5 out of 5 stars One of the best books.......2007-10-10

This is the sweetest bed time book. The rhymes are so sweet. I love reading it to my daughter and she enjoys it as well.

5 out of 5 stars Destined to be a classic.......2007-09-23

I belong to a local reading council made up of several teachers and librarians and one of the service projects that we participate in involves giving a book to all newborn babies in our community, along with some literature about how important it is to read to your child. When it came time to choose a book for this project Mem Fox's "Time for Bed" was our choice. The words are a perfect bedtime lullaby and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful! I think this story is destined to be a classic bedtime story and I hope it is read for generations to come!

5 out of 5 stars Enduring classic bedtime story.......2007-08-24

Sweet and loving, gentle and soothing, beautifully illustrated ! A favorite of my 6 children as they were growing up and now enjoyed by my grandchildren. Highly recommended !

5 out of 5 stars Twelve years reading this and its still a favorite childrens book.......2007-08-13

I have been reading this book to my grandbabies for the past twelve years....and as each one hears it for the first time, it instantly becomes one of their favorites. Timeless.

5 out of 5 stars Our first choice for a bedtime book.......2007-07-16

My son was 14 months old when he gave up his bottles before bedtime. As an alternative to the bottle, he chose this book. He responded to the rhythm of the poetry and was charmed by the little baby on the last page. He is always happy to see her, and seems inspired by her to curl up in his own bed and go to sleep too.

We would highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars great read.......2007-07-23

I have read this book three times - bought this copy for my daughter. It is fun, full of wisdom, and hard to put down. A great gift for the open minded and curious!

5 out of 5 stars What a FUN way to explore the nature of reality!.......2007-02-07

I was so glad they re-released these books. I love the whole series. As novels they are great, but as an explanation of how the universe works they are awesome. I espeically love the old age home of the gods!

The whole idea of all time being simultaneous is so clear. Made me wonder if we aren't all just someone's oversoul!

5 out of 5 stars Metaphysics on another level.......2007-02-07

For those of you who love fictional accounts that leave you on a different plane of existence, this is for you. Many may prefer books that spell things out and leave you with a set of rules to follow from some motivational speaker. This book offers your imagination an enjoyable trip that leaves you with some new perspectives and concepts with which to create your own life.

5 out of 5 stars Cosmic fun!.......2006-01-06

Read this and you will never be the same again! Unlike anything else I have ever read, the Oversoul 7 trilogy stands alone, and in my top 5 books of all time. Cosmic truths presented in fictional format, but NOT cheesy or contrived like most 'New Age fiction.' You know what I mean - those books that have a story just to provide an excuse for New Age preaching. blech. It's great when it works, but it rarely works. Well this time it works! Jane Roberts pulls it off, and pulls it off quite well!

Read Oversoul and your dreams will come alive. You will look at every sunflake with new appreciation. Your sense of time and space will be forever altered. You will grasp at last the paradox of nonlinear time (ie, 'time travel'). You will meet unforgettable characters and remember them fondly many years later (the hallmark of a great book). And, you'll have fun reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Oversoul Seven.......2005-03-20

I am an avid reader (although usually of non-fiction books), and I was completely taken in by this work of "fiction"! In fact, I read the entire trilogy (nearly 600 pages) in just a few days!

I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the metaphysical. Although it's fiction, I believe it shares some of the "real" views of the author - apparently obtained during her messages from Seth (I haven't yet read her "Seth" books yet, so I can't be certain about this).

Basically, this is a story about the journey & subsequent learning of a non-physical being - oversoul seven, and his many teachers along the way. It is beautifully written, and such a page turner, that I only wished there was more stories of the adventures of this quirky soul.

If you are at all interested in the "metaphysical", or enjoy this authors books re: Seth, I would highly recommend "The Oversoul Seven Trilogy" - the author presents some of the most difficult of concepts in an easy, enjoyable way. I can't speak highly enough about this book!

Book Description

Hannah thinks tonight's Passover Seder will be the same as always. Little does she know that this year she will be mysteriously transported into the past where only she knows the horrors that await.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Devil's Arithmetic.......2007-09-02

Hannah is a young woman, thirteen years old and a fairly normal sounding teenager. She has no true understanding of her family's culture, or of the memories that are in her blood, ones shares and must not forget. Hannah is reborn into Chaya, as she is taken from a normal, rural life in 1942, into one of the Nazi death camps. We watch as the daily struggles for life transform this teenagers understanding of her world, what it has become and what it was. The glimpses of her true time period, the 1980's, are seen as madness in the camps, but she speaks truth. And she remembers the most important gift of all. Chaya gives up her life for Hannah's ancestor, Rivka, so she may escape to live her life. I enjoyed the family future and past connections; it made the book at that more personal since the readers become so close to her extended family, all in both versions of time. The deep emotions this book brings to the surface would take a careful working, well versed teacher. But this book is told in a way that is an accurate, as well as age appropriate way of explaining, in first person, some of the atrocities that humans can do to one another. On page 163, where Hannah is back in her own time and explains to Aunt Eva what the numbers on her arm mean, I almost started crying. What a powerful way to end the book. "J18202. J is for Jew. And 1 because you were alone, alone of the 8 who had been in your family, though 2 was the actual number of them alive..."

4 out of 5 stars Not Enough Depth.......2007-08-26

This was a good book, but it wasn't as informative as I had hoped it would be.

5 out of 5 stars Great book...made me cry.......2007-03-21

I read this in 7th grade some years ago and I couldn't help but cry in class and hope in the future this doesn't happen again. At that time, I knew about the holocaust pretty well and seeing a movie called Paperclips the previous year I say I knew enough, but this book showed it in a simpler way. It was in a view of a girl around my age then or so and it was so very emotional and powerful. This is a great book to read or lend to a friend to show them a part of a history. You learn that Jews are people aswell like any others and they can be a spanish jew, english jew, american jew and so on. It isn't an ethnic/race, it's a religion. Killing Jews then is like killing Catholics right now or any other religion. Jews did nothing wrong, but even today I know some people that hate them, but for no reason, only because they were taught to or what their family believed. After I lended this book to some friends, they understood more.

Overall, this is a great book, which can not only be enjoyed by teenagers, preteens and such, but for adults aswell. You understand it more than by just reading history books, this gives you a story to go along with it and it stays in your mind and doesn't go away like when you study for a one time exam and it is no use to you after you ace the test. This is a really must read.

5 out of 5 stars The Devil's Arithmetic.......2007-03-13

The more that are added the more that are subtracted...
"The devil's arithmetic," that was what Gitl called it. Everyday, more and more Zungangi arrive at the camps. Everyday more Jews are chosen. The more in the camps the less in the world. Adding and subtracting. The children think the work is hard, but the Jews hated it because they subtracted lives and added Jews to the horror.
It all started when Hannah, a young Jewish girl, resented going to her family's traditions. She symbolically opened the door to the prophet Elijah after she drank too much wine at her family's Passover Seder. She is transported back in time to 1942, just before the Holocaust. The Nazis came and took the Jews away. Hannah tried to warn people about the concentration camps but nobody believed her. Hannah learned why all of her relatives were so upset about the numbers on their left arms.
The Devil's Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen, was very descriptive and touching, especially when Chaya makes a sacrifice -a big one- for family, friends, and religion. This was a fabulous insight on what really happened in the Holocaust. This book made you feel like you were really in the concentration camps and you could almost hear the harsh voices and smell the horrible smells of blood and sweat.
We highly recommend this book for readers of all ages. It gives you a whole other opinion on the Holocaust and lets you really know how horrible it was and how many people died long, slow, painful deaths. It makes you cry, laugh, smile, and opens up a whole new point of view.

5 out of 5 stars Sucked Into the Past a review by James, Taylor, Jonahthan, Sebastianne, Rebecca, and Danilo.......2007-03-13

Picture this, you are a thirteen year old girl who hates going to her family Seder. You're forced to go anyway, and you open the door for the prophet Elijah. In the award winning (National Jewish Book Award) novel the Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen, weird things start to happen. Jane Yolen captivates the heart and soul in each and every reader, ensuring that readers will be delighted to the fullest.
The Devil's Arithmetic is about a girl named Hannah at her Passover Seder she opens the door to the prophet Elijah and ends up in a small village in 1942. It's during the second World War, before this Hannah lives in New Rochelle with her father, mother, and little brother. But after that fateful night, when she was hurled into the past she became different. People keep confusing her with someone else, a girl named Chaya. They talk about her parents, dead from Cholera and a place called Lublin. But her parents are fine aren't they? At a wedding,Hannah, the bride, groom, and everyone else are captured by the Nazi's and taken to concentration camps. Once there, Hannah doesn't know past from present. In this book Hannah goes from being selfish to fighting for the Jews, being strong although people have lost all hope, and being brave even though she knows only fate lie ahead. Jane Yolen brings the past into the present with this dynamic book that draws you into the setting. It makes you want to cry, and in the end sigh with relief. This book tells you to never give up and to be grateful for what you have. It is a lesson on how cruel people can really be.
Everyone will enjoy this captivating book about survival. I would recommend this book to kids age 11 and up. People who enjoy history and survival books will appreciate this astounding story about the Holocaust by the wonderful author Jane Yolen.

5 out of 5 stars Very handy book.......2005-12-14

This is a very useful book in many aspects: it's easy to read, interesting to read and it's easy to adopt the learned practices in real, daily situations. Regardless of who you are and what are you doing, in business or just trying to do better in personal life, this book could help, if only you have enough self-confidence and willingness to try.

5 out of 5 stars Get this book! Unless you don't like saving money!.......2005-05-07

This is the best book on negotiation I have ever read. It is filled with practical advice on what to do when you face a tough counterpart. Even if you aren't the type of person who wants to use specific tactics in the "negotiation game" you still need to get this book to make sure you know what to do when certain tactics are used against you! Don't get taken advantage of!

4 out of 5 stars Negotiation Basics and Beyond!.......2005-01-21

Peter Stark takes common sense and turns it into "common practice." Just knowing a technique is not enough -- you need good examples and you need to learn how to counter tactics when used against you. This is both a good review of negotiation skills, as well as a primer for those who are negotiating for the first time. Check this book out -- your only disappointment will be in not using the suggested strategies.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on negotiation I have ever read!.......2004-12-09

Negotiation is a major part of my day-to-day job and recently I was completely "out negotiated" by the manager of a printing company in our area. It was still a 'win-win' but I conceded more than I needed to without gaining anything in return.

As a result, I thought I better sharpen my skills and bought this book after it was recommended to me.

The ONLY Negotiating Guide You'll Ever Need is great! Not only did I finish it in a single day, but I was amazed that I saw word-for-word several of the tactics that had been used by the printing company manager (and many other decision makers over the last 10 years!).

Next time I will be ready!

5 out of 5 stars Bargain, this book will definitely pay for itself.......2004-07-10

Typically you get what you pay for. I have a den full of books that I paid over $50 for that I reference frequently and I have many books that I paid under $20 for that I look at and cringe when I think of the time I wasted reading them. This is an inexpensive book that gives valuable advice and examples that can help improve your negotiation skills immediately. I read it twice and plan on referencing it often. I circulated it to my purchasing department and made them read it (well at least they all claimed they read it).

1 out of 5 stars Awful, absolutely awful.......2005-04-23

This book is absolutely awful. It's full of ad hominem remarks and plays to the emotion of women being in prision. Why are most people (not just women) in prison there? Because they commited a crime!!! The author blames men for most of these women's crimes throughout the book - they were abused at a young age by men, they were poor . . . excuses. When will people take responsibility for their actions? The book has some beautiful photography - they should have taken the ink used for the text and put in some more pictures. Don't buy it, don't read it. I'm sorry I wasted my time.

5 out of 5 stars Compassionate photos and text about women in prison.......2000-10-10

This an extraordinary book of photographs and text about women in prison. The title of the book is an apt and ambiguous description of the plight of the women prisoners she describes, for two of her major points are that they generally lead more barren lives than men within prison walls and also are often given heavier sentences than men for comparable crimes.

Jane Evelyn Atwood is a compassionate American who has spent most of her adult life in France, and has become one of the outstanding photojournalists in the world. While other talented photographers earn a lot of money taking pictures of fashion models and high society, Atwood's committed outlook has led her to depict the less-fortunate specimens of the human race. Her subjects have included blind children and Parisian prostitutes. Years ago, she was the first to photograph the terrifying physical decline of a man dying of AIDS, which broke new ground when her reportage was published in Paris Match.

In Too Much Time, the striking and poignant photos, in black and white, are reason enough to buy the book but that would be only half the story because Atwood is one of those rare photographers who can write as well as they take pictures. Indeed, when I became engrossed with the text, not only her own words but also transcriptions of what American women prisoners told her, I almost forgot that it was a picture book.

5 out of 5 stars Jails on pictures.......2000-04-09

The authors visited about 40 prisons. The pictures she took are of very good quality and very expressive. She interviewed the women in jail. The stories of those prisoners are really moving. It's a moving, respectful book about the life of women in jail.

Book Description

Discover the Power of Positive Time-Out
Time-out is one of the most popular disciplinary techniques used in homes and schools today. But instead of being the positive, motivating, experience it should be for children, it is often punitive, counterproductive, and damaging to their gentle psyches.
In this book, bestselling parenting author Jane Nelsen shows you how to make time-out a positive learning experience for children. Inside, you'll discover how positive time-out can teach children the art of self-discipline and instill such invaluable qualities as self-confidence and problem-solving skills. You'll also learn how to:
·Make time-out an encouraging experience
·Develop an attitude and action plan to avoid power struggles with children
·Empower children by involving them in the behavior changing process
·Understand the mistaken goals of negative behavior
"Gives parents and teachers the encouragement and tools they need to help children handle their own behavior."— Sheryl Hausinger, M.D., Texas Children's Pediatric Associates and mother of three
"Offers more than 50 ways that parents can set limits while still encouraging their kids. It should be in every doctor's waiting room."— Jody McVittie, M.D., family physician

5 out of 5 stars The best secret in the Positive Discipline Series.......2006-06-04

The Positive Discipline series is all about non-punitive, respectful discipline (discipline=teaching). Treating your children with kindness and firmness at the same time is the key.

This book talks about the need for a cooling off period when emotions run high (on either side) before the problem-solving session can begin. This Positive Time-Out is a choice made by the child to be most effective. The child helps to choose it in advance, when there's no conflict. Jane Nelsen stresses the point that children do better when they feel better.

The parent can take one too whenever he/she needs it. When both sides have calmed down, there's a focus on solutions, not blame.

This book also gives 14 attitude tools (for those who find it hard to shift from punishment to non-punitive attitudes) and 41 (yes, 41!) action tools you can use to guide your child. It's gentle, effective discipline in my book!

What I think is important in this book is also the need for children to develop a "can do" attitude. Jane Nelsen talks about the Significant Seven Perceptions and Skills children need to thrive in the world. If every parent would help their children achieve these social and life skills, children would be more confident, cooperative and well-adjusted as adults.

A handy, great book brimming with wonderful ideas!

5 out of 5 stars Tons of Help for Parents and Kids.......2005-10-29

This book had many tools that help you with parenting! Many books offer extreme ideas or only ideas the help "fix the kids". This book gives many ideas with recognizing and working with the common difficulties of being a parent and gives many tools for helping parents and kids. I have just finished reading this book and have had two wonderful weeks with less struggles with my two kids and much more cooperation. I also learned more about my limits and when I need to take time to calm down from a situation and how to do so. I found this book very helpful and very affordable.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading.......2001-08-15

This is one of the best books available for people who either have children or work with them. The make sense, and they work. Why would children do better when they are punished, when adults don't? I've used these ideas with the children I work with, as young as age three, and they work. I've also taught them to parents who have taken parenting classes with me, and all have reported success with the method. It allows us as adults to avoid power struggles, set clear limits and have boundaries with our children, rather than using external control. As the author explains, external control doesn't work in the long term - kids only learn how to not get caught, or they become totally dependent on the approval of others, which makes them likely to get caught in peer pressure. Punitive time out teaches conformity and compliance. Postive time out teaches kids to think about the impact of their behaviour on others and the consequences of their choices.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo and thank you.......2000-08-04

Bravo and many thanks to Jane Nelsen for her latest book, Positive Time-Out. Since it's publication last November, nearly two hundred parents from my workshops have tried this fabulous approach with their children. The response and outcome has been more than favorable. Parents have shared that they no longer experience the power struggles and frustration that had accompanied their previous attempts with time-outs. Initally, many parents expressed hesitance in using this approach. Most said they felt it was necessary to make time-out punitive--even if they were following many of the Positive Discipline guidelines. However, I consistently hear parents say, "since we've changed our approach and stopped using time-out as a punishment, things have improved". All of Jane Nelsen's books have reframed the parenting approach from a negative to a positive and indeed it has helped many families achieve peace, cooperation, and satisfaction. As a parenting educator, I have used this model exclusively for nearly twenty years and have had the experience of receiving compliments and gratitude from the thousands of families who have benefitied from it's amazing and positive outcome.

4 out of 5 stars A good, tradional, book on real-time systems.......2002-02-06

This book covers real-time systems in a 'traditional', theoretical, way. The book focuses on hard real-time scheduling, and more recent issues - such as the use of time-triggered systems - are given no coverage. It does cover issues like RMA, etc, clearly. Further examples from real applications would be a real bonus: almost all the examples are of an abstract nature.

5 out of 5 stars A plain and comprehensive one........2000-07-14

I will say this book is really the best book I have ever read in the field of real-time systems. The author is a distinguished researcher in this field, as no one will doubt this. The book covers all the issues(new and old) in the real-time systems. Written in plain language with ample examples, the book is easy to read. At the same time, the author deliberately maintained the depth of the book, embeded the theoretical stuff in it. However, I have to say this book mainly focuss on the hard real-time systems. Maybe this is because soft real-time is still a new issue in this field. Keep this book if you are a researcher in this filed, or you are a student studying this course. You'll have the same feeling with me.

5 out of 5 stars very cool book.......2004-11-18

Basically A Stitch in TIme is full of reprints of period knitting and crochet patterns along with the picture that appeared with the pattern when it was first published. SInce handcrafts tend to be time less (ie a sweater looks the same now as it did 100 years ago) I have to commend Waller on compiling this. The patterns here have a good amount of period feel to them. You get shoulders so high and pointed that they look as if they could take and eye out, a whole section on one piece swim suits and more interesting sleeves and collars than I can count.

I particularly liked the section on hats. Many of them are asymmetrical and parallel what ever style hat was popular at the time. No berets and skullcaps fit all approach here.

This is a really neato book. The patterns are very distinctive. I recommend it if you are curious about older patterns or want to make something that doesn't fit the normal knitting mold.

Book Description

Highly textured objects such as plaited paper baskets, woven lanterns, small hearth rugs, and cork tables are featured in this beginner's guide to nonloom weaving. The easy instructions teach ancient techniques such as braiding, stringing, and knotting—and call for everyday materials such as copper tape, plastic sheeting, paper yarn, and granite tiles—to produce stunning contemporary designs for the home. A short essay about natural materials and the creative process introduces each project, and lovely photographs showcase the final results: sleek window hangings, stick-and-string coasters, pillows covered in canvas tape, and woven paper cards. A list of resources, an assortment of weaving tips, and suggestions for further reading are included.

I love to weave but seldom have time to warp a loom and weave. This book has so many cool projects that can be completed quickly and satisfy my 'want to weave' urge. The projects are fun and quite useful. Many projects would be suitable for a beginner or even older children. An added bonus is that the project also make great gifts.
