Excellent Choice for the Non-Math Student.......2007-03-31
This is a magnificant calculus book. It is aimed at students in business, the social sciences, and the life sciences. This is done by first the examples and problems. But perhaps even more important the wording of the text is such that these students will understand what they are trying to convey and to clearly show them how calculus can be used to solve problems in their particular field.
At the beginning of the book, three pages of the Preface, the applications discussed in the text are listed by: Business and Economics, Life Sciences and Ecology, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences. Under these headings are subjects like: Value of a Car, AIDS, Cancer Rates, Abortion Rate and so on. These are subjects that will have some interest and applicability to students rather than the old traditional problems like water flowing into and out of a bucket that used to be the mainstream of teaching calculus.
Finally, calculus marks a transition in the study of mathematics for a student. Up until now he studied arithmetic every year in school, maybe he finally got to a bit of algebra and trig. Now he is exposed to a whole new world of ways to handle problems that go beyond anything he has seen before. This book eases the student into an understanding of how to approach these problems better than any I've seen.
Harvard.......2007-01-31
Sorry to bother you with this review. The authors of this book are distinguished professors at Harvard University (a fine school, no matter what anyone says). Professor Gleason, in particular, is a mathematician of world-historical importance. In a sense, taking lectures from Gleason is not worse than having a lecture from Laplace or Poincare or any of the other great lights of mathematics. I confess that I haven't seen the book or held it between my hands, but I couldn't just leave it here with only a one star review of a disgruntled student. Really, the book has to be better than a single star if Gleason even held it in his hand once.

Solutions? Please!.......2007-05-17
This book only has every other odd. And the solutions are hard to follow, just like the accompanying text book. If I wasn't taking class in a classroom environment and only had the books to rely on I'd be in bad shape.
A waste of Money.......2007-01-05
This book was a real waste of money. Only a select number of odd problems were worked out, and it always seemed to be the easier problems. Much of the time just the answer was given, which could be found in the back of the textbook. This is the perfect accompaniment to a very confusing, poorly written textbook
Helpful for the selective few .......2007-01-04
This is a good companion book for the math book that follows. The answers are given in good detail and explained enough that you could follow what they are saying. The only real problem I had with the book was, it only had the odd answers. You are practically buying an extended version of the back of the book.
Useless solution guide.......2006-12-13
When doing problems for the textbook, it seemed that the solution guide did a pretty poor job in describing the correct way to do the problems. Oftentimes it did not even have a sample for each type of problem in the section review excersises. The solutions found in the back of the book were an adequate enough solution guide for at least the calculus class I had taken.
Not that you have much choice........2006-11-14
Not all odds are listed. Most of the ones needed in my course were not there, probably by teacher design. The text book that it goes with is just as bad. If you can take a class from somewhere else that uses another book especially if you need the examples to follow. I found it hard to learn from as a returning student.

Brand building is the heart of value creation for the 21st century corporation. The EMM Group authors have taken the mystery out of brand building and replaced it with process, metrics, and tools that any company can master. The book is designed to improve organizational and professional marketing management practices for brand value creation and enhancement. Why can these advances be adopted today? Because rapid advances in information technology now enable marketing to be engineered and measured for accountable investment in ways previously impossible. This new capability redefines the role of the marketing director in a profound way. It places him/her at the heart of the corporation's purpose-building the brand and delivering the bottom line with true accountability and the credibility not accorded the marketing function when it was perceived as an arcane art and unreliable process. This will enhance the ability if the CEO, CFO, and COO to leverage marketing to create shareholder value. Now senior management can hold marketing accountable just like other items on the P&L because real metrics will be available to evaluate its progress.

I did return this book.

This book is so pathetically minimal that I award it...1/10 of a star. (It may be useful in starting a fire in your fireplace...maybe). DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS SOLUTION MANUAL! It only includes about every other odd solution, and most of the time, it shows just the (often incorrect) answer. The worst part is, that same answer is usually in the back of the textbook! It is definitely not worth even $5.00, so save your money!

Book Description
The Third Edition of CALCULUS reflects the strong consensus within the mathematics community for a new balance between the contemporary ideas of the original editions of this book and ideas and topics from earlier calculus books. Building on previous work, this Third Edition has the same philosophy as earlier editions but represents a new balance of topics. CALCULUS 3/e brings together the best of both new and traditional curricula in an effort to meet the needs of even more instructors teaching calculus. The author team's extensive experience teaching from both traditional and innovative books and their expertise in developing innovative problems put them in an unique position to make this new curriculum meaningful to students going into mathematics and those going into the sciences and engineering. The authors believe the new edition will work well for those departments who are looking for a calculus book that offers a middle ground for their calculus instructors.
CALCULUS 3/e exhibits the same strengths from earlier editions including the Rule of Four, an emphasis on modeling, exposition that students can read and understand and a flexible approach to technology. The conceptual and modeling problems, praised for their creativity and variety, continue to motivate and challenge students.

This solutions manual is pretty much a waste of money (just like the textbook this is used for). For some reason, it answers every OTHER odd number. Basically answering problems 1, 5, 9, and so on. Other times, it actually skips some of those numbers!
The only reason why I gave it 2 stars is the fact that the problems the solution's manual does answer actually did help a little. Unfortunaly, it can be wrong once in a while, as my teacher can contest.
Don't waste your money on this unless you can find it for at most, a third of the price. Even then, the frustration probably still isn't worth it.
Calculus: Student Confusion Manual.......2002-02-07
This "solutions manual" only offers answers for every fourth question. The most painful part is that the so-called solutions are merely the answers from the back of the text book put into complete sentences; there is NO additional instruction.
Unfortunately, Amazon does not offer any way to properly rate this waste of money.
Book Description
Spanish-born architect Santiago Calatrava has achieved considerable international acclaim in recent years with his breathtaking feats of engineering in the service of elegant and humanistic modern forms. While his most recent success was the much-lauded (and much-televised) stadium, velodrome, and other structures of the Athens Olympics, Calatrava first established his reputation as the preeminent engineer of our time with a stunning series of bridges designed for cities around the globe―Barcelona, Bilbao, Buenos Aires, Orléans, Seville, Venice, and Jerusalem.
Recent years have witnessed the introduction of Calatrava’s elegant forms to the American cityscape with designs for an innovative apartment tower and the much-anticipated World Trade Center Transportation Hub, both planned for lower Manhattan. But before these designs were unveiled, Calatrava completed the Quadracci Pavilion at the Milwaukee Art Museum, which Time named the best new design project of 2001. This beautifully illustrated monograph is a detailed exploration of a celebrated American architectural masterpiece.
Calatrava’s spectacular cultural and civic projects have secured his place in the pantheon of world-class twenty-first-century architects. In addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum, he’s celebrated for train stations in Zurich, Lyons, Lisbon, and Liège; the Sondica Airport in Bilbao; the Tenerife Concert Hall in the Spanish Canary Islands; and the Valencia Science Museum, Planetarium, and Opera House.

Calatrava.......2005-10-16
This cocktail table quality book is a must for anyone who has visted the Milwaukee Art Museum. It presents a stunning array of dramatic photographs of the Calatrava addition. It is a must for anyone interested in architecture and the Amazon price makes it a reasonble investment. A perfect Christmas gift!

Rewarding Book.......2007-05-13
If you want to learn integration techniques and become a whiz at basic computational calculus, you need another book. If you want a book that gives you a lot of proofs and tons of examples, you also probably need another book.
So why do I give the book 4 stars? The answer is _the problems_. I used this book for 3 semesters of calculus, and I felt like _I_ actually discovered a lot of the machinery of calculus just by doing the problems. It's a great feeling to discover rather than be taught. That's what this book helps you do.
Of course, this means you will probably have to do a few more problems than the teacher assigns (unless the teacher is very in tune with the book and knows exactly which problems are related). Also, when you get to techniques of integration, you'll probably need to refer to other books for examples. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as it is always better to learn from multiple sources.
One big downside is the cost. But, unfortunately, that's a problem with all American text books. Try to get a used copy.
Oh and about the book and solution manual not giving many solutions... Don't worry about it. When you solve most of these problems, you _know_ when you get the answer because everything will click and make sense. As for integration problems, just plug 'em into your TI-89, Maple, or the free Wolfram Online Integrator to check your answers!
In summary, this is a genuinely enjoyable book for problem solvers. Don't be scared by the other reviews. They are actually correct, in a way, but are simply coming from a somewhat narrowed perspective.
Great Book!.......2006-01-08
I don't know why so many people dislike this book...I probably learn in a different manner than they do. I've had to learn most of my calculus through Stewart's Early Transcendentals book, which I found very dry and mostly uninteresting. Luckily, I bought this book while I was taking a year off and taught myself calculus, having never even heard of a limit or a derivative before.
If you like thinking about the ideas behind things, and then learning about the formalism and mathematics of it, then this book is for you. If you prefer proofs, analysis, and "learn these steps and solve these problems" examples, you'll probably want to find a different text.
I can remember, though, the JOY of actually deriving things for myself, like how to calculate the volume of a solid rotated about some line or some such nonsense, because I could understand exactly what was needed. That is how I would describe this book: It's not a book about proving theorems and making you memorize a bunch of rules. Instead, it makes you really understand the subject matter, so that you can use the ideas of calculus to solve a variety of problems, even if they're problems you have no idea how to solve when you first read through them!
That is one thing that this book taught me that I found indespensible. You don't have to know how to do something, because you might be able to figure it out yourself instead of having some professor or text book or internet article tell you how to! Perhaps this approach is a little too ambitious, and I'll admit I spent a lot of time going through this text trying to reason things out, but it was time well spent.
So I suppose my advice would be not to buy this book unless you have to (for a course), or you're really willing to go through those problems spending a lot of time thinking about how to apply the IDEAS presented in the examples and text to the problem at hand. In the latter case, I think you'll find that the time you invest in this book will give you unexpected rewards.
THE ABSOLUTE WORST!.......2005-07-04
This is the worst calculus book out there.
One reviewer says "This book is for good students." I disagree. I am a good student at a tough university and I hated this book. Out of 35 students who took my calc class only 2 got an A. I was one of the two. So you can take my word because I worked my ass off to get that A. THIS IS THE WORST BOOK ON THE MARKET. Why?
1. Not enough examples
2. The examples are either super easy or super hard
3. Poorly explained concepts
4. Questions on things hardly explained
5. Tons of ambiguous questions
6. Poorly designed text
I could go on and on... Just skip this book. Please. It will make me feel better.
Total Dissapointment.......2004-10-29
I am using this text to teach myself Calculus. Explanations are skimpy, and offer very few practice problems with each of the steps worked out. Only odd answers are printed in the back (and some odd answers are not printed). I'm using the Schaum's OutLine Series, and it's MUCH MUCH better. I bought this book used, and for what I paid for it, I could have gotten the Schaums Calculus and Pre-Cal, and still had enough left over for dinner and a movie. Sad.
Awful.......2004-07-20
Ok this textbook does not teach at all. It basically just provide examples that is it. IT doesn't say why you do it or explain the calculus at all. The way the book explain calculus does not help at all when it comes to doing the problems. The answers in the back of the book does not match the problems throughout the chapters.
As an undergrad, this book is not student friendly at all. I basically did not use the textbook and depended on the professor and math tutoring. I love math and I understand it, but this book does not help. I am unable to learn from this textbook.
