Book Description

The Tiger's Way: A U.S. Private's Best Chance for Survival is not just fun reading for novice riflemen; it is mission-essential information for all ranks and job descriptions. The U.S. military lost on the ground to Eastern guerrillas 30 years ago, and its tactics haven't significantly changed. The Tiger's Way shows how to reverse this trend at a most opportune time. Without better tactical technique at the individual and small-unit level, U.S. forces cannot project minimal force. Without minimal force, they cannot win the hearts and minds of the people. Without winning the hearts and minds of the people, they cannot win a guerrilla war. The Tiger's Way reveals—for the first time—the state of the art in technique for every category of short-range combat. It does so through 100 illustrations, 1600 endnotes, and 31 battledrills.

But the book will also help U.S. forces to suffer fewer casualties in a total war. As Western weapons systems have become more lethal, Eastern armies have turned to tiny, surprise-oriented maneuver elements. Most now give their lowest ranks both conventional and unconventional abilities. Until the U.S. military follows suit, its nonrates will have less field skill, initiative, and tactical-decision-making experience than their Eastern counterparts. That means they will be at a decided disadvantage in any one-on-one encounter and die unnecessarily every time their firepower fails. It also means that their commanders will have trouble winning a "4th generation" war. The Tiger's Way will have a profound effect on how foreign war and homeland security are conducted in the future.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic implementation of Tokakure Ryu for the modern day.......2007-08-12

I have not finished this book, you should know. However, you should also know that this book made enough of an impression of me that I am writing a review before I have finished in violation of my own rules. I am an author myself and I value these reviews greatly - I wouldn't write if I didn't mean what I say.

This is a great book. In short, it takes the premises - as best we know - of Togakure ryu Ninjutsu and applies them to contemporary military arts. Squad mechanics - the focus of every lieutenant who has ever served - are the focus of Poole's tactical revision of the current philosophy of combat in the US military.

I am not a military man, but I am surrounded by them. I am a ninja, studying Bansenshukai Ninjutsu. We also have some Togakure ryu curriculum, and Poole hits hard on the right stuff. Early in the book he points out that the close combat ryuha are not his focus. Instead, he is looking at the understudied arts of Zanson, Intonjutsu, Shinobi Iri and Hensojutsu. This is a book about how to not fight if you don't have to.

Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu practitioners will argue that this `is not ninjutsu' because it isn't what Hatsumi teaches (in public anyway) but they would be wrong. The taijutsu that BBT teaches is just a small part of what the ninja represents, and this book covers practically everything else. Admittedly, the second chapter references books by Haha Lung and Ashida Kim, who are widely discredited. However, even quacks can have good ideas and Poole expertly extracts the choice tidbits. You will not be displeased.

5 out of 5 stars good over view.......2007-05-13

This book is not a guide for people trying to get a grip on what is happening to our forces in Iraq. It is a good basic soldiers book that is made from many different types of 'field manuals', compiled and catagorized. Nothing new, but a good source for a yound Infantry NCO or Commissioned Officer who wants to keep his 'mind in the game'. Much of the information covers Infantry subjects, some of which is of no use in Iraq. However, we are a world-wide force and need to keep looking over our shoulder at the next conflict. The author speaks with some authority and it shows. As a graduate of the Infantry School at Ft. Benning (I wont say when) this book is a good refresher and contains some new information. If you go on patrol, regardless of you MOS or job title, this is a book you cna use.

5 out of 5 stars Best book of it's kind........2006-11-29

John Poole has written a fantastic treatise on what will be needed to fight and win wars in the years to come. Though it makes for dry reading at times, this book is absolutely fascinating. It not only discusses enemy tactics, it recommends methods on how to develop ninjustsu-like tactics on your own. Spectacular book. A must-read for anyone in, or planning to join, the military. Top-shelf material!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for warfighters.......2006-11-28

Readers of this book will look at the Army and Marines different. While the IG and other groups says they care about soldiers the readers of this book will actually care more about the thing that matters: YOUR SOLDIERS LIVES.

Here are two things a possible buyer of this book should consider. In WWII it was thought that the Japanese soldier was born in the jungle. Nothing could be further from the truth. Japan has as much Jungle as Oklahoma. What made the difference between the Japanese and American soldier was training. Their soldiers were taught stealth, hand-to-hand fighting, and all their other combat skills. Little noted in WWII was Japan won land battles against much larger American and British Armies in 1942. Only massive allied firepower turned the tide. Second, in Korea the UN forces often used the machinegun to excess. After a night of fighting the only result would be a few dead communist soldiers. Turkish soldiers, using eastern combat methods, had dozens of dead communists in front of their positions. All were dead by knife wounds.

If this book was followed the results would be nothing but positive things for the USA. First, we would have a better trained Army and Marines that would be able to handle the stress of combat better. We would have less dead men. Second, the Army and Marines could be smaller. We would have more warfighters but less of a logistics tail. Third, we would have less technological dependence. That means a savings of money.

I admire this book. John Poole goes through the combat tables and says what this reader long suspected; we often lose more men in combat with eastern armies. The only real reason we beat German forces in WWII is they wanted to be beat by us, the Soviets were their nightmare. Iraq could have had an eastern army but it was so over controlled and regulated by 2003 that nearly any good army could have taken them.

John Poole says that our infared night vision gear is of limited use. Tanks are not a great asset to any army. Good landmines and RPGs can take out any tank. The weird thing is the US Marines nearly issued the vast store of captured RPGs from Grenada to the Marines. The DoD killed this idea. The reason is American makes superior equipment and all that rubbish...

I really liked this book. This book should be required reading for any member on the House or Senate Armed Service committees. The trouble is our modern politicians are too busy trying to make the mothers of soldiers happy with training and not concentrating on the training of the soldiers to keep them from getting killed and accomplishing the mission.

This is the second book I've read from Poole in a week. It has been sent to my old ROTC school. Perhaps a future lieutenant can take wisdom from the pages of this book.

This book should be the vangard of the change needed in our Army and Marines. We need better training. We need soldiers who can take charge of the tactical situation. We need to get rid of the top-down structure that plagues the Army and Marines in tactical situations.

I wish some good soldiers, marines, and politicians could read this book and put it into use.

Until this book is followed our Army and Marines are little better than Activated Militia.

5 out of 5 stars The Tactical Sphere.......2006-11-17

In our time, we are privy to scores of books, interviews, and op eds dedicated to the strategic sphere of military conduct. Most analysts, those types that enjoy their time on CNN, seek to explain American failures in Iraq and Afghanistan in purely general terms: lack of troops, lack of allies, lack of materials, lack of goals. And while these issues certainly deserve their proper analysis, their role in military failures are grossly exaggerated.

The truth, as the fella said, is in the details. John Poole's The Tiger's Way is concerned with just such details. Poole knows well the tactical sphere: that area where the average U.S. Army infantry private spends his time. He knows and understands the techniques used by "eastern" opponents against Western forces, and he is better at illuminating our vulnerabilities to those techniques than any author in the last 50 years. If this were simply a book on those techniques and exploits, it would be quite a triumph. But there's more.

This book focuses on why our techniques are failing, as well as how they might be tailored to fit in our current environment. Folks like Rumsfeld can talk "light, mobile, and fast forces" all they want, but without applying the dispersion techniques outlined by Poole, maneuver warfare will remain stagnant.

If you are a citizen seeking to better understand what our forces are doing on the ground, and how they might do it better, you should buy this book. If you're a soldier on the ground, you should buy two: one for yourself and one for your unit.

Alexander McCall Smith, best-selling author of the celebrated No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, connects with an entirely new audience with his beginning chapter book series featuring a young African boy fiercely devoted to the conservation of his animal friends. Akimbo lives on the large African game reserve where his father works, and is constantly on the lookout for an opportunity to see or learn something new. In Akimbo and the Elephants, the resourceful Akimbo helps foil an elephant poaching ring by secretly taking ivory seized by the park wardens and offering it to known poachers. When the poachers take the bait and invite Akimbo along on their illegal hunt, the boy slips away from the men and alerts the authorities. In Akimbo and the Lions, Akimbo helps raise a lion cub that is accidentally caught in a farmer's trap and learns the true meaning of s! acrifice when he must release his beloved Simba back into the wild. While Akimbo occasionally comes close to real danger, (an angry bull elephant charges towards him; a cornered lioness threatens him and his father) Smith always brings his small but determined hero safely out of harm's way, having both learned a valuable lesson and gone on a great adventure. First published in the UK in 1990, resourceful Akimbo is being introduced to an American audience for the first time, and will undoubtedly be warmly welcomed by young fans of Ann Cameron's Julian stories, and Paula Danziger's Amber Brown books. --Jennifer Hubert

Book Description

Ten-year-old Akimbo lives on a game preserve in Africa. His father is the head ranger, and Akimbo is eager to help him whenever he can—even if it means getting into some pretty dangerous situations.

In Akimbo and the Lions, Akimbo helps his father set a trap for a lioness that has been attacking cattle on nearby farms. But when the lion they catch turns out to be a cub, Akimbo must find a way to care for the young lion until it’s old enough to be released in the wild.

5 out of 5 stars Akimbo Saves The Day.......2005-10-30

This book is McCall Smith's second book in the "Akimbo" series and like virtually all his books, it is masterfully done. In this book, Akimbo goes on a trip with his father, the new Head Gamekeeper of the wildlife preserve. They have gone to check out reports that a lion is eating cattle. The loss of cattle is akin to the loss of pure gold in Akimbo's part of Africa. Thus, such a lion must be handled.

Akimbo begs his father to take him on the trip. With some trepidation, his father agrees. The team of Gamekeepers and Akimbo travel to the farm which has reported the problem. No one actually has seen the lion, but they believe by the sounds and the results that it is surely a lion. The Gamekeepers set a trap, using a goat as bait. The trap is supposed to work by capturing the lion when he goes to get the goat.

The trap is set up, and Akimbo and his father get set to wait out the night and see what happens. As luck would have it, the lion does show up on that night. The trap is sprung, and Akimbo's father goes to check the trap. As soon as his father leaves the hiding place, Akimbo notices, he has forgotten his rifle. His father approaches the trap, and is dismayed to find, the lion is not in the trap. The lion is standing outside the trap, and starts to close in on Akimbo's father.

Akimbo has never shot a rifle before, but he has observed his father use it. He picks up the gun. He aims, and his father tells him, "Shoot into the air." Akimbo does so twice. The lion leaves quickly. Then they go to find out why the trap di not work, and find that it is sprung. Inside is a very small baby lion cub. The rest of the book discusses Akimbo's relationship with the lion cub, and the eventual release of the lion into the wild.

Once again, McCall Smith has created a wonder of a book. It is highly recommended as a children's story. It provides a look at a very different society and world than the American world. In addition, it shows the respect of the people for the animals. All parents with young children should find this book a great addition to their children's reading library.

5 out of 5 stars Slow Start but Powerful Finish.......2006-05-28

The starting of this book was slow but the speed increased as I went deeper into the book. This is truly another work of art by Wilbur Smith and I give it a lot of credit.Harry Fletcher was definitely my kind of a character and the other characters were definitely up to speed.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding adventure fiction........2006-05-22

I enjoyed this book as much or more than I have all of the other works by Mr. Smith in my collection. I never fail to be entertained by Mr' Smith's stunning character exposition, superb descriptive prose and edge-of-your-seat story lines. I could read a novel about paint drying by Mr. Smith and be thrilled to do so. Eye of the Tiger is an excellent read.

3 out of 5 stars An action-crammed story.......2005-06-30

Harry Fletcher lives a quiet life on St Mary's Island and he takes charters on board "Wave Dancer" for fishing and diving. Angelo and Chubby are his two assistants. But the inoffensive Harry once used to be called Harry Bruce and he used to practice the art of violence and sudden death in Malaya, Vietnam, the Congo and Biatra. Furthermore he used to lift complete collections of gold coins in the British Museum and cut diamonds in Amsterdam and to transport hundreds of millions of dollars worth of gold bars from Switzerland to Rome.
One day three suspicious looking men, Charley Anderson, Mike Guthric and Jimmy North, want to hire Harry's boat claiming that they want "to do a little exploring" and that they need a full array of scuba diving and salvage equipment. Then they hand Harry a chart showing that they are interested in an area thirty miles north of the mouth of the Rovuma River. What are these men after? When they recognise Harry as "the gold heist from Rome", he senses that the stakes are high and that he is sitting in the game with "big boys" once again... One of the best adventure novel by Wilbur Smith.

3 out of 5 stars Close to Cussler but not quite there.......2005-04-17

This was my first Wilbur Smith novel. It falls just short of the talent that Cussler has. While I'm not so disappointed that I won't read more of him, there's just something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. For instance, the treasure is supposed to have been there for "a thousand years," yet the books states that the treasure sunk to the bottom about 300 years earlier.

But anyway, I will seek out other books by him, so I can recommend this book as an entertaining one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Adventure Book! One of my all time favorites!.......2005-04-08

I read this book many years ago when I was a young boy in 8th grade. I read many, many books, the James Bonds, the Clive Cusslers, and most others in the action/adventure genre. I especially liked strong male heroic characters. Of all the books, this is one of the very best. I have read it many times since.

Told in first person, this book features a great hero, some hot chicks, mean bad guys, a treasure hunt, and incredible situations and turns of events that I won't spoil for you.

I rate this as one of the best adventure books I have ever read.

Book Description

Here's the story of how a handful of young Americans, fighting with improvised equipment, commanded the air against superior enemy forces and won! Written by a radio operator who served as a member of the AVG (American Volunteer Group) throughout their existence, this fascinating, intimate story of General Claire Lee Chennault's "Flying Tigers" is loaded with original photographs and numerous first-hand accounts from the author's personal diary. It's all here - the whole story of how the AVG shot down over 650 Japanese plane using obsolete P-40s and a communications network that covered China with a protective "umbrella." This ground based radio network (in which the author operated) kept the pilots so well-informed of enemy air activity that they were seldom surprised by Japanese attacks. Enjoyable to read, this memoir will give you a taste of the "local flavor" of life in China while under Japanese attack. You'll find a musing anecdotes and accurate descriptions of the author's duty as a radio operator as well as the wartime activities of other AVG member. Now, the complete story of the AVG - the deadliest, most efficient group of fighter pilots and support personnel ever assembled - is brought to life again through original photographs and behind the scenes descriptions! Robert M. Smith was a sergeant-air mechanic first class for the U.S. Air Force when the recruiters arrived on base looking for volunteers for the Chinese Air Force. He was discharged from the Air Force and went to China to join the American Volunteer Group, "THe Flying Tigers." When the AVG disbanded in July, 1942 he re-enlisted as a technical sergeant and retured to China with the Army Airways Communications System. Presently he is the treasurer and on the executive committee of the American Volunteer Group Association., over 110 b/w photographs, 6" x 9"

4 out of 5 stars Flying Tigers as seen by Radioman Smith.......1999-02-20

This is a somewhat edited version of Robert M. Smith's diary that he kept during his year with the American Volunteer Group (Flying Tigers). Smith attended college before joining the Army, rather unusual for the time. He joined the AVG for adventure, like most of the pilots and technicians. And he kept a diary, as many of them did.

Smith's diary is especially insightful, and I used it a lot when I was writing my history of the Flying Tigers. He has a good eye for geography; I especially liked his account of driving up the Burma Road to the AVG's home base in Kunming.

I own the paperback; it was chock-a-block with photos, which I assume are included in the Schiffer edition. Good reading for all Flying Tigers buffs.

5 out of 5 stars The story of how radio revolutionized aerial warfare........1998-06-10

Robert Smith gives you the lowdown from the air field on what it took to get the Flying Tigers in the air and to the Japanese bombers before they could strike their Chinese targets. Here is the truly brilliant saga of how Chennault's revolutionary combination of ground observation, central data gathering and fighter scramble turned aerial warfare from hunt and peck to dispatch and destroy.

We take these technologies for granted now, but when Chennault first proposed them he was laughed at by the fledgling air forces that stumbled along between the two world wars with no vision. Chennault had the vision of what modern air warfare would become. He proved it with the Flying Tigers by taking an under-manned, under-equipped, and under-funded unit and making it into the bane of the enemy.

Robert Smith puts you there in the radio room, nursing the equipment, listening through static, sifting the reports and making the critical decisions to scramble the planes. The pilots got the glory. Smith told them where the glory was to be gotten.

This is a little known page in the history of aerial warfare that is told clearly, up front and personal, by a man who was right there in the thick of it.

I heartily recommend With Chennault in China to anyone interested in The Flying Tigers and/or air combat history.

Miss Melville and Miss Manners have a lot in common -- they both hold courtesy to be an obligation and propriety to be an art. But only Miss Melville has to decide the appropriate response to a death threat! And where else but in Miss Melville's New York would Mafiosi, Middle Eastern royalty, and our resident artist share a tea at a home for pregnant teens and chat about the problems of the residentially impaired? With wittier-than-usual writing and better-developed characters, "Miss Melville Rides a Tiger" is one of the best in the series.

"My magic is training.. My strength is adaptability.. My enemy is carelessness.. My strategy is one foot in front of the other.." This is part of the Ninja litany, etched into your mind if you are lucky enough to defeat the opening character, who sets the scene for these Way of the Tiger books. They have the usual ingredients: magic, monsters, Ninja tricks and the most horrific and engaging death scenes, that will have you flicking to the 'eye' illustrations, which mark an unfortunate end (of which, thankfully, there are many) whenever you make a wrong turn in this exciting, engaging "magical world of Orb". But more than that, these books have heart and depth. You can see that the author's have spent countless hours pouring over the plot and creating an imaginary land that stays with me still. A fond reminder of a moment in my childhood, when I'd disappear into these books and take on the adventures of the orphan, a highly trained assassin on a quest for revenge. As if the text wasn't enough, you have it set against the amazing artwork of Bob Harvey, who became on of my favourite illustrators, even though I have never seen his work outside these books.

      Book Description

Just as a car's dashboard serves as its control center, Mac OS X Tiger's dashboard puts you in charge of the info you access from your computer and across the Web. Accessible via a click of a button, Dashboard is home to cool, new JavaScript-based mini apps called Widgets, which can grab info from the Web and provide instant access to frequently used apps. While Tiger comes with a bunch of Widgets, one of the coolest things about them is that you can create and customize your own-and you don't need to be programmers to do so! In this task-based guide, a JavaScript master shows you how to start creating all kinds of Dashboard Widgets-from calculators to stock tickers, contact lists, and more. After providing a quick intro to HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, author Dori Smith shows you how to create your first Widget (a calculator); make that Widget work across the Net (turning it into an international money converter); add QuickTime, Flash, and Java to Widgets; debug Widgets; and more.
