Product Description
The Peaceful Pill Handbook is the controversial, ground-breaking new book from Australian end-of-life physician Dr Philip Nitschke. The Peaceful Pill Handbook for the first time offers a comparative analysis of end of life approaches comparing the peacefulness and reliability of methods such as the purchase of Pentobartibal Sodium (Nembutal) in Mexico, the manufacture of the homemade Peaceful Pill, the use of Helium and Exit bag, the prescription drug Propoxyphene, and the Swiss option offered by the Dignitas service in Zurich. Currently subject to a censorship hearing in Australia and New Zealand, The Peaceful Pill Handbook offers a succinct, scientifically-grounded guide to end-of-life options, voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide.

For those of us who wish to decide for ourselves.......2007-10-11
This is an important contribution spelling out the practical options for those of us who would prefer to decide for ourselves when it is time to go.
At 68 my only fear is to find myself one day in a position where I would prefer not to be, and unable to do anything about it. Officious politicians and bureaucrats may well think they know what is best for us, but I beg to differ as far as my own case is concerned: I would just hate to be kept alive against my own wish, just to satisfy some legislation. The authors of this book are to be commended for their sensitive and sensible presentation of the options available to me, and how I can prepare for the day when I might need to avail myself of one of them.
Clear and honest.......2007-07-12
Needless to say this is a book that would appeal to a limited audience, and people who do not agree with its principles should simply not read it. It is clearly written, very practical and answers questions candidly. The book is not concerned with the ethics behind the advice; clearly the authors assume that people who consult the book have already dealt with the morality of suicide. The authors repeatedly reiterate that the book is aimed at those who are critically ill. I am not critically ill, nor am I in any way impaired. However, I think such information should be available to the public and I commend the authors for their courage in providing it.
Exit choices........2007-07-04
A very useful book for those who are determined not to linger in nursing homes waiting to die or to continue suffering when the debit side of their life's balance sheet exceeds the credit.
Although written by Australians (at least Dr. Nitschke is an Ozzie), our government in its wisdom? has prohibited its sale here.
Seems our religious right is not far behind that of the States'.
John Starr.
Dying with dignity information.......2007-04-10
This book is very well written and gives you information on how you can die with dignity in case of incurable, progressively debilitating diseases, without enduring excruciating pain.

Painful Read - Returned It.......2007-10-22
I found this book very difficult to read. It wasn't the level of the technical information but sentences that are just horribly written. It felt more like a transcription of somebody's poorly though out presentation. I ended up returning it and buying another XNA book (by Joseph Hall)
OK for the first book on XNA.......2007-09-29
I only made to about Chapter 8 on this book, I got sidetracked and needed more specific info.
At first I wasn't a fan of the test driven development style used in the book, but as I read through I realized it was just Ben's style of implementing everything as a delegate that I didn't really care for. I think his approach is a nice mix of "build a game from a book" and Frank Luna's approach of "single concept" examples, although I think the "single concept" approach is still more clear.
My biggest complaint is that there is almost no attention paid to collision detection. This is a complaint I have with almost all 3D game development books. Authors seem to want to gloss over it, most likely, because they don't really understand it. There are other full texts out there showing you how to do collision, but it would be nice for once for someone to write a book on game development and include some decent source and maybe a chapter or two towards the subject.
Some neat stuff, but a flawed book overall.......2007-09-24
I got this book with high hopes, but found it to be lacking. If you want to follow what is written in the book directly you won't even be able to compile the first lesson! A large chunk of code is missing and the project will not compile without it being added (the keyboard.IsKeyDown bit will give you an error)! No CD is included, but if you go download the source from the website you can fill in the missing holes and follow along a bit, but I don't think many people buy programming books for large chunks of unexplained code. It just gets worse from there.
The emphasis on unit tests is also frustrating considering the book is billed as focusing on XNA programming.
That said, the book contains some useful info for a new game programmer, however I could not recommend it as a solid book on the subject.
Agree with other disatisfied readers.......2007-09-06
I was really looking forward to this book and went and picked it up the first day it was available at our local software bookstore. After trying to go through it several times now, I am dissapointed. I agree with what most of the other disatisfied reviewers are saying. My two biggest complaints are his insistance on using unit testing (many of the code examples actually in the book are unit tests, not actual game programming code), and lack of having all the code not in the book.
If you like to read some code, type it, and then hear its explanation, this book is not for you.
Wait for one of the newer XNA books.......2007-08-23
Although it is not a bad book, it does not cover game programming using the XNA environment well. Frequently the author uses this book to press the ideas of doing unit testing and other specific game programming ideas that he has rather than teach about how to understand and really use XNA to program games. Also the code snipets are frequently hard to follow as he frequently neglects to mention where in the files he places the code (to follow, you must download his code and search it to find where everything it).
Currently started reading 'Microsoft's XNA Game Studio Creaters Guide' and so far I think it covers the hows to using XNA better.

more content, less passion, please!.......2001-03-27
I like this book. Or, rather, I *really* like everything thatcomes after page 68. The first 68 pages, however, gives us anot-so-brief overview on the history of ribbonry in fashion ....We're also treated to beautiful photos of the author's work, whereI've discovered her love for the combination of pink and green.... but as the title of this book states _A PASSION for Ribbonry_,perhaps the purpose of this book was to talk about the author'sdevotion to ribbons and ribbonwork.
The rest of the book dealsmostly with flowers, and I find the instructions to be very clear, with clear photos illustrating each step. I like Ms. Nitschke'sinstructions; I first encountered her in Threads Magazine, in herarticle on cockades. There is also a quilt featuring the flowers onthe quilt blocks. There are also brief instructions on other ribbontreatments, specifically gathering and pleating.
Would I buy anotherbook by this author? Probably. Would I refer to this book often?Again, probably. I really like the creative possibilities she showsutilizing the ribbon flowers, and the instructions are clear andsimple.
A Passion for Ribbonry.......2000-04-23
I think this is a wonderful book. I have most of the books on ribbon flowers and each one has something to offer that the other doesn't have. The instructions are very good and easy to follow. Camela gets into ribbon folding techniques that are not in the other books and I find that very interesting and useful in decorating. She gives directions for more unusual flowers and these are very nice to use in mixed floral bouquets. This beautiful book is a must for any one that loves to do ribbon flowers.
Wonderful feast for the eyes........1999-11-06
This is a wonderful book, I do not care if all history is correct, I have received many hours of enjoyment just looking at the wonderful pictures and the flowers I made went together quickly and the directions were easy to follow. That is why I buy this type of book.
beautiful photographs and very interesting.......1999-07-16
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. Of all the ribbon books I own this one is the one I love to make flowers from. I will buy the other books by Ms.Nitschke.
Gorgeous book and easy directions!.......1998-11-06
Ribbon flowers are just fascinating to me. I have seen quite a few books on the subject, but my favorite is "A Passion for Ribbonry". Camela has included beautiful flowers and concise directions. I have completed several of the flowers (starting with the cabochon rose) and have found the directions complete and easy to follow. I am very pleased with the natural look of all the flowers. Some of the other ribbon books produce flowers which look crushed and old, but not this one! Plus, she doesn't confuse you with formulas. I would highly recommend "A Passion for Ribbonry" for a beginner or a more experienced sewer. Way to go Camela! Great job!
Customer Reviews:
I really enjoyed this book and learned more about art........1998-11-29
This is a well-written and informative book. The instructions are clear and allow a novice to complete many of the creations. A book like this gives readers hours of enjoyment; plus you can learn a skill. I feel that Mrs. Nitschke is a creative genius and thank her for her hard work in compiling this book.
I highly recommend this book to readers who want to be creatively challenged.
A great Christmas gift for your artistic friends.
It's great!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1998-11-29
A "Christmas Ribbonry" is a wonderful book. The ornaments are so different! The one that initially caught my eye was the galette on page 40. I ran out and bought ribbon to make it. It did take some time, but after it was finished I had the most adorable little "cookie". The directions were very clear as were the illustrations. What a beautiful house where all the pictures were taken!
I can't wait to start on another Christmas ornament. What's also nice is that there are ideas in it to create useful decorations throughout the year. For instance, you can make covered boxes in pastels for Sringtime.
Thanks for making my holiday a little more special. I highly recommend this book and give it five stars plus!

All about wonder.......2003-02-16
This is a philosophy book along the lines of Descartes' meditations. The author has not divorced his personal identity from his logic. The title seems a bit misleading, but probably intentionally so. Nitschke wants to be sure no one mistakes his desire to put passion back in philosophy. Perhaps Nitschke has reworked 'dispassionate knowledge' into 'silent orgasm.' Dispassionate knowledge seems safe and familiar. The same cannot be said for 'silent orgasm,' but how different are the two terms?
Nitchke asks if we can ever separate knowledge and passion. Prior to Kant and the rise of university philosophers, the passions were always understood to be essential to the search for knowledge. Descartes names wonder as the first of the passions, a prerequisite for any learning. The passion of wonder has always been described by scientists and mathematicians as the heart of their experience of knowledge. Philip Fisher in the Vehement Passions claims a similar role for anger, fear, grief, and shame. Thus Nitschke's comments are in stark contrast to the idealism of Plato and Kant, where the passions preclude clear thought and 'true' knowledge.
Nitschke evokes an understanding of knowledge in terms of meditation, but illuminates 'meditation' in active and passive forms. Using the metaphor of 'hunting', he suggest mankind has long had two styles of seeking knowledge. The hunter can 'chase' the prey or 'be still' and let the prey come to the hunter. Examining these two methods of hunting knowledge, their reliance upon each other and apparent differences, occupies most of the book.
Rather than focus on 'knowledge' as an object or fact, Nitschke grounds his comments upon an assumption that our personal nature cannot be frozen or objectified for personal study. Thus, the existence of the unknowable must be accepted as one of the 'knowns'. The gap between known and unknowable becomes the hunting ground for knowledge. He reviews the Vedanta, Bardo, Yoga and Zen models of consciousness and then contrasts them with Western models. He finds the Western models delusionary.
With the Western models cast aside in favor of a more dynamic and individualized sense of knowledge, Nitschke begins a somewhat Socratic discussion of the relationship between knowledge and orgasm, using tantric ritual for road signs along the journey.
Book Description
Nature crafted by man
The Japanese garden, like all gardens, is more than mere nature; it is nature crafted by man. It needs the hands of the designer to give it meaning. The Japanese garden belongs to the realm of architecture; at its best, it is nature as art. The phases of its history document the constant redefinition of man's position within and towards nature. Its changing forms respond both to socio-economic developments and to religious and philosophical trends, and thereby reflect the spiritual climate in which its architecture was conceived.
At the same time as detailing the characteristics distinguishing and differentiating each of the five major epochs in the history of the Japanese garden, the author identifies the common motif which underlies them all: the recurrent attempt to unite beauty as natural accident and beauty as human-perfected type, to achieve an aesthetic symbiosis between the seeming randomness of natural form and the strict geometry of the right angle.
Customer Reviews:
Man's search for his place in nature is a search for himself.......2006-05-12
"...our earth is both a living and conscious entity. . .when a human being becomes conscious of himself as part of the earth, and of the earth as part of the universe, so the universe itself thereby becomes conscious of itself. . . enlightenment. . .consciousness becoming aware of itself.
At this delicate moment... a flower opens in the "garden" of the universe."
Japanese Gardens is a 239 page historical visual spiritual odyssey through man's interpretation of nature in confined space. Chapter subheadings focus atmosphere: Gardens as mindscapes, Gardens as subsitutes for travel, Gardens of seclusion, Gardens of austerity, Gardens of joy.
Drawings, b/w and color photos illustrate the history and evolution of Japanese garden design.
The book Intimate Spaces by Joe Earle, exclusively color photographs of spiritual gardens, is a fine complement to Nitschke's book with it's comprehensive written text.
Video sources of garden inspiration can be seen in movie backgrounds: Shogun (5 disc 12 hour miniseries on DVD with extra disc explaining tea ceremony, geisha, samurai), Sayonara (tiny household garden, public garden spaces), The Last Samurai (community as garden, cherry blossom garden), Memoirs of a Geisha (cherry blossom garden).
Actual Japanese Gardens to visit: Japanese Garden San Francisco, Japanese Garden Portland Oregon, Hakone Garden (site of filming of Memoirs of Geisha) Saratoga Village (south of San Francisco) California.
Thoughtful quiet moving book.

Timeless Classics - Very Romantic!.......2002-03-08
If you are a Romantic who loves tradition you will definitely like this book. Full of beautiful color photographs and wonderful ideas for making your wedding "special"
Not Worth The Money.......2001-01-08
I was disappointed in this book. I found the ideas in the book very old fashioned and most often ugly. Th only good thing about the book is at the back of the book she shows how to make each seperate flower. But the craft ideas are a DEFINITE pass.
Beautiful Book.......2000-04-07
What a beautiful book! Great ideas for the bride to be. There are many ideas in this book that I'd love to incorporate into my own wedding planning. You may want to practice the ribbon styles to perfect them before your big day! ... it's a book that definitely stands above the overcrowded "wedding day planning" section of the book store.
