Book Description
Crime Scene Photography is a book wrought from years of experience. The material has been carefully selected for ease of use and effectiveness in training, and field tested by the author in his role as a Forensic Services Supervisor for the Baltimore County Police Department.
The forensic photographer, or more specifically the crime scene photographer, must know how to create an acceptable image that is capable of withstanding challenges in court. The photographic theory and principals have to be well grounded in the physics of optics, the how-to recommendations have to work, and the end result has to be admissible in court. Crime Scene Photography blends the practical functions of crime scene processing with theories of photography to guide the reader in acquiring the skills, knowledge and ability to render reliable evidence.
* Contains over 500 photographs
* Covers the concepts and principles of photography as well as the "how to" of creating a final product
* Includes end-of-chapter exercises and a companion website that gives variations on correct and incorrect approaches to the exercises
Customer Reviews:
A great all around photography reference!.......2007-10-12
There are many books out there on this increasingly popular field, and this one is the best I've seen! Some texts in the field, even ones updated in the last year or two, have non-existent information on digital concepts and equipment. This text covers it. The chapter contributed by Dave Witzke adds further to the substantial information presented. The chapters on photogrammetry, IR/UV photography, special situations, and legal aspects contribute to a very good foundation for grasping the concepts necessary for success in crime scene imaging. The examples of photographic theory depicted in the photographs and illustrations are very good quality, and illustrate the principles clearly. After nineteen years in the field, this one is my pick!
Mediocre Photo Book.......2007-05-14
I was disappointed in this book. I waited so long to be able to afford it and I feel that I paid 10 times what the book is worth.
As a photography instructional book, it is mediocre. As a book to help advanced amateurs learn crime scene photography, it is next to useless.
The first chapters put me off and I skimmed the rest of the book looking for the value - I did not find it.

Bad Dog. No Biscuit........2006-11-29
A book that might have been enjoyable was ruined by the constant right-wing slurs against the policies of Democratic presidents. The partisan rhetoric was ill-informed and certainly overused in the book. Not only were many of the statements grossly exaggerated and incorrect, they disrupted the flow of the story.
Perhaps these rantings were added to disguise some of the predictable turns in the plot. Patrick you are a Bad Dog.
My review.......2006-11-06
A quality suspense/thriller novel about undersea warfare, and its never-ending possibilities. Had a very hard time putting it down. As a former sub-sailor, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Truly weak.......2006-08-29
If you have sampled the work of good military techno-thriller authours (Ed Beach, early Tom Clancy), this book will seem truly pathetic.
The problems are numerous: the primary antagonist is a skilled unarmed combat soldier, but apparently he only knows one way to kill a man (yes we "get it", hand rams nose up into the brain, very creative). How many times can you trott out the same scene?
Can you imagine a President of the U.S. to whom it needs to be explained that, yes, the course of a cruise missile can vary in flight according to a pre-set flight path. Can you imagine anyone in the audience for this type of book needing that to be spoon fed to them?
Or maybe the notion that Israel would keep a single prison, isolated by a bit of desert, with ALL of Hamas' worst offenders in one location, yet only have 30 or so guards for whole facility. El Al puts more security details on commuter flights.
Maybe you would like to hear about a Hamas general at the center of an Islamic terrorist force would allow a female to take a high ranking combat position on board a submarine of all places. It is completely absurd.
The book makes a valiant attempt at depicting the cat-and-mouse game of a nuclear sub sneaking it's way to the US West coast, but it falls apart quickly. It's somewhat plausible that the rookie crew makes it to their launch point, but subs make an awful lot of noise when they launch cruise missiles, and that goes completeley unnoticed... 3 separate times. Not only that, but the US Navy, after realizing that they've got a boomer firing bottle rockets can't figure out how to find the thing. They listen and listen, but apparently forget something called ACTIVE SONAR. Not one US ship starts flooding the waters pings to flush out the rogue sub. No choppers dropping sono bouys, nothing.
To top-off the preposterous story line, the terrorists choose to scuttle the 350ft sub to hide all evidence. The best place to do that is over a six mile trench in the Pacific, right? Wrong, they'll do it in 70 feet of mud in a lake inside the panama canal; because otherwise the story cannot wrap up in a nice tidy bow describing how bad the Carter & Clinton administrations messed up the handling of the Panama canal.
Don't even get me started about the stupid political rants. The funny thing about the ham-fisted Democrat-bashing in the book is how ironic it turns out to be, since the novel goes into the future until ~2008: the author goes on about how America had the world on it's side (which it did) and withdrew from the Middle East after dealing with post-9/11 Afghanastan, with the Iran and other shaking in their boots about how the Great Satan would respond to more attacks on their people. Too bad the book was written before we made up the whole WMD thing, plowed into Iraq and lost any post 9-11 good will or sympathy we might have had across the world. OOPS. The author can't be blamed for the lack of 20-20 forsight given the date the book was written, but it is certainly humorouse given the clumsy right-wing preaching that even Rush L would probably find to be goofy at best.
A true waste of time.
Barracuda 945 Goes Off the Deep End Along with the Author.......2005-08-12
Others have summed up this book rather well: it's beyond pathetic. Take an interesting idea, and add in implausible plotlines, undeveloped characters, a completely unconvincing ending, and gratuitous right wing polemic, and you've got a book like this. It is really sad because the author showed a lot of promise with his early novels, which are worth reading. Unless Robinson wises up, he's lost a lot of his readership, myself included.
Bad Read.......2005-07-28
I am (was) quite a fan of Robinson, although I have been progressively dissapointed lately with each new novel. I tried to read this with an open and enthusiastic mind. Well, the beginning was okay. But one quarter of the way through I was battling terribly, I finished it out of duty. The days of Nimitz Class and Kilo Class are clearly gone, and are not coming back. The story is absurd. It moves at a painfully slow pace. The characters are undeveloped and dull. This book paints an idiotic view of the US administration. Okay, perhaps it is on the mark there presently, but Arnold Morgan is even more ridulous than anything I can imagine even in the current US administration, and there is a lot of latitude there already! The general flow of the story is all too predictable, and I cannot recommend it. If you've never read Robinson before, rather read Nimitz Class or Kilo Class. If you have, then don't touch it!
Book Description
This book examines a series of processes (Islamization, Arabization, Africanization) and case studies from the Muslim societies of Africa over the last thousand years. In contrast to traditions suggesting that Islam did not take root in Africa, David Robinson depicts the complex struggles of Muslims throughout the continent: in Morocco and the Hausaland region of Nigeria; the "pagan" societies of Ashanti (Ghana) and Buganda (Uganda); and the ostensibly Christian state of Ethiopia. "Further reading" sections suggest how undergraduate readers can pursue research, and illustrations and maps supplement the text.
Book Description
Shipwrecked passengers on a deserted island: how will they survive? After their ship founders at sea, the Robinsons—father, mother, and four sons—find themselves stranded in an uninhabited, idyllic land. Young readers will enjoy watching them handle every crisis with cleverness and skill.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-10-03
I'm 52 yo. I read this book for the first time when I was 9, in the Portuguese version. Now I bought this pearl of literature to my young daughter. She is 14 and speaks English very well. She already read the entire Harry Potter saga and other books, like The Man and The Sea, etc. The classic story The Swiss Family Robinson and other books I received by the same order will be entertaining and important to learn more and more English. I'll expect to buy many other titles as soon as possible.
UNabridged??.......2007-04-04
I read this classic long ago and it left enough of an impression on me, through multiple childhood readings, that I still remember some of the lines word for word. The only problem is... they're not in here.
Now, I understand are that there are multiple translations and recensions of this work, so this COULD be an "unabridged" version of something closer to the original than what I first read - but if it is, then the original is nowhere near as charming and riveting as the version I recall. Everything here moves too quickly and simply, without suspense or detail; entire conversations are missing... and, most telling, "jumps" occur in which you think, "How did we get HERE?" This last is what makes me suspect that the "un-" was either an editor's mistake or a blatant bit of false advertising... but again, I'm no expert and don't have an "original" version to consult, nor could I read it except in an English translation anyway. Another point that makes the "unabridged" tag suspect is that some of the "lessons" are missing (i.e. Fritz getting scolded for "lying" that he brought nothing home with him, when his hands were obviously hiding something behind his back), and my understanding is that the author originally wrote this thing as one big lesson. (I may not agree with all the lessons, but why remove any part of a classic text?) The language, at least, hasn't been "dumbed down" for children (what an insult to children when we do that!), but it still reads like a simplified version of the story.
So I now own a book which I have little interest in reading, and have had to order another one... THIS time I used the "search inside this book" feature to find the exact lines I recalled from my childhood reading - and yes, I DID remember them exactly, they ARE in there. If you're curious, I looked at the scenes with Ernest classifying the agouti - "... listen to the great professor lecturing! He is going to prove that a pig is not a pig!" - and Franz objecting that "I should not much like to taste glue soup" - both in chapter 1, easy to find, and in this version completely missing. If, like me, you recall a richer version of the tale, try ISBN 0440415942.
That said, it's a nice solid hardcover edition with a ribbon bookmark. 1 star for a nice physical presentation. Now maybe I can find someone to pawn it off on.
The Swiss Family Robinson.......2007-03-19
This book, full of adventure, danger, and most of all, exciting discoveries and dangerous endeavors, will capture your imagination immediately.
Taken from their father's journal, this exciting book will engage you. A family of four boys, a mother & a father were shipwrecked on a desolate island w/absolutely no other people except themselves. Trying to survive in this dangerous wilderness is quite a job. Setting up several plantations, discovering giant skeletons, having an encounter w/a lion and lioness... these are only a few of the many exciting adventures they have.
This book I recommend for boys ages 8 and up. Girls may not be as interested as there are few female characters. I like reading this long book because of all the adventures in it. (Be sure to read the unabridged edition.) Like to read? Then you will like this book.

The adventure of Swiss Family report.......2007-02-26
I am Nicole Curtis a 6th grade student at Stanley British Primary. For my book report I
chose to read The Swiss Family Robinson. It was a captivating book about a family
stranded on an island. I enjoyed reading it very much.
The book Swiss Family Robinson had a lot of adventure it was about a family who got shipwrecked and used little bouts to get to land with all there animals and treasures. The family faced many problems at this island. They built two houses and the father, and his three sons named Fritz, Ernest Jack would go of on trips to find food and kill animals. There had been many hectic times in the forest on the island for example jack was in the woods with his brothers and a wild boar came after jack the dogs came after the boar to stop it from attacking jack his father and brothers were trying to shot at the boar but they were afraid they would hit one of the dogs but soon one of them hit and the boar was died and jack was pretty hurt. The dogs had been in many fits one had died from fitting a lion her name was Flora. After the family had been there for ten years Fritz the oldest son went on a trip and found a women Emily who's dad was sir Ewared Montrose and she had been shipwrecked also. Emily was a sister of the family now and soon after they found her a ship had came to their island and it had the Europe flag they were saved turns out Emily farther was looking for her. Some of the family decided it stay on the island cause that had everything there that they needed and they loved it but some of the family left to go back to Europe they new they wouldn't ever see each other again it was a though time for everyone. This is the summary of the Swiss family Robinson.
The author of this book had some hard words or words I haven't even heard of. It was pretty difficult to know what you were reading. But the author was very dscriprive she gave much information and painted a picture in my mind. I liked her writing I could understand what was going on in the book I could feel and picture what the family was feeling and facing and how hard it would to live on a stranded island. I would probably like to read an easer book my father thought it was a pretty hard book to read when he read little of it also. But I like it very much the author would kind of skip around like talk about on thing then move on to a different subject pretty fast. This is my opinion about the authors writing.

Customer Reviews:
Not just a house, design a whole neighborhood.......2004-09-17
Most of us like architectural books because we think, or possibly just dream of building our own ULTIMATE house. Here, however, is a book not on building a house, but on building an entire neighborhood.
It starts with a bit of history, the pattern books written in roman times. It brings them up to date with a survey of several American neighborhoods dating from turn of the century times. And finally it goes on to show what the authors have done as they designed blocks, sub-divisions and the like. It is intended to show what can be done to replace the common cookie cutter houses common in recent developments. It is a fascinating book that leads to thinking.

A very good appetizer for "Personality Disorders" lovers.......2006-04-16
This book is considered a very good introduction for "personality disorders" from the DSM point of view. It's very readable, illustrated with mnemonics, cartoon examples, media examples, more over it uses humour as an educational tool. It could be considered as an appetizer, rather than a comprehensive reference in this area. I would recommend it for medical students, residents and mental health workers. It can be helpful for non medical people interested to know more than personality disorders.
Practicle. Great book........2005-02-22
The best book I've read to be used with patients in helping them understand a PD diagnosis in a non-threatening way. Wonderful refresher.

This book is well put together. It is an excellent resource for the first time landlord.
Excellent book for new or experienced landlords.......2007-06-11
This book provides great suggestions to address frequently encountered landlord/tenant situations. I found the forms to be invaluable. There is a website and I believe associated software that contains most of the forms, however I just created the ones that I needed on my own.
Has everything you need to know.......2007-05-12
This book was an excellent investment. It's a bit wordy, but it has a ton of information for landlords. As a first-time landlord, it provided me with perspectives I would have never considered.
John Nuzzolese, President of The Landlord Protection Agency.......2007-03-14
With Landlording, Leigh Robinson shows newbies and experienced landlords a simple and professional way to handle the hurdles and pitfalls of residential property management. The book includes easy to read instructions and examples of common situations experienced when dealing with tenants. Over the years, I have read just about every landlord and property management book on the market and I must say Landlording is an Essential.
Great information.......2007-03-06
Great information, although I wish it included a CD or a website where you could download all the forms for free.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2006-01-27
From the opening pages, to the last, this book summed up how to take your plant and make it "lean."
I have used the guidelines in the book at work and it has seemed to work seemlessly.
The information was sound and true. If you are looking for a down to earth approach and a way to get it done, then get this book!
A user looks at the guide after implementing Lean.......2001-10-05
This book is written in a lean manner. It is simple, common and easy to read. It describes ordinary things and ideas very clearly and with one purpose. This book provides all the roadmap, tools and insight needed to allow plants to achieve excellence. The authors take great pains to address common failures issues. They provide a single source handbook that any plant can understand and use, a source with example metrics and tools, with logic and simple ideas to prevent and overcome the daily issues faced by the team that implements Lean.
This is not a book that deals much about soft issues. It is not a fuzzy warm feeling book about the people side, nor is it a motivational "you can do it" book. It is a frank easy to read book about simple steps and simple ideas that make plants great. It explains the people issues and the fact that unless working teams make the decisions and changes Lean will not happen. It is a long book, more of handbook length, but much easier to read.
Lean Manufacturing: A Plant Floor Guide fills the space between a detailed "How To" text and an overview. It provides coverage of every key issue in moving to Lean Manufacturing, offering rationale, plans and encouragement.
A great reference!.......2001-10-04
From understanding your customers needs, metrics, building a solid business case and launching a methodical process, this book has all the tools necessary for a sound lean transition.
Perhaps most importantly, it offers reliable advice on overcoming resistance and building an effective team.
Book Description
Paul Mellon (1907--1999) was an unparalleled collector of British art. His collection, now at Yale in the museum and study center he founded to house it, rivals those in Britain’s national museums and is unquestionably the most comprehensive representation of British art held outside of the United Kingdom. This book and the exhibition that it accompanies celebrate the centenary of his birth. Five introductory essays examine Mellon’s extraordinary collecting activity, as well as his role in creating both the Yale Center for British Art and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in London as gifts to his alma mater (Yale 1929). A lavishly illustrated catalogue section showcases 148 of the most exquisite and important paintings, watercolors, drawings, prints, sculpture, rare books, and manuscript material in the Yale Center’s collection, including major works by Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs, John Constable, and J. M. W. Turner.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-10-10
I found this book very disappointing because is almost 100% devoted to painting forgeting the sculpture and other art forms. I was hoping for a book devoted to Paul Mellon's passion for british art! The illustations presented in it are of very good quality so if your interest is only painting then you may find it worth considerably more than I.
Incredible book about an incredible man!.......2007-05-10
Gorgeous photographs of the artwork and in-depth views of this intensely private and fascinating man, Paul Mellon. Thanks so much for finally creating this masterpiece!
