Book Description
There’s no doubt about it—breakups suck. But in the first few hours or days or weeks that follow, there’s one important truth you need to recognize: Some things can’t and shouldn’t be fixed, especially that loser who dumped you or forced you to dump him. It’s called a breakup because it’s broken, and starting right here, right now, it’s time to dry your tears, put down that pint of ice cream, log out of his e-mail, and open this book to Chapter One–and start turning your breakup into a breakover.
From Greg Behrendt, the co-author of the smash two-million copy bestseller He’s Just Not That Into You, comes It’s Called a Breakup Because It’s Broken--the ultimate survival guide to getting over Mr. Wrong and reclaiming your inner Superfox. From how to put yourself through “he-tox,” to how to throw yourself a kick-ass pity party, Greg and his wife, Amiira, share their hilarious and helpful roadmap for getting past the heartache and back into the game. You will learn:
• Why you shouldn’t call him—and what he’s thinking when you do
• How to keep your friends and not lose your job
• How to avoid breakup pitfalls: IMing, stalking, having sex with your ex
• Reframing reality—seeing the relationship for what it was
• How to transform yourself into a hot, happening Superfox and get a jump on the better, brighter future that awaits
Complete with an essential workbook to help you put the crazy down on paper and not take it out into the world, It’s Called a Breakup Because It’s Broken is a must-have manual for finding your way back to an even more rocking you.
Customer Reviews:
Well Worth Reading.......2007-10-21
My breakup is less than one week old and I just read this cover to cover. It is a good read and helps you to think about the reality of your situation. It also has some good tips about moving forward. This is especially true for the passages that emphasize how you should not be calling your ex or having any contact with them at first really. Although, everyone knows better and tells themselves they won't call; sometimes the temptation is nearly overwhelming. The authors here drill in how detrimental that really is from an objective perspective. I wish all others going through a breakup lots of luck, since I know right now it feels like we need it. I hope to feel better soon & I hope you do too!
Destined to be one of your "breakup buddies".......2007-10-04
Reading this book after a breakup is a little like Bridget Jones taking relationship advice from the Smug Marrieds after her breakup with Daniel. But still, I didn't think the authors' writing was pedantic in any way.
The basic message of the book was, "get over him already." Filled with Q and As and basic exercises to get things out of your system, the book also offers strategies for coping effectively with getting over your breakup. Most importantly: do not call. Having recently gone through a breakup myself, I'd add another commandment to the list: don't cry over every little thing that reminds you of your ex (case in point: my ex's last name was Smith, and for three months after the relationship ended, every time I ran into someone with that last name, I burst into tears).
The book is funny and witty, and highly enjoyable, even if the authors aren't the most highly qualified to write about the subject (almost everybody could write a book about how someone or multiple people broke their heart). Many of the things the author says are completely true and blatantly obvious, but the person getting over the breakup doesn't always realize it. The book also made me realize that I'm not as heartbroken as I thought I was.
Great guide for those ready to move on after a breakup.......2007-09-28
I am a psychologist working at a college counseling center, and I have recommended this book to several of my clients who have experienced a relationship breakup. However, because the tone of this book is very lighthearted, almost irreverent, I've been selective in my recommendations. The authors--a husband and wife team who talk freely about their own past breakups--infuse plenty of humor into their work. There can be a thin line between being funny and empowering versus funny and belittling, and I do believe the authors fall well on the side of the former, but still, I'd recommend this book mainly for those who are READY to move on after a breakup but just are not sure how to do so.
The book has two main parts: "The Breakup," which centers around coming to terms with the reality that the relationship is truly over, and "The Breakover," which focuses on coping with this new reality. The chapters contain a wealth of helpful information, from personal stories by the authors to simple exercises and questionnaires to occasional recipes (I plan to try the "Crack Brownies" soon!). The second part of the book focuses on "Breakup Commandments" and contains a special chapter for men called "Dude, Get Off Her Long." On the whole, however, this book is mainly geared towards empowering women who have been dumped, with the authors frequently using endearments designed to give a much-needed self-esteem boost (including calling the reader "Superfox," "Pretty Lady," and "Hot Stuff").
Overall, the main point of this book is that the breakups are like a serious illness which is undeniably painful yet completely curable. With empathy, wisdom, and wit, the authors provide plenty of hope that you can pass through the destruction and devastation left by your broken relationship and embrace the wonderful new life waiting for you.
Funny but sad for brokenup couples.......2007-09-20
I'm not picky reading books. sometimes i read business books, and sometimes i read romance or salty novels.
I used to read serious psychological books and cooking recipe books..and so on.
I love books because through reading books i could know what i never got an experience and never done before.
The reason i say that i'm not picky reading books something is that i've read kind of simple, humorous and might be low quality but useful book for our life.
The book is just 'It's called a BREAKUP Because it's BROKEN'
Actually the author wrote this book as a kind of solution for just broken couple especially for girls. how to get over it and how to forget my ex. and what should we do after breaking up the relationship. As you know we spend so hard time after breaking up. The author as a counselor is trying to get people who just broke up encourage. But the side effect of this book is just that the breaking up relationship looks like easy to handle and solve, even subtle and simple one. Anytime we could find another partner as a girlfriend and boyfriend. just forget your ex even if you are so difficult to being alone and trying to find new one. Because of author's these statements make this book so funny and humorous.
Isn't it too much sad ? Through talking other people's sadness we could enjoy reading.
But i should recommend this book for just breaking up couples. It could help them.
Your replacement best friend.......2007-09-15
Greg and Amiira do a great job of providing sound advice and personal experience while topping it all off with great humor. Sure, not everyone is going to find the advice in this book overly astounding. For example, I think most girls know that it is probably not a good idea to keep calling your ex or secretly stalking his old hangouts. However, Greg and Amiira give the little extra nudge you need in order to see the light at the end of the tunnel and not pick up the phone instead of just knowing that you shouldn't. Plus the little extra bonus in this book is reading about all the crazy things people have done after a break-up. Reading their craziness pushes you to be even more sane and on your way to becoming a SuperFox!!
The only downside to this book for me was that I was the one that broke up with my boyfriend. Ninety percent of the time the book takes the perspective of the person dumped. It still was helpful, but just because you ended a relationship doesn't mean it hurts any less. I would have liked to see both perspectives more.
Book Description
Why does talk in families so often go in circles, leaving us tied up in knots? In this illuminating book, Deborah Tannen, the linguist and and bestselling author of
You Just Don't Understand and many other books, reveals why talking to family members is so often painful and problematic even when we're all adults. Searching for signs of acceptance and belonging, we find signs of disapproval and rejection. Why do the seeds of family love so often yield a harvest of criticism and judgment? In
I Only Say This Because I Love You, Tannen shows how important it is, in family talk, to learn to separate word meanings, or messages, from heart meanings, or metamessages — unstated but powerful meanings that come from the history of our relationships and the way things are said. Presenting real conversations from people's lives, Tannen reveals what is actually going on in family talk, including how family conversations must balance the longing for connection with the desire for control, as we struggle to be close without giving up our freedom.
This eye-opening book explains why grown women so often feel criticized by their mothers; and why mothers feel they can't open their mouths around their grown daughters; why growing up male or female, or as an older or younger sibling, results in different experiences of family that persist throughout our lives; and much, much more. By helping us to understand and redefine family talk, Tannen provides the tools to improve relationships with family members of every age.
Customer Reviews:
You Need to read this Book!.......2007-09-13
Everyone with a family should read this book. It has excellent examples and you will recognize the conversations and situations because you have heard or participated in very similar communication fiascoes.
Extremely informative.......2006-06-27
I have used the information in this book to enhance my communication and relationship skills with my family and others I work with. I believe the book is worth the time reading!
I only Say This because i Love you.......2006-03-19
This makes a mother stop and isten to herself when she is talking to her adult daughter. Why does the daughter not like to visit her? Well, in this book may be the answer, the way the mother talks to her grown daughter. The book should go both ways in helping the daughter learn how to talk to her mother, who is wanting a close relationship to her grown daughter now. This is a very good book, one that can help people grow in their communications with each other.
Interesting.......2006-03-16
I found this book to be helpful in understanding some of the language that goes on between my family, to know we are not the only ones out there with problems in relating to each other.
really really really really good. really........2003-10-27
I cannot express how much this book has helped me understand what's going on in my family. A lot of arguments in my family center around who said what, how they said it, and why they said it. And Tannen provides almost all of the tools necessary for us to even think about reconciling.
This really is an enlightening book. What it does do, is explain what goes on in a particular aspect of any family - she explains how family arguments and conversations work, why some things are said but other left unsaid, and provides some suggestions and advice for going back and fixing some of those misunderstandings. She provides a really comprehensive overview of whole family setups, organizations, and tons of possible situations.
She doesn't say "here's how to fix your problems - they shall all be solved". She can't - she's not your own psychologist. But there is so much information to work with, that for a majority of families this will definitely provide a really good and solid basis for reconciling, and even allowing family members to start talking to each other civily again.
Tannen has done tons of research, and provides many examples from all types of families throughout the whole book - grandparents, partners, families with children, families without children, cross-culture families, etc.. I do have to completely agree with another reader that the examples Tannen gives could have been plucked straight from my life. I found one line in particular that could actually explain away years of misunderstanding between two whole branches of my family, myself included. It's also a very fast read - I read it through in just a few days, and I'm a slow reader.
If anyone in your family is even remotely having difficulties talking to others in your family, you should buy this book. I can't tell you how much it's helped me already. Had to buy two more copies of the book for other family members to "borrow".

Book Description
An exciting new treasury of Jewish stories and storytellers, from ancient tales and classics re-imagined to contemporary family stories, parables, and humor
"Why were human beings created?" goes a traditional Jewish saying. "Because God loves stories." Storytelling has been part of Jewish religion and custom from earliest times and it remains a defining aspect of Jewish life. In Because God Loves Stories, folklorist Steve Zeitlin assembles the work of thirty-six Jewish storytellers, each of whom spins tales that express his or her own distinctive visions of Jewish culture. Contemporary storytellers re-interpret stories from the Talmud for modern sensibilities, the Grand Rabbi of Bluzhov tells tales of the Holocaust, beloved comedian Sam Levenson regales readers with hilarious vignettes of Jewish life in America, and much more.

Stories from all walks of American- Jewish life.......2006-04-03
The idea of the anthology is a good one, though I wished it had included more stories about 'Eretz Yisrael' which is after all the center of Jewish yearning for generations. The work focuses on American- Jewish stories and storytellers, although of course many touch upon Old World experiences. The storytellers themselves come from a variety of walks of life, some being professional storytellers, some well- known Jewish cultural figures and some being ' everyman' . The stories often have a folk quality about them, and are often entertaining, and instructive.
However the stories also point up the difference between stories which are stories in the street, anecdotal stories, and stories which are more complex literary creations. In this I think stories of the folk kind cannot possibly have the kind of aesthetic value that for instance a written story of Bashevis Singer might have.
These are stories to love!.......2005-08-30
It`s an amazing book. After I bought it I couldn`t stop reading until I was through! Amazingly funny, poetic, inspiring and touching stories, from the first one to the last one. Good source - let`s say, a sampler - of Jewish wisdom. The book resides on my bedside table now - in case I need some inspiration for good dreams...
Because we love stories..........2000-02-15
What a joy to read this anthology! In a world where the media is constantly on our nerves with the ever-going show of human misery, to read this set of stories is a therapy. It makes you laugh, it makes you wonder, it brings you closer to God and His creation, it revives a deep-rooted "jewishness" that we seldom are aware off or have simple forgotten. It makes you feel like a child savoring his favorite ice cream: when it is finished, he cries out for more!
Captures Jewish "philosophy of life" if there is one........1997-12-21
It is said that when three Jews have a discussion they will have at least four opinions, so there may not be any such thing as a Jewish outlook on, or philosophy of, life itself. But if there is, Because God Loves Stories captures its flavor. This is a collection of tales, memories, family stories, and anecdotes -- most of them short, and all of them fascinating -- that captures the tension and conflict between demanding the sweetness of the ideal world from God (who should certainly understand it the way WE do) while grudgingly, cynically, and mockingly accepting the frequent bitterness (or at least the tartness) of reality. It is a collection that shows how one can see humans as made in the image of God while still being fallible, troublesome, and even sinful, and that shows Jews loving God while being poignantly aware of the disappointments in much of His work, and letting Him know about it.
I have given copies of this book to my (Jewish) father who is as easily impressed as all Jewish parents -- and he loved it and reads the stories to friends he visits in a Jewish nursing home. They love them. I have also shared the stories with the non-Jews of a library literary discussion group to which I belong, and they have loved them. So, nu, what are you waiting for? Buy the book already. It's not like it costs so much money; the pleasure will be worth the few pennies you spend.

For All Ages and Cultures ..........2007-01-05
LOVE is an unconditional. This book illustrates the differences between like and LOVE. This is a great book to read to children of all ages. The illustrations are marvelous. Even though the choice of roles may be a little gender biased, the story still depicts and models (for parents or caregivers) the art of teaching love.
Great to make kids feel loved.......2006-03-12
Great book, easy to read and really lets your child know they are very loved and very special.
The Message is for Children of ALL AGES - young and grown alike...........2006-01-22
My favorite line in this elegant volume is when
the regally dressed Mama fox says to her little one,
"I love you any way you feel, no matter what you do."
How many of us wonder, "Will they still love me, even
though I......." fill in your blank?
How many times we PRAY the important people in
our lives will love us unconventionally and how many
times do we deny ourselves the comfort of a
"Yes, ofcourse I will love you any way... no
matter what you do"?
Read this child to the preschooler in your life
AND be sure your teen-aged children (nieces,
nephews, neighbors, passers-by) are listening
as well. Read it often.
Read it to yourself when you are feeling low -
and allow yourself to be embraced by Mama Fox.
It is a less-than-five-minute investment
in contentment, peace and growth in
unconventional love... and hopefully the message
will carry over into the hearts and souls
of the listeners.
I love you because you're you.......2005-08-30
I read this to my niece every time she sleeps over..She goes over to the book shelf and picks it out...along with a few others we read before she goes to sleep...Jessalyn is 3 years old..
Why, Mama?.......2005-01-27
My toddler loves this book. He calls it the "foxes" book. He loves to ask "why" the mama fox loves the baby fox. I think this is a must-have.

A beautiful book!.......2005-04-13
You don't have to speak Spanish to enjoy this book. The drawings are beautiful and the words on each page are really touching. My 2-year-old son loves to identify the animals in the pictures and who could argue with sentiments like "I love my mommy because she keeps me warm and safe." I would highly recommend this book to anyone! The words are all printed in Spanish and English, including the names of the animals on each page.

Clearly by an author who has no connection to God.......2007-09-27
If God is the creator and made a perfect creation then why would anyone want to keep children inside an imperfect structure and isolate them from Gods perfect temples of creation?? (for man can not build anything perfect, correct? Only God can create the perfect).
What a lousy quality book. Commercial, "Readers Digest" illustrations of a poorly "told", unsatisfying, Bible type story that was more reminiscent of some cult leaders description of himself...and why is everyone white?
I sent it back. Save yourself the trouble of sending it back and get a Thomas Locker book instead.
What a horrible story.......2007-02-26
Build a wall around the village to trap the kids in? Because you love them?!? If you love them, take them out to the forest and let them explore, with you there to protect them. Don't wall them in. I pity the children raised by parents who believe this is a good lesson.
I love Max! .......2007-02-01
This author has blessed me in so many ways. I have bought his children's books for my daughter. I hope she will be blessed by his work too.
Great Children's Book.......2005-08-21
I bought it for my child because it gives the message that you are loved for yourself.
Because I Love You.......2005-01-27
What I like about this story is that it's a wonderful story. It has realistic nature pictures and they take adventures. It has lots of happiness. They have a little bit of fear. Especially love. There's a lot of love in this story.
Book Description
A day spent with a young child at the beach is filled with many minor dramasa lost shoe, a ball that floats too far out into the water, a drippy ice-cream cone. These can be frustrating events for both child and parent, but the daddy in this book finds a way to fix each problem, lovingly and patiently. Why? Because he loves his little girl, of course! This spot-on pairing of words and images is a warm, reassuring, and humorous tribute to dads everywhere.

One of My 3yr Old's Favorites.......2007-07-20
We first checked this book out at the library, but after several times I just bought her a copy. It's a very sweet book with simple words and familiar scenes. She can basically recite it now. When her daddy is out of town she almost always chooses it as her bedtime story. Daddy approves and it's one of his favorites to read to her.
Loving and Warm.......2007-06-14
This is a wonderful book, not only for the loving ways the father interacts with his child, but also to serve as a gentle reminder to harried parents of other ways to be. Sometimes we all need to dig deeper into our souls to find yet another bit of patience for our children. This father reminds us how to turn away from those knee-jerk reactions to the normal needs of a child and continue to be loving, kind, generous, and helpful to our children. A beautiful, simple, poignant book!
What a great book!.......2006-06-21
My mom got this book for my husband right before our daughter was born... He loves it and it is exactly the way he is! The dad is so patient and understanding, and I cry every time I read it. It's such a sweet book to give a new dad!
sweet story.......2005-08-22
This good goes in to detail of the many jobs a father has. It tells that he's the one that comforts your when you have a bad dream, brings you in from the cat when you are asleep and lots more. Why does he do these things? Because of the love he had in his heart for his kids! Great father's day read!
What did you like or not like about the book?
The pictures were fun to look at. The story moved at a fast pace as well.
Would you recommend the book? Why or Why not?
Yes. Little children need to know that their fathers love them very much. This book reinforces the concept well.
