Give this to the people in your life who would not normally sit down and read a book.

5 out of 5 stars True to the original, and yet radically fresh.......2007-02-16

Readers familiar and unfamiliar with the Gospel according to Mark will both find much to appreciate in Steve Ross's retelling. He really internalized the story and then retold it from his perspective. This version will surprise many readers who have no interest in the Gospel, or who think they understand it and have dismissed it. It will also be of great use to people who love the Gospel, but need to re-learn some parts of it. Either way, I suggest reading Marked on its own, and then read through it again alongside a more widely used translation (like the New International Version of the Gospel of Mark, to see the parallels. This is a remarkable work. I hope to see more retellings of Scripture in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Only for Those With Prior Knowledge.......2006-02-16

As someone who is not Christian and only knows the basics of the New Testement (and doesn't know the difference between any of the gospels), I came into Marked with a lot of expectations. Having read about it in Newsweek, I expected the story of an outsider and to learn about a religion I don't know about. The book is without a doubt meant for Christians. No background is given on the characters, we're supposed to know that Jesus is who he is, that Simon is Simon, and the land is corrupt. I was left confused and slightly frustrated at several moments. Also, a lot of the drama just wasn't there for me. Since this is an adaptation, I guess the reader is supposed to be waiting for certain moments. It just didn't work for me.
That being said, there were some moments I enjoyed. The devil is great, and the pages that lead up to the crucifixition are better than The Passion any day of the week.
Recommended for the Christian graphic novel fan.

3 out of 5 stars Marked.......2006-01-19

As an author who has tackled Gospel translation into the graphic novel format, I commend Steve Ross on a heart-felt effort to bring the book of Mark to life with a contempory feel. It's not an easy task by any means. But Marked is slightly problematic in a couple areas. One, if it was designed to be used as an outreach to the unchurched, I felt like the narrative was not very easy to follow, (if you were not "very" familiar with the work it was based upon, I.E. the Gospel of Mark, and in some places even if you were)! It was the same kind of feeling I had when I first saw the movie, 2001. Secondly, the artwork I would say drifts more toward abstraction in many parts of the story, more than solid storytelling...which is fine and works wonderfully in soome parts of the book, but leaves the reader wondering too much in others, (what the heck just happened there?).

If Mr. Ross's intention was to merely convey how this story personally speaks to him, then he succeeded wonderfully. If he intended to bring those not familiar with the story along for the ride, I'm afraid he might have left more than a few scratching their heads, (which could be good, if it leads them to the original work to find their answers).

Robert Luedke is the author of "Eye Witness: A Fictional Tale of Absolute Truth" and "Acts of the Spirit".

5 out of 5 stars A FRESH VISION OF THE GOSPEL OF MARK: RECOMMENDED.......2005-12-18

With my newly revived interest in old and new, well-done comic books-slash-graphic novels (think ASTONISHING X-MEN, think SANDMAN, think WATCHMEN, think SUPREME POWERS), I had to rush here to amazon.com for a copy of MARKED. I first saw it featured at novelist Chris Well's nifty blog. This re-imagination of the gospel of Mark sounded like something I should "taste and see."

It arrived on a Friday. I read it the next Saturday, in one sitting. Loved it.

Why?

MARKED is clever. It's got attitude. It's got gentle moments of compassion. It's got strong visuals that mix a bag of emotions together and toss them at you. It's got humor. It captures the essence of what the evangelist wrote: a very active Son of God, a very troubled world, imperfect followers, even more imperfect antagonists, wisdom, courage, mercy, grace, death, and victory over death.

I recommend it.

I dare you not to laugh at mad-eyed John the Baptizer and the running headlines that cover the main events of that prophet's activities--even as you'll be horrified (rightly so) by the front page spread of his demise and its timeliness given some of our recent front page news. I dare you not to be thrilled at some really fine creative moments, such as the Gadarene's encounter with the Christ or the incident of transfiguration on the mount. I dare you not to feel ferklempt over the incident of Christ's meeting with the leper. I dare you not to holler, "Cool!" every few pages. And do tell me if you've seen the resurrection handled anywhere quite like this, ever. I haven't. I had to actually stop and ...STOP. No, really, I had one of those blank moments of, "What?" And I had to think. I like when creative folk make me stop and think. I like when creative folk stir things up. Steve Ross achieves this with MARKED.

The Mir's thumb is way up.

Side Note: You can also play, "Find the famous person" with this. Can you find a great black leader? Can you find the is-he-dead-or-isn't-he rocker? Anyone else?

Shameless Gift Suggestion: Christmas is upon us. If you have a comic book lover in your family, of if you know a reader who needs to be slapped with a zingy graphical gospel that will whet their appetite for a visit to the original, or if you just love someone and want to thrill them, get this as a gift for that person.

Book Description

It's not that
Casey Little is
always late.

It's just that everything
starts a little
too early.

But when Casey discovers a weird little time machine, he figures he'll never be late again. Unfortunately, it's not a very good time machine. It can only go back 15 minutes. And it seems to have a mind of its own.

Still -- what could possibly go wrong?

5 out of 5 stars One of the best YA books I've ever read.......2006-09-11

I found 15 Minutes to be an absolutely wonderful book. I read it aloud to my 4th grader and 2nd grader, and they both loved it. The book is exciting AND funny AND thoughtful and just a wonderful read. My reaction is the same as the two other reviews: This book is wonderful for both kids and adults. I can't wait for a movie version of this GROUNDHOG DAY for kids story.

I said I read this to my 2nd and 4th grade children. Here's what the 2nd grader has to say:

This book is the best book I've ever read in my entire life. I'd really like to buy it and I'd like it if you could possibly make it into a movie. Time travel, I think, is absolutely wonderful and mysterious. --N.

5 out of 5 stars Watch This Rising Star! .......2006-08-20

Wisecracking Casey Little is never on time. In fact, "on time" for him is a little late for everyone else. His lack of punctuality causes no end of grief, and no end of visits to the principal's office.

Things change when he finds a watch built by his grandfather. He's amazed to learn it's a time machine. One problem. It only goes back fifteen minutes. But that's still pretty cool, right?

Casey is faced with tough choices throughout this story. He must weigh the values of friendship, popularity, honesty, and hard work.

Young weaves a fun, funny, and punny tale with enough lessons to satisfy parents. This book is easy to read, although there are references that may go over some kids' heads. For example, there's a scene where Casey talks about escargot without knowing what it is. This scene appeals more to adults/older kids who will get the joke.

This book would be a great classroom pick. I found no fewer than four possible discussion points and/or possible activities. Books like this are what make learning fun, especially for reluctant readers.

Definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars "15 Minutes" is Time Well-spent.......2006-08-05

Do-overs are rarely afforded to any of us, and it's intriguing to think about going back in time to correct our mistakes. Like most teens, Casey Little is plagued with daily do-over want-to-dos. Unlike any of us, he gets the chance after stumbling across his grandfather's invention: The Go-Back Machine, which straps to the wrist and whisks the wearer back in time, but only for the past fifteen minutes. There's one minor glitch; sometimes the Go-Back has a mind of its own.

Captivating from the first view of the vividly-colored cartoonish front cover, "15 Minutes" is a fast-paced romp through Casey's re-do trips back in time, and sparkles with jokes and Casey's self-inflicted humor to carry him through his perceived "humiliating" adolescent faux pas and dealing with the class bully.

Adding to the interest are interactive pages that allow the reader to write his own thoughts. Succinct history lessons and word definitions peak the curiosity and are mingled with moral lessons -- some subtle, some with the kick of a rodeo bull -- all of which combine to make "15 Minutes" a great read for the young man or girl who is looking for something stimulating to wile away summer hours.

Definitely time well-spent, even for a grow'd up.

Movie stars, rock stars, pond nymphs, intergalactic superheroes . . . who are the real goddesses in Francesca Lia Block's world? Real young women--the kind who ache, bleed, dance, and talk to blue ghosts in closets. Famous for her lyric Weetzie Bat books, Block blossoms in this collection of short stories about love: straight, gay, familial, and otherworldly. Very few young adult authors talk as frankly as Block about sex and some of the other yearnings we feel in this world, yet she guides her readers toward the self-respect and courage necessary to make smart choices about those yearnings.

Book Description

Meet Tweetie Sweet Pea and Peachy Pie, Jacaranda and Rave and Desiree...

Meet Lady Ivory and Alabaster Dutchess, who interview their favorite rock star, Nick Agate, only to discover the magic and power in themselves. Meet Tuck Budd, who is happy living in Manhattan with her two moms, Izzy and Anastasia, until she begins to wonder who her father is. Meet La, who faces the loss of her mother with an imaginary androgynous blue friend who lives in her closet. Zingingly bright and dreamily dark, full of wonder and gritty reality, these stories by acclaimed author Francesca Lia Block show the reader that in every girl there truly is a goddess.

The cutting-edge author of Weetzie Bat once again breaks new ground with Girl Goddess #9, nine stories about girl goddesses of every age and shape and color and size, wearing combat boots and spiky hair or dressed all in white. One girl has two moms, another has no mother at all but a strange blue skinned creature that lives in her closet. One is a rock star groupie, another loves dancing and reading poetry and having picnics in the backyard when the moon is full. These are stories about girls discovering that the world is not a simple place and that there is more than one way to live'all in Ms. Block's rich, lyrical language that fans have come to adore and that Sassy magazine called `a dream.'

2 out of 5 stars Well...At least it pleases people.......2007-04-23

I read this book as soon as I got it and immediately felt like I'd frozen. I've been reading her books sinc I was like 12, and this was the first time I'd ever felt dissapointed.
I mean firstly I couldn't get into the story "Girl Goddess #9" because it was just plain boring. I know that this was one of her first forays into writing because of how stilted it is. How bland the writing was.
"Winnie and Cubby" Word for word of another story she recreated in an anthology that mad me like her. "Winnie and Tommy" Wow. Just wow. I liked it, but you could tell that she was reeeallly aiming for the YA audience in this book. Seemed like a YA wrote it themselves. :(
I mean I'm not a big fan of the book, but it is cute. Her euphamisms are great, the writin is solid beyond being quite cheezy...but hey lots of people like it.
I just read it in an hour and said to myself "Wow how corny." and I think the story I liked least was "Dragons in Manhattan." The story premise is good, the message not so great. But Block has a way of letting teenagers run away smoke drink and have sex, plus eat cake and get offered niceties by older people while they get their fairy tale ending. If you like that, read this book. If you want something a little more real I'd suggest:

Kiki's delivery Service. Or any oldschool "Kid's book" the writing may surprise you.

5 out of 5 stars another great one by francesca lia block.......2005-08-11

Francesca Lia Block never ceases to amaze me and with this book she proves just how awesome of a writer she is. With her poetic style and writing of topics that a lot of people deal with every day from homosexuality and the loss of a parent to drug use and schizophrenia and being without friends (almost all 9 stories center around the lead girl character with the exception of a few) With this book F. L. Block proves that in every girl lives a goddess and we should embrace that and be proud that we are a goddess and no one can take that away from us.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book.......2005-04-16

Girl Goddess #9 is an amazing book.

It captures many different modern teenage girl voices.

Yeah Francesca!

3 out of 5 stars cute.......2004-10-18

I really enjoyed the first story in this book. About Sweet Pea and Peachy Pie. Cute. The other stories are okay but the first and 'Rave' are worth a read. Sometimes I read the stories and wished for more, but most of the time I wished that FLB wrote with better grammer skills. She loves to start a sentence with And. It gets annoying. If you want to read a better book from FLB try Violet and Claire or Echo.

5 out of 5 stars Every Girl's Diary.......2003-01-13

I look back now, and I realize that Girl Goddess #9 was a big part of my formative years. It was the first FLB book, and it still one of my favorites.

When I read the title story, I remember thinking, "Well,I like Sarah McLachlan, maybe I should give Tori Amos a try." (If you don't know how that story ended, well, know that I think nothing of driving ten hours to go to a Tori concert.) And, a year or so later, I re-read the story and thought, "Hey, I like Sarah and Tori, maybe I should try the Cocteau Twins." Thus began another addiction which annually saps me about fifty bucks.

I was going through major issues with a very dear friend as I read "Pixie and Pony," and for years now, those words have stayed with me: "Best friends? We are sisters." After my mother's injury, I struggled to reconcile the reality of her new self with the way she had once been. The story "La" was of enormous help.

GG#9 is every girl's diary. It is all of our fears and hopes and drems. It is everything we've questioned about life, our futures, our parents, our sexuality, and love. Each girl is perfectly unique, very mysterious, and yet completely familiar. Each of these girls is like a little facet of each other, and of ourselves.

1 out of 5 stars Not for young readers.......2004-08-08

My son and I recently met the author at a book signing, and he recommended this book to my son as being for his age group (10 years old). He assured me that there was no blood/gore in the book, and as he is a former minister, I bought the book. My son was upset to see that the characters often said "hell" and "damn" (two words he knows he is not allowed to use) as well as taking the Lord's name in vain, and stories set in bars. My son was uncomfortable reading the book, and refused to finish it. I am disappointed that the author felt he had to resort to this type of language in a children's book, and I will not be buying anything else by him. I guess a book written by a minister is still not a guarantee that the book is appropriate for children. Too bad.

Even Odder was also a ForeWord Magazine finalist for Best Juvenile/Young Adult Fiction Book of 2004. Profanity is limited to the occasional "damn" and "hell" as utterances of surprise, which makes it a collection of stories that adults, young adults (12-18) and most middle readers (9-12)can enjoy. Its predecessor, Odd Lot, won 9 awards, and its sequel, Oddest Yet, is up for the Bram Stoker for Young Readers in June 2005.

5 out of 5 stars Nine tale collection of chilling suspense .......2005-07-05

This nine tale collection of chilling suspense that edges towards the realm of horror and fantasy genres targets the middle school aged child. The contributions are fabulous and adults will enjoy the entries too. Each tale is unique whether it pays homage to Stephen King ("Storming Stephen King") or Devaney and Hoag struggling with a paranormal mystery ("The French Acre" actually a longer short than the other contributions). The illustrations found in five of the stories add to the eerie feeling that something bad is about to happen usually to youngsters. Yet the key to ODDEST YET EVEN MORE STORIES TO CHILL THE HEART like its award winning predecessors is that the stars like the train muggers of "Uncle Bando's Chimes" using somewhat nasty language so that it seems real when a wind chime works its magic. It is that the tales entertain with realistic protagonists although the format is magically short.

    Book Description

What is the universe? How did it get that way? Here are thought-provoking answers from throughout history and around the world.

"In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth." -King James Bible

"In the beginning, before men, before the Gods, all was chaos." -Greek myth

Folklorist Steve Zeitlin gives answers to the questions everyone asks about the nature of the universe: What is it? Where did it come from? Will it end? A picture of the universe is a cosmology, and every culture has its own. People build these stories from the world around them. The ancient Egyptians who saw the Nile flood yearly told stories of gods who rise, die, and are reborn. The Maori living on the wind and sea-battered island of New Zealand tell of sea, land, and sky gods in eternal combat.

Readers will discover the Iroquois who pictured the world on a turtle's back; the Southeast Asians who described the world as a flat disc held up by three elephants; even Genesis and the Big Bang theories are included. Zeitlin retells each myth, legend, folktale or theory as a story filled with wonder and imagination.

Now every child who tries to build a picture of the universe will see how he or she fits in the grand tradition of human thought and imagination.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved it.......2002-07-10

I loved this book. I've seen so many different books on origin stories from around the world - there are dozens of them. This once is totally unique - it's about how different cultures picture the world. From the Maori, to the Egyptians, to the Desana Indians, the book explores the different visions of the universe that each culture has set forth in its myths and stories. There are even wonderful chapters on both medieval and modern science - even a chapter on Genesis. Most of the chapters are accompanied by myths and stories - all of them beautifully written. This book is perfect for a curious Middle School reader whose interest in the cosmos is just awakening - but it's great for all ages. It's one of my favorite books

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and dull in spite of much promise.......2001-06-24

Zeitlin fulfills his mission to compare the creation myths from many times and peoples, but he doesn't do it in an exciting or engaging manner. While each story builds on the next, the retellings themselves are a bit bland, and could have used a more drama. In spite of an impressive list of acknowledgements and sources (including Joseph Bruhac and E.C. Krupp, Edith Hamilton and Carl Sagan, and a nod to Joseph Campbell), Zeitlin is no storyteller.
The wide range of stories is impressive. Here the reader finds Genesis and the Talmud, theories of the first scientists and present day ones, and tales from India, Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
Chapter layout is consistent. Each chapter begins with "Imagine ..." inviting the reader to slip into the culture and beliefs of the origins of the tale. A one sentence abstract further sets the stage, and Zeitlin puts each tale into context before going on to relate the story. Each myth is given thoughtful consideration as to how it fits in with the others.
The illustrations by Chris Raschka are a bit disappointing. He made an effort to research each period and culture to render appropriate patterns and drawings, but like the text, the illustrations fall flat. Rectangles in shades of gray cover and confuse instead of illuminating. The graphics, many of which incorporate traditional patterns, would have made lovely borders instead of single page pictures. Color would have made the illustrations less static.
Too scholarly for children, and of little appeal to YA's, it is unclear for whom this book is intended. Zeitlin presents big ideas, big words, and some adult themes, but usually it is either younger children or college students who explore such folk tales and myths. The author is to be commended for promoting openmindedness, and for his ability to portray many different belief systems with respect. Perhaps this will fit into curriculum frameworks, be a jumping off point for teachers, or be useful to storytellers.

This book is fabulous! Our family received this as a Christmas gift, and it was the best one that year! It is a family keepsake, one that we already cherish, and will be cherished and passed down from member to member for many years. The writing is terrific, and the pictures are awesome! I can't begin to tell you how important this will become to your family. My daughter begs to read the stories over and over again. It is a refreshing, wonderful way to share bible truths with your children. It is a gift that keeps on giving, and I can't wait to share it with those we love!

      Book Description

Steve Young has encountered seemingly insurmountable challenges at every step of his football career. As a freshman at Brigham Young University, he was the Cougars? eighth string quarterback. After working his way into a starting role, Young had the dubious honor of living up to the legacy of BYU passing legend Jim McMahon. Following BYU, Young signed with the Los Angeles Express of the fledgling United States Football League, but the league folded after a handful of mediocre seasons. His next team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, were perennial doormats in the National Football League.
When he finally signed with the competitive and respected San Francisco 49ers, Young was relegated to a backup role behind Joe Montana, then considered the greatest NFL quarterback ever. When at last he replaced Montana in the 49er lineup, the media and 49er fans forced Young to live in his predecessor?s shadow.Though under continuous pressure, Young never lost touch with his own identity. Whether scrambling to avoid the clutches of blitzing linebackers or trying to live up to impossible expectations placed on him by 49er fans, Young remained devoted to community, religion, and his fierce desire to succeed.
Young?s focus and tenacity culminated in his legendary performance in Super Bowl XXIX. After a long wait, Steve Young finally emerged on top. Against all odds, he became the quintessential hero, a man millions of fans respect and admire. This is the story of his triumph. About the Author
Laury Livsey is a writer and editor in Salt Lake City, where he lives with his wife and two children. His articles have appeared in numerous national magazines and newspapers.

5 out of 5 stars Very Insightfuland Well-written........1999-02-05

I read this book when I became a Steve Young junkie while at BYU. I am still at BYU, and still a S.Y. junkie, but at least now I know a lot more about the man. The authors of this book seem to have gotten close enough to the protagonist to show some of the most private aspects of his personality. I got a truer sense of who Steve really is, what he believes, and why he comports himself the way he does. Apart from being well-written and chronologized, the book provided a lot of back-ground kowledge with regards to Steve's football career, starting out with his college experience, as well as some of the challenges he had to face in the AFL and NFL, right up to the point where he led his team to a superbowl victory during the 1994 season. It also invoked a lot of compassion in me for Steve Young, because one only has to read the book half-way to realize that the path he had to travel to success was not an easy one. It has inspired me in many ways. I would recommend this book not only for people who are interested in the 49er Quarterback, but also for those who don't favor him that much, or who don't really know a lot about him. For those of us who will never meet the guy, this is the closest we will ever get to his inner-self, to understanding where he's coming from, and perhaps, eventually understanding Steve, the man.

5 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on Steve Young.......1998-10-24

A lot of books have been written on the 49ers' great Quarterback Steve Young but none is as deep in details as this one. It is entertaining, absolutely interesting and (i would say) formative because it teaches about how fulfilling our dreams, heading in the good direction...I loved this book.

5 out of 5 stars The best available book on Steve Young!.......1998-06-24

This book is informative and brilliantly written. Unlike the other books on Steve Young that I have read -- books which often rely on "angles" about this man's life -- this book is an honest and compelling account. It's writing is tight and detailed. I loved this book.
