Book Description
"Todd Sones understands there is much more to being a great putter than a good stroke. In his book, you will find the knowledge of not only the stroke but also the setup, equipment, and mindset that will enable you to become the best putter you can be." -- Scott McCarron, Two-time winner on the PGA Tour, ranked 4th in putting on the PGA Tour in 1999 "Todd teaches the fundamentals of putting as simply and uncomplicated as anyone I've met. He understands the cause of what keeps people from putting their best and has the ability to communicate in a way that insures success." -- Robert Gamez, Two-time winner on the PGA Tour "I have had the privilege of working with Todd Sones for the last eight years. His simple and fundamental approach has been a great asset to me, and it will work for you. His book will enlighten you on how to improve your putting and lower your scores." -- Bill Harmon, Director of Big Horn Golf Club, Palm Desert, California, and one of Golf Magazine's Top 100 Teachers in America "Improved putting is the quickest and easiest path to lower scores. Golfers who really want to improve this part of their game can learn a lot from Todd Sones's approach. He covers all aspects of successful putting, including how to putt with a winning attitude, which is as critical as picking the right speed on a putt." -- Mike McGetrick, McGetrick Golf Academy, 1999 National PGA Teacher of the Year
Customer Reviews:
One of the best books on putting.......2007-09-16
Todd Sones book is one of the best two books on putting in my library (the other is Dave Stockton's Putt to Win). Sones covers setup, pre-putt routine, the stroke (he advocates a simple arm stroke -- in comparison to Dave Pelz's pendulum type stroke and whatever you would call Stan Utley's forearm rotation arcing stroke). I have found this book to be the best of the lot for this mid-handcapper.
bad book. Written for completely newbies.......2005-01-15
The book only contains very very basic stuff. There is only a very poor analysis of different grips' plusses and minusses and very poor (to no) instruction on how to actually do each kind of grip. The different schools of how to make a putting stroke are weakly compared and explained (for some strange reason author Todd Sones didn't feel any need to explain or discuss the stroke type that is most widely accepted as being the "correct" one namely the pendulum stroke!!!!. There is no real analysis (numerical or "scientific") of how the ball rolls or behaves on the green. Green reading instructions and conscepts are weak weak weak... It seems like he just summarized a few starters articles about putting and threw in a few references to some pros' putting technique. What a waste of money and time! If you wan't to learn how to really improve your putting and learn the proper and correct technique forget this book.
If you wan't to learn how to master the mind's game of golf forget about this book too and get "zen golf" (which is very good and intelligent). Peltz might be an alternative if you can stand his manic habit of endlessly repeting himself (which I can't)...
Good, basic guide to putting.......2003-01-28
Does a good job of covering both mechanics and psychology of putting. Touches on a lot of aspects of putting that other books don't, or maybe I should say that the way in which the author discusses subjects such as ball position, alignment, etc. is better at anticipating problems average golfers encounter when trying to follow the standard advice than many other books I have read.
I had bought Dave Pelz' Putting Bible earlier, thinking that would be the only book I would ever have to buy on putting, but was quite disappointed in the approach of that book. Sone's book gives much more useful information.
At the same time, it is a concise, quick read, and is arranged in a way that makes it easy to go back to certain chapters at a later date for a refresher.
Highly reccommended.
Putting is an arm stroke not a pendulum or shoulder stroke........2001-08-13
I have studied putting books for many years. I have been searching for a putting method that makes sense and works.I'm giving copies of the book to my friends and recommending it to anyone who wants to listen to me.
I'm glad I bought it.......2001-06-02
I've only read and practiced the advice in the first three chapters, but I've already seen improvement in my putting. Having confidence in my setup does seem to produce results.
Todd Sones' advice to position your hand underneath your shoulder appears to work best if you have a straight arm without an elbow. If you have an elbow, the arm's center of mass seems to force the hand slightly ahead of the shoulder, if you let the arm hang naturally.
Also, the front-view photos of different grips on page 18 aren't sufficient to understand what the text refers to.
But these are quibbles that don't prevent this book from getting five stars from me.

OK, I Guess.......2003-03-29
Why can't books of inspiration and insight have some humor that illustrates the points being made. I found this tape to be maudlin and overwrought with poignancy which did not inspire me nor shed any new insights. The stories were ok, but there is a lot more to golf than what I heard on this tape. Needless to say, I was disappointed.
Being There strikes home!.......2000-08-28
All of the stories were wonderful but "Being There" by Don Didio hit close to home. It brought back memories of my own father and what a great man he was. This story evoked feelings and memories that will last beyond time. Thank you Don!
a must for golfers.......2000-06-18
This read with the 101 different short stories and catchy quotes was very entertaining. I especially liked the one with the little girl that was playing by herself and carded a hole in one, unwitnessed, until the engineer of a passing train(the course boardered a nearby railway)sent a well wishing letter to her at the course. This and many others typify real golf experience to us golfers. If you golf, do yourself a favor and read this.
God does not subtract the time playing golf.......2000-01-21
My father GR O'Gara shows up on Page 74 and He has been up playing in heaven for Five Years! He would like to thank the person who put his quote in the book. He Loved God,Family and Golf, not always in that order! Just kidding!
A golfers wife.......2000-01-03
I am a golfers wife and proud of it! I am also a reader and really enjoyed the book. Some of the golfing lingo is confusing(I do golf also), but the book is well written. I enjoy reading about other people's experience with the famous and the not-so-famous, and the wanna-be famous. The Chicken Soup books can really pick me up on a down day. Keep them Coming!
Product Description
History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
One hot summer morning, William Hallberg sets off on an odyssey across the United States to penetrate--and illuminate--the soul of golf. No course is too grand, no driving range too humble for a stop on Hallberg's unpredictable tour of America's varying golf venues. He tackles Kiawah Island's diabolical and breathtaking Ocean Course with a party of well-heeled Southern gents. He tromps through sagebrush roughs in the Nevada outback. He encounters the ghost of a cherished golfing buddy during a memorable round in the Smokies. And between games he nurses his wounds, ponders his constantly mutating handicap, and commiserates with fellow golfers in dusky sports bars, greasy spoons, and rain-soaked motel parking lots.
Witty and wise, The Soul of Golf will make you laugh out loud, swallow hard in the face of painful truths, and, ultimately, head yet again for your favorite golf course where fate lies in ambush.

Golf's "Ball Four".......2007-03-10
I've owned this book for three or four years now, and I'm always picking it back up to reread sections -- usually on days when I'm wishing I was on the road headed somewhere new with my golf clubs in the trunk.
This book has basically the same wise-cracking tone as Jim Bouton's baseball classic "Ball Four." Whether one agrees with Hallberg's outlook on various topics or not, it's interesting and entertaining to read his often humorous thoughts on those subjects.
I did, however, notice a few factual errors in the text. For instance, there is no highrise building on Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina, as the book states. The building that Hallberg saw apparently was Sugartop on nearby Sugar Mountain.
A good read.......2000-10-18
This is an exceptionally well written enjoyable book to read on a rainy afternoon when you can't get out to the course. The only downer were periodic eruptions of Hallberg's boomer arrogance. Also disappointing was the fact he told all his golf partners that he was writing a book and he was going to put them in it!
Birdie on descriptions of golf, double bogey on the rest........2000-08-21
I looked so forward to reading this book after it was recommended by a friend, also an avid links lover. However, getting past the authors liberal genre and his views towards certain people of the "christian" persuasion left me disappointed. As a Christian, I wish I could have read the book without the typical liberal diatribe of "religion-bashing" and received more inspiration of how one can learn of life through the study and playing of the game. Too much of a slice to the left side of center for me. Bill, just stick to the vivid and well laid out descriptions of the course and leave the anti-christian prosletizing to someone else (that is, if you want to sell books.) Can I get my money back?
insightful, evocative writing.......2000-01-21
This is my favorite golf book. Well, it's not really a "golf book" per se -- obviously, it revolves around a golf trip, but Hallberg's descriptions of the value of family, friends, and the kindness of strangers are priceless. Contrary to what other reviewers have said, I think it's obvious that Hallberg cares deeply about his family -- aborting his trip would have done nothing to cure their health problems; but it would have deprived us of a beautiful, sensitive book.
While we're at it, I also liked his novel, "The Rub of the Green." Both it and the present volume are among that rare category of books that made me feel sad when I reached the end -- finishing the book is like taking leave of a good friend.
Well crafted prose reveals poor personal values........1999-05-26
William Hallberg brings us many insightful, poignant and well crafted passages about golf, companionship, and his personal biography. Unfortunately, his efforts get lost in what seems to be more a soul searching than the soul of golf. While reading passages about a wide range of courses, companions and rounds of golf so well written that I felt I could almost hear him speaking, I was, at the same time, deeply troubled that what sounds like caring man would neglect meaningful, adult responsibilities and relationships in favor of a traveling golf fantasy and potential book sale earnings. Ultimately, for me the Soul of Golf became more a story of how a man with wonderful literary, golfing and, by his own account, interpersonal skills bemoans his well earned guilt about leaving the sufferings of several family members behind in pursuit of what is, after all, a game. Ultimately, I think it missed it's mark.

i am not a golf fan and the closest i have ever got to the game,is the pitch and put at whitby, but never the less,i am a fan of lawrence donegans books.
all his books are about living the dream, from california,to ireland to being a caddy at a golf tournament.four iron in the soul, captures a moment in a mans life when,he actually pushes himself to something he always wanted to do,to partake in a pro golf tournament, sadly not as a golfer, but as the next best thing,a caddy.
even if you are not a golf fan,you can relate to moments in this book,as its a travelling life, interspersed with characters ,you can only meet in a life style like caddying.the books an eye opener,an emotional roller coaster of laughs and tantrums, its a book ,that once you pick up,you won,t put it down till you have read the last page.
Product Description
Peter Lightbown is a golf instructor with a difference a professional who, out of complete frustration with his own game, has developed a revolutionary approach to golf.
The endless quest for technical perfection is familiar to both professional and amateur golfers; an obsession which threatens to kill the simple pleasure of the game. As a professional, Peter realised that technical instruction only served to make his style tense and awkward. He no longer enjoyed playing and the quality of his game deteriorated until it occurred to him that he had to look at things in a different light, and develop a simpler, more natural and instinctive approach to golf.
The result is The Fairway Within, which draws on principles of Pilates, Yoga, the Alexander Technique, and Tai Chi to show golfers how to liberate themselves from the straitjacket of traditional technique. It offers a natural approach to improving and enjoying your game.
In this practical book you will learn how to move freely and spontaneously, and so uncover your own innate swing. When this individual and expressive movement begins to emerge, playing golf becomes the pleasurable and satisfying experience it is meant to be. Here at last is a method which takes golfers beyond external complexity, and reveals the internal principles of balance, relaxation and rhythm that underlie good style.
The Fairway Within is an inspired and inspiring guide that works for golfers at all levels.
Peter Lightbown turned professional in 1972. He has played and taught extensively, in Australia, London, Denmark, and Malta, and now teaches professionally in Sydney.
Cecilia Croaker is a former librarian. She and Peter live in Sydney.
