This book of reflections and advice by John Wooden is a favorite of my husband's, mine and our teen aged son. We purchased several copies to give as gifts to coaches in our soccer league. The principles in this book can be applied to ALL areas of life. The Leadership Pyramid is a very powerful tool.

He is a inspiration to us all and his values are much needed in today's world where we have seen scandals in almost every sport. Excellent Book for both young and adults.......2007-01-04
I first heard of this book from a trainer in Mexico. It did not take me more than 30 minutes into reading to understand how valuable this book is towards self-development. It is easy to read and it's very convincing how each element in his building blocks have a directly impact on our lives. I use it to train adults and children with a slightly different approach but always giving credit to John Wooden and his book.
For those who are Christians, there is a segment at the end of each block with verses from the Bible for them to meditate on. I, personally, find it very useful. For those who are not Christians, they can simply ignore it as every element towards achieving success has a very logical rationale to it and it's spiritual beliefs is largely similar in other religions.
It's an excellent way to keep ourselves on track in everything that we do.

John Wooden is a certified legend, not only in basketball but in life. He has deliverd more positive role models than anyone. This book is outstanding and a must read, I have given this book to some of the most successful people I know and they are as impressed as I am. What would you expect from Jay Carty? He is a Christian who writes from the Bible to spread the Gospel of Jesus; therefore, this is another wonderful devotional. Jay has done an excellent job with Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Sucess. Also, knowing Coach Wooden's faith it would be obvious that this would be a Christian must-read. Don't miss this one.

Loved the previous collaboration of Coach Wooden and Jay Carty (One on One), so had to pick this one up also. Have already selected it for our weekly Men's Bible Study and also for my Baseball Chapel group to read and discuss during our weekly meetings in addition to our Sunday Chapel sessions. Coach Wooden and Jay make a great team as Coach Wooden brings a common sense, no nonsense approach that any person, no matter what their beliefs might be, can relate to, while Jay adds relevant scripture references and spiritual insights-a successful combination!

There can be no better compliment to a book than the fact that after reading A Season of Life I immediately ordered three more copies for my own kids. I was fortunate to have a coach with his priorities in the right place, and twenty-five years later he remains the benchmark for how I evaluate coaches. This book is a great testament that you can do things the right way, and be successful. It would be an excellent gift for any graduate that will be working with youth.

I would heartily recommend this book to any parent who has kids involved in youth sports. This is not a book on how to become a coach who wins games. Instead, this is a book that shows how to mold and develop kids who are winners in the game of life.
The Gilman football program wins plenty of games. In this book, Jeffrey Marx highlights the coach and former all-pro NFL footballer Joe Ehrmann. As a coach, he finds it more valuable to teach life lessons to his young charges than football lessons. Of course, they do a lot of good football teaching too. And, the coaches know the game very well.
The book was written after the 2001 season. The coaches at the time felt that Victor Abiamiri was the player most likely to end up in the NFL. In fact, he is now a rookie on the Philadephia Eagles. I have no idea if any other Gilman players have made the NFL. How many kids on any high school team ever make the NFL? Not many. Victor Abiamiri may be the only NFL player of the bunch. However, I am confident that the all or most of the Gilman kids will become good productive members of society.
Of course that is the end result. I recommend you read the story and learn why.

Most moving book I have ever read!.......2007-06-21
As a few others have stated here, I became interested in Coach Ehrmann after watching the documentary by Steve Sabol of NFL Films.
I was very moved seeing how the coaches of the Gilman HS Football team were able to get their message through to the kids. A lot of what they "preach" might be over some kids heads, but they way that they teach life's lessons by using football as the avenue was both brilliant and inspiring.
This past Little League season, I tried my best to emulate what both Ehrmann and the head coach did for their boys, by talking to them, and emphasizing time and time again that I wanted them all to have the greatest time of their lives out there on the field and to never worry about or ask me what the score was. I also made sure that even the weakest players were put in "positions to succeed", rather than worry about putting them in harms way by putting them somewhere where they might "fail". And as scripted in a movie, the most rewarding experience for everyone was when these less naturally talented kids actually made a play for us or got a big hit! The ENTIRE TEAM was overjoyed and started patting them on the head! Nothing could be more motiviating for them...or...for me than actually seeing it come to fruition!
If you DO coach kids, or were ever considering it, you owe it to yourself to look upon it as the vocation that it is...in the way Coach Ehrmann does. You'll be surprised how much of an effect you can have on a kid's life, and how much watching these kids develop together can have an effect on YOUR life. Our record was actually 4-6 this season (and nobody on the team knew), yet it was, by far, our most successful and rewarding season!

Aloha,
For about 22 years I am a practitioner of the updated Ho'oponopono-process from Morrnah Simeona, who brings balance and joy in my daily life. So I feel free, to comment this book called Zero Limits.
I do not care that it is a promotion book for activities of the authors. But I care for the legacy of Morrnah. In that view the book does not reflect her genuine teachings, it is mixed up with other ideas, therefore creating a different system - but is referring to Morrnah.
Doing her Ho'oponopono is primarily not what is promised on the cover. Wealth can be a comfortable side-effect. The process is for releasing negative energies out of your mind and the mind of others involved at a given problem. The result is a blessing from the Divine Creator for all involved parties - but which kind is His choice. And Yes, the Way of Morrnah leads step by step to Peace and FREEDOM for you and your family and relatives, for your neighbors and your circle of acquaintances. May be even the landscape around you will have less traffic, more flowers and so on. You and those you are associated with will be on the track of evolution again. But one thing will not happen: It will not lead to Zero. The Divine is not Zero, the Divine is LIFE itself.
To say e.g. to the Unihipili "I love you, I am sorry, please forgive me, thank you" are not key phrases of the Ho'oponopono - even they are written on many pages of the book. They work for sure, as you profit from the huge thought forms of LOVE, FORGIVENESS or THANKS. Unihipili - your subconsciousness - is then in a well-feeling vibration, pretending your problems are erased. But not so. Your mind is simply manipulated. These words are a kind of murmuring a mantra, of singing a catchy record. With temporarily effect. Morrnah never taught this sequence. Her way was writing down the problems ... and doing the Ho'oponopono-process. There the words of Love, Forgiveness and so on are used in the context of the whole process - the deciding difference, beside the final erasing.
The proposal that the Divine is a Zero state (page 31) is neither the ancient way of Ho'oponopono nor the modern way of Morrnah. It seems to be the new way of Dr. Stanley Hew Len, based on a misunderstanding of the Void. Void exists as an emptiness of any matter, as an Ultraconsciousness beyond all consciousness as Man can be aware of - but it is anything else than Zero. It is - as Morrnah would say - the undefinable Pure. When doing her Ho'oponopono, Divinity will simply cleanse your Unihipili from all (emotional) rubbish what is not you, but it will let untouched this part of your Self-Identity, your ability of having feelings.
It is no surprise for me that the two authors attracted each other: One calls himself "Mr.Fire", the other one is otherwise known as "Haleakala" (House of the Sun). Since some years he changed to "Ihaleakala" (Divine House of the Sun). He is not a master teacher. A master teacher is not working with material labels, magic business cards and the like (page119). They surely will bring results, but not cleansing. They will become binding fetishes, created out of fear. If s.o. feels free of doing a Mahiki, these labels will be worthless within the twinkle of an eye - all of them.
"I've been told to kill the Divine to be home" (page 172). Did I hear the falling down of a mask from Stan? Will all come out as a Judas-story? In an interview in April 1985 (The Movement Newspaper, L.A., CA), Morrnah said: "By loving ourselves, we are loving the Divine". Consequently if killing the Divine, we kill ourselves. This message helps nobody. Morrnah opened the door for a new partnership between Divinity and Man, Stan seems intending to close this door.
Stan claimed having healed criminals in the Hawaii State Hospital only by looking through the files while murmuring the above sequence "I love you, etc." (page 41). THAT WAS NOT SO. He did the Way of Morrnah: Ho'oponopono-processes, the long form. And yes, for more than three years it was him who started humbly the process of expressing repentance to the criminals and their doctors, asking them for forgiveness, forgiving them and asking Divinity for healing all who are involved. Divinity accepted this altruistic plea and transformed step by step all negative memories and karmic bondages inside him AND inside the others into Light - as it was no accident, that Stan worked in this special hospital from 1983-1987. He was not responsable for these folks, he was the cause.
It might be attractive to get an honorable name from a kind of Guru (page 57/58), but it will not only lead to a longlasting bondage, it will also split your personality. Everybody's choice.
Every moment there are new problems under the sky as you are creating karma, which means: What you do to others (by living up your free will), you will experience on yourself. If you create problems, you will experience problems. You are the cause. Surely from that moment on you KNOW that you are the creator of your life, you are responsable for your future thoughts, words and deeds. You are responsable for the welfare of your Unihipili. But Morrnah never said as written in the book, that you are "100% responsable" of what you did in the past (page 41), because this is both binding and not true. Often others, unknown to you, are also involved. Furthermore it is giving you a feeling of guilt in the neighborhood of the original sin.
If a dog is barking to you, let it bark. It is its way to talk with you. It is its way of feeling LIFE. If it disturbs you, do not stop it by having magic ideas in your mind as proposed in the book (page 153). Again Morrnah would say just cleanse, that and why you are not comfortable with its barking.
You should not try to cleanse the 50 millions, who voted in your mind for the "wrong" president, as proposed in the book (page 168). May be you take over their Karma. Ask for cleansing why you are angry about their vote; Divinity will decide - that is it, what Morrnah would tell you. You are the cause if you are angry.

There is no information about real Ho'o Ponopono in this book. There is an advertisement telling you to pay for a seminar to learn what Joe Vitale thinks is Ho'o Ponopono. The sales pitch contains hints which show this is not real Ho'o Ponopono. Joe Vitale also publishes in this book the claim that he is "the Jesus of Business" which all Christians will find disgusting and offensive.

I call this " a new way of Living", and what I mean by that is it is a way to heal myself , and all those I perceive as needing healing, which is really me!! What a concept!! At times I really get it, and other times it is a little harder. Surely "that person over there" has nothing to do with me. Even so, it is an awesome practice, and one I will continue to do.

Having read several of Jay Carty's books now I have to say he is an incredibly inspiring writer and person to say the least. I am so excited each month as I check for new "stuff" from Jay Carty as it is always refreshing and different yet always connected to God with a three stranded cord. If you haven't been a reader of his books for long there are many to choose from and this writer never stops searching for Gods will in his daily efforts to continue to provide hearty reading material for all groups and all stages from salvation, and growth to a mature level of one's spiritual walk. I highly recommend anything he puts his hands on because I know the hand of God is on him. John Wooden has figured out some of the secrets of life. And he passes them on directly, in a way that can be transformational for a reader.
John Wooden is a hero of mine. His own heroes include Abraham Lincoln and Mother Theresa. Like them, he is a treasure for all of us because his life and lessons demonstrate what it means to live to "our personal best" in a way that is simple, profound and so clear.
This book should be required reading in "Human Being 101".

We grow up hearing about the importance of developing " good character", not always knowing what it is, or just how to obtain it. All of Wooden's books give his personal guidelines for developing character and living a decent life, whether we are athletes, musicians, teachers, or anything else.
Wooden's teachings have stood the test of time. His life and those he has influenced are proof of that.
I use his wisdom for myself, and I pass it on to all my students. They all know who John Wooden is. His life blesses us all.

John Wooden is one of my heroes. When I was growing up, his teams were dominant, but more importantly, they made the game beautiful to watch. After he retired at the peak of his game, he quietly stepped off the stage. With the rush of books on leadership in the 1990's through the present, it was inevitable, and overdue, that folks take time to examine Coach Wooden's approach to leadership. This has led to a cottage industry in Wooden books.
This book is short, personal and focuses on life lessons learned from the narrative of Coach's life. It doesn't attempt to be weighty, just a good read, that imparts wisdom without hitting you over the head with it. It touches on each chapter of Coach Wooden's life, and particularly shows the infuence of his father, his high school and college coaches and his growth thru experience
This is a fun, easy read that leaves the reader wiser. Highly recommend

This is a great book to help any coach of any sport get a good feel for the right way to coach young players. Teach them good life lessons and skills. It gives an insight into a great coach and even greater man.

He has to turn a group of talented individuals into a smoothly running team, and he has to produce results that please the fans of his team--the shareholders of the athletic program. Thus, in Leading with the Heart, Krzyzewski reviews the lessons he's learned as basketball coach at Duke University, and tries to universalize them so they translate to any leadership position. For example, he writes, "Adjustments are not unusual, they are usual. So a leader's ability to think on his feet ... to do things without instruction ... is of paramount importance." Makes sense, as does this admonition: "When teaching, always remember this simple phrase: 'You hear, you forget. You see, you remember. You do, you understand.'"
The book has four sections--"Preseason," "Regular Season," "Postseason," and "All-Season"--and each of those has four chapters. Each chapter begins with three quotes ("Too many rules get in the way of leadership" leads off chapter 1), and ends with bulleted tips summing up the chapter's message. Between the quotes and the bullet points are anecdotes about Duke basketball games and (occasionally) Krzyzewski's life outside basketball. What you come away with is an understanding of why Krzyzewski is a great basketball coach, why former Duke assistants such as Tommy Amaker and Quin Snyder are probably going to become great basketball coaches, and how anyone who's currently a coach can become a better coach. It would be great if other types of managers in other types of businesses could incorporate these lessons in compassionate, focused, highly flexible leadership, but it seems unlikely. Most managers in business rise through the ranks not because of their ability to lead or inspire but because of their knowledge and competence (if not their connections). On the other hand, it would be nice if each of us, just once, could work for someone like Coach K, someone who could push the right buttons and lead us to our own version of the Final Four. I read coach K's book when it first came out and recently re-read it. I often refer to it when I need to put things in the correct perspective. This inspirational book makes it easy to "take responsibility for yourself, and never let "it's not my job," enter into your mind. Coach "K" exemplifies "getting the job done/taking charge." Many a time I'm wondering what to do in tough situations, both in sports and business. I truly ask myself a lot: "What would a guy like coach Krzyzewski do?" I can't think of any coach who exemplifies more decency, integrity, honesty, perseverence, dedication, fairness, family values...you get the point. It appears there are many who admire him and, some will envy him. I say learn from him because he's proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, what leading with integrity and values is all about. Many, many, parent's say they want their kids to go to Duke. Why? These parents are specific to say that they hope their children can be part of the positive and integral influnce that "coach Krzyzewski brings to Duke." Major companies have used coach "K"s book to help executives get on the right track. You won't read a better book on motivation for anything in life. Amazing book, about an amazing person. Worth it!!!

THE worst book I have read by any coach.......2007-08-23
I am a professional College Coach. I have read Coach K's book and I found it to be the worst book I have ever read. The book repeats itself over and over again. Almost like he doesn't have anything really to say so he filled the book with filler. Nothing in the book made me go wow. Nothing was new to the coaching or leading world. Save your money and get a real book on Leadership.
I do not know one Coach in the NCAA world that has not read this book. And I can say that the majority of people agree with me. The ones that don't are just big Coach K or Duke fans.
I am not a UCLA fan in anyway. But I found that John Wooden's book to be more thoughtful and helpful.
Skip this book and find books on Leadership in the business world. Coach K is a great coach, but he can't write a book. And lets be honest it is not hard to coach the 10 best College players like Duke has. It is harder to coach the 10 worst. And that is what we all are looking to get advice from.

One of the best sports biographies I ever read.......2007-09-20
I couldn't help feeling that I was right there in frozen Green Bay, in the 1960s, at one of the Lombardis' Sunday post-game cocktail parties, and everywhere else Vince Lombardi went in his life, while reading this great book.
It's a great read, very vivid, about a great coach and (as Maraniss illustrates) not the greatest father in the world. In other words, a portrait of a human being who did great things with his work, but who had foibles like everybody else.

I picked up this book after hearing a strong recommendation. I knew next to nothing about Vince Lombardi, other than that he was an excellent football coach. Very glad I bought the book as this was a particularly engrossing biography.
The author was very thorough in his research and traces Lombardi's life in detail for his full nearly 60 years. He provides a lot of detail on Lombardi's strengths and weaknesses. At times I wanted to slug him and tell him to quit being so intense about football and pay more attention to his family. Other times, I found myself admiring the daylights out of him. It is astonishing to think he could take the most losing team in football and turn them into major winners in just one season.
There's a lot of food for thought in this biography. Is winning really so important that you should sacrifice your family and your health? Is success really success if you never enjoy it? As a recovering perfectionist, I saw many powerful examples from Lombardi's life about why I DON'T want to be a perfectionist! Nothing is ever good enough, and you never, ever get to be happy. That is one lesson in Lombardi's life that really comes blasting out of every story.
If you like biographies, you will really enjoy this one. Glad I decided to pick it up.

measure of a man.........2007-04-03
maybe the greatness of a man can be determined by his ability to inspire greatness in other men..by that account Vince Lombardi was a giant..maybe his tactics would not work as well with today's pampered athletes but I'm sure he would still find a way to inspire that's what the great teachers do..they not only teach about they're hired to..they teach about life..some of Lombardi's players to this day attribute their success on and off the field to the coach..I thought I knew so much about coach Lombardi but this book by David Maraniss filled me in on so many things I didn't know..Vince had a brother who was gay but he still went to church every day and never ostrasized his brother, he just figured the church got it wrong on this one..I read this book on a journey to Green Bay to visit Lambeau..I carried with me a picture of my dad shaking hands with Vince..but you don't have to be a Packer fan to enjoy and be inspired by this book..it's simply one of the best biographies I've ever read..even a Viking fan would enjoy it..as one of his ex-players recants..'there's not a day that goes by that I don't miss that man'...
A Man's Man. .......2007-02-20
I read Harvey Mansfield's Manliness last spring, and I have to say that Vince Lombardi embodies all of his criteria for the positive expression of masculinity. Coach Lombardi demonstrated the coveted male virtues of valor, devotion, passion, loyalty, and the need for victory. What's so telling about Maraniss's account is the way in which the narrator reveals to us slowly, but consistently, just how much the man meant to the people around him. A couple of the scenes with Starr and Hornung will choke you up--particularly the letter that Bart's dad sent to Lombardi. When Lombardi went to the Redskins, even though he was only with them for a year, he transformed the players completely. He walked up to the podium with a single ring on and restored their hope. Sonny Jurgensen had never possessed a leader's mentality before meeting Lombardi. In a single year's time, he led the team to a winning season and became a man admired for more than talent alone. For all of us who are devoted fans of the NFL, Coach Lombardi will always be remembered and treasured. I say this despite the fact that I have no use for the Green Bay Packers and have hated them since I was a kid. No matter, a man like this is above partisan loyalty. He's better than all that stuff. He could be gruff, angry, and harsh, but everyone around him (almost unanimously) still loved him because they could sense him love and devotion. He returned their love again and again. Vince Lombardi was a teacher, a coach, a tactician, a strategist, and a man's man, RIP.
