Book Description

This is not another one–size fits all program with strict rules and baffling instructions. One of the leading voices for holistic living, Mariel Hemingway's Healthy Living from the Inside Out is an accessible, down–to–earth guide that shows us what our bodies and minds truly need and how to make the best decisions for our daily lives. Dividing the program into four foundational areas, we can isolate the issues we all face and start making the necessary changes.

Food: What we eat and drink affects every part of our lives, from our energy level to our body shape. First by distinguishing what foods make us feel and act our best, we can then learn how to integrate a flavorful yet super nutritious diet into of our regular life.

Exercise: Exercise not just to stay in shape but to stay connected to ourselves. By putting the emphasis on quality not quantity, we learn to nurture ourselves, stay grounded, and transform our mental, emotional, and physical state a little bit each day.

Home: Too often where we live echoes the clutter and chaos of the outside world. Learn how to make our homes a place where we can rest, recharge, and refocus, a haven for the balanced life we (and our families) seek.

Silence: In our super noisy world, bringing quiet reflection into our lives slows down the rush, helps us learn the empowering skill of observation, and ultimately can guide us into healthier habits and behaviors.

5 out of 5 stars Useful Guide to Healthy Living.......2007-09-16

I enjoyed this book so much, I bought it for my friends as gifts and they've all really loved it. Being in my early forties with children, it is nice to have a book that helps you slow down and live a more peaceful and healthy lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-25

This book is a wonderful book to read, talks about the women body and living healthy. I own RC Duct Cleaning an Air Duct Cleaning Company and I am always concerned with my health as well as that of people around me so I would definately recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy Living: Stop and Tune In to YOU.......2007-06-09

I recently had Mariel on my LifeBites Radio show. This book is a great reminder that all of us need to slow down and look inside. I think she does a great job of breaking it down into four areas - Eating, Exercise, Being Quiet and Home Environment. All of these areas affect how you live your life. I also appreciated her ability to be candid about her struggles in life. She doesn't claim to have all the answers, but inspires you to look inside.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-05-28

I purchased this item and sent 2 as gifts after seeing Mariel on television talking about the book. It was not what I thought, filled with buddha images. Being a Christian it was sent to Christians with no knowledge these were in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Healthy Tips.......2007-05-18

I picked up this book because I read a number of good reviews here and was intrigued. There are some good tips here undeniably but I was bored reading this book. Many of these things I've heard or read before. One of the bigger turn offs for me was her "candor" about her obsessiveness whether with food or exercise. I'm sorry I couldn't really get into this book.

Book Description

An unprecedented account of life in Baghdad’s Green Zone, a walled-off enclave of towering plants, posh villas, and sparkling swimming pools that was the headquarters for the American occupation of Iraq.

The Washington Post’s former Baghdad bureau chief Rajiv Chandrasekaran takes us with him into the Zone: into a bubble, cut off from wartime realities, where the task of reconstructing a devastated nation competed with the distractions of a Little America—a half-dozen bars stocked with cold beer, a disco where women showed up in hot pants, a movie theater that screened shoot-’em-up films, an all-you-could-eat buffet piled high with pork, a shopping mall that sold pornographic movies, a parking lot filled with shiny new SUVs, and a snappy dry-cleaning service—much of it run by Halliburton. Most Iraqis were barred from entering the Emerald City for fear they would blow it up.

Drawing on hundreds of interviews and internal documents, Chandrasekaran tells the story of the people and ideas that inhabited the Green Zone during the occupation, from the imperial viceroy L. Paul Bremer III to the fleet of twentysomethings hired to implement the idea that Americans could build a Jeffersonian democracy in an embattled Middle Eastern country.

In the vacuum of postwar planning, Bremer ignores what Iraqis tell him they want or need and instead pursues irrelevant neoconservative solutions—a flat tax, a sell-off of Iraqi government assets, and an end to food rationing. His underlings spend their days drawing up pie-in-the-sky policies, among them a new traffic code and a law protecting microchip designs, instead of rebuilding looted buildings and restoring electricity production. His almost comic initiatives anger the locals and help fuel the insurgency.

Chandrasekaran details Bernard Kerik’s ludicrous attempt to train the Iraqi police and brings to light lesser known but typical travesties: the case of the twenty-four-year-old who had never worked in finance put in charge of reestablishing Baghdad’s stock exchange; a contractor with no previous experience paid millions to guard a closed airport; a State Department employee forced to bribe Americans to enlist their help in preventing Iraqi weapons scientists from defecting to Iran; Americans willing to serve in Iraq screened by White House officials for their views on Roe v. Wade; people with prior expertise in the Middle East excluded in favor of lesser-qualified Republican Party loyalists. Finally, he describes Bremer’s ignominious departure in 2004, fleeing secretly in a helicopter two days ahead of schedule.

This is a startling portrait of an Oz-like place where a vital aspect of our government’s folly in Iraq played out. It is a book certain to be talked about for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars How could we have let this happen?.......2007-10-22

Though my Amazon-ordered, newly-released paperback edition of 'Imperial Life' was missing pages 191 - 194 (thanks, Vintage Books), I thoroughly enjoyed Rajiv Chandrasekaran's book. As others have noted, it's seminal reading in terms of understanding just how badly the US bollixed things up over there. All the professional review snippets in the paperback version rightly acclaim Chandrasekaran effort. As the NYT Book Review puts it, "it is eyewitness history of the first order." The late Molly Ivins sums up what every reader's reaction ought to be, regardless of political stripe: "How could we have let this happen? How could we have been that stupid?"

Everyone will have their favorite tale in here. Here's mine, which involves a business privatization effort...
-----
When the trio met with a team of Germans to discuss how factories in the former East Germany had been privatized, the CPA team was told that the Germans had eight thousand people working on the project. "How many guys do you have?" one of the Germans asked.

"You're looking at them," Corlis responded.

The German laughed and asked again. "No, how many people work for you?"

"No, this is it. Three people," Corliss said.

"Don't bother starting," the German said.
-----
That's the tone of the entire book.

Worth noting: though the reporting is set almost entirely in the bubble of the Green Zone, the author's feet are firmly planted in the Red Zone, i.e., which is basically _everything but_ the Green Zone. It's a courageous piece of work that will stand on its own legs for years to come. Kudos also to the editors at Knopf, who - as the author graciously acknowledges - pieced this reporting into a very compelling narrative.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary reading .......2007-10-22

I recommend this to my students. It is scarier than anything from the pen of Steven King, and more honest than anything from the mouths of the Bush Admin. If you want to see where trillions of your tax dollars are being wasted by greedy, incompetent ideolgues, this is a good place to start.

4 out of 5 stars More Than A "Mistake".......2007-10-21

This is good journalism, and persuasively conveys the tunnel vision, arrogance, and ignorance that together form the stew known as American foreign policy. Iraq is a "good" example of all these elements, abundantly displayed.

The weaknesses of the book--and the reason I give it only four stars--are two: first, it tells its story primarily by focusing on personalities, giving anecdotal illustrations both of the person's role and experiences in Iraq. This is very good for providing the reader with believable, understandable stories; however, it does not provide any kind of coherent "bigger picture." The author does mention surrounding events from time to time, but only as a way of providing backdrop to the anecdote or personality currently under examination.

The other problem with this book is that it presents the Coalition attack upon Iraq as simply a mistake: a series of mistakes, a patchwork of mistakes, a sad comedy of chances gone a' glimmering...but never what it was and fundamentally remains to this day: a war crime of the first order, an unprovoked attack upon a sovereign nation. Whether the author intended it or not, this view gives Americans (and others) pause only to the extent that *next time* we have to be smarter--not that there should *be* no "next time" when the US attacks another nation.

4 out of 5 stars Arrogance is not Wise.......2007-10-17

This book is quite well written, and shows the folly of arrogantly trying to rebuild Iraq after the war without having done the necessary homework on that country and with very selfish and dubious motives on the part of the Bush Administration. Nicely written book, informative and objective to the last page.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding book about the incompetence we have shown in Iraq.......2007-10-11

Any book has bias and I do not doubt that Rajiv Chandrasekaran, a journalist for the Washington Post, saw some things in Iraq in a bias way. Still, this book is a MUST read for anyone to better understand just where we went wrong in Iraq. At times, I felt I was reading a PJ O'Rourke or Carl Hiaasen book about government bureaucrats ruining yet another program. At other times, I just shook my head in disbelief and some of the arrogance and absurdity of the people put in positions of power in Baghdad. As I read the book I realized that it is no wonder that the Iraqi people are tired of us.

The author points out that many Americans were put in positions of power and authority with no real expertise or understanding of Iraqi culture or Islamic culture. Resumes from neoconservatives were all that was needed to head up programs so loyalty meant everything. The drawback, of course, was that people with no real idea of what the heck they were doing ended up bungling up everything they touched.

This book reminds me that our nation needs to stop and think of what our role is supposed to be. George Marshall, creator of the genius Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe, is spinning around in his grave right now as the incompetence in Iraq makes me wonder what happened to real leaders in our nation. Bremer? Rumsfeld? Cheney? Clueless. This book points that out with the evidence and it's a chilling reality of the mistakes we are making on an hourly basis in that nation.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars interesting, informative read.......2007-05-19

I couldn't put this book down. A friend lent me her copy, and I loved it so much I ordered my own before I was even finished reading it. I learned so much about health and beauty and the things around us that drag them down. I have gone on to some of the other books and topics mentioned in this one, and have significantly changed my lifestyle, due largely to the information from Kat's book. I recommend it to any woman who wants to take better care of herself, feel better, and look better. It won't just benefit you; it will benefit all those around you. A fun and easy read--it is definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2007-05-16

Great book loaded with information on ways to get healthier and think healthier about the way we women look.Fabulous product suggestions. She never leaves you wondering how do i do that or where do i get this?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-05-14

Though the first part of the book is somewhat mundane it more than compensates for it in the resouces section. James not only lists the best products for one's diet, skin care, healing specific problems, and anything having to do with good health, but she also lists stores where they may be found complete with addresses. Her listings are impressive and invaluable. The resouces section alone is well worth the price of the book. For anyone who neither reads nor understands labels, this book is a "must have."

5 out of 5 stars A great book that shows health and beauty go hand in hand.......2007-02-02

Even before I read The Truth about Beauty, I already bought a lot of natural and organic products, shopped at health food stores, and used traditional Chinese medicine. But despite being generally attuned to the problems with chemicals, overly processed foods, pharmaceuticals, etc., I still had some blind spots, especially when it came to issues of "beauty." For example, with my skin I was still using the old "search and destroy" method. But this book opened my eyes, and I have had much more success since I gave that up and started following James' advice about fixing the skin from the inside out.

The book does a great job of connecting health with beauty and explains a lot of concepts that even a natural food consumer might not know a lot about. For example, I had always thought of low-carb diets as being a lot of baloney (so to speak), but the way James explains the glycemic index makes total sense. I especially like her idea of "upgrading" and the specific examples she offers, like drinking spritzers instead of soda.

The resource index is also really useful, although some of the products may seem expensive. If you shop at Wal-mart for all your food and toiletries, yes, you will pay more for natural products. But if you buy department store brands like Clinique, you will be able to find plenty within your budget. Also, I find that I use a lot fewer products in general now that I've started following the kind of simple regiment James prescribes.

All in all, I would recommend this excellent book to anyone who has beauty issues.

5 out of 5 stars A life-changing book!.......2007-01-11

I had the great fortune to meet Kat James and hear her speak at the Alive! Expo in Seattle in 11/06. She is as compelling a public speaker as she is an author. She tells her own story in the book, which makes it resonate just that much more strongly. This book, simply put, has changed my life. I followed almost all of Kat's recommendations, and have used the buying guide at the back to replace many of the personal care products I used for years without thinking of the chemicals contained in them. I'm eating organic foods and have lost 25 lbs. since I read this book three months ago. I bought it for several women friends for Christmas, and they're loving it, too. I cannot recommed the book highly enough. Read more at www.informedbeauty.com

Book Description

I believe we were put on this earth to enjoy lives of joy and abundance, and that is what I want for you and for me. It's not my intention to give people advice on how to solve their problems (I leave that to my husband). But I've had my share of struggles over the years, and I know a thing or two about what has worked for me. I have chosen to be an active participant in my life rather than a spectator, and in so doing I have chosen how to be a woman, how to be a wife, and how to be a mother in ways that are uniquely my own. I offer the stories of these choices as evidence of the power of sheer determination, will, and faith in God.

You've seen her on television with her husband, Dr. Phil. But now it's time for a heart-to-heart conversation with Robin McGraw. In Inside My Heart, Robin speaks woman to woman, inspiring you to embrace and celebrate the many roles you play and encouraging you to make deliberate choices that lead to a richer, happier, and more meaningful life.

She shares with you the life-changing moments of her childhood years, dating and marrying Dr. Phil McGraw, raising two sons, and asserting herself as a woman in a man's world to show you that you have the power to make choices in your life. In fact, she's convinced that you must choose to go after the life you want.

With a deep and abiding faith in God, Robin McGraw shares her story so you too can make choices that reflect your own heart's truest priorities and highest goals.

3 out of 5 stars too preachy.......2007-10-18

The book was somewhat interesting because of who she is. I don't think that it was well written. It was too preachy for my taste.

4 out of 5 stars Nicely done........2007-10-11

I found this book to be very tasteful and inspirational. Most women can relate to Robin at least in some ways and she writes as if you are having a chat with her. I think her underlying theme sends a good positive message. I enjoyed reading it. Thanks Robin for a nice positive book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for every single and married women.......2007-10-07

Am half through this book, but yet I have found it very engaging in the way she shared her journey in life. I flipped and read briefly in the bookshop and decided to buy it before reading reviews in Amazon. I read negative comments and/or critics about the book structure, repeated messages she kept saying from the first chapter. But I disagreed with all these, this book is NOT a self help book, the topic is about choices she made in her life to become a person she is now. She didn't say it's the best choice for everyone but she showed how she got to that choice. It's not about a journal of her roles as a wife of a fairly famous person, but she shared with the reader many revealing moments in her life, either funny, sad and heartbreaking stories when she discovered a choice she believed and stick to it. I've been away from my parents' house since my twenties and after 10 years living far away from them and my siblings, I felt so close with the way I tried to live my life the best I can the way she did ((well not all the time sometimes). What I meant is to reflect every struggle in life as a lesson and how to react to it. I've been living fairly secured with my parents, afterwards living without pennies as a student, be in the lowest point in spirit and then joined this company where I have lived to the extent I've never ever imagined before but still deep inside I hold to the values I believe and those are values I carried from home till now. I truly believe her saying she hasn't changed much in terms of values from her childhood up to this point where she could write a book. As a single woman, I also found her comments on how she managed the relationships with Philips very helpful to understand and some even renew my own belief to see the thin line between loving other person and loving myself, when to hold it or just let it go. This is a great book for women who determine to keep looking for better choices in lives, in good and bad times. For some who just want to take easy road to feel as victims in life, then there would be a major work to see Robin's points.

Book Description

In her latest book, best-selling author of The Not So Big House Sarah Susanka teams up with architectural design writer Marc Vassallo to expand upon the message that has resonated with over a million homeowners and builders across the country: opting for personalized, well-crafted, thoughtfully designed spaces over superfluous square footage results in a home that comforts and nourishes those who live there.
In Inside The Not So Big House, Susanka and Vassallo focus their lens on the tangible and sometimes intangible details that bring an otherwise ordinary home to life. Incorporating such details as dropped ceilings, built-in shelves, pocket doors, window seats, and well-placed alcoves infuses a home with the character of its owners and conveys a uniqueness that's mising in many homes built or remodeled today. From Rhode Island to San Diego, the 23 homes featured here illustrate exceptional attention to detail. Each offers inspiration for those building or remodeling to transform their home into an expression of all that is important to them. "Detail is everything in design. Sarah Susanka proves it again with this, her latest book."
--John Wheatman, author, Meditations on Design and A Good House Is Never Done

5 out of 5 stars For those who want to dig a little deeper.......2007-09-02

Susanka's attention to detail is awe-inspiring, and probably more information than the average person wants, but the book has great photos and some wonderful ideas that anyone can use. If you've been able to acquire the perfect furniture, best use of space and light, but you're still missing the ingredient to really pull it all together -- balance, aesthetics, personality, etc -- this book may help you.

4 out of 5 stars Full of inspiring ideas!.......2007-03-08

I have been devouring the pages of ideas in this book. I think I have looked all through it a dozen times, because many of the concepts and ideas seem to improve and become more usable as I think them over. We live in a ca. 1970's "split-ranch" house and this book has me thinking creatively about using the space in our house in ways I haven't done before.

4 out of 5 stars Great Ideas.......2006-11-03

Read the book cover to cover and enjoyed a fresh look at residential design. As an architect myself, it made me rethink some of my own design processes. Bigger isn't always necessarily better!

4 out of 5 stars Less is most definitely more.......2006-03-22

In this astonishing book, which is filled with wonderful ideas, as well as being a beautiful coffee table book, we are granted an inside look at a truly new concept in home design in our age of teardowns and mega-mansions, a concept that smaller can be more satisfying than larger, if properly done. Here we are presented with something seldom viewed these days, how to make a house a home. There is something for every taste herein, and it is even multi-cultural, with oriental viewpoints as well on both furniture and flow of the home. Spend some time with this excellent book to see how every size home can be made more personal and beautiful, no matter what the budget.

5 out of 5 stars Great as always!.......2006-03-20

Sarah books are a staple in my books of design collection. I refer to them frequently. She has a wonderful sense of design as it relates to organization, usefullness, and asthetically pleasing. I wish more designers and architects would use her sensibility and we would not be over run with all the hideous, vapid, mac mansions everywhere. I would reccommend all of her books without hesitation.

It's about time! Julie Morgenstern has written an organizing book that covers a new way of looking at the task of organizing effectively without labeling or blaming the person behind the lack of organization. Rather, she says, people who don't organize just never learned how to organize, through no fault of their own--after all, it's not a skill that's taught in school. That said, she gets down to work helping you figure out an organizing system that will really work for you, not a system based on cookie-cutter filing concepts or special storage units.

Morgenstern's "from the inside out" system begins by laying out the possible reasons for a failure of organization: technical errors (like having a complex organizing system that breaks down), external realities (like not enough space for your belongings), and psychological obstacles (like fear of failure--or success). Then, her Analyze and Strategize steps help create a plan of action based on your needs and goals, and the brief chapter called "Attack: Getting the Job Done" offers basic ideas for making space. The largest section of the book, "Applying What You've Learned," addresses the specifics of organizing workspaces, home offices, living spaces, and storage areas. Each section has a "How Long Will It Take?" box that gives a realistic time estimate, and Morgenstern's "Julie's No-Brainer Toss List" for each area gives the permission and encouragement that most of us have been waiting for to get rid of things we'll never use again. The section at the end, "Tackling Time and Technology," is worth its weight in DayTimers and PalmPilots. Whatever your organizing issues are, you're not a hopeless case, and you don't need special equipment--just a little understanding of the problem and a willingness to plan before diving in.

Book Description

A completely revised and expanded edition of the New York Times bestselling guide to putting things in order Getting organized is a skill that anyone can learn, and there's no better teacher than America's organizing queen, Julie Morgenstern, as hundreds of thousands of readers have learned. Drawing on her years of experience as a professional organizer, Morgenstern outlines a simple organizing plan that starts with understanding your individual goals, natural habits, and psychological needs, so that you can work with your priorities and personality rather than against them. The basic steps-Analyze, Strategize, Attack-can be applied to any space or situation. In this thoroughly revised edition, Morgenstern has incorporated new information in response to feedback from her clients and audiences. These changes include- new chapters on living or working with someone who is disorganized- new chapters on organizing photographs, handbags, briefcases, and travel bags- an expanded program for organizing your kitchen- a new guide to getting started- a fully updated resource guide

5 out of 5 stars Organizing from the Inside out -2nd ed........2007-09-23

This book is very helpful to get a home and life organized. I like the way it is separated into specific areas and the specific directions to get that area in order. The directions and suggestions are easy to understand and use. The second edition is larger and contains a section I really needed to use - that of organizing photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Very good Reading.......2007-09-15

I really enjoyed reading this book and usually this type of book can be a little dull. It was very motivating and she didn't just tell you to throw all your stuff out. She gave good advice on how to organize the things you have and want to keep. She also had a way of not sounding judgemental of people just because they had a problem of keeping everything.

4 out of 5 stars Organized - not neat.......2007-08-14

One of the most important points in Organizing from the Inside Out is that being organized is not the same thing as being neat. If you want your house to look neat, you can shove everything under the bed and in the closets. Being organized means knowing where everything is and having it conveniently located to where you need it. Julie Morgenstern divides the process of getting organized into a few important steps:

1. Sort. Before you start throwing things away, figure out what all ended up in that drawer or closet. Put it in piles and put labels on the piles. This will help you figure out how to make a home for everything and/or how to make sure it doesn't end up there again. If you just throw all the trash away, that closet will most likely collect trash again.
2. Purge. Now you can throw away all that junk.
3. Attack. This is the figure out where it's all going to go. Think where it will be most helpful and easiest to keep organized. If all your books end up by the sofa, don't put them away in the office upstairs. Put a basket or a bookshelf next to the sofa.
4. Containerize. Measure everything, figure out what kind of containers would work best and then go buy them. Not before! Put nice labels on everything so the whole family knows what goes where.
5. Equalize. Spend five minutes every day putting things back in their place.

She makes a good point that people that like to organize usually end up in one of two categories:

* Those that like to purge. (This would be me. Learned from my mom.)
* Those that like to containerize. I know lots of these - they like to buy containers and shelves and things. More gadgets to hold the junk says the purger.

Skip the chapter on technology. She is obviously not a heavy computer or gadget user.

4 out of 5 stars Love this book, but I'm surprised she doesn't stress purging stuff more.......2007-07-14

First off, let me say I loved this book, got a lot of ideas from it, and use it constantly as a reference. She is a great writer, and really explored some new concepts. Do I think it could have gone a little more in-depth? Yes. What surprised me is that while she did touch on the subject of getting rid of excess clutter, she really didn't push. People will have a lot less to organize if they lose such an emotional attachment to their stuff. Maybe she didn't want to take the chance on offending some of the more hard-core pack rats, and didn't want to use "tough love". But I personally felt that she could have added some more about overcoming the emotional attachment people have to things they no longer need or use. Other than that, this is top-notch, with great websites at the end of the book to help get you organized.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Read.......2007-07-04

Who would have thought that looking at a kindergarten class room you could organize your whole life?! This book is great. I have read a few organizational books that have left no impression on me, and then I read this one. It is great - it does not tell you to throw out 80% of what you own and then organize the remaining 20%, it actually tells you how to organize everything you own. Not only that it looks into the deeper issues of what's stopping you getting organized in the first place, which then helps ensure that you will stay organized after all the hard work. The book can be read from cover to cover or you can skip to whatever section you think you need to work on first.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent examples.......2007-09-19

This book gives practical, specific advice on improving your landscape painting technique. I especially like the illustrations. The paintings are beautiful and "fresh." Not your average landscapes. They inspired me.

4 out of 5 stars shadows.......2007-09-10

Great book Good information but Kevin seems to lose his separation of the lights and shadows in some of his demos in the back of the book He talks about it but then shadows start getting to light in value and too much detail. This could be from the reproductions of his painting

3 out of 5 stars Not as much "color and light" in this one........2007-08-11

Having read this author's previous book on putting color and light in your paintings, I was a little disappointed with this one---I expected more. The book was well organized, (had, once again, pages of stuff about selecting your brushes, etc.); the author set forth his view of a limited palette, and said that you needed to be excited about your painting---but I don't believe that he was excited when he wrote this. If he was, he didn't convey it well. Had a number of exercises, some reasonable, others only for the wealthy (use an entire tube of cadmium red light on your painting (That is, really thick!)

Anyway, having read through the book, I would not buy this book again --- that's the bottom line.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful instruction for the Plein-Air artist........2007-06-27

Kevin Macpherson gives thorough instructions in his book from colors used to composition. A beautiful book with many demonstrations. I would highly recommend to the beginning or advanced Plein-Air painter in oil.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Resource.......2007-05-23

If you are an oil painter or even if you are a want-to-be painter, Kevin MacPherson's book is a terrific reference. Personally, I'm a Plein Air painter and Kevin is a master at painting on location. He covers what supplies you'll need and techniques in painting. I've had this book for some time and still refer to it often.

Book Description

“Lord, Whatever It Takes, Make Me Like You!”

You long to serve God with grace and strength, to reflect Christ in every word and action. Yet you find yourself continually struggling to bring that vision to life in your daily walk.

At our very core, every one of us is a “twisted sister” within whom the flesh and spirit battle constantly for control. We are afflicted with spiritual schizophrenia, the disconnect between our “good girl” desire to put Jesus first and our “bad girl” realities that crowd our thoughts and push him out of the way.

In this life-changing book, Joanna Weaver, author of the perennial bestseller, Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World, directs your gaze past your own shortcomings to the God who stands ready, willing, and able to make a new woman out of you. She equips you with biblical insights and practical tools to partner with Christ, inviting him into the hidden places of your soul and giving him full permission to redeem and renovate.

Drawing on the stories of biblical Marys and others whose experience with God transformed their lives, Joanna shows how you can find the hope, healing, wholeness, and joy your heart longs for. Having a Mary Spirit will launch you toward lasting personal transformation–soul-deep change that results in a complete makeover, from the inside out.

**Includes a 12-week Bible study for both individual reflection and group discussion**

5 out of 5 stars Having a Mary Spirit.......2007-10-08

This book is an amazing tool for helping you look at yourself through a spiritual magnifying glass.Whether you are a brand new Christian or a lifelong believer, this book reveals ways to take you deeper in your faith and draw you nearer to Christ!

5 out of 5 stars This is a MUST read if you are struggling to find your place in this world........2007-09-14

This book is wonderful. I love the way it is written, just as if Joanna Weaver was sitting next to you on the sofa. She lets you know that it is alright to be struggling with the same issues over and over. She tells you why and then gives you the tools to change and allowing God to change you from the inside out. Absolutely a remarkable book. I believe that it has changed my life. Do yourself a favor - read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Having a Mary Spirit is a definite work out........2007-08-13

This study has been a real spiritual work out for me. Each week as I read the chapter and the verses God's spirit has opened my heart to areas of my life where He still needs to do some work. Then He sends along a little practice for me to go along with my preaching at the study.
A great book for learning more about the true role of the third person in the Trinity in our daily lives, so we don't do what we don't want to do.

4 out of 5 stars This book is surprisingly robust with life-changing information........2007-08-13

I read Joanna Weaver's book Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World and I expected this to be similar. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover much more. The author gives a thorough explanation of how we are to live the Christian life.

Starting with the chapter "Change me, Lord", she emphasizes the necessity of allowing God to work in one's life rather than just trying harder to live up to the Christian ideal. The first half of the book deals with "how the process of change happens and why God is so intent that it does. The second half focuses on the more practical application of training our minds, guarding our hearts, and purifying our ways." -p.7.

Joanna Weaver does an excellent job of weaving her own experiences into the book so that one can identify with her struggles. I especially appreciated the chapter on "Rooting Out Bitterness." Perhaps, that is because I needed it or maybe we all need help with this.

I would recommend this book for a women's Bible study covering a chapter or two each week. That way, there is adequate time to discuss the material and seek to apply it with others who may be going through similar struggles. It is definitely a book full of information to apply, not just one to read. However, I never felt the author put me under the pile of things to do, but rather presented clearly what Christ wants to do in one's life and how to cooperate in that process.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended to women's Bible studies and Christian book clubs everywhere........2007-06-06

Without true transformation, the best many of us can do on our own is alter our behavior in efforts that in the end look more like self-improvement and sin management than actual heart change. That's why we need God to transform from the inside out. In Having a Mary Spirit, bestselling author Joanna Weaver draws on the stories of various biblical Marys as well as others who have experienced true transformation through God's power and grace.

It's been more than six years since Weaver finished writing the wildly popular Having A Mary Heart in a Martha World, but she still hasn't lost her ability to connect with women and delve deeply into the issues that many of us face on a daily basis. She points out that a number of women struggle between their good-girl spirit and their bad-girl fleshly desires. In any given situation, one side may win over the other. But the key is transformation through our relationship with God.

Weaver explains that how we think can often affect how we behave and underlines the importance of placing all of our thoughts before God. She writes:

"God has recently been convicting me of such careless thinking. Of allowing thoughts to come and go much like cars crossing the Oklahoma-Arkansas border. No roadblocks. No checkpoints. No sin-sniffing dogs. No discipline of the will. Careless thinking is a dangerous habit. For as our thoughts go, so go our emotions. And as our emotions go, so often goes our faith. If the Enemy can get me confused, he can get me discouraged. If he can get me discouraged, he can cause me to doubt."

The transformation is responsible for taking every thought captive, according to 2 Corinthians 10:5, and bringing them into obedience to Christ. She points to the power of Scripture in the transformation process.

The book circles around what Christians can do to become more like Jesus. Many of the tips are practical but welcome reminders. Listen more and speak less. Refuse to gossip. Avoid arguments. Get rid of iffy language. Choose humility. Turn to scripture. Pray constantly.

Throughout the book, Weaver quotes dozens and dozens of writers, pastors and thinkers, many of whom are popular in evangelical circles, including Max Lucado, Charles Stanley, Chip Ingram and Elisabeth Elliott. Readers will enjoy the insights from a long list of well-known authors, though at times they will want to know more of what Weaver thinks and feels from her own words and expression.

One of the great strengths of Having A Mary SPIRIT is that it points us toward the One who can truly transform us. It explains that nothing is beyond God's redemption and provides biblical insights and tools to accompany readers on the journey.

In addition, readers will find a helpful bonus feature: a 12-week Bible study designed for individual or group use that allows for digging deeper into the scripture. Recommended to women's Bible studies and Christian book clubs everywhere.
