1 out of 5 stars Picture Puzzle Puzzling.......2007-08-09

This book is not for little kids-it is black and white no color at all, not what we expected at all. It is for children who like to color within the lines with thin markers and kids who are old enough to concentrate-likely 10 and over.

5 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment.......2007-05-13

I bought this book for son. He was throughly pleased with it. He said it was the greatest!. The puzzles kept him entertained for hours with never any boredom.

2 out of 5 stars dissapointed.......2005-07-25

im sure the book is fine for those of us who can read. My 5 and 6 year old children(and myself) prefer the hidden picture books that show the pictures that need to be found, not in words, but actual pictures.

thanks,
amy

5 out of 5 stars Great Puzzle Book for Middle School Students.......2005-04-16

The puzzles in this book are wonderful to use after students have finished a test or other work. It keeps them quiet so that the other students can finish their work undisturbed. The puzzles are a little more challenging than the usual Highlights Hidden Picture puzzles, which makes them great for junior high age students. I highly recommend this book and hope that Joe Boddy creates more in the future.

Book Description

In this remarkable new program, Pilates instructor Brooke Siler once again revolutionizes the world of Pilates, reinventing how and where Pilates is performed, to take your fitness to a whole new level. Elegantly designed and beautifully illustrated, Your Ultimate Pilates Body Challenge takes a fresh approach to Pilates, challenging readers to rethink the way they move and to incorporate Pilates-conscious movements into every aspect of life:

At the Gym: Siler takes you through a fun, rapid-fire circuit of machines that gets and keeps you in your cardio target zone. For the first time ever, you will learn how to use powerful Pilates techniques to maximize your workouts on standard gym equipment (StairMaster, treadmill, stationary bike, etc.).

At Home: Siler steps up the at-home basics by applying Pilates’ principles to work with weights, bands, and non-accoutrement-based exercises.

On the Mat: As so many readers and clients have requested, Siler has created four brand-new mat routines specifically to target abs, lower body, posture, and flexibility, and designed to take experienced practitioners and beginners alike to new levels of body-sculpted accomplishment.

Sports: Siler offers insight into secrets of the world’s best athletes, explaining how to move with Pilates form in individual and team sports. With core strength created in Pilates you can hit better golf shots, ski with less fatigue than ever before, and bring more power to your tennis game.

Everyday Life: Using her trademark “Invisible Workout,” Siler shows you how incorporating Pilates-based awareness and movements into everyday activities—such as restocking the pantry, working at the computer, climbing stairs, or picking up the baby—can tone and strengthen your body.

You will be amazed at how much better you feel when your carriage, breathing, posture, and movements are done Pilates-style. This dynamic book shows how Pilates can actually be the basis for total-body transformation—by simply challenging you to get the absolute most out of everything you already do.

5 out of 5 stars Pilates Body Challenge.......2007-10-11

This book was recommended to me by my physical therapist after I went to her for a back injury. It's really helpful because it shows the correct way to do so many things - gym stuff, daily life things, etc. I highly recommend this for anyone suffering from back pain, it's a great tool.

4 out of 5 stars Great practical application of Pilates to everyday life.......2007-01-10

Some great tips to get you using Pilates principles in everyday activities, and to sneak in a mini workout while queuing at the bank! Very practical.

A little repitition if you already have Brooke's earlier book "The Pilates Body", but well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Routines- Perfect for Home Pilates Practitioners.......2007-01-03

I don't recommend this (or any other pilates book, for that matter) to anyone just starting out in Pilates- you need to spend time with a teacher to get the technique down. But, for someone looking to suppliment their studio workouts with a home practice, this book offers a variety of routines that target different areas of the body, along with suggestions for incorporating cardio.

5 out of 5 stars benefits far beyond the physical........2006-11-28

i had open heart surgery when i was a year old. and due to it my posture suffered. i ended up later being diagnosised with both scoliosis and kyphosis. and i had been self concious about my posture for almost twenty years. but within two months of concentrating on the posture exercises in this book i have seen such an immense improvemnet. the exercises are gentle on the body. this is something important to me since there seems to be so much that i am not allowed to do because of too much impact. it is effecient, you will not be on the mat two and three hours doing meaningless reps. i actually feel elegant when i stand. it has turned my self image of an ugly duckling into an emerging swan. my posture has physically improved and my self esteem has soared because of it. i highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve themselves physically, mentally and emotionally.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!.......2006-11-10

I love this book. Its a perfect supplement to Siler's first book. My favorites are the mat exercises that simulate the reformer.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever Written About Triathlon.......2003-11-09

Whenever I found it tough to head out for a run, or wake up early for a swim, I could easily count on this book for motivation. So much, in fact, that I couldn't read it before going to bed or else I'd be too fired-up to sleep!! As a former cometitor at the Hawaii Ironman, this book captures so much of the aura and intangibles of the race and the mindset of those that compete there. While it may have been written many years ago, what it's about is timeless (plus, the beginnings of Hawaii Ironman specifically and the sport of triathlon in general are not only inspiring but extremely interesting). Mike Plant does a fantastic job putting onto paper so many of the unexplainable aspects of endurance and does so in historically accurate and very well written prose. It's inspiring and it's tough to put down, even after you've read it once. I've read the book probably 20 times over the years and it's still a great book that you can just pick up, open to a random page, and read a bit until your batteries are recharged. It's out of print so they're hard to find, especially since those who have their own copy hold on to them forever. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars 1980's Triathlon description.......2000-08-30

This book is basically a re-release of the book Mike Plant wrote 15 years ago. The people he writes about have not competed in a long, long time. Mark Allen is merely an up and comer here, rather than the reigning (now retired) champion we all remember him to be today. The author defends this re-release indicating that the only changes he has perceived are essentially the crowds, the bike technology and the advanced training regimens. OK, I liked reading the book to learn about the history and details of the race and now know my body probably could not survive the heat of the run. Nevertheless, I would have appreciated an update on this world famous event, rather than this attempt to cash in on an old work, with minimal input.

3 out of 5 stars Still a Great Read.......2000-08-13

After all these years, Mike Plant's book still captures extremely well how the Hawaii Iron Man evolved from a death-defying challenge that nobody believed could be raced, to a full-fledged professional championship race that could be fought to the wire by men and women who made that day in Kona the focus of each year. Especially revealing are the author's portraits of Ironman legends Dave Scott and Scott Tinley. Having been taken by Plant into ST's mental and physical preparation for the race year after year, I finished the book feeling a little sorry that Tinley never beat Scott head-to-head in Kona. Much like an Ironman race, the book for me started out a bit conservatively, perhaps unsure how to approach the subject best. But once the setting and the characters fell in place, Plant's narrative moved a lot faster, much like a race that had begun to build in drama.

I would like to make special note of Plant's appreciation of Ironman founder John Collins and long-time race director Valerie Silk. For so many of us who compete in triathlons, follow the action, or just dream about running down Alii Drive some time before the 17-hour cut-off time, it is important to remember how improbable the Ironman's birth, and fragile its nascent years, really were. That, combined with the fact that this race could be blessed with such great, enduring athletes as Scott Tinley and Dave Scott to usher it into the limelight and maturity, is really miraculous, like Silk's fortuitous choice of courses on the Big Island.

I would have liked to read more about female athletes, such as the Puntous twins, Erin Baker, and even Paula Newby-Fraser. Plant barely mentions Sylviane and Patricia Puntous until close to the end of the book, and then nearly all the descriptions are negative. Baker and Newby-Fraser are reverently described, but in nowhere the dramatic shades that the men receive.

Lastly, the atrocious proofreading cannot go unmentioned. After a dozen years since the original printing, one would think that Velo Press could have paid someone a few quid to sit down and correct errors. The mistakes get even worse in the Epilogue, where the author calls triathlon great Greg Welch "Greg Stewart" twice in one paragraph, and an entire paragraph is repeated twice, but slightly differently phrased. This mars an otherwise classic 4-star book severely enough to merit a deduction from this Romanian judge; otherwise, it's a fantastic read that belongs on the shelf with Scott Tinley's own Triathlon: A Visual History (also marred by poor proofreading, but worthy of classic status).

5 out of 5 stars Mike Got It RIGHT!.......2000-03-20

As the founder of the Ironman Triathlon back in 1978, I have seen many attempts to get the story down on paper. Mike gets it better than anyone else so far. I was out of the triathlon picture for some years and appreciate Mike's total, beginning-to-end coverage of the Ironman history. The very few items with which I would take exception are all areas where other early participants have differing recollections or personal agendae. Mike is very careful to cover all sides of an often many-sided history. I recommend this book without reservation. John Collins (9th place, Ironman Hawaii 1978)

4 out of 5 stars Iron Will: Plant Nails It!.......1999-12-28

OK, so I'm a little biased about the book. I'm a triathlete and have competed in AND finished the Ironman. In the years since I've done the race I've been meaning to put into words what I went through. Well, Mike Plant has done my job for me. Every thing I felt during the race was covered in the book. I think my wife gets tired of me reading paragraphs out loud to her: I'm reading about the same emotions, pain, and triumph that I went through.

Plant covers the event's history and the characters that competed in it. The interesting thing about the book is that even though it was written in 1986 (with a 1999 update), the overlying reasons about doing the race and all the feelings that go with it are still there. Sure, these days the technology is better, the athletes faster, the top pros are different; but the overall aura of the race is still there. Mike Plant covers this wonderfully.

One does not need to be a triathlete to enjoy the book. One of the things he mentions is the allure of the event; it's possible that anyone willing to put in the time to train could finish the event. If you are a triathlete and someone asks you "why would you do that to yourself?" Hand then Iron Will and tell them to read on.

Fact: All NASCAR drivers, pit crew technicians, and car owners are required to wear jock straps through the duration of NASCAR race events.

Fact: Bobby Labonte only sleeps every other week.

Fact: Greg Biffle was once married to Maria Shriver.

Fact: Jeff Gordon wears an electric blue latex "rodeo suit" during the 72 hours preceding each race. Also he refrains from eating non-dairy products during this time.

Fact: Shane Hmiel has been operating his car with his feet since the 2002 season when he lost his arms.

Fact: This book is awesome!

This book was good and fun to do but it seemed that the questions they asked were more of from like 10 years ago. It's seems that if you were an older fan and been watching the sport really long you would be able to do it easy. I'm a Huge fan but I've only been a fan for about6 or 7 years and they had alot of questions about Richard Petty and others like Cale and the allisons...But it's a good book!

5 out of 5 stars More than you ever wanted to know.......2007-08-14

If you're used to PADI textbooks with glossy photos or summarized explanations about why certain diving rules hold true, you will be slightly overwhelmed. This is an in-depth discussion of the art and science of breathing underwater.
As you may know, Tom Mount is the founder and current CEO of IANTD which is slowly surpassing TDI as the predominant certifying body of technical diving. His work is backed by the experience of thousands of dives and the lessons from a few mistakes that he discusses candidly in his book (i.e. on-site DCS treatment, what happens when you dive REALLY deep on air). I have read several books on the subject, to include my training manuals and Mount and Gilliam's work is one of the most comprehensive without getting into advanced physiology.
What impressed me the most was the holistic approach they take to diving. They go as far as to discuss the process of aerobic cellular respiration, what it's like to visit a hyperbaric chamber, how to ready a patient on your boat for helicopter rescue and reference yogis and Buddhist monks in proper breathing and relaxation techniques to improve air consumption and reduce CO2 absorption. The information about rebreathers and dive computer technology is a little dated, but their discussion of the development and history of decompression tables (Buhlman, VPM, etc.) that today's modern computers are based on is still relevant. The chapters on gas blending, equipment setup and selecting the best mix for a given depth and duration are readable and offer "plug-in" formulas and practical exercises with an answer key in the back.
As with any diving activity, no one should ever undertake a practice they are not trained for, but understanding this book before you receive your training will further your comprehension of topics your instructor may only skim over or avoid discussing.

4 out of 5 stars In depth overview of Mixed Gas Diving.......1997-07-12

Mixed Gas Diving looks primarily at the use of exotic gas mixes for diving the extremes. There is a useful chapter on Nitrox for recreational divers, as well as good information on Trimix for those delving a little deeper. The book is comprehensive and explores breathing techniques and the physiologicial effects of different gases. Slightly dated now by new rebreather teechnologies, the book is excellent reading for aspirant Nitrox divers and those already using this gas mix. Required reading for Technical Divers. 5 out of 5 stars Love Mega Sudoku.......2007-07-26

I used my scanner to enlarge the mega sudoku to a full page size. It makes it soooo much easier to work. I wish I had kept the pages after I copied them. I'm considering buying the book again just to get more copies. I am no longer interested in 9 x 9 sudoku.

5 out of 5 stars Beware addictive 25 x 25 grids!.......2007-05-03

I had been doing the regular 9x9 grids for awhile when I bought this book. Seeking more of a challenge, I skipped the regular puzzles & went straight for the mega puzzles. Aside from them being small, I have had no trouble solving them in the actual book using mechanical pencils (and reading glasses). Each one has taken several hours & I've gotten more than my money's worth just from these 10 puzzles alone. I'm almost done with the last 25x25 puzzle & I'm wishing I had made copies of the puzzles before working them in the book so I could go back & do them again sometime because I'm having trouble finding any more 25x25 puzzles. After doing the big puzzles, you won't want to go back to boring 9x9's.

1 out of 5 stars Ultimate?!?.......2006-12-08

Ok, so this is the "Ultimate Sudoku Challenge" in whose universe????
A complete waste of money for anyone who is looking for a challenge, and too much money to pay for the 25x25 grid puzzles at the end which are just annoying ( Unless you enjoy doing your puzzles through a magnifying glass )

1 out of 5 stars Ultimate schmultimate - too darn easy!.......2006-11-17

Worked several of the puzzles at the start of this book in about an hour - all quite easy. Skipped to the very last regular puzzle in the book and solved it in about 30 minutes. Tossed book in garbage.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging without requiring guessing.......2006-11-06

I just finished solving the last of the 190 9x9 puzzles, having purchased the book 8 months ago while stuck out of town with a blown car engine. Each puzzle can be solved strictly through logic. No guesses were needed. I find that I averaged around 20 minutes per puzzle, with a few being simpler and a few stumping me for a while. As such, I've definitely gotten my money's worth on this book and am moving on to 2 others that I bought at the same time (Mensa Sudoku and Second Degree Black Beld Sudoku) - we'll see how those match up. And, like everyone else, I haven't tried the 25x25 grids yet. Maybe after I finish the other 2 books...

    Book Description

Great Consulting Challenges: And How to Surmount Them shows how consultants can use the wisdom gleaned from Weiss's own practice and from other seasoned members of the profession to help overcome persistent problems and next-level challenges. Weiss explains that as consultants' careers develop and become more sophisticated and complex, so do the challenges they encounter. For example, the question of price competition occurs at every level of the consulting business, yet the techniques for astutely resolving the issue can be vastly different for the veteran consultant as compared to the novice who is merely trying to establish a new business. In this book, Alan Weiss discusses the great consulting challenges in key areas such as marketing, selling, delivery, and practice management and offers practical advice for overcoming common problems and learning to thrive as a consultant.

It showcases difficult, provoking yet exciting positions such as The Sixty-Eight, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, and The Corkscrew. The photography is as tasteful and striking as the first two books in the series, Sex 101 and Advanced Sex. 5 out of 5 stars Awesome Inspiration.......2003-02-12

I loved the first edition because it mentioned one of the early competitors training for the iron man while living out his van and training himself and others at a health club. This was an inspiratiion to me as an ex-marine/student who lived in his van while attending college and working out/showering in the gym.

My motivation to write this review on an out of print book, was because I would be the first to review it, but I have always referred to the author when people questioned my ability to thrive on a van-lifestyle. My goal was to buy a house by paying for it in cash, but my life has taken a different turn. In any event I am almost 40 years old, in great shape, and have only paid rent for six months in my life.

Thanks Mike Plant for the inspiration.
