No athlete has changed his sport the way Tiger Woods has transformed the world of golf. The Tiger phenomenon has created a new legion of golfers, seduced by Woods's almost effortless mastery of this most difficult game. In How I Play Golf Woods reveals the many facets of his game and offers a plethora of tips and advice aimed at all levels of play. Unlike most golf guides, and perhaps somewhat surprising from a player best known for his long game, How I Play Golf begins with the short game--putting, chipping, and pitching--before moving onto swing mechanics and hitting off the tee. Produced in conjunction with the editors of Golf Digest, the book is lavishly photographed and illustrated and offers a gold mine of useful ideas and mental images Tiger has collected over the years. Throughout, Tiger recounts memorable shots from his relatively brief career; for example, his only "perfect" shot (a 3-wood on No. 14 at St. Andrews) and his first putt at the 1995 Masters (a 20-footer for birdie on No. 1 that missed and rolled off the green). How I Play Golf is not only a first-rate instructional guide, it also communicates a passion and respect for the game that beginners, hackers, and low handicappers should find inspiring. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

Easy Read.......2007-09-13
I liked this book because it was very easy to read. Many of the tips were useful for me. My only hesitation for a five star rating were the numerous stories about how amazing Tiger is. I know he is amazing I don't need him to tell me that throughout the book.
Great book..........2007-08-16
If you are a fan of Tiger and serious about Golf you need to get this book...I definitely liked the quality of the illustrations... Quality pictures and explanations helped me improve my swing.
The way to play golf.......2007-08-15
Thirteen major championships, 59 PGA Tour Wins, $73,536,709 in PGA Career earnings, those are just a few of the things Tiger Woods has accomplished during his career as a professional golfer. His success has been based on the way he plays the game with sound fundamentals and a calm mind set. In How I Play Golf Tiger explains in detail how to prepare your body and mind to play golf before you ever step on the course. He gives his insights and routines for putting, chipping, driving, and escaping from bunkers. This book starts with the green and ends back at the tee the way he learned to play one step at a time.
Not many players can say they have a 2 handicap, even less can say they have a scratch handicap, only obout the top percent can say that they acomplished these feats at age 13. Tiger Woods was that age when he had a scratch handicap. My point is that Tiger is one of the best and the way he playes is the best of our time. If you want to learn to play like the top one percent buy this book.

As a retired LPGA Teaching Pro, I find this book extremely helpful for my students. I have recently given this as a gift to my nephew who I am currently helping develop his golf swing. Because of Tiger's relentless search for perfection in swing techniques, the pictures are extremely valuable to my lessons. I highly recommend this book to all golf lovers.

Kate DiCamillo's first novel Because of Winn-Dixie won a Newbery Honor in 2000 for the no-nonsense charm and wisdom of its down-home young heroine, Opal. Also set in Florida, The Tiger Rising is more of a short story in scope, the tale of 12-year-old Rob Horton who finds a caged tiger in the woods behind the Kentucky Star Motel where he lives with his dad. The tiger is so incongruous in this setting, Rob views the apparition as some sort of magic trick. Indeed, the tiger triggers all sorts of magic in Rob's life--for one thing, it takes his mind off his recently deceased mother and the itchy red blisters on his legs that the wise motel housekeeper, Willie May, says is a manifestation of the sadness that Rob keeps "down low."
Something else for Rob to think about is Sistine (as in the chapel), a new city girl with fierce black eyes who challenges him to be honest with her and himself. Spurred by the tiger, events collide to break Rob out of his silent introspection, to form a new friendship with Sistine, a new understanding with his father, and most important, to lighten his heart. This novel is about cages--the consequences of escape as well as imprisonment. The story and symbolism are clear as a bell, and the emotions ring true. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
The National Book Award finalist from the best-selling author of BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE - now in paperback
Walking through the misty Florida woods one morning, twelve-year-old Rob Horton is stunned to encounter a tiger - a real-life, very large tiger - pacing back and forth in a cage. What’s more, on the same extraordinary day, he meets Sistine Bailey, a girl who shows her feelings as readily as Rob hides his. As they learn to trust each other, and ultimately, to be friends, Rob and Sistine prove that some things - like memories, and heartaches, and tigers - can’t be locked up forever.

Lovely, eloquent classic.......2007-08-17
This is a beautiful book, both in the style of writing and in the story itself, and is sure to be a classic of children's literature. The characters are so well developed that the reader feels as if they are looking in on a real town and its happenings for a brief while and it is a truly inspiring glimpse. This is not just a book for children but a poetic and touching little tale. I highly recommend it to anyone. This book stands up to multiple readings and join equally recommended classics such as Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson or the works of E. L. Konigsberg.
Cat Club Review: www.freewebs.com/hlgstrider.......2007-07-13
I think I like The Tiger Rising better in retrospect than I did when I read it. It's a lot like looking back on how your parents raised you and realizing that all the go to bed, eat your vegetables, and occasional spankings weren't random acts of cruelty but rather a part of a plan implemented out of love. Likewise it took me awhile to recover from the cold shock of Kate DiCamillo's ending to appreciate all she had done in this book.
The Tiger Rising is the story of two children: shy, sad Rob who has recently lost his mother, and stubborn, sharp Sistine whose father ran off with another woman abandoning her in a small, southern town she hates. Both hate school and long for friendship . . . enter the tiger.
A tiger does not belong in a rusty, iron cage behind a southern hotel, but that is where he is, and the wonder of this creature captures the children. What is there to do but allow the tiger to escape?
The writing is truly amazing. As Rob puts it (about Sistine, but it applies to Ms. DiCamillo):
"Her words sounded the way all those things made him feel, as if the world, the real world, had been punched through, so that he could see something wonderful and dazzling on the other side of it."
Also, I always hesitate before calling someone a Christian author. It's as if I think the moment I do a P.R. Agent will write me and inform me that actually she is a Shiite Muslim, so I won't call Kate DiCamillo a Christian author. I will say, however, that she is an author Christians can rest comfortably in and have no fear.
She is a great writer.
Another Great DiCamillo Classic.......2007-07-07
The Tiger Rising was another great book by Kate DiCamillo. I picked this one up after reading The Tale of Despereaux and falling in love with that one. I've become a huge fan of her after reading these two books and can't wait to get my hands on a copy of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.
The Tiger Rising centers around a young boy by the name of Rob who keeps his emotions wrapped up inside. His mother has died recently and he and his father have moved from Kentucky to Florida so that his father could escape the heartbreak of losing her. They now live in the Kentucky Star Motel. His father has instilled in Rob that he should not show tears over his mother's death and that he should be strong, so Rob packs all of his emotions away "into a suitcase." He does this in all aspects of his life. He's picked on at school and instead of getting upset, he ignores it. Instead of voicing his dislike of anything, he pretends to not be bothered by it.
There's a new girl in town by the name of Sistine and she has the opposite problem of Henry. She has too much anger and displays it outwardly to everyone and comes off as quite arrogant. In a twist of events, Rob and Sistine become friends.
Rob has made a discovery that there is a tiger being kept in a cage in the woods behind the motel that he and his father are living in and shares this secret with Sistine. Thoughts and emotions are shared between the friends and a wise maid by the name of Willie May who works for the motel.
The Tiger Rising, like Despereaux, faces issues head on. Kate DiCamillo is not afraid to work with strong emotions and when she does address them, she does so beautifully. This book is written wonderfully and can be enjoyed by anyone. I can see it being especially meaningful to a child who has gone through loss of any kind at a young age.
Short, insightful story..........2007-06-10
Kate DiCamillo is the author of the Newbery-winning The Tale of Despereaux and the recent The Remarkable Journey of Edward Tulane. The Tiger Rising is a young adult novel from 2001 about twelve-year-old Rob Horton, the friend he finds in Sistine and his grief concerning the death of his mother. It's a short, insightful story.
the tiger rising.......2007-06-04
I think they should read The Tiger Rising because it is a good book but at the same time it is sad. And it has alot
of cool stuff to. And i think its mean sometimes to cause animals die. Sothat is why you should read this book.

There are a few basic qualities that can help folks of any age live a happier life: a sense of personal responsibility, good sportsmanship, willingness to share time and feelings, and the all-important trustworthiness. These basics can be easy to forget in our busy daily lives, and that's why Start Something is such a handy little book to share with friends and family members: it helps you remember what's important. Earl Woods, author of Training a Tiger, and his son Tiger have put together a wise and friendly manual for being a better friend, student, teacher, and community member, and it's so plainly written that middle schoolers can make as much use of it as their grandparents.
Kids starting a new activity or school will find help in pages labeled "It's Ok to Be Nervous" and "If You Don't Know the Answer, Ask for Help". Plenty of grownups can gain from checking out sections like "Control Your Anger" and "Don't Spread Rumors." Role models, both being one and finding one, are an important part of this book, and readers are encouraged to look beyond famous accomplishments to see personal characteristics--as Tiger says, "I don't consider other athletes to be my role models, although I admire them for their abilities. My role model is my dad." Each of the book's many sections are short and to the point; few run over two pages in length. Start Something is an easy read, one that can be shared aloud and discussed with children of all ages. --Jill Lightner

GREAT ADVICE.......2002-07-20
Parents and their children will love this great book where Earl Woods challenges young people to make a difference in their lives. As the father of champion golfer Eldrick "Tiger" Woods, Earl Woods shares his motivational philosophy of life for building character. He gives young people good solid advice in dealing with life's obstacles and coming out a winner.
Earl Woods lays down those old fashioned values of honesty, courage, integrity, respect and others that are essential in living in today's world. Each section begins with a question or comment that Earl explains and later has Tiger share his own thoughts about the subject. Thus you have a beautiful combination of father and son encouraging young people to achieve excellence in their lives. It is moving to read Tiger's sharing of his relationship with his father.
Get this book as a gift for that special young person in your life. Use it as a resource in motivating your students and raising your children to become responsible men and women. Our children are precious jewels. They will make a difference in this world.
A book to treasure.......2001-04-22
I read the book and am planning to buy three more copies, one for our church library and one for my two oldest grandchildren. Children who are looking for a hero can trust that this book will be an inspirtation to them. The principles used by the Woods family while raising Tiger Woods are extremely admirable for people of all ages. It is easy reading and gives positive ideas on how to live our lives.
"Be a winner . . . in your own life." -- Tiger Woods.......2000-10-06
Earl and Tiger Woods team up in this book to provide great advice for children on how to make the most of their lives. The book begins with an introduction by Tiger that talks about the importance of being a role model, and describes his Dad as his. From his Father, he learned to "share and care." He challenges young readers. "With your help, I believe that we can make a difference in the lives of others across the world. I challenge you to join me."
The rest of the book contains advice by Earl for young people, the same advice that he gave Tiger. At the end of many sections, Tiger adds a quote that endorses and amplifies how he internalized these messages. Although explicitly aimed at youngsters, this book is equally valuable as role model information for parents, especially Fathers.
The key message is that good habits make for a better life. The book has about 70 brief essays that detail these good habits. Space limitations here prevent listing them all, but I thought they were all well worth articulating. Here are 19 of my favorite sections:
Follow your passion, not the pack.
Did you help someone today?
Unload your past mistakes.
Shut down the jerk who teases you.
You can pick your friends, but not your brothers and sisters.
You are a leader.
You have to start somewhere.
Notice the kid everyone ignores.
Respect your body.
Take responsibility for yourself.
Complaining is for cowards.
Are you listening?
Say hello.
What are you proud of today?
Keep promises.
Say you're sorry.
Say thank you.
Ask others about themselves.
Read newspapers.
Tiger Woods fans will revel in some of the stories in the book. One of my favorites is about Tiger when he was five. Earl and Tiger were watching a news program, and a story came on about children starving during the famine and civil war in Ethiopia. Earl told Tiger that a friend of Earl's was going to Ethiopia to help. Without another word, Tiger went into his room and brought back some of his cherished gold coins he collected and asked his father to send them to help the children in Ethiopia. Any parent would be proud to have such a child, even if he couldn't play golf!
Tiger's great golf ability is handled well in the book. Earl and Tiger make it clear that how well you hit the ball doesn't matter, it's what kind of person you are that counts. This message comes through loud and clear, and should help steer some young people away from the frivolous lives that many professional athletes live.
You will be proud of the Woods family as you read this book. It will reaffirm your faith in humanity and in positive role models. It is a truly heartwarming book in every way.
After you have shared this book with young people and begun to model your actions on Earl, think about how else you could be a good role model. What is your special gift that can inspire others to become a role model? Let me repeat Tiger's words here. "With your help, I believe we can make a difference in the lives of others across the world."
Love being a role model!
My Kids LOVE This Book!.......2000-09-30
Now we know why Tiger Woods is such a winner--he believes that everyone can make a difference in the world, and this book shows how. Written by his dad (and clearly his best friend), this book has great ideas for kids/teens about how to get involved, make friends, be a team player, get along with parents, and be a bigger, better person. We especially liked the entries that addressed dealing with bullies and racism, and how to be a good winner and loser. Positive role models are so rare for kids, especially from the sports world. Tiger is a real treasure, and so is this book--it will be our #1 gift to give this year!

TIGER TRAITS Reviewed by Ralph Williams.......2007-04-16
Nate Booth's Tiger Traits has a wonderful way of exposing the tiger inside each of us. Even better, Nate takes on the role of a seasoned, professional caddy and shows each of us how to play the championship course of life. As anyone who plays the game of golf will tell you, there's more than one set of tees to play from. After reading and applying Nate's observations, I will feel much more confident playing the game of life from the championship tees.
When Nate writes about discovering one's natural talents, he gives us clear direction on what we should look for. When it comes to our individual weaknesses, he shows us how to manage them with honor.
While many may buy this book because of its reference to Tiger, I recommend this book because it gives all of us a better chance to tap into the natural and developed gifts of the author, Nate Booth.
In closing, I bought a copy of Tiger Traits for each of our five grown sons. It's a club I want in each of their bags.

How to find what you are good at and then use it to make your life better.......2007-04-07
One of the staples in the business - motivation literature is the use of sports and sports heroes to illustrate a set of constructive traits the author shares with you. Here, Nate Booth has written a book that motivates the reader by illustrating the nine principles he provides in the book (and a tenth bonus principle online) through the life and career of the phenomenal golfer, Tiger Woods. The author is clear that Tiger has NOTHING to do with the book, does not endorse it, and is in no way affiliated with him. I guess this disclaimer is necessary in this age of total marketing, branding, and so forth. However, if you go to your bookstore and look at all the books based on the lives of various people without their endorsement, you could fill many shelves.
The main focus of the book, as I read it, is about taking control of your life by finding out what you are truly good at (the author provides you with some sound ways to tell), to develop a compelling dream around that talent, to get the right role models - teachers - supporters who will help you along the path, being confident, getting the right mental models, talk through actions, continually improve, be likeable (as an aside, while Tiger is famous and charismatic, I am not sure he is necessarily likeable nor am I sure he is concerned about it), and giving back.
Booth provides a post nine-hole (nine-principle) cool down where he summarizes of what he was trying to teach through the book and hopes the reader has learned. He also offers some recommended reading.
The book is NOT only about Tiger. Booth provides some excellent quotes from all kinds of past greats, from Aristotle, Woodrow Wilson, Winston Churchill, Mark Twain, Walt Disney, and even Jiminy Cricket (and many others). I enjoyed these brief quotations a great deal.
If you enjoy motivational reading and are interested in Tiger Woods, this is a book for you.
My Post-Book Cool-Down.......2007-04-06
Tiger Woods had to wait two years after winning his first big tournament, to win a second one. Did he ever get discouraged? You bet, but he never let consistent losses kill his spirit. Dr. Nate Booth urges us to apply the principles of winning to our business problems, for the solutions that worked for Tiger might also help us earn more money and success. The traits of likability (it is said that Tiger never forgets a face and always remembers the names of the children and wives of everyone he meets) will put you in good stead when it comes to your career and success will be a birdie in the hand.
Booth is an exciting and spirited writer. I would love to see him do a fullscale informercial that would help us put the story of Tiger in perspective. He's got a nice balance of inflation and restraint, and he knows his facts. Most people know Tiger is of mixed race, but Booth has the eugenics at his tingertips. For the record, "his father is half African American, a quarter American Indian and a quarter Chinese, and his mother is half Thai, a quarter Chinese and a quarter white." Booth allows us to see Tiger's rise to fame as steps on a Joseph Campbell like journey--the hero with a thousand faces, and here, a thousand races.
All the same, there's something a little crazy about this book, for although it says in big letters that Tiger Woods and the Tiger Woods Foundation have nothing whatsoever to so with TIGER TRAITS, it's selling largely on Woods' name, not on the name of Dr. Nate Booth I presume. Isn't there a law against this kind of abuse? It would be like if I wrote, say, a cookbook and called it "Tiger's Recipes," as long as I had a disclaimer saying, "These recipes were not tasted nor tried by Tiger Woods, but they were inspired by his joie de vivre." I would call that cheating, but apparently in the world of business books and motivational speakers, anything not nailed down is fair game.
Book Description
The first extensively illustrated autobiography by one of the world's greatest golfers
Widely regarded as the greatest golfer in history, Jack Nicklaus won 73 PGA Tour victories in his illustrious career, a record 18 of them in major championships, including six Masters. His expert performances under pressure have earned him permanent residence in the pantheon of sports, and his sportsmanship and respect for the game make him the ideal model of a modern professional athlete.
In Jack Nicklaus, his first fully illustrated autobiography, the legendary golfer offers the story of his life, both professional and personal, in his own voice. From the thrill of winning his first U.S. Amateur title in 1959 to the heart-warming ovation after a birdie on his final hole at the 2005 British Open, Nicklaus walks us through his most significant career highlights. We also get to know the man behind the legend, as he describes growing up in Columbus, Ohio; the true origins of his nickname; and his renowned devotion to his family.
In addition to rare photographs from the Jack Nicklaus Museum, the book features ten pieces of memorabilia reproduced as removable facsimiles. With intimate stories and a treasure trove of visual material, this collection is the next best thing to playing a round with the Golden Bear himself.

A Shrine for Jack.......2007-09-27
If you are at all interested in Jack Nicklaus and can't, by time or distance, visit his museum in Columbus, Ohio (on the campus of Ohio State University), then this book will be a nice visual replacement. Well organized, this book follows Jack's entire career as well as his relationships with his teacher, Jack Grout, his parents Charlie and Helen Nicklaus and his wife Barbara. Especially nice are several pages of reproduced "mementos" in cellophaned envelopes for easy retrival and review.
I would recommend this book highly to all golfers who have any admiration for the Golden Bear.
A "Must" for Those Who Admire The Golden Bear.......2007-05-01
It sounds "trite" and simple to say it, but this book is a "must" for those who love golf and admire the qualities Jack Nicklaus brought to the game, talent, work ethic, competitiveness, success, and class. The epitome of what the game is meant to be.
There are other, more indepth, books on Jack Nicklaus, but this one has it all, enough to appreciate the man, who is, what he stands for and his journey, a journey that has been a credit to the game of golf and has inspired many of us who have followed his career and the values and principles he has demonstrated so effectivly.
There are many replica mementos, a letter from Tiger Woods, copies of his scorecards, Masters invitations and such that give this book a nice touch, a nice feel. Overall it is a comprehensive keepsake album of Jack, his career and the game of golf in his day.
Simply put: "A must" for those who love golf and admire the Golden Bear.

The first thing you'll learn in this book, which details how Earl Woods raised his son, Tiger, to become probably the greatest golfer who ever lived, is that your child will never be another Tiger Woods. Tiger is a prodigy in the sense that Mozart was a prodigy. But even if your child has completely ordinary abilities, Training a Tiger shows how to pass on your love for a sport to your child. Most of the book is specific to golf, but the same lessons can be applied to any activity.
Book Description
An educator, top-ranked college ball player and Green Beret who served in Vietnam, Earl Woods reveals the instruction and training secrets that went into raising a child who might be the greatest golfer ever. His teaching method starts with the simplest swings: Putting, chipping and pitching, and doesn't introduce the full swing until the basics have been mastered. The book includes dozens of games and competitions to make golf fun and interesting, teaches mental toughness and emphasizes skills, posture, balance, set-up and grip.
There are also some subtler points for parents to consider: when and how to introduce golf (or any sport) to their child; how to lay the groundwork for open communication; and how to cultivate the right attitude toward competition. Through an intelligent mix of instruction, humor and common sense, Training a Tiger helps parents everywhere lead their kids to love the game, and to play it with confidence, patience, proficiency and passion.

Does not work.......2007-06-01
I bought this book to help me take care of my new baby tiger, Thundercat. All I found was a bunch of crap about golf and black people. In the end, the tiger died. I tried to stuff a golf club down it's gullet but nothing happened except it threw up all over me and went to sleep. Overall, I do not recommend this book if you care about your new animal friend or are an animal lover AT ALL.
reply to reader with no brains from June 17th 2003.......2006-05-04
This moron is a jealous racist. Everything he said is wrong. He should know what he is talking about before he speaks. Earl never asked Tiger to go golfing with him. The only way he would take him is if Tiger asked to go. Tiger is Stanford educated, insanely rich, the best golfer in history, never been in trouble and calls his dad his best friend. I would give anything to be sure my kids were half the person Tiger is. If you read this book and got nothing from it I feel bad for your kids. By the way he is the best dressed person on tour!!
A plus book.......2005-09-05
This book is great! Anytime you can read about wonderful parenting, it is a highllight in your day. As the mother of 2 boys I can only hope to be so self sacrificing as Earl Woods. Whether you are into golf or not, all children could benefit from more attention from their parents. This book is about putting the child first and helping them make their dreams a reality. While so many children watch tv all day, it sure is refreshing to read about a parent who demonstrates the real meaning of parenting-take the time to train the children up right and they will end up as you trained them. Earl is truly an inspiration. Thank you for writing the book if you read this email Mr. Woods.
Good Book.......2003-10-20
In Pete McDaniel's, Training a Tiger, Tiger Woods shows you basics and in depth steps to golf. This book will show you how to start a your child in golf, equipment, putting, short game, driving, practicing, and in to mental mechanics. The authors purpose for writing this is to show young kids how to golf. It is worth reading if you want to improve your golf game or your childs.
Nothing but a "stage dad".......2003-06-18
Well, I think the fact there are only three reviews of this book before mine pretty much sums up how popular it is.
As I write this, there is a show on TV called "American Junior" -- a take-off on "American Idol" in which children with prodigious singing voices try to become stars. The most striking feature of the show, however, is not the kids' talents but their parents' obsessions. They are trying to achieve vicariously, through their kid's success, the fame and fortune they were never able to achieve on their own. I think you probably get my analogy to Earl Woods.
By the way: I have a point to make about Tiger that has nothing to do with this book, really, but that I want to get off my chest. It has to do with his wardrobe. He is in serious need of a fashion makeover. Here is his customary garb:
1. "Poofy" (i.e., baggy-legged) pants. The effect is a little bit odd.
2. A standard golf shirt -- but with the top, collar button fastened. This is a distinctly child-like feature; normally the only people with top button fastened are little boys dressed by their moms.
3. A cap that is more rounded than that of other players; if you removed the bill and attached blades to the top, it would be a perfect propellor beanie.
What I'm getting at is that his working clothes are childish. When combined with his natural baby face, the effect is comical. I predict that 20 years from now, film of Tiger in his 20s will look as silly as film of golfers in the 1970's with their tight, plaid pants, wide white belts, and super-sized lapels on their shirts.
So Tiger -- please come up with a new look on the course to go with your fabulous game.
Book Description
As a young boy, Tiger Woods dominated the junior ranks, winning a record three U.S. Junior Championships in a row. As an amateur, he triumphed again, winning three consecutive U.S. Amateur Championships. And as a pro, he continues to dominate the world of golf, recently becoming the only man in the history of the game to hold four major championship trophies at one time: the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA.
With insightful and intelligent analysis, golf writer John Andrisani reveals for the first time the secrets that Tiger Woods has learned from family, fellow competitors, and teachers about the all-important mental game of golf. Andrisani shows how Earl Woods's lessons on course-management skills and the art of mental toughness have given his son an important edge over more experienced competitors time and time again; how Tida Woods taught her son the Buddhist values of patience, tenacity, and self-reliance. As well, Andrisani offers insights into the roles of former teachers Rudy Duran and John Anselmo in helping Tiger make the vital connection between mental awareness and good scoring, and how his present teacher, Butch Harmon, is passing on what he learned about the mental side of golf from legends such as Ben Hogan. Additionally, Andrisani shows how Dr. Jay Brunza, a clinical psychologist, has shown Tiger how to enter an intense "cocoon of concentration" while playing competitive golf.
Think Like Tiger gives golf fans a deeper appreciation of Woods's remarkable mastery of the inner game and shows how these same techniques can be applied to anyone's game for lasting improvement.

Not a Helpful Book.......2007-06-26
This is not a helpful book for anyone. The author uses Tiger Woods to sell this book but does not have any real information about Tiger Woods' mental game. He hasn't even interviewed him. I have substantial knowledge in sport psychology and do not think golfers or athletes will be benefitted in any way by reading the book.
HERO WORSHIP OR GOLF INSTRUCTION?.......2004-02-28
This one is one with which you have to read between the lines. Think like Tiger? Sure. Why not? Because there is to much more to the game than thinking through the game. Nicklaus, Watson, Palmer--even Tiger--have all spoken of the intuitive aspects of the game and how too much thinking can be the death of your next round.
John Andrisani, in his book THINK LIKE TIGER: AN ANALYSIS OF TIGER'S MENTAL GAME, wants us to believe that Tiger is a golf-a-matic, an android that has been programmed by thought and is constantly on autopilot. Yes, Tiger is one of the greatest thinkers in the game but he is still human as evidenced by his mediocre 2003 season. His strategies during that season were no different than in previous seasons but the results were.
So what happened? Golf, that's what happened. Golf is a streaky game. Think about David Duvall. He finally won a major and everyone said he was back. Then all of a sudden it was over. For now. That's golf and no one, not even Tiger, is above it.
Andrisani in THINK LIKE TIGER... seems to preach that somehow Tiger is above the game. Reading the book one would think that Andrisani is telling all the competition that they might as well accept second place because there is no way, really, to think like Tiger. So what does that say for the rest of us and why should we buy and read this book?
All is not lost with THINK LIKE TIGER... but you must be careful to see past Andrisani's all too apparent and excessive hero worship.
The book delineates some very good things about the mind game of golf. I would recommend that you read it. But don't expect a book that will shave strokes appreciably from your game.

"By age four, nothing bothered him.".......2003-08-14
In his analysis of Tiger Woods's mental game, Andrisani points out the methods by which Tiger manages to keep focused on his game and block out distractions and negative thoughts. Visually programmed by his father so that his mental image of the perfect golf swing became part of his psyche as an infant, he doesn't have to think about what he's doing right or wrong with his own swing. Introduced to Buddhism by his mother when he was a small child, he knows how to meditate and relax. Taught by coaches how to focus on where he wants his shots to go, rather than what's going on with his swing or his score, he knows how to get into "the zone." And he may, according to Andrisani, employ a post-hypnotic code (through very slow eye-blinks) to keep himself from being distracted.
The book does not, however, give the reader a way to "learn the secrets of Tiger Woods's mental game and think your way to lower scores," as the jacket suggests. While Tiger's methods work for him, it's probably too late for the rest of us to learn and apply these methods, and the pointers about imagining where you want your shots to go and trying to relax are not new. Andrisani's admiration for Tiger and his "handlers" is overwhelming, and it's hard to take seriously the statement of his first teacher (after his father) that he felt "a little like a house painter being asked to redo the ceiling frescoes of the Sistine Chapel" when he was asked to help the eleven-year-old Tiger to improve. While the development of Tiger's mental game may, indeed, resemble "the forming of a diamond," and "the making of fine wine," some of us would be happy with cubic zirconia and plonk. Mary Whipple
Well...maybe........2003-03-28
Okay, let's think about this one. Is Tiger Woods the golfing machine that John Andrisani wants us to believe he is? Or is he human, at the pinnacle of his game and cruising? Golf is all about streaks. Think about Johnny Miller. At the top of his game everyone was saying that HE was the next Nicklaus. Then all of a sudden it was as though he had been abducted by aliens. Go, Tiger, go! But I won't be the least bit surprised when the streak ends and Tiger ends up stumping Mizuno or Maxfli or Golfsmith instead of Nike.
Well...maybe.
The book does bring to the table some very good things about the mind game of golf. Tiger aside, this book could have been just as good without Andrisani's overt Tiger Woods hero worship that literally drips from every page.
Go ahead and read it. Not too bad, really. Not too deep. Definitely not earth shattering.
An outstanding look into what makes Tiger tick!.......2002-08-30
As anyone who is serious about golf knows, the game is 90% mental. Renowned teaching professional John Andrisani draws on interviews with Tiger's Mom, Dad, ex-coaches, and current one Butch Harmon to piece together what tips have made him into perhaps the greatest player the game will ever know. That being said, anyone who wants to improve at golf NEEDS to read this book. Lessons with pros are fine, IF you have unlimited time and money to pursue them. Save yourself both strokes on the course, grief, and money by getting a hold of this book! One of the most impressive aspects of 'Think Like Tiger' is the tips Butch Harmon learned from one of golf's other all-time legends--- Ben Hogan which are passed on here. Additionally, it is interesting to learn that Tiger's mother Tida introduced him to Buddism which he uses to relax, calm his mind, and meditate. His father Earl also tells how he prepped Tiger on the need for ignoring all distractions etc by rattling golf clubs during his back swing and other tricks to build his total focus. There is even a claim made that Tiger saw a hypno-therapist named Dr. Jay Brunza, a former navy man to help him with his pre-shot routine. This may be speculation, but then again, it may not. After all, who could possibly completely explain Tiger's total domination of a game so fickle and capricious? In short, it's fair to warn the reader that 'The Man' himself DID NOT collaborate with Andrisani on the writing of this book. However, Adrisani's keen insigts into all aspects of the game and his other reliable sources, more than make up for this short-coming. I found this to be a short, and incredibly insightful read. If you really want to play better golf, do yourself a favor and get your hands on a copy of this book A.S.A.P!
Book Description
While golf is seldom thought of as a sport for minorities, Tiger Woods has made the sport appeal to a whole new demographic. When only a teenager, Woods accomplished many junior records in golf and enjoyed unusual attention for a young person. While not yet thirty years old, Woods' impact on American culture goes beyond the world of sports. And his celebrity status has made him probably the most recognized known athlete in the world. This biography describes the life of a child prodigy who has so far lived up to his potential. It includes information on his early life, the influence of his parents, and the relationship between celebrity and the media. A timeline is included highlighting significant events in his life, along with a bibliography of print and electronic sources.

Sure, it's the 300-plus-yard explosions that draw oohs and ahhs and envy from the gallery, but it's the soft touch around the putting surface that saves strokes and wins tournaments. When Woods is on, his short game is as good as it gets--accurate, deft, creative, even, as the title of Andrisani's analysis implies, magical; when he's not, he's just another grinder down the pack regardless of his awesome power and potential. Andrisani, collaborator on fine instructionals with Fred Couples and Butch Harmon, casts his seasoned eye on Woods's marvelous facility around the green in a slim volume packed with useful information, examination, technique, and drills. In clear, simple prose with accompanying pictures, he uses Woods as the model for pitching, chipping, sandplay, and putting-- starting with his preshot routines (reading lies, selecting clubs, and visualizing shots), and continuing with Woods's address of the ball and follow through. By deconstructing Tiger's technique, he aims to help you construct one that works for yourself. "There is no doubt that Tiger is a genius," Andrisani observes, "but he wasn't born a superb short game player. He built this talent through hard, imaginative practice." Andrisani's target--well hit--offers a foundation for going out and building your own.
Book Description
Tiger Woods' superb short game--imaginative, versatile, and based on rock-solid technical skills--has helped propel this exceptional young golfer to superstardom. In The Short Game Magic of Tiger Woods, John Andrisani, author of The Tiger Woods Way: An Analysis of Tiger Woods' Power-Swing Technique, shares his discovery of the secrets of Tiger's creative and winning short game to help golfers of all levels learn to lower their scores and improve their games.
Drawing from his independent study and analysis of Tiger Woods' game as well as from the insight of top teachers--including Claude "Butch" Harmon, Jr., Tiger's coach--and top pros such as Greg Norman, John Andrisani offers detailed, easy-to-follow instructions on the four elements of Tiger's outstanding short game:
Pitching Magic
Hitting on-target wedge shots and being imaginative are hallmarks of Tiger's flair for pitching.
Chipping Magic
Reading the lie correctly, knowing when to give the ball more air time than ground time, or vice versa, and alternating between a wristless and a wristy stroke are tactics used by Tiger for hitting the ball close to the cup.
Sand Play Magic
Knowing the right path to swing the club and how far to hit behind the ball are critical links to playing
both basic and more sophisticated sand shots like Tiger.
Putting Magic
Learning to emulate Tiger's pure pendulum stroke will help you sink more long, short, and curling putts.
Complete with full-color photographs of Tiger in action and detailed illustrations showing the key elements of his short game, along with commentaries by top professional golfers and instructors,
The Short Game Magic of Tiger Woods will teach you how to play like a champion.

check print date before buying. Tiger changed his swing completely after this book. Still a good value but a little dated.
Sound Fundamentals and Advise.......2005-06-03
Almost any golfer will agree that the `short game' is one of the most important parts of the game; if you hit a bad drive you can still recover, but if you miss a shot with your 8-iron or wedge, you've lost a stroke. Most golfers (even the pro's) would agree that Tiger Woods' short game is better than most, even those same pro's. This book isn't magically going to make you play like Tiger Woods next time you're out on the course, but it will give you a bit of insight on some good things to practice to help you improve your playing and lower your score. It does a good job describing why certain shots work the way they do, and where and how to use them effectively. There are four sections, pitching, chipping, sand, and putting, that explain several of the different types of shots that Tiger has been known to pull out of the bag and use in situations you might find yourself in next time you play. Each section includes several tips on how to handle bad situations and concludes with a set of suggested exercises for improving techniques relating to the chapter. Many of the situations, and even some of the shots, are fairly simple and/or commonplace, but they will all contribute to your developing a creative insight as to what you might be able to accomplish when you hit the ball yourself. Have you ever pitched over a building in the middle of a city, or putted on a gymnasium floor?
WANT TO JOIN THE FAN CLUB?.......2004-02-29
I've been trying to figure John Andrisani out. My first look was THINK LIKE TIGER and now THE SHORT GAME MAGIC OF TIGER WOODS... Well I think I have finally pegged Mr. Andrisani: He's the unofficial president of the Tiger Woods fan club. Like THINK LIKE TIGER, SHORT GAME MAGIC is far too much about Andrisani's regard for his hero and nothing special when it comes to the subject: improving your short game.
Sure, the fundamentals are there but presented in the same way as of a variety of similar books by other golfers. The thing that you have to remember about Tiger is that his short game becomes moot because his long game makes it all possible. Whereas a pitch shot of any of us earth-bound mortals is 70 yards and in, For Tiger a pitch shot may be as long as 150 yards. HELLO!
Want a great book about the short game? Go with GETTING UP AND DOWN, the short game masterpiece by the undisputed king of the short game Tom Watson.

Experts and fans alike were skeptical when Tiger Woods switched teachers and swing techniques almost ten years into his record breaking career. But his new swing has worked, putting Woods back on top. The overall improvement in Woods game has everyone asking the same questions: what is he doing differently since switching to teaching guru Hank Haney, and how can I use these lessons to improve my own game?

tiger's new...i mean old swing.......2007-08-17
I completely agree with the previous reviewers. This is complete nonsense.Haney is very much closer to the Jim Hardy school of thought(one plane flat) than Butch Harmon is.In fact Tiger's woes with the driver have continued and it's interesting to note that for the US PGA he seemed to be back to a slightly steeper plane which,as we all know,he went on to win. This book makes no sense to me at all.
Tiger's new swing.......2007-05-13
excellent book, skip first chapter and go to the following. requires more than one reading for proper comprehension and comments from your pro if you are middle or high handicap.
Andrisani Does It Again!!!!.......2006-06-27
How many times can John Andrisani reach perfection. Every book has the proper recipe for greatness. Illustrations, quotes, and a language that is easily translated onto the practice tee and course. Andrisani is clearly at the top of his field. A must read!
A great addition to the Tiger Chroncles.......2006-05-09
Sometimes so much is written and talked about a living legend, Tiger in this case, that it's easy to get lost in the endless details of events and lose sight of the bigger historical picture. John Andrisani always paints the big picture built on the detail of his well practiced observations. He has spent a lifetime chronicling the great players and the evolution of the game as an editor and author. He combines a sharp eye and savvy writing talent to give us many important contributions to the ongoing conversation we golfers will forever have about our favorite game. This book is like sitting around the fire with friends on a rainy Sunday afternoon as we reflect on the current challenges faced and overcome by the greatest golfer or our time.
Padding, Padding, Padding.......2006-05-03
How does an 8 page article become a 127 page book? By the most annoying padding ever attempted in a single book.
The author wanted to sell a book, but had no material. He never talked to Tiger or Haney. He used photos from a driving range. What does he do to fill the pages? Mention how many majors Tiger has won-at least every chapter. Tell the reader he was once an editor at Golf Magazine- 15 times. Plug every book on golf he's ever written. Write a chapter on the grip. Say it is important- quote everyone who said the grip is important. Talk about Hogan. Tell about his book. Mention Nicklaus. Never write 6 words when 80 will do. Here is an example- He doesn't write "Tiger won the 2005 British Open." Instead he wrote, (this is an actual quote!): "On Sunday, July 17, 2005, Tiger Woods raised his already great game to an even higher level to win the coveted claret jug that is given to the winner of what Americans call the British Open and golf aficianados overseas refer to as the Open Championship. On that beautiful Scottish evening at St. Andrews, the home of golf, Tiger was also crowned the 'champion golfer of the year' as he was given the gold medal presented to all champions."
There is more, but I don't want you to throw up.
