Customer Reviews:
Great colors!!.......2002-05-18
This big book of selected sunday cartoons is great. If you alread saw this on the newspapers or online you will get a new vaued experiece by the quality of the printed color. Also the quality of the art is great!!
Wonderful Comic Strip!.......2002-02-10
I fell in love with this comic strip in Vallejo California. When I moved, I was so disappointed to find that the local newspaper didn't carry it. Thank goodness for computers! I found the comic strip online, and now receive it daily in an email! The books are wonderful "pick me ups". Rose and her family, experience life with love and humor. You'll find yourself with a smile on your face as you read this book.
Smiles on every page : ).......2002-01-26
I received this book as a gift this past holiday season. I must say it was one of my most favorite presents. It will bring much joy to anyone who prefers to smile and laugh instead of frown and grumble.
I pick it up each time I'm feeling down, and it lifts my spirits. Thanks so much Pat Brady for creating this comic and putting out whole books for us to enjoy.
I lost a pet shortly after Christmas and this book in part helped me keep my head up and my tears at bay. I HIGHLY advise buying it if you love Rose Is Rose, and if you don't know the strip I can't think of a better way to get to know the whole gang, and share in all the fun. I can't wait to add more of these books to my collection. -Heather :)
Magic in 128 Pages.......2000-11-26
I first came across Rose is Rose in my local newspaper. After the first strip, I was hooked. This book is a great compilation of many classic Sunday Rose is Rose comics done in beautiful full color. This is a great read when you're feeling down, because the love contained in the book almost jumps right at you and envelops you. Although that may sound a bit sappy, there very little doubt that after you read this book, you'll have as big a smile as Pasquale does in the book. If you're a Rose is Rose fan, or even if you've never seen this comic before, it's a great buy.
Gorgeous artwork, but a bit sappy in some places.......2000-06-28
I have simply no idea how Pat Brady was raised as a young boy, but he could sure create such a magical, fun-filled fantasy world full of bottomless unconditional love, pure childhood innocence, and endless flights of wild imagination. Where else would you find parents who are totally in touch with their "inner children" and are totally, completely in love with each other even though it is already years after their honeymoon trip. Thus you get a family who truly knows how to ENJOY life! So here are some of the Gumbos' best adventures collected together in FULL COLOR. However, there are still a few drawbacks to living in a world like this. It's a itty bit smothering at times and a little tad too cutesy at other times. So you might want to come up for some air every now and then. And it's a bit irky the way that little guardian angel really coddled and worshipped the kid as if he is God's greatest gift to the whole universe (even though Pasquale himself really knows better). In addition, the frequent use of the bright orange-yellow sunset color for the sky and Peekaboo exploding into a gigantic furball are getting a tad tedious lately. But other than that, let's say hats off to Pat Brady's marvelous ability to fantasize and thus capture it all on the paper!

Good for older modern roses.......2006-11-05
This is an excellent book for those gardeners wanting information on many of the older hybrid teas and floribundas plus climbers that are carried by only specialized rose nurseries. This book also tells it like it is and so you get the negative aspects of some roses. Yes the book is VERY large but perfect to raise a small child to the table.
The Ultimate Rose Book.......2005-10-10
This is such a lovely book, it's worth owning just to look at the beautiful photographs of roses. However, it offers much more. There are full descriptions of each rose, including origin, developer, growth, fragrance, etc. I needed to find a rose developed in Germany. Using this book I created quite a long list of potential roses. When I located a grower of the rose I wanted, it was interesting to see this book prominently displayed among his reference works. Highly recommended.
Best Coffee Table Rose Book.......2004-09-19
This is the first Rose Book in my collection; it is responsible for my interest in roses. It is the biggest book of my rose book collection; in height, thickness or weight. Its production qualities are high and more than a decade after purchasing it, it is a book I still hold dear.
Over 1500 roses are presented, and for each there is a photo. The writing is clear and concise. And more than any other reference, we hear the writer's voice. When Macoboy particularly likes a rose, we know it. If he were writing a scientific reference, this may not be quite appropriate, but this personal voice brings us a step closer to viewing the roses as he does. And this draws us in.
A few bits of crucial information are listed in tabular form, the rose's breeder, its class, and how fragrant the rose is. Entries are listed alphabetically in three main sections: Species Roses, Miniature Roses, All other roses.
The book was published just after the commercial success of Austin's first remontant English roses and a handful of these roses are included.
But almost twenty years after its first release (the edition I write about was printed in the late 1980's), the book is beginning to look and feel dated. There has been a huge amount of work in the area of minis and this section seems quite dated. A significant portion of the Hybrid Tea roses and floribundas are not in commerce - not even at specialty nurseries. And many of the most popular of these classes do not appear. To make matters worse, a noticable portion of the roses Macoboy treasures were distributed only in Australia, so European and American gardeners never would have had a crack at them.
The photos are a mixed bag. On one hand almost every rose about which he writes is photographed. This is a monumental achievement. Few rose books come so close to complete photographic coverage as this one, and any that acheive full photographic coverage are less encyclopedic in scope and/ or present smaller photos. This may be the most photographically generous rose book in print.
Most of the rose photos are pretty good. Many are excellent. And some of the excellent ones fill a whole large page. The layout is large and the feeling it creates is lush and luxurious. But a few of the photos are seriously flawed. One photo, for instance, is of a rose that is waving back and forth madly in the wind and all we can see about the rose is that the flower is reddish - the whole photo is a big smudge. And there are a few cases in which we have serious questions about color reproduction.
So who should buy such a book? Well, if you are a rose-lover and wish to draw someone else into the field, this may be the best book to do it. The lavish illustration and infectious writing will do the trick better than just about any other book. And if you are a rose-lover and you want a coffee table book on roses, this may be the best choice. Or, if you know someone who is a little interested in gardening but knows nothing of roses and is afraid to take the plunge, this would be a good introductory gift.
If you just want a reference, get Botanica's Roses it is more up-to-date and it presents more roses. And visit RoseFile.com for other info on roses and to get help finding more books about roses at Amazon.com.
detailed, classic book.......2003-06-06
I love this book. I have been wanting to buy it for 2 years now and finally found it on amazon.com for much cheaper. At some stores this book goes for $100!
I love it because it is HISTORIC and GOOD FOR GARDENERS! I like how the author talks about the rose in a mythical and realistic point of view. He gives history and information for scientists.
I have never loved a book as much as I love this one. I treasure it. I am never going to let go of it. I especially love the front cover. The roses are all huddled together in different colors, and they almost appear as if they are people. The photography is magic!
Simply said, if you love romantic style books with also some useful information about gardening this the one for you.
Not the best book available!.......2002-07-03
I'm sorry but this book just didn't do it for me! It is too large and heavy, not to mention expensive. The photgraphs aren't as clear as other books (namely Botanica's Roses)and it doesn't included many of the most popular roses.
Yes, it does describe each rose, if fragrant, how often it blooms and any known diseases, but then so do other books!
My advice is to buy Botanica's Roses. It is paperback, much smaller and lightweight (ideal for taking to the nursery).
So save the [price] and get the better book!

Book Description
The Color of Guilt and Innocence: Racial Profiling and Police Practices in America is the only book of its kind to receive national acclaim by scholars, special interest groups, and law enforcement organizations as the most comprehensive book ever written on the subject of racial profiling by police. The book is unique in that it objectively explores this controversial subject from the perspective of victims, civil rights advocates, and law enforcement officers.
Customer Reviews:
Takes an urgent and serious topic head-on .......2004-10-30
The Color Of Guilt & Innocence: Racial Profiling And Police Practices In America by law enforcement veteran Steve Holbert and attorney Lisa Rose is a highly readable discussion of the all too common practice of racial profiling in America. Discussing data collection and analysis programs used to help determine whether racial profiling takes place, issues of civil liberty, police reaction to accusations, and much more, The Color Of Guilt & Innocence takes an urgent and serious topic head-on without losing itself in excessively confusing terminology or philosophy. Highly recommended.
Finally somebody gets it.......2004-09-08
I have been a cop for 17 years. I was skeptical of another book on racial profiling that bashes cops. A friend of mine gave me this book to read for training, and i was very surprised that someone finally got it. There is so much about this topic that the public does not know. This book finally gives a cops perspective and tells why, in most cases, cops are not racist. Every person in America racially profiles, and this book explains why. I was fascinated by the in depth discussion in one chapter that explains racism. The book also opened by eyes to the harm the victims suffer at the hands of some cops. I think everyone has something to learn from this book. The book finally sheds some light on data collection and why it will not work. Instead of re-hashing the same old "solutions," the book actually explores some innovative new ideas that should be implemented by law enforcement. Thanks for covering this subject in a whole new light!!
Incredible and comprehensive work on this subject.......2004-09-08
I am an avid reader on the subjects of civil rights and racial profiling. This book, simply put, is incredible. I thought I had a firm opinion on the subject, but after reading this book, I really see that there are two sides to this complicated issue. All is not always what you see. This book covers every possible aspect of this subject, and delves into areas that I have not seen covered before. I had never before considered the side of law enforcement, nor did I understand what was really going on behind the scenes. I also never really viewed this subject outside of the "black and white" issue. The authors reminded me that racial profiling effects every one of us. Now I can more effectively become involved in the fight towards racial justice with a more focused understanding of why racial profiling occurs and what can be done to stop this practice. I highly recommend this book.

Perhaps the BEST book for Houston and Gulf Coast Gardeners.......2003-03-10
You will enjoy the many discoveries this book has to offer and it is beautifully illustrated with a color photograph and planting recommendations for every plant. I cannot recommend a better book for a Houston or Gulf Coast gardener, either expert or new comer, and I have read them all! It focuses on plants that truly do well HERE. It skips azaleas, hybrid roses, tulips and all the other fussy plants pushed by the local nurseries do great anywhere but here. Instead it offers beautiful and underused (and for the most part - EASY) alternatives.
Excellent.......1997-12-08
One of the best book's on Texas gardening.

Customer Reviews:
A very moving story.......2001-12-02
The Color Purple is about a young, shy, balck woman named Celie. At the beginning of the novel she is has no self confidence but at the end she has loads. With the help of other characters in the novel, Celie becomes more aware of her feelings towards other people. I thought this was a very enjoyable book to read and i'm sure there will not be one person who has read this book and didn't enjoy it.
The Color purple.......2000-12-11
I believe that the Color Purple is an amazing novel. I cried the first time I red it and now I can not seem to put it down. The Color Purple is about a black South American girl and her struggle to find her identity and also the constant battle of man verses women. She is faced with many problems but she only has a few solutions and not all her solutions are for the best.

Book Description
Tricia Rose Longing to Tell Black Women Talk About Sexuality and Intimacy 'A powerful and pioneering work. For the first time we hear the painful and poignant voices of black women in all their humanity and complexity. Do not miss this pathblazing book!' -Cornel West, University Professor of Religion, Princeton University In a culture driven by sexual and racial imagery, very few honest conversations about race, gender, and sexuality actually take place. In their absence, commonly held perceptions of black women as teenage mothers, welfare recipients, mammies, or exotic sexual playthings remain unchanged. For fear that telling their stories will fulfill society's implicit expectations about their sexuality, most black women have retreated into silence. Tricia Rose seeks to break this silence and jump-start a dialogue by presenting, for the first time, the sexual testimonies of black women who span a broad range of ages, levels of education, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Both brilliantly conceived and sensitively executed, Longing to Tell is required reading for anyone interested in issues of race and gender. 'Heartbreaking, inspiring, and brutally honest....as compelling as it is sorely needed.'-Publishers Weekly '[Tricia Rose] reminds us of the transformative power of conversation in her terrific collection of oral histories...... like great conversation, the book is provocative and inspiring......The integration of scholarship and accessible conversation rests largely in Rose's curiosity, her delight in discovery.' -Adrian Nicole LeBlanc, Newsweek 'Heartrending stuff....There are gems of stories here, rich details amid tales of heartbreaking loss.' -The Washington Post 'A landmark book....bound to be a classic of its kind: it dispels myths, stereotypes, and tales about black women while giving us the truth in all its glorious and grievous colors.' -Michael Eric Dyson, author of Why I Love Black Women 'If Freud called woman 'the dark continent of man,' then the sexuality of black women has truly been the dark continent of the African-American tradition. To read so very much of African-American literature before 1970 is to presume that black women did not experience sexual intimacy, or even discuss it. This pioneering collection by Tricia Rose is as significant to the African-American autobiographical tradition as the depiction of Janie's evolving sexuality in Their Eyes Were Watching God was to African-American literature.'-Henry Louis Gates, Jr. TRICIA ROSE is a professor of American studies at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Excellent Book.......2007-08-30
I was interested in reading this book because I am a latino male who's been involved with African American women since I can remember. I watned to read this book to inform mysself about how it was like to be an African American woman in America. I've discovered that they are very strong and have gone through alot in their lives from the stories of the many women in this book. I had read this book about a two or three years ago and it was very informative, but I know that there is still much to learn.
Hard Read.......2006-04-06
When I say "Hard", I mean this book is so strong! This book took me a while to read because I had to take breaks in between each woman's story...I could identify with more than one woman's story (I'm sure a lot of people will be able to) and that's what makes this book worth every page...I recommend it to anyone who feels as though the struggles they deal with are only theirs...
Telling it like it is..........2005-05-04
Tricia Rose turns academic research into a literary masterpiece. She interviewed 20 African American females with various ethnic backgrounds, broad range of age, and socioeconomic upbringing. Rose organized the real life commentaries on sex, intimacy, relationships, and race into a narrative that will carry you through a broad range of emotions. The women speak truth to situations that happen in every day life but are considered taboo in the African American community.
Rose starts the book with a discussion about the negative stereotypes in regards to sex and intimacy that are portrayed about the African American female in the media. The purpose of the book was developed as an attempt to answer the question, "how has the history of race, class, and gender inequality in this country affected the way that black women talk about their sexual lives?" Rose answered this question and much more. Longing to Tell is a mirror image of African American female sexuality in contemporary society as well as an oral history that serves as a vibrant presentation for everyday readers and scholars alike.
The stories are captured and categorized into three different areas: Through the Fire; Guarded Heart; and Always Something Left to Love. The women, whose names and locations have been changed to protect their anonymity, openly discuss their sexual history; how they learned about sex, masturbation, orgasms, and experience of first menstruation, virginity, pregnancy, and motherhood; sexual abuse, rape, sexism, sexual fantasy and sexual orientation. Some of the tales in the book are horrendous such as incest, rape, domestic abuse and sexual harassment but while knocked down these women were not knocked out. Many tell about the love from friends, family and at times even the smiles of strangers brought them back from the depths of despair. The stories are all different and engaging as their experiences were dynamic while thought provoking. Does your definition of sexuality characterize how you live life?
Longing To Tell is an extraordinary account on how African American women survive despite the incredible odds against them. As an adjunct professor of African American Studies, I highly recommend this book as a study into the mind of black women. As an avid reader, I strongly encourage you to read this book as a motivational guide on finding your way out of the struggle. African American women are the cornerstones of modern society and this book proves that!

Sexual Testimonies.......2004-06-23
Take a literary journey with Tricia Rose, author of LONGING TO TELL,
and read some revealing, heartbreaking, and inspiring narratives from
a host of women of color who talk about sexuality, race, and their
coming of age as a woman.
Tricia Rose begins by sharing with readers the purpose and reason for
this unusual project which opened up doors to allow these unknown and
unspoken women of color to tell their stories. The women outlined in
the book is of various ages, economic, and educational backgrounds. The extensive research and countless interviews propel this author's thought-provoking narratives from women breaking through a sexuality barrier that has always been unspoken of through generations of people of color.
LONGING TO TELL rises to the occasion, orchestrating a context that speaks from the voices of women on their sexual relationships, and intimate clichés that thrust many into a naive state of ignorance and misinterpreting the art of intimacy.
The women's names were changed along with other details to protect
their identity due to some very graphic details in which they
outlined their exposure to sexuality. It was a hard lesson for many
and a rude awakening for others. They speak on growing up in
dysfunctional surroundings, exposure to drugs, and going from one
relationship to another. Several grew up with the pretense that if
you had sex it meant love.
They explain how their families and children had to endure their
unorthodox and self-destructive behaviors that sometimes lead to
tragic consequences. One woman speaks of how her young son was
beaten to death by her boyfriend, and never realized the warning signs
because she stayed in a haze of drugs. They speak candidly about their first sexual encounters with men and women. They speak on where they were and where they are today. They explain their process of healing along the path to finally taking control of their lives.
All the women's narratives speak volumes on the depth and courage that made them survivors. In the end, the author sums up very eloquently the overall dynamics of the sexual ramifications that women of color encounter today.
LONGING TO TELL by Tricia Rose is a well written book. Tears came to my eyes several times reading some of the stories, and I wanted to jump into the book and hug and congratulate each woman on revealing their personal journey. I applaud Ms. Rose for her insight and courage to develop, research, and talk with so many women who are sisters, mothers, aunts, wives, and friends offering them an outlet in which to speak. A must read for everyone because knowledge is the key to understanding and awareness. (...)
I Highly Recommend this book.......2004-06-04
Longing to Tell consists of 20 Black women telling their stories about sex
and intimacy. The women range from 19 to 48 and all have powerful stories
to tell about their experiences.
All women discussed what it meant to be intimate or have intimacy with a
person. Intimacy was broadly defined and included more than just a sexual
relationship and included relationships with family and friends. Most
women defined intimacy in similar terms: a reciprocal relationship with
someone where you can let down your guard and express yourself without out
fear of being judged or criticized.
Other themes that arose in the course of the book were Black women's
relationships with Black men. Some of the women had horrific experiences
attempting to love and sustain a relationship with Black men, and while
some woman had sworn off of Black men and were dating outside the race or
were lesbians, most women were committed to finding love with a Black man.
The negative stereotypes of Black women in the media and particularly those
perpetuated by Black artists were discussed. Sexism within the Black
community was also explored including the stress experienced by Black women
of having to navigate racism and sexism on the outside and then having to
come home to a situation where a woman's contribution and independence are
not valued and where a woman was sometimes viewed as little more than
property.
The most disturbing subject in the book was sexual violence against women.
Many (if not most) of the women interviewed told stories of incest,
molestation, rape, sexual harassment or sexual degradation. The book
forcefully brought home the point of how vulnerable Black girls and women
are to sexual abuse and also helped me see that sexual abuse against Black
women unfortunately really is not all that surprising when one considers
that Black women have been and continue to be the objects of sexual
degradation in the media and little more than property in relationships.
Until Black women are valued for the contributions they bring to the
society as whole and to relationships in particular, it will continue to be
"OK" to continue the sexual violence against our girls and women.
Despite all the negativity directed at Black women, the book highlighted
the fact that Black women are an exceptional group who live in a world
where racism and sexism (within and without the Black community) affect our
daily lives. Nonetheless, we are the keepers of the family and the
maintainers of our men. The abuse we are subject to is unparalleled, but
we still strive. The book captured this uniqueness of Black women and a
way that I have never seen expressed before.
I would highly recommend this book to all Black women as it represents a
celebration of all that we are. Additionally, in reading this book I was
also struck by how much Black men could benefit from the stories, and I
also highly and enthusiastically recommend this book to Black men.

Product Description
We Call Our Daddy "Mister" chronicles the story of Burrell Harrell, the son of a Confederate soldier. Harrell refused to abide by the customs and traditions of the Stars and Bars. He took up with a mulatto woman who bore him nine white children, five boys and four girls. They lived as a family in Georgia, contrary to custom and law. Harrell took on all comers to safeguard his children. His children were not accepted as white; they lived a difficult life being neither white nor black, but were conditioned culturally as black.
"Mister Burrell" loved his family but toward the end of his life, he willed all of his belongings to a nephew - the son of a profligate brother - leaving his family without land or legal means to prosper. The holdings of Mister Burrell were about 2000 acres, 500 hundred head of cattle, and a whole creek.
Probate of the will disclosed the probability of second, more recent will, allowing his heirs and Harrell's children to challenge the first will. Though the challenges were successfully fought off by the nephew, he lived in fear of having to give up land.
Two of Burrell's daughters, 86 and 78 years old in 2006, still live on land previously owned by their Daddy. These very lands were recently bought by the State of Georgia and leased to the KIA Corporation of Korea to manufacture automobiles. The state paid Burrell Harrell $145.00 an acre in 1965; today the same land is valued at $12,500 per acre. They hope to be compensated eventually.
Customer Reviews:
A great look into a life few of us experience.......2007-05-02
This is a curiously interesting recitation of a family's life in the rural south. Not just any family but the family of a white landowner and his common law mulatto wife. The story of their life together and apart as well as their children and the eventual conflicts with which they dealt.
This book is wonderfully full of idioms of the place and times. The story enlightens and the author's method of telling the story is captivating. Not too much recitation of fact and not too much story telling....a good mix that draws the reader into the lives of some amazingly interesting people and family dealings in which most of us have little knowledge.
I very much enjoyed and benefitted from reading this book.
Family created against the norm and in defiance.............2007-01-22
This book proves to be quite an interesting true story of one very mavrick white man who during the first decade of the 20th century, in the deep southern area where Georgia and Alabama meet, decided to make a mulatto woman his common-in-law wife and have nine children with her. Burrell F. Harrell broke the conventions and family traditions as well as taboos of interracial relationship by his decision. Due to the official unmarriage status and due to racial relationship of the time, Harrell was usually address as "Mister Burrell" by his entire mulatto family.
The book reflects on this family and its unusual conditions since this was the period and the region of the country where white people rarely mixed with black people. The fact that a white man would openly embraced a black woman and the children he had with her created an novel story by itself. The book also goes into the lives of the children as they grew up into adulthood, many appears to be conflicted by the fact that they looked white although think of themselves as black.
However, like all such story, things don't exactly end well. Despite of the obvious love that Harrell may have for his family and it appears that he did care for them, it wasn't enough to secure their financial and property well being. It could be that Harrell was still stuck behind the curve ball on several issues and he left most of his belongings to his white nephew who successfully held his own against his half white/half black cousins who tried to challenge their father's will.
If there was a certain downside to this book, I would say that the photographs could have been better. For the life of me, I don't see how any of the these children could ever be mistaken for a white based on these photos. They definitely looked black to me despite of their blondish curls. Maybe the photographs were contrasted too darkly.
But overall, I thought the book was well written and its captured the family dymanics of this strange relationship that a white father had with his mulatto family.

Pretty Good; Tell's the Story of Jesus' Life.......2007-06-08
This 93-page coloring book has at least a few sentences of storytelling below each page telling step by step the story of Jesus' life from Bethlehem to the cross, resurrection, and ascension.
The drawings are pretty simple and appropriate for coloring by kids of all ages who would enjoy coloring. The stories are told in simplistic language and attempting to keep the message of the story simply. At times I found myself wondering why various stories were skipped or why various details were left out. But I think that in general this was done with good discernment.
My primary complaint is that there is very little from the end of Jesus' life. The Lord's Supper is skipped. The one page from Gethsemane is somewhat disappointing. There is nothing about the arrest or trial and only one picture of the cross. And post-cross there is one picture from the tomb and one from the ascension. This is very disproportionate with the detail given to Jesus' earlier life. It almost seems like the author had a 100 page limit and found himself rushing at the end to make sure that it all fit. I hope that if this is ever revised, more detail is given to this portion of Jesus' life, especially considering the importance of the cross and resurrection to Jesus' life.
Nevertheless, if you are looking for a good coloring book to walk your children through the story of Jesus' life get this, recognizing that you will have to do your own teaching on a lot when it comes to the end of Jesus' life.
