Book Description

Tug McGraw's "Ya Gotta Believe!" was the rallying cry of the 1973 New York Mets. But it was also the rallying cry of the screwy left-handed relief pitcher who made millions of fans believe in the impossible, especially when-as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies-he struck out Kansas City's Willie Wilson to win the 1980 World Series. Here is the story of a man who rose to fame, fell from grace, battled cancer, and became a champion not just in baseball, but in life.

5 out of 5 stars Become a believer and then hooked on the book.......2007-09-12

I grew up a Met fan in the 70's but his career in NY was a bit vague to me. I knew him better down the pike in Philly while unfortunately having to root against him. I learned so much about him while turning every page and he made me laugh and later brought me close to tears. The book was splended and showed many of his peaks and valleys, reminded me and informed me of his baseball career. Its often said that "this (one) is unique," but Tug truly was one-of-a-kind and apparently a joy to many. The adversity he experienced was wide-spread and unfortunately it may've trickled down to his children, specifically the now renown, Tim McGraw. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone, especially those that knew him during his sports career; the final 100 pages were riveting as you get a front row seat at his final months riding a bad roller-coaster.

5 out of 5 stars I will always Believe.......2006-07-03

First off I will admit to no small amount of prejucice when it comes to this book. I have been a Phillies fan since the 1970's and was a huge fan of Tug Mc Graw's growing up. In saying this perhaps this book had a deeper effect on me than the average person as I was aware of a lot of the events that Tug relates in this narrative of his life. What I was not aware of was his incredible courage while he was fighting this illness and the amazing warmth and generosity of his son, C&W star Tim Mc Graw. I feel you have to have grown up as part of Tug's generation to understand his motivations and behaviors. I am not saying that excuses the mistakes he made but it did help me to understand the WHY of what he did. In addition it made me appreciate all the more the courage it took him to admit those mistakes and the effort he put forth trying to correct them. This is an extremely moving and emotional tale with tremendous highs and lows and should effect everyone who reads it. Also this is an incredibly honest insight into the psyche of professional athletes in the 70's and 80's. Highly recommended for its' passion and honesty.

5 out of 5 stars Explains the life of a baseball player in the 70's.......2005-12-07

Tug McGraw has had a shameful life story that not many people have known about. He had done some very bad things like neglecting his son, country singer Tim McGraw, because he refused to believe that he was his son. When he was dying he forgave everybody and was nice to all of his relatives, and admitted to all of the wrong things he did. He really showed that he was sorry for everything and he would have changed a lot if he could.

I was truly impressed by how he handled everything when he was dying. He is definitely an amazing man, in more than one way.

He had many family-related problems that he got through. He was a little crazy too, but a motivational speaker really got him to the World Series by telling him, "Ya Gotta Believe!"

5 out of 5 stars A crazy and honest ride.......2005-05-19

Tug McGraw was a bonafide original. From his thigh slap to his screwball to his love of a good time, Tug did things his way. But as he says during the book, sometimes his way was the selfish way. The most compelling part of the book for me was him discussing his relationship with his son Tim. From refusing to acknowledge his fatherhood to completely ignoring him (other than one visit in Houston) to finally coming around and taking responsibilty for himself and his son.

That's a main theme in this book, taking responsibility. Unlike his ex-teammate Pete Rose who seemingly blamed everyone under the sun for his problems other than himself, Tug steps up and admits his mistakes. He says that he was not a good husband or father. He was determined not to make the same mistakes with his youngest son Matthew. His children all rallied around him as he battled brain cancer.

Sadly this story doesn't have a happy ending as Tug passes away in January of 2004, a month before this book was released. The final chapter of this book is very touching as Don Yaeger describes Tug's final days. This book shows that it's never too late to say you're sorry and it's never too late to make things right. An excellent book, highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2004-11-03

Wow! I'm not a baseball fan, or a Tug McGraw fan for that matter, but I read this book in a day. I love, love, love Tug's son Tim McGraw and it was amazing to read how Tug treated his children, Tim especially and they way Tim loved Tug so unconditionally-even paying for his medical bills, rent, furnishing a home for his father and spending hours on end just holding Tug's hand in Tug's final days. It makes me an even bigger fan of Tims. Tug's own childhood/family life was heartbreaking to read about, as well. The baseball parts were interesting, but not very exciting for me, as I am not a big fan of the sport, but baseball fans will definitely enjoy this book.
There are some great pictures in the book also.

Book Description

When Peter DeLeo set out one Sunday morning on a sightseeing and photography trip over the central Sierra Nevada mountains in California, he had no idea that he would soon be fighting for his life with the odds stacked very much against him. DeLeo's single-engine plane encountered turbulence, and he and his two passengers crashed in the mountains. All three survived the accident but sustained multiple injuries. DeLeo had broken ribs, a shattered ankle, and a badly damaged shoulder. After assessing their situation, they decided that the passengers should remain with the plane while DeLeo would hike out to bring back help. It was already winter; he left the limited emergency supplies with the plane's passengers; and he was hampered by his injuries, but DeLeo was determined to get help. He found or improvised shelter at night, carefully warmed himself during the daytime, drank from small pools of melted snow and ice, and slowly but steadily made his way toward civilization. Suffering from exhaustion and on the verge of collapse, he found a hot spring that provided him with temporary warmth and insects to eat. Injuries, dehydration, malnutrition, and a two-day blizzard slowed him, and a rockslide nearly killed him just as he glimpsed the valley and highway that he so desperately sought, but DeLeo's courage saw him through.

Meanwhile, Civil Air Patrol planes searched fruitlessly for the lost plane and for survivors; twice, DeLeo frantically tried to signal the search planes, but to no avail. When DeLeo finally reached a highway, he found it almost impossible to convince the authorities that he was the lost pilot who had been all but given up for dead. His astonishing survival, one of the most remarkable feats of endurance on record, made national and even international news.

Now, for the first time, Peter DeLeo tells his remarkable story in gripping detail. His amazing saga is destined to become a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Honest, Accurate, Riviting.......2007-10-22

Having extensively visited this area (also participating in US Forest Service planning efforts and Congressional Wilderness proposals) this part of the Sequoia/Inyo National Forest(s) since about 1969, I have a keen knowledge of this area.

Several months after the author's adventure, I had an opportunity to speak with him at length about the same - due in large part to being a customer of Hypersoft. The motorcycle his brother rode in an effort to access Sherman peak was purchased and maintained at our dealership.

Still broken and battered from this adventure, Peter spoke with me for nearly three hours in the parking lot of our dealership and I heard this fascinating account - first hand. As Pete spoke, I clearly understood where he was during most of his hike out of the mountains. I found myself captivated as to what was being said.

This was LONG before the book even thought about being written.

I purchased this book a couple of weeks ago and closely compared what I recall of his personal account with me in the parking lot, what was told to me from US Forest Service personnel, from both folks I know at both Jordan Hot Springs and the Olivias cow camp (where Pete spent the night in the outhouse) and the this book.

Without a doubt, the book is right on and accurate.

I cannot recommend this book enough for those who wish a true story of human courage and survival.

Well written and worth every penny.

2 out of 5 stars be better if it was true.......2007-10-09

I am a pilot and this story was great until I really started to think about it. First off, the crash didn't sound very likely. Turns out it did NOT happen that way at all.
Then after the crash some things just didn't add up. The pilot, with 16 broken bones and NO FOOD, does a 2 week long hike in the middle of winter over terrain and in weather that would likely kill most people in good health that did have adequate supplies. He repeatedly does things that sound beyond impossible for someone with so many injuries and starved as well.
Why did he take off on this hike and leave an UNINJURED man behind? Wouldn't it have made more sense for the guy with no injuries to be the hiker? Why didn't they have adequate supplies for flying in this kind of remote terrain. A handheld radio would have had them out in a day or two. Two close enocunters with aircraft are described where it sounds like the pilot could almost have hit them with a stick and no one saw him with a red coat against white snow? The "rescue mission" by his brother riding a motorcycle on closed icy mountain roads sounds stupendously idiotic. Why not take a Jeep? This guy was very lucky not to be SAR mission #2 himself. Then at the end of the story he finally gets to a hospital with 16 broken bones and nearly dead from starvation and they put a cast on his ankle and SEND HIM HOME? Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, as the saying goes.

It's nice to see that other readers of this book share my skepticism of the story. I was first struck by his strange obsession with crash landing a plane in the mountains. In fact, he seems to have chosen this type of plane (a Maule) specifically because it could fly low and slow, giving the pilot a greater chance for a controlled crash landing. When in the air with his friends, he mentioned that he would often look for small patches of land in the mountains in which to crash land the plane. Honestly, I think he wanted to crash and be a hero- his "friends" be damned. The best chance for his and Wave's survival would obviously have been to first wait a few days near the wreckage (especially if the EPIRB was working as he implied). Then, the obvious choice would have been to have Wave try to hike out and bring back help, or to take Wave along with him. Frankly, had he taken his FAR less injured friend with him, they would probably both be alive today. I dont for one minute believe he ran into any black bear or mountain lion because his descriptions of the encounters were totally over the top. I dont believe he slid over any cliff and wound up hanging by a forearm. I dont believe he climbed any trees and I dont believe he found "donuts" of bear scat and used them to insulate his fort or to use as a "pillow". Total nonsense. A total jerk that, rather than thank his sister and girlfriend for their TLC, scolded them by saying "Dont touch me, if you touch me you will hurt me".

1 out of 5 stars survival fairy tale.......2006-06-30

other reviewers have pointed out that the author of this book lied about the reason for the crash and provided government website links to prove it. i am not a pilot, but i have to bring up other points that just do not make sense. keep in mind, the author tries to portray himself as having some knowledge of survival and even states that his friends described him as a survivalist.
shortly after crashing the author decides that their only chance to be rescued is if someone sets off on foot to look for help. one passenger is trapped in the plane. one has, according to the author, one bruise on his forhead. peter, the author, has seven broken ribs, a shatterd left ankle, a broken shoulder and this is how his friend describes his head: "...your eyelid is torn, and your face and head are starting to swell real bad. you've got cuts and gashes on your face and head, too." he also says he no longer has the full use of his fingers or hands. the obvious question is, why was peter the one to set off on foot? the author never gives us any insight as to the decision making process.
the author tells us what supplies they had: 2 large camping tarps, 20 feet of rope, 3 flares, a lighter, a knife, 2 flashlights, assorted tools, a loaf of fruit bread, a jug of water, a jug of juice, and a couple of apples. feeling that their survival may depend on him succeeding, the author chooses...nothing!
during his trek through the wilderness he encounters a black bear, which he says average 300 to 400 pounds. i almost laughed when he said he could feel the ground tremble when the bear took a step! we have a lot of people in this country that weigh that much, and the ground never trembles when they walk past! i am sure anyone that has been to the circus and gotten close to elephants that are walking will tell you that something as small as a black bear will not make the ground tremble! but, i guess peter's goal was to tell an exciting tale, not an accurate one.
after being rescued, and suffering the pain of all those broken bones along with fingers and toes that are black from frostbite, the author decides to go home for a night or so and get some good reast before going to a hospital for treatment. is this supposed to convince us how tough he is, or how stupid?
other reviewers have already pointed out that his passengers did not survive, so i need to touch on this point. the one passenger that was not trapped in the plane had plenty of supplies to make shelter with, to make fire with, and enough food to have survived on, yet he died due to exposure to the elements.
there are many things in this book that simply do not make sense, and the author makes no attempt to explain any of it.
is the book at least exciting to read? from a fictional standpoint, maybe. but if you have ever read real survival stories, or if you have some common sense, the complete lack of believability will keep you from enjoying this.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!.......2006-05-22

The fact that Peter Deleo survived the 1994 small plane crash in the Sierra Nevadas is incredible enough, but to struggle day by day, walking toward what you hope is civilization despite painful injuries is mind boggling! Through a series of intelligent decisions, determination and perhaps a bit of luck, one man's journey through a wilderness in winter in an attempt to bring back help to his two seriously injured companions is an amazing story from start to finish. Told in heart-wrenching detail, this survival story isn't one that just 'limps along'.

Book Description

First published in 1910, Frances C. Carrington’s My Army Life and the Fort Phil Kearney Massacre recounted the author’s adventures as an army wife on the Great Plains, but also sought to set the record straight on her second husband’s involvement in the Fetterman fight.

Frances traveled with her first husband, Lt. George Washington Grummond, to Fort Phil Kearney in Wyoming in 1866 where he was killed in the Fetterman incident just a few months later. She eventually married the post commander, Col. Henry B. Carrington, after the death of his first wife, Margaret, who had befriended and cared for Frances during her brief, tragic episode at the frontier post.

Frances’s narrative recalls the wonder and worries of a naive young bride during the fateful days of 1866. From her voyage to Wyoming to her encounters with unfamiliar peoples and strange landscapes, Frances’s vivid prose examines not only the everyday workings of a frontier army post but also the political and social intrigue behind one of the most controversial military defeats in Western history.

4 out of 5 stars Significant of Early Wyoming.......2006-10-30

The 1860's were turbulent years throughout the west and the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming were no exception. Francis Carrington's reminisces of these times are essential to understanding not only army life on the frontier, but also the true facts of the horrid Fetterman Massacre of 1866.
Venturing west as a young bride to Lt. George Grummond, she describes in detail the landscapes, people and day to day existence of trail life while on their way to establish Ft. Phil Kearney on the eastern flank of the Big Horn Mountains. The fort's purpose was to protect emigrants traveling to the gold fields of Montana.
With the land initially promised to the Sioux in treaty, the government's newer policies of allowing a road and forts to be built through this region fueled acts of violence from the Sioux.
Frances' husband Lt. Grummond, along with Lt. Colonel William Fetterman and a total of eighty-one men were led into ambush by the Sioux in December 1866 and all killed. The post commander, Colonel Henry Carrington, gave explicit orders which were disobeyed resulting in the slaughter of these men.
An informative and expressive read which also upholds Colonel Carrington's command.

Book Description

This is one woman's true story of a seemingly endless struggle to find the will to go on after learning she's been infected with the HIV virus by her son's father. It is also about her battle with an emotional break down and the efforts to understand and overcome traumatic events of her entire life, as well as conquering a recurring drug addiction. She also describes the ostracization and isolation she had to deal with on an ongoing basis.

It is about finding the personal determination not to return to prison. Most important is her struggle to reunite with her children after being seperated for three years and deal with their emotional upheaval and molestation issues. She describes her fervent desire to raise biracial children to be well adjusted adults in a society that tends to be bigoted and unforgiving.

While this book requires grammatical and typographical editing, the author, Laura Waters, uses a style that most people who have lived that lifestyle can relate to. Ms. Waters' determination to break the vicious cycle of addiction, incarceration and violence, while living with HIV and HCV shows incredible strength. We all need testimonies of courage to help empower us. I plan on sharing my copy of the book with young ladies incarcerated in the local juvenile hall.

Excellent first person telling of a difficult life. I couldn't put the book down until I had finished it. I felt like I was sitting there listening to her speak in person. I especially liked the portion that "Toni" wrote. I am recommending this book to all of my Physician associates who have HIV positive patients! In addition.. those Typos, the mispelled words etc that were mentioned by another reviewer only served to enhance the book for me! This was the REAL world and this book was REAL!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-03-15

The authenticity with which the author writes is amazing. She visits every detail and makes the reader really understand where her life has taken her and how she has managed to keep it all together. Awesome!!

2 out of 5 stars Ouch, my head still hurts!!.......2001-02-28

What?? I don't really understand how the editors could send out a book with that many grammar and spelling mistakes. A book that should have taken me an hour to read, took 2 days of reading and re-reading, to be sure I understood it. Lot's of flashbacks that made my head spin. I think the author poured out her heart and soul without the direction of her editors or maybe they were just asleep! All in all, a very sad story about this womans fight for life.

1 out of 5 stars In Praise of Economic Illiteracy.......2003-12-13

In voluntary economic transactions one person's gain is always another's loss. That is the lesson of Maude Barlow. It's a compelling argument until you think about a bit. If a foreign company sells goods in Canada at a price lower than that of Canada firms, Barlow would have you believe that all Canadians are worse off. After all, the competition is destroying Canadian jobs. However, while there may be job losses, all Canadian benefit from the lower prices of the imports, allowing us to purchase more goods.

Would the world be better off if the government required all buildings to board up all their windows? After all, the sun "unfairly" competes with the producers of lightbulbs and candles, thus requiring all windows to be boarded up would stimulate these industries. Within Barlow's, and others, such as Linda McQuiag, this is a logical premise. Go read Frederic Bastiat before reading Barlow's book, in simple language he shatters all of her arguments.

5 out of 5 stars Did we read the same book?.......2003-12-07

While other reviewers are certainly entitled to engage in ad hominem attacks, I think they are ridiculous and counterproductive.

This book is very engaging and stimulating. Ms. Barlow expresses complex ideas with ease. She conveys her passions rather convincingly! No easy matter when most people don't have a clue about trade issues, or the collective relinquishment of national sovereignty to all-powerful WTO bureaucrats! Please read this book, and decide for yourself! Don't listen to reviewers with an ax to grind!

1 out of 5 stars It was a fight to finish this book.......2001-05-14

Maude Barlow does not like free trade. Why she has written so many books about hating free trade, and by extension freedom to associate and contract with other people, is a mystery. If she could state just what is so bad about free markets perhaps some meaningful dialogue could take place. Barlow main point is that it is bad if people who run corporations make money, but it is okay is labors make money. What does she favor one group of workers over the other? Well, firstly she does not consider managers to be doing any type of meaningful work, yet she gives no reason for why she believes this. Secondly, like the previous review her dislike of foriegn corporations borders on xenophobia, Barlow knows this and actually states that she is not xenophobic, but making such statement is meaningless given the position she has staked out.

1 out of 5 stars Running on Empty.......1999-08-16

For over 200 pages Barlow repeats every single argument against free trade that she has stated in all of her other works. The difference this time is that she's decided to call it an autobiography.

If you've read any of her past work, Parcel of Rogues or Class Warfare, there is no need to read this book. She trots out her tired old arguments: corporations are bad, markets are bad, foreign ownership is bad. At one point she states that her nationalism is not xenophobic despite the fact that she constantly rails against foriegn ownership: foriegner ownership is bad because the owners are not your own nationality and therefore cannot be trusted, if this isn't xenophobic and potentially racist I don't know what is.

Another odd characteristice of the book is that any proponent of free markets is presented as fools, but any of Barlow formers colleagues who turned their back on her causes are pretty much forgiven.

National Socialists like Barlow should learn some economics and history before they write drivel like this and contribute to deforestation.

          Book Description

The Cage is a ring enclosed by a steel box where participants are urged to fight to the death - an illegal sport that attracts some of the world's richest and most powerful people as its shadowy patrons. This is the true story of the star of this deadly sport. In this compelling account of his fight for survival, "X" tells of his twelve-year career in The Cage. Transported to fights like some medieval warlord, he was drugged by opponents against his will and almost murdered by a gang intent on preventing him taking on another fighter, because of his reputation as the most deadly opponent in the world. "X" breaks the sport's strict code of silence to tell, with Wensley Clarkson's help, how he started life on the mean streets, and was led into petty crime then - just months before his 16th birthday - recruited to become the star of this most deadly of sports.
