Pete Maravich: Magician of the Hardwood (Great American Sports Legends)
Mike Towle Manufacturer: Cumberland House Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1581823746 |
Book Description
Pete Maravich might not have been the greatest basketball player of his generation, but he was unquestionably the most exciting and entertaining. A magician at handling or shooting the ball and the most prolific scorer in college basketball history, "Pistol Pete" was as recognizable as he was flashy. If the mop of brown hair and floppy gray socks didn't give him away, the behind-the-back dribbling and between-the-legs passes did.Maravich first captured the nation's attention while playing basketball for his father at Louisiana State University, averaging an incredible 44.2 points per game over three years and earning college player-of-the-year honors in 1970. He went on to play for ten years in the NBA for the Atlanta Hawks, New Orleans Jazz, and Boston Celtics, garnering NBA First Team honors twice and Second Team honors two other times. In 1976-77 he led the league in scoring with an average of 31.1 points, including a 68-point outburst in a game against the New York Knicks.
"Pistol Pete" was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. Less than a year later, at the age of 40, he collapsed while playing basketball with friends and died an hour later.
While he has been gone for more than fifteen years, his on-court showmanship and off-court charisma endure for millions of basketball fans who fondly remember him. In Pete Maravich: Magician of the Hardwood, players, coaches, friends, fans, and relatives recall the soft-spoken man who turned away from heavy drinking and turned toward God. Maravich's life is an inspiration for all who love the game of basketball and appreciate the contributions made by one of the best ever to play it.

Not for big Maryland fans.......2003-02-13
When I heard about this book, I had an idealistic hope that the book would be very detailed and interesting- Barr was the beat writer, the books title ('the inside story') , and because it took so long to come out (why wasnt it out before xmas?). i assumed it would have a ton that we didnt already read in the papers, saw on tv during the games, talked about on message board, etc.
but it didnt. It was just a summary. A great story but Maryland fans have heard it already.
I didnt really learn anything new from the book. it was very short (about 190 pages) , and i finished it in less than 2 hours probably.
There werent a ton of factual errors but the ones that were in were blatant and annoying. For instance, he says that Maryland lost to Arizona in the NCAAs the year after Steve Francis left, but any casual Maryland can tell you that is mistaken.
The question is - is Josh Barr just trying to make some money off Maryland's successful season? You decide.
A hell of a read.......2003-01-23

Book Description
Magic Johnson may be the enduring face of Michigan State basketball. Mateen Cleaves came to represent its heart while leading the Spartans to the 2000 national championship. Gregory Kelser, however, personifies the soul of the program. Kelser collaborated with Johnson to lead MSU to its first NCAA title in 1979. Here he discusses his role in the Spartans' victory over Indiana State and Larry Bird and how that game triggered college basketball's surge of popularity that continues to this day. He also provides insight and opinion on the successes, failures, players, personalities, and coaches who came before and after him at Michigan State, including Jud Heathcote, Tom Izzo, Scott Skiles, and Steve Smith.

The Game Changer: How Hank Luisetti Revolutionized America's Great Indoor Game
Philip Pallette Manufacturer: AuthorHouse ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1418496359 |
Book Description
"Hank, the nimble; Hank, the quick; Hank, the human corkscrew; Hank, as fast as light; Hank, the rubber-boned man," wrote Roy Cummings after seeing a 19-year-old Hank Luisetti perform for the first time in 1936. Cummings sat alone in a deserted gym trying to describe to his readers what he had just witnessed on the basketball court. Luisetti, who learned the game to a background chorus of fog horns and seagulls on San Francisco Bay, would quietly and furiously shock New York's basketball legions into the era of the jump shot. Now Philip Pallette has created a riveting account of the basketball life of this eminently shy and decent young man who transformed Stanford basketball from a group of fun-loving dabblers into unofficial national champions. The Game Changer rediscovers the long-forgotten adulation basketball fans felt for Luisetti's journey through boyhood on his way to becoming basketball's first matinee idol and the man who changed the game forever.Customer Reviews:
