Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars O Rei Pele!.......2006-07-29

I read this book as a kid in Nigeria...Pele's legend cannot be imitated or duplicated...his feats are simply majestic...very humble, classy superstar who never let the accolades get to him..97 goals for Brazil and 1283 club goals is ridiculous! People dont even score 300 goals anymore..You would think that by playing 1300 games, he'd break down at some point...the book was a great read...get his new one "PELE" (autobio)!

4 out of 5 stars The Best Player Ever........2006-07-21

This is an exceptionally detailed biography. The statistical chart at the back of all the games he played in was a very pleasant surprise. The only things missing was some tactical diagrams and a map of Brazil. Every chapter added colorful insight into his life-Ch's-2,6,8-facts of life, 9-Pele in love and 17. He also gave the reader the fine nuances of the "beautiful game." Chapters-1,3-5,10,12,14-1,000 goal,15-16,18,19-20-Cosmos years. I found chapters 7-race relations in Brazil,11-the trainor, and 13-Santos years to be the most interesting. Lastly, I could not agree more with Pele's distaste for defensive Football on 310-11.

4 out of 5 stars A well-written autobiography.......2006-02-19

It's fortunate for the soccer-fan readers that the author focuses his writing on what happens on soccer field. I don't really care that much about his company, although it helps to understand the author's personalities as a whole.

It would be even better if the author describe how he thought of scoring those famous goals (even just say subcouciously I scored).
Some diagrams would help too.

5 out of 5 stars A Good book about The Greatest of The Beautiful Game.......2004-10-05

I was too young to see Pele while he still was an active footballer, but growing up in a football loving home I've been fed with the legend of this fantastic athlete. My Dad always told me about the greatness of Pele, and I always felt that I lost our "arguments" about whether "my generations" superstar Maradona or "his generations" star Pele actually was the Greatest One.

I bought this book to find out more about the legendary Pele. Wow, wasn't this a great book? When understanding what impact this man had on the beautiful game it's easy to see how he can be recognized as the Greatest. He wasn't only an extremely talented athlete; he was also a man with a wonderful heart and who had his morals in order. I'm sure you find a picture of Pele in the dictionary if you look up the word "sportsmanship".

I think this well written book is a worthy tribute to this great athlete. It tells us the this to-good-to-be-true motivational story about a man with an extreme talent that goes all the way from poverty thru a triumphant career all the way to the top of the beautiful game...and he do so with style!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Edson Arantes do Nascimento: Pele' and his beautiful game.......2004-03-06

Few athletes have captured the world's collective admiration and respect as Edson Arantes do Nascimento. Known affectionately to his family as Dico, but to the rest of us as Pele', his influence far exceeded his tremendous exploits on the soccer field. He is one of the most recognized people in the world.

This well-written, extremely detailed, and intriguing autobiography takes us deeply into Pele's world. He describes in great detail his impoverished youth in Bauru, his rapid ascent into the Brazilian National Team, his stellar years at Santos Football Club, and finally, his desire to bring soccer to the skeptical masses in North America. But throughout it all, we see his humility. "I only wanted to be as good as my father, Dodinho."

I had the opportunity to play soccer with a Brazilian who played with Pele' at Santos. My friend was very young at the time, and told me that Pele' treated him very well. "He was well-liked by everyone, and always helpful to his teammates. You never knew he was the best player in the world. He acted just like a regular guy."

Out of his many feats (playing in the World Cup final at the age of 17, the only three time winner of the World Cup, scoring almost 1300 goals), one stands out. Pele' is perhaps the only athlete to ever stop a war. During the Biafran Civil War in Nigeria, a three day truce was called to watch him play two exhibition games.

Pele' was declared a national treasure by his native Brazil. But for the millions of us who had the privilege to see him play, he was our treasure as well.

Thank you for the opportunity to review this excellent book.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars My review of this book.......2004-05-21

Okay...Everybody these dayz be talkin' how the Washington Manual series is tha bobm. (I mean this book was already ranked at 910,000 on Amazon within like only 2 weeks of release) Well, sorry to alert you of this, but they ain't tha bobm. It's just that people were so gaga about there last one: The Washington Manual Gastroenterology Subspecialty Consult. I mean my sister just threw a "Gastroenterology Subspecialty Consult"-themed party last week and all her friends went basically BUHLISTIC over it.

Now, the Washington Manual stuff is aight, but it's no Health Institute-level stuff and it certainly is nothing when put in the ring together with the Terrence Bros. Series which, if nothing else, are mad powerful consults and the ones I would use most often in my practice.

And, can someone answer me this, why are hematology and oncology talked about in the SAME BOOK??? Oncology's cool, but, sorry again, fols, hematology is basically going the way of alchemy. That's right. I said it. Hematology is a useless science and only could MAYBE come in handy if anyone ever had a disorder of the blood or associated organs.

Also, it seemed like this book was totally not saying near enough about dosing chemo (I mean, not that any med student or resident would dose chemo, obviously), but, still, yo, these protocolz are constantly changing anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Nice overview.......2003-12-02

Just got this book- I thought it was a very nice overview of hematology and oncology. It was one of the few that I could find that had "just enough" detail without going overboard with minutiae. A great book for a student or resident on service.

5 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2003-11-05

This is a subspecialty consult book on hem/onc that I just received. It seems to have all of the basics for the primary physician, med student, rotating resident and even the basics for the fellows. You never know it might even have some of the minutiae that some attendings might forget. I think it was created for the rotating resident or med student and for this it really serves its purpose. Easy and concise. Although I have not read it completely, it does seem a tad sparse in some sections such as dosing chemo (not that the med student/resident would dose chemo), but these protocols are constantly changing anyway...but an idea of dose range might have been a bit helpful some readers. Overall it is an excellent review of hem/onc.

Book Description

The wisdom and spirituality of Hawaiian elders is a facet of Hawaiian culture that outsiders rarely see or truly understand. New Age veteran Sondra Ray and her personal guide, Auntie Pua, act as messengers of the Aloha spirit, sharing the sacred teachings of the Kahunas — the “transmitters of secrets” — through kitchen-table style storytelling and first-hand adventures. The ancient rituals and basic tenets of the Huna way — loving oneself, nurturing other beings and the land, and living in harmony with all of life — provide a powerful code of transformation, leading to a deeper spiritual life more in tune with the rhythms of the natural world. By identifying the three core selves present in everyone, and in coordinating the way the three selves interact, readers learn to control their own reality — this is the Huna Way.

3 out of 5 stars Pele's Wish.......2007-02-02

Being a Pele devotee and a student of Hawaiian religion and philosophy, I couldn't wait to read this book and was sadly, very disappointed. I felt this was more of an examination of Ray's life; an edited version of what she experienced. I did not feel at all like she shared her lessons or taught me anything about Pele's Wish. The book felt rushed and incomplete to me. Her mission statement remained frustratingly remote and opaque. There are better, more useful books on the subject of Hawaiian religion and healing such as Connie Rios' "Ka Hana Pono" book and cards which are actual tools to connect you with Spirit. Still, I am glad Madame Pele is finding new audiences (hopefully). Aloha oe.

5 out of 5 stars The wisdom and spirituality of the Hawaiian ancients.......2005-06-13

Pele's Wish: Secrets Of The Hawaiian Masters And Eternal Life by rebirthing movement pioneer Sondra Ray will instruct the reader into the mysteries and mastery of the "Aloha Spirit", the unique principles of Huna philosophy, the ancient Hawaiian counseling and prayer technique called "ho-oponopono", as well as Kahuna magic. Sondra Ray (with the assistance of her personal guide, Maui-based kahuna Puanani Mahoe) acts as a messenger of the Aloha spirit to reveal as an aspect of Hawaiian metaphysics rarely observed or understood by outsiders. With its revelations of the wisdom and spirituality of the Hawaiian ancients, Pele's Wish is a welcome and unique contribution to Metaphysical Studies reference collections and reading lists.

Pele and the Rivers of Fire is a beautiful story of Pele, the goddess of fire. This children's book is for anyone, childern or adults, who appreciate stunning artwork, and stories about Polynesian folklore. One of my favorite parts of the book is the glossary. It teaches you how to say the Hawaiin words and my kids have since been running around the house calling each other pahoehoe (PAH hoy hoy) and Lo'ihi (LOH ee hee.) It's a great bedtime read and will undoubtedly be passed on to future generations.

Myths, legends, romances and folktales of the most fascinating goddess of old Hawaii. Pele lives in Hawaiian hearts and minds as the personification of volcanic majesty and power. Having the power to create new land, she has a volcanic personality - an impetuous, lusty nature, jealous, unpredictable, capable of sudden fury and great violence. Yet she can also be gentle, loving and as serene as her forests of verns and flowering trees.

Herb Kawainui Kona is not only a wonderful artist, but also a wonderful story teller. Whenever we have family or guest visiting we ALWAYS make sure to send EACH of them home with a copy. (if we sent them only home w/ one there would be fights trust me)
Pele:Goddess of Hawaii's Volcanoes is a book about the stories of old Hawaii nei. While reading the stories, you will also find the most BEAUTIFUL painting of what Mr Kane sees. I so believe that Mr. Kane and Pele are related, or this man has meet tutu Pele. I believe you also will agree after reading this book. Also be sure to check out other items about this most awesome gentleman. If you are ever on the Island of Hawaii (aka The Big Island) be sure to go to Volcano Park and see his work up close. Also one might want to type Herb Kawainui Kane on google, yahoo. etc. I do hope that you buy this book and enjoy it has much as we have. Aloha

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for those who love Hawaiian culture.......2006-12-11

*****
This is a lovely short book (71 pages), spectacularly illustrated by the author. Even though the classification of this book is "juvenile literature", it is a collector's item for anyone who loves Hawaiian culture.

It is illustrated with black-and-white and color drawings by the author whose value alone surpasses the price of the book. There are many stories about Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, written in an enjoyable style, exploring both past and current legends and folklore. The author, Herb Kawainui Kane, was elected a Living Treasure of Hawai'i, and does an excellent job with this book.

5 out of 5 stars pele come to life.......2006-06-30

a beautiful book, the paintings are breathtaking. this is not an artists rendering of Pele. mr kane obviously knows her well, he has captured the spirit and fire that is Pele. a must ahve for anyone wishing to know this goddess.

4 out of 5 stars Pele revealed.......2004-02-10

A fascinating history of the goddess Pele in legend and history, telling her story from ancient Hawaii to the present. Particularly interesting is the author's description of people returning rocks taken from Hawaii in the belief that they have been cursed. It seems Pele's presence is still very much felt in Hawaii. The book is full of absolutely gorgeous illustrations, it would be worth buying for those alone, but the text is absorbing too. If you want to know about Pele, this book will tell you everything about her.

5 out of 5 stars Pele still Lives!.......2003-01-03

The Goddess Pele never died, She is stil; alive in Hawaii. This book although written by a non pagan brings Pele to life with his words. His art gives her beauty and power. Many who think her curse is a joke take rocks from her island and then live the curse of Pele if they survive they bring them back to Her island. This book reveals the history of Hawaii and tells how Pele was not a native Hawaiin. It also shows the degeneration of her worship through the conversion to the new religion Christianity. The illustrations are so very beautyful and do remind me so much of the beautyful firey Goddess Pele. Her worship is alive and well.

5 out of 5 stars The Volcano Goddess Will See You Now.......2001-10-26

Great, funny book. My grandson 7 years old was traveling with us to Hawaii, this book was perfect. It was all about the misadventures of a little boy traveling with his Dad on his first trip to Hawaii. Not only was my grandson laughing and laughing but so was I. He couldn't wait to finish the book as we read it waiting in the airport and then on a interisland flight.
My Grandson made sure when he left Hawaii that he didn't have any
lava rock with him after reading the book. He wants more of the Zack file adventures.

This was the first zach files book I read to my then-6 year old. When we got to the part with the Goddess we were both laughing so hard that the rest of the family thought we went nuts. Since then we have read a bunch of other Zach books. They are all great. The most amazing thing is the Greenburg can introduce concepts (in this book ecofriendly tourism?), parallel universes and reincarnation so naturally that kids can really understand as if they've always known. I think Zach files jump started my son's love of reading.

4 out of 5 stars Ryan's Review.......2006-10-18

I thought Rage of Fire was good but it was not as the other book in the series because it wasn't as the thrilling and suspenseful.

Jack and Ashley and their parents are going to Hawaii for vacation. A day later they get a call that they have to pick up a boy named Danny Tran and bring him back to Wyoming with them to live with his grandfather because he can't live with his great grand parents any more.
Then they go to Volcano National Park and Danny takes them on a trail while their father goes and takes pictures. They find themselves being chased by a lady in a red dress. Ashley and Danny thinks its Pele the fire goddess but Jack thinks that is crazy or could it be?

I recommend this book to a 8-13 year old or a person who likes mystery books.

3 out of 5 stars Not for Piano Pros! Intermediates and Amateurs read on.......2003-01-04

Hmmmmm, tricksy this one. Tori Amos makes me sick. I took piano lessons for like three years and quit because I hated it. But, when you're ten years old and your fat, evil piano teacher slams your finger onto a key yelling "C!C!C!C!C!" when you accidentally played a D, it kind of has a way of ruining the magic of the moment. (She also made luscious smelling cookies all the time, and we had to sit there in our after school hunger and watch as she consumed them one by one) Anyway, Tori "I was playing better piano than you when I was two" Amos was the reason I decided to forget the tyrant Mrs. Evers and take up piano again. I struggle with some things in this book, but I retained enough piano knowledge to get through the majority of her songs. Horses is fun to play, so is the Doughnut Song. Marianne is pretty close to the CD (for all simplified purposes), nothing you can't listen to the song and add to. I have been disappointed with Not the Red Baron, though, because it just doesn't sound right. This book is also generally kind of hard. That could be because I'm not a great piano player and just can't get the flow rght. I would actually suggest getting the Anthology, as it is more simplified and has more variety. The simplification of the transcription in such books can be good and bad, but nothing you can't add to. I think it is better to have it easier to begin with, instead of so complex that it is intimidating. Come on, Tori's music is intimidating enough! For that reason I would suggest the Anthology over this book, at least to start with. Besides, there is so much more to play in it. If you get stuck or discouraged, there are many other songs to play that will boost your confidence, as opposed to this book which is all music from one CD, and one of the stranger Tori CDs at that. I give this book 3.5 stars, and suggest the Anthology. However, if you're just really into Pele and want to play some of the songs, go for it. If all you can do is read and play notes, you can do it. Be confident. Practice one song (Horses!) until you're lost in playing it. Then move on to another (Father Lucifer!). If you can't figure out how it is supposed to sound, put the cd on and listen to that part. Improv if you must! Just don't quit! Before long you'll be throwing your own private piano concert, lost for hours in ethereal Toryland. It's nice to visit her world for a while.

5 out of 5 stars only the best, plays the best.......2001-09-13

Tori Amos is a magnificent piano goddess. I try to play like her all of the time, but I feel like Iam her when I play my piano.
Since I never had the chance to see her in concert I always g online to watch her there. She is amazing. Several years ago at one of my 8th grade talent shows my friend performed "Hey Jupiter" by her. Oh my god she sound just like her. She had excellent props for her performance.
Thats why Iam such a big fan of her music, all for knowing, she plays piano and sings acapella.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful CD from a beautiful artist.......2001-01-08

All of her music is touching, and this especially so. She is talented both with the composition and the performance, and this is a spendid showpice of her gifts.

4 out of 5 stars BoYs FoR pElE.......1999-12-27

definately, if you liked the cd, you were constantly thinking" i wish i could play like that." Definately a good source to learn how to play the music that drives you.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful for moderate piano players.......1999-11-28

i can't tell you how much this has helped my piano skills. or at the very least, my confidence! i was completely amazed when i first bought the book that i was able to play virtually every song in the book without real difficulty.the arrangements seem very true on the piano songs, but on all songs done with harpsichord, half of the notes are missing. i like the fact that the piano part doesn't include the melody line.
