Book Description
A Revolutionary War novel with a difference
When Colonel Joseph Kershaw leaves Camden, South Carolina, to lead the American rebels in their struggle against the British, he leaves his son Joey behind as the man of the house. But what can a 13-year-old do when General Cornwallis comes into town and makes the Kershaws' home his headquarters, and begins hanging American prisoners in the family garden? Joey is determined to get revenge--even if he has to risk everything.
"Finely crafted, the book offers a potent message, unfettered by moralizing, about war." --Kirkus Reviews

politically correct.......2007-04-25
This book was very ...modern. The characters were stilted stereotypes, the reasons for the comflict from either side were mentioned only breifly in passing. The ending was predictable and the book had the feeling that the author crammed in every politically correct topic that she could think of. Even throwing in remarks on topics that have absolutly nothing to do with what is going on in either dialogue or action. All in all it seems to have been written to showcase modern political correctness rather than history.
It was amazing!!.......2002-06-08
At first, when my 6th grade Social Studies teacher told us we were going to read The Keeping Room I was thinking "Oh great, a book that we're going to have to do work on." I wasn't too excited. About the time we had gotten to the end of the first chapter I had already picked out my favorite character and wanted to keep going. Of course my favorite character was none other than Euven, Joey's Quaker teacher. Joey's dad, Colonel Kershaw, went off to protect Camden, South Carolina. But General Cornwallis showed up with his men. Camden decided to surrender. Euven tells Joey that there are both good and evil men on both sides of the war, but Joey doesn't want to believe it. But sure enough he meets a man on the British's side who is a good man. Captain Harkins, one of the few nice men on the British side, protects Joey from harm caused by the other soldiers. But, try as Captain Harkins might, Joey refuses to become friends with him. I learned that anyone living in the times of the Revolutionary War would have had problems with the British. I also learned that no matter what happens never give up. Joey kept going and he never gave up because he wanted to prove to his father he could do it. But Joey finds out no matter how old, wise, or nice someone is, it doesn't mean they're always right.

Yet another fine work of historical fiction from Myers........1997-10-01
In her latest offering of historical fiction for young people, Myers (Fire in the Hills, Red Dirt Jessie, Spotting the Leopard) once again paints a thought-provoking picture of a long-ago time and place while showing that many things, including relationships with family and friends, and above all, feelings, have not changed very much at all. In The Keeping Room, Myers presents an unforgettable coming of age story set during the American Revolution. Young Joey Kerhsaw longs for his beloved father, who is fighting against the English during the American Revolution. When Colonel Kershaw is captured, and the British under General Cornwallis take over the Kerhsaw home to use as their headquaters, Joey is devestated and is determined to strike back by killing a redcoat; his vengence and hatred toward the British cause one of the few good men serving under Cornwallis to be killed; Joey learns that there are good and bad men on both sides but it is too late: the damage is done. As the book closes in two thought-provoking letters between father and son, the reader realizes that Joey's opinions of slavery and war are forever changed. Joey and his family will stay with the reader long after the last page is turned.
Book Description
This exuberant picture book tells the story of Tony, a little boy who helps his father in the family pizzeria. “The scenes are full of visually boisterous activity, with under-pinnings of humorous detail and a clear sense of family closeness so important to the story. A decidedly fresh-looking book.”--Booklist

My kids' favorite book!.......1999-08-30
After a hundred readings, this is still our children's favorite book
Excellent!.......1999-01-16
My kids adore this book. It's a very quick read--you can zip right through the short, meaty text. Yet the message is profound. Nino the pizza-maker closes down his cheerful little pizzeria and builds a big, fancy restaurant. He makes lots of money, but sacrifices precious time with his family, comes home exhausted and no longer enjoys his work. Saddest of all, he neglects his little son Tony, formerly known as his "best helper." Fortunately, Nino quickly realizes his mistake. He leaves the big restaurant behind and reopens his beloved pizzeria...renaming it after his son. It's amazing how the author manages to tell this whole story in so few words, and the vibrant, colorful artwork perfectly captures the characters' emotions. This book is a winner!

Good book in a small package!.......2001-08-16
I got this book, inspired by reading The Red Tent. Although it has writings about people who lived long after that wonderful book, the Desert Fathers and Mothers seem to be descendants of those depicted in the Old Testament.
It starts off with the solitary Andrew (circa 241 - 356 AD), whose wisdom was sought by many ("Who will not lie after the commission of a sin, through the wish to escape notice? As we would not commit carnal sin while we are looking at one another, so if we record our thoughts as though about to tell them to one another, we shall more easily keep ourselves free from vile thoughts through shame. So let what we write take the place of the eyes of our fellow hermits. Then blushing as much as if we had been caught, we may never think of what is unseemly.)
There is the story of Maria and Abraham, niece and uncle. An orphaned Maria grew up in the desert praying and learning Scripture, but was seduced by a monk. She fled to the city where she became a prostitute -- Abraham searched for her for two years, found her and -- well, you can read the story in the book.
Also stories of the Two Wise Women (yes!), a monk named Maria, more stories on monks (Abbas) and chapters with advices on prayer, judging others and the goal of discipline. These read much like little stories, and remind me very much of stories told in Sufi Tales.
Very good book in a very small package!

Soulful Introduction to a Longing Soul.......2000-04-29
Many thanks to the publisher for providing this very accessible introduction to the spiritual writings of Augustine of Hippo. The fourteen selections carry just enough of the flavor of this thinker to whet the reading desire of those who have shied away from Augustine and yet, the selections are fresh so that those familiar with Augustine's work (the Confessions, City of God) will also find themselves longing to renew their contact with this seminal Christian from North Africa.

Thank you for this touching book.......2006-11-08
A few years ago I was a neighbor of Teresa McClain-Watson, and her husband told me about this book. I was caught up right from the beginning - the strong language and emotions - tied to locations that I knew in my hometown made it hard to put down. Thank you for this compelling, readable novel. I really enjoyed it.
If you want to be moved...read this book.
Heartbreakingly, achingly good!.......2000-04-08
How this woman was able to take on the voice of a 13-year-old kid from the inner city just amazes me. This book deserves to get a lot more attention that it has. It stayed with me long after I was finished, and I shed more than one tear along the way. Teresa McClain-Watson had me wanting to adopt this kid!
For boys with no daddies.......1999-12-19
I am a teacher who plans on teaching this book to high school students. When I read an excerpt from Chapter Two to 10th graders, they were hungry for more. Though this book may be scorned by some parents because of its use of profanity, it is a raw revelation of a young teenager's inner feelings towards a dad who rejected him. The protagonist's feelings are complex and often he is torn by an inner conflict that must infect most boys who yearn for their daddies' love. A MUST!
Plenty Good Room is an excellent first novel!.......1999-08-26
I thought Plenty Good Room was magnificent. The characters made me laugh, cry and remember. Poor Bay Dawson tried so hard! But, alas, his reunion with his father was not as he had hoped. Teresa McClain-Watson is an excellent writer. I enjoy the book thoroughly!
McClain-Watson understands the pain of rejection!.......1999-08-26
I absolutely loved Plenty Good Room! The author made sure that the reader understood the pain the protaganist was going through. Excellent book. Would recommend it to everyone!
Book Description
Don't Just Stand There delivers! Written by a husband and wife team, this guidebook outlines everything an expectant father needs to know to navigate the big day. Dads get clear direction on what to bring, how to calm and soothe, what to say and, more important, what to definitely not say. A chapter on the stages of labor makes it easy to track what's happening when, while blank lists provide space for mom to fill in her personal preferences ahead of time. With witty illustrations and confidence-inspiring advice throughout, it's an essential for the expecting.
Customer Reviews:
Funny, funny, funny.......2007-06-13
A must have for the soon to be dad. My husband would have benefited. Let's just leave it there. Highly recomended!!
Wish they had this a few years ago.......2007-06-06
This book is really well written, both voices (the mom- and dad-to-be). As a man, I think the guy stuff is very funny. I think this book deserves to be read, since I didn't know of anything like this -- certainly nothing written for the man's perspective -- when my wife (and I) were going through pregnancy.
The design is very pleasing. I think the compact size and round corners give it a handbook feel -- I can picture putting it into a bag much easier this way. The illustrations are fun, unique, and complement the layout really well. Good typography... all of which sets a soothing tone.
