Book Description
Once it was a swamp. Now Foggy Bottom is swimming with real-estate sharks. When a man is found stabbed to death in this trendy D.C. neighborhood, it is major news. But within forty-eight hours the nation is gripped by a fear that leaves this comparatively small crime in the dark.
Three passenger planes are shot out of the sky. Everywhere–in law enforcement, in the media, and in the most secret realms of government–men and women scramble to find out who shot hand-held missiles at the planes, and why. It is a search that reaches from Moscow to the Pacific Northwest, putting some people’s lives in jeopardy and turning others lives inside out. But no one can guess the truth: that the epicenter of the terrorist outbreak is Washington D.C. . . . and a dead man behind a park bench in a place called Foggy Bottom.

After 9/11.......2007-01-23
Murder in the park across from the Lombard Hotel seems to be a case of a Canadian victim. Joe Potamos is a reporter for the WASHINGTON POST and Peter Langruth is a police officer. Max Pauling, divorced father, pilot of a small aircraft, CIA, has been relegated to filling a desk job unhappily. A small commercial airliner traveling from Westchester County, NY to Washington DC crashes. Pauling's boss wants him at work right away. Another commuter flight crashes near Boise. A third accident happens in San Jose.
The murdered man is identified as Jeremy Wilcox. He is attached to the Canadian Embassy, a trade specialist. In New York and California witnesses come forward, having seen missiles down the planes. CNN gets the nuews about the missile sightings. Max Pauling is ordered to go to Moscow.
In the past Potamus covered the State Department. He was demoted to general assignment reporter after punching a columnist. Diplomatic niceties are no longer part of his world. Languth, the police officer, and Potamus both mistrust people. Pauling, in Russia, tries to buy information. It seems the missiles came through a group in Plattsburgh via Canada. Max is sent to Langley, the Puzzle Palace, when he delivers unwelcome news.
As events unspool, the reader is carried along to the exciting end.
as always she remains the best mystery writer........2002-11-21
another great book by Margaret Truman. The beginning was a bang and the ending a climax.
Terrorists and Mass Murder of Airline Passengers.......2002-10-30
Margaret Truman's mysteries are always fun to read. They are low-key, have a minimum of gory details, and have twists to keep things interesting. This time, we have the murder of a Canadian diplomat and destruction of three commuter planes in flight, killing passengers and crew. We watch the investigation of the crimes through the eyes of a Washington Post reporter, a CIA operative, and several FBI agents. Simultaneous destruction of three planes points to terrorists, but which terrorists? When the CIA man and the reporter find the answer, the story shifts into high gear during the last 100 pages for a breathtaking ending. All in all, it's an enjoyable book for relaxation.
Interesting forewarning.......2002-04-27
In the aftermath of the September 11th tragedy, it is eerie that the same number of planes suffers similar disasters. This book is a little below par of her other books. The absence (in a crime-solving capacity) of Mac and Annabel Smith left a void in the story. The other characters were predictable and not well developed. In all, it was a good story that needed more work on the characters.
Typical Truman, but eerily prescient.......2002-04-26
If you like Margaret Truman's other "Murder ... " books, you'll like this one. If you don't, you won't.
The relatively predictable characters and writing are familiar here. The only twist is that this book is about terrorists shooting passenger planes out of the sky, which gives the reader an odd feeling after 9/11.
Truman's books are great if you're looking for something to take to the beach or read on a weekend. They're easily read and the plots are interesting enough to make them page-turners.
If you're looking for serious fiction, you'll be disappointed. But my recommendation is to enjoy Truman's books for what they are -- fun novels for when you're in the mood for a quick read.

"I come from a race of stortytellers," writes Sharyn McCrumb in her introduction to the first complete collection of her wonderfully rich and mordant short stories. "My father's family--the Arrowoods and the McCourys--settled in the Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina when the wilderness was still Indian country." Like McCrumb's fine novels (She Walks These Hills and a dozen others), these 24 stories link the mysteries of the past with life in present-day Appalachia, using chains of words stronger than any steel.
Book Description
"In an earlier life, McCrumb must have been a balladeer, singing of restless spirits, star-crossed lovers, and the consoling beauty of nature. . . . The overall effect is spellbinding."
--The Washington Post
Bestselling author Sharyn McCrumb is "a born storyteller" (Mary Higgins Clark) who astonishes readers and reviewers with the power and scope of her talent, prompting the San Diego Union-Tribune to declare: "There is no one quite like her among present-day writers. No one better, either."
Foggy Mountain Breakdown, the first-ever collection of Sharyn McCrumb's short fiction, is a literary quilting of old and new, humorous and heartfelt, offering award-winning works--and two stories never before published, contrasting mountain childhoods past and present.
Chilling tales of suspense alternate with evocative character portraits and compelling narratives that embrace the southern Appalachian locales and themes of McCrumb's acclaimed Ballad Novels. Within this cornucopia of two dozen stories, Old Rattler, a mountain healer, skirmishes with a serial killer . . . Princess Di investigates long-kept secrets within the House of Windsor . . . A reincarnated murder victim seeks delicious revenge . . . And while honeymooning in the bridegroom's ancestral hilltop homeplace, two newlyweds harbor second thoughts.
The author's perfect-pitch ear for dialogue and ability to illuminate the dark side of human nature merge with her brilliant artistry to make Foggy Mountain Breakdown a virtuoso collection for devotees of Sharyn McCrumb--and for the legion of new readers who will find themselves caught under her spell.

Wonderful!.......2007-01-02
A long time ago, my parents and I went to hear McCrumb give a reading at a local college and we were hooked by her storytelling. She shared quite a few of these short stories with us that night and when I re-discovered them in my parents' bookcases over Thanksgiving, I made sure I brought this one home. I love every single one of these stories. They are fun, interesting and reminds me that she is a wonderful storyteller. Sometimes, I feel as if story-telling is becoming a lost art especially since I don't like short stories. They're usually drab, unsatisfying and short. Not McCrumb's. These are wonderful.
Here are a few samples: "Telling the Bees" where a young groom takes his bride to his grandparents' home in the mountains, only to leave the next day to accomodate his very spoiled bride. You could feel her disdain for the ramshackled (but clean) cabin and her poutiness at breaking the heel of her expensive designer boot. You could feel his sadness at time passing and his disappointment that she wouldn't share in some of his fondest memories of growing up at his grandparents' place.
Then there's "Gentle Reader" where an author corresponds with a fan who absolutely loves every single one of her books. There is a twist in the story as she reveals more of her problems to this "gentle reader" and how he helped her out.
These are just two of my favorites ~~ there are stories of a funeral and different memories of the deceased from different members of the family, there are stories of murder, rage, love, passion and leaving or returning back to the homestead. These are just reflections of life everywhere, not just in the mountains. And they are wonderful short stories ~~ real and true to people. They are not drab. They are short (and there were some I wish was longer ...) but they're definitely not like modern short stories where they write to be artistic, not realistic.
McCrumb has already gotten my heart with her other stories and this one cinches the deal even more. It's a great introduction to her writings and it's definitely a keeper in any serious bookworm's library.

Not McCrumb's best by far... :(.......2002-12-31
Let me preface this review by saying that Ms. McCrumb is one of my favorite authors. I follow her Ballad novels avidly and purchase them as soon as they come out, being both interested in the folk music of Appalachia and having grown up in the area in which they are usually set, upper east Tennessee.
That said, I was overall rather disappointed in this book. The author admits in the introduction that it is comprised of "almost all the short stories" she's ever written, including stories from highschool and writing exercises, and unfortunately, it reads that way. Based on the raving praise I'd read about it, I was all set to go through with a pen and mark in the contents stories that were particularly evocative of the places and people McCrumb often portrays so brilliantly. Instead, i found myself flipping from tale to tale, wondering when i'd get to "the good stuff." Some of the plot twists are cute, and a couple of the stories set in Appalachian settings ("Old Rattler," "Precious Jewel," and "A Snare as Old as Solomon" are examplary) come close to what i expected.
As a fan of Ms. McCrumb, it's somewhat interesting on a scholarly level, since you *can* follow her development as a writer from youth to experienced in this book, and the glimpses of her initial sketchings of "canonical" characters like Sheriff Spencer Arrowood of the Ballad novels and detective-protagonist Elizabeth MacPherson of the eponymous mystery series are of interest to fans I'm sure. Otherwise, most of the stories are a bit too sappy and trite for me to recommend it to the general reader. Instead i'd encourage people to hunt down one of the Ballad novels: The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, She Walks These Hills, or The Ballad of Frankie Silver, perhaps.
Had to Write.......2001-12-01
The books in Sharyn McCrumb's Appalachian Series are among my favorites, so I couldn't resist her collection of short stories. All are extremely well written. The stories are so varied that it's hard to believe the same person wrote them all. When I got to the end, I wanted to go back to the beginning and start all over again. The book fits my criterion for Superb; that is, I wish I could have written the stories. Even if you don't ordinarily like short stories, give this book a try.
Excellent!.......1999-07-31
I know that my heading isn't exactly distinctive, but "excellent" is really the best word to describe this collection of short stories. As a dedicated reader of the Eliz McPherson series, I loved the story about her early days. I also thought "The Monster of Glamis" was intriguing, although a bit fanciful. Anyone who has read her novel Paying the Piper will recognize elements of Cameron and Elizabeth's relationship in the story about the relationship between the American and the Scot. McCrumb's stories about Appalachia are also moving and sincere.Definitely a wonderful book from a great author whose works I will continue to await anxiously.
A great introduction into the work of Ms McCrumb.......1999-06-01
Having previously only sampled 'Highland Laddie Gone' I picked up this book by chance whilst travelling in New Hampshire. Being from the UK the stories which were specifically set within the Smokey Mountians and Apalacians which McCrumb so dearly loves I imagined would have less of a pull than some of the other more 'general' stories. I could not have been more wrong. These tales had a lyrical quality and even the saddest stories held a quite beautiful mysticism. I eagerly await reading more of the Sheriff Arrowood stories.
It is hard to pick out a favourite, but if I have to make the choice I would chose 'Old Rattler' as the best of the bunch. It was one of those stories - a missing girl, distraut mother, wise old man and a sheriff prepared to take a slightly unorthadox route to the solution - which could have been crass, derivative and trodden a well worn path. Instead, I found myself wishing that the tale were longer, I wanted to know more about all involved, I was actually disappointed to reach the end. I hope the other Arrowood books have the same effect.
Unfortunately, there has to be a bad apple in the barrel - there were two actually, but one 'The Monster of Glamis' was just plain silly, the other 'A Predatory Woman' I found disturbing for quite the wrong reasons. This is a very thinly disguised story of a notorious British child murderer, as they say, only the names have changed. I live in the hills not two miles from where this vile woman and her partner did their terrible deeds and the area still bares a significant mental scar. Virtually no-one from this area, or indeed the UK itself would have any problems in identifying the protagonist of this tale. One day she could be released and the ending, whilst it may be the fervent wish of most who know of these crimes, was a cop-out and I felt trivialised one of the most dispicable and memorable acts in recent British history.
From the remainder of my review one can appreciate that I regard Sharyn McCrumb highly. I will certainly read as much of her work as is available in the UK. I truly feel that she has a gift of great storytelling with narrative that is often near perfect. It is perhaps the subject matter she should give a little more attention to.

Has this happened to you? A name that was on the tip of your tongue suddenly disappears from memory. You mean to say one word, and another pops out. You put your car keys down and have no idea where they are a minute later. You search for something and discover it's in plain sight in front of you. Your mind feels foggy. If you're approaching menopause, your brain may be reacting normally to estrogen loss, according to neuropsychologist and researcher Claire Warga in Menopause and the Mind. She immodestly names this condition WHMS: Warga's Hormonal Misconnection Syndrome. Warga gives tools for assessing, understanding, speaking about, and getting competent help for your symptoms. She presents case studies, discusses why this condition is often overlooked, explains the research on estrogen and the brain, and presents options for improving your brain power and reversing WHMS using hormone replacement therapy or nonhormonal approaches. She includes a comprehensive screening test and recommends that you take the results to your doctor. In fact, you might want to take the whole book to your doctor, because a recurring theme in this book is that medical professionals tend to miss, disregard, or misdiagnose these symptoms. --Joan Price
Book Description
Menopause and the Mind gives every woman the survival kit she needs to manage the thinking and memory symptoms -- long overlooked by the medical establishment -- that accompany the onset of perimenopause and menopause. As early as their late thirties, many women begin to experience a range of startling changes in the way they speak, remember, drink, and navigate. Sometimes, these changes begin with occasional "slips of the tongue." Other times, a former champion speller realizes that she's isn't so sure how to spell "potato" or "forty," or an organization maven loses track of her appointments. Some women find they can't remember the name of their oldest friend, or how to turn on the computer. Others put the shampoo bottle in the refrigerator instead of the shower caddy, or forget where they are going en route to the supermarket they've shopped at for years. These symptoms occur with greater frequency as women enter their forties, fifties, and beyond, but often they are chalked up to stress or age. However, repeated lapses in memory and recurrences of foggy thinking can be terrifying, causing some women to wonder, "What's happening to me? Could this be early Alzheimer's Disease?"
Neuropsychologist Claire Warga provides the first scientific explanation for this common "hormonal misconnection" syndrome. Drawing upon recent brain and clinical research, she shows that forgetfulness, malapropisms, and lost concentration are not manifestations of dementia or senility; instead, they result from the depletion of estrogen in the brain cells of women as they enter perimenopause and menopause. Armed with this knowledge, Warga offers women a breakthrough plan for regaining control and confidence in their minds.
Warga explains in clear, simple language the cutting-edge science that underlies the "hormonal misconnection" syndrome. Research shows that a decrease in estrogen -- which begins with the onset of perimenopause at about age 35 -- produces detectable changes in the parts of the brain having to do with memory and attention, and can affect multiple neurotransmitter systems. There is also evidence that estrogen loss impacts verbal memory and learning. Yet remarkably, the medical establishment has failed tot use this research to help the millions of perimenopausal and menopausal women who suffer from speech, memory, attention, or cognitive/behavioral symptoms. Most doctors know a good deal about the physical and emotional symptoms of menopause, but little about how it affects the brain. Claire Warga fills this vacuum and provides every woman with the information she needs to take care of herself on her own and in consultation with her doctor.
Menopause and the Mind includes a wide range of real-life stories -- such as the menopausal woman who was misdiagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic -- that illustrate how different women have coped with their "hormonal misconnection" symptoms. Warga explains the full range of thinking, speech, short- and long-term memory, behavior, spatial, and time sense symptoms in extensive detail, complete with an array of examples. Most important are a self-screening test and symptom chart that every woman can use to understand the extent of her symptoms and accurately assess her condition, with or without her ob/gyn. Women can also make practical use of Warga's detailed guide to treatment options, which include estrogen therapy, dietary and behavioral changes, and techniques for improving memory.
Women today live longer and are more active than ever before. Menopause and the Mind ensures that every woman can live without embarrassment or fear that she is "losing it" as she grows older. With Claire Warga's roadmap of the relationship between estrogen and the brain, women can develop the practical coping tools they need to lead happy and productive lives.
Customer Reviews:
a must read.......2003-06-22
This book was excellent in helping me understand what was happening to me. It did not do a very good job of covering treatment options. I read Menopause for Dummies which didn't cover my symptoms as well as this book did, but did an excellent job of covering the treatment options.
Poorly Written.......2001-08-21
Dr. Warga may or may not have something to say about menopause and the mind, but for the life of me, I can't decipher her writing. I am amazed that Simon and Schuster let this book see the light of day without more editing. I've never read so many long, tortured, and confusing sentences. Good writing does matter.
Book should be retitled.......2001-06-28
to "Estrogen and the Mind". Claire Warga does an excellent job of compiling the data and cases describing the very real symptoms experienced at this time of life for many women (not all women). Unfortunately, she immediately defaulted to estrogen as the SOLE cure - natural or synthetic. What about the other hormones that decline at this time of life? Why has there not been research on the effects of progesterone and the mind? Research is primarily funded by pharmecutical companies and they hold no patents on progesterone - surprise. We get only half the story with this book. Now most current research has debunked that estrogen is the cure for Alzheimers.
LIVING AGAIN!!!.......2001-04-08
I am 50 yrs. old, and am a 5 yr Breast Cancer survivor. I had a mastectomy and 6 mos.of chemotherapy. My breast cancer was "estrogen"related, but it was also non-invasive, caught very early. With the help of God, I have overcome all obstacles.I also chose reconstructive surgery.Having had chemotherapy,I became menopausal. My quality of life changed drastically,I felt like I was just existing. I enjoyed nothing, nor wanted to be sociable anymore. I felt like I had no emotions.I became very insecure, irritable and negative. I KNEW something was wrong, but I was determined not to accept it as"just getting old".After all my LIFE was just beginning again. I started seeing a Psychiatrist, and went to the library and read Dr.Claire Wargasbook, Menopause and the Mind. All the emotions I had been feeling were in her book! I RAN to my oncologist & gynocoligist.Aftersome blood work, I was recommended by BOTH to get on the estrogen. My whole life has changed in a matter of days,I elected the Estradial patch with progesterone.Within days (2) I felt alert, active and Alive again. I am starting to feel feminine, and wanting to be around people. Suffice to say, at the second session with the Psychiatrist, she told me I did not need to return, my whole outlook had changed! I cannot express the change of positive emotions I have experienced. Instead of existing I am living. Because I am "high risk"so they say, I will continue to be monitered carefully, This has been my decision after researching data on estrogen and the mind, as opposed to estrogen and breastcancer. PLEASE READ DR. CLAIRE WARGA'S BOOK about Menopause and the Mind, IT CHANGED MY LIFE!!!
Non-Hormonal Alternatives.......2001-03-21
This wonderful, sanity-saving book DOES offer a lot of non-hormonal alternatives for dealing with perimenopausal mental fogginess. The fogginess can be very frightening, and because I had breast cancer I'm not a candidate for HRT - I can't even use soy products. I thought I was doomed to several years of confusion, memory & vocabulary loss. Dr. Warga's book not only explains the medical reasons behind all of the symptoms, but also shares coping strategies other women have developed to deal with these symptoms. The fact that the symptoms go away was the best news of all. GET THIS BOOK! It's reassuring and informative.

A perfect story for families to read aloud together.......2005-06-25
The year is 1868, but in the back woods of Tennessee, the Civil War is still brewing. Twelve-year-old Gnat Stokes, whose mother abandoned her at birth and whose "no-good pappy" is a "thieving Rebel," lives with her grandfather in Mary's Cove. Gnat has a reputation as a troublemaker, but secretly she just wants to learn about the world --- she loves reading, and desperately wants to go to school.
Mary's Cove is surrounded by misty, creepy swamplands, presided over by the evil Foggy Bottom Swamp Queen, Zelda, and her army of bogie monsters known as Swamp Knights. Seven years earlier, Zelda, who often takes the form of a panther, kidnapped the handsome youth Goodlow Pryce. Since then, Goodlow's sweetheart, Penelope Drinkwater, has pined over her lost love.
Gnat wants to like Penelope, but when a talking cat (soon named Eatmore Beans) delivers an enchanted locket with a cryptic message from Goodlow, Gnat intercepts it and finds herself head over heels in love with Goodlow. Soon Gnat and her three friends are on a quest to rescue Goodlow so that Gnat can become a town hero and find true love.
GNAT STOKES AND THE FOGGY BOTTOM SWAMP QUEEN is written from Gnat's perspective, in a folksy, down-home tone that lends ambience to this Appalachian tale. Inspired by the old Scottish ballad "Tam Lin," GNAT STOKES draws on many folk traditions, but also includes more modern touches such as Gnat's infatuation with LITTLE WOMEN and a running joke about the adverse effects of eating too many beans.
With its Southern tone, dramatic and humorous scenes, and unforgettable heroine, GNAT STOKES AND THE FOGGY BOTTOM SWAMP QUEEN feels like an old-fashioned yarn people used to tell around the camp fire, making it an ideal story for families to read aloud together.

Gnat Stokes Is A Keeper!.......2005-05-31
Gnat Stokes And The Foggy Bottom Swamp Queen is a keeper-- touching, funny, and full of faith in the healing power of love. Sally Keehn has given us a memorable fantasy adventure told in vivid language rich with the tone of the Smoky Mountains and delivered in a fresh, authentic voice. I loved every word and the spaces in between.
The characters, even minor ones, are colorful and well-drawn. Granny Hart, collector of stories, catcher of babies, with second sight, who delivers sermons with every bath, and explains the different kinds of love with the metaphor of a many-sided love-crystal. Grandpa, with his steadfast presence, his wisdom about the importance of properly naming people and animals, and his three Idas. The newly arrived teacher, Miss Hope, with her gold tooth, her love of books, and three magic Latin words, "Amor Vincit Omnia," to be spoken as talisman when facing danger--"Love Conquers All." Eatmore Beans, a talking cat with a Scottish accent who delivers to Gnat a gold locket containing an urgent message, and then befriends wordless Baby Earl. And Gnat herself--a bona fide original, self-described as "twelve and running amok," motherless, a plucky mountain gal hungry for books and learning, an open-hearted scallywag determined to redeem herself and be a hero.
Further enhancing the enjoyment, the settings of Mary's Cove and Foggy Bottom Swamp are vividly imagined and artfully described. And the names of people and places delight: Goodlow Price, Jib Darnell, Hallelujah Pond, Devil's Notch, and my favorite, "The Francis Spittle Home For Wayward Girls." Also, the naming rituals described add an interesting layer of meaning to a story already rich with thoughtful symbols and messages.
I've enjoyed all of Sally Keehn's books, but this one has stolen my heart....

Book Description
I wrote The Bears of Foggy Dew so there would be a children's book showing a bear's nature. One that shows how a bear lives and the kinds of things they do and find during seasonal ranging.
This book also outlines a specific area, from Gold Creek in the Okanogan National Forest to Skykomish, Washington, including the Sawtooth and Wenatchee National Forests and Empire Builder Rail Line between Wenatchee and Skykomish.
Only within the past 25 years, have studies been done specifically on bears. Before the 1970's, there was very little scientifically known about bears. This book reflects some of what has been learned about bears, since that time.
