Book Description
Experimental, inventive, provocative and above all visionary, Gloria Anzaldua's work is widely recognized among scholars of Chicano/Latino, Gay and Lesbian, Women's, Postcolonial, Ethnic and Cultural Studies as a foundational elaboration of the politics and poetics of cultural hybridity. Both Borderlands/La Frontera and Making Face/Making Soul: Haciendo Caras are all about understanding the complex and competing social, political and cultural forces that shape-sometimes quite brutally-the experiences of women of color in the U.S., and they are all about taking that understanding and mobilizing it toward creative and revisionary efforts for making social change.
"One of the 100 Best Books of the Twentieth Century"-Hungry Mind Review (Spring 1999)
"Anzaldua's voyage of discovery, focused on the border and the new mestiza, is a preparation for the future. The border is a bundle of contradictions and ambiguities... This hybrid crossroads is just the right kind of training ground. It is fertile area for mutations and transformations. In Borderlands/ La Frontera, Gloria Anzaldua is our guide with an all-encompassing vision to charge the border with meaning."-The Americas Review
"[She] explores in prose and poetry the murky, precarious existence of those living on the frontier between cultures and languages. . . .she meditates on the conditions of Chicanos in Anglo culture, women in Hispanic culture, and lesbians in the straight world. ...a powerful document."-Library Journal
A "Best of 1987" Library Journal selection.
"Anzaldua's vision encompasses spiritual and experiential aspects of female power, as well as the day-to-day courage and struggle that has characterized Chicano survival."-The San Francisco Chronicle
Customer Reviews:
Classic.......2007-06-28
Not much can be said to some of the postings I see here--to those that suggest the third tier prose, those that call this work "racist," those that implore statements like "I hated it." These are the same people that vote for their own oppression, these are the very people that fancy their success on some sense of entitlement. Relax, you do not have to agree, but hear me out.
Classic. Classic.
With the colorful enagement of gender, consciousness, and subconscious indeterminacy, the creation of a new utopia (racial, linguistic, gender, cultural, etc) is suggested by the prose of self actualization. This book is about all of us--it is about the exchanges we have with domination, be it familial or societal. It's loose diction is its very strength, it does not confide to the subordination of patriachal, hegemonic forces of tradition. The reflexive allegorical stories and unpacking of our human complexity give it a breathing body and a compelling face.
Anzaldua suffered greatly for not writing like "the male pimps," those that claim a fanatical space in some high art and legitimacy canon. It was her filter of difference, it was her cries for something else, that connects with everyone at a spiritual level. I do not know how this can be connected to some mundane powerpoint presentation at a university; this piece involves the full of enagement of mind, body, and soul. To contextualize it--one needs to read consistently. In order to feel out her domain, one must be willing go beyond what "our mom said" or "what our 6th grade teacher" told us about this and that. This about the struggle for agency; this about search for Thoreau's Walden amidst sociohistorical forces that still "do not see."
Welcome it. This classic work of literature, philosophy, education...remains one of the most unrecognized treatises on being and becoming.
Overrated Drivel.......2007-01-16
I find it interesting that such a supposedly important and relevant contemporary work has only been reviewed by 11 people at the time of this writing. That alone tells you all you need to know since this is a book that is classed under both Latino and Women's Studies, and is part of many university literary programs.
The book is pretentious claptrap of the worst kind. If this book were judged on its merits rather than by popular, politically correct notions, it wouldn't come close to making the cut.
Alas, academia has embraced the book as a great work, and so it is required reading for an English M.A. program at a major university that I was accepted into. An English M.A.! Once I saw that this book was part of the program, I didn't even bother registering.
I don't mind rants against social, cultural and economic injustices. I've read many. But Ms. Anzaldua is no James Baldwin, that's for sure.
an excruciatingly painful read - only do so if you must.......2006-09-18
This book is a tormented stream of consciousness from a lady who was obviously fighting major demons. It is exactly the type of book that you would expect an amateur academic to "wow" and "gush" over, as it nicely fits into the dogmatic radicalism of Chicano Studies. The discerning reader, on the other hand, sees page after page of outdated cliches, sob-stories, and anger-filled tantrums. Anzaldua would like you to believe her suffering and self-searching is all the fault of the "white" culture encroaching upon the enlightened cosmic race of the mestiza. She'd like you to think that her mestiza/chicana/lesbian/female identity is the sole cause of her misfortune and hardship. What becomes overwhelmingly evident upon reading her unabashed torrent of decadent self-pity is the learned and self-enforced quality of her "opression". Anzaldua helplessly wallows in her romantic fatalism dreaming of the great mestiza revolution that will fix all of the world's problems by turning the middle class value system upside down.
If you like romantic literature, and enjoy the hopeless and sorrowful ramblings of society's self-marginalized, I might suggest "The Sorrows of the Young Werther" by Goethe or some poems by Lord Byron - at least then you get some literary value.
Racist Garbage.......2006-08-08
While most reviewers seem to be bent on lauding Gloria Anzaldúa's "insightful and progressive" writings, I can't help but take a different viewpoint. The vast majority of her essays, while cloaked in a sense of righteous equality, are quite simply racist drivel. She speaks of acceptance and tolerance for foreign cultures in America, and harps on the evils of correcting students when they use improper English, yet instills her writing with a blatant and offensive racism.
I make specific reference to the article "How to Tame A Wild Tongue". In her conclusion, she praises the perseverance and endurance of the mestizo race/culture, making reference to walking by "the crumbling ashes" of American civilization. An eagerness is felt to see the day that "white laws and commerce will rot in the desert". One would be hard pressed to come up with a more hypocritical conclusion. Here is an author preaching tolerance and acceptance of different languages and cultures throughout her entire article. She whines about the troubles she had fitting in with English speaking people. She goes in depth to explain the numerous bastardizations of Spanish that are spoken in various Hispanic cultures and tries to convince us of how each is a viable language, even so-called "Spanglish", just a blend of English and Spanish that you might hear in a high school Spanish I class ("el chairo = chair,la ceilingo = ceiling, etc.) . And after all that talk of acceptance, she ends by completely blasting American culture and expressing her wish to see it crumble to dust, while at the same time presenting the mestizo as the dominant race which will endure this fall. Talk about racist. I understand pride of your country and people, but this goes far beyond simple nationalism, especially in light of the overall message of the article. Tolerance is right out the window here.
Don't be fooled by Anzaldúa's overly wordy diction and pseudo-intellectualism. She is a flat out racist that for some reason is tolerated (forget that, praised to the roof!) in many academic circles. Her educational philosophy is naive, irresponsible, and fundamentally flawed. Hopefully her writings will soon fall out of the limelight.
Borderlands/La Frontera's Philosophical import.......2006-05-02
Other reviewers have covered many of the qualities of the work, so I want to dwell on just one point - don't be fooled into thinking that this work is useful only as a personal study on Anzaldua's cultural/gender/queer theory.
Anzaldua is of high importance to any philosophy of the social; within her writing you can find the key insights of figures such as Derrida and Nietzsche, as they relate to personal identity crafted out of a fractured heritage. Her point is that we are ALL borderlanders given that the human condition involves being stretched across a chasm of self-alterity. Only through a full recognition of this can a critical inventory of the self be undertaken, which is a prerequisite to responsibility and genuine care of the self.

Book Description

Book Description
Latinos are the fastest growing racial ethnic group in the United States. Despite the fact that they will soon outnumber African Americans, Latinos are often excluded from discussions of race by a binary black/white paradigm. Challenging Fronteras exposes the limitations of this paradigm, which fails to describe the complex reality of America's changing and multi-ethnic population. The editors have assembled a group of essays that resist the stereotypes that frame Americans' perceptions of race, moving beyond superficial treatments of Latinos as a monolithic group. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the diversity of Latino cultures and experiences in the United States.
While food, music, clothing, and other elements of Latino material culture have been incorporated into the mainstream, Amerian schools continue to neglect Latino history, politics, socio-economic conditions, family life, and educational experiences. At the same time that educators continue to exclude such topics from their courses, legislation like California's Proposition 187 seeks to exclude the children of Latino immigrants from the education system itself. Several of the contributors examine the immigration experiences of groups from different Latin American nations. Other contributors reflect upon how Latinos living in the United States identify themselves.
Sections cover topics such as immigration, concepts and theories of ethnicity, identity, work and family life, and political and economic restructuring. Each section contains articles about several Latin groups. Tracing the intersection of race, class, gender, ethnicity and citizenship, the contributors expose the constraints that shape the lives of Latinos and explore the possibilies ahead.
The contributors, selected from leading scholars in Latino Studies, include Patricia Zavella, Suzanne Oboler, Alejandro Portes, Clara Rodriquez, Marta Tienda, Nestor Rodriquez. and others.

Customer Reviews:
Almost there.......2007-05-18
This is still a great PM&R textbook by any standards.
Naturally people would want to compare this to the other Great PM&R classic (Braddom's PM&R Text - 3rd edition).
2 distinct areas it falls short when compared to Braddom's:
1. The Aesthetic Appeal is grossly missing especially in this age of High Tech. Sorely missing are captivating Colorful charts, boxes and most importantly Pictures !
2. Also missing an essntial e-edition: to facilitate portability and availability of the contents. (again in this age of IT and high tech, for such a classic well-referenced text, almost a must)
But Kudos still has to be given to the contents of the book, which in some areas out-did Braddom's. It included important chapters like Rehab in the International arena.
In this regards it can be viewed as a complementary text to Braddom's instead of as a complete rival.
Recommended to people referencing PM&R Information.
Good Reference Book.......2006-11-10
Overall a good reference text, though very difficult to read, and multiple contradictions between chapters.
Would recommend the new edition of Braddom which is more concise, better pictures, and overall an easier read.

Book Description
The sweetheart of Hector Balascoran Shayne's adolescence-the same one who has become a famous Mexican movie star-has disappeared into the magical reality of the U.S./Mexico Border. Her daughter hires the detective to find her and bring her home. He wanders la frontera, traveling the empty roads between Tijuana and Mexicali and Juarez. Between nostalgia and reality. He falls in and out of love, he talks with the ghost of Pancho Villa, he asks lonely questions about the dirty business of narcotraficantes, and he listens closely to the story of the whores of Zacatecas. They, like his sweetheart, seem to have disappeared forever, their absence creating chaos back home. Balascoran Shayne, who at heart is an anarchist and incurable romantic, answers his own questions with two sticks of dynamite. Only then can he say goodbye to the beloved of his youth.
The Hector Balascoran Shayne detective series are best sellers in Mexico, Latin America and Europe. In the U.S., Belascoran Shayne has a rabid and growing clan of aficionados, but to insure that the popularity of the series continues to grow, editor Bobby Byrd and translator William Verner add an Afterword for Frontera Dreams. Their essay includes a biography of the detective, a brief synopsis of the novels to date and an artist's sketch of him. The drawing portrays all the scars on his bullet-riddled body and details in which novel
Paco Ignacio Taibo II inflicted these myriad wounds on his beleaguered hero.
Customer Reviews:
"So Far from God, and So Close to the United States".......2003-03-31
"Poor Mexico" exclaimed dictator Porfirio Diaz, "so far from God and so close to the United States!" That says it all. The entire border is a huge Zone of Distortion warped by the looming proximity of the Giant to the North. I felt it as far south as Los Mochis, Durango and Chihuahua, and did not feel entirely free of it until I got to Guanajuato and Queretaro.
Poor Hector Belascoaran Shayne has been knifed, shot at, and even left for dead -- but Paco Taibo keeps bringing him back for more. In this case, it is childhood crush Natalia Smith-Corona, an actress whose daughter has reported her missing and sends the stout detective on a hallucinogenic chase among the narcotraficantes, DEA agents, ambiguous chiefs of police, 300 whores from Zacatecas, and other loonies -- the worst of whom is a right winger named Quayle (sadly, no relation to the former vice president).
FRONTERA DREAMS is not quite linear in its organization, resembling at times some of those strange Italian spy movies of the 1960s that capitalized on the James Bond craze. If you don't like the feeling of not knowing where you are going, this novel will not please you.
On the other hand, if you see it as a shaggy dog story that, as it moves rapidly from one location to the next, gives you some feeling of the strangeness of El Border, you might enjoy it as much as I have. This is my third Shayne novel, and I look forward to reading all of them, if only someone would come along and translate the first of the series (DIAS DE COMBATE) into English.
Not One of Taibo's Best.......2002-08-18
Hector Belascoaran Shayne is one of greatest characters in all of mystery fiction. The one eyed anarchist is at his very best when he is Mexico City. This is his home and he has wonderful eye for the absurdities of daily life in the world's largest city. However, problems begin when he leaves the D.F. for the frontera. Both Belascoaran Shayne and the book meander around both sides of the US-Mexico Border. The frontera is not Taibo's beat and unfortunately this is evident in the book. I would recommend this book only to die hard Taibo fans. For those new to Taibo, check out his earlier books.

Product Description
This novel portrays Carlos FuentesÂ’ best; it is aggressive, sharp, and powerful. With penetrating humor and frank narrative, the nine stories (in this novel) depict the rift that has occurred between the U.S. and Mexico in the last two hundred years. But Fuentes also gives us an insight into the force of Mexican life and culture, and how it has been able to survive in spite of the injustice and corruption in Mexico that have caused so many to seek to immigrate.

Book Description
Therapists, exercise physiologists, and physicians will find Exercise in Rehabilitation Medicine, Second Edition, a highly useful reference in designing exercise rehabilitation programs for patients with various disabling illnesses and conditions. This book provides an understanding of the basic physiological adaptations to exercise and aids health professionals in properly matching a training program with the impairment, activity, activity level, and participation goal appropriate for the patient.
Written by the most distinguished rehabilitation clinicians in the field, Exercise in Rehabilitation Medicine, Second Edition, provides a comprehensive approach to the use of exercise as a primary modality in the arsenal of rehabilitation specialists. Thoroughly updated, this new edition focuses on the basic sciences and clinical correlates affecting the use of exercise, and it includes new chapters on the use of exercise in patients with HIV/AIDS, end-stage renal disease, and cancer recovery. It also includes the following features:
Discussion of equipment and protocols used for testing the capacity of the patient, with specific reference to strength, endurance, flexibility, and balance 12 clinical chapters, each including a case study that shows how the information applies to a specific patient, indicating the practical importance of the knowledge presented More than 200 tables, illustrations, and photos to reinforce and clarify the text Subject and citation indexes, along with extensive reference lists for each chapter, making it easy to access the information and explore subjects in greater depth
In part I, the focus is on biological considerations, including physiological responses to exercise and adaptations regarding strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Only by understanding these basic facts can a health professional properly match a training program with a patient. Part II details special clinical considerations, including the principles of exercise testing and exercise prescription and examining the role of exercise in preventing chronic illness. Part III discusses the rationale and clinical importance of exercise in the rehabilitation of patients with various disabling conditions, and it addresses the factors that must be weighed when prescribing exercise for these conditions. Among the diseases discussed in these 12 chapters are diseases of the heart, circulatory system, lungs, kidneys, joints, and bones and the endocrine, immune, and neuromuscular systems. Part IV includes two chapters on special populations: the elderly and elite athletes with disabilities.
Exercise in Rehabilitation Medicine, Second Edition, combines theory with practical and clinical information, establishing both the "how" and "why" of exercise rehabilitation. Its clarity will help those with little technical expertise to follow it and put it to use, and its detail and advanced material will aid those who are experienced to significantly improve their understanding.

Book Description
In La frontera de cristal Carlos Fuentes is at his best: aggressive, sharp, powerful.
Customer Reviews:
Impressive novel about of USA-Mexico present relations.......1997-01-08
In times of NAFTA, the relations between Mexico and USA are very unstables:
indocummented migration, racialism, intercultural commnuciation, etc. are topics
very importants for them, and they're shaped in Carlos Fuentes' La frontera de cristal.
This novelist, maybe most important of today's Maxico and Latin America, give us a
nine shortstories of love, immagination, and hope about of possible mexicans and gringos
cohabitation in north and south of Rio Grande/rio Bravo for to go through the crystal frontier.
