Brennan Manning wrote The Ragamuffin Gospel "for the bedraggled, beat-up, and burnt-out," the marginalized folks to whom Jesus ministered: the children, the ill, the tax collectors, the women. In other words, the ragamuffins. Manning understands better than most that behind our facades of order and self-assurance are inadequacies that can find healing only in Jesus. While the powerful and religious elite challenged him, Jesus embraced and healed and fed the needs of the ragamuffins. Jesus delivered love, healing, and, most of all, grace.

Grace is defined as "the freely given and unmerited favor and love of God." But, as Manning points out, we have "twisted the gospel of grace into religious bondage and distorted the image of God into an eternal, small-minded bookkeeper." In reality, God offers us grace immeasurable. Brennan Manning gently encourages us to embrace that grace in the face of our greatest needs. And Manning certainly knows whereof he speaks, having taken a journey from priesthood and academic achievement through a collapse into alcoholism. Manning came face to face with his need, finally abandoning himself to grace. And he invites us now to join him in a life of grace.

Manning is without doubt one of the most eloquent writers on the subject of grace because he openly shares his own pain and struggle to help readers deal with failure and inadequacy. And he sweetly challenges them to do the same. --Patricia Klein

    Book Description

A Furious Love Is Hot on Your Trail!

Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. In this newly repackaged edition—now with full appendix, study questions, and the author’s own epilogue, “Ragamuffin Ten Years Later,” Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth. The Father beckons us to Himself with a “furious love” that burns brightly and constantly. Only when we truly embrace God’s grace can we bask in the joy of a gospel that enfolds the most needy of His flock—the “ragamuffins.”

    Are you bedraggled, beat-up, burnt-out?

Most of us believe in God’s grace—in theory. But somehow we can’t seem to apply it in our daily lives. We continue to see Him as a small-minded bookkeeper, tallying our failures and successes on a score sheet.

Yet God gives us His grace, willingly, no matter what we’ve done. We come to Him as ragamuffins—dirty, bedraggled, and beat-up. And when we sit at His feet, He smiles upon us, the chosen objects of His “furious love.”

Brennan Manning ’s now-classic meditation on grace and what it takes to access it—simple honesty—has changed thousands of lives. Now with a Ragamuffin’s thirty-day spiritual journey guide, it will change yours, too.

    Story Behind the Book

The world assigns value to people using measurable standards. Someone is a successful student if she receives As. Someone is a strong athlete if he runs five miles a day. The Lord, however, knows nothing of standards. The Ragamuffin Gospel was inspired by Brennan Manning after he discovered firsthand what it means to live by grace instead of performance. His words bring new life and sweet refreshment to Christians who are tired of never measuring up.

5 out of 5 stars And oft-quoted master of reality.......2007-10-14

For many years and up until just recently, all my emails would go out with this signature attached. "The greatest cause of atheism in the world today, is Christians, who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. This, is what an unbelieving world, simply finds, unbelievable." I wrote that entirely without looking it up, so much has it become ingrained in my thoughts. Some of you will recognize this quote, especially if you like Christian rock/hiphop group DC Talk as they use this quote on the start of one of their songs. It wasn't until about 2 years ago someone emailed me and corrected me about it's origin. Turns out it was actually Brennan Manning that first penned it. So the author of The Ragamuffin Gospel has been having an impact on me much longer than I have known about him or his books. Well as I have said last week, I am now listening to far more books in audio rather than reading them. And as you can see from the reviews I have been able to do, it really does enable me to "read" far more books than I normally would. The bookmarking feature of Apples iPod just makes it so versatile. The computer will keep playing from where I last stopped on my iPod and vice versa.

The Ragamuffin Gospel. Brennan Manning. So who is this book for? It's primarily for new believers, Pastors, and anyone else who has a heartbeat. If I had a name, I would write a book like this myself, for without wanting to sound conceited Brennan echoes the cry of my heart. I have been in ministry a long time. Long enough to have seen the incredible injustices so many suffer at the hands of those who hold title and position in the body. I am not sure they'd like to meet Brennan Manning in a dark alley, but then again, I am not sure anything but grace would flow from Brennan at that time. I do not see how this book could have been written without many a tear having been spilt. He so perfectly pictures the problems of our current fascination with turning Church into businesses, and contrasts it with the way of Jesus. Here, Brennan says, is a Church for ragamuffins, misfits, outcasts, delinquents, rejects, etc, this is the Church of Jesus Christ. But look, in today's Churches, we reserve the front seating for the Pastors and Elders, or the big givers. It is business as usual. The former are not welcome. They may be put up with, but hardly welcome. With gentle elegance, Brennan lifts the shroud from our eyes and shows us a picture of the true Church of Jesus Christ.

A Pastor I knew in New Zealand once objected when I told him that I don't think the Church in its current state is what Jesus really wants us to have. Ironically he calls himself a reformer. If it's ok, why reform it? Of course he would object, he was a Pastor. Not so fast. Today, many leaders in the Church are seeing the light. It's easy to point fingers at the likes of Rob Bell, he's young, but when Brennan Manning who has more memories stretching back longer than the road is stretching ahead, someone who has walked the talk the better part of half a century, we need to take notice. The Church is not where it needs to be, and that is plainly clear to any honest Christian leader. It is after-all, PLAINLY obvious to those outside of the Church. This book helps us. It's not just cute pop psychology, it's a clear view of how things are and how we can change them so the ragamuffins, the ones Jesus spent his time with, once again become the ones we spend our time with.

Grace over judgment. Grace over dogma. Grace. As I have discovered first hand on my own journey, grace is like a four letter word in many ministries. For those that have been hurt, are being hurt, or have been accused of being the hurter, The Ragamuffin Gospel will bring a much needed clarity of vision. To those who are ragamuffins and know it, and want to see Christ's vision of the Church come to fruition, this will be like rocket-fuel for your soul.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, Grace defined!.......2007-09-23

Manning simply and eloquently defines and describes the Amazing Grace of God's salavation that is available to all of humanity...

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing Grace.......2007-07-23

So often Christianity is viewed as judgmental and legalistic and the heart of Christianity is lost. Jesus was the friend of sinners and accepted and encouraged the downtrodden and those rejected by the religious elite. Manning so eloquently brings to life the meaning of Grace. He paints numerous word pictures to help illustrate what Grace really means.

Reading this book was like taking a fresh breath of air. I would recommend it to anyone, especially anyone struggling with believing that God truly loves them just as they are, in spite of all their terrible sins.

5 out of 5 stars Always Good News.......2007-07-08

Brennan Manning does an excellent job of reaching out to those of us who feel we have so miserably failed to live up to our calling. He vividly demonstrates the good news once again that Jesus came to save sinners and reflects the incredible, unconditional love of his Father. For anyone who needs to hear the good news again, this is the book.

    4 out of 5 stars Re-Luthering.......2007-07-04

In the epilogue to Ragamuffin Gospel, "The Scandal of Grace," Manning informs the reader that one of his Roman Catholic critics told him that he "had out Luthered Luther." I don't know that you can "out-Luther" Luther --- but Manning is at least close here.

If you let it, this book will take you through a path that not many people go on. You'll go to Spiritual AA.

Manning, a recovering alcoholic himself, describes the faith life of a Christian as really only a recovering sinner ever could. He is upfront about his disease. He knows that he isn't God. He knows that He doesn't even deserve to sneeze in God's direction. He shows the most comfortable Christian that they are still a sinner even though they have a nice family and go to church every Sunday. He goes even farther. He makes sure that you know that if you're not actively involved in being empty, in being a ragamuffin, that you're not living the Christian life as it was intended to be lived.

In short, he tells you what a Ragamuffin is - it's a sinner-saint. It is someone who has no right, no claim, and no worth who is passionately and wildly embraced by a savior.

The book is a great choice for a devotional read. It will bring not only a new perspective on your current place before God, but it will show you that your ultimate place is with God, singing in the joy of His free grace.

It is a message of grace for anyone brave enough to consider themselves one of God's ragamuffins.

    Book Description

No more punch lines that just slipped away. No more names on the tip of your tongue. No more senior moments! Drawing on cutting-edge neurological research, how to keep your brain alive: 83 neurobic exercises brings help to everyone whose memory is starting to slip. Devised by Dr. Lawrence Katz, a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center, and Manning Rubin, author of 60 Ways to Relieve Stress in 60 Seconds, here is a regimen of mental cross-training that can be done anywhere, by anyone, at any time of day. The premise is simple: When you exercise the brain, you release natural growth factors called neurotrophins, which in turn enhance the brain's level of fitness. And nothing so easily stimulates the brain as breaking routines and using the five senses in new and unexpected ways. So if you're right-handed, wake up tomorrow and brush your teeth with your left hand. Or close your eyes before you get into the car and then get the key into the ignition. Every time you open a new circuit in your brain, it's like doing a round of mental sit-ups, without the pain.

"Keep Your Brain Alive" offers some fairly standard advice on how to keep the mind agile as one ages. You've heard it before--be social, learn new things and new ways of doing routine tasks, use all the senses. The unique aspect of this particular book is the suggested exercises, but here the author veers away from the practical a little too strongly for my taste. He's big on exercising the sense of smell, and recommends driving around with a bunch of bottles with fragrance soaked pieces of sponge. Then uncork a particular one when you pass a specific place to fix it more firmly in your mind. I think if I did this my husband would begin having serious doubts about my state of mind--with good reason! I thought some suggestions could be dangerous, such as wandering around your home with lights off to activate the other senses--not a good idea for an older person, just as "uncork bottle while driving" is not a good idea. The scientific explanations are excellent--very clear and easy to understand--but I'd take the exercises with a big grain of salt!

    2 out of 5 stars Rip.......2007-02-14

I'm very disappointed with this book. It's based on fundamentally solid brain science and offers the following to strengthen your brain (i.e. build and activate new neural connections): "1. Involve one or more of your senses in a novel (new) context, 2. Break a routine activity in an unexpected, nontrivial way."

Basically, by breaking the routine and forcing yourself to learn new things or different ways of doing old things, new connections will develop within your brain and create thought processing and longevity benefits. If you're right-handed, start forcing yourself to use your left hand (I was taught this aspect almost 30 years ago). Take different routes to work. Start using other senses to take in data. You see a widget. You normally recognize it as such and move on. Here, it is suggested to pick it up, feel it, examine it, smell it, listen to it and more connections will develop. Go out and socialize. Nothing challenges the mind more than interacting with new people.

O.K. This is all good, valuable information. But the proceeding paragraph pretty much sums it up. The other 100 or so pages in this book are fluff, with examples of achieving novelty. This is appropriate for a magazine article, not a nine dollar book. In fact, it seems suspiciously similar to a recent Time article on brain science. Wow, this was churned out fast.

5 out of 5 stars Abba's Child by Brannon Manning.......2007-09-19

This book has been such a blessing to my life. It has helped me know God's love for me and His awesome grace and reconciliation. I have read it at least twenty times and get something new every time as it challenges me to believe in ways that do not seem natural for me. I have shared this book with numerous others and most of them have told me that it has had a major impact on the way they see God the Father now. I can not recommend this book enough. Jack deFluiter

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-08-02

If you ever wondered why you behave or react to things the way you do this is a excellent book to help you understand why and how you got that way. I wish I had read something like this 30 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Once Again, Brennan Manning delivers!.......2007-06-03

I have to admit that I was skeptical in beginning this book. Could this really measure up to 'Ragamuffin Gospel'? Or would I be left disappointed? Surprisingly, I was not at all disappointed. In fact, I would even go as far as to say this book surpasses "Ragamuffin Gospel!" Manning beautifully describes the intense and fierce love of Jesus for us, and states the necessity of teaching the Church today this truth. I recommend, like Manning, to read this book slowly, meditatively, and prayerfully.

    5 out of 5 stars Abba's Child - Balancing the Criticisms.......2007-05-23

"Abba's Child" is, in my opinion, the quintessential Brennan Manning, though I recognize some may feel that is not necessarily a positive. I do understand and give merit to a few of the criticisms, especially of his use of Merton. However, I believe that Manning is writing here to a very real and very deep spiritual need, foundational to most other understanding of God. Something that Merton, regardless of other points of personal conviction and practice, understood well--something that many would-be theologians often overlook. Lest we forget, the Apostle Paul (likely educated under a Greco-Roman system as well as in Jewish theology) was a master and proponent of using secular philosophy and non-Christian religious writings to illustrate his points and to share the truth of Christ's love. If I am not mistaken, his contemporaries were critical of him for the same reasons many today are critical of Manning. Paul's use of what amounted to first century pop-psychology and non-Judeo-Christian philosophical elements did not, in any way, compromise the truth of his message. He used these things to illustrate truth in relevant and engaging ways; to break through cultural and intellectual barriers; and to single out truth.

So I say, before you make your case, test Manning. Test the truth, gentleness--the audacity of Father's love. Meditate on it. Take it in. Not necessarily following Manning's personal path, but certainly exploring some of the ways he suggests one might... can... should discover such love in truth. There is one way to God, through Jesus. But biblically speaking, I believe there were many ways in which people made their way to Jesus. Manning eloquently, passionately, poignantly speaks to the barriers that have kept many from Him.

By the way, "Posers, Fakers, and Wannabes" is a student adaptation of "Abba's Child." While, in general, I am not a fan of audience adapted works, I found it to be equally as powerful-- not the least watered or dumbed down.

    4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-21

I have read nearly all of Brennan Manning's books. This is a great book about grace in our lives. It is definitely a good read.

This is a good book for people who are interested in computational linguists, machine
learning experts who are looking for new application domains and in general for someone who wants an introduction to statistical computational linguistics.

The book is self contained and very well written. It treats most of the general statistical approaches to language processing such as language models, smoothing, etc.. in an excellent, but introductory manner. The book is a good start for any one looking to enter statistical nlp, however for advanced readers who would like to see the cutting edge of statistical computational linguistics they should look somewhere else.

Only buy this book if you want a very technical book about this subject. I bought this book because I was generally interested in this research field... and I never read it. If you are a researcher or a student studying this field, then this might be a good book. Otherwise, there are books that you will probably enjoy more.

5 out of 5 stars Self-contained and instructive, read the TOC first!.......2002-05-26

Compared to the slightly overrated Jurafsky and Martin's classic, this book aims less targets but hits them all more precisely, completely and satisfactory for the reader. That is, just to give you an idea on what to expect, instead of attacking 200 problems on 2 pages each, this book attacks only 40 problems on 10 pages each.

So, read the TOC before you buy the book: if you find your topics there, you're done, you are saved, buy it and be happy. In contrast, you can buy Jurafsky's book without caring to read the TOC: your problem is likely to be mentioned there but it's quite unlikely to be detailed enough to satisfy you.

Some introductory chapters take too much space and some advanced topics are missing. But the book is actually named "Foundations of..." so it seems to deliver precisely what it promisses, which is a precious and rare accomplishment by itself. I recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Well done adaptation of a great book.......2007-04-29

"Abba's Child" is, in my opinion, the quintessential Brennan Manning. Though I have thoroughly enjoyed all that he has written. I have read and reread the book many times over as there is too much to process at first pass.

"Posers, Fakers, and Wannabes" is a student adaptation of "Abba's Child." While, in general, I am not a fan of audience adapted works, I had heard good things and purchased a copy to give away to a younger friend of mine. Of course I wanted to peruse it before giving it away and found myself reading it through, enthralled by the original content with new language. I found it to be equally as powerful-- not the least watered or dumbed down.

If you have read any other Manning, or if you are an avid reader and contemplative thinker, go ahead and buy "Abba's Child." But, regardless of who you are, "Posers, Fakers, and Wannabes" is a well done adaptation of a great book. I don't believe you will be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Fr. Manning preaches a false gospel - don't be fooled!!!!!.......2006-09-13

Fr. Brennan Manning is a Franciscan priest who attempted to marry without being dispensed from his vow of celibacy in 1982. He has since peddled a false gospel that is built around the idea that God's pardon is unconditional - a euphemism for saying that you can be forgiven for your sins without repenting and amending your life. This is a lie, and a defense mechanism Fr. Manning has evolved to assuage his guilty conscience. If you really want to seek the Mercy of God, I suggest you read "Divine Mercy in my soul", the diary of St. Faustina, avaulable here on Amazon.com. God's Mercy is endless, but you cannot be pardoned if you are not sorry; Fr. Manning's false gospel will do you no more spiritual good than it has done him. He needs your prayers and your pity - not your money or your reading time.

4 out of 5 stars Dripping with Wisdom, Solace.......2005-10-05

This wonderful book reinforces the notion (absurd to many) that "God loves us exactly the way we are - but that he loves us too much to let us stay like this." A true shot in the arm for anyone seeking the truth about God and self, and wondering what's next in life.

Despite the disarming title, Manning has not written a "self-help" book, he's written about divine help, found through surrender and brokenness before God. Every page drips with trenchant observations, amusing anecdotes, quotes from notable thinkers and philosophers (Carl Jung among them) and quotes from the Bible (using the wonderfully direct and earthy translation from "The Message").

"Posers, Fakes & Wannabes" is so full of wisdom, humor, and "Big Ideas", I found myself savoring the opportunity to spend time with this book, reading, and rereading many passages, thinking about my own life and about God.

And, no, this book is not "heady stuff" for academics. Written in plain spoken prose, this book is appropriate for anyone, from teenagers to geezers.

A must-have for "the seekers" among us.

4 out of 5 stars Manning focuses on what's real, and what's an act........2004-05-08

If you have even a passing interest in Christianity, but struggle to know what to do with the often conflicting behaviors exhibited by many who claim to all be following the same basic belief system, then this book is an excellent look at what it could and should be. How is it that the message of the Gospel is often acted out on a stage for the benefit of our own ego?

Brennan Manning has an uncanny ability to sift through the surface, and dive straight into the places we often do not want to acknowledge exist within all of us. In this book he tackles the "image conscious" Christian, more concerned with how they look, than what they are doing. In it he exposes just how far off the message of love and peace we have often gone. With all of our masks, pettiness, vanity and ego we consume ourselves with, where is our focus on our true cause; to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves?

Of particular interest is how he manages to be blunt and direct in many very personal ways, yet all in his usual self effacing style which leaves one motivated not judged. When reading Manning, one is left with the overwhelming sense that they are simply in a conversation with someone who is speaking on their level. While I know a few too distracted with dogma and doctrine to understand his perspective, he writes about the very real struggle to let go of ego and image, and focus on what is really important. His looks into the problems of racism, homophobia, and neglect of the poor among Christians are especially powerful considering they contrast so much with loving and reaching out to others as Jesus did.

Although the editing and copy itself is at times a bit distracting with its multi-type fonts on every page, it does allow you to take bite sized bits of information and ponder the meaning behind it. Rarely have I stopped so many times while reading to reflect on my own issues. An excellent read and good insights!

We suffer from the disease of melancholy, the sickness of self-hatred, the darkness of doubt. Yet, author Brennan Manning sees the place of our worst despair as a tangible starting point for the remedy: a ruthless trust in God. In his sequel to The Ragamuffin Gospel, Manning pries us loose from our shame, our mistakes, and our doubts and encourages us to let go and trust God--ruthlessly.

It's been 40 years since author Brennan Manning was "ambushed by God" and on the far side of despair himself. As a gutter-alcoholic who was completely broken, he found an unshakable trust in the love of Christ for him as he was then, not as he could be or is now.

Authenticity with God is critical in developing this trust relationship. In his own inimitable voice, Manning tells us, "Raw honesty with Jesus about our doubts and anxieties, our lust and laziness, our shabby prayer life and stale religiosity, our mixed motives and divided hearts, is the risk we take in the certainty of being acceptable and accepted. It is the full and mature expression of invincible trust." Over the years, this trust ripens into confidence and bears certain fruit, such as gratitude to God. But it's not always easy, he admits. "Ruthless trust is hanging tough in the dark nights, when we are plunged into desolation but know that absence of God is only apparent."

For author Brennan Manning--and for us, if we choose--ruthless trust is not just a concept, it's a way of life. As Manning observes, "Ill winds may blow, more character defects may surface, sickness may visit, and friends will surely die, but a stubborn irrefutable certainty persists that God is with us and loves us in our struggle to be faithful." Now, that's ruthless trust. You won't fail to be moved. --Cindy Crosby

    5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-10-22

This was an amazing book. If you have trouble trusting the Lord, or even if you don't, I would highly recommend this book. Brennan Manning has some great things to say and writes in a way that is very engaging.

    4 out of 5 stars Brennan Manning.......2007-03-11

While I like to read a great number of Christian authors, Brennan Manning is an author I like. I always go back to his work.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-01-16

As always Brennan Manning has delivered another masterpiece. His books are to be read and studied for the wealth of material in them and Ruthless Trust is no exception. From the first pages until the very last the reader is challenged, in a very positive way, to examine their trust in the Lord. Brennan shows us how we, in this modern world, do not really trust God in the way that Jesus asks us to. He then goes on to demonstrate practical ways to achieve that level of trust. I would recommend this book to all unhesitatingly!

    5 out of 5 stars Goes Further.......2006-08-09

This book is a great follow up to Manning's best book: The Ragamuffin Gospel. This book picks up where that one left off and goes even further. So if you like his earlier work, then I recommend this book as well.

    Book Description

As Americans hunger for home improvement, Lowe's and Home Depot have risen to the status of weekend hotspots. Home-design shows like Trading Spaces are flourishing up and down the television dial, mirroring the national nesting craze. And the most-remodeled room in the nest is the kitchen.

While remodeling can be a stressful experience, Everything and the Kitchen Sink demystifies the kitchen design and remodeling process with a humorous, down-to-earth, and candid approach that lets readers know exactly what they're in for-and how to triumph.

Savvy homeowners really need to be involved in every step of a kitchen remodel, whether they're leaving the labor to the pros or rolling up their sleeves to tackle the project solo. Planning and foresight are crucial to a successful and (relatively) painless remodeling project.

Researching design options, hiring contractors, budgeting, making smart purchases, cutting costs, financing, surviving the chaos of installations, and effective problem-solving are explained in straightforward, user-friendly detail.

While learning how to successfully navigate the process, readers will also explore hundreds of exciting and innovative ideas for creating a dream kitchen at any price point. Floor plans, diagrams, and beautiful four-color and black-and-white photographs help readers visualize their own finished projects.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Your Perfect Kitchen.......2007-04-04

Compare materials before you start your remodel, and also get some cost-cutting tips for creating your dream kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars Great Design Ideas (and a Fun Read, Too!).......2007-02-12

This charming, clever and extremely user friendly book was a Godsend during our kitchen remodel. There are lots of helpful comparison charts so you can see the pros and cons of different materials before you buy them (not just what they tell you when they're trying to sell you stuff, but the honest truth, like how granite stains if you don't seal it regularly, or how painted cabinets crack over time). There's great advice about design styles, and about designing your kitchen to fit both your budget and your family's lifestyle (even including the dos and don'ts for families with small kids, families with pets, people who are neatness challenged, etc.).

There's also a lot of nice extras, like cost cutting tips, advice about financing, how to interview installers or designers so you don't end up with a lemon, how to budget realistically, and everything you wanted to know about product, from cabinet wood species to faucet finishes to flooring to high-tech appliances.

It's clear that the writers know their stuff, and I would suggest anyone even thinking about remodeling their kitchen read this as part of the starter package! You won't find better. One caveat: This is not the book that's going to walk you through doing the job yourself from A to Z. It doesn't teach you how to do your own electrical, or give you a crash course in laying flooring. But then again, as the authors will tell you, if you're going to do this yourself, you need more skills than what you can get just reading a book (and it could be dangerous to think otherwise). Skilled do it yourselfers will find this most useful for the product information (of which there's plenty), design style info and insider tips.

Overall, we found this to be enormously helpful, plus great fun to read. Many of these books are dry as dust, but this was engaging and very funny in parts -- yet still very informative. If you have designs on a new kitchen, be sure to read this book first! We highly recommend it!

2 out of 5 stars Not much substance and not fun to read.......2007-02-12

I read this book quickly and probably won't use it again before we remodel the kitchen. This is the fifth book I've read on kitchens and I purchased this one based on the reviews here. Like another reviewer said, this book is a handy companion if you are needing some design ideas and plan on working with a designer in the future. I guess I was expecting more substance.

The authors try really hard to be funny. They are also assuming their audience is female. I didn't enjoy this approach and found the writing boorish. There are some useful things in the book, but these things are far and few between.

My favorite book so far is "Great Kitchens: Design Ideas from America's Top Chefs".

2 out of 5 stars More of a design and idea book.......2006-09-19

If your looking for a how to book on remodeling your kitchen this is not it. This is more of a book from a idea and design standpoint for remodeling.

5 out of 5 stars To the rescue!.......2005-05-14

I've been waiting since February 1981 to do something about my kitchen. That's the month we moved into our house. Everything and the Kitchen Sink has come into my life -not a moment too soon! - to move me from mere contemplation to actual accomplishment. It is a thorough guide to redoing this most important room in the house. (I mean, think about it. Without food in your life, there'd be no need for any other rooms.) But wait! There's more! It's Readable. In fact, downright amusing.

    A few highlights for me:

The Introduction. How many times do you even read the introduction to a book, let alone enjoy it, let further alone find a personal message to you in it? The Introduction reminds me of the centrality of the kitchen in my family life and most emphatically assures me that I should not have to wait decades to make my kitchen functional and aesthetically pleasing.

The quizzes. Little quizzes and questionnaires throughout the book helped me articulate not only our personal style (Busy Slobs, or words to that effect...) but also what's been keeping us from getting a start on this kitchen. We've been of two minds (my husband's and mine) about how long we're likely to stay in this house. We know when we sell a developer will probably just knock it down and start over. That argues for not bothering, or at least for not putting much money into what we do bother with. But something clearly has to be done. For one thing, the original designer of our house obviously thought that a woman's place was not only in the kitchen, but alone down a hallway. Yes, the sink is in an "L" away from everything else that matters. The passageway is so narrow that cooperating in cooking or washing dishes becomes a clown routine in blocking, waiting, bumping, squeezing by. Then there's the fact that two-thirds of the cupboards assume the person using them is pushing six feet tall. (I'm short.) Add to that two dogs of various shepherd (i.e., stick CLOSE to the herd) persuasions - a factor no other book or magazine I've ever read on this subject has even acknowledged - and you've got a recipe for daily frustration. Not good.

Here's where Everything and the Kitchen Sink comes to the rescue. There are marvelous pictures. And useful budget charts. And constant encouragement to figure out how we really use our kitchen, and plan from that base. And other helpful hints sprinkled throughout the book. I can feast my eyes on the fancy stoves and state of the art refrigerators and duplicate dishwashers, but I can acknowledge that I am destined to be a "rustic" gal. Paint will be my friend. Shiny stainless steel is out (expensive and not good for slobs anyway), "distressed," folky, and mobile is in. I'm having great fun figuring it out. Carts and drawer units on wheels will replace the built-in cabinets. (We'll take the old ones to the basement and "improve" our laundry area - following another suggestion in the book about how to recycle and minimize waste. And if/when we move, we'll take the new ones with us.) It's more important to us to share the kitchen and the tasks in it than to have an immense sink, so the double-deep behemoth that fills the hallway will come out and a sink sized for mobile homes will replace it. This will enable us to get by each other without having to take time for a minuet. Heck, maybe even stand side by side to wash the dishes.

I've taken samples of the ancient earthquake-cracked plaster and dog-water-warped floor tiles to the lab (one of the book's very helpful suggestions). They'll tell me if there's asbestos in either so I can proceed safely. I've calculated the costs (with the help of worksheets in the book) and strategized the financing. I've measured it all out and drawn my plans to scale. I've pondered the traffic flow, factored in the canines.

After twenty-four years, I'm ready to start. Thanks to Everything and the Kitchen Sink.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-01-01

there isn't one chapter that does not leave the reader unchallenged. i truly admire the way the author makes sure that he does not cut corners or water down the gospel. the author makes sure, by the grace of GOD, that no human excuse or lie is left unexposed. it is essentially a book about repentance and Truth, because true repentance of sins and the heartfelt acknowledgement of Jesus Christ as LORD is the only way for us humans to think like Jesus. Without these two things, you can learn about Jesus in an intellectual way, but not the way we ought to, the way He desires us to and it will always be jampacked with untruth. this book, by GOD's grace, will exhort, encourage and convict.

and as I always say, read it with your Bible in hand.

5 out of 5 stars Another Manning Classic.......2006-10-24

Brennan Manning forever secured his place as an important theologian with The Ragamuffin Gospel. If he never wrote another book, he has served Christianity well with one of the most important books ever written about the faith.

But in his book The Importance of Living Foolish, Manning continues his quest to promote a belief in Christ the recognizes the folly of the modern world and its preoccupation with foolish, fleeting things.

At the same time, as in The Ragamuffin Gospel, Manning presents the unvarnished Jesus, who was loving, tender, kind, and gentle, but who spoke truth to power, was brutally honest, and was not dismissive of sin.

The Importance of Being Foolish stands on its own merits, and Brennan Manning continues to grow as one of this era's greatest standard bearers of Christianity.

5 out of 5 stars Puts into words my own view.......2006-09-17

I've always thought the Christian message to be a radical rejection of worldy values. But what's generally preached is a watered down version of this message. Manning boldly and in his familiar style asserts that what the world views as foolish is the wisdom of God. It's a tough message but a wonderful one.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-09-18

Once again Manning calls us out beyond the darkness of pharisaical competition for heavens gate. Where the light of gods unbounded LOVE cradles us and reminds us that because we are so loved, we must love as well. Bless this guy, he has stood up after many falls, and I pray he will continue to enlighten us.

    5 out of 5 stars Power packed.......2005-08-25

Although my first Manning book, I can see why he is so well respected.

This is a very personal and challenging presentation of spiritual growth that differs from sanitized Christianity. This is not the prosperity gospel.

He doesn't pretend to have all of the answers. He also doesn't spell out many of his points. The title for example is never explained. At least not directly.

A book that would challenge anybody. Can't wait to read it again.

In the day to day grind of higher education administration, student affairs professionals know that different institutional types--whether a small liberal arts college, a doctoral intensive institution, or a community college--require different practical approaches. Despite this, most student affairs literature emphasizes a "one size fits all" approach to practice. In this book, leading scholars Kathleen Manning, Jillian Kinzie, and John Schuh advocate a new approach by presenting thirteen possible models of student affairs practice. These models are based on a qualitative, multi-institutional case study research project involving 20 institutions of higher education varying by type, size and mission. By accessibly presenting different types of intuitions that have all experienced high levels of student engagement and graduation rates the authors set out to discover the policies, practices, and programs that can contribute to student success.
