This follow up to The HeartMath Solution and Transforming Anger reveals how becoming aware of the heart's innate intelligence can dramatically reduce stress and tension. Based on over thirty years of research showing that it is possible to shift the heart into a "positive rhythm" that signals the brain, causing both of them to synchronize to more effectively respond to stress. In this book, the authors provide readers with the tools to not only respond to stress more resiliently, but to literally transform stress into positive emotions and creative energy. The keys to doing so are the transformative exercises developed by Childre and his team of researchers at the HeartMath Institute. The scientifically-validated techniques they share are easy to understand, and with regular, committed practice, as evidenced by the many illustrative case histories throughout the text, offer many benefits. Far more than just another book on stress management, Transforming Stress offers readers the means to more consciously create joy and contentment in their lives, while regaining the energy and enthusiasm that are normally sapped by life's daily stresses and tension.--Larry Trivieri Jr.
Book Description
Stress.
It's the quintessential buzz word of modern life. It hangs on everyone's lips from the first miles of the morning commute until the screeching alarm clock starts yet another day. Countless articles and studies tell the same story: lives controlled by unmanaged stress end early and none too well. This book describes a simple, straightforward method readers can learn and practice to literally transform stress by shifting the heart's own rhythms.
At the core of the HeartMath method of emotional regulation is the idea that, by focusing on positive feelings such as appreciation, care, or compassion, anyone can create dramatic changes in his or her heart rhythms. These changes precipitate a series of neural, hormonal, and biochemical events that dissipate stress and anger and lead to greater well-being. The benefits from using this system are remarkable and far-reaching: blood pressure drops, stress hormone levels fall, immune system activity increases, and anti-aging hormone levels rise. Through its interactive learning system, this book teaches readers to use the HeartMath method, enabling them to see and experience in real time how thoughts and emotions affect their heart rhythms. It teaches them how to engage their hearts to bring emotion, body, and mind into balance, and helps them stay in a zone of focused clarity, optimal health, and high performance. Changes brought about through this method are fast-acting and long-lasting-the perfect antidote to our chaotic and fast-paced lives.

Book Description
How Two Grieving Mothers Found Inspiration and Comfort There are few, if any, events in life as traumatic, heart-wrenching, and crushing as the death of a child. While nothing can mute the pain of such a life-shattering loss, others who know this experience can help those suffering articulate the chaos of their feelings and see that they can, eventually, feel whole again. Organized by a journalist and a psychotherapist, each of whom has lost a child, A Broken Heart Still Beats is a remarkable compilation of poetry, fiction, and essays about the pain, stages of grief, and the coping and healing process that follows the death of one's child. The chapters are organized thematically and chronologically, from "Thunderstruck," the point at which parents first learn they have lost a child, to "The Legacy of Loss," wherein the authors and the anthology selections speak to the "steely hard and cold" life lessons this type of bereavement brings. This compilation of poems and excerpts draws from short stories, novels, biographies, and autobiographies that focus on the death of a child as relayed through classic and contemporary world literature. It is made up of works by some of the best writers and thinkers present and past, many of them bereaved parents as well, ranging from Mark Twain, Isabel Allende, William Shakespeare, John Edgar Wideman, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Anne Tyler, and Sophocles to Eric Clapton and Winston Churchill. Biographical introductions personalize the excerpts, often offering new insights into well-known writers like William Faulkner and Rudyard Kipling. This book's anthologized selections make it truly exceptional. This book expresses the universal themes of grief--and the common points of these experiences and feelings--in language and imagery that goes straight to the heart. The fact that each of the authors has lost a child brings a powerful authenticity to the book. Bereaved parents and family members as well as mental health professionals, bereavement counselors, and those interested in grief literature will all find this book extremely valuable. "As one who has experienced the tragic, untimely death of a child, I have found this anthology of similar experiences an excellent source of comfort and healing." --George McGovern, former U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate. "By putting words to what is surely the most unspeakable of life's losses, this eloquent and painfully honest book may help make the darkness a little less dark, the loneliness a little less lonely." --Judith Viorst, author of Necessary Losses Born and raised in new York, Mary Semel graduated from Goucher College in Baltimore. She is a psychotherapist who, after working for many years at Sheppard Pratt Hospital, now has a private practice. Her sixteen-year-old son, Alexander, was killed in a car accident in 1991. Anne McCracken is a former newspaper reporter and feature writer. She lives in Baltimore, Maryland, with her husband,
Customer Reviews:
An excellent grief resource for grieving parents.......2007-09-18
My daughter questioned why I was reading this book, and until she said it I would have not really thought about or understood why I WAS reading it. However, when forced to think about it, I realized that I was probably wondering how other parents were able to survive this crushing loss and by what means they did so. This book provided that window into another's grief and gave me the sense that I was not alone, and that while it was normal to feel the things I was experiencing, others were finding out and giving voice to their own grief. It was this shared experience of understanding another's pain that gave me some relief - to know that I wasn't going crazy!
an amazing anthology.......2006-07-23
When my granddaughter was born still, I immediately turned to the solace offered by the written word, finding that to be much more helpful than the empty cliches and platitudes offered by acquaintances. This is an incredible collection of writing, both fiction and nonfiction, essay and poetry, on the subject of the loss of a child. Many, if not most, of the writers included have experienced this most devastating of all losses. The authors introduce each section with personal writing that forms an intimate connection. They draw from classic literature as well as modern, making this a book that offers something to everyone. I found myself re-reading sections in an attempt to hold off coming to the end of this sustaining book. I doubt this book will ever make it to my bookshelf, as I will be turning to it often for inspiration and comfort.
The one I still read..........2005-09-27
It's been five years since the death of my precious son and although many books were helpful in the early months and years this is the one that has lingered with me the longest. I still turn to it from time to time, especially on the hard days.
If I'm angry, confused, consumed with memories and flashbacks, or just missing my boy this is the book I turn to.
As Mark Twain is quoted in the book, "It is one of the mysteries of our nature that a man, all unprepared, can receive a thunder-stroke like that and live. There is but one reasonable explanation of it. The intellect is stunned by the shock and but gropingly gathers the meaning of the words. The power to realize their full import is mercifully wanting. The mind has a dumb sense of vast loss-that is all. It will take the mind and memory months and possibly years to gather together the details and thus learn and know the whole extent of the loss."
That quote, like so many in the book, resides in my heart and mind. I am still grappling with my loss, but thanks to this book and many others my heart continues to mend.
The most depressing book I have ever read.......2004-08-15
I found this book to be extremely depressing and full of despair, which someone who has lost a child doesn't need to feel more of. This book offered no hope and must have been written by authors who believe they will never see their children again. I refuse to look at life and death that way and instead choose to have hope of reuniting with my daughter and peace in knowing that she is in a much better place than we are. Obviously I would not recommed this book for anyone who has lost a child.
The most helpful book so far..........2004-06-21
I lost my precious daughter Hannah Caguiat last December in an accident that injured me and her little sister Emily as well. Along with an outpouring of love, support, and sympathy from our family and community, I received dozens of books about bereavement in general and loss of a child in particular.
I received _A Broken Heart Still Beats_ as a gift recently and reading it has been so helpful. Despite the variety of experiences and the fact that some of the pieces in here are fiction, this is the first time I have felt like there are people out there who truly would understand what we are going through. It is not a self-help book, but does explore various aspects of being a bereaved parent -- from relationships with spouse/partner/child's other parent, to anger, to sibling issues. I highly recommend this for anyone who has lost a child or is close to someone who has.
I was saddened, too, by how many people out there in the arts and literature have been in this situation. So many that I never knew had experienced this.

A superb first stop for all levels of education.......2007-04-21
Thanks to this book, I beat the metabolic syndrome! This book was refered to me by an endocrinologist. As a nurse and diabetic, Karlene's book is an excellent primer to frist learn about metabolic syndrome.
The book's content is agreat job educating a variety of audiences: for professionals and lay people alike (although some info maybe too advanced from some lay people).
This should be recommended reading to all high school kids. The book not only tells you what you should eat, why, and how it affects you.
My only small complaint is that some of the research she sites for recommending supplements is very debatable and or inconclusive.
Also, even if she -is- a Canadian, I would do her.
If you're looking for up-to-date, excellent information, READ THIS BOOK!.......2006-08-08
What a wealth of information! This is a book you'll read and keep, because you'll want to refer to it again and again. It's worth more than every penny you spend on it!
more conceptual and technical than data oriented.......2006-07-27
The book tends to dwell on insignificant, technical matters. Specific data on specific foods is vague and sketchy. A diet book, to be five star, should provide data for at least two levels of difficulty (i.e. a fast paced diet and a moderately paced diet). For each level, at least 200 or 300 common foods should be rated. Portion sizes should be specified. This book covers all the research but does not provide near enough data on specific foods for someone that is dieting. To top it off, the author has an irritating habit rephrasing just about everything.
EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE.......2006-04-25
THIS BOOK PROVIDES A VERY DETAILED OUTLINE OF WHAT THE METABOLIC SYNDROME IS AND EXACTLY HOW IT WREAKS HAVOC ON YOUR HEALTH, IT HAS A VERY CLEAR SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION ON THE METABOLIC PROCESSES OF INSULIN AND ITS REACTION WITH OTHER HORMONES, BASED PRIMARILY ON WHAT YOU EAT. THE PROGRAM OUTLINES A PLAN OF SUPPLEMENTS, EXERCISE, AND DIET. I HAVE BEEN ON THE PROGRAM A LITTLE OVER A WEEK AND MY BLOOD SUGARS HAVE DROPPED SO MUCH THAT I HAD TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF MEDICATION I WAS TAKING. THE DIET BASICALLY CALLS FOR YOU TO GIVE UP SODA, DESERTS, SUGAR, AND TO FOCUS ON WHOLE GRAINS VEGETABLES AND LEAN PROTEIN AND HEALTHY FATS, THIS INFORMATION AND THE EXCELLENT SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATIONS REALLY HELPED TO MOTIVATE ME TO GIVE IT A TRY.

Where the Broken Heart Still Beats, the story of Cynthia Ann Parker.......2007-10-10
Book arrived quickly and in new condition. Its a good book and easily read by younger readers.
Cynthia Ann Parker has always fascinated me and her life was hard........2007-10-02
This is a wonderful book about the little white girl taken by Indians in central Texas at age 10. She was later married to Indian Chief and bore 3 children. One of her sons was Quanah Parker, famous in his own right.
Don't miss this account of her life. I could not put it down until I had finished reading it.
Historical significance.......2007-09-19
This is an interesting concept on the history of Cynthia Ann Parker, captured as a child and raised by Indians. This work is focused on the history of the episode and Parker's return and foreced residence among a family she barely remembered. Although Parker rarely communicated her history, the author postures the cruelty of her Indian Captors. One must compare how this story contradicts other works such as "Ride the Wind" by Lucia St. Clair Robson. Robson puts forth the opposite opinion and relates how good the Indians were to the children they took and raised.
book review.......2007-05-19
After we read where the broken heart still beats by Carolyn Meyer I could understand why Cynthia Ann wanted to go back with her people. I could also see why Meyer wrote this book.
Cynthia Ann thought she was a Comanche because she was captured by them when she was 9-years-old. Her family captured her 25 years later and took her in to comfort her. She didn't take to her real life that much.
I could see why she wanted to go back to her people. She lived most of her life with the comanches so she doesn't know that much about her old life. She made a family in her other life so she really really wants to go back.
You should read this book if you want an adventure. This book is really interesting and worth it if you want to read it. I recommend this book you people in middle school. Also to people that are older than 13.
Will the broken heart still beat?.......2007-05-19
After we read Where the Broken Heart Still Beats by Carolyn Meyer I could tell why Cynthia Ann wanted to go back with the Comanches. I also see why Meyer wrote this book. It makes you feel like you a really there with her and you feel how she feels. It makes you feel sometimes you wish you go and tell her Uncle just let her go back.
Cynthia Ann thought that that she was part of the Comanche tribe and they are not the ones that captured her. She thought that they were her family and her real family where the ones that captured but they rescued her. She had lived with them so long and thought she was a Comanche. She had a husband and kids there and she wanted to be with them.
I really see why she wanted to go back with the Comanche's. She had her family and wanted to see her son. She also wanted her little daughter, Topsannah, to see how they lived. She talked how they talked and acted like them she needed to be with the Comanche's.
You should read this book if you like books that go back and forth and if you like happy and sad books. I think that if you like biography you would really like this book. In some parts you will feel like you are sitting with Cynthia Ann.

Good overview of HRV written by experts in the field.......1998-11-24
The book presents a balanced summary of HRV technology and clinical applications. It is lacking in the more recent developments of nonlinear and geometric methods of HRV analysis. This new technology is developing at such a rapid pace that it is already out of date in several areas, in particular the newer techniques of analysis including Poincare plot analysis and the clinical applications including post AMI risk stratification as reported in the ATRAMI study.
La Rovere, M.T., Bigger, J.T.,Jr., Marcus, F.I., Mortara, A., Schwartz, P.J., and ATRAMI Investigators Baroreflex sensitivity and heart-rate variability in prediction of total cardiac mortality after myocardial infarction. Lancet 351(9101):478-484, 1998.
HRV technology is now an established method of quantifying cardiac autonomic activity and the authors of this book are to be congratulated in publishing this landmark first edition.
I look forward to the next edition.

Customer Reviews:
E for effort.......2006-01-04
I am agreeing to the comment of "E for effort" on this book.
This book describes the author's attemps to improve his condition and how he suceeded. But he admits in his book that he is not sure which ones actually worked. Plus, the author also takes diabetes medications, along with other medicines and supplements. My main concern is what worked for him probably won't work for someone reading this book.
This book does not really provide a clear picture on what to do. He made so many changes on the medications and supplements, it is hard to say what worked.
One can find the general imformation presented in this book on "Diet", "Exercise" and "Stress management" (relating to clog arteries & heart diseases) through the internet. I didn't gain any new information by reading this book.
The printing of this book is also done in a very strange way.
The text is printed at the center, occupying only the center area with a lot of spaces around, so about half of the page is blank.
Pleasing, but could have been better.......2005-11-28
The author's intentions were quite noble. Still, the writing was rather stiff. I give it an E for effort, but...would I buy a sequel? No way.
From calorie charts to insurance claims.......2002-09-09
Unclog Your Arteries: How I Beat Atherosclerosis is the personal testimony of Gene McDougall, a man who used diet changes, vitamin supplements, prescription medications, basic lifestyle changes, and more to recover after his own clogged arteries nearly killed him in a heart attack. From calorie charts to insurance claims, Unclog Your Arteries is filled with useful forms and advice, and a welcome, highly recommended supplement (though emphatically not a replacement for a doctor's diagnosis and advice) for anyone who needs to improve their heart health and quickly.
Bypass Prevention Made Easy.......2002-03-25
This is an excellent guidebook for those who want to avoid heart bypass surgery. Case in point - page 28 lists the cholesterol component target numbers needed to reverse artery clogging. That page alone is worth the price of the book many times over. I also appreciated how easy the book was to read, understand and put into practice. I was afraid it would be filled with all kinds of incomprehensible medical terms, but it was written in plain, everyday English. There were even blank forms to photocopy and use in keeping my medical records organized. For people who are lazy or easily overwhelmed by a complicated or unpleasant regimen, this book is a dream come true. The author even explains how it's possible to control weight without counting calories.
By skipping over the charts and tables, it took less than 45 minutes to read this book the first time. I say the first time, because I have read it several times. It has turned out to be a great reference source - it even has extra-wide margins for writing notes.
From now on, when the occasion calls for it, I'm giving this book to my friends as a "get well" gift, instead of cards or flowers.
Product Description
People from the Indian subcontinent (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) have some of the world's highest rates of diabetes and heart disease. This is true even when they have low levels of traditional risk factors such as cholesterol. Even non-smoking Indian vegetarians under the age of 40 who exercise regularly may be at high risk.
For the first time, the authors of this groundbreaking, deeply researched book tell you why. They also tell you how you and your family - working with your physician - can prevent, manage and even reverse this dangerous but treatable killer.

Excellent Practical book on Heart disease.......2006-02-17
Post heart attack I bought or borrowed numerous books on heart disease. This book has information that is scattered over many sources and so is a nice addition to the literature on heart disease and would be very valuable to anybody who wants to understand their disease and manage it or try to avoid getting it. It does a good job of explaining the current understanding of heart disease development, and several practical steps one can take to avoid getting the disease or manage it if one has it. While one focus of the book is the much higher than normal incidence of heart disease in South Asians in reality it is an excellent read for just about anybody. It does a very nice job of summarizing a great deal of research and highlights the Indian specific risk factors and appropriate medical responses. Much of the data is backed up by references to the medical literature that one can consult if one so desires (so much of the book is evidence based rather than anecdotal in nature). As an example of the obscure data that is hard to find but is included in the book is a quantification of expected benefit from several lifestyle & theraputic changes likes loosing weight or lowering LDL or quitting smoking etc.
How To Beat The Heart Disease Epidemic among South Asians by Dr. Enas and Sudesh Kannan Phd.......2006-01-13
"How To Beat The Heart Disease Epidemic among South Asians" by Drs. Enas A Enas, MD and Sudesh Kannan, Phd, is very well researched and a very clearly written guide not only for South Asians, but for all of us who want to live a higher quality of life our entire lifetime. This wonderful guide will be a fund of useful knowledge for my wife and I for years to come. Enas and Kannan have delivered a great gift to all of us seeking the latest knowledge on how to live healthy lives with lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol which leads to a healthy heart. If the great knowledge in this book is followed by the readers they will become healthier and happier and remain so throughout thier lives. I have recommended this book to Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN. I highly recommend it to anyone of any race, culture or ethnic group. My compliments to the authors. Colonel Joseph M. Blair III US Army Retired US Masters Swimmer Age 63
A must read for all South Asians.......2005-12-31
Dr. Enas has compiled his enormous knowledge and expertise, based on his extensive clinical background and research on heart disease during last three decades, into a single book. It convinces, even the skeptics, the deeply troubling, at the same time not very well understood problem of the twin epidemics of heart disease and diabetes among the people worldwide and particularly among the South Asian population. It discusses with great clarity as to why South Asians should be tested and treated differently. This excellent book by an very well known cardiologist in the field of heart disease among the South Asians, written in a easily understandable language, is a must read for all South Asians in diaspora as well as in their native land.
How to Beat the Heart Disease Epidemic Among South Asians.......2005-12-12
Very informational book-ideal for medical and non-medical audience. Details on research and the statistics adds to the value of the book. Wish there was a workbook for people to keep a track of their life style changes and the benefits. Loved the recipes and nutritional information. Highly recommend it to South Asians in America and also in their native countries.
The Silent Epidemic.......2005-12-11
This book by Drs' Enas and Kannan is a superb effort at highlighting the silent epidemic affecting south asians. It does yeoman service by drawing attention not only to factors that affect this population but provides information and resources which help laymen and physicians alike understand the disease process. It goes a step further than traditional books by devoting half the volume to educate readers on prevention of heart disease. The format and not just the content makes the book a pleasure to read. Once I picked it up I just had to race through it at one sitting. However, since then I have gone back to the book on numerous occasions only to be impressed by the amount of information that it provides.
This book is a must have for all, physicians and lay people alike, not just those from south asia.

Life is complicated. It is truly the "entangled bank" that Charles Darwin described. But scientists are now discovering that energy is the unifying force that joins all life on Earth. Visionary biologists have advanced a new theory that explains how the natural worldfrom the tiniest amoeba to the greatest rain forestis constructed, providing a fresh perspective on the essential interconnectivity of living systems.
This revolutionary theory explains a variety of phenomena - helping us understand why a shrew eats its bodyweight in food each day, why a mammal's heart beats about 1 billion times in its lifetime, why there are no trees as tall as the Eiffel tower, and why more species live at the Earth's equator than at its poles. By looking at how living things use energy, we can answer these and myriad other intriguing questions. In the Beat of a Heart combines biography, history, science and nature writing to capture the exciting advancesand the people who are making themthat are triggering a revolution as potentially important to biology as Newton's insights were to physics.

Origin of Wealth and health.......2007-04-09
This book is wonderful new application of thermodynamics to biology. And biology finaly start to yield to Scientific enquiry, by which author implies 'written in mathematics'. We now know how all the living things are behaving. This book thus might make a trilogy of life science books; "Origin of Wealth: Evolution, Complexity, and the Radical Remaking of Economics" on the behaviour of other people, by Eric D. Beinhocker and "I am a strange loop" by Doug Hofstadter, on the behaviour of myself(to be released soon).
Does Chemical Energy Explain the Unity of Nature?.......2007-03-15
The central question of this fascinating book is the precise role of energy in the living world.
Biology is in an interesting state of flux, with some visionary scientists believing that all biological processes are explainable by the laws of physics and mathematics. Meanwhile another group believes that quantum mechanics provides the best explanation for life process and a minority who think that we need to look elsewhere for an explanation of biological organization and function. In the middle is a very large group of teachers are researchers who are unfamiliar with the debates that are raging at scientific conferences and in the scholarly journals.
This is far from being an idle discussion: it has enormous implications for our understanding not only of biology, but also of health and disease. Wherever your sympathies lie in this ongoing debate, it is useful and important to know the current state of play in each of these different camps.
This book is an extremely well written and enthralling account of scientific discovery, that focuses on the efforts of a determined band of investigators who believe that they can - simply by using the currently known laws of physics and mathematics - build a unified theory of how living organisms function.
The idea that energy might be a unifying concept is not new. One of the first to discuss it was D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson who published a classic book on the topic - On Growth and Form - in 1917. In that book Thompson explored the effects of body size on life. Since larger animals need to expend more energy to do their day-to-day jobs, he began the study of metabolic rate and the way in which it sets the tempo for life processes. If metabolism slows, then so do all the processes in cells and organs. There is an almost linear relationship between metabolic rate and animal size: unicellular organs produce and require little energy; a leopard or elephant requires an enormous amount. That much is obvious. But what is less obvious is that there is a precise mathematical formula, first discovered in the 1930s, that relates body mass and energy use.
This initial observation has been expanded over the years and some theorists now consider that metabolic energy is the common denominator in determining animal form and biodiversity.
For example, larger animal species require more food and land, and are therefore more vulnerable to extinction than smaller creatures. An argument that has been applied to the extinction of the dinosaurs and the eventual emergence of small, mobile proto-mammalian species. I was interested to learn that some biologists working in animal conservation have discovered a mathematical law linking the specific area within a region and the number of species that it can sustain. On the other hand, the simple formula linking body mass and metabolic rate is the most parsimonious explanation for the quickest way for an organism to keep its cells supplied with energy, given the way in which the geometry of transportation systems change with size.
Although this a book about biology, it is easy to see that many of the same principles apply in countless other situations, including supply lines for an army, or the provision of men and materials in a game of chess or soccer.
This book explores a number of important idea, though I remain doubtful that all biological phenomena can be explained so neatly. I still tend to favor the group of biologists who think that the ultimate solution to biological form and function requires a new - and a yet poorly defined - organizing principle.
This is science writing at its best, and I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in human and animal biology.
