Book Description
Most business leaders will admit that their companies can benefit greatly from an outside review, by someone who knows the industry inside out. But in tough times, few can afford to have high-priced strategy consultants on retainer. The solution, according to Saj-Nicole Joni, is to build a network of informal advisers who can provide outside insighta review that has become as important as strategic planning or capital asset allocation. But where do you find these advisers, and what's the best way to work with them?
Through in-depth interviews with some of the most successful executives in the world (Steve Ballmer, Bill Gates, Bill Rubin, John Mack, and Oprah Winfrey among them), Dr. Joni explains how effective leaders create and work with a wide-reaching brain trust people who give them unbiased opinions on tough issues. Using real-world examples, Dr. Joni shows how these outsiders provide the kind of impact and guidance that cannot be achieved from within. And with this knowledge, readers can not only meet but also surpass the raised bar of excellence in today's business world.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good book on critical areas .......2007-06-13
this book deals with the critical leadership skill of seeking competent, unbiased "third opinions" i.e. not going it alone or relying solely on staff and possibly biased peers in making important decisions.
It covers in detail sometimes neglected areas for executive - thinking, relationships, focus.
Not only does the author describe each area in detail, she offers a good deal of advice for putting putting the theory into practice.
I give it 4 stars because the writing is often-time hackneyed "consultant-speak" but I recommend it for any executive or would-be executive.
Exponential Thinking.......2005-12-30
Peter Senge said it best: "Today there are two types of leaders in business: those who don't know everything they need to and those who don't recognize it . . . The Third Opinion is for everyone who knows that they need help making critical decisions and for those whose friends may need to bring it to their attention."
Dr. Joni has provided the research that shows why we can benefit from the power of many. Her research showed a surprising level of isolation at the top of our organizations. "While some leaders find a way to build trusted leadership circles that integrate outside insight and have a few confidants, many are on the other end of the spectrum and only experience greater isolation with each move up the leadership ladder." The background for this research is that the 21st century has drastically changed leadership requirements for our organization. This new paradigm requires new thinking - exponential thinking. It also requires three new habits: the habit of mind, the habit of relationships and the habit of focus.
Exponential thinking comprises six steps: Understanding our own mental models that guide our thinking, Developing our ability to discern patterns, Check and Recheck our hidden assumptions, Create varied scenarios of the future, Look for ways to broaden our line of sight, and Invest in our ability to think in the gray spaces. "Exponential thinking allows you to see all sides of a complex issue; it's the process of examining context, looking for interrelationships, exploring assumptions, and asking questions that reveal the full truth and potential of a situation, like a prism revealing the full spectrum of color within white light." Exponential thinking is best done with others.
Dr. Joni logically explains how these keys - the three habits and exponential thinking - applies to emerging leaders, key leaders and senior leaders in our organizations. Using some tried and true tools to understand our management style, and that of others, we can place ourselves in the organization's structure. Then, armed with a tool she developed, the Star of Complexity Map, we can discover where our growing edges are and work to fill those gaps with trusted third opinions.
This book has helped me explain the minor explosion of CEO groups forming. Independent thinkers, trusted colleagues join together to work on each others business and even personal issues. Vistage International (formerly The Executive Committee) is one such organization. Membership has grown from 11,000 CEOs worldwide to more than 12,000 members in 15 countries. Why do busy executives take time for such meetings? The answer is they have learned the power of exponential thinking, even if they call it something else. This is a must read book for anyone aspiring to leadership in our organizations.
Clarity and logic on an often-muddled subject: leadership.......2004-03-22
Dr. Joni has created a clear, logically compelling case for a new kind of leadership appropriate for the complex age we live in. Too many leaders (and leadership models) still believe that leading is all about making decisions in the splendid isolation of the corporate suite. Dr. Joni shows how to create teams of inside and outside advisors that will keep you from becoming the next Enron -- and avoid being blindsided by the competition you never saw coming from the corner office. More than that, there is profound advice here for leaders at all levels of their careers trying to navigate the tricky waters of corporate politics. A must-read for business people today.
Great Book for Leaders.......2004-03-11
This is one of the best books for leaders to come out in a long time. There is no more important topic than getting the best thinking into leaders' decision-making. I left a job once because all my peers told our boss whatever he wanted - not what he NEEDED to hear. That leader could have benefited from reading Dr. Joni's book. She weaves personal accounts into her text, making for very clear and lively reading. The Third Opinion is the perfect book for business men and women everywhere!
practical advice for a real world.......2004-03-10
Dr. Joni has real world experience in the business environment. Too many professors write business books that are theoretical. Dr. Joni based this book on her experiences in corporate America. If more executives followed her guidelines, there would be less Enron and Tyco disasters that ultimately harm consumers and stockholders. This book should be required reading for us all.

Book Description
Schools played a major role in advancing an ideological justification for mass murder and legitimizing a Nazi culture of ethnic and racial hatred. Wegner provides a fascinating look at the anti-Semitic foundations of Nazi curriculum for elementary schools, paying particular attention to the subjects of biology, history and literature.
Wegner argues that any study of Nazi society and its values must probe the education provided by the regime in order to understand how the official knowledge of the state was circulated and legitimized. Anti-Semitism and Schooling Under the Third Reich chronicles an extreme case of what happens when schools are put in the service of a political agenda.

Book Description
Now updated with a new introduction and bibliography Ian Kershaw's classic study of popular responses to Nazi policy and ideology explores the political mentality of 'ordinary Germans' in one part of Hitler's Reich. Basing his account on many unpublished sources, the author analyses socio-economic discontent and the popular reaction to the anti-Church and anti-Jewish policies of the Nazis, and reveals the bitter divisions and dissent of everyday reality in the Third Reich, in stark contrast to the propaganda image of a 'National Community' united behind its leaders. The focus on one particular region makes possible a depth of analysis that takes full account of local and social variations, and avoids easy generalization; but the findings of this study of ordinary behaviour in a police state have implications extending far beyond the confines of Bavaria or indeed Germany in this period.

Book Description
"The apocalyptic dimension of Hitler and his exterminatory project has often been noted but never developed with the completeness and sophistication of David Redles. This brilliant book will enlighten, surprise, and awaken. It is a story, unfortunately, of continuing relevance for the contemporary world as it grapples with the new terrorism."
Charles B. Strozier, author of Apocalypse: On the Psychology of Fundamentalism in America
"David Redles has tackled one of the most sensitive subjects in millennial studies--the Nazis. He has done an extraordinarily careful and brilliant analysis of the archival material to reveal Hitler's messianic charisma, his appeal both on the ideological and psychological level, illustrating that if you can convince people that they live in apocalyptic times and you have the key to their collective salvation, you can get them to do anything. Given that we live in times that lend themselves to such interpretations, we had best understand the apocalyptic dynamics of reactionary modernism."
Richard Landes, Director, Center for Millennial Studies, Department of History, Boston University
After World War I, German citizens sought not merely relief from the political, economic, social, and cultural upheaval which wracked Weimar Germany, but also mental salvation. With promises of order, prosperity, and community, Adolph Hitler fulfilled a profoundly spiritual need on behalf of those who converted to Nazism, and thus became not only Führer, but Messiah contends David Redles, who believes that millenarian sentiment was central to the rise of Nazism.
As opposed to many works which depersonalize Nazism by focusing on institutional factors, Redles offers a fresh view of the impact and potential for millenarian movements. The writings of both major and minor Nazi party figures, in which there echoes a striking religiosity and salvational faith, reveal how receptive Germans were to the notion of a millennial Reich such as that offered by Hitler. Redles illustrates how Hitler's apocalyptic prophecies of a coming "final battle" with the so-called "Jewish-Bolsheviks," one that was conceived to be a "war of annihilation," was transformed into an equally eschatological "Final Solution."
Customer Reviews:
Great Book! Relevant to Today's Struggle with Terrorism and Extremists.......2005-11-22
David Redles has written an incredibly insightful book on how people under stress can be manipulated to do horrible things if they believe they will be saved. It is entirely relevant to today's suicide bombers and other extremists looking for salvation. This book is not just for those interested in Hitler and Nazi Germany but for anyone trying to understand how people can commit the kinds of atrocities that continue to occur in our world today.

Customer Reviews:
How this book helped me........1999-08-15
I thought "Legacy of Silence" was a well written book with countless amounts of information. I read it after it was recommended by a Holocaust researcher, while I was doing a report on the Holocaust for school. During the course of my research I read several books and interviewed a Holocaust survivor. "Legacy of Silence" was without question the most helpful of the books I read. "Legacy of Silence" gives the reader a unique insight to the personal lives of Nazi leaders and the inablility of their children to cope with their parents crimes. On many of the book's stories the children seem to recall almost pleasantly the activities of their parents. In my opinion it shows how, while the children of Holocaust survivors actively attempt to understand what their parents went through, the children of the perpetraters try to avoid dealing with their parents sins. I read "Legacy of Silence" shortly after my interview with a survivor. That interview along with "Legacy of Silence" and many other pieces of information have caused me to educate myself on the Holocaust even now that my paper has long since been completed. As a younger American I am trying to understand what happened during that horrible period of human history. If you are like me and want to learn more than what is in the Encyclopedia. Then I encourage you to read "Legacy of Silence".

Book Description
While European commerce in race was substantial, the colonial trade in ideas of race was highly profitable as well. Looking at official propaganda and commercial representations in France during the Third Republic, this book explores the way the French increased the value of their racial identity at home at the expense of their colonized brothers and sisters. The French did not create the identity-effacing stereotypes of Africans, Arabs, and Indochinese. Instead they refined or remolded these images, and as they did so they redefined and remolded their images of themselves. Focusing on world's fairs, colonial expositions, and mundane manufacturers' trademarks, Races on Display shows not only the prevalence of racial stereotypes, but also how complex these representations prove to be.

In recent years, a growing number of citizens have defected from the major parties to third party presidential candidates. During the elections in the past two decades, minor parties like those led by George Wallace and John Anderson, as well as independent efforts such as Ross Perot's 1992 presidential campaign, have attracted more support than at any time since the 1920s.
Third Parties in America explains why and when the two-party system deteriorates and third parties flourish. Relying on data from presidential elections between 1840 and 1992, it identifies the situations in which Americans abandon the major parties and shows how third parties encourage major party responsiveness and broader representation of political interests.

An Amazing and Inspiring Life Story.......2001-02-03
I was devastated when my father told me that he had been diagnosed with Lymphoma. Upon hearing of the diagnosis, well meaning friends often asked how old my father was. Though likely intended to comfort, the query always had the opposite effect. I became inconsolable. That is, until I talked to my dear friend Steve Mikita. He spoke the first truly comforting words I would hear since the diagnosis. He said simply, "Mare, as much as you love your father, Heavenly Father loves him more." As Steve continued to speak, and I continued to weep, peace and comfort flooded my heart. I knew he was right. Whatever the held for my father, for me, it was going to be alright. I have often thought that the world would be a better place if everyone could be so fortunate as to have a friend like Steve Mikita. For those of you who don't know Steve, or who have never had the opportunity to hear him speak, reading his autobiography is surely the next best thing. Here, Steve shares the experiences of his remarkable life which uniquely enable him to empathize with, and to offer true comfort, hope and inspiration to the rest of us. With the support of an incredible family, and a particularly tenacious mother, Steve has endured and continues to endure trials most of us will only ever have to imagine. Though his muscles are weak and continue to atrophy, Steve is truly one of the most powerful men I know. Read his book. It will open your eyes to the as yet unrealized possibilities in your own life.
