The very best pricing manual.......2007-09-23
I bought a second copy of this book after loaning it to too many people to know who had had it last.
The book is not light reading, is highly technical and has more than a little math to comprehend. But, it is worth it.
The strategic thinking is very focused.
If you are stuck on how to price your product or how to combat price competition, read this book.
Looking for guidance/framework on how to price our products ..........2007-03-08
We have the challenge of taking new products and services to the marketplace and really were looking form some guidance on a place to start. The area we are working in is really developing a new market as well. So we were wondering "What Price do we place on these product and services?"
We could not afford the experts on pricing (aka Strategic Pricing Group now part of The Monitor Group). And were looking for a place to start. All research including reviews from Amazon pointed us to start with this book. To myself and our endeavor, it the first 3 weeks of owning the book, I have read several chapters multiple times and the foundation framework on pricing is shares has already proven to be worth many times the price of the book.
On top of it, it is easy to read. Thanks to the people who took the time to make this book.
Great Book.......2007-02-18
This book is a great guide to the topic of pricing. I'm an MBA student and I believe students as well as professionals can benefit from reading this book. It contains structures and frameworks to work out a tailored pricing strategy and they all make sense. Lots of good examples from business practice illustrate the application of the theories.
The book is relatively quantitative for a marketing book, which I find great because there is no argumentation based on psychology and belief, but on quantifiable parameters - one can see the consulting practice of the authors.
What the book pretty much lacks is a citing of new academic research studies of the topics discussed. There are extensive references, however.
All in all a great book to newcomers in pricing as well as experienced pricers.
Excellant........2007-02-11
This is one of the best books in pricing. My Pricing professor recommended that I buy this and said that marketing managers regularly refer to this book in practice. This is a great buy.

Persuasion Master does it again! .......2007-10-22
Once more Dr. Kevin Hogan delivers a quality, content filled power house of a book.
Anyone who wants to understand how to persuade others, do it quickly, and do it so everyone wins, needs to read this book.
Kevin has filled the pages between these covers with high powered proven tools that anyone can apply.
Caution, these tools really do work!
Structured, well explained, practical and... persuasive.......2007-10-04
Do you really want to learn the art of persuasion? This is a trick question - you will understand it after reading the book. I have to say that even after reading it, I do not believe real persuasion is to play a trick on someone. You can fool someone, but in the long run you will get caught and this type of "persuasion" will catch up with you. I am simply not interested in that subject, so I was quite ready to throw the book, if it proved to trumpet the value of tricking someone. The use of the word "trick" in the title is unfortunate, because the book, with a few exceptions, is not a repository of tricks, but a pretty good analysis of successful communication.
The writing is clean and clear. There are no complex theories, statements of advice are explained in a straightforward manner. The reader could appreciate the purposeful style. Although the tactics are listed using a dry numbering system ("Covert Persuasion Tactic #32), they are grouped in chapters following well defined concepts. I thought the authors handled quite well the delicate issues of emotion and belief. One of the positive aspects of the book is that the reader can follow a system to educate new, better communication habits. Some readers could find observations that provoke thinking beyond the simple idea of persuasion.
The authors make an effort to simplify the message of persuasion (they have to persuade you, right?), but they also emphasize the fact that one has to put in more effort in order to get better results. It is about being motivated, knowing what you want and hard work. Some of the more interesting concepts in the book are:
- People don't believe in something because of a specific reason, they just do
- Always be outcome focused, imaging final product
- Avoid mind drifting, which is caused by tiredness
- Focus requires energy
- Anticipate, always anticipate
- Beware when someone else's agenda is on your to-do list
- Communicate with intention
The title and the introduction style do not do justice to the book. It has more depth than it lets you believe. It is better if you take your time and read it slowly - and think about it, rather than skip through it.
Overall, the book is useful, even if you are already familiar with some of the concepts. Occasionally, the book drops the quality by dipping into sales demagogic rhetoric (just ignore that), but considering the size of the covered territory, it has remarkable tempo and interestedness. I am writing this review a month after I read the book and I can say that a few ideas in the book are sticky: they stay with you for a while. That means the book is onto something.
Be A Sales PRO! Read This Book!!.......2007-09-03
Far more than others, Kevin Hogan synthesizes and makes accessible vast amounts of technical and scientific knowlege.....not for the academic, but for the average "sales guy"....those of us who are actually selling and marketing every day and need to know and use this stuff quickly . This is "our" guy. And this stuff works. Its all here. The only thing better is to see him in person! I know. I've read, I've used it, I've been successful with it. Buy this book, read it, do what it suggests, then write Kevin and tell him THANKS.
Lacking in percision.......2007-09-02
Disclaimer: I usually prefer not to speak or write negatively about a given book because I generally do not want to spend the energy required to so. In the case of Covert Persuasion I feel compelled to write a review solely on the basis that I strongly feel this book does not live up to what it purports to give or enable the reader to be able to do. The very title persuades the reader into believing that the forth coming pages contain the necessary wealth of information that will arm the reader with these mysterious and much touted psychological tactics and trick which, when applied, will transform you into a persuasion guru. I contend that this book delivers some of the goods but, falls short of what it could have been and, in the end, is just another tired attempt to market a book/idea in an already saturated and misguided niche (the art or tactics of selling). The author's fall short not because they do not provide statistical data or because they do not provide some sure fire time test listing of persuasion how-to's. Instead, they falls short because they only partially follow through on their attempt to deliver or provide the reader with a full view of any given tactic or trick they are trying to impart upon you. What the authors do is begin a section by telling you what they are attempting to do and how, by the end of this section, you will see or have defined or know how to use said tactic or trick. By section end the reader is left scratching their head wondering and waiting to be given information regarding some trick and, even more annoying, is the author's referencing tactics from a previous section. Maybe the trick or tactic is somehow imparted during the flurry of motivating stories that fill the vast majority of each section or, quite possibly, I was too ignorant to derive the assumed tactic or trick but, regardless of these points, I consistently felt as though is was missing information or that I had fallen asleep during reading and subsequently mis-read a given section and hence I was forced to go back an re-read section after section with the hope of finding all the missing information. Saying that you will defer fully explaining or revealing a trick or tactic until later and then not delivering is like bringing food to a starving person and then eating it yourself. In conclusion, this book does not live up to its title and it was not that helpful as a tool to use in any given situation, especially those where knowing how to apply manipulative subtleties to obtain a desired outcome is needed and important.
The .......2007-09-01
As a former multiple business owner for twenty years and a current business image consultant, I highly value anything written by Dr Hogan about the art of persuasion and influence. Time and again, I have been able to successfully navigate tough business negotiations using the techniques I've learned through Dr Hogan's courses and books. I now have a respectable library of Dr Hogan's material and I am more than excited to add this book to my collection. My husband is an attorney and handles billion dollar contracts and negotiations for the nuclear industry. He actually carries "Covert Persuasion" with him as a reference in his dealings. That says it all!
Anyone who cannot realize the value of the content of this book probably has little real time experience in business dealings.

Ben Hogan's premise in this 1957 classic is driven home in bold letters: "THE AVERAGE GOLFER IS ENTIRELY CAPABLE OF BUILDING A REPEATING SWING AND BREAKING 80." Religions are founded on less, and Hogan's detailed analyses and illustrated demonstrations of grip, stance, posture, and the two basic components of the swing make up a sacred book. Though its very simplicity seems dated, this is the tome of technique that should serve as the foundation of every golf library.
Book Description
The building blocks of winning golf -- from one of the masters of the game.
Ben Hogan, one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport, believed that any golfer with average coordination can learn to break 80 -- if one applies oneself patiently and intelligently. With the techniques revealed in this classic book, you can learn how to make your game work from tee to green, step-by-step and stroke by stroke.
In each chapter, a different tested fundamental is explained and demonstrated with clear illustrations -- as though Hogan were giving you a personal lesson with the same skill and precision that made him a legend. Whether you're a novice player or an experienced pro, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons is a must-have reference for anyone who knows that fundamentals are where champions begin.

Classic Instruction.......2007-10-17
Hogan's lessons are as relevant today as when this book was first written. This is a great instructional tool. Golfers at any level would benefit.
Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf.......2007-10-11
This book is an absolutely must have for any one really committed to improving their golf swing. I read it and improved immediately. Since then I have read it over and over again, always finding some little tid-bit that helps me to play a little better. Don't start another golf season without it!
Essential for the beginner.......2007-10-10
Whether you're a beginning golfer, or need a refresher, Hogan's book is the starting point.
Very good but.............2007-10-07
not as good as How to Build a Classic Golf Swing by Ernie Els. Hogan's book explains in great details the basic to a golf swing. If you learn these basic fundamentals of the swing you will never have a bad swing. The difference in Hogan's book vs. Els' book is illustrations. Els' book does a better job with photos from different angles where Hogan's illustrations are sketches which don't hammer home the points the same. In my opinion I would order both while reading Hogan's book first. Els' book will help you understand the statements made in the first book.
Super Book.......2007-09-26
Super book. If your an experienced golfer or new to the sport this is a must read for establishing the basic fundamentals of the swing.

Book Description
New secrets to getting what you want every time
The Science of Influence shows readers how to get anyone to say "yes" in eight minutes or less. Synthesizing the latest research in the field of influence with real-world tested experiences, it presents simple secrets that help readers turn a "no" into a "yes." Every secret in this book has been rigorously tested, validated, and found reliable academically and in the real world.
Readers learn dozens of all-new techniques and strategies for influencing others including how to reduce resistance to rubble; send unconscious nonverbal messages that are consciously undetectable; make people feel instantly comfortable in your presence; decode body language; build credibility; and be persistent without being a pain.
The Science of Influence turns the enigmatic art of influence and persuasion into a science anyone can master.
Kevin Hogan, PsyD (Eagan, MN), is a dynamic motivational speaker and expert on unconscious influence and body language for the BBC, the New York Post, and such popular magazines as Cosmopolitan and Playboy. He teaches Persuasion and Influence at the University of St. Thomas Management Center. He is the author of 12 books including bestsellers such as Irresistible Attraction: Secrets of Personal Magnetism and The Psychology of Persuasion.

You need to look no further for sales success.......2007-09-23
Whether it's body language, alpha strategies, omega strategies, 10 laws of persuasion, building rapport, self branding, oscillation, covert hypnosis or you just want to be privy to information most other authors would and do span out over 3 or 4 books then this is an absolute must read for you.
Kevin Hogan again delivers where others leave you wanting and does so not in a way that is hard to understand or in a way that leaves you wondering whether it really does work like that but in a way that is completely and wholly backed up with real, provable scientific study and results.
I am not for one minute not to try other authors attempts but what i am saying is that you'll be very hard pushed to find a title with so much usable information in it.

A must read!.......2007-09-19
After reading Psychology of Persuasion, get this book! Kevin Hogan continues to bring new and fresh concepts to you regarding the ability to Influence people. His dedication to the field is unfounded anywhere else.
A Must Read.......2007-09-13
Kevin Hogan is clearly a leading expert on influence and persuasion. He has done it again. This book has a lot of great information in it compiled from the author's own research, various studies and papers.
The author goes into great detail of how we are all influenced daily into making decisions of "yes" or "no" and how both internal and external influences affect those decisions at the conscious and unconscious level of the brain. This is about how to create change in others and we are introduced to the Delta and Omega models of influence. From beginning to end, there are countless examples of persuasion techniques and influence strategies.
I personally like chapter 11 entitled "I'll think about it". If you are in sales and have had a customer response as such, now you will understand why they said it and learn how to influence them to "yes".
Simply, a great book!

Proven Laws Meet Current Research and Applications - Reader Wins!.......2007-09-13
Kevin Hogan presents persuasion, influence and decision making research, liberally sprinkled with real world examples and humor, to break down the turning a "no" into a "yes" process. The "Science" of Influence goes well beyond science to the "art" of persuasion.
The strategies in this book show how to reduce resistance, build credibility, make others more comfortable in your presence, ask the right questions and be persistent without offending the other party. Importantly, this book covers the essentials of nonverbal communication. It also addresses both internal factors (like habits, routines) and external factors (like speaker's appearance, the environment) that affect a listener.
The heart of this book outlines and applies the Ten Laws of Influence. You will want to highlight and periodically revisit these laws and applications.
This book is a must read for sales and marketing professionals and others who persuade for a living, including lawyers. With its coverage of foundational persuasion principles and its incorporation of the latest research, it has much to offer to any student of persuasion and influence. Even the experienced social scientist and persuader will find some new tips or techniques.

An edge on the competition.......2007-09-05
If you would like an extra edge on the competition, buy this book. I don't know all the tricks of the trade but I do want to understand the Science of Influence. After reading this book I changed several little things in my approach and the delivery of my presentation. The little things add up.
You might not know what you are doing to turn your clients against you. The Science of Influence will help you understand what you may be doing wrong. I now remove all negative influencers in all my interactions with my clients. The most powerful key in the book is learning that "no" can be turned into "yes". I know every sales trainer says that, but Kevin shows you the "how" and "why" a No can be turned into Yes. If you are in sales (and who doesn't use influence) you need all the education you can get. Kevin's book should be on your top shelf!

I like the book. It is pretty easy to get through, although it is a bit detailed for my uses. I don't love the book, but I don't hate it either. It is also a bit of a hassle to go back to the Figures that they point you to that aren't on the page you're reading. It would be helpful if it was all there at once, but other than that the book is pretty decent.

Book Description
She was the most outlandish, outrageous, in-your-face symbol of the age - and suddenly, shockingly, she was gone. In life her antics, adventures and behavior kept a nation riveted; in death she stunned a world gripped by the surprise and swiftness of her unexpected passing. The woman was, of course, Anna Nicole Smith. This is the story of the little girl from west of nowhere, born into a broken, dysfunctional, dirt-poor family, told by the one woman who knew her best - her sister. Her fierce resolve, pluck, luck and determination allowed her to claw her way to celebrity status, becoming a tabloid staple, and to reach the potential of unimaginable wealth. And then, in a moment, she was gone, not yet 40 years old. A Horatio Alger story with a bitter ending, TRAIN WRECK- The Life and Death of Anna Nicole Smith, is the definitive story of the rise and swift fall of one of the most compelling characters to blaze across the American sky.

Uhhh what?.......2007-09-28
Luckily I didn't spend money on this book because it gave me a headache just trying to get through the first chapter. The writing is SO BAD. I can't believe she collaborated with someone and this is the best they could do. It jumps around so much and alot of the book has nothing to do with Anna at all. I figure the reason for that is Donna's writing what she knows and she DOESN'T KNOW ANNA. It's all old news and assumptions. I could have written all the "secrets" that are in this book. Most of the photos are of Donna's family which sure they're partially related, but these people don't know Anna.
If you *have* to read this book, do what I did, and go to the library.
grave-robbing at its best... .......2007-09-22
one word: trash. i bought this book because i felt, well, that no one could probably tell us the personality of this strong woman (and anyone who has gone through what anna nicole smith went through is definitely strong). i figured her sister would clue me in about the culture that brought this young woman to a tragic end. i must say, it is not there. this book would probably amount to "gossip" and nothing else. if you want to read everything you have already heard in the media, it is an okay read. if you are curious about anna nicole's life, this book won't offer you much.
Train Wreck.......2007-09-12
I thought this book was very interesting. I have never been a fan of Anna but found this book to be a good read.I now understand Anna a little better and see that she really had a very sad life. If you are a fan or not this is a good book.
Love you Anna!!!!.......2007-09-09
Good book, I ordered it the second it came out. Very nice cover and image, beautiful packaging. Donna Hogan is a decent writer. I think she might have been false on a few things but over all it was good and worthwhile for Die-hard Anna fans like myself. I LOVE ANNA NICOLE!!!!!!! Been her biggest fan since she came out. She is the most beautiful creature to have ever graced this planet and it is a shame she is gone. Rest is Peace Beautiful and keep the books comin!!!!!
"User-Loser".......2007-09-08
Donna Hogan is just exactly what Anna said she was a "user-loser". She is trying to get her 15 minutes by trashing her half sister who she obviously really knows nothing about. Everything she claims to know comes from the media. She is the epitome of "trailer trash" and too ignorant to realize it. She thinks that her own sleeping with married men and whoever else will have her makes her worldly and sofisticated and that her use of Anna's name to further her causes is ok, yet she trashes her half sister who doesn't appear to have done anything worse than she herself has done. I wish I hadn't purchased this book because I hate to think of her succeeding in making money from trashing her dead sister. She is disgusting.

Important and useful resource!.......2007-10-17
Regardless of what industry you work in or what role you currently hold, this book will help you get what you have always wanted and at a time you want to get them. Kevin walks you through the psychology of selling, buying, negotiation and social interaction. His straight forward approach to writing allows you to understand how you can immediately use the strategies described. A truly useful read which answers many questions other books simply leave you with. Superb!
Everyone needs this book!.......2007-09-19
Kevin Hogan is a great storyteller that makes something as complicated as Persuasion techniques seem easy. His humor and dedication to the reader in presenting the information manner that is easy to understand is greatly appreciated. I highly recommend this book to any one trying to gain a competitive edge. The section in the book explaining where to sit in a resturant is worth the price of the book alone! Priceless.
Buy this Master Guidebook for Your Library!.......2007-09-13
As an avid student of persuasion and influence, I'd say this is one of the more readable and comprehensive books on how to communicate with and influence others. It is complete, concise and well written. Kevin Hogan helps you stop thinking "magic" when it comes to persuasion and shows you the who, what, when, where, why and HOW.
If you are in an applied sales profession (entrepreneur, sales, marketing, attorney, etc.), use this book and you will see results in your business. If you simply want to learn how to better persuade and influence in all areas of your life (got kids?!), this book also will show you the way. Have fun as you read and apply to improve your life and relationships.

Great Information - Buy This Book.......2007-09-12
This book is a must read for anyone in sales - period
This is a very well written book. It is a great tool for anyone who makes a living by having to persuade and influence others. Kevin Hogan has a very simplified process with his "Paradigm of Persuasion" approach which is built on a win-win philosophy for both the seller and the customer.
I really like the detail and examples that the author has provided in this book. Dr. Hogan speaks to the "laws" of persuasion and various ethical persuasion techniques. He also describes in detail how non verbal communication and proxemics have a direct impact on the customer's buying decision criteria. This book also goes into great detail on building instant rapport with the customer and how to effectively communicate with the different personality styles.
This book is definitely one, that after you have read it, will become a reference book for years to come.
If you haven't got this book then you are missing out!.......2007-09-10
This book is where it all starts, fills in all the details others miss out and finishes all your curiosity about why and how to influence people.
The 9 laws of persuasion are real gems and can be easily and quickly be placed into any selling environment.
Reciprocity, Expectancy, Consistency the list is one in which you'll want to remember as you will rely on their information for many many years.
I can personally vouch that this book as well as other from Kevin Hogan has literally transformed my selling, my social interaction and career path.
I can not stress how much every person involved in persuading (every one) needs to own a copy of this master piece.

The book had to be renamed: how to become a succesful salespersons.......2007-10-07
I have read most of the book. I won't say that it is useless, but that it is rather disapointing. NLP is a very powerful set of practices for influencing other people. The name of the book is the one thing the author did that succeeded in convincing me to buy this book. The book is mainly about how to become a successful salesperson, almost nothing about other practices of covert hypnosis. Thus the name of the book suggests a wider scope. Throughout the book, the author seem to plant the messages "buy my other stuff" and "use my knowlege", and he seems to do it in a very ineffective way. If at least he was able to use covert hypnosis more effectively for that, the way Bandler and Grider (the original developers of NLP) did, then I would be tempted to believe I can learn a lot more from him.
Yet, the book is not useless. Some of the things written in this book are deep understanding of the selling business.
Quality information, easy read and fun to apply at work........2007-10-06
This is a good book with quality information. Kevin Hogan has written several good books on persuasion. I have read Psychology of Persuasion, Covert Persuasion and Covert Hypnosis in that order. Although a decent amount of the information in this book is covered in Covert Persuasion, there is a substantial amount of new information and tactics that can be applied to many situations in life. Overall this is a nice read for someone that would like to raise the bar at work and elsewhere.
Working in the Formula Race Car of Sales "metaphorically speaking" anything that can give me an edge is worth looking at.
Good job again Kevin
Kevin Hogan Again HITS The Mark.......2007-09-03
Want to IMPROVE Your Life? Be better at your Job? Go deeper in to Kevin Hogans work after reading some of his other books (like Pyschology of Persuasion)? Then this is the logical next step for you....unless you are lucky enough to attend one of his seminars in person! This is the next best thing!!! Because his work is transformational! I wasn't even aware of all the changes taking place in my life until other people started commenting on them...people have even told me that I LOOK different (as in younger and more vibrant), but I AM aware that I am making more money and I am happier!! And it began about two years ago when I started reading and applying Kevin Hogan's work....and Covert Hypnosis is the latest. Read it only if you, too are ready to make life changing leaps forward!!! Ahd then as you apply it, watch for the inevitable changes to occur around you!! You will be glad you did. Don't thank me, thank Kevin.
Here's an OVERT suggestion - SAVE YOUR MONEY!.......2007-08-10
Maybe this book does help becuase I was totally taken in by the marketing hype describing the book.
First, this book has quite a lot of the shortcomings of many self-published books -- rampant typos, grammatical errors and unverifiable testamonials followed by unsubstantiated anecdotes sprinkled with factual errors.
Second, it's regurgitated, dumbed down NLP for the masses.
Third, the information is dated although presented as "new" and "cutting edge".
There are many other books on NLP and body language that are a lot more helpful. Don't buy this book, especially at its inflated price. That's part of the ploy. If it costs so much it must have the "good stuff" in it, right? Wrong!
I'm just very disappointed to be told that I need to lose weight, grow taller and dress for success to get my subliminal message across to make the sale.
A good book for therapists with difficult clients.......2007-06-11
Some people work readily with cognitive behavioral therapy. Some people are happy to try hypnosis. And some people have the troubles they have because they work very hard to hang onto the psychological mindsets that bring them about. Covert hypnosis has many good ideas for using language to heighten suggestibility and covertly implant suggestions that would not be accepted if presented overtly. On the whole, this looks like a method of turning a conversation into a long-form induction, except that there isn't an explicitly denoted conversion to hypnosis.
I am a certified hypnotist, but I'm a customer service agent by trade. I purchased this manual after reading the author's Psychology of Persuasion. I had hoped this would offer a more in-depth look at the communication strategies discussed in that book, and have not found this manual as helpful in that regard. If you are a therapist or work with people in other settings where wide-ranging, extended conversation is a given, this manual offers lots of good suggestions for guiding the conversation, all the way to planting suggestions for those resistant to change in a therapeutic setting. But if you're in sales, customer service or another profession where shorter interactions are the rule, I'd recommend the Psychology of Persuasion instead.

Excellent Study Guide! Ace your tests.......2007-08-31
This book is an excellent resource for nursing students especially if you are needing practice with nclex style questions or focusing in on specific items to study. For instance, it has items tagged NCLEX and almost invariably these items ended up on most of my unit and final exams. With so much info to know this definitely helped me hone in on the most important pieces. It is written in outline format, it is easy to read and the extra test questions are excellent.
Freshman Nursing Student.......2007-01-20
This book is great for reviewing Fundamentals of Nursing Freshman I (Level 1) Nursing. I used it to review for my final and for perioperative nursing. It has an outline, pre and post tests, as well as NCLEX questions and a CD with more questions. I just bought Medical-Surgical by the same author!!! I will probably buy the next set for L&D, Peds, and Psych if they have them available. Thank you for a wonderfully written study tool.
Great choice!.......2004-02-10
If you have to get ready for your NCLEX or just simply overview Nursing Fundamentals area - this book is a Bible of Fundamentals, short, easy to read and retain, perfect tool!

It's a top pick .......2007-09-08
The first edition of PRACTICE OF SYSTEM AND NETWORK ADMINISTRATION covers modern IT methodology, and this updated second edition provides a revision of four major areas of knowledge relating to system administration, reviewing key elements of successful network systems, how to build and run reliable services, building data centers and addressing security issues, and more. It's a top pick for any library serious about catering to advanced web programmers, computer professionals, and students of network administration - as well as for practicing administrators.

Awesome!.......2005-02-08
The Practice of System and Network Administration shows you how to become a great SA.
This is no 'for dummies' book.
The Practice of System and Network Administration is a great guide.
Awesome!.......2004-10-11
I agree with some of the worse reviews: This book addresses all the touchy-feely stuff not found in other manuals.
That, however, is what it's for (It's plainly stated on the book! Read the friendly Meta-Manual!) and it
is in fact a wonderfully lucidly written cornucopia of information in that field. It also is delightfully platform-independent, even if it is perceivable that the authors have a UNIX background (but which Sysad doesn't?).
It's a simple fact that Sysads get other things wrong more often than the tech stuff: Communicating changes, seeing it all from the user's POV, negotiating (yes, they deal with salary, too), saying "yes" so that it isn't understood as "yes to all"; saying "no" so that it isn't understood as "fsck you!".
That's why we're often hated as arrogant BOfHs. This manual endeavours to fix that, and it just might succeed.
A Mentor in a Book.......2004-08-30
The book market is flooded with books that will tell you all about the technical details of administering various software products and operating systems. Their scope is usually limited to whatever technical product is being written about and they become outdated as quickly as the technology becomes outdated. This book is very different. It gives guidelines in a very readable, coaching style, that can be applied to many different aspects of the System Administration trade.
I have been a System Administrator for a few years now, but this book clarifies many of the issues that I work with daily. It's like a having a mentor on my bookshelf that I can pull down and consult for advice. I especially like the whole section of seven chapters dealing with different aspects of management. These chapters should be mandatory reading for every SA -- and their bosses.
The book is written in a very readable style and has many useful and insightful real-world examples that show that the authors have been around and learned a lot on the way. The book is worth reading just for these examples. I read the book from cover to cover.
I first heard about this book when I attended a seminar Tom Limoncelli
taught at the 2003 LISA conference titled "Time Management for System Administrators: How to Keep from Going (More) Crazy". Many of the topics in the seminar are covered in detail in the book.
If you're a system administrator, you should read this book.
Best book in its class........2002-11-11
If you are looking for a fundamentals book on Unix or Windows 2000 operating systems, go elsewhere. This book is completely about the methodologies for architecting, running and maintaining your IT data center. It's the best book in its class hands down.
