5 out of 5 stars Best Powerlifting Book.......2007-10-17

This book was not only extremely informative, but easy to read! The author's writing style is entertaining. The information included has helped me improve my own performance as well as the perfomances of those I train with.

5 out of 5 stars Starting Strength is Awesome.......2007-10-11

As a strength and conditioning guideline, this is by far the best reference material I've ever read!!! A must buy for anyone serious about conditioning regimes!

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-10-10

This book gives a great base of knowledge about strength building lifts. A must have for any coach, lifter, and crossfitter.

5 out of 5 stars Single best instruction manual on the major lifts.......2007-10-01

I have been lifting weights for almost 40 years. I have a couple dozen books on weightlifting, powerlifting, and bodybuilding which I have read and reread and used in the gym. This is one of the top 3 must-have books for the weightlifter. I bought it over a year ago, and it taught me things about technique that I did not know. For instance, I've always been a very strong bench-presser, but this book taught me that my hands were in the wrong position. Just a slight adjustment, as demonstrated in the book, has taken the pressure off my wrists.

Age has reduced my strength somewhat over the last 5 years. But the excellent explanation of technique in this book enabled me to bring my deadlift weight to within 20 pounds of my top weight from 35 years ago.

But probably the single best part of the book is the extensive instruction on the squat. I'd given up on the squat, using leg press only, for the last 20 years because I kept injuring my lower back. But this book has helped me make some major adjustments in squat technique, from position of elbows (back), to position of bar on the back (lower), to proper flare of the knees (wide). After practicing technique with light weights for a few sessions, everything clicked into place. I've now been squatting injury-free for over a year.

If you think, like I did, that you know how to perform the major lifts, unless you've had coaching or have read this book, you probably don't.

I recommend this book unreservedly, for young and old weightlifters.

5 out of 5 stars Best, most balanced, credible book I've seen.... (ex physiology teaching fellow).......2007-09-06

This book is simply amazing and appeals to a wide audience. This is evidenced by all the 5 star reviews and to my knowledge no reviews marked lower. I was skeptical that it could really be that good, but it exceeded by expectations in every respect.

This book contains very detailed instructions on how to correctly perform the core lifts of the squat, dealift, press, and power cleans. It explains how to do them correctly, why they work, contains good references, excellent diagrams and all the fine points you need to know collected all in one place.

If this book has a real fault, I haven't found it. It is dense with material and as far as I'm concerned worth it's weight in gold. If you are even thinking of performing squats and dealifts without it, I would recommend it as cheap insurance that you get these lifts EXACTLY right.

In addition, Starting Strength is humorous and easy to follow. He takes a swipe at orthopedic surgeons who have never been inside a gym to lift weights or don't understand the biomechanics of proper exercise technique and then goes on to cite the number of powerlifters who do this regularly without any significant back injuries compared to the general population.

This is a must buy for anyone serious about weightlifting. It is particularly useful to hard-gainers, people getting into weight lifting and seasoned lifters who are skeptical of the value and safety of core movements as the basis of building mass.

Book Description

Practical Programming offers a different approach to exercise programming than that typically found in other exercise texts. Based on a combined 60+ years of academic expertise, elite-level coaching experience, and the observation of thousands of novice trainees, the authors present a chronological analysis of the response to exercise as it varies through the training history of the athlete, one that reflects the realities of human physiology, sports psychology, and common sense. Contrary to the one-size-fits-all models of periodization offered elsewhere, Practical Programming explains the differences in response to exercise commonly observed between athletes at the novice, intermediate, and advanced levels, explains these differences in the context of the relevant exercise science, and presents new training models that actually work for athletes at all levels of experience. Complete with new, innovative graphical representations of cutting-edge concepts in exercise programming, Practical Programming is sure to become a standard reference in the field of exercise and human performance. 5 out of 5 stars Sequel to Starting Strength.......2007-09-28

This book is a sequel to "Starting Strength" and focuses on programming of training. When it comes to routines, there is no shortage of them. Open any Men's Health or Muscle and Fitness Magazine and you will find several pages of sets and reps for shouders or abs or whatnot. The irony is that in order to progress, you don't need sophisticated machines or routines. You need free weights and simple short progams. After a while you will need more complex approach, but it still does not have to be rocket science.

This book gives you the approach that will keep you progressing for years and years of training. Most importantly, it lays down the principles of programming of training, and you can develop and plan your own routines, according to your preferences. Training should be fun, and this book follows this adage.

I cannot comment on professional coaches, but for amateurs like me, training with weights, this book and Starting Strength are sufficient in order to keep progressing and enjoy training.

5 out of 5 stars A lot of value for the cost and extremely readable!.......2007-09-22

This book like Mark Rippetoe's others is extremely well-written, dense with useful information and easy to understand. As a former physiology Teaching Fellow and research biochemist I give it my highest endorsement.

With respect to the content, it is well-researched, referenced and gets to the point quickly. Safety and technique are strongly emphasized as well as realistic expectations given your genetics and assuming you are NOT using steroids.

Another author I highly recommend is Stuart McRobert. His books are also excellent and in the same category particularly, Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body and Beyond Brawn: The Insider's Encyclopedia on How to Build Muscle and Might (Brawn). Starting Strength by the same author as the book I'm reviewing is also excellent.

If you want to get BIG, do it safely and use scientifically proven methods using a natural approach I can't imagine any books better than this one and the ones I mentioned above. You don't need anything else... really! I was also a personal trainer at one time and I'm a hard-gainer, you can trust this information.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-02

Very simply- This book covers a multitude of question regarding programming a strength training routine. You will definately learn when you read this book. Easy to understand and a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Strength Training Resource.......2007-06-29

Overall I found this book to be extremely informative and very straightforward. Mr. Rippetoe's style of writing can be understood by non-science oriented individuals as well as science-oriented individuals.

The concepts in this book can be applied to all sports ranging from football to bodybuilding. Not only does he teach you the how, but he explains the why. There is a "why" for novices, intermediates, and advanced athletes.

I truly wish I had this book when I first started training. The knowledge you get from this book coupled with the progress in your own training makes the price a steal!

I highly recommend it. I've used it in addition Coach Rippetoe's book "Starting Strength."

5 out of 5 stars Top 5 Reasons Why Practical Programming for Strength Training is a Must-Have In Your Library.......2007-05-27

I bought Practical programming a few months ago because it came highly recommended from people I trust.

These are 5 reasons you should read this book:

1. Understanding how training affects your body, is a complex topic. This book is simple & easy to understand.

2. It has training programs for beginners, intermediates & advanced. You'll have programs for the next 10 years of your training career.

3. Written by Mark Rippetoe & Kilgore, already reputable for Starting Strength.

4. It will give you a solid understanding of how your body reacts to training. You won't need a coach anymore to make you a training program. You'll be able to do it yourself.

5. Effective training programs are the key to success in weight training. This is the only reason to buy this book. You'll get a proven method that works to achieve your goal. Whether it is strength, speed, power or muscle size, this book will help you.

Book Description

This book provides a unified approach to the different skills and media of new media design. The book is divided into four sections; first issues that arise from designing with new and developing technology are discussed, then the role of the building blocks of new media (sound, color, and animation) in design is explained. The third section of the book covers interaction design, and finally the book concludes with the presentation of the process of design in a practical step-by-step way. For Web and multimedia designers who want to learn about interaction design and how new media can be used today.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Common Sense Advice.......2004-02-04

A nice, nontechnical discussion on how to design an interactive system that typically
is a website. Barfield goes easy on the
jargon. Not your typical acronum-laden
computer book. Some issues of usability
will be familiar to those harking from the
field of industrial design. There, of
course, you design and build something
tangible; that can be seen, touched, moved,
driven or worn. Currently, if you design a
web system, it can only be seen or heard.
Leaving aside haptic (touch) applications,
which are still rare and in their infancy.

But note this. Of all the ways that we get
sensory input, vision has the highest
bandwidth. Which is why the new media
design in the book has so much relevance to
industrial design.

The book has tons of common sense advice.
One item is instructive, because if you
only know English, you may NEVER even be
aware of it. An application should have a
consistent tone of voice. In all other
European languages, there is a format
second person 'you' (eg. 'vous' in French),
and an informal 'you' ('tu'). If your
application addresses the user, it should
use only 1 tone. The closest approximation
in an English application might be between
a formal, pedagogic style and a chatty use
of vernacular.

The only quibble I have is with his use of
'spiritual ergonomics', which he defines as
'the design of all aspects of a system with
the spiritual parameters of the human
mind'. Please! [Eyeball rolling.] The
examples he cites are how you might feel
when using an application, like enjoyment,
humour, fear, prestige. I suggest that
given the examples he cites, a better term
might be 'emotional ergonomics'. It seems
more accurate and does not convey some of
the implications, possibly divisive, of
'spiritual'.

Lon Ornstein might have co-authored a Dummies' book, but he's no dummy. His company is a well-known third-party developer of CRM enhancments - first with the ACT! product line and now Outlook 2007/BCM. Like all Dummies' books, this one is easy to read and understand, and gets right to the "meat" of using BCM. Highly recommended if you're trying to make the switch from ACT!, or if you need to extend the capabilities of Outlook 2007 for a small-midsize business.

Book Description

The Book of Abramelin is the first modern translation of this magical work since Mathers' original translation over 100 years ago. Not only is the language updated, but Georg Dehn, the compiler and editor, has sourced his work from all extant manuscripts, while Mathers used just one.

The result is a stunning new translation that has already set the occult world abuzz. It includes voluminous important material left out of Mathers' work, including an entire Part 2 filled with magical recipes, important distinctions in the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel ritual, and complete word grids that were only partially completed by Mathers. This is an essential work for any serious practicing magician or student of occult history.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Edition of a Classic Grimoire.......2007-09-15

This brand new translation from a newly-discovered German grimoire by Steven Guth and compiled and edited by Georg Dehn makes the Mathers' edition completely obsolete. Among the interesting aspects of the book is a thirty page description of the adventure that led to the discovery of Abramelin Book Four and this new translation, which forms Appendix One, and is entitled THE EDITOR'S QUEST. This shows how many years and how many miles across the world that Dehn traveled to compile the information that led to this most complete edition.

Profusely illustrated and loaded with charts and detailed information, this new book is a joy to read and to use.

Dehn also explains that the real and complete Abramelin ritual series is an eighteen month commitment, and NOT the six months, as previously thought. This three-times longer preparation and study helps the magician to become better acquainted with the material -- and more effective at the magic shown in the book.

Also throughout the book is a running commentary, where various aspects of the operation are commented upon right in the text, and was not merely relegated to some footnotes at the back of the book.

There is a explanation of the word squares, and how to use them. This is explained in the language of today, so it is easily understandable to all who read it. In addition, there are many plates showing actual pages from the original manuscript, which I found to be a nice touch. There are also -- maps, photos, manuscript pages, as well as artistic renderings of some of the principals involved in the creation of the modern-day Abramelin grimoire editions.

I give this my highest recommendation -- and this book is REQUIRED for every serious mystic's magic library.

5 out of 5 stars Not for Everyone.......2007-07-16

Magic means something different to everyone, And everyone who gets into this field does so for different reasons.
This system is very much based in devotion and faith. Which works for me personally. This work is very good and quite profound, but I would not recommend it to many individuals. Not because of the level of advancement or the quality, but because this particular approach is simply not for everyone. I would only recommend this approach to those who are experienced in prayer and devotion and not just general Magical workings.

5 out of 5 stars Better Information.......2007-05-14

This version is much more informational especially the Book 4, where the information in the squares are more complete as compare to the earlier Mather's version.

5 out of 5 stars great edition.......2007-02-19

seems to be the finest edition yet, though I just received it a few days ago, I'll know better when I've finished it.

Scant on details but good for ideas to design and build your own bench.......especially if you have not even seen one before.

5 out of 5 stars The Incredible Workbench Creation.......2007-05-28

There are two categories for this review.

Firstly is the short period of time it took for the book to arrive from America to Australia, being just 14 days. This was impressive to say the least!

The second part is not only the fact that it is a brand new hard back in perfect condition, but that the information inside the book is incredible. this was not my first choice for a work book, but has so far been my best choice.

Recommended to anyone thinking of looking up how to build a work bench - from this group. Thanks guys.

5 out of 5 stars Nice to get ideas.......2007-03-03

This book shows those "I wish I'd thought of that" moments. Very good reference and idea book.

5 out of 5 stars Read again and again and again.......2006-12-03

It seems that I read this book then I am reading another book on the same subject. It never fails but I will have to reread a portion of this book to put everything together so the new book makes sense. Other times I will just have a thought come to mind as I am designing a new bench. A quick scan of this book puts the idea's in order to fit what a customer wishes for their custom bench. Saves making a lot of false steps while building a bench you have not built before.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on workbench philosphy and design.......2006-02-12

This is a great book for what I wanted - a survey and idea book to design my own bench. Essentially the author surveys a number of different woodworkers and what type of benches they use and why. The book is broken down into logic chapters on various components of the bench including the top, base, vises and holding techniques. He covers ideas on how the bench fits in the shop, ergonomics, tool storage/trays, holding wood, and other issues related to layout and placement. It covers some history of workbenches but isn't a history book.

In Chapter 8 he explains his bench design and building process. This is really a nice design and I think I will use it for the basis of my bench. Note as 1 reviewer mentioned that this isn't a very detailed engineering view plan; it contains basic part measurements in a 3-dimensional view. It is enough information to design and build the same bench but you may have to dimension out a few things in more detail when building yours.

The layout and photography in this book are excellent, and the writing style is easy to follow.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very useful book.......2007-04-12

This is an incredibly detailed book, especially in terms of the nutritional needs of horses. The nutrient and ration tables in the back have been invaluable for tailoring diets specific to my horses' needs. My only complaint is that the second edition was published in 1996 and it is getting a bit dated. There is no discussion of the newer "nutraceutical" supplements on the market these days, or new research into topics already covered. I am hoping for a third edition, but I suspect I shouldn't hold my breath.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite horse related book.......2007-02-08

This book is very informative. We have 6 horses with different nutritional needs and this book is my favorite "go to" source. It has lots of tables regarding optimal growth rate, nutrient needs etc. It has a very good section on deworming and much more. There are quite a few nutrition related books for less money, however, they are not as detailed as this one and often they cite this book as their source.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book!.......2000-09-09

This truly tells what to and not to let a horse eat.

5 out of 5 stars This is Practical Invocation using Tarot.......2007-08-20

I been thinking awhile about whether to buy this book or not... I'm glad I did. I must say it offers quite a personal means of achieving a deeper understanding of your mental and especially spiritual self. "The Meditation of the Seer" alone is worth the price of this book!

2 out of 5 stars A little bit of this, a little bit of that...,.......2006-01-12

This book deals mainly with sex magic and getting in touch with your personal Holy Guardian Angel ('Secret Lover'). I liked how this was related to being the Tiphareth Sephirah and also the reflection of Kether. There is much more to be said in this alone. I did like how this book encourages people to go beyond their fear, especially as relates to sexuality and Tantra. For me this was about all I gained from this book.

The author(s) are both learners of Israel Regardie and Aleister Crowley. After reading Christopher S. Hyatt's `Secrets of Western Tantra' (See my review) and being very disappointed, I did not hope much more from `Sex Magic, Tantra & Tarot'. I did find it a little better and have given it one more star. Both of the books that I have mentioned above have similar information i.e. `lesser banishing rituals' and tarot card descriptions associated with personal meanings. If you are into path working and mixing it up with astrology, numerology, tarot and Cabbala etc you may like this. Personally, a good portion of these books come across as being a little wishy washy, new age self help for my liking. The author being a psychotherapist and counsellor probably has something to do with this. There is however a little more depth, probably due to the influence of Israel Regardie and the many years Hyatt has been involved with the occult.

The author states that Sex Magic and Tantra are "Not the same". "Tantra itself is a vast subject, of which sex-magic practices constitute only a small part...Sex Magic however, (requires) no more than a purposeful intent, skill in the techniques of magic, and a relaxed attitude to any possible experience or effect." The author states that this can be accomplished by a single person and couples of same or different sexes. Note also that orgasm is encouraged with the practices given. In `Secrets of Western Tantra' Appendix, via another writer Phil Hine (see also Hine's book `Permutations'- Sub heading - `Sodomy as spiritual fulfilment' pg 25), Hyatt gives techniques for "Cacodemonic Copulations" i.e. sex with Succubi and Incubi; also Evocations for calling an entity for the purpose of having sex with this demon lover. Hyatt states that there are dangers for those not equipped to handle this and gives techniques for getting out of this once all hell breaks loose. I know that the author would hate what I'm about to say, but let's face it, this is black Tantra. I can see that by performing the rituals one would get more in touch with their spiritual selves, yet I profoundly doubt that performing these exercises would lead one to enlightenment. Do what thou wilt with this my review, but remember Anubis is not deceived and shows now partiality.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful Magick.......2005-08-05

While the beginning of the book is mostly the authors explaining themselves and it goes into simple tarot card stuff the ending of the book is supreme with very powerful sex magick involving a partner. I also really liked the illustrations of the cards using Duquette's ceremonial magick deck. Overall, not a bad addition to your book collection if you are into Thelema and other schools of magick. Duquette and Hyatt are both respected authorities on the subject. This involves the all important supreme ritual of invocation one's personal daemon or holy guardian angel (HGA) and for bringing the subject into more tangible terms involving a ritual the book is to be admired.

SEX MAGICK, TANTRA, & TAROT
BY Christopher S. Hyatt and Lon Milo DuQuette.

First of all this book is simple to understand and the directions are quite clear. This is a book that can change you for the better if you work it. Its a way of using the tarot in a special reading "not an ordinary divination" to know of yourself on a more deeper level. It will prepare you for Kundalini and the knowledge and conversation of you Holy Gaurdian Angel. Even if you like I have had in the past and still have the knowledge and conversation this book can help you on a more deeper level. It uses the systems of Tantra, Sex Magick and Ceremonial Magick to achieve this. It also has a chapter on how the Tarot and the Tree of Life and Qabalah are all put together. This book is great for those who wish to have this High Magickal experience, it should not be passed by. The book is 191 pages but dont let that fool you as there is a wealth of information here. Too me its one of those treasures I considder priceless and I will hold on to for good! ! ! I am very pleased at what has been put into this book. Even though I had the knoledge and conversation with my HGA many years ao I found these techniques to be helpful in streanthning my relationship with my Angel. I still like using this book as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars Sex and Magic using your Tarot.......1999-12-03

Hyatt and Duquette team together for a ritual using sex as the meditation in gaining insight, enlightenment, samadhi - whatever it may be. Also using your Tarot cards coupled with astrology to determine the time and place of the ritual (conversation) of the Holy Guardian Angel. Spelled out by Hyatt and Duquette, both learners of Israel Regardie, in an explanatory manner how to achieve invocation through sex with a partner or yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Modern Day Magician.......2005-11-12

I had wanted to get this deck since I saw it in a Barnes & Noble last year. Duquette was getting a bigger following but was still cult. The deck itself is worth getting for its simplicty; as I've seen with pretty much all of Duquette's stuff he waters it down and puts in a such a plain language that anyone who gets the general idea of the thing can do it successfully. As in his Illustrated Goetia, it is so watered down for the average Joe like myself that you can use cardboard as a magic circle and use the magick with success. In particular, the artwork was so bad that I could see every stroke that was painted; I actually could've and could make a better tarot deck than this myself in terms of the artwork alone. I like this deck because of that very reason- anyone with any decency could work Duquette's magick, and that is also his downfall.

5 out of 5 stars Symbolic presentation of Western Occult Magick!.......2005-03-01

This deck is a wonderful presentation of all the principles of western Magick. This deck works in such sublime matters both in divination and teaching the student the Enochian,Goetia, and Qabalah systems. This deck is truly a symbolic book of occult Magick.Lon has done a great service in creating this deck.Love is the Law,Love under Will.

4 out of 5 stars Great Tarot Deck.......2004-01-18

I've had this deck a little over a month now and I must say that I am very pleased with it. Duquette has done a fine job of putting together a great deal of information in a small space. One of the best decks produced in the past few years.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Tarot Deck - will give Thoth Tarot Competition.......2003-01-08

This is a fascinating deck. The accuracy of readings is astounding, and the deck will continuously give the same card(s), consistently, during a reading / clarification of a reading. I have always had amazing results with The Thoth Tarot, but Lon Duquette's Ceremonial Magick Deck is definitely the most accurate and consistent deck I have ever worked with.

I wasn't too sure about buying it, at-first, because the artwork reminded me of the Golden Dawn deck, but I viewed the details of the corresponding book ( ISBN: 0877287643 ), via the enlarge feature, and decided to give it a chance, based upon Lon Duquette's other works. Suffice to say, I am thrilled that I made the purchase!

I am really enjoying this deck, and I like the artwork. The artwork is not as detailed and "busy" as Crowley's Thoth Tarot, but it is not as Intense, either...it doesn't beat you over the head with Symbolism. I would certainly recommend Duquette's Ceremonial Deck to beginners, but I would also suggest buying a few books about The Goetia, to understand the whole concept.

The Ceremonial Magick Tarot is surprisingly colorful, bright, humorous and intriguing. Duquette's personality comes through in this deck, and his long years of Research are embedded in the cards, as well.

Normally, I need to tune-up a deck and work with it a while, to tune-in to it's vibe...but, this deck spoke to me, the moment I broke the seal.

I believe this deck will be a great asset to anyone already using Crowley's deck, but it will also be a great Beginner's Deck. Of all my Tarot Cards, this Deck is in my "Top 3" favorites (the ones I use the most)--and has shifted to a position above "The Masonic Tarot."

5 out of 5 stars REAL MAGICK IN A BOX.......2002-12-24

This is not another novelty Tarot deck. In fact, it recaptures the true magical tradition of the Tarot as few decks have ever done. I have to admit that it isn't as pretty as the Crowley/Harris Thoth Deck or the Cicero's Golden Dawn Ritual Tarot, but it has something more than either of these classics ... in your face Magick!

The four Elemental Tablets of the Enochian system of John Dee adorn the Aces - with the Aces and Court Cards you can construct the powerful Enochian Tablet of Union. The Small Cards bear the names and sigils of all 72 Spirits of the Goetia, and the names of the 72 Qabalistic Angels of the Shemhamaphorash, and the degrees of the zodiac and days of the year sacred to these spirits. Want to project your astral body in to the elemental worlds? The Aces and Court Cards display colored tattwa symbols used for that very purpose. DuQuette didn't just through this stuff on some cards and call it Tarot. All these magical correspondences, even the colors, are organized with anal retentive perfection in strict conformity to the most revered magical and qabalistic traditions concerning the Tarot.

The accompanying book is filled with all the technical information necessary to actually begin practicing Qabalistic, Enochian, and Goetic magick. The first question I had to ask myself after reading it was..."Am I ready for this?"

Product Description

In 1992, Pastor Lon Solomon's career was on a speedy ascent. He was the senior pastor at McLean Bible Church, an influential and rapidly growing church in the suburbs of the nation's capital. In his weekly sermons he was funny, engaging, and self-effacing. He was successful, comfortable, respected by his peers and reaching Washington's elite decision makers. His life could not have been better. That's precisely when his world began to crumble. He didn't see it at the time, but today Pastor Solomon knows that God was sending the blessing of brokenness to him. It came in the form of a beautiful daughter who for years would suffer through thousands of seizures and become severely impaired, physically and mentally. He and his family were thrust into days of emotional darkness. Pastor Solomon began to question his faith and feared he would fail his congregation. In this touching and important book, he tells how God shattered him for the sole purpose of helping him reach his full potential as a servant of Christ. Today, his church is having a major impact on Washington, D.C., with more than 10,000 worshipers attending services each weekend. Read this book and you'll never be the same.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Poignant, Relevant Book from Lon Solomon.......2007-04-18

Lon Solomon's ministry has grown tremendously in recent years, and for good reason. His teachings are without a doubt Biblical, honest, and down to earth. I have attended his church, McLean Bible Church in Vienna, Virginia, many a time and have always been highly impressed with his unwavering presentation of the true Gospel message.

Lon's book, "Brokenness: How God Redeems Pain and Suffering," is no different. We all go through hard times in life, whether emotionally, physically, or psychologically. Sometimes it can press in and become almost unbearable. But it's good to know there's a resource out there to help us understand WHY God sometimes allows these tragedies in our lives and His purpose behind that suffering - and Lon's book is just that. Lon knows what he's talking about - he's been there.

If you want to understand why God is taking so long in His answer, why it has to be so painful and difficult in the process, and why He allowed it in the first place, then you need this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-11

Excellent book from someone who has experienced brokenness firsthand. It is a book that I have purchased for several of my friends. I have read the book twice and intend to reread it about once a year.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book I've Read on Pain and Suffering in a Long Time.......2006-12-13

I'm a psychologist, an abuse survivor, a person who's lost several close friends and family to death, and, lately, a person with severe, debilitating, unexpected pain in both of my knees. In attempts to be a better therapist and also to help me understand the reason for all of the pain in my own life, I've read numerous books on suffering and pain. I wish this book had been available decades ago, when I had my first "broken" experience. At the time, I was asking God to use me and fill me and then, inexplicably, numerous horrible things happened in my life. I didn't understand them and thought that God didn't love me anymore! Many years later, I realized that God had always loved me and never had left, but I wasted a lot of time and went through unnecessary heartache.

In this book, Lon explains how many people who are earnestly seeking after a more close, intimate relationship with God, are confused and stunned when it looks as if He's punishing or abandoning them. He uses the analogy of a seed of wheat -- the outer, hard shell must crack in order for the life to flow out and produce fruit. He discusses how God will break us, often in the area that is our central core, in order to have His life flow through us and produce fruit.

I highly recommend this book to anyone you know who is struggling -- whether it's because their spouse has just walked out on them, they're experiencing physical pain of some kind, have a child either born with or developing physical or emotional problems, go through a death of someone close, or any other situation that causes immense suffering. It's encouraging in a real, solid way -- not at all filled with platitudes, but, instead, filled with solid, Scriptural foundations for his conclusions.

5 out of 5 stars For My Mom.......2006-11-05

My mother has been quadrapelegic for about 20 years. She has faith that someday God will heal her... even if she has to wait for that in Heaven. She heard something about this book and asked me to get it for her. It took a while, but finally found it on Amazon.com. She said when she starting reading it, she profoundly disagreed with much of it and proceeded to give it a rather disgusted throw across the room. Well, she said something kept pulling her back to it. She read it and only then started to understand what the author intended to say. Since then she has been encouraging everyone she knows to read it. Many of us are 'broken' if not physicially, then spiritually or emotionally. Its up to us to find our brokenness and begin to heal.

5 out of 5 stars Brokenness: How God Redeems Pain and Suffering.......2006-08-30

This book was awesome, it ministered to my heart in a way no other book I've read has touched my life. I've already bought 10 additional copies to pass out to family and friends. I could relate to the stories about his daughters special needs, as I too have a son that had a near drowning accident and suffered brain damage and has a lot of special needs.

I received it just before my son came down with pneumonia and went into the PICU on a ventilator. Reading it during this tough time in my life was just what I needed to keep my focus on God's faithfulness, knowing that He is always in control of all the circumstances of our lives.
