Curt Sampson is once again great and meticulous with the details.
He loves the games and its immortal characters.
This is a great golf history book.
The coming about of the greatest rivalry in golf between Palmer and Nicklaus is well detailed here. Ben Hogan, already the greatest golfer of his generation, seemed to be reaching out for his last glory.
It seems that the sport is no longer as elegant as it once was because the characters are no longer as heroic as they once were.
Highly recommended and a very good book to read over and over.
Down Golf's Nostalgia lane.......2001-09-03
Curt Sampson has ably resurrected the magic of golf in 1960, the famous year in which Palmer became King, Nicklaus loomed, and Hogan and Snead made last runs at majors. Reading this tale one is transported back to what seems to us nostalgically as a simpler time. For a golf nut it is so much fun to relive those dramatic events. I would have given this book 5 stars except John Feinstein has demonstrated what a 5-star golf book is really like (The Majors, A Good Walk Spoiled). Sampson does not quite write with the same level of detail and insight as Feinstein, and lapses a bit more into the rehashing of familiar stories, but he is still quite good.
Just A Great History of one of Golf's Turning Points.......2001-05-25
Only on the fringe of my teenage years in 1960, Sampson marvelously chronicles this year in golf and society. Society we all know because of the revolution that was gaining momentum.
TV is growing and would play a major role in golf's history as well. Along with three individuals, Hogan, Palmer and Nicklaus.
The "y" in the road is the televised Open at Cherry Creek, when Palmer made the celebrated charge. Hogan tries but comes short, and Nicklaus, not knowing for sure his position, didn't really grind, or he likely would have tied. Palmer wins, the sport grows, and as fate seemed to dictate, the game is on the way to the marvelous heights we now see it occupy.
Reading this wonderful book, it gives one more insight and compassion into those early pioneers who made it what it is. Today's pros seemed so pampered, however, the stress is large and looming larger.
Sampson is articulate writer and delivers great insights: Hagen's saying to Sarazen before the shot heard round the world at Augusta: "Come on, hurry up, I've got a date tonight."; and Gary Player calls up Hogan for some advice on his swing, so Hogan asks, whose clubs do you play? When Player answers Dunlop, Hogan responds, "Ask Mr. Dunlop."
Empathy for those like Sampson who wrote passionately about the game and didn't really make a living, let alone get rich. Loved the story about Bob Drum being snubbed by his paper until they hear Palmer is leading The Open, then cable him to send a story. Upon receipt of telegram, Drum crumbles it into ball, and said: "Hope to hell you get it."
This is a must for any serious golf collection of books on the game.
One of the greatest golf books ever, back in print........2000-10-12
I've read a lot of golf books. This is one of my favorites, and I'm glad to see it's finally back in print--there are a lot of golfers I need to recommend this to. It's more just plain fun to read than almost any one I can name. One of golf's great years, and one of the sport's all-time great cast of characters: Hogan, past his prime at 48 but trying to win one more major; Arnie, the greatest golfer of the 50s, trying to win the Grand Slam; 20-year-old Nicklaus, the chunky college kid; and plenty of other characters, like the irascible Charlie Sifford, the first black player on the tour; the legendary Sam Snead; Chi Chi Rodriguez, who weighed 118 pounds; party animal Doug Sanders; Gary Player, the Man in Black from South Africa; and several others. Reading about these guys is just fascinating, they come alive in this book, and the story of how several of them could have and should have won the Open is one of the best in golf. Sampson has a breezy, highly readable style and has a good sense of humor. I highly recommend this book to any fan of golf.

If you are at all interested in Jack Nicklaus and can't, by time or distance, visit his museum in Columbus, Ohio (on the campus of Ohio State University), then this book will be a nice visual replacement. Well organized, this book follows Jack's entire career as well as his relationships with his teacher, Jack Grout, his parents Charlie and Helen Nicklaus and his wife Barbara. Especially nice are several pages of reproduced "mementos" in cellophaned envelopes for easy retrival and review.
I would recommend this book highly to all golfers who have any admiration for the Golden Bear.
A "Must" for Those Who Admire The Golden Bear.......2007-05-01
It sounds "trite" and simple to say it, but this book is a "must" for those who love golf and admire the qualities Jack Nicklaus brought to the game, talent, work ethic, competitiveness, success, and class. The epitome of what the game is meant to be.
There are other, more indepth, books on Jack Nicklaus, but this one has it all, enough to appreciate the man, who is, what he stands for and his journey, a journey that has been a credit to the game of golf and has inspired many of us who have followed his career and the values and principles he has demonstrated so effectivly.
There are many replica mementos, a letter from Tiger Woods, copies of his scorecards, Masters invitations and such that give this book a nice touch, a nice feel. Overall it is a comprehensive keepsake album of Jack, his career and the game of golf in his day.

I heard about this book after having played golf for 12 years. I wish I had gotten it back when I first started. It has all the basic fundamentals one should know and is very easy to read and apply to your game. The book helped me understand the golf swing much better and in more detail then ever before. For the price you must get this book.

I used the original parts of this book as released by Golf Digest in the 70's and later. This book is updated and includes essential components covering all aspects of the basics and beyond. Nicklaus is excellent at describing the comprehensive components of the golf swing in general and with the various situations you'll find yourself in around the course.
Jack Nicklaus isn't usually thought of as one of the all time great instructors, but his constant attention throughout his life to the game, the swing, the equipment and to instructors, means that he has a "Top 10" ability as an instructor to get the ideas across clearly, and to help you avoid pitfalls. Many instructors are just not so fully aware of the scope of the related issues. Jack had to. He had to play and his intention was to win. Nothing was left to guesswork.
I find that Nicklaus' description of the full swing is essential to understanding the various points in the swing IN MOTION. He doesn't need gadgets, he uses diagrams and sketches to show you. He's always dealing with how one thing leads to another. The golf swing is not just the person, it's weight shift, the club in relation to the hands, the path of the club, and a few abstract concepts that Nicklaus is excellent at keeping clear and meaningful.
I HIGHLY recommend this book to all golfers who have handicaps greater than about 2. Take these instructions, run them through 100 shots on the course and realize how a leading, proven, brilliant golfer and instructor can point out a few things that could help you. For anyone starting the game, for anyone who has reached a sticking point and can't seem to improve, and for those who want to have more fun and just hit the ball cleanly more and don't really worry about the score......all of you will gain a great deal by getting the information in this book.
Women: Nicklaus deals with the game of golf and the swing from the basics onward. I've seen plenty of women golf and an really happy with the LPGA quality. Get this book and take it to the practice range and then take notes onto the course. Nicklaus has a well-balanced approach to the entire game and he communicates brilliantly. If you find something that he says doesn't quite match how you swing or something like that, at least you have bounced an idea of the all-time greatest player, and then when you talk to another instructor who can deal with you personally, you have a FAR CLEARER idea of some issues you can improve and how to deal with them. So, no, Nicklaus' book, for women, isn't 100% applicable, but I'd bet it's at least 95% applicable! His approach is so time-tested and he is very well informed about all aspects of the swing, the clubs, the variety of people's swing styles, builds, the equipment and the situations on the course that you can't go wrong here.
Great Book!.......2005-08-19
I started golfing last summer with the aid of a co-worker to help get me started. Once school started back up I found myself going to the driving range much more often the he could meet me there for guidance; I knew that if I wanted my game to progress I would either need to find another trainer or turn to a book. Concidering this book is less then 20$ and a trainer can be around 100$ a session, I opted for the book.
Immediatley after taking suggestions from grip, stance, swingplane, and posture my game improved immensley. My slice is now undercontrol and I get an extra 20 yrds out of my irons. The book has helpfull illustrations that really put some of the dynamics of this game into perspective.
I recomend this to anyone who is trying to either start golfing or even for avid golfers who are trying to tweak there play styles and shake some bad golf habits. This book has truly been a golf blessing.

This "coffee table" style book works for me because of my passion for golf and my love for famous golf courses. Linda Hartough may be the best landscape artist I've seen in rendering these classic courses with the precision of modern day photography.
What I really got out of this book was a memory recollection of playing a majority of these courses. Looking at these paintings I was thrown into the distant memory of playing Pebble Beach, Olympic Club (Lake Course), Carnoustie, St. Andrews (Old Course), Royal Lytham, Royal Birkdale, and Royal Troon. It was like de ja vu all over again!
Also worth checking out are the Augusta National paintings. This might be her finest work. I especially liked her work on hole #'s 10,11,12, and 15. Augusta is the best course in the world. Second to none.
If Linda Hartough ever publishes paintings of the century old courses of Ireland, in particular the courses designed by Old Tom Morris and Alister Mackenzie; I will buy it. I would really like to see her render and paint the "classic" Irish courses of Ballybunion, Lahinch, Ardglass, Royal Portrush, Newcastle, and Royal County Down. Those classic links style courses are some of the finest on the earth.

Hallowed Ground is a beautiful book, capturing spectacular locations from the greatest courses in both America and the United Kingdom.
Included in this hardback collection of art by Linda Hartough is the fabled 7th hole at Pebble Beach, and many holes from Augusta National's Amen Corner. Pieces on each course by Jaime Diaz highlight battles that have taken place on the fairways, and give life to the paintings as showdowns on 18th greens are described.
What makes this book interesting is that when you see the life-like paintings and read about the classic golf that has gone on in that scene, you are able to put yourself in the picture. It is amazing to be able to watch the final round of the 1981 US Open just by reading this book.
To a true fan of golf, or anyone who loves a good coffee table book, Hallowed Grounds is a perfect edition to your collection. Buy this book today, and put yourself in the picture!

I was fortunate to have the Golf Channel on a few months ago. Linda Hartough, the artist featured in this book was on with a few of her originals. I immediately purchased the book. After browsing the book 3 or 4 times, taking in her breathtaking artwork, I decided to read a few of the writings by Jaime Diaz on some of my favorite courses. The writings are as enjoyable as the artwork. This book should become required reading for anyone playing the game, especially for golfers new to the game. I am building quite a collection of golf instruction books, but I keep going back to Jack's when I want to cut through the confusion. I am going to order another copy for my twin brother who has recently come back to the game after a 30 year lapse.

Thanks Amazon for finding this wonderful book for me. It was the first golf instruction book I'd ever purchased over 15 years ago. Sadly I lent it to a friend who failed to return it. I was delighted when I searched Amazon.com and found that it was still in print. A must read for the amateur golfer.
Good starter text.......1999-06-12
Nicklaus has packed a lot of information into relatively little text. All the illustrations in the cartoon format work well for many of the topics, especially for the beginner who hasn't yet swung the clubs much or just enough to realize it aint easy. I read this first then went on to read "Golf My Way", a later Nicklaus book with more text and detail. Note there are a couple things Nicklaus suggests in Lesson Tee that he later changed in his own game.

I bought this book when it first came out years ago... my 10-year old son is taking up the game and I've just ordered another copy for him; mine is dog-eared from years of use and re-use! This easy to read and use set of lessons concentrates on the basics of fundamental golf, in a format that builds on itself. From grip technique, to set up, to addressing the ball, through all the facets of ball-striking and ending with course management tips, you move from one lesson to the next under the tutelage of one of the game's undisputed masters. The compilation of lessons is based on cartoon-type illustrations and accompanying text. The beauty of this book is that it concentrates on basics; just sound, fundamental ideas that still allow the reader to learn why the golf ball does the things it does when struck in different ways. What causes a slice or hook? What causes "topping" or hitting fat? Why should I use different swings when faced with different types of sand in the trap? All these questions and many more are addressed in a clear, easy to read and understand style. You'll never need another instruction book, stick with this one and you'll learn the skills needed to enjoy the game for many years to come.

The simplicity of The Golf Doctor's format remains an antidote to the convoluted mechanics filling most instructionals. Jacobs doesn't want you to twist your body in a knot; he just wants to help you hit the ball where you want it to go. Tips for Jacobs' fans.......2005-11-01
After knowing about Jacobs, I searched the web for some material. I ordered Golf Doctor,Practical Golf and all the video series. Jacobs' main concept is that, whatever you think or do, the main reality of golf is the effect and trajectory you give the ball when you hit it with the face of your club. Thus, analising the flight of the ball, you should be able to know what you did wrong. Beatiful concept! No wonder Jacobs' approach to golf has granted him a legion of followers. Not too silly, nor too technical, it's effective!
Here is my advise:
-BUY BOTH.- To get the core concepts from Jacobs, you can avoid buyin the new "50 lessons" book if you prefer so, but I suggest you to buy Practical Golf together with Golf Doctor, so that you have a general reference book (Practical golf), and a guide for any ball flight (Golf Doctor).
-TRY TO GET THE VIDEOS.- They will save you throusands of dollars in lessons! They are simple and wise and you can feel the teaching approach of the master himself! I do not find the "short game" video as good as the Wfull swing" one, wich is a masterpiece. Get as well the faults and correction ones.
perfect fix.......2005-05-06
Excellent book! As an avid golfer, I've always had to tinker with my swing mechanics on an almost weekly basis to maintain my game. One quick lesson from this book, which simply suggested changing ball position (and offering an explanation of why) was the perfect fix. Now I am long and straight and loving it! I've been loaning the book to friends and telling them to quit paying for worthless lessons.

Long recognized as the master teacher to all the teachers who are now so famous on tv, Jacobs here has a mighty instruction book.
Based on his revolutionary idea of ball flight feedback, one can easily find what pattern one's shots are taking, then apply the remedies listed for that ailment.
His two turns and a swing is so simple, but profound. If there is one swing thought I fall back on, this is it. Jacobs concepts are so easy to follow and apply. Soon it will seem as though one can diagnose on the spot and correct.
Monumental classic which more golfers could benefit from using.

Great material - let down by poor writing.......2005-07-26
This book provides Nicklaus's views on his championship golf and on relevant aspects of his thinking and life. Since Nicklaus is the greatest champion ever by a distance (for the time being), and it is his thinking that's credited by his peers and himself for much of his success, his exposition is interesting in itself and as something for golfers to learn from. So far so good. Unfortunately Nicklaus's book is let down by the ghostwriter, Ken Bowden, who is, frankly, a poor writer. There's little variation of tone or pace or, even, vocabulary. Accounts of Nicklaus's many incredibly exciting championship battles (e.g. vs. Hogan and Palmer at the US Open; vs. Miller and Weiskopf at the Masters; vs. Watson in the British Open; vs Ballesteros at the Masters) fail to capture the excitement of those great contests. A comparison of this book with Nicklaus's early autobiography with Herbert Warren Wind illustrate what a wonderful writer Wind was and what a positive difference a really good writer can make.
GOOD SOLID WORK - ENJOYABLE AND INFORMATIVE.......2005-05-01
Certainly one of the leading sports figures of our times and beyond a doubt one of the best golfers of all times, this autobiography of Jack Nicklaus is both interesting and informative. Nicklaus, like Palmer, Jones, Player, et al, are a passing breed. Not only are they great atheletes, but they are gentlemen in every sense of the word. Mr. Nicklaus' approach to the game and to life reflects this at every turn. This is a work that can be enjoyed by both golfers and non-golfers equally. I have probably ran into better writers that Ken Bowden, but hey, he did an adequate job and certainly got Jack's story across. Enjoyed this one a lot and very much recommend it.
Very good book, hits all the highlights of his great career........2002-03-14
In fact, I have only very minor complaints about the book. One is that his "contributor", Bowden, uses some phrases ad nauseam. I don't know how many times we read that Jack finished the third round 3 shots "adrift" of the leader. Not trailing by three, or behind by three, but "adrift" by three. Using that term for variety is okay, but it's used to death. I think he's a golfer, not a sailor.
Again, though, that's a minor distraction that doesn't take away from the enjoyment of reading about the greatest.
An Incredibly Charming and Informative Book.......2001-02-24
Jack Nicklaus' career is one of the greatest in all sports. Especially famous are his 18 major victories (20 if you count the US Amateur), and this book is a story about those victories, and his life in between. His book is divided into 20 chapters - one for each of those major victories, and in them he discusses the events which transpired before that particular tournament, and the tournament itself. What a natural yet perfect structure for a book like this!
The best aspect of the book, I felt, was the immediacy with which Nicklaus writes. When you read this book you almost feel as if Nicklaus is talking to you, just yourself, at points.
Each chapter talks about a particular tournament and what happened before it. Particularly amazing is the clarity with which Nicklaus can recall those tournaments he describes. He describes individual key holes, what was going through his mind, and the general up and downs which accompany a round of golf. After reading this book, we know Nicklaus is a champion: he can win not only when he's up, but also when he's (to some extent) down. Also, as an interesting side note, Nicklaus also gives a few golfing tips - perhaps no one can become as great as him, but it never hurts to try!
And the last aspect of the book I found enjoyable were the photographs. True, they were black and white, but show how he changed over time, and chronicle some of the most memorable moments of his major career wins.
You come away more convinced than ever of Nicklaus' greatness. A great book to read anywhere, anytime.

Insights into this champion and our time in golf will be read by the future generations through the Bear's eyes. Humble yet intense, this guy never quits. Especially enjoyed his sharing of what was going on inside with his famous finish at Turnberry in 1977. He's a guy you respect for his game and his person.

I play to a 7 and have over 150 golf instruction books. Jack's new book is by far the very best I have ever read. Good, solid advice given in a no nonsense manner with great illustrations. Don't miss this one.

I wasn't blown away. It is more little snipets of information than actual tips you can use. I recommend buying his Golf My Way book and skipping this one.
Cliff Notes for Golf .......2005-06-19
Anyone who has seen the one page tips in a golf magazine will recognize the essence of this book. It doesn't go into depth, instead it will have a sketched image of what you should be doing along with a paragraph or two of explaination.
The tips have been organized into specific areas, setup, grip, and power for example to make it easier to find what you're looking for.
Keep in mind it's not intended to teach, just offer quick tips and advice and as such I pick it up just to flip through it to jog my memory at times. Originally over-priced at $25, I bought it for $7.95 and found it worthwhile at that price as a good reminder of what I should be doing by one of the best who has ever play the game.

The Book That Introduced Me To Jack Nicklaus........2004-05-07
This book is incredible, especially if you are a Jack Nicklaus fan. The books' lessons and photos are taken from when Jack was younger, "fatter", and under the instruction of Jack Grout. The photos show how Jack derived his power, also his "flying right elbow". I learned to play from reading this book, and to this day try to swing the same way I did as a youth--from the heels!Anyway, the book takes me back to when I was a boy, worshiped Jack, and would go out on Saturdays to play the game with my father. My Dad's gone, but having the old book around invokes warm memories.
great book by the greatest ever.......2000-05-01
the biography part is entertaining to read--especially the parts about him fainting at the births of his kids. The real meat of this book, though, was the instruction. This was written when jack was at the top of his game--when he was "fat jack" (his words). Back then HE was the monster off the tee moreso than Tiger today. Hearing what his keys were, and how he approached the game then was enlightening

First off, this book is written by Dorothy _Rodgers_, Richard Rogers' wife (yes, the composer). The book is about interior decorating and not about_ her_ life or_ his_life - though there are some anecdotes. It's not a childrens' book unless you know children who are already into tv shows such as "Trading Spaces" or "While You Were Out".
THat being said, you might wonder what this book _is_ about - it's about Mrs Rodgers designs and dishes for her home. Mrs Rodgers was quite busy in her own right. She had her own interior design company called "Repairs, Inc" and she is also an inventor and holds several patents. So she is not just trading in on her husband's name, she actually knows about this stuff.
Mrs Rodgers takes you thru various planning stages of redecorating your home. You see examples from her home as well as some of her friends' homes. She suggests using your own hobbies as focal points for decoration (needlepoint, crochet, gardening, that type of hobby) and shows you how to use these items to blend in with your home.
SHe also makes suggestions on entertaining in your home, how the shape of the table influences seating arrangements and gives instructions on how to seat your guests so nobody gets stuck with a bore.
There are also quite a few recipes that Mrs ROdgers has served to her guests. Some leave me cold, but that bittersweet icing recipe is well worth the price of admission.
If you want to see how the other half live, or maybe you are the other half and want to get some pointers, this is a great book to read - not only for the decorating tips but for the glimpse you get into Richard and Dorothy Rodgers' lives. I recommend this book highly.
