Coffee and Dating -- what a mix........2007-08-25
After the events of On What Grounds, Clare and the staff of the Village Blend are back to normal. Matteo is off on a coffee buying trip. Joy has broken up with her boyfriend and is talking about using an on-line dating service, and Clare agrees to try it out also. Quinn and the police officers from the first book are now regulars at the Blend and are shocked to learn that one of the Blends customers has committed suicide. Quinn doesn't believe it is suicide but can't buck his superior. When the second Blend regular jumps from a roof it's too much for coincidence. Meanwhile, at the Cappuccino Connection run in the upper level of the Blend, Clare thinks she's found Mr. Right, Bruce Bowman. The murders appear to be related to the on-line dating service and now Joy may be in danger too.
The plot is tightly woven. There are short segments from the killer's diary but it is so well written that you can't be sure who that killer is even with the diary entries to help you out. In fact, I changed my mind about four times while reading only to find out I had it right in the first place. I do so love books that keep me guessing even when they appear to be so cut and dried -- sort of a bait and switch not on the part of the author.
For a second book in a series it upholds the integrity of the first story and the initial characters and just adds to the depth and interest. There's also more information about the use and history of coffee along with the recipes in the back of the book. I'm looking forward to trying the coffee marinated steak (sounds good).
The Best Mystery of the Series.......2007-07-29
I have read all of the Coffeehouse Mystery books, and I think this is the best mystery puzzle of the series. The red herrings really had me guessing and Coyle even gives us the murderer's POV throughout, which makes the story even more exciting (and more challenging). The characters are as wonderful as ever. You can start here or anywhere in the series for that matter--the latest is Decaffeinated Corpse. The character backgrounds and relationships are always well explained in every book, so you won't be confused or lost. The first in the series is On What Grounds, and it's a solid mystery, too. But don't miss this one! It's a little darker, but it's still full of humor, wonderful moments, and it's a very fast-paced and well-plotted mystery puzzle, too. Recipes are at the end, as always (including a rather interesting one for coffee-marinated steak, which was apprently an old trick for tenderizing beef).
Second Book in the Coffee House Mystery Series.......2007-07-27
"I didn't notice when he'd arrived. Not right away. Which was very unusual. Because ever since he'd first walked through the Blend's front door a few months back, I'd *always* noticed." -- From the book
In the first book of the Coffee House Series, On What Grounds, the story focused on Clare Cosi--manager of The Blend coffeehouse. Madame, her ex-mother-in-law, was a primary character, as was her ex-husband, Matteo. Added to the brew was a chilly-but-handsome detective, Clare's daughter Joy, an attempted murder at the cafe, and lots of coffee tips.
In the second book of the series, Through the Grinder, Clare has pretty much settled in to her old job in NYC. While chatting up some of her morning customers, she gets the idea to join an online dating service--mostly for her daughter. She also decides to attend The Blend's monthly Cappucino Connection for singles--much to the surprise of both Joy and her co-worker, Tucker!
While the first book focused on one "accident", this book centers around a serial killer--and *several* deaths. In the midst of all of these suspicious deaths (were they suicide...or murder?), Clare meets a charming man by the name of Bruce. Is he as magnificent as he seems to be...or is he, in fact, somehow involved in the deaths of three young women?
Through the Grinder repeats some of the coffee shorthand in the first book, but that's quickly gotten out of the way at the beginning. Coffee making tips, a few recipes, and SoHo archaelogy also make an appearance in this mystery.
Clare is as likable as ever, and I really relate to her because she's from Southwestern PA...even though she now lives in the Big Apple. I keep hoping she gets back with her ex, in some ways, and BOY...does the chemistry between them sizzle!
I gave this book only four stars because while it was almost as engaging and the first installment, the ending to this book was unnervingly, surprisingly sad. I realize that deaths occur in cozy mysteries--but they are usually "cozy" because there's not a whole lot of trauma or grisly descriptions.
So while the first book left me feeling satisfied and eager to start Through the Grinder, this one left me feeling a bit emotionlly deflated. But apparently, not TOO deflated...because I just ordered Latte Trouble (Book 3), Murder Most Frothy (Book 4), and Decaffeinated Corpse (Book 5, which was just released July 2007).
You can read my review of book 1 about the series itself, but like that book, Through the Grinder has believable characters, a keep-you-guessing mystery, and mouth-watering descriptions that leave you feeling like you're *right there*. I look forward to getting started on Book 3!
enjoyable, but some annoyances.......2007-07-06
Eventually the strong story pulled me in, but it took a while. Primarily, the writing style got on my nerves. Ms. Coyle's writing goes heavy on the adjectives and I started to feel as if I was reading some overly flowery menu or sales catalog. Also, incorrect word usage like "palette" instead of "palate" and "discrete" instead of "discreet" is distracting and annoying in a book that seems fairly literate in other places. If the author doesn't know the correct spelling of the intended word, you'd think the editors would! I could honestly do without Clare bragging about her "C-cup" bustline too, it is pretty tacky. I was ready to quit after the first couple of chapters, but the plot got interesting and the writing smoothed out (or the story pulled me along so I noticed it less). The mystery is a good one and the conclusion satisfying without seeming contrived. I didn't guess who the real killer was till right at the end. The characters are nicely drawn and have dimension and I am happy that Clare's relationship with her ex isn't as irritating as I found it in "On What Grounds". Beware, if you like coffee, you'll find yourself wanting way more than your usual dosage as you read this book!
Light entertaining series.......2007-05-11
The stories do have a good plot. Much too heavy on the coffee trivia and lots of by the way information. I hope as the series goes on the author will realize we have gotten to know the characters and let them speak more for themselves. Still, for some light clean reading these are pretty good.

Book Description
Rich with humor and metaphors from other cultures and disciplines, Turtles develops the characteristics common to the geniuses whose patterning formed the initial body of NLP techniques. You will learn how these skills are readily available for cultivating your own personal genius in a way that is respectful of the power of the unconscious.
This book is the documentary, with added notes and stories, of Grinder/Delozier's five day seminar called "Prerequisites To Personal Genius". John Grinder and Judith Delozier get their participants to think about the structure of thinking; how our thought patterns become our beliefs about reality. The limitations of those thought patterns can be overcome, however, when a person is able to expand his/her perceptual filters and model "geniuses" -- this is the process which has been shown in the lives of people such as Einstein, Milton Erickson, and Gregory Bateson.
Throughout the book, the authors challenge you to reexamine the structures of your "mind" and the ways that all parts can be integrated in an internal dance.
Customer Reviews:
Where's Bandler when you need him.......2007-09-04
I thought that the information presented in this book was good, it just needed a much better presentation, and unfortunately, the book falls short in helping us understand just exactly what's going on.
This seminar would have been much more understandable on video. About a third of the time that the readers spend with Grinder and DeLozier is completely unaccounted for, when they go off to learn african dancing. Unfortunately, because we can't see anything that is going on during these activities (critical to the understanding of the book, mind you), some of the discussion and lecture is difficult to follow, and it's impossible to actually try the activities at home and be a part of the experience.
In fact, it seems like the authors went out of their way to make it impossible for us to see into this activity. Each day's sessions break off right before they begin the dance lessons, and each day seems to start after all of the dancing discussion has already taken place. When the audience goes to talk to the African dance instructor at the end of the novel to share some of their experiences and ask him questions, the book comes to an end. Thus, this experience which the authors felt was so key to understanding the lecture in person is completely left out of the book version of the seminar, and that's a real shame.
Then there is the lecture itself, which is primarily comprised of Grinder and DeLozier reading biology books and Carlos Castaneda to the audience at large. It makes for a very unusual presentation that is very often difficult to follow, and there is no way that you can set this book down unless you're at a clearly defined stopping point (which are very few and far between, especially at the beginning).
The dialogue between the authors and the audience is often poorly handled, as it doesn't account for interruptions, so an author will speak a complete thought answering a question or interjecting a response to something that hasn't happened yet, followed by the question or comment that was just answered. If you think that "Persuasion Engineering" is poorly written, wait until you see this!
What this book showed me is exactly why Bandler is still famous and why Grinder has fallen off the face of the planet. He's not entertaining, and he's not particularly good at explaining himself in his own words! Half of the questions he is asked are answered with a quote from one of the source books, while the others were done with rambling stories that required four pages full of backstory so that we can understand what happened. There is one segment of Grinder giving out homework that literally spans 22 pages thanks to three easy-to-answer questions.
For the information included in this book, it's worth the price, but make sure to set aside full reading sessions if you're going to read this because it's very hard to follow and very disorganized. And don't think you're going to get to experience this book at any level other than a theoretical one, because it's just not possible. A possibly great guide gone bad.
It's the journey, not the destination.......2004-08-21
John Grinder and Judith Delozier provide the reader with a journey through one of their seminars. It wakes you up to your life. Or, more accurately, it can. I have read almost every NLP in print and pretty much all of the ones out of print. I hold certifications in NLP and Ericksonian Hypnosis as well a my Unversity education as an anthropologist. I found this book a bit of a stretch for my vocabulary, and a wonderful journey through a series of highly transformative experiences. Read it with your mind open and do the drills and you will find your life changing.
school cafeteria left-overs at a steak-house price.......2004-07-20
First, let me say I own most of the NLP books and highly esteem John Grinder & Richard Bandler. NLP is amazing stuff. TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN, on the other-hand, is, to use a re-frame, left-overs from the NLP School Cafeteria with a steak-house price. This one is going into the garbage where school cafeteria swill belongs. Don't waste your time or your money on it. Buy the other NLP books! This one won't make you a champ, and you won't feel like a chump.
Impeccable Internal Organizational Patterning.......2002-02-20
Turtles is a book for people already exposed in some degree to the basic tenets of NLP. It is not "about" NLP, but how to create logical structures and frameworks within yourself to employ these (and other) tools in a most effective and ecological manner. A great deal of emphasis is placed on applying the right energy to the right "logical level". Often, people are making the right move in a situation, but applying that move to the wrong logical level. This book is about identifying logical levels and having an internal structure that allows you to interface at the right time at the right logical level with the right change- the minimum effort that makes the maximum difference. Grinder is a master storyteller given his exceptional background, and he winds the teachings around interesting and compelling stories from his and other fascinating folks' experiences. Worth the read even if you never learned anything about NLP. Grinder's a cool dude! :)
Nothing New.......2001-11-08
Much as I hate an argument, I must point out that the previous reviewer is seriously misinformed if he thinks that the material in this book was in some way new or different from the original NLP.
Terrence McCLendon, writing in "The Wild Days : NLP 1972-1981" explains in detail how Bandler and Grinder discovered Castaneda's work (the basis of "New Code" NLP) in 1974, and quickly incorporated various ideas - especially "stopping the world" - into their teaching at that time.
Personally I found this book badly written and tedious in the extreme. So nothing new, and definitely not recommended.

Book Description
Wall Street is a funny business. All you have is your reputation. Taint it and someone else will fill your shoes. Longevity comes from maintaining that reputation.
Ask Jack Grubman, the All-Star telecom analyst from Salomon Smith Barney; uber-banker Frank Quattrone at CS First Boston; Morgan Stanley's Mary "Queen of the Net" Meeker; or Merrill Lynch's Henry Blodget.
Well, they probably won't tell you anything. But have I got some great stories for you.
Successful hedge fund manager Andy Kessler looks back on his years as an analyst on Wall Street and offers this cautionary tale of the intoxicating forces loose in the world of finance that overwhelmed sober analysis.
Customer Reviews:
Great, Easy Read!.......2007-04-30
I loved this book. All investors and traders should read it and learn from it. But above all it is such an easy read. It tells the interesting story of Kesslers life in the stock analyst world and confirms what I always thought. They are not as smart as people think.
Tale from an Analyst who is lucky enough to make it to become a VC.......2007-03-19
Andy Kessler wrote this book from a first-person narrative, and as a result, made the book very easy to read. I read it after reading Dan Reingold's" Confessions of a Wall Street Analyst" then Charles Gasparino's "Blood on the Street". Reingold clearly has "skin on the game" and his tendency to focus on the technical aspects of an analyst's job shows, while Gasparino gave a far better high-level perspective than Reingold. Andy, however, appeared to be able to stay independent of the bankers while at the same time being able to benefit from stepping away to becoming a successful VC. As such, while he is able to look at the implosion happening at Wall Street with great behind-the-scenes understanding of what's going on, and at the same time having intimate knowledge of some of the analysts with the biggest name, because he got out early and found something better, the tales appear to be more aloof than either of the other two books. Nevertheless, it is still an interesting read.
Entertaining and educational.......2007-02-14
This is one fo the MBA's books that can actually shed some light on Wall Street. Think of it as counter-balancing the "shows" which the I-Bankers put on the US campuses.
An interesting look at the Wall Street tech world.......2006-08-08
This is an interesting story of a man who got caught up in the world of technology on Wall Street but managed not to get swept away by it. Kessler's story is fascinating-he was an electrical engineer who was hired on by a large Wall Street firm as an analyst when he didn't even know what an analyst was! He got into it mostly for the money, it seems, but did well as an analyst despite making calls that went against the consensus. In his early days (the mid 80's), and later at Morgan Stanley, he met some interesting figures who would play a large part in the tech bubble and blowup of the 90's. As an analyst he refused to compromise himself, and eventually quit Wall Street and started a hedge fund in California. Because of this he was able to avoid the bursting of the tech bubble and escape with his reputation intact (unlike many of his contemporaries). He also had great foresight in his hedge fund, and didn't suffer nearly as much as most people on Wall Street who were heavily invested in tech.
Kessler's story is interesting and many of his anecdotes are entertaining. Where this book falls short, I think, is that it is less a cohesive memoir and more a string of anecdotes and exploits. Much of the book almost gives the impression that one is sitting at a bar listening to Kessler tell stories. That's all well and good, but more detail and a better plot flow would have made this book much better. There is a good deal of name dropping, which is to be expected I suppose, but I didn't find it excessive. Overall this is a decent light read-nothing groundbreaking or memorable here, but worth a casual look.
Amusing, valuable.......2006-08-06
A really funny, close-in look at Wall Street in the dot-com era, told from the perspective of a man who was snatched away from a techie job. A Must Read book when you consider that a lot of the same market hype is back again. Never forget.

frogs into princes.......2007-06-08
This book is a little hard to get into because it is essentially a transcript of a Seminar that Richard and John put on to discuss their views on Neuro-Linguistic Programming to other therapists... These are two of the founders of NLP and it was written in 1979, a time when NLP was trying to establish itself in the therapeutic community. This is readily apparent by the stabs the authors make at existing paradigms. The book does not mention which author is talking so it is difficult to get a grasp of who`s viewpoints are whoms, so it is assumed that both authors are in agreement with the concepts presented. If you get out of the mindset of expecting the concept of NLP being presented in an organized easy to understand manner, then one can glean some interesting information and pearls from this book that I will share.
The authors refer to themselves as modelers. Meaning they are masters of modeling others behaviors:
" We pay very little attention to what people say and a great deal of attention to what they do...The function of modeling is to arrive at descriptions which are useful....We're not offering you something that is true just things that are useful"
They take a certain pride in separating themselves apart from other branches of therapy in that most of the other fields "focus on truth and may or may not get results." However, they re-establish their status in the therapy field by modeling some of the greatest therapists in existence like Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson. There is included a therapy session by Satir with the authors explaining how she intuitively employs NLP by matching the client rather than trying to make the client match them.
They came up with the concept of "if what you do does not work, do something else," which you would think was intuitive. They go on to criticize other therapists who label their clients as "resistant" and accuse the non-NLP therapist that they are shifting the blame of poor results to the client when they should simply be trying something else. To cement this concept they offered discuss an experiment from the eighties where the B.J Skinner did work with rats and mazes. One day, he decided to add humans to the experiment. Over several weeks he performed the experiment where he taught the rats or human to run thru a maze for the reward of cheese or a 5 dollar bill found at the end of the maze. Of course, he noticed the humans were quicker learners as expected. Further results were counter intuitive. When he tried to extinguish the behavior by removing the reward found at the end of the maze, it became interesting. After multiple attempts the rats no longer attempted to run the maze...."however, the humans never stopped!! They are still there! They break into the lab at night looking for 5 dollar bills at the end of the maze." That is the peculiar trait about human beings. "If they find something they can do that does not work, they do it again." Thus the concept of "if what you do does not work, do something else." I could not help but to have visions of Las Vegas and people putting their life savings into the slot machines looking for the reward at the end of the maze.
There was an intriguing sentence on matching where they discussed representational systems and said that to establish good rapport one merely had to match the predicated words of the other person's representational system. But if you want to alienate the other person you could deliberately mismatch the predicates. This skill could be very useful in situation where one would not want to converse like on an airplane.
Another pearl was their view on what words mean. "Words are triggers that tend to bring into your consciousness certain parts of your experience and not others." So you cannot hear a word without having an associative experience. Since everyone's experience is different. everyone's perception of a word will be slightly different. This is called slippage. There is a slippage between the words and a persons experience as well as a slippage between two peoples corresponding experience for the same word. This is their explanation for maps of reality although they do not distinctly label it as such.
The authors went into a great deal of detail explaining to the audience how to attain visual acuity with respect to the eye motions indicating a person's representational system that they are using. They did this with putting several audience members on stage and then asking them questions to see exactly what their body language and eye directions were. They went into greater detail with assessing one audience member as " leads visually, represents kinesthetically and then has an auditory reference system check which tells him that his feelings are valid" I think part of this detail was to impress their audience with complexity rather than present an easily duplicatable system.
They do offer hope in their view of humans. They see people as having only a few strategies. That is why they are good at some things but not others. But by increasing the number of strategies available to a person, they claim that "if any human can do something then so can you." I do agree with this statement as I attribute my life's successes on the ability to successfully model other people's behaviors.
Bandler and Grinder have a unique definition of conscious and unconsciousness. They state that the conscious is defined as whatever you are aware of at that moment in time and subconscious is everything else" Which puts a more tangible definition of what the unconscious mind is, as most definitions quantify it as a limitless entity.
During the seminar the author made a large arc arm movement that startled people. He explained the startled feeling by saying that the hand motion unconsciously told people to process what he was saying auditorily and that it knocked any visual based pictures out of the air. He stated that "if you can determine what a persons lead and representational systems are, you can package information in a way that is irresistible for them" He goes on to say that "the meaning of communication is the response that you get, if you are not getting what you want, change what you are doing." This is similar to Genie Labourde's viewpoint.
The authors site a good explanation for the NLP dictate to not use a negative when discussing a desired outcome. They refer to a child who is instructed "not to fall down." In order for the child to understand the sentence they have to refer to their internal representation of falling down. That internal representation will result in the behavior the parent is trying to prevent. Positive instructions "like pay attention to your balance and move slowly" can yield a more positive outcome.
Concepts from earlier books by the same authors, The Structure of Magic, were reviewed with respect to the metamodel of eliciting more specific responses to questions. The authors demonstrated several examples of metamodel questions. They said to do NLP well one must have mastery over the metamodel questions, otherwise techniques will be sloppy. "Metamodel questions are the questions that really give you the appropriate information immediately"
The second day of the book discusses mirroring and crossover mirroring, gives some example of anchoring and collapsing of anchors and past experiences that the authors had with clients. Overall not as interesting as the fist day as they are merely trying to show the therapists how they have used NLP in their practices.
The third day, discussed states and several organizing principles of states which we find useful. The first principle is that it is better to have choice than no choice. It is the therapist's job to broaden the clients' choices. The second is the notion of unconscious choice. This is where a behavior is exhibited because it fulfills a need even though it is counter to a person's stated conscious desire. For example, overeating as a way of compensating for a failing marriage. The third in that people already have the resources they need in order to change, if they can be helped to use them in the appropriate context. Again, the bally wick of the successful therapist. The forth is that each and every single piece of behavior has a positive function in some context and there is a difference between the behavior and the intention. So when someone exhibits bizarre behavior that is a good signal to you that the person is responding to something that is not available to the typical observers' sensory experience. They are responding to some internal represented thought that is giving them an intended positive experience even though they will not consciously admit it. This is evident when examining unhealthy behaviors that fulfill a secondary gain of some sort. Examples are given on how to reframe these unhealthy behaviors by resolving the conflict between conscious desires and the program that provides a secondary gain. Reframing is accomplished by having the client's sub-personalities talk the situation out and come up with alternative behaviors that serve the whole. If the behavior does not change or reverts, that is a sign that the new kind of behavior was not as effective at fulfilling the sub personalities desires in a congruent way and the discussion must begin anew. Several real life examples are given.
Over all a deep book for my first introduction to NLP. I found myself breezing it rather than reading it because of its more sophisticated intended audience of therapists. After studying Genie Labourde's book a lot of what Bandler and Grinder discussed made more sense than it did when I re-read the book with more knowledgeable eyes. However, I could not shake the feeling that they could have presented the information in a different way and it would have made more sense to all audiences and not been so dry. I got the impression that they were fulfilling the publishers request for this years books and that they didn't write one. The way they spoke in the book, they seemed to be the cowboys of their field. This is evident in the way they buck traditional therapeutics themes and their sometimes irreverent examples of their own therapy experiences with other clients. But sometimes it takes cowboys to rope the existing therapeutic community into seeing a new concept. Bandler and Grinder are perceived to be some of the godfathers of NLP, as such, I am glad to have experienced the book, but aside from its historic perspective, I do no recommend it to the novice NLP student
learning how to use your brain.......2007-03-09
the book was excellant.really tought you how to use your brain in a more productive way.it was written in a way that youll be able to remember the text with ease.
Awesome.......2006-11-21
I have no background in hypnosis or NLP aside from reading some books. Frogs into Princes had a strange effect on me in a very good way and I can't wait to reread it!
How to be a better communicator.......2006-11-21
I have read people's mixed responses to NLP and comments on Amazon about Richard Bandler's background. Fine, approach NLP and hypnosis with some healthy skepticism. However, say what you will, let me quote one tiny paragraph of the book: "We have found that there are three major patterns in the behavior of every therapeutic wizard we've talked to- and executives, and salespeople. The first one is to know what outcome you want. The second is you need flexibility in your behavior... The third is you need to have enough sensory experience to notice when you get the responses that you want. If you have those abilities, then you can just alter your behavior until you get the responses you want." Brilliant. I got it. I can do that and it has helped me tremendously. This simple advice explains to me, why in spite of criticism, this book offers a practical guide to communicate with, build rapport with, and influence people.
If it doesn't work try something else.......2006-10-24
Two popular therapists / organizational consultants in the 1970's recorded one of their 4-day seminars and this book is the result. Neurolinguistic programming is a very physiology- and behaviorally-oriented therapy method, with connections to hypnosis as well. If you're not a therapist (and I certainly am not), why would you read this book? Maybe to challenge yourself with some pretty odd-sounding beliefs about how our consciousness works, and what practical results might be achievable using simple methods. Beware, though, the authors start out by saying that they are not telling the truth -- just telling what works. And that if something doesn't work, try something else. That, at least, is good advice.

A Poor Choice for Trainers.......2000-09-14
Well, I don't know how the author is capable of in class or how he can handle students in challenging situations. I can only judge the book based on my reading. Out of the many trainer/teacher books I have read, this is the worst one. First, it's extremely hard to comprehend, and second, it's too biased in its application.
As good trainers can tell you classroom management is more than just applying a few psychological tricks. It requires a great deal of instructional design, good materials, comfortable environment, etc.
The best teacher I have ever had is the one who cares and willing to go the extra miles. Do I get this out of this grinding book? Of course, not.
ENVoY - THE BEST BOOK OUT THERE!.......2000-09-06
I have read the previous reviews (two very positive and two very negative). I whole-heartedly agree with the two people giving this book and Mr. Grinder high praise for his scholarly work!
I have had the opportunity to be personally trained by Michael Grinder and I can tell you for certain, He is no joke, nor is his work! He has put a lot of time and effort into this project and there is a reason for literally EVERYTHING he has done in this book. Those individuals writing poor reviews about this book either know NOTHING about classroom management, or have NEVER read the book. The $25 this book is currently selling for is not enough. I have taught several years in a high impact school where classroom management skills were a must. Nothing helped me more than reading, and USING the multiple skills presented in Michael Grinder's book. If you are looking for an invaluable classroom management tool (with the proven research principles of Neurolinguistic Programming woven throughout), then you should look no further than ENVoY: Your Personal Guide To Classroom Management.
The nano-technology of human behavior.......2000-05-08
Michael is one of the most perceptive and effective presenters that I've personally experienced. Short of such a privilege to model after him in person, this book is an excellent substitute or beginning to learning the very subtle non-verbal skills for any presenter or classroom management.
Worst So-Called NLP Book.......1999-10-17
There are two problems with this book: (1) Unedited English and unfocused writing and (2) claiming to be NLP when it's not. Don't waste your money on this bad joke. There are better NLP books out there.
Nice Theories But Not Practical.......1999-05-01
Most of the ideas presented in this book are borrowed from Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP). The author tried to apply NLP principles in an unstructured manner that was confusing to read. It's as if the book is written for kinestic people who can never sit still or talk logically. More practical examples are need to demonstrate the concepts in the book.

Customer Reviews:
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!.......2007-08-13
I love it, I love it, I love it! From the very first page, I was hooked. This explains the reframing technique spawned by Virginia Satir and later tweaked by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. This book is great for NLP-lovers as well as regular people who want to learn how to phrase things correctly to allow others to see things DIFFERENTLY in life.
For instance: "This hotel is a dump and there's dust everywhere and paint chipped off the wall," can be reframed to be, "This hotel is a historical antique and it's been left the way it was a hundred years ago, isn't that amazing?"
Also, this explains how people miscommunicate based on interpretations of tonality. For instance, "Oh it's you again." If the emphasis is on the word "again" then people assume it's a negative statement. However, there's absolutely nothing that implies it being negative at all and can be a very positive statement when stated the same way.
Chapter two talks about "negotiating parts" that conflict and how to bring them together. Some people call it parts integration. This explains in detail how to fit it all together. For instance, "A part of me wants to do this, and a part of me wants to do that." This explains how to comfortably decide what needs to be done.
Reframing on page 14 -
Before: "I feel terrible because my boss always criticizes me."
Reframe: "He must really notice the work you do, and like you enough to want to help you improve it."
This book is REALLY a keeper. I love this book probably better than all my current NLP and hypnosis books.
5*****.......2004-04-12
Strengths:practical skills and results can be gained from this book. You can apply reframing in many areas of your life and save money for therapy sessions.
Weaknesses:for some people reading long transcripts (describing the action)may not be suitable. It can be boring, then your brain has no desire in continuing the reading.
However if you have found some specific areas you can benefits, you may want to read this book.
I'm glad I bought this book. hope it improves your life too.
Warning: Don't attempt to learn from book; buy my workshop!.......2004-01-27
More "great communications" form the obfuscators of N L P. If you've shelled out for the workshops, the book may be useful. If all the other NLP workshop-transcription books were helpful to you, may be this one will be. If not... not.
Good luck!
I'll admit.....i didn't use this one right. kinda tough........2002-09-23
I could never master this book. I really just liked reading it because of the procedure. I used it in conversational settings to make myself look smart. Yet i never solved any problems...even my own. I['ve given up on NLP cause of my inability to INTERPRET the meanings given to each NLP thought or action.... i was never able to really get it. So i just used this as a way to let time pass in the laundromat. I tried using it for sales, but i could never get into it with the energy necessary. be well.

Still relevant and a gold mine........2002-04-02
A careful reading of this book will unearth a wealth of information, not only about remedial and generative models developed in early NLP, but also how and why models were designed as they were to begin with. If one keeps that in mind, as well as the primary presupposition (map/territory), there will be no vast discrepancy between old and new NLP, nor even DHE. You can see the roots right here. The authors themselves make a point in saying that the Six Step Reframing pattern, for instance, was only structured the way it was as a teaching tool, and that it should be forgotten once it was integrated with other communication processes. The Parts metaphor, they say, is only a one of a number of ways of mapping "as if," perhaps only a way of "chunking" behavior. Bandler is cleverer than everybody thinks: if he doesn't use parts as a metaphor, then what are all the "machines" he's talking about? What about the spacial/visual representations of decision making strategies, et al? Aren't they essentially the same thing? The problem is people tend to forget that these are not actuallities but only useful ways of talking.
This book takes the simpler version of reframing from "Frogs" and really opens it up, describes how it can be used in conjunction with anchoring and linguistic patterns, until it begins to disintegrate as a specific and separate model and becomes a direction.
For another possible view of these issues, see Anti-Oedipus: capitalism and schizophrenia, by Deleuze and Guattari, which dances along to similar music, including the contradictions...

If you practice NLP, it belongs in your library!.......2007-09-10
The book is a classical by the master itself. If you know something about inductions and hypnosys then you need this book as a reference book. No ifs, buts, then or so. You as book from a master by a master.
Formalization of Erickson's Technique.......2007-08-14
Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. Volume I is an attempt to formalize the verbal and non-verbal hypnotic techniques using transactional grammar. The sections detailing the cases of Erickson were quite useful and absorbing. The discussions of the techniques were very useful.
The sections where the techniques were formalized using transactional grammar were very heavy going and, I felt, added not very to the discussions of the techniques. The use of transactional grammar was quite interesting in that it pointed out that what not was said was as important as was said and how it was said. The transactional grammar sections were interesting in and of themselves as an extension of symbolic logic.
That said, I would recommend starting with another book if you are interested in hypnotic techniques or Dr. Erickson's techniques.
Must read.......2007-08-13
Rather cumbersome reading but, right on track. Very insightful. A must for anyone interested in mentalism/hypnotism.

Great content Hard read.......2007-06-26
There is no doubt in my mind that Erickson is one of the greatest therapists of all time. This book gives examples of his work and attempts to codify Erickson's processes. If your a linguist you will find it readable, if not it's still worth wading through the jargon for the gems.
I hope you find this review helpful.Thank you Russell Cunningham Australian Institute of Self Development

Unreadable.......2007-05-05
Okay, I know Bandler and Grinder are the originators of NLP, but they can't write readable copy to save their lives. Unless you are a true NLP geek, don't waste your money on this unless you want to spend your time scratching your head saying "Is there something I'm missing here?" There are NLP books that are practical and helpful and can even be used by therapists. This is not one of them. I'm sure in person their classes are excellent and I am grateful for their contribution, but not for this book.
OUTSTANDING CLASSIC!.......2007-02-04
Most people do not realize that the contents of this book were taken from transcripts of several live seminars on "Ericksonian-style" indirect Hypnosis conducted by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. The book reads as though you are sitting in the front row and witnessing Bandler and Grinder reveal to you exactly how to do indirect hypnosis, complete with demonstrations of each technique. Since they have not taught together in many years, this is as close to attending a live Bandler and Grinder training as you will come. This book is loaded with insights, tips, techniques - and a great deal of CLEAR and STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTION. If you want to learn HOW TO DO indirect hypnosis, you are going to get a great deal out of this book. It is a MASTERPIECE taught by two brilliant hypnotists and trainers who are legends in the fields of NLP and Hypnosis. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Amazing.......2005-09-26
What else can you say about Richard Bandler and John Grinder together. Truely Amazing!
A true NLP and Hypnosis classic.......2005-03-18
This was one of my first NLP books. I still return to it now and then. If you want to learn some of Bandlers and Milton Ericksons tricks of hypnosis this is a must have. At the same time its now a classic in the field of hypnosis and NLP. Read it, use it and most of all have fun doing hypnosis and NLP. You can read more about me at www.eriklunoe.dk. The website is in Danish.
The Bible of of NLP Books. Interested in NLP? Get this book!.......2004-01-07
John Grinder and Richard Bandlers collaboration in Trance Formations truly aims at the heart of what NLP is all about.
While many other books and individuals have tried to capitalize upon the methodologies within NLP, this book is probably where a lot of the other books derived from. Because of this, the book is highly concentrated with information about linguistics and most importantly, using it to your advantage.
This highly distilled book is comprised essentially of the transcript of a seminar which doesn't allow for the best outlay that you may come to expect in a book. There is no table of contents or an index. However, the fact that what these guys are saying is so clear, so distilled, and so elucidating, it's extremely easy to forgive them for the lack of structure in the book.
I personally carried this book around like a bible after I had first bought it reading as much as possible. Most of the seminar transcript is also where Grinder/Bandler are using the NLP to influence the audience, so you can actually see how masters of NLP use their technique.
Some of the topics that are covered are: presuppositions, nominalizations, unspecified referential indexes, deletion, mind-reading, ordinal numerals, awareness predicates, and a whole slew of other techniques.
It was only after the usage of this book that I truly began to integrate the use of NLP into my life and finally understood how language, pacing, breathing, and touching can truly allow someone to experience things in a different manner.
This book took me a little extra time to digest, keeping in mind that the intended audience is well educated therapists. However, their speaking style is not difficult to comprehend and anyone wanting to learn NLP and you can do so very well with a solid study of this book.

Customer Reviews:
Not very good actually .......2007-06-11
The book presents a few ideas and techniques from the field of psychology (ie critical thinking) but , because its an introduction, does not go into any real depth. It leave the reader feeling a bit cheated really. Anyone who's really serious can get more knowledge by picking up a few college level text books in psychology and skip this introduction.
The best NLP Introduction .......2007-05-24
I consider myself a dabbler in NLP and have read several books on the topic. Perhaps, "attempted to read" might be a more accurate depiction. I found the works by Bandler and Grinder and the Andreas's very difficult to get through. At the other end of the spectrum, there are other works on NLP or NLP-related techniques that are quite readable but seem geared towards those lacking all self-esteem. This book by O'Connor and Seymour is an easy-to-read, logical, and objective overview of NLP without the claims of life-altering benefits.
For those interested in using NLP to improve communication skills and learn more about how our minds work, this book is the place to start.
Magnificent.......2005-12-29
Informative, Logically sequenced book. I loved it. I wished if it has more illustrations, styling design, and format. It would have made it even more appealling.
Outstanding.......2005-09-05
I very much wanted to get into this little known science of NLP, brainchild of Richard Bandler and John Grinder, for some time. After careful examination of similar books I chose this one after reading some of the page excerpts.
Boy am I glad I did!! This book lays a framework and gives the fundamentals to this awesome science, and does so with such grace and ease that it is mesmerising. It simply and eloquently explains how you can use your brain to it's fullest potential and how to use your senses to design ways to get what you've always wanted.
NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming (don't be turned off by the fancy title) is simply a way of life to help you succeed. It is the language used by winners - the science and art of NLP was invented by studying what successful people do differently to everyone else; how their mindsets allowed them to succeed where others fail.
It's little wonder that this book has got 5 stars from practically everyone who has bought it. It changed my life, and if you are looking for ways to get where you want to be in life then go for it.
Great intro.......2005-09-01
This book takes you right to the core without success stories and other stuffings. Info-packed as it is, it brings you into NLP quick and effortless, describing the concepts in a clear and consistent manner. Recommended reading for all NLP starters.

Applications of NLP.......2000-05-27
This book covers over 45 unique, real-life studies of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) in action. It also contains many metaphores, useful for teaching, excercises, and transcripts of actual therapy work. It is well presented and potentially very useful, for personal change work. Foreward is by John Grinder, co-creator of the NLP field. Authors are quite accomplished in the field, producing a useful guidebook.
