Retrospective Highlights.......2007-10-11
A great book which covers the highlights of the American Civil War. The book captures the feel of the nation during the war including events leading up to it. Along the way the book covers many of the great battles and personalities involved; from Lincoln, Grant, and Sherman to Lee and Davis Jefferson. It doesn't go into great detail but with broad sweeping strokes brings the war into a grand perspective. It captures all the key high points of the war up to an including Lincoln's assassination and burial. It gives you just enough depth however to be satisfying. Being an avid military history buff I'd highly recommend this to anyone with even a casual interest in the Civil War or American history. This should be required reading for high school history.
The Civil War: An Illustrated History.......2007-03-17
Excellent, in every way and the photos are fascinating.
short history of civil war.......2006-11-06
THE BOOK IS WELL WRITTEN AND LAID OUT. THE PROBLEM IS IT IS A CURSORY REVIEW OF THE CIVIL WAR WITH NO PARTICULAR DETAILS. IT IS A COMBINATION OF THE AUTHOR'S PREVIOUS BOOKS. IT IS USEFUL FOR SUDENTS OR OTHERS WHO NEED A CRAM COURSE IN THE CIVIL WAR FOR HISTORY CLASS BUT IT IS OF NO PARTICULAR VALUE FOR SERIOUS CIVIL WAR RESERCHERS.
An opportunity blown.......2006-06-19
Such a wonderful book has been brought down several notches by employing a reader that puts one to sleep. My travels are made signifacantly more enjoyable by listening to books-on-CD while driving. I've tried several times to listen to the Civil War but had to give it up. Mr. Whitener's voice is so drone and expressionless that I quickly loose interest. Sorry to be so negative, but this CD is very disappointing. Stick to the book.
Civil War CD.......2006-02-25
For Civil War buffs like my father, this came in very handy on his morning and evening commutes. Literally could not stop playing it and currently is listening to it again. It is one of those historical narratives that you could listen to a number of times and hear something new each time.
Book Description
Leading scholars define the special contributions and qualifications of our first presidentWashington's legacy is a successful experiment in collective leadership, great initiatives in establishing a strong executive branch and the formulation of innovative and lasting economic and foreign policies. Along with highlighting these accomplishments, the authors also trace Washington's laterdissatisfaction with public life and the seeds of dissent and political parties that grew from his insistence on consensus. In this compelling and balanced biography, James McGregor Burns and Susan Dunn give us a rich and surprising portrait of the man behind the carefully crafted mythology.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2006-07-10
This book is part of the American Presidents series. As with all of these books, they are well wriiten and very informative about every stage of their lives not just the political. They also inlcude detail that I rarely see in other biographical books concerning the political machinations of their time.
Another good short biography in American President series.......2005-09-09
This book is cowritten by one of my favorite authors from my college days, decades ago. James MacGregor Burns wrote a classic about presidential and congressional politics entitled "The Deadlock of Democracy." That book was about the interaction between presidential and congressional parties and how they act as checks on one another. In this book, we see the formation of our political system. Beyond what the Constitution set forth, the nature of our federal system is, in great part, defined by what Washington made of the presidency. As the first chief executive and a highly popular figure, he was in position to define the presidency for the future administrations. He could have asserted much greater power than he did and he would have been (at least initially) largely unopposed. He was in position to sieze almost monarchal power but in significant ways, he did not. For example, he set the two term custom which held until FDR was elected to a third term. Also, he often deferred to Congress.
On the other hand, in both foreign affairs and financial affairs Washington utilized power when it was unclear from the Constitution, whether such power was intended. The authors point out such example as the taking of an official position of neutralitry in the conflict between Great Britain and France. The Constitution makes it clear that congress issues a declaratrion of war. However, does this also mean that a position neutrality must be declared by congress? Washington's actions made this a presidential power. Also, Washington appointed a cabinet of very able men and they, paticularly Alexander Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury, consolidated significant power in the executive branch. Indeed, there is nothing in the Constitution regarding a cabinet so, Washington's creation this institution set a significant precedent.
In Washington's second term, an opposition party was taking form and this greatly disappointed him since he believed in consensus and felt that parties were harmful. The formation of parties was probably inevitable but Washington almost took it personally, as he hoped his leadership would lead to consensus and he saw the formation of parties as sort of a rejection. In fact, he was a great success since the actions that Washngton took set the precedents for future presidents. As the authors point out so well, "[w]hile future presidents would be respected because of the office they held, in Washington's case, the office would become respected because of the man." For that reason, Washington was a great president.
A Good Beginning To Learn About Our 1st President.......2005-02-19
This book, along with the others in the series, is a short biography of George Washington. There are plenty of other book about him that deal much more in depth, but this book makes for a good beginning.
He was a man of tremendous ambition that was concerned with climbing the social ladder. Indeed, he was one of the richest men in Virginia at the time. But the fact remains that after the end of the Revolutionary War he resigned his commison and went back to his Mount Vernon farm. Instead of taking advantage of his tremendous popularity at a time when he could have easily grabbed a lot of power from the young nation, he wished nothing more than to become a country farmer. That fact tells volumes about his character. How many men would have not taken advantage of the situation?
Not to put him on a pedestal, or portray him as a saint, this book tells of his ambition, his concern with climbing further into the social strata, and also tells of his love for the new-founded country. He was a great man, and totally human.
A good short introduction to George Washgington, and another great volume in the series!
tedious and repetitive.......2004-10-10
I found the George Washington book by Burns and Dunn to be tedious and repetitive. The first part of the book was interesting and covered the subject in an interesting and readable way; I'm surprised that the last few chapters made it into a book in this series. It was a struggle to finish it (I typically read more than 150 books a year without this problem).
I feel that the writers were writing more for their own edification than to inform their readers. I you happen to pick up a copy read page 143 as a "readability" test. I am very surprised that the editors allowed this book to be published with the problems that I perceive.
I've enjoyed other books that I've read in the "The American Presidents Series"; don't let this review influence you on the whole series
pettty, immature academic view of Washington.......2004-07-06
Burns and Dunn seem to think ambition is a dirty word, and that one can't have ambitious goals for oneself combined with modesty. Perhaps they've never known modest, hard-driving and successful men - that is, people with outstanding abilities who want to realize their potential and yet are innately modest. So we get the historian picking on Washington, exposing him for a hypocrite, instead of informing us on what contributed to Washington's outstanding leadership and moral qualities. very disappointing. I quit reading after chapter 3.
