Cisco® ASA, a new unified security device that combines firewall, network antivirus, intrusion prevention, and virtual private network (VPN) capabilities, provides proactive threat defense that stops attacks before they spread through the network.
This new family of adaptive security appliances also controls network activity and application traffic and delivers flexible VPN connectivity. The result is a powerful multifunction network security device that provides the security breadth and depth for protecting your entire network, while reducing the high deployment and operations costs and complexities associated with managing multiple point products.
Cisco ASA: All-in-One Firewall, IPS, and VPN Adaptive Security Appliance is a practitioner’s guide to planning, deploying, and troubleshooting a comprehensive security plan with Cisco ASA. The book provides valuable insight and deployment examples and demonstrates how adaptive identification and mitigation services on Cisco ASA provide a sophisticated security solution for both large and small network environments.
The book contains many useful sample configurations, proven design scenarios, and discussions of debugs that help you understand how to get the most out of Cisco ASA in your own network.
âI have found this book really highlights the practical aspects needed for building real-world security. It offers the insider’s guidance needed to plan, implement, configure, and troubleshoot the Cisco ASA in customer environments and demonstrates the potential and power of Self-Defending Networks.â
–Jayshree Ullal, Sr. Vice President, Security Technologies Group, Cisco Systems®

Very Helpful.......2007-07-03
Excellent reference book. I wouldn't want to curl up with a cup of hot cocoa and read it from beginning to end, but it was an essential tool in a recent firewall migration at my workplace. It also seems to be just about the only book about the relatively new asa platform.
Great book........2007-05-08
This book has been very helpful for me. The only issue that I ran into was that the VPN section was a little outdated.
Excellent book.......2006-11-03
This manual was excellent! Definitely something to keep at your desk as a reference.
Good reference.......2006-01-27
This book helped me a lot. I recently deployed over 250 ASAs and was running into a lot of problems with the IPS SSM and VPN features. I got most of my answers from this book.
Very Amatuer.......2006-01-19
What a waste of time it was reading this book. If you are not very familiar with FW/IPS or VPN then this may be helpful, but if you have been working with this technology and Cisco's products that address these technologies (ASA, PIX, IPS, VPN3k) then please don't refer to this joke. Go online to cisco.com and do the research. Sometimes it felt as if whitepapers were copied and pasted.
Very dissapointed.

I'd rather watch the paint peel from my walls!.......2007-10-16
How can I sum "Boss Lady" up in a simple sentence? A countless hours of my life that I will never get back!
I read "Flyy Girl" in literally one day. Half the book in one eight hour session and the reminder in a six hour session. I have never been more hooked to a book in my entire life. In fact, Flyy Girl is the book that transitioned me from reading books for teens to adult fiction. I was happy when I found out there was a sequel for Flyy Girl a la "For The Love of Money". That book was, eh, okay, but it was nothing like Flyy Girl. Now we get to the disaster that is "Boss Lady".
"Boss Lady" makes "For The Love of Money" a MUST READ by comparison! I found Boss Lady at the public library the other day. It had been quite some time since I had found an interesting read by Omar Tyree. I tried to read "Just Say No!" but all I could do was say no to that book! Talk about boring. I started reading "Boss Lady" the day I got it. Four days later, I hadn't even made it to page 40! That's how incredibly boring the introduction of the book was. I can't stand a book that doesn't draw me in from the first couple of pages. The complete beginning of the book was a snoozefest at best. I had to literally force myself to read the endless pages of rambling and non-integral storylines.
The Vanessa Tracy Smith character has got to be the most boring thing since sliced bread. She was incredibly annoying and her grandiose, know-it-all, child prodigy personality made you want to strangle her to death. And as others mentioned, you couldn't find a real connection to any of the characters portrayed in the book. And what was up with that sorry attempt to emulate a Zane sex-scene, between Vanessa and Antonio? Here is a girl who'd been wary of boys--let alone sex--since the beginning of time, constantly talking about how "she didn't have time to deal with men" when she was only eighteen years old; giving this illusion that she was this respectable, young female who wasn't going to perpetuate the stereotype that "all young people want to do is carelessly have sex", only to then hop in bed with this Antonio character on a whim, all on the account that she was pissed with Tracy! I mean, I was expecting her to finally meet someone she was really into and after dating for a while, finally having a romantic night together ... not this ridiculous one night stand at a convention. Give me a break!
This book was the absolute epitome of the term "double talk". It seems like every chapter was just a reiteration of previous chapters before it. Hearing the same convoluted, tedious, mundane verbiage chapter after chapter in an endless repetition of meaningless blabber. This book could cure insomnia!
I forced myself to continue reading the book, convinced that all of this talk of turning Flyy Girl into a movie and taking trips to on-the-spot locations for film ideas, would just have to lead to something explosive sooner or later. How wrong was I? After over three-hundred plus pages of senseless rambling, Flyy Girl seems to just abruptly conclude out of nowhere. Honestly, it seems like there were at least another seventy pages to the book that were left out. It's like Omar Tyree had just put his typewriter away and said, "That's it! I'm done! Tired of typing now". Talk about leaving you hanging. You could almost see the question marks floating in a white bubble on top of my head in complete confusion. I was utterly dumbfounded.
And the fact that this book only served as a holier-than-thou, self-indulgent piece of literature for Omar Tyree, leaves me with an everlasting, sour impression of him. He thought he was so clever trying to discreetly give himself props all through this book when in reality; he just came across as a pompous, egocentric windbag. Constantly referencing yourself in your own novel has to be about as tacky and unprofessional as it comes. The nerve. Never again, Mr. Tyree. I am done with your books. I actually finished an almost four hundred page Kimberley Lawson Roby book (which was a million times better by the way) and another book, before I finished "Boss Lady". Horrible, horrible, horrible! All I can finally say is thank GOODNESS I had sense enough to get this book at the library. I couldn't imagine having paid $21.95 for that piece of literature garbage. Boss Lady: A Novel
Tracy is a professional woman.......2007-09-06
I like this book because of the message it sent. You have a young cousin coming to live with Tracy, she is not trying to get on the path to promiscuity and Tracy lets her know that. She is going to school and Tracy is a no nonsense businesswoman. I guess Michael Vick could have learned several lessons from Tracy as far as where her paper was coming from and who to associate with.
The Urban Book Source.......2007-08-13
Tracy Ellison Grant is the quintessential superwoman. With two celebrated novels and a slew of movies under her belt, her story is once again told in Boss Lady by her cousin turned protégé and personal assistant, Vanessa. In Boss Lady we are exposed to a grown up, wiser, and even sassier version of everyone's favorite Flyy Girl. With the encouragement of her cousin, Tracy is talked into taking her book Flyy Girl to the big screen. Hands on as always, Tracy dives head first into the project; from casting, screenwriting, and shopping her work around, Tracy is spreading her self and her motivation thin. Noticing that her cousin is slowly running out of steam, Vanessa takes the Flyy Girl film project by the horns, leaving Tracy the time to take care of herself and her always thorny love life.
It was ok.......2007-02-15
Omar Tyree is one of my favorite authors, but this book was not my favorite. When I read a book I usually like to read it from beginning to end. I read the whole book through because I was expecting more. I was disappointed with the ending. Also one thing, the dates for particular incidents were a little out of order, but I can understand why Tyree may have done it on purpose ; ej: Aaliyah's plane crash. Well I did like the characters, they were not too boring and seemed realistic, but I was expecting more of the book to be through Tracy's eyes not so much her young cousin, Vanessa. Anyway, I would recommend those who want to read the book, get it from your local library. Especially those who love all of the drama and overrated sex scenes, this would not be your type of book to spend money on.
What a let down................2006-11-06
It was okay but kind of boring. Just not what I expected to come after Flyy Girl. I loved Flyy Girl! It didn't hold my attention.
Book Description
For the first time, a first person account of life inside the jihad...
Between 1994 and 2000, Omar Nasiri worked as a secret agent for Europe's top foreign intelligence services - including France's DGSE (Direction Générale de la Sécurite Extérieure), and Britain's MI5 and MI6. From the netherworld of Islamist cells in Belgium, to the training camps of Afghanistan, to the radical mosques of London, he risked his life to defeat the emerging global network that the West would come to know as Al Qaeda.
Now, for the first time, Nasiri shares the story of his life--a life balanced precariously between the world of Islamic jihadists and the spies who pursue them. As an Arab and a Muslim, he was able to infiltrate the rigidly controlled Afghan training camps, where he encountered men who would later be known as the most-wanted terrorists on earth: Ibn al-Sheikh al-Libi, Abu Zubayda, and Abu Khabab al-Masri. Sent back to Europe with instructions to form a sleeper cell, Nasiri became a conduit for messages going back and forth between Al Qaeda's top recruiter in Pakistan and London's radical cleric Abu Qatada.
A gripping and provocative insider's account of both Islamist terror networks and the intelligence services that spy on them, Inside the Jihad offers a completely original perspective on the ongoing battle against Al Qaeda.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Read!.......2007-08-08
In my opinion, Inside The Jihad was a great book. It read like a good spy novel. I could not put it down. In addition, the book provided great insight into the minds of the Jihadist and the newtorks in which they operate. Moreover, I was shocked at the amount, and quality, of training the author mentions. As a former soldier, I was amazed at the vast topics of training these "soldiers" receive: weapons, documents tampering, infantry tactics, ect. Overall, a great book. I would, and have, recommended it to others.
Interesting, but not credible.......2007-08-01
Overuse of trivialized Muslim forms of address and the juvenile
nature of the writing make this book "incredible".
I'd bet it was written by someone with limited knowledge
(probably gained via internet gossip).
Described handler behavior was incorrect in many particulars.
Tradecraft descriptions were, at best wishful thinking.
Good novel, worth reading, but not at all believable.
Strong Narrative From An Insider. .......2007-07-12
In "Inside The Jihad" author Omar Nasiri (not his real name) spins a very readable narrative about his life as a spy for the British and French intelligence services, including a year-long tour in a terrorist training camp in Pakistan.
I was struck by the readability and clear understanding of the complex issues that surround the recruiting of terrorists and the real boots-on-the-ground, day to day life and training in the terrorist camps. Much different of course, than the prospective of Western outsiders looking in, even the very experienced ones like Bob Bair (23 years Middle East, CIA operative).
The readability of this book deserves special note. Even serious readers of the subject struggle with retaining the alphabet-twisting, dash-filled names common in the Middle East. But Nasiri helps with this by outlining each major character and his association with them, plus, re-outling in a separate section who they are. I found myself only having to refer to this outline on one occasion, a credit to the author's clear foundation of the characters the first time.
Nasiri reinforces two major facts known to serious students of the subject, but unknown to most citizens and, of course, the Main Stream Media who are basically both lazy and clueless: 1. Most terrorists are not downtrodden, slum dwelling thugs, but rather middle class, college educated individuals who are not dumb. 2. The CIA procedures, directed by the Left-leaning Administration during the '90's of not even contacting informants who are bad guys, left our intelligence forces grossly under-informed during that critical decade. Informers inform for many different reasons, many times far too complex to clearly understand, but that doesn't mean the information does not have value.
The reader caught drifts of self-serving narrative in the book, but this is common in books of this type and can be accepted or rejected as you see fit.
In both style and content, I found this book a solid 5-star effort and well worth the reader's time.
A Good Read.......2007-06-28
The book is told in first person, storied format, which made it really enjoyable to read. I could care less about whether or not it's non-fiction (which the author claims), it's a good, suspenseful espionage type story, that teaches you a little something.
I didn't read it looking for political knowledge for debate, I read it to have something to read, and it was good, plain and simple.
Great book .......2007-06-18
Great book! Easy read the author is a really good writer, he should write more. this book is so good that it has made want to learn more about the muslim religion and since I have ordered more books about it.
Get it!!!

Product Description
Evil schemes are afoot in Cauldron, a metropolis of merchants built into the caldera of a long-dormant volcano. To foil the agenda of evil cultists, your band of adventurers must brave haunted jungle ruins, slay mighty dragons, and bind themselves to a layer of the infinite Abyss. Will their swords and spells be enough to save the Shackled City?
Originally published as 11 linked adventures in the award-winning Dungeon magazine, the Shackled City Adventure Path is the most ambitious official Dungeons & Dragons campaign ever created. Now, for the first time ever, everything you need to play the campaign has been compiled into a deluxe 416-page full-color hardcover that also includes an 8-panel fully detailed map of the City of Cauldron, a 16-page full-color map and illustration booklet, and a brand new Shackled City adventure written by fan favorite author Christopher Perkins.
Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I was expecting.......2007-10-03
This seems like a good campaign overall if you are really looking for something to occupy a full level spread from start to end, but I found the presentation to be very linear and somewhat disconnected. It definitely showed its nature of being a rebinding of serialized adventures previously published in a magazine. On the plus side the artwork was generally good, though some of the artists shift throughout. The adventure itself is also a bit odd, involving a somewhat obscure brand of evil outsiders and a strained "big evil-doer conspiracy" somewhat in the vein of the classic Slavelords property, but with an even less plausible mix of conspirators who basically amount to little more than "level bosses".
I was hoping to see more tie ins with the setting of Greyhawk, the rumor of which is why I bought it, and while its kind of cool to have something to represent the little fringe of land south of the Sea Princes and north of the southern jungles, it's such an esoteric place to set an adventure on Oerth -- no one has a really good reason to go there, and there's pretty much nothing of note (from a cannon perspective) nearby. This may have been the point for the developers from the perspective of keeping it generic enough to be printed in Dungeon as a generally useful supplement, but it makes it of limited usefulness to most Greyhawk campaigns.
Finally my major complaint about the product is that the page background is a very drab tannish color that gets very tiresome and murky to look at for long.
Shackled City AP HC.......2007-05-10
I have a subscription to Dungeon and had all of the issues that comprised the SCAP so you would think that I wouldn't want to spend the money to upgrade to the HC. Well for a long time that's what I thought too. Then I got a good look at the HC. It's worth every penny, from the convienence of having the entire AP at your finger tips to the added details about Cauldron itself and the smoother transitions between adventures, Plus it includes an entirely new adventure.
pretty good compilation.......2006-08-12
I was pretty wary at fost when I saw this product, so I actually waited a quite a few months before I got it. Now that I've read through it and am ready to use it for play, I can see where they've tweaked it to flow better than it did during the original monthly release.
I do like the maps made, and the plot option paths are better, more cohesive without being railroading.
I do plan on getting the Age of Worms when it is available
Shackled City worth the investment.......2006-05-15
The Shackled City Adventure Path provides a complete campaign for the Dungeons and Dragons game taking player characters from 1st level through 20th level. This beautiful hard cover book contains 12 adventures that make it possible.
The adventures themselves are fairly strong, though some of the connections are a bit tenuous. Most DMs will want to modify the adventures in some ways, though the product is flexible enough to do that.
It includes some nice features, including a multi-page map book the DM can pull out and refer to conveniently. It also includes a poster map of the city of Cauldron (where most of the adventures occur) suitable for hanging. It has a pre-apocalyptic eruption on one side, and a post-eruption on the other.
The hardcover differs from the adventures published in Dungeon in that James Jacobs (An editor of Dungeon) has tried to rework some of the adventures so that they flow well together.
The only real failing is that the "bad guys" in the adventure are too successful at keeping a low profile. The final arc of the adventure is fighting a number of bad guys individually that the PCs have never even met.
This minor problem can be overcome simply by introducing some of the villians (if not their overall objective) earlier with some foreshadowing.
Great value in a great adventure.......2005-12-17
The price tag may look large for a "book", but only to those who haven't been following Dungeon. This single book (and it's a HUGE book) contains the adventures that were published one-to-an-issue in an 11-issue run of Dungeon magazine. To get those individual issues now would cost quite a bit more, and you would still need to go download plenty of suplemental material from Paizo's site.
The Age of Worms is the current onging path, and now there's talk about the possibility of these mega-adventures being turned into video games. This is probably more exitement than I've seen over "modules" for D&D since the 1980s. For new or returning DMs who are looking to set up a brand new game, this is a great way to go and will take months to complete, even if you game every week. If you're the type of DM who likes to hand-craft your adventures, consider picking this up and using sections or even just ideas. It's great material from some of the best in the business.
Book Description
What was once good just got better. Through the release of several feature packs, Microsoft has added 15 new features to their Windows Server 2003. As an IT professional, you are probably aware of what these features are and have installed them, but you may not be aware of what their full capability is and how to troubleshoot the system with them in place. Sams has published a second edition of the best selling Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Unleashed as an updated reference guide in response to these new features. Learn about the new Group Policy Management Console, Timewarp Client, Security Configuration Wizard and more as you plan, implement and administer your Windows 2003 environment.
Download Description
A fresh perspective on planning, designing, implementing, and migrating to a Windows Server 2003 environment. Rand Morimoto and his co-authors began writing this book using their experience from several very large client implementations, some having more than 100 servers in production. On a daily basis, as this book was in production, they had clients with thousands of users taking advantage of the Windows Server 2003 security, scalability, performance, and reliability functions months before the product release. Because of that unique experience, the authors of this book were able to compile the best practices, installation and migration tips and tricks, performance optimization techniques, configuration tuning, and server management techniques for the readers of this book. Rather than revising from previously published chapters in the Windows Server 2000 Unleashed book, this book was written completely from scratch with the belief that this approach would incorporate the true recommendations from the author team for best practices, tips and tricks to get the most out of Windows Server 2003 networking environment.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent job!.......2006-11-12
No problems. Book arrived quickly and in excellent condition. Considering this is a huge book, that is not a trivial matter.
Outstanding! Best Windows 2003 Book on the Market!!!.......2005-07-10
I've bought 4 other books on Windows 2003 to help me with our migration to Active Directory and have been disappointed with the real world experience in all of the other books. This was the first book that had tips and tricks based on real world guidance. I was amazed that the book covered Service Pack 1 being that SP1 just came out a couple months ago. Was VERY helpful as we struggled with our migration process over the past couple months, and after I bought this book last month, we were able to get a clear handle on our implementation of Windows 2003! Outstanding book, I highly recommend it!!!
BORING, and constant repetition throughout.......2005-07-08
I bought this book hoping to get clear, technical know-how from its authors. These other reviewers here helped to solidify my purchase. What a huge mistake. Chapter 1 thru 6 are CONSTANT repeating of the same points, over and over. I swear, chapter 2 is like chapter 1, as are the next few chapters. How many times do I need to be told about "transitive properties between forests, and compatibility with Windows NT and 2000... "? I kid you not, many many pages are repetitive. Chapters are repetitive. Did the proof reader not compare chapters between the various authors and red-line? It's as if they did not compare amongst each other, if indeed that's how the book got compiled.
Ok... Worse: I think this book is for the human administrative guy who needs to learn some concepts so that he does not appear like a complete idiot when speaking with Network gurus in the coffee lounge. This book is like trying to help people who know little about Networking to make a plan on how to migrate and create policies that should be enforced, etc. I feel like I'm in a mixed class of Psyche 101 and Business Relations 202 when reading this.
I have not yet read past chapter 6 but I have definitely skimmed ahead to see of the content seems any deeper and I'm disappointed. Are there many scanned images of the Windows 2003 Server screens? No. Very few.
To me, this is not a book for people who want to know the ins & outs of how to make the OS fly like lightning and all the tips & tricks one comes to expect for a book of this size.
Invaluable resource with clear instructions.......2005-06-29
Admins for the Windows 2003 environment are faced with a daunting task: Security in an inherently insecure world. This book is an excellent resource, with instructions that are clear and easy to follow. There is a basic knowledge assumed--this is not a book for beginners--but for the professional, this book is a literally a job saver. Included is information on Group Policy Management Console, Timewarp Client, Security Configuration Wizard and essential protocols. Well worth the investment.
1310 pages of wonderful stuff........2004-08-20
During the year and almost a half since Server '03 came out, Microsoft has released several Feature Packs. These have not only fixed bugs, but tightened security, and changed the way Server '03 would be implemented and supported. Each of these has been analyzed and incorporated into this new edition of this 'standard' book.
The CD contained with the book includes far more than the normal code samples and other useless stuff. Here are the Feature Packs, the Server '03 Tools, Windows rights Management Services Client and Server SDKs and 14 Webcasts by the author.
This is not a book that you'll want to sit down and read from front to back at one setting. It is, however, more than a reference book. the authors write with a sense that they know what they are doing. They've been there and done that. The writing style shows that they can compare what the OS does now in comparison with what it did in earlier versions. I found this to be of great help when I was trying to do something the old way and the book pointed out that this is the way its done now. The book is not a surprise, you probably know what you are getting and you won't be disappointed.
Book Description
Cisco Network Admission Control
Volume II: NAC Framework Deployment and Troubleshooting
The self-defending network in action
Jazib Frahim, CCIE® No. 5459
Omar Santos
David White, Jr., CCIE No. 12,021
When most information security professionals think about threats to their networks, they think about the threat of attackers from the outside. However, in recent years the number of computer security incidents occurring from trusted users within a company has equaled those occurring from external threats. The difference is, external threats are fairly well understood and almost all companies utilize tools and technology to protect against those threats. In contrast, the threats from internal trusted employees or partners are often overlooked and much more difficult to protect against.
Network Admission Control (NAC) is designed to prohibit or restrict access to the secured internal network from devices with a diminished security posture until they are patched or updated to meet the minimum corporate security requirements. A fundamental component of the Cisco® Self-Defending Network Initiative, NAC enables you to enforce host patch policies and to regulate network access permissions for noncompliant, vulnerable systems.
Cisco Network Admission Control, Volume II, helps you understand how to deploy the NAC Framework solution and ultimately build a self-defending network. The book focuses on the key components that make up the NAC Framework, showing how you can successfully deploy and troubleshoot each component and the overall solution. Emphasis is placed on real-world deployment scenarios, and the book walks you step by step through individual component configurations. Along the way, the authors call out best practices and tell you which mistakes to avoid. Component-level and solution-level troubleshooting techniques are also presented. Three full-deployment scenarios walk you through application of NAC in a small business, medium-sized organization, and large enterprise.
âTo successfully deploy and troubleshoot the Cisco NAC solution requires thoughtful builds and design of NAC in branch, campus, and enterprise topologies. It requires a practical and methodical view towards building layered security and management with troubleshooting, auditing, and monitoring capabilities.â

Are you ready to NAC?.......2007-03-07
The first volume for Cisco Network Admission Control series explains the architecture, design and components for NAC Framework. The second volume explains the production deployment as well as troubleshooting NAC Framework to build a self-defending network.
I found the second volume more helpful and practical as it provides technical configuration and implementation guidelines. The book is basically divided into four parts: NAC Framework solution Overview, Configuration Guidelines, Deployment Scenarios and finally Managing and Monitoring NAC.
I think that the first chapter is the most important as it explains the NAC Framework solution overview and the components needed to support it. It shows which Cisco network access devices and which Cat or Cisco IOS version support this feature. It explains the difference among NAC-L3-IP, NAC-L2-IP and NAC-L2-802.1X. The chapter includes Cisco online reference so readers can research each device in details and get the most up-to-date list of all Cisco NAC-enabled devices.
The next 11 chapters cover installation, configuration and brief troubleshooting tips for each component: Cisco Trust Agent, VPN Concentrator, ASA and PIX firewall, Cisco Security Agents and even some brief introductions for third party vendor appliances such as QualysGuard Scanner for audit servers.
The following 3 chapters describe the deployment scenario for NAC in small, medium and large businesses. These chapters offer 3 interesting scenarios but all of them are just recaps of configuration mentioned in previous chapters.
The last 2 chapters explain the NAC deployment best practices and NAC monitoring using Cisco CsMARS. The best practices provide guidelines to roll this NAC deployment successfully by completing a readiness assessment of the current infrastructure, identifying responsible party, building lab and test plans as well as tuning and post deployment monitoring. Having experiences in deploying security projects, I believe that they should also add organization security policy which is approved by top management for NAC deployment best practices. This policy will help to remove any major obstacles encountered from end users.
I found this book very helpful in explaining Cisco NAC Framework. The book is definitely not for beginners as understanding of Cisco configuration and familiarity with Cisco products are needed to understand this.
NAC Framework is not for everyone. If you run a Cisco centric shop with the latest hardware and software, this NAC Framework is for you to build the self-defending network on top of your Cisco network and host based IPS, firewall, 802.1X enabled network access devices and others. If not, a much simpler Cisco Clean Access or other third party NAC appliance can probably do the job with less complicated configuration and upfront investment.
The book does not mention anything about Cisco NAC Framework integration or configuration with the new Microsoft NAP (Network Access Protection) although Cisco has officially provided the plan to do this in its web site.
In conclusion, the author has provided a very concise and understandable reading with the few number of pages provided. Each chapter goes straight to the topics, explains in an easy to follow manner, provides a lot of configuration examples and screenshots and closes with online references.
I liked this book a lot and certainly will recommend others to read this. I gave the book five out of five stars.
Installing, Deploying, and Troubleshooting the Cisco NAC.......2006-12-05
It is generally believed that the biggest problems in network security come from the outside, but only sometimes is this true. The biggest loses tend to come from the inside. The people inside your company or organization know more about what there is to steal, how to create the most damage, and furthermore may feel that they have a direct reason to be angry and wanting to cause deliberate damage.
The second part of the problem is that todays organizations may have huge networks with many different areas to be protected from many different kinds of people, coming into the systems from many areas withing the organization including other facilities, suppliers, customers, remote salesmen, travelling executives, etc.
Cisco NAC Architecture and Design, the first volume in this series covers the protocols, design concepts, networking structure - in general the higher level preliminary setup of the NAC.
This volume covers the nuts and bolts of the actual installation and management of the Cisco NAC and the integration of the NAC into other Cisco components such as: VPN, ASA, PIX and more.
Book Description
As summer dawns on the island of Mistmantle, its inhabitants prepare for the coronation of Crispin the Squirrel. Robes are stitched, cakes are baked, wine is brought up from cellars, and the Heartstone -- the unique gold-and-silver flecked stone that only the priest or the rightful ruler of the island can hold -- is readied. But the newly established peace in Mistmantle is soon under threat. A storm-ravaged ship from a distant land appears in the mists surrounding the island; a dramatic revelation about the revered Heartstone comes to light; and the extra-sensory powers of a young islander reveal the evil close at hand. Urchin finds himself journeying to a hostile island, where the maniacal King Silverbirch and his sorcerer Smokewreath await him. Great fo kids.......2007-05-30
I bought this for my daughter last month and she can't wait for the next book to come out. I read the book as well and even though it is predictable, it is a very charming story. Kids with a [..]reading level should have no problem with the book and they will probably really get into the story.
awesome book.......2007-03-12
"I enjoy this book as much as the first one", says my daughter.
High interest reading for kids.......2007-03-08
As a teacher, I have read both Mistmantle books with my students. The first book was chosen from the book fair to be used in a Literature Circle. There were 5 students in the group. The second by popular demand...more than 10 students bought the book. The discussion was terrific. The kids loved it and couldn't wait to read!
Wonderful Sequel of "Urchin of the Riding Stars".......2006-08-30
URCHIN AND THE HEARTSTONE is the book #2 from the 3 book series THE MISTMANTLE CHRONICLES. It is as good as its predecessor URCHIN OF THE RIDING STARS. The book is packed with action and intrigue and, as usual, M. I. McAllister excells in her depiction of characters. The friendship, courage and wisdom of the main characters are the qualities that every child reading this book will relate to. This is a fairy tale with wonderful descriptions of far-away places that reminded me of all good things from my childhood: from the play in the snow, to my faithfull friends, to the sweets grandma used to make...
M. I. McAllister creates a wonderful world where the ideals of good, justice, courage, friendship and faith are being held high.
The drawings of the cover and at the beginning of each chapters are very well done and in tone with the book.
I recommend this book for children over 5 years of age. Adults that like to remember the good old fairy tales will absolutely love it.

Informative and attractively presented.......2006-11-12
As background, I am very much a novice when it comes to orchestration, and I read music only with great difficulty despite the efforts of several well-meaning piano teachers during my childhood. I do have a fairly good grasp of basic music theory and harmony, and I know my way around MIDI and digital audio pretty well. I mostly play by ear, just as a hobby for my own enjoyment.
I find that this book does a good job of meeting me "where I am", and helping me on from there. It is written clearly, with good examples and explanations. Physically, the book itself is exceptionally well made and very attractive.
I use the book mainly for guidance in using the instruments in Garritan Personal Orchestra in a Sonar sequencing environment, and it has been especially helpful for its insights on building ensembles and achieving a natural balance among the instruments.
revised opinion.......2006-11-02
When I first received this book I was disappointed by it. The first things I noticed where: 1) it does NOT provide a comprehensive introduction to orchestration (as another reviewer said); 2) almost half of the book consists of the author's opinions -- which are overwhelmingly positive -- of various softwares and sample libraries (information that is freely available on the internet and which is certain to be outdated quickly and which I don't want on my bookshelf and certainly don't want to pay for!) and 3) the book stank to high heaven when I got it, thanks to the chemicals used to print it in low quality hi-gloss color. Every time I touched it I felt like I had to wash my hands, as if they were covered in bleach or some other odious chemical.
So I contacted the publisher, asking if I could return the book. The publisher at first refused, saying that I hadn't ordered the book through them, so there was nothing he could do about it. But then I got a very nice letter from the author, offering a refund if I was dissatisfied with the book.
BUT....by then...in the midst of a film scoring project, I'd turned to the book and found it useful.
There are many little tips in this book that are helpful, inspiring, or both.
(Also, the chemical stench is starting to wear off.)
So I decided to keep it.
This book is aimed at folks who want to use software samplers to emulate orchestras in pursuit of the Hollywood sound. The author obviously has a great deal of experience and does have a number of interesting ideas about how to use software samplers to create soundtracks.
If you want/need brief introductions to the various intsruments of the traditional orchestra, that's here. If you want to write film scores but don't really want to bother with a book like Adler's guide to orchestration, this book can serve as a useful, though extremely basic, introduction to general orchestration principles.
But really, the book is focused on a specific kind of orchestration: the big Hollywood sound. As such, I find it useful, for 2 reasons: 1) there will always be clients who want that and 2) you have to know what the rules are before you can break them, and for better or worse, that 'Hollywood' sound rules the mainstream roost.
IN SUMMARY
The author is very nice, generous and knowledgeable.
The endless and endlessly glowing reviews in the book are annoying, but there are good advices to be had from this book.
There is absolutely no reason for this book to be 700 pages, or printed in glossy color. A 300 page
paperback in black and white, minus the software reviews, would be better.
It is not a detailed introduction to orchestration. Adler's orchestration book is much more thorough.
I'd prefer a book on this very specific subject -- using MIDI to imitate Hollywood orchestras -- that's half the size and half the price, but if you want to learn this material and eighty dollars doesn't seem like a lot of money to you, give it a shot. You may want to contact the publisher before ordering
re: their return policy if you have any thought that you might want to return the book, as there seems to be some confusion on their end.
Great source of MIDI production information!.......2006-10-26
This book is an exhaustive source of info for anyone who is trying to produce realistic orchestral music using MIDI instruments. The tips for each instrument family and the reviews of plug-ins are particulurly helpful. It does NOT teach MIDI, as one reviewer her plainly thought. For the experienced student or professional, however, it is a must have.
A Great Book.......2006-09-20
Guide to MIDI Orchestration is one of the best investments that I have ever made in my music career. I write symphonic music as well as some commercial works (to pay the bills). Both of these ventures require me to put together MIDI representations of orchestra on a regular basis. Anyone who has done this knows how difficult it is to consistently produce a great product, even if the music is great! GTMO shows how to do this, from start to finish, in a detailed way, that is not overwhelming because it is so methodically presented. I'm an experienced orchestrator and I soon found out that being able to write for orchestra and being able to produce a real sounding MIDI piece for orchestra are two totally different things. Gilreath's book has helped me to produce pieces that sound exceptionally realistic. I recommend this book to anyone doing MIDI orchestra work including classical composers, commercial composers and or course the guys doing games and film.
An Exception Book for composers.......2006-09-16
I am a music professor in NYC. I find Paul's book to be one of the most helpful and insightful books I've ever read and used. It is filled with pages of helpful information. My students and I are at two different places in our "professional" world, yet we both benefit from the book. There is enough basic set up and MIDI primer info to satisfy their needs (and my MIDI course) while the orchestration information is great for intermediate to advanced individuals, so I also use this book for my introduction to orchestration class. The real power of this book is this: It explains in a methodical manner the way to make your electronic orchestrations sound very real. Period. I have found no other book that does this. This is the second semester I've used the book for my courses and my students love it. This is a fine book deserving of serious consideration for anyone who composes for orchestra with MIDI.
