Book Description
Praise for The Cancer Treatment Revolution
"A wonderful journey through modern medical science, told with warmth and insight, brought to life through the stories of people confronting cancer. This book will inspire and educate both laymen and caregivers."
—Jerome Groopman, M.D., author of The Measure of Our Days and The Anatomy of Hope and Recanati, Professor, Harvard Medical School
"This is probably the best book on cancer that exists--beautifully written and unfailingly interesting, conveying a clear sense of hope for cancer patients and survivors. Cancer treatment has come a long way but not without intense struggles and passions, which David Nathan narrates from the inside as one of the leading players. He explains cancer more clearly than anyone else, and his portraits of great cancer doctors are sharp and unforgettable, a contribution to history."
—Richard Preston, author of The Hot Zone and The Demon in the Freezer
"No one is better positioned to tell the tale of the cancer treatment revolution of the last half century than David Nathan. A brilliant physician-scientist, he has been present at the cusps of history in this life-and-death field. The story he tells here is fascinating, and his book is captivating."
—Atul Gawande, M.D., author of Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science and Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance and Assistant Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School
"David Nathan is a true storyteller. In The Cancer Treatment Revolution, he tells stories that bridge cancer patients and cancer research as few others could. These gripping tales will be appreciated by those who live with cancer and those who strive to create new therapies."
—Thomas Cech, Ph.D., recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and President of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
"David Nathan, one of the nation's preeminent clinician-scientists, tells the stories of three cancer patients, revealing compelling human facets--the dedication of the remarkable teams that care for these patients and, even more, the bravery and fortitude of the patients and their families."
—Harold Varmus, M.D., recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Medicine, President of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and former director of the National Institutes of Health
"Engaged by the compelling triumphs and tragedies of patients whose normal lives are inevitably altered by a life-threatening cancer, the reader of The Cancer Treatment Revolution will easily appreciate the impact of the new cancer diagnostics and therapies compared to even relatively recent cancer treatments."
—Karen Antman, M.D., Dean, Boston University School of Medicine
"This personal, highly readable account by one of the leaders of the cancer treatment revolution explains how the revolution has come about and how it will change the future."
—Sir Paul Nurse, Ph.D., President of Rockefeller University and recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Medicine

The author is former head of Dana Farber & a prof. Harvard Medical School. .......2007-10-17
The author is the (now retired) head of the Dana Farber Cancer Instutute and he's currently a Professor at Harvard Medical School. This certainly sets the book apart from the vast sea of popular Health and Medicine books written by people who only know how to write popular books and never published anything subject to peer review. This is a great read!
I read the book not having cancer myself, so I was mostly interested in getting a feel for the flavor of the science behind future and current cancer treatment. This book was great for that. The fight against cancers is extremely interesting scientifically.
If you actually have cancer, then I would recommend reading this for reliable information because the author is at the top of his field.
A promise of Hope.......2007-05-13
The reader is left with the feeling that just around the corner specific cancer killing drugs will be available (as opposed to the current drugs which kill all cells in sight...(which is why patients become gravely ill from "chemo" treatments). The problem is, of course, how far is the corner..10 years, 20, more?
Still,it is worth reading and gives hope where there may only have been despair...
Cancer Treatment Revolution --- review.......2007-05-12
Very clearly written, warm hearted. To me the title suggested a more comprehensive coverage than there is. There is a very good introductory chapter and then 3 individual cases as examples of the medical progress. An excellent start on the subject.
Book Description
With a new introduction and new readers study guide by the author
The idea of "The Rapture"-the return of Christ to rescue and deliver Christians off the earth-is an extremely popular interpretation of the Bible's Book of Revelation and a jumping-off point for the best-selling "Left Behind" series of books. This interpretation, based on a psychology of fear and destruction, guides the daily acts of thousands if not millions of people worldwide. In The Rapture Exposed, Barbara Rossing argues that this script for the world's future is nothing more than a disingenuous distortion of the Bible. The truth, Rossing argues, is that Revelation offers a vision of God's healing love for the world. The Rapture Exposed reclaims Christianity from fundamentalists' destructive reading of the biblical story and back into God's beloved community.

rapture.......2007-08-23
There are many different views of the coming of the end of the world. The book of Revelation has been misunderstood and misused and taken out of context by mainline evangelicals. The Rapture Exposed brings to light to truth of the Bible. It is very well written and very theological. Anyone who believes in the rapture needs to read this book.
Hope for the Bible view of comfort in the end of gosple age is not left behind in this book........2007-08-03
It seems to me that many love to be tricked, fooled and lied to about the Bible. Thank God there are authors willing to dig for truth and revealed what they have learned in their writings as Rev. Barbara Rossing as she explains that the Left Behind novels are NOT of the truth and why in "The Rapture Exposed."
The religious world is confused the thinking about interpreting I Thessalonians 4:13-18, on which the concept of "The Rapture" is based. Most Christian people believe that these verses are teaching how Jesus will return to take away faithful Christians from earth, the rest mainly Jews, infidels or other faiths will be left to suffer the pains of man made hell on Earth. Whereas this teaching was intended by the Apostle Paul to be one of consolation to the Thessalonian brethren who were enduring severe persecution.
These were faithful Christians did not go to heaven when they died, but as verse 13 explains, they were now "asleep" in death. They also are described as being asleep "in Jesus" (vs. 14), which means that, although they were asleep in death, they were in the arms of Jesus and the Father. Paul was reminding these brethren at Thessaloniki that their brethren who had died would be brought forth in the resurrection. First, however, all would be entering the sleep of death. The resurrection would not take place until the Lord returned. Those who would be living at the time of the present age of coming of the Lord would not precede those who had fallen asleep in death. Contrary to the concept that when our Lord returns he sweeps up all the faithful living upon earth, Paul says that those asleep in death will be come first. These will be the first raised from the dead.
Those few who have been invited to follow Jesus in the narrow way proof 'faithful unto death' (Rev. 2:10) Thus, those who are of this class and are alive at the time of our Lord's return must die before they can join all the other faithful footstep followers. The important feature of our Lord's return is the resurrection. All those who had previously died will be raised from the dead. Those who are living at the time will die, but will not have to remain in the sleep of death awaiting the resurrection, rather they will be changed immediately to be with the Lord in the twinkling of an eye (I Cor. 15:51-54) Those thus assembled with the other faithful become the completed body of Christ HIS CHURCH to perform a great work during the kingdom of assisting Jesus in bringing back from the dead all that are in their graves. (John 5:28,29, RSV) The work of uplifting the downtrodden family of Adam will end after one thousand years of education in the way of righteousness and Truth. Obey God and live.
This is the real hope for the world.

The 2nd half of the book was better than the first half.......2007-07-20
Barbara Rossing is a learned Lutheran New Testament scholar. She writes this book to expose the false doctrine of a pretribulation rapture and to reveal the true message of hope found in the book of Revelation.
The first half of the book was disappointing. Rossing paints with a broad brush and writes off dispensationalists as right wing wackos who glorify the violence in the Bible and who are hoping for things to get worse in the world so that Jesus will come back and rapture them home to heaven. She misrepresents the theology and the hermeneutics of dispensationalism time and again, too many times to enumerate in this short review. She chooses not to interact with established dispensational scholars such as John Walvoord, Renald Showers, Robert Thomas, and J.D Pentecost. She seems to prefer easier targets such as Hal Lindsay, Tim LaHaye, and John Hagee.
The truth is that most of the dispensationalists that Barbara critiques are people just like her: They are trying to lovingly live for Jesus the best way they can in light of the fact that He could come back at any time.
The second half of the book was much better. Rossing presents Revelation as a visionary book, much like Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Story," a vision of how bad things could get if we turned our backs on God. She sees the Revelation as a wake up call, as a way for God to say, "It's time to repent and turn to me." She has a hard time believing that God would ever actually carry out the judgments threatened throughout Revelation.
But as we see in Genesis 6-9, Exodus 7-14, Joshua 7-12, and in the judgments on Israel and Judah described in 2 Kings 17 and 2 Kings 24-25 (not to mention the terrible events of 66-70 A.D), God does sometimes carry out His judgment.
There is an appendix where Rossing briefly expounds on some other relevant New Testament texts. Her exegesis in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 is plausible and possible, but unfortunately, she adopts Robert Gundry's idiosyncratic reading of John 14:1-4, a text where Christ clearly promises to come back for Christians and take them to heaven.
She also expounds on Matthew 24:41-44, but the truth is that there are no contemporary dispensationalists that I am aware of that teach that this is the rapture. Most would agree with her reading of the text.
Dr. Rossing is a good writer, and I hope she puts out some more books.

Left Behind Is Busted!.......2007-07-10
This book is a true exposition and explanation of how the book of Revelation ought to be interpreted. Barbara Rossing exposes all of the inconsistencies of Left Behind, Hal Lindsey's "Late Great Planet Earth" and all people of their kind and shows their theology for the hoax and the misinterpretation of the Bible that it truly is. The only criticism that I have of this book is that Rossing focuses so much on good stewardship of the earth and social justice that she "downgrades" heaven a bit. I have no doubt that she still believes heaven to be a real place; however, her main concern is calling Christians in the here and now to live out their faith in Jesus by loving one another as we wait for Him to return. Score one for the true historical Christian faith against these new weird interpretations that were taught NO WHERE and at NO TIME in the Christian church until 1830!
Cuts through the confusion on Revelation.......2007-05-28
If you cringe from the gleeful tint of the books and televangelists predicting and anticipating a blood-soaked end of the world, all claiming legitimacy from the vision of John, and all a bit too far from the love and peace of Jesus for comfort, you're not alone. Rossing examines the text of Revelation and reminds us that the true intent of the book was to extol Jesus as "the Lamb," the bringer of forgiveness. She points out how dangerous it is for would-be political masterminds to try to tie their personal agendas to the Scripture. This book is a brisk but thoughtful counterpoint to the John Hagee crackpots of the day. Read it if you have seen one too many weird tracts stuck in a phone booth.
Book Description
There's new hope for preventing and treating heart disease. If you suffer from heart disease, Dr. Stephen T. Sinatra has the solution you've been looking for: Maximize the amount of oxygen your heart extracts from your bloodstream by accelerating the rate at which your cells convert nutrients to energy. This can be achieved by following Dr. Sinatra's energy-enhancing nutritional approach. This approach focuses on the supplemental use of three amazing bioenergetic nutrients: Coenzyme Q10, L-carnitine, and D-ribose. The synergistic combination of these nutrients essentially charge up every body cell to function at optimal capacity. So, not only will you experience renewed heart health with all that energy, you'll also gain a greater sense of overall well-being.

Great advice!.......2007-09-28
I ordered Dr. Sinatra's other heart book "Heart Sense for Women" for my mother as a Mother's Day gift 5 years ago. The information she gleaned from that book has transformed her. Now both my parents are taking heart health supplements and doing great (they are in their 80's). They showed this latest book to their cardiologist (he is the head cardiologist at Johns Hopkins)who strongly recommended they continue on the supplements as he takes them as well. They look and feel great. I have since started supplementing myself since heart disease is hereditary. I would highly recommend this book to anyone concerned about their heart health. It's an eye opener.
This is a great book !.......2007-06-27
Dr Sinatra has written a great book ! It has lots of information that we can use.
He tells us that blood flow to the heart increases 38 % in people taking CoQ10, also this same people will have a 9 % improvement in the heart functional capacity. Foods rich in CoQ10 are Oily fish with high levels of Omega-3 (salmon ), organ meats and whole grains. (Just in case you decide to go the food way ). He also mentions that the best CoQ10 is made with the Bio-Solv technology and is called Q-Gel. Just Google it.
He says that the "Twin Pillars of Healing" are CoQ10 and L-Carnitine, they both enhance energy at a cellular level.
CoQ10 sparks energy in the cells and L-Carnitine is necessary to bring the fuel into the heart cells to be burned for energy, and the heart needs constant energy to pump properly.
He also talks about other very important nutrients like Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), N-Acetylcysteine (NAC), OPC's (grape seed and Pycnogenol ), etc.
Psssss......Let me tell you a secret.....All of my MD. friends take CoQ10.
Buy this book, it's so good ! has so much detail. Also "Heart Sense for Women" by Dr, Sinatra , is excellent.
Doc Sinatra, not Frank.......2007-05-13
Sinatra's good! Lots of big words, but he's helpful and truthful...
The Sinatra Solution-Metabolic Cardiology.......2007-01-06
Amazing book,Essential for anyone who has CHF or heart disease. My husband
followed the nutritional suppliment regime and his Cardiologist is impressed
with the improvement. We even purchased a copy of Dr Sinatra's book for the Cardiologist.
superb book.......2006-08-22
I read roughly three "health" books per week. It is my hobby. All of the books by Steve Sinatra are excellent, but so far, in my mind, this is the best! Dr. Sinatra writes clearly and succinctly. He is easy to understand. And, after reading a "gillion" health books, I think his answers to some of the problems addressed in the book are light years better than those presented elsewhere. This is a must read!

Book Description
Anxiety is not always psychological but rather a disease that can now be controlled. The symptoms are devastating: sudden unprovoked attacks of anxiety-accompanied by skipping and racing of the heart, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, dizzy spells. Even worse is the fear that you are losing your mind. But here's the good news. The more unexpected and unprovoked the attacks or the symptoms, the more likely that the victim is suffering from a biologically beset disease. What's more, medical science can now overcome this disease in virtually all cases through a combination of drugs and behavior therapy. Dr. David V. Sheenan, formerly of the Havard Medical School, is now the Director of Research of the College of Medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa. He draws upon recent research and his own pioneering breakthroughs in the treatment of anxiety to present in this book: -Quizzes that will help you determine whether your anxiety is caused by normal stress or is the result of a genetically influenced physical disorder. Seven progressive stages of the disease-and the four steps necessary for recovery. Detailed case histories of former anxiety victims who are now leading full and productive lives. Reassurance and guidance to family members and friends who want to help, but don't know how. This book offers new hope to millions of men and women across the country.

Very insightful, helpful book.......2007-07-27
This book was suggested to me by a social worker, and I was somewhat skeptical of it coming from him; but I read it nevertheless.. Let me say, that this book provides insights and methods not often understood by many in the medical field. In saying that, I mean that it is very rare to come across someone that can relate to someone that suffers from Generalized Anxiety Disorder and panic attacks the way that this author does.. A must read if you or someone in your immediate family suffers from one of these problems.
A+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++.......2007-02-12
This book is AMAZING!!! Although some of the chapters are a little (okay, a LOT) outdated, mainly the one about medications...I skipped through it...I would recommend this book to ANYONE struggling with panic attacks or ANYONE struggling with UNDERSTANDING someone with panic attacks!!! If you think someone in your life is nuts for freaking out over something tiny pick up this book it could explain A LOT!!!
Omissions and Narrow Viewpoint.......2004-07-27
This book has some excellent information which can be found in other less biased books. Since the author is a doctor, I'd expect him to have the viewpoint he does. However, unlike other authors on the topic, he is completely negligent in his presentation. He completely overstresses the biological component of anxiety and the necessity of medication, calling the psychological viewpoint outdated.
As both a long-time sufferer of severe anxiety and depression, and a psychology student, I can attest to the fact that anxiety is not caused just by one source of stress in life. His stages of the development of agoraphobia are correct. I lived through it.
However, I also lived through the recovery he describes in the last chapters. And I did it WITHOUT medication. He says recovery is possible without medication, and yet the person will still be vulnerable to relapsing if any major stressors re-appear. The protagonist in the book (there are actual characters-a real 'love' story, undoubtedly used as a technique to draw readers and believers to his simplistic answer). The woman, at the end of the book, tries only ONE medication which magically works for her.
This scenario is highly, highly unrealistic. Most people struggle with trying various medications. Whether this is a function of the disease or not, it is the typical occurrence from what I have both witnessed personally and through research. Additionally, the woman in the book might not just forget to take her medication (as she does in one section and suffers a relapse), but she might also require higher and higher doses in order to keep herself completely biologically armored from any further anxiety attacks.
This book presents a really cute story. Unfortunately, this is rarely the way it happens. He completely neglects the behavioral aspects of anxiety disorders, such as need for control. He also ignores the fact that many people have mixed anxiety-depression, and that depression isn't always a result of the anxiety limiting them, but that it can be a precursor to anxiety.
Also, some names of medications are omitted and incorrect, unless these are publishing errors. For instance, he mentions Alprazolam as a new drug, which it isn't, and also talks about its anti-depressant qualities. Well, Alprazolam is a benzodiazepine. It is NOT an antidepressant. Next, he mentions the trade names of all the benzodiazepines except for Diazepam, which we know as Valium.
While the names of drugs might be innocent omissions, his simplistic presentation of anxiety is NOT without extreme bias and favoritism for medicine. Is there a biological component to anxiety? Of course there is. As long as we are alive, there is a biological component to everything. But this does not mean that medication is REQUIRED to correct it. Anxiety isn't diabetes. It won't kill you if you don't take Prozac. Medication is a temporary relief, not a lifetime solution. The only real solution is learning that anxiety will not kill you. This doctor seems aimed to convince you otherwise.
You don't have to believe me, after all the author is the one with the medical degree. But I know my experience was completely different than what he has presented when it comes to treatment, and since I am human and there are others like me, I would assume I am not alone. I write the above as a warning to those who are new to this field and are looking for basic insight into their anxiety problems. You want to heal biologically? Look at your diet, exercise, vitamins, the basics! Don't go running to the doctor for nothing, wasting months trying medications with side effects more devastating than the anxiety itself.
Excellent book.......2004-06-30
I've had this book for 13 years and never attempted to read it until now. I thought alot of my symptoms were unique to me because I never heard of anyone else having them until I read this book. I like the way the author describes all of the steps anxiety goes through. It has helped me to recognize things I went through before I realized I had a problem with anxiety. I really feel much better about myself and believe that I do have a chance to get over my problems with anxiety.
Excellent introductory book about anxiety.......2001-09-21
An excellent book about panic attacks which approaches the disease from a biological perspective. Sheehan covers the seven progressive stages of the disease, causes, treatment and recovery, using case histories as examples. The book also contains an anxiety scale to help you determine whether the level of your anxiety is excessive.
Book Description
This is the story of a political miracle -- the perfect match of man and moment. Franklin Delano Roosevelt took office in March of 1933 as America touched bottom. Banks were closing everywhere. Millions of people lost everything. The Great Depression had caused a national breakdown. With the craft of a master storyteller, Jonathan Alter brings us closer than ever before to the Roosevelt magic. Facing the gravest crisis since the Civil War, FDR used his cagey political instincts and ebullient temperament in the storied first Hundred Days of his presidency to pull off an astonishing conjuring act that lifted the country and saved both democracy and capitalism.
Who was this man? To revive the nation when it felt so hopeless took an extraordinary display of optimism and self-confidence. Alter shows us how a snobbish and apparently lightweight young aristocrat was forged into an incandescent leader by his domineering mother; his independent wife; his eccentric top adviser, Louis Howe; and his ally-turned-bitter-rival, Al Smith, the Tammany Hall street fighter FDR had to vanquish to complete his preparation for the presidency.
"Old Doc Roosevelt" had learned at Warm Springs, Georgia, how to lift others who suffered from polio, even if he could not cure their paralysis, or his own. He brought the same talents to a larger stage. Derided as weak and unprincipled by pundits, Governor Roosevelt was barely nominated for president in 1932. As president-elect, he escaped assassination in Miami by inches, then stiffed President Herbert Hoover's efforts to pull him into cooperating with him to deal with a terrifying crisis. In the most tumultuous and dramatic presidential transition in history, the entire banking structure came tumbling down just hours before FDR's legendary "only thing we have to fear is fear itself" Inaugural Address.
In a major historical find, Alter unearths the draft of a radio speech in which Roosevelt considered enlisting a private army of American Legion veterans on his first day in office. He did not. Instead of circumventing Congress and becoming the dictator so many thought they needed, FDR used his stunning debut to experiment. He rescued banks, put men to work immediately, and revolutionized mass communications with pioneering press conferences and the first Fireside Chat. As he moved both right and left, Roosevelt's insistence on "action now" did little to cure the Depression, but he began to rewrite the nation's social contract and lay the groundwork for his most ambitious achievements, including Social Security.
From one of America's most respected journalists, rich in insights and with fresh documentation and colorful detail, this thrilling story of presidential leadership -- of what government is for -- resonates through the events of today. It deepens our understanding of how Franklin Delano Roosevelt restored hope and transformed America.
The Defining Moment will take its place among our most compelling works of political history.

FDR's Power.......2007-10-15
Quick paced, well-written overview of the FDR peaceful revolution of 1932/33. Hoover had one person opening and responding to his mail. FDR needed a team of 50 people to do the same job, such was the response to his hopeful message. Alf Landon in 1936 called Social Security a "cruel hoax" and was buried as a result in another landslide. It's good to remember all this
The making of a President.......2007-09-15
Using primary sources, overlooked documents, obscure books and oral histories, Jonathan Alter gives us a fairly balanced perspective into the life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This in an attempt to try and explain the roots and effects of FDR's amazing `first class temperament'. Alter searches FDR's early life for the answers to this mystery and then moves from nomination, election, New Deal and the changing effects upon the office of the Presidency. Closing out his book is an epilogue wrapping up the text with interesting information on what became of some of FDR's brain trust.
Alter writes a very interesting and informative book. One that is well worth the glimpse into the life and actions of one of America's great Presidents. FDR was a man who is difficult to characterize. It would appear that he didn't truly trust anyone but himself. I'm not sure he ever completely let down the bright and happy mask. Perhaps Louis Howe, his adviser, came closer than anyone to getting inside. We aren't given or perhaps it's unknown how much Sara Roosevelt, FDR's mother, was allowed into her son's thoughts. He keep those thoughts and true counsel to himself creating many times an atmosphere of deception and guile. He implemented policies without much regard for their impact on productivity. Alter discloses that "expanding the pie was not much a part of the discussion". In many areas there wasn't much growth besides public works. FDR certainly was the man of the hour. After the doldrums of Hoover, he was a bright fresh ray of hope and positivity. His first 100 days still hold the standard for future US Presidents. What he accomplished, while not all positive, was truly remarkable. Well worth reading and gaining a better understanding into another of history's great men.
FDR at His Best.......2007-09-12
The Defining Moment, by Jonathan Alter, can be best summarized by its own subtitle: "FDR's Hundred Days and the Triumph of Hope." I seldom "read" the audio versions of histories or biographies because the numerous dates and names are hard to retain, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this 10-disc, 12 hour and 35 minute presentation is so well read by Grover Gardner that I was able to easily follow the book.
Few of us who didn't live through the troubles of the 1930s realize today just how close the United States came to suffering a literal revolution of its citizens who saw everything around them collapsing while they so desperately struggled to feed their families. Just as the unemployment rate began to soar, workers faced the likelihood of losing their savings to a failing bank system. That was the situation faced by newly elected President Franklin Delano Roosevelt when he stepped into his White House office on his first day in office.
Roosevelt won the "anyone but Hoover" election easily and, while many in his own party did not consider him to be the best man for the job, feeling that he was an intellectual lightweight and physically unable to meet the demands of the job, he turned out to be ideally suited for the situation he faced. Instead of becoming the benevolent dictator that some were calling for, Roosevelt set off in co-operation with congress on a 100-day program that effectively saved both capitalism and democracy for future generations. He accepted a plan to save the banking system, a plan that had been largely drafted by administrators from the Hoover administration, and began to rebuild the confidence of Americans within days of the beginning of his first term.
Within the first 100 days of this first term, plans were in place to put people back to work and the country began to recover from the panic and despair that had cost Hoover the White House. Roosevelt's judgment was not always the best and his political instincts sometimes unnecessarily made enemies of people he could have had as political allies rather than as political enemies. He was adamantly opposed to federal deposit insurance for bank accounts, for instance, because he believed that the weaker banks would fail and that the larger, healthier banks would then follow suit. Fortunately, he was unable to stop congress from passing an insurance bill despite his opposition. Of course, although it didn't occur until 1937, Roosevelt's greatest legacy is the Social Security System which he helped to create. Roosevelt may not have always had a plan, but he understood that action was necessary in order to change the public's perception that its government was unable to cope with the country's problems. Some of what he tried did not work, but enough did, to make Americans believe that things were finally turning around.
The Defining Moment gave me a new appreciation for all that Roosevelt accomplished and for just how close the country came to being changed forever in a negative way. Things were so desperate that many in the government and among the citizenry were prepared to junk capitalism in favor of some variation on socialism or communism. As has so often happened in American history, the right man for the job of president came along at the moment he was most needed. Franklin Roosevelt successfully faced his "defining moment" and the rest is history.
The Defining Moment: FDR's Hundred days.......2007-08-23
There is a reason why all new employees and new president's are judged at 100 days--FDR. He set the standard for action and this book explores how he did so. Excellent read & well written.
An Important Remembrance.......2007-08-04
Outstanding encapsulation of the era that led to the development of a vibrant American middle class and the prosperity shared for some 40 years by more than the greedy few. This era was ended with the rise of Ronald Reagan who ushered in the demise of the middle class and the dark times we suffer through to this day. That's about to change.

The Whole Enchilada.......2006-05-07
Dr. Bockian leaves nothing out of this very useful aid to BPD. Starting with a penetrating description of BPD, the book then provides information on diagnosis, various therapies and treatments and how and where to find help. It offers plenty of information which can bring hope and understanding for people who must deal with BPD.
Very concise...wonderful! .......2006-03-22
I have read other books on Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), but I think that this is the best one yet!
Some mainstream books on this disorder are too technical to be understood by the lay person. Even though I am a mental health professional, the book was really concise and also quite entertaining! This book is also a good reference guide, and provides a wonderful summary for people who are new to learning about this disorder.
So, if you think you have BPD or know someone who has it, I highly recommend this book. Worth every penny!
Important Information.......2005-12-31
As I was searching for a book on BPD, I found it astonishingly difficult to understand the books nature without actually buying it and reading it, which makes the whole "searching and inquiring previously to purchase" almost impossible.
So I decided to give a quick explanation on this book, in addition to a review, so that other people might find the information useful...
"New Hope for people with BPD" is not a self help book; it is a self-help suggestion book. Meaning, the book begins, as does every other BPD book, with describing the disorder, explaining the DSM criteria and giving useful information about the condition. After that, the author proceeds to vastly describing treatment methods found in the USA today.
Throughout the book he covers many different kinds of therapeutic approaches quite objectively, leaving the reader with a ton of useful info and a bigger chance to make an educated decision on the therapeutic approach that is right for him/her. If up until now you had to go to a therapist and raise the question of "how are you planning to treat me?" without knowing anything about other ways, now you can read this book and decide beforehand on the way you see fittest for yourself.
The author includes various alternative approaches, such as alternative medicine, self help and nutritional options, but he does not give direct instruction on how to actually treat the disease, only information about options out there.
It is true that the author does concentrate mainly on the extreme symptoms of BPD, rather than the root of the problem, but then again, he is not presuming to solve the problem, but to help us find a way to solve it ourselves with the help of therapy.
I found this book to be extremely helpful and informational, non-presumptuous, and intelligent, and there's nothing I love more than an author who trusts the readers ability to understand "smart-stuff"...
I recommend this book as your first BPD book, but make sure you modify your expectations - if you can't afford therapy or do not want to go to therapy, this might not be the book for you.
The most useful book out there on BPD !!.......2005-12-21
This book has changed my life...I am able to deal with people in my life who have this disorder FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER....It is very clear and filled with user-friendly, sensitive, competent advice from people who clearly care and who clearly know what it takes for a person with BPD to survive and even thrive in spite of such a burdensome life...It truly is well named....NEW HOPE...It's really the first hope I have ever had for myself and my family members...Thank you Dr. Bockian (Valerie and Nora too) for being so good at what you do !! Reading this book is like talking first-hand to therapists WHO GET IT !!
New Hope for People with Borderline Personality Disorder.......2005-08-31
Written for the layman. Understandable with a lot of pertinent information. My daughter is the one diagnosed and she is going through the text and highlighting what she feels is important and that she can relate to, and so far, most of the pages are predominantly yellow (highlighted). This has been far more beneficial than the text and workbook that were recommended to her that were written for the physician. In fact, the group leader was unaware of this book and took down the information to order copies for all who are treating patients with this disorder.
Product Description
This full color coffee table sized book about Zimbabwe's geography, history, culture and of course the Shona sculpture produced there is one of a kind. It is the first book published in the West about Shona sculpture and the Shona artists. It is also perhaps the only full length book on Shona sculpture ever printed in full color. A perfect balance of rich text and beautiful photographs taken by award winning travel photographer Robert Holmes (winner of "Travel Photographer of the Year" and also a National Geographic Photographer). Not just a book on Shona art, the history from ancient times to modern day is touched on in this book as well as other items such as geology which all contribute to a greater understanding of the current Shona sculpture art movement. This is the 2nd printing of the 2nd edition.

Book about the background of Shona sculpturing art.......2006-08-30
This year for the third time I followed a sculpture workshop by a Zimbabwian artist called Samuel Masakwa. Teh reason for me to buy this book was to learn more about the background of this form of art. And for that it's a great book. It tells the history of Zimbabwe and of Shona art, the artists and how they consider their art form, the frequently useds themes (gods, animals, family etc.) For me it was a very valuable book, nicely illustrated as well and next year when Samuel Masakwa comes back to Holland to give his workshop, I will attend it differently, because I know much more about this art form and I will let the stone speak more to me.

Wholesalers of Shona Sculpture.......2004-05-24
I have been involved with the export of Shona Sculpture for over 4 years now through our website zuluexclusive.com and was given this book on a trip to the States last year. It certainly describes everything about shona sculpture in great detail and shows many beautiful pictures. We recommend this book to everyone that we supply sculpture to. If you have any questions about Shona Sculpture we would love to hear from you heather@zuluexclusive.com
This book does what is says, and superbly!.......2000-12-06
It was interesting to read the other reviews before purchasing this book. I was anxious to read it for myself, since it consistantly got high marks, yet also recieved criticism for not being comprehensive, an apparent dichotomy! Upon opening the book, I read the introduction, which some of the severest critics seem not to have done...for if they had, they would have seen that it clearly states that this is NOT the defintive book on Shona Sculpture, nor would it ever pretend to be! Rather it is an OVERVIEW, and introduction to the people, country, history, geology and culture that have produced this unique artform. The authors also CLEARLY state upfront that this book is THEIR own opinions, and that , as in all art movements, there will be disagreements as to the whens, whos, hows etc. Given this self-appraising clarification from the authors themselves, I found myself at ease reading this book, which has quite a lot of thoughtful and well researched content as well as many beautiful pictures!
comprehensive but not academic.......2000-10-21
This is a wondeful book for giving the background in Zimbabwe of the Shona people and a pictographic essay of Zimbabwe which feeds into the Shona sculpture. However, this is not an academic study, not does it give comprehensive biographies of each major Shona sculptor. In its favor, it shows a closeness to the people and an understanding of their history and daily life. It also does have an extensive listing of sculptors which is helpful.
Spirits in Stone: The New Face of African Art.......1999-12-15
I am one of the largest importers of Shona sculpture in the US. [ www.shonagallery.com ]I have traveled to Zimbabwe more than 12 times and have purchased thousands of wonderful sculptures from more than 200 artists directly. I believe this book to be the very best treatment of shona sculpture and its relationship to the Zimbabwean culture that I have seen. The people who put it together seem to have a similar perspective, as I do, on the art form and the people of Zimbabwe. As the country of Zimbabwe and Its people have evolved, so has the art form evolved. It is not an art form exclusive to the first generation artists and their styles. It is a vibrant expressive means of sharing cultural and spiritual feelings through stone. The young artists of Zimbabwe are some of the finest stone sculptors in the world today, and Spirits in Stone is a very inspiring reflection and that fact. It would be a wonderful book to have along with any piece of Shona sculpture one owns, or just a beautiful book to have around.

The Seven Next Words of Christ.......2007-09-23
To found this book to be exceptional and encouraging. I read it after the Easter season and it continues to help me keep that glorious miracle in my thoughts. Some artist at my church created scenes from the seven last sayings of Christ from the cross and so this book seemed to be a good thing to follow those inspiring works of art. Shane Stanford is truly a talented writer and can help anyone that is looking for hope through the resurrection story. Martha Beadle

Book Description
Eating disorders–including anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating–are among the most painful and difficult illnesses a person can face. Sufferers know firsthand the confusion and agony these illnesses can bring. They also know how it feels to long for hope–and to wonder if victory can ever be achieved.
The truth is, eating disorders affect the whole person. Yet treatments often focus on emotional issues alone. In this powerful book for individuals who suffer from eating disorders and those who love them, Dr. Gregg Jantz fills in the gaps left by traditional treatment programs, tackling not only the emotional, but also the crucial and all-too-often ignored relational, physical, and spiritual dimensions of healing.
Outlining a comprehensive, holistic, and practical approach, Hope, Help, and Healing for Eating Disorders brings spiritual, relational, and physical elements back into the healing process. Described by best-selling author and physician Lendon Smith, author of Feed Your Kids Right, as “the most helpful book on eating disorders there is,” this book will, with God’s help and grace, lead readers out of their bondage to eating disorders and permanently transform lives.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read!.......2007-01-13
This book is a must read for anyone who has been touched by eating disorders! Dr. Jantz walks the reader through the pain and issues, always from a loving, compassionate- and relevant - Christian approach. The reader is guided to greater tools of healing and recovery through this book; the journal and "workbook" aspects of it alone, shine a much needed light of God's love and truth to the individual and to the disorder. It is a must read for those afflicted in any way, as well as for those within the field of eating disorder treatment and recovery!
Great concepts for treating eating disorders.......2006-10-06
I am a minister that does counseling with individuals struggling with a variety of issues including eating disorders.
Over and over again I find that the issues that Dr. Jantz address in this book are common among those I counsel. Especially the area of unforgiveness. I am convinced that unforgiveness is the #1 root of much mental illness, addictions, and emotional instability.
I really appreciate Dr. Jantz's whole-person approach to the treating of eating disorders. Too many times counselors and treatment facilities only deal with changing behavior and ignore the other areas of a person's life. Based upon my experience, unless all areas of a person's life is addressed they will not experience long term recovery.
Reading teh book you come to understand that Dr. Jantz is interested in more than a person having victory over eating disorders-his goal is for them to become a whole person in all areas of their life.
wasn't as helpful as I thought it would be. .......2006-04-14
As a woman of God, I looked to this book for hope and faith that one day I'll overcome my eating disorder. I am currently 2 years into recovery from EDNOS.
However, although this book isn't as bad as "the best little girl in the world," I was not pleased. I felt like it was going no where. I didn't really get any answers at all. The continuous repetitive thoughts going through my mind basically read "okay, but... I already knew that... what's next?"
Not worth it!.......2005-05-11
If you are not a religious person, don't waste your time. Too much God and not enough healing.
Not worth the time!.......2004-07-19
I was first attracted to this book because it had exactly what I have been looking for- a list of questions and activities to do at the end of each chapter to help you recover. I do not agree with the approach the auther took at ALL. I admit, I didn't finish the book. I was THAT annoyed with it. It seemed to start down the trail of claiming that all eating disorders stem from some sort of abuse or another. The way it is written, it has you blame anyone you want; it seems as though the author is just setting you up for wanting revenge. At first I tried to follow along, but soon realized I was making up events and completely exaggerating things, just to "fit" into their mold that my eating disorder is a direct cause from abuse.
Maybe this book helps people who really do have abuse issues that caused their eating disorder. I don't know, so I can't review this book for those people. But if you, like me, have had no history of abuse, don't even bother thumbing through this one. Just move on to the next book.
Book Description
On the morning of September 11, 2001, two hijacked airplanes destroyed New York's World Trade Center Towers. Thus began the extraordinary story of a great city coping with the worst disaster in its history. As shock and amazement gave way to grief for the victims and their families, New Yorkers reached deep inside themselves to discover a sense of civic nobility, exemplified by the heroism of firefighters, police, and rescue units.
In this new book from Abrams, the editors of New York magazine provide a visual record of the city in the week after the attack, through the images of several superb photographers and the words of prominent New Yorkers, including Mayor Giuliani. The book begins with the attack itself, documenting the panic and chaos it caused, and goes on to chronicle the rescue efforts by firefighters, police, and construction workers at Ground Zero and the attempts of the city's leaders to maintain morale. Color photos record a vast emotional upheaval of grief, rage, and patriotism, and display the many memorials created by private citizens, at hospitals, parks, firehouses, and in the streets.
All proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the September 11th Fund, which has been created by the United Way and the New York Community Trust to respond to the immediate and long-term needs of the victims, their families, and the communities affected by the events of September 11.

Magnific photos........2002-03-14
Very good book. I would recommend to anybody interested about the tragedy of september 11, 2001. The money raised from the sale of this book goes to the September 11 Fund. Help the families of New York...
An American Tragedy 9.11.01.......2002-02-06
This book grabs you.
I had watched the events take place on television at work, with my coworkers, one could look out the window and see the smoke in the distance. Being a New Yorker everyone I know has either lost someone or knows someone who did.
I had seen the book in a store before Christmas, but it was too close to 9/11 to buy it. Since that time it has been sold out everywhere.
If you want to see hell on earth in book form this is it. But more importantly, buy it and keep it so that we never forget 9/11/2001 or let it happen again.
rewview not purchased.......2002-01-31
I have never received this book and I was actually ordering a different book when I ordered. I wanted to order the 9/11 book by LIFE magazine, not this one. Like I said; I wouldn't be able to critique this anyway because I never received it.
Please let me know how to delete this order and re-order the one by LIFE magazine instead.
Thank you
Nora Bartman
Rivoting!!.......2001-12-12
As I leafed through the pages of this keepsake book, goosebumps appeared on my skin as well as tears. It brings back the horific day in clear view.
I'm ordering three more for my childrens hope chests.
A superb photohraphic account of that terrible day..........2001-12-03
This superb pictorial remembrance of the events of September 11 comes to us from the editors of New York magazine. Rather than focusing on all of the events of that day, this book simply focuses on the attacks on the World Trade Center. What results is a wonderful photographic record, with an emphasis not on the attacks themselves, but rather on the post-attack heroism and recovery efforts.
If you are looking for a book that will anger you and yet still manage to raise your spirits, get this book. The strength of the American people and the savagery of the Islamic terrorists is well displayed in this work.
