This book is required for a course I'm taking, so I HAD to buy it. But--it's very logically and concisely written, but also easy for the layperson (I am not a researcher). I'd recommend it as a how-to or resource book for any level of research study.

Playing golf isn't hard; it's playing it well when you're not on your game that's difficult, and few have ever mastered that skill better than former Masters, U.S. Open, and PGA champion Raymond Floyd. One of the fiercest competitors on the fairways, he's as tough with his mind as he is with his clubs; Elements is his primer on how to think like a golfer. More so than any swing tip or technical adjustment, his advice on how to live with bad shots has the potential to lower scores dramatically. Floyd sets up various adverse situations and suggests ways to play through them, but his most important bits of wisdom are more generic than specific: learn what mistakes you can afford to make, and always have a dependable "safety shot" at your disposal when all else seems lost. Golf is less a game of perfection than one of survival and recovery. Floyd's Elements, then, is a comprehensive guide to posting scores you can be proud of on those rough days. --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

Say Good-Bye to Doubles and Triples Forever

Every aspect of golf, from the swing to the follow-through, is a means to one deceptively simple end: to get the ball into the hole in the fewest strokes possible. The Elements of Scoring explains how paying attention to the way you play -- regardless of your level of skill -- will guarantee you fewer strokes, a better overall game, and at the end of the day, more fun.

With a practical and encouraging touch, Raymond Floyd shares his vision of what makes a scorer and shows how you can become this most dangerous of opponents.

Golf is a game of mistakes: The secret to better golf lies in making fewer of them and making sure the ones you do make don?t prove too costly. With Raymond Floyd as your teacher, you are sure to shoot the lowest scores you can, day in and day out, playing the game like a true scorer.

5 out of 5 stars Good players who need to learn the art of scoring - sign up here........2007-08-31

Not much swing instruction going on here. This book is primarily for the player who can hit good shots and has above average skill but is still putting up disappointing numbers. It's not really earth shattering stuff. You know that by trying for eagles on par 5 you end up brining bogey and worse into play. You know that when you are in trouble the correct play is to just get back to the fairway. If you are like me you just need someone like Raymond Floyd to tell you these things before you listen! He will tell you these things and plenty more in this great book. It's not watered down a bunch of boring anecdotes - just the goods from a guy who knows how to go low.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone wanting to improve.......2006-09-15

As posted previously, this book isn't about swing mechanics, but about playing smarter golf and being realistic about your game. I think this book would be extremely beneficial to the beginning golfer and would make a great gift. It's a quick read and well written. I try to read it a couple of times a year to remind myself to play within my abilities and keep a good attitude.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Scoring and Playing with Confidence.......2006-08-21

I am a low handicap golfer who grinds to shoot in the low 70's. Typically, I hit 7-8 greens in regulation. After reading Floyd's book, I played a round and hit 14 greens in regulation. The next round I played in a vicious wind and shot 77. Better than scoring low, these were the two most comfortable rounds I've ever played.

Mr. Floyd's advice is about scoring. There is little about swing mechanics. I will read the first five chapters over and over. After reading these chapters, my mind is calm and clear. If I take this mindset to the course, I am fully confident that I will play my best golf that day.

I own over 40 books on golf. This book is at the top of my list. If I had this book when I was learning the game, I feel I would have saved years in lowering my score. Follow Mr. Floyd's advice and lower your score.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful .......2006-03-13

Floyd is still one of the best chippers and shot gamers in golf. The PGA pros when interviewed say the same thing. He has a lot to share and much of it is "tough love" to us amateurs--don't over-club, be realistic with your average distance not your best distance etc. He is a very clever golf course manager and it shows in his advice. His description of his early days when he was a risk-taker and losing, while trying to be like Arnie, was very interesting. Once he decided to manage his risks around the course and be himself he became a big winner. This would certainly not be the first book for a beginner (you first need to learn to swing) but this should be a fairly early addition if you want to score well.

2 out of 5 stars improve your score.......2006-02-21

The book seems to be geared more to the single digit handicapper rather than a high handicapper. I find the book dated and the author to be patting himself on the back too often.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Glen ShotSaving Tips From This.......2001-05-26

My favorite golfer here shares some of his game thoughts.

Being one of the best at tempo and scrambling, you'll find some great advice here.

I especially have put his idea of swinging down the line on pitch shots where the ball is snug down in the longstuff.

5 out of 5 stars Readers Will Glean Shot Saving Tips.......2001-05-26

My favorite golfer here reveals some of his thinking about the game.

Renowned for his tempo, short game and scrambling ability, you'll take away much in these areas.

From reading this, I too now play gloveless. It saves money, I feel the clubhead much better and have much better grip pressure from making this change.

Another tip that has saved many shots in my rounds, is that when the ball is down snug in the grass, play pitch shots down the line.

Freddie has many like these in here you'll find so useful as well. Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars A great golf reference for learning to play "trouble" shots........1999-06-27

Since I purchased Total Shotmaking the book has been my constant source of reference and review whenever my game drops a notch. The best part of this book, for me, is the section titled "Couples' Clinic." This section includes 60 excellent tips on shot making. Its almost as if Fred Couples becomes your personal instructor to help you correct bad shots or develop new shots to enhance your game.

Total Shotmaking has helped me lower my handicap because it has expanded my bag of shots to help me recover from difficult spots.

Sports Illustrated's Rick Reilly once compared Fred Couples's appeal to chocolate's: "Nearly everybody likes him, and most people like him a lot." One of the game's true talents, Couples is also one of its real enigmas; what you see--the languid swing, the untroubled walk, the easy attitude--seems to be what you get, and what you seem to get is pretty appealing. But that's only part of the story. He's not nearly as carefree and lackadaisical as he'd have us believe. Crushed by his meltdown in the 1989 Ryder Cup when he lost the final match for the U.S. and the cup went back to Europe, much of his great run of the early '90s--including the 1992 Masters title--grew out of the resolve, rededication, and refocusing Ray Floyd helped him draw out of that experience. Similarly, much of his falloff in the late '90s can be traced to family illnesses and the emotional toll they took.

A dogged researcher and interviewer, Bissell does her share of mucking around in the rough to find the complex competitor--and ultimately the decent human being--at Couples's core. Her exploration of his relationship with his parents at the end of their lives is quite moving, and the breakup of his first marriage makes for pleasurably guilty reading. Interestingly, it's Couples's polo-obsessed first wife who offers the most stunning insight into his essence: "To Fred, nothing is worth the sacrifice of losing your peace of mind." --Jeff Silverman

Book Description

From the Foreword by Paul Marchand: "Finally! A book to help illuminate the Fred fascination. On the following pages you can enjoy some insight into all those qualities that make Fred Couples such a compelling sports star. His humor and humility have been his ever-present personality traits, and there has always been a real sincerity in Fred's uncomplicated and unaffected nature. While looking so calm and relaxed, Fred performs his skills 'right out of his soul.'" With his fluid swing and soft touch, Fred Couples has won thirteen times on the PGA Tour, including the Masters in 1992. And Freddie is clearly a favorite among the fans and players. His appeal lies not in the number of tournaments he has won but in his endearing nonchalance about his star golfer status. Fred Couples: Golf's Reluctant Superstar is an illuminating look inside the life of a man who rarely bares his soul. Author Kathlene Bissell recounts stories of his days at the University of Houston with future CBS golf announcer Jim Nantz, of his turning pro on a whim and the ensuing struggle to break through on the tour, of his fulfilling a lifelong dream of a Masters victory and the emotional aftermath, and of his role in helping launch the current look in golf clothing. He hides behind a casual demeanor, but his career has revealed a raw determination to make it through the down times to remain at the top of his field. Fred Couples is an inspiring story for golfers and sports fans alike. Kathlene Bissell has worked in the golf industry since 1984. She has written for Golf Illustrated, Golf for Women, and Private Clubs magazines and formerly was media director for the Skins Game and the World Cup of Golf. She is a media consultant to golf businesses and founder of thegolfshow.net, a website devoted to various aspects of the game. She lives in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book........2007-08-23

I'm not a golfer, but I was interested in Fred's life story, and that part was interesting, but the pages and pages of each shot of a tournament was boring to a non-golfer. I got what I wanted, the human side.

4 out of 5 stars Missed Birdie of a Book!.......2000-12-01

This book was similar to any par four played: average drive down the middle, with an average approach shot thirty feet from the pin. The birdie putt slid by two inches on the left. Putted in for par. An adamant Couples fan, I probably had higher expectations about a really good read about my favorite player. Learned alot about him, but style left me weary. Shot after shot description of each tournament left me tired. Not bad though overall. Anything on Freddie is appreciated!

5 out of 5 stars The recultant superstar.......2000-06-08

I have always been a big fan of Freddy, this book explained his issues in a more concise way than I had previously thought they occurred. I highly recommend this book, whether your a fan of Fred or not, it provides an insight into the rigors of a golf professional.

2 out of 5 stars Fred Couples.......2000-04-05

The book was ok. If you're a Couples fan you probably know most of what you're going to read already. In some regards the author made Deborah out to be a little more "cartoonish' than she probably was. Would've like a little more depth rather than just remembrances of golf tournaments past.

1 out of 5 stars Golf's Reluctant Superstar.......2000-04-03

I thought this was an awful book. The author cobbled together press clippings and an infatuation. I bet Fred Couples was sorry he ever talked to her.

      Book Description

Help your clients' relationships survive infidelity!

In the Handbook of the Clinical Treatment of Infidelity, a panel of seasoned experts reflects on issues central to affairs, and on how to help couples heal and learn from them. First, editors Fred P. Piercy, Katherine M. Hertlein, and Joseph L. Wetchler provide an essential overview of infidelity theory, research, and treatment. They discuss the effect of infidelity on couples and delineate three types of infidelity—emotional, physical, and infidelity including aspects of both. They review the relatively new role of the Internet in infidelity and explore infidelity within the context of comarital relationships. Finally, they discuss the overarching theories and common models used in infidelity treatment.

Also in the Handbook of the Clinical Treatment of Infidelity:

Susan M. Johnson, the co-developer of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), discusses affairs through the lens of attachment theory, and shows how EFT provides a way to acknowledge and express pain, remorse, and regret, and to repair this attachment bond.

David Moultrup takes a Bowenian approach to infidelity, focusing attention on the underlying dynamics of the emotional system

Frank Pittman and Tina Pittman Wagers outline cultural myths about affairs and do their share of debunking

Adrian Blow discusses how to help couples directly address their pain—and the challenges of the healing process

Brian Case highlights the role of apology and forgiveness in the healing process

Frank Stalfa and Catherine Hastings focus on the treatment of "accusatory suffering"—a spouse's obsessive holding onto and retaliating for an affair long after it has ended, and despite the offending partner's repeated apologies and attempts at restitution

Don-David Lusterman discusses individuals who have suppressed or denied traumatic stress reactions to their partner's affair, and how to help them

Scott Johnson discusses myths about affairs, from who is cheating on whom, to whether men really have more affairs than women, to the blame-filled language of "affairs," "betrayal," and "infidelity," asking us to think more systematically about affairs and to see the dynamics of extra dyadic relationships as more complex and nuanced than they are typically portrayed in the literature

Joan Atwood provides an overview of Internet infidelity—the factors influencing one's involvement in this type of infidelity, and some considerations for therapists

Tim Nelson, Fred Piercy, and Doug Sprenkle report on the results of a multi-phase Delphi study that explored what infidelity experts say are the critical issues, interventions, and gender differences in the treatment of Internet infidelity

Monica Whitty and Adrian Carr draw upon Klein's object relations theory and discuss how this might influence the way people rationalize their Internet infidelity

Emily Brown outlines the concept of the Split Self Affair—discussing its origins, characteristics, and implications for individuals and couples, and providing detailed information on how to work with these couples in therapy

Michael Bettinger presents extra dyadic relationship as a fact, rather than a problem, within many gay male relationships—a discussion that shows how gay male polyamory can work as an alternative to the heterosexual model of emotional and sexual exclusivity in romantic dyadic relationships

Katherine Hertlein and Gary Skaggs report on the results of a study that assessed the level of differentiation and one's engagement in extra dyadic relationships The Handbook of the Clinical Treatment of Infidelity is essential reading for today's (and tomorrow's) clinicians who work with couples. Book Description

Cancer will strike one in four Americans. Whether it reaches us as individuals or afflicts a loved one or friend, this book provides a valuable source of information and inspiration.

Through their personal reflections, you'll experience the impact cancer brought to the Warders, their friends and family. Fred Warder (1932-1972) describes in medical detail the ravages of cancer as it systematically destroys his body. Anne, as wife, mother and caregiver, tells of the trials she and her loved ones face along the way; then, some thirty years later, she is able to reflect on the reality that "nothing, not even death, can end this love."

In the Preface to "Love Never Dies," the Rev. Patrick Thyne writes: "At the center of this story are two people who love and trust each other, and whose love and trust are tested, stretched, and ultimately deepened by their ordeal. Fred's wit and courage are evident even through a series of disfiguring facial surgeries and what he recognized might be a slow, painful descent toward death. Anne organizes his world and their children's, runs interference with medical bureaucracies and awkward friends, and finally lets herself touch even the disfiguring wounds of this man she knows she is losing. What's remarkable to discover again, page by page, is the candor and detail with which each of them writes; about horrible and silly moments; about the next disappointment and another rush of hope; about doctors who work tirelessly and friends who don't call, don't want to see or hear the truth that Fred and Anne are living with. It's all here."

When Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, groundbreaking author of "On Death and Dying," read the original manuscript in 1972, she urged its publication as a book.

          Book Description

          SENIORS DO IT SLOWER

When you step into your golden years, you will find more joy in sex than you could have ever imagined. The foreplay and the fondling are sustained for a long time. Although you will be able to reach only one climax in so-many hours, the feeling that you will experience can be described only as out of this world. You will have to live it to know exactly what Bella and Fred are talking about.

In this book, Bella and Fred narrate the intimate details of over two dozen lovemaking sessions in a play-by-play manner from the time they get together through the extensive fondling and foreplay and finally the incredible climaxes that they bring to each other.
