Book Description

Love Is Never Painless

Truer words have never been spoken. This heart-wrenching collection of novellas brings that statement to life in three unique ways, penned by three of the generation's most prolific authors.

In Eileen M. Johnson's "How the Other Half Lives," Jamellah and Fernecia have been friends since forever. Having escaped the poverty of their youth together, they both had made their mark in society. However, men problems threaten to make them literally fall apart. Fernecia is married to a man who was raised to think he is better than everyone -- even his own wife. Jamellah has always used men to get ahead but eventually everything catches up to her. The two friends must ultimately count on each other in a world of havoc and distrust.

In V. Anthony Rivers's "Love Is 2 Blame," Malcolm is devastated after a two-year relationship with Shaylisa ends. He finds it difficult to function because he cannot comprehend why she would want to end such a perfect situation. He was everything she had asked for; he treated her with respect and showered her with love. Yet love was not enough. Trying to move on to someone new will not be as easy as it used to be, but will the lovely Zahara show Malcolm what true love is all about?

In Zane's "Staring Evil in the Face," Robier has everything a man could ever wish for: a stable and rewarding career, two beautiful children, an elegant home, and the woman of his dreams. Having loved Tiphanie since college, he is determined to keep his marital vows until . . . Tiphanie is involved in a horrible car accident that changes the entire course of their lives.

From nervous breakdowns to drug addiction, Love Is Never Painless explores the deeper side of love; the side rarely explored in romance novels. Zane, Johnson, and Rivers have penned a powerful collection of novellas that will not only have readers talking but also examining their own relationships with a new perspective.

My girlfriend enjoyed the book very much. She's a fan of Zane and this book is a reason why.

5 out of 5 stars Change.......2007-08-02

This book was heart-felt and realistic. I love the change of pace but look forward to getting back to what drew me to her books.

5 out of 5 stars A real eye-opener!.......2007-06-24

This book was wonderfully written! The authors did a great job with the stories which focused on LOVE ! And also made me realize the importance of it! This book was a real eye-opener and will defianantly touch your heart more ways than one!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book..........2007-06-10

I typically love Zane. Her writing is bold, crisp and powerful. Her images are vivid and come through quite clearly in her writing. A new author also caught my eye, his style is very similar. Shombay Kimoni's "A Black College Nightmare". These books are both quite similar and powerful. I would suggest them both. I planned and am reading everything else both authors write.

This book was okay, but not a Zane great. I know she didn't write all the stories but I found the last story in the book to be the best but not great. I was expecting a book that you can't put down and this book was far from it.

It'll be a good fun bedtime story for little ones, your children will love it. Reading and singing can be motivating to foreign students from 5 to 7, it can be used at a sleepover

5 out of 5 stars Amazon Books rock!.......2006-04-09

Good book, great price! Even better than you can get in-store. My wife wanted this book for our baby's collection because she grew up with this book and she loved it as a child. This book gives children the pictures to go along with the related song, too.

1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2006-03-16

This book is boring, doesn't teach the child anything new (might as well just sing the easy lyrics), and the illustrations are dull. Waste of money!

4 out of 5 stars Daughter's Favorite Bedtime Story.......2006-01-30

This has become our daughter's favorite bedtime story. She's 3 1/2 and I wish that I had gotten the book earlier. She likes to read along with us, and has each monkey say "goodnight mama" in different voices. At first she wanted to jump on the bed as well but she didn't liked being called a silly monkey.

5 out of 5 stars No more jumping on the bed.......2005-09-30

One of my daughter's favorite. Her playdates all like the book too. They like to say it with me. No more jumping on the bed.
I highly recomend because kids will see how the monkeys get hurt and cry with the booboos. Keila is 27 months old

5 out of 5 stars Cravings.......2007-09-05

I really enjoyed this book. I"ve read all of Laurell Hamiltons books and am now starting on MaryJanice Davidson. I was disappointed to find that there was no continuation of the other two writers characters as I found them to be very interesting and would have liked to read more about them.

2 out of 5 stars Incubus Dreams.......2007-08-22

The Laurell K. Hamilton contribution to this collection is taken directly from her book Incubus Dreams. What a rip off for Anita Blake fans.

4 out of 5 stars Summer reading.......2007-06-10

Great little collection of short stories to read whilst enjoying a relaxing summer day. No great earth-shaking revelations or deep philosophy - just a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Cravings is great.......2007-01-28

I loved the book. The stories were well writtin. I have the complete set of Anita Blake series by Ms. Hamilton, so I knew her story would be great. The other 3 stories were great as well.

4 out of 5 stars Three All-Stars and one Bench Warmer.......2006-10-16

Great read! Three wonderful authors: MaryJanice Davidson, Eileen Wilks and Rebecca York. Also, the late great Laurell K. Hamilton whose name alone used to make us want to pick up the book. Alas, that is so not the case anymore.

In "Dead Girls Don't Dance" (MaryJanice Davidson) you have a young vampire who has just run into the man of her teenage dreams. It's cute, funny, you fall in love with the folks in this story. I want to see more of Ms. Andrea Mercer. I hope she writes another story about her.

"Originally Human" (Eileen Wilks) is a bit different. Once again we have characters we can identify with and like. A very likeable Molly finds an injured man and tries to help. Not much of a hook but I don't want to give away the surprises in this very good story.

"Burning Moon" (Rebecca York) has a werewolf tracking his wife's killer and finding a lot more than he bargained for. Some good (new) werewolf family information. This is another one I hope with be continued.

Oh, let's face it: all three of these stories (especially the first two) are just so darn good you don't want them to end. I truly hope the authors read this review some day and it encourages them to write more on the characters. I just loved 'em all.

Guess I should say something about Hamilton's "Blood Upon My Lips". Let's see, it's the new and extremely UNimproved Anita Blake wanting to have sex. (Yawn) Oh wait. When DOESN'T the new and UNimproved Anita Blake want to have sex? With anybody. Or anything. Lordy, the family pets won't be safe if this keeps up. "Hide the collie, maw, that freak Blake is hanging around outside again." If Hamilton insists on Blake screwing ANYthing available I wish she'd be a little quieter about it. The constant screaming has got to be getting on everyone's nerves. It's certainly getting on mine. Oh, and if there are any of the OLD Blake fans out there -- you remember Anita Blake VAMPIRE HUNTER? Well, that Blake died a couple of books ago and some unattractive, whiney, Valley girl from Hell has taken her place.

Please God. Let "Edward" show up fully armed and take us all out of our misery. Also, make sure he shoots first and asks questions later. If not, the Valley Girl will certainly attempt to molest him and anyone he has with him. Where the heck is Otto when you need him?

Finally, yes buy or borrow the book. It is well worth it. Just skip the first story and enjoy yourself with the remaining three.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Worth buying for the Karen Chance and Patricia Briggs stories..........2007-10-22

The problem I find with anthologies is you tend to buy them for one (or maybe two) stories. Therefore I shall admit my bias straight off and say I bought On the Prowl for the Patricia Briggs story.

Alpha and Omega by Patricia Briggs.
Set in the Mercy Thompson universe (Moon Called, Blood Bound). Alpha and Omega follows Charles (the son of werewolf king Bran) when he comes to Chicago to deal with unrest in the Chicago pack. Although this story takes place during Moon Called it's not necessary to have read Moon Called to enjoy this story.

Not surprisingly I really liked this. It's also a story I've dipped back into whilst reading the other three. My favourite part being when Anna initially calls Bran for help. In a way this serves as an introduction to Anna and Charles who will be getting their own series of books in 2008, so there is something of a feeling that there is more to come. If I had any quibbles it would be that on p69 Anna smells Boyd's blood but Boyd wasn't involved in the fighting. So surely it should be Justin's blood? Rate - 4/5

Inhuman by Eileen Wilks.
As I'm not familiar with the Universe this is set in, I found it unsatisfying. I feel strongly that even if a short story is set in an ongoing series, it should be able to stand on its own. However, I felt like I'd come in part way through the action, the characters were talking about things I knew nothing about. The situation is ultimately resolved by magical means so I didn't feel like it had really been dealt with. The heroine wasn't that interesting, but Nathan was well written, I could have read more about him and how he saw the world. One for the fans who'll have a better idea of what's going on and might enjoy it more. Rate - 2.5/5

Buying Trouble by Karen Chance.
This was my second favourite. I thought the story had real humour and the characters were engaging. It had a bit of a slow start, but following the gamelans escape, the story had much more pace. Claire's transformation scene was very well done, and Heidar has a way with the witty remark. Claire had an appealing voice and I could happily read more about her. Based on this short story I'd definitely check out Karen Chance's backlist. Rate - 3.5/5

Mona Lisa Betwining by Sunny
I have only read Book 1 of the Mona Lisa series. And if you're in the same position you may want to give this one a miss - because it's got huge spoilers in it regarding the death of a character.

There is very little plot here. There's quite a bit of exposition bringing you up to date with what's happened - kind of like a 'Previously in the Mona Lisa Universe...'. It's more of a filler between books and is probably only interesting if you're a fan of the series. Nothing really happens, and it happens for about 60 pages.

Also, similarities between the Mona Lisa world and both Laurell K.Hamilton's Merry Gentry and Anne Bishop's Black Jewels stories are slightly grating to say the least. 0/5

Disregrading Mona Lisa Betwining I'm giving the anthology a four overall. Worth checking out. :)

2 out of 5 stars Fine, if you're looking for coming attractions only..........2007-10-11

As some other reviewers have noted, I was disappointed to find that the offerings from Briggs and Wilks are not short stories so much as trailers for future novels. This is not what I expect when purchasing an anthology.

The Briggs entry in particular, while very well written, was an utter letdown when I discovered that after committing to 72 pages, I would have to wait till August of NEXT YEAR to find out what happens with these characters.

Next time, I'll wait till the full-length versions are out, and then buy the previous anthology along with them...

2 out of 5 stars Stories stop short.......2007-10-10

I bought this book with great excitement, having seen the authors on the cover. However, it dawned on me after the first story (plus the teaser at the end was a clue) that these are only partial stories. Not short stories, only the first chapters of one. The stories are just advertisements for other books. So, if you like a plot that ends too quickly, that forwards you to other works of the author, this publication is for you. If you would like a story with a complete beginning, middle and ending, pick up something else.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant distraction; all well written.......2007-09-18

"On the Prowl" contains two novellas and two short stories. The settings are modern day with magical/mystical elements added -- witches, were wolves, dragons, etc. An abused and shy werewolf finds the courage to ask for help and gets more than she expects. A lonely psychic with a trecherous talent finds life-long friends. A witch and an elf flee trouble together in a fast-paced adventure with fun twists. A sexy lady has an erotic interlude.

All four stories are by established authors, and each tries to interest you in reading other books in that author's series. Three are more fantasy than romance, and the fourth mostly erotica. All four are well written stories that can be read in isolation that (gasp!) have strong endings and no padding. The stories include some elements that young or sensitive readers may find disturbing, including slavery, rape, and anal intercourse. Altogether, I found these tales a pleasant distraction. The "please read the continuation" plea is the norm today, as most books encourage the reader to purchase a sequel -- don't be put off by this aspect.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Anthology.......2007-09-10

This was an introduction into Patricia Briggs and Karen Chance for me, and I promptly went out and bought the other Mercy Thompson books. I was frustrated by the "to be continued in the full-length novel" endings of the first two stories, though. While I understand the desire on the publisher's behalf to introduce new readers to their authors, a well-written short story can do that just as well as, or better than, a teaser. However, I liked the first three stories enought to check out other offerings from the authors. The fourth story by Sunny was a waste of ink and paper. I couldn't even finish the story, and this is from someone who has made it through all of the Anita Blake stories, even the ones written from Narcissus in Chains on. This anthology loses a star for the Sunny story. Otherwise, it's a decent read.

Book Description

While you are on that big ship, Daddy, far, far away I tell you things. I pretend the wind can carry my words clear across the ocean right to your heart. At times a loved one may be far, far away, but that special person is never far from mind and heart. Eileen Spinelli's lyrical, patriotic text and Rene Graef's uplifting illustrations depicting military families combine to create a reassuring book about separation and reunion.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.............2007-01-19

The pictures in this book are beautiful. The sentiment was sweet too. My 4-year old didn't connect to it at all. He was confused by all the different branches of the military being included and the Mommy being deployed scared him to death! Poor thing just had Daddy leave him. He doesn't need to wonder about Mommy leaving too. We gave this book away..... :(

5 out of 5 stars Great choice.......2006-07-20

I'm not sure if I'll be able to read this book to my baby without crying. Great choice for children with deployed parents.

5 out of 5 stars Good for all branches.......2006-03-10

I just read this book to my daughter, and we loved it. It gives the perspective of three children whose parents are a sailor, an airwoman, and a soldier. It was touching, with the children missing their parents who are far, far away. It's not the best of Spinelli's work, but my daughter was able to see that other military children miss their parents while they are separated, as well. I definitely recommend it to all military families with young children. Perfect for toddlers to early school-age!

5 out of 5 stars You Know You've Been Through a Deployment and Homecoming if You Can't Get Through The End of This Book!!!.......2005-09-02

This book is amazing. The illustrations are so beautiful, and the emotions very real. The author captures the feelings without being overly wordy or sappy. Very well written.

Since this book was so special to my children (and me) during my husband's last deployment, I've shared it with other friends' families during their deployments, and also with my children's teachers to read in their classrooms. They've all given it rave reviews. The teachers especially wanted their own copies to be able to read to the military children in their classes each year, since deployments are routine in our neighborhood.

5 out of 5 stars A Touching and Timely Book.......2004-05-01

Our world is facing uncertain times to say the least. In many cases, those who are paying a great price during these times are the young children of the soldiers stationed overseas. Eileen Spinelli, wife of author Jerry Spinelli addresses these young people and the issues they face in her book WHILE YOU ARE AWAY. The book tells of a variety of young children who will do various things to remember their parents serving in the military until Mom or Dad returns home again. The soldiers are both fathers and mothers and the children are various races and nationalities which gives the book a broad appeal. Renee Graef's beautiful illustrations add to the charm of this timely book.

This book is a must for the children of our service men and women as they cope with an overwhelming situation in their young lives, but will also help other young people understand the challenges facing many of their neighbors, classmates, and friends. We should be thankful such a book has been written, but let us also hope that the situation our world finds itself in may be resolved quickly so that this book can be outdated very soon.

The author has lived and worked in parks ranging from USS Arizona in Hawaii to the Florida Everglades with most of her career at Grand Canyon.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars review of Park Ranger.......2007-09-22

This book was a quick read. There is a lot of interesting information about our national park system. The stories were interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for anyone........2007-07-01

I ran across this title by accident -- it looked interesting, and I bought it, being a frequent visitor to our National Parks. I thought that it would give me more-or-less an idea of what a typical ranger's day was like, but it didn't! In fact, it was much more than that! You see, Nancy Mecham is not only a ranger, but also a paramedic and a law enforcement officer. In reading the book, I learned a lot about basic law enforcement procedures and also what paramedics do on the scene.

Each chapter is a story in itself, most of the time, based on the author's own experiences. The writing style varies a little from the first chapter to the last, but this might have happened if the author compiled the manuscript over a long length of time. No matter, though -- it doesn't take away from the excitement of the book. You will find all of the stories interesting -- each in a different way.

This is a good read. Buy the book, enjoy a chapter or two at a time, and then, loan it to a friend. I especially recommend this book for a young person considering a career with the Park Service or possibly in paramedics or law enforcement. It will also make all of us better visitors to the National Parks.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting read!.......2006-12-17

This is a wonderful depiction of life with the National Park Service, from training to working as a Law Enforcement Officer, paramedic, naturalist, and fire fighter. The stories are exciting, humorous, and amazing accounts of what it is like to be a ranger. Keeps you turning the pages to see what could possibly happen next. Definitly recommended for those interested in the Park Service as a career!

Excellent account of the experiences of a National Park Ranger, and her experiences in various parks. Her accounts of law enforcement, EMT and fire fighting experiences are enlightening. Very well written.

I loved this book. The stories are riveting. I'm an avid backpacker; I find myself reflecting on this book while I'm in the backcountry. I usually have a short attention span, but I was captivated by the variety of situations and stories. One thing that I really enjoy is how the author assumes that you're intelligent enough to want to know what's going in the different medical situations. Most books that I pick up these days don't appeal to people that want to educate themselves; if you have any interest in medicine, the outdoors, adventure or interesting people, buy this book. Dr. Nancy Eileen Muleady-Mecham is one of those poeple that makes you wonder "how can one person do all that?" If you've ever visited a national park, you may or may not realize what these people do behind the scenes. They're expected to be protectors of our resources, law enforcement, fire fighters, medical technicians, and experts on the local environment. If you've ever gotten into trouble in the backcountry, you know these people are angels. They love their job and they have the best office in the whole world. There's not a lot of books out there that give you real insight on what goes on in a national park; this is the one to get. After reading this book, I have more respect than ever for what the rangers do; Dr. Muleady-Mecham is at the head of her class. If you know any young people that are considering a future in the National Park Service (or aren't sure what they want to be) - BUY THEM THIS BOOK!!

5 out of 5 stars Joy and Love in Poetry and Pictures.......2007-01-12

My three-year old daughter and I first enjoyed this book by borrowing it from our local library. It only took one reading to realize that this was one for our home library.
The poetic text is sweet without being saccharine. The words convey all the ways a family loves a child through thick and thin with humor and a touch of reverence. I was intially unsure whether my daughter would be engaged by this less-story and more-poem type of text, but she often recites the lines right along with me.
And then there are the illustrations...just amazing. The colors, textures, and images draw the reader into a bright and shining world that is both wide and oh-so-cozy. Even on the pages where the text speaks of sadness or sickness, you feel somehow safe and content. Each spread features the main characters along with "hidden" vignettes featuring the little girl's dolls and a maverick moon who follows along with the sentiments page by page.
I write an e-newsletter for my local moms' group, and this book was the reason I decided our newsletter needed a "Book of the Month" column. "When You Are Happy" was the first book featured, and I truly hope that every one of the 135 moms in our group picks up a copy to share with her kids.
Happy reading.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book Speaks The Heart of All Parents.......2006-12-14

The first time I read this book to my daughter, it made me cry. It said exactly what I feel about her in a way that I don't think I could - or at least not that I would have considered. It really puts words to that special love that parents, grandparents and even siblings have for children. This is the second book by this author and illustrator team. The first, Do You Have a Hat, was one of my daughter's favorites. This book has a very different feel thematically but is just as wonderful. The illustration is beautiful and rich and exciting in both. This is definitely one we need to own (having only recently borrowed it from the library). If you want your child to know how much they are loved, how safe they are, and how much joy they bring, read them this book.

5 out of 5 stars Cozy, Soothing Read.......2006-07-29

What a delightful spell Eileen Spinelli weaves with this soothing, colorful book that was probably written for her grandchildren. It's the perfect goodnight read, as it gently reminds children that they are loved. When they are sad, they'll be held. When they're cold, they'll be warmed. When they're sick, they'll be babied. When they're afraid, they'll be supported. Best of all, when they're lost, they'll be searched for like rare treasure. "I will wear out my shoes and a dozen little rays of hope," writes Spinell, "but...I WILL find you!"

I found this book recently and am reading it to my boys every night. It talkes about fear, sadness, being lost and how the parent makes the kids always feel better. I can identify with the book and read it with a passion that comes from the bottom of my heart. It is so true to the nature of parenthood. Fun to read and my boys love it as well. Great book to have in your collection.

Book Description

On March 9, 1916, a band of Mexican marauders led by Pancho Villa crossed the border and raided the tiny town of Columbus, New Mexico. A military expedition was hastily organized to go into Mexico and capture Villa, suspects were rounded up, trials were held, and a virulent backlash against persons of Mexican origin erupted on the local and national scenes. General John Black Jack Pershing, once a genuine fan of Villas, accompanied by a young George Patton, was told to assemble a group of soldiers, head into Mexico, and get Villadead or alive. The last hurrah for the U.S. Cavalry, the expedition would be the first time armored tanks, airplanes, and trucks were employed against an enemy. But as they descended into the nightmare of Mexico, the American troops were followed by spies and picked off by snipers, fought violent battles, and suffered in the scorching deserts and snowy mountains. Some would never return home alive. A brutal tale of revenge and violence, Eileen Welsomes richly detailed account is equal parts Sam Peckinpah, Cormac McCarthy, and Stephen Ambrose.

5 out of 5 stars Pancho Villa and Black Jack Pershing.......2007-07-14

As one who fell in love with Mexico in 1964, I continue to read most of what comes out in print with relation to that country. This book has information about Pershing that I knew nothing about, and reveals much of a personal nature about him and about Francisco Villa.

The struggles of the U. S. soldiers as they search for the elusive Villa
make an interesting story-- one that got lost because the incursion into Mexico was followed so quickly by World War I. I wonder, for example, how many of the soldiers who were in Mexico went on to the European war.

I had the great good fortune to hear a lecture by one of Villa's secretaries.

I am still in love with Mexico after all these years!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent account of the events in Mexico before WWI.......2007-06-12

The author has done her homework with this fine piece of history. I have read much on this subject and was hoping to find out more details about the Punitive Expedition mounted by America to track down Pancho Villa and his bandit army. She paints Villa and the other leaders of the 'Revolution' as most of them were: brutal killers seeking wealth and power and a few betterment of the people of Mexico. Lots of details about the Villiast raid on Columbus, NM, the numerous skirmishes between US troops and various factions of Mexican forces of all sorts.
Plenty of drama and some good information about Villa's background, experiences during the revolution as well as those of Obregon, Madero, Zapata and many others.
Worth reading as her style is easy to follow and sometimes humerous and insightful.
I give it thumbs up. Enjoy as it might lead the reader to seek more information about this fascinating period of US/Mexican history.

4 out of 5 stars The Columbus Raid and its aftermath........2007-06-04

A former guerrilla ally of the United States turns his vengence on the U.S. A President who wanted to tend to the domestic ills of the United States is drawn into a foreign conflict. An intervention is attempted which results in native aggravation at the United States. History repeats itself. The time is 1916 and the terrorist act is at Columbus, New Mexico-a sleepy border town. Pancho Villa kills a lot of innocent men. Americans are now his enemy. The Americans intervene in Mexico and try to track him down. They nearly suceed. Time give Villa the punishment he deserves.

This is an interesting book about earlier terrorism. Not much is written about the Columbus raid. Welsome does a good job of describing the killings of Pancho Villa and his Division of the North in the 1916-17 period. This should be read in light of the current war on terror.

3 out of 5 stars a little too much fluff.......2007-06-03

I enjoyed the book, but I thought it could have been shortened considerably if Welsome would have left out the numerous paragraphs about what someone was thinking or might have thought as they rode a horse through the mountains. It had a little too much fluff for me and for a book that has a title that indicates it is about 2 military leaders I was left with the feeling it was a so-so attempt to create a romanticized old west tale. I would have liked to seen more actual military history instead of the speculation fluff that fills so many pages. The book is nice but if you want a military history book, this isn't it.

4 out of 5 stars Good book about Villas' Columbus Raid.......2007-03-19

The book is excellent from a historical perspective. Ms. Welsome thoroughly researched the topic and presented her findings in a very readable manner. The only negative is that it wasn't told as exciting as some other period non-fiction I've read. But this is really nitpicking though, as I thought it was a fine book all things considered.

A New York Review Books Original

“[A] giant of modern Chinese literature” – The New York Times

"With language as sharp as a knife edge, Eileen Chang cut open a huge divide in Chinese culture, between the classical patriarchy and our troubled modernity. She was one of the very few able truly to connect that divide, just as her heroines often disappeared inside it. She is the fallen angel of Chinese literature, and now, with these excellent new translations, English readers can discover why she is so revered by Chinese readers everywhere." – Ang Lee

Eileen Chang is one of the great writers of twentieth-century China, where she enjoys a passionate following both on the mainland and in Taiwan. At the heart of Chang’s achievement is her short fiction—tales of love, longing, and the shifting and endlessly treacherous shoals of family life. Written when Chang was still in her twenties, these extraordinary stories combine an unsettled, probing, utterly contemporary sensibility, keenly alert to sexual politics and psychological ambiguity, with an intense lyricism that echoes the classics of Chinese literature. Love in a Fallen City, the first collection in English of this dazzling body of work, introduces American readers to the stark and glamorous vision of a modern master.

    Book Description

    Just the fax, ma'am.

Alissa Lindley didn't mean to take it out on the fax machine. But when your not-yet-ex-husband knocks up his girlfriend and your divorce is going worse than the next World War -- well, something's got to give. Unfortunately, Alissa's employers at the L.A. Public Defender's office take a dim view of the destruction of office equipment. Funny how that anti-workplace violence policy used to seem like a good idea, before she got fired. And the networking thing just isn't happening at her Anger Management class.

    He was arrestingly handsome.

San Jose is the place for a fresh start -- it's home, and family and friends are eagerly waiting to welcome her. But her first job as a lawyer there has Alissa walking a high wire of complicated emotions. Her client is from the Butterfly Brigade, a group of justice-seeking (and interestingly tattooed) ladies who right wrongs as they see fit even if that means bending the law. The arresting officer, Detective Rodriguez, is so hot he should be illegal. But can Alissa trust her instincts again when it comes to love? Or will one wrong step send her new life crashing down?

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Okey Dokey.......2007-03-04

This isn't something I'd normally read, but pretty good overall.

I feel like the author should have run on a little more drama about the ex and the cop. Seemed to be more about the "Butterfly Brigade" than the main character.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable from beginning to end.......2006-06-24

Eileen Rendahl has taken some pretty serious situations; divorce, infidelity, crime, and self-worth, and put a bittersweet twist on them. The situations are sad, but the twist she puts on them has you shaking your head and saying, "been there, done that." Alissa seems like she could be your sister, or your friend. The 'this could be you' feeling of the story brings it close to home, and close to your heart. Can't wait to read the rest of Rendahl's books.

4 out of 5 stars Butterfly Brigade, here I come!.......2006-04-04

After "Do Me, Do My Roots," I couldn't wait for this one. What worked for me was that the author wrote great characters I could relate to, and it was hard for me to put down. Also, the author had me rooting for the Butterfly Brigade. What didn't work for me was that I had trouble believing Alissa's anger-management struggle past the first couple of chapters. I know she was put on Prozac, but I needed to feel that drug-induced numbness along with her. Other than that, it was a great read. Plus I liked how each chapter starts with a page from the Anger Management workbook.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and suprisingly thoughtful.......2006-03-31

When Defense lawyer Alissa Lindley loses her husband to another woman, and her job to a stress-related blowup triggered by the aforementioned (in which a fax machine is the somewhat comical victim), she moves from LA to San Jose to start her life anew. Through her first client, she meets the Butterfly Brigade - a group of women working just outside the law to make the world a better place - and it sets in motion a series of life-altering questions.

Although it's marketed like straight-up romantic chick-lit, Balancing in High Heels is actually more of a lighthearted look at the relationship between anger, frustration, powerlessness and the ability to change, with a little bit of romance and self-discovery along the way. In its pages Rendahl creates a funny and occasionally insightful narrator, who completes an interesting emotional journay, and the book is full of slightly archetypal, but still very relateable secondary characters.

The romance aspect was (in my opinion) a bit underdeveloped - the book bit off a little more than it could chew in terms of achieving that a romantic happy ending - but overall, as a thoughtful book that's fun rather than preachy, Heels will have you sometimes pausing, sometimes nodding, but always laughing and turning pages.

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious, a must read!.......2006-01-22

I absolutely loved this book! I swear every other page had me in tears laughing! First book I read by Eileen Rendahl and I couldn't get enough. If you liked this book read "Do me, do my roots", another great book by Ms. Rendahl.
