Book Description
When Ty's father, Brad, makes an emergency stop at Heartland with his truck, Amy is horrified to discover what he's transporting. Inside the trailer are seven dehydrated horses, crammed in the rank, stifling conditions. While the Heartland team works to revive the animals, Amy discovers that Brad -- who had never supported Ty's work at Heartland -- is willing to take a stand against his company management in order to prevent the return of the horses to unfit owners. As the horses slowly recover at Heartland, Amy witnesses another miraculous healing -- between Ty and his father.

Heartland.......2006-03-30
This book tells a lot about society. It is about horses that either have problems or are being abused. What does that say about people in general? It tells us some people can be cruel. Society does not help horses that have been hurt or abandoned. People should not be allowed to have pets if they dont take care of them. That is where society comes in. People should prove that they are mature or responsible to take care of a pet before they purchase it. People should be able to have pets, as long as they take care of them properly and treat them kindly.
The characters in this story are very similar to the people I know. The main character and I both like animals, expecialy horses. Amy is the main character. She helps abused horses with their problems and fears. She and I both believe that no animal should be tormented. Other characters like Ty and Nacy are like my mom and dad. Ty is like my dad becuase Ty helps around the stables and my dad is like that too. Nancy is like my mom she is kind and supports peoples ideas. My mom is very nice and she will support almost everyone's opinion. So all the characters do resemble friends and family even though they are different people.
There are a couple different themes in this book. One is that you should always treat your pets with respect, no matter how mean they are. Two, is to always support your friends. If they have an idea you should be bringing them up, not pushing them down. Last, but not least is to always help others. This is a very important one because people who need your help may need a friend as well. If you are able to help them out, you should also be able to be their friend and help them later on if they need it. So always help and be a friend to everyone!!
Healing Horses, Healing Hearts!.......2006-03-14
I really enjoyed reading A Season of Hope. I could not put the book down. Lauren Brooke is the very best author for horse books. If you like horses YOU MUST READ THEESE BOOKS or you will miss out on something so wonderful that there is no word to describe it. I really wish that there were more than twenty books in the series. A Season of Hope is about a girl named Amy and how she is faced with the horrors of animal cruelty to horses, although she could be dealing with the law Amy tries everything she can to help the horses. Amy is greatly helped by her sister Lou, her boyfriend Ty who is also a stable hand, Amy and Lou's grandpa, Lou's fiancé also the vet Scott, Joni a stable hand, and somehow Ty's father who hated horses but changed his mind after he spent time with them and then he finally understood that Ty belonged to work at Heartland. The phrase healing horses healing hearts means that in every book horses are healed and a person or people learn valuable life lessons. I love the Heartland books so much that for every book in the series I would give them all five stars, even more than that if I could. The Heartland books make me feel that I am inside the book watching it all. It seems as if I am watching television but different. My favorite part in the book would definitely be the ending but... you won't find out the ending unless you read it!

This Book is Great!.......2005-04-09
This book is one of the best heartland books and i should know. I've read them all. As a surprising twist that takes place the whole book(if you didnt read the back)Ty's dad brings a truckload of horses that were to be sold in an auction house. All the horses were in very bad condition. Three of which died. You'll have to read the book to find out the rest. And you should. This is a really great book!

A Woman's Point of View.......2006-08-01
Here's a review of this book from a (former) single-mom: WOW! This book is so on the mark. Only inspiration from the Holy Spirit can truly explain how Ms. McMenamin has been able to illustrate the experience of women who find themselves alone (in one way or another)ao accuratley. Cindi has a good grasp on scriputal principles, and so this is a book that I use for my Single Mothers' Support Group/ Bible study. I have devleoped supplemental study guides for each chapter that my group member have found to be helpful. We have truly enjoyed the book, and found it to be helpful toward the Spiritual Formation of many of the group members.
Another great book for women.......2003-02-01
Cindi has written another remarkable book. Like "Heart Hunger" her focus is on the personal loving relationship we can have with God. She also includes lots of Scripture to assure the reader that this is not "psychobabble" but her words have solid spiritual grounding.
What is new with this book is the hours Cindi has spent interviewing women who have walked alone or are walking alone. Some of the women share their answers and discoveries. Others describe what their alone-ness feels like and the questions that they have. Additionally Cindi looks hard at Deborah, Hagar, Leah and other women in the Bible to see what their lives have to tell us.
This is a practical and spiritual book about women who are alone: single parent, single woman, married to a nonbeliever, married to a believer but missing that idealic "couple worship" time, alone in a difficult trial, restless for something different, a dreamer with little or no suppot but a definite call from God for a ministry.
Cindi explores the pain, the reasons, the benefits, the growth, the messages, etc. of being alone. Things I surely had not considered.
I feel prepared for the next inevitable time I encounter a time when I feel alone by circumstances or not feeling understood by anyone. I feel prepared to help other women I know who are looking for some Christian counsel.
I was also encouraged to hear other women talk about the difficulties of being alone and knowing that I was not the only woman that felt some of these things.
Her final chapter about making "alone" time to be with God was very on the mark and a good finale!
Book Description
A Season for Hope is one of the greatest gifts to people dealing with cancer. Chaplain and author Michael S. Barry has had countless occasions to listen to the needs of cancer patients. From this understanding he has written devotions - letters of wisdom and hope saying what most doctors feel they cannot say. These letters meet the patients' deep longing to be heard and to be understood. A Season for Hope reflects both the reality of life as a cancer patient and the reality of a good and gracious God whose Word promises healing and hope for the journey.

A great read for a day to be spent by the fire.......2005-12-27
My friend gave me this book for Christmas and after my family had opened all of their presents, I sat down and began to read this book of 4 stories; 3 hours later, when I finished the book, I was glad I had gotten the book. I totally recommend this story by Carol Cox.
It is actually 4 stories together in one book. It is based on two families: The Bradleys and The Canfields.
1st Story: This is called Journey Toward Home; the main character is Judith Alder-she travels out west and meets up with the Bradleys and says at their ranch where she tries to discover what she should do next in her life.
2nd Story: This is called The Measure of a Man; this story follows Lizzie Bradley (she was also in the first story as a little girl) as a grown woman growing up and experiencing love and trying to find true love. (This story was my favorite.)
3rd Story: This story features the Canfields and is called Season of Hope; Rachel is the oldest Canfield sister and when Ike Canfield, her father, the weight of running their farm turns to her and it is up to her to try and keep the farm running and pay off soem debts her father left unpaid and take care of her younger sister Rachel. Along the way, she accepts help from one of her father's friends, and, well...just read it to find out what happens.
4th Story: This story is called Cross my Heart; this story is the final story and ends up drawing the two families together. Willie Bradley was unwilling been volunteered to take three orphaned children to their guadian after their parents have died. He, because of the children, ends up meeting Violet Canfield and they expereince many different trials together.
All of these stories are placed in the New Mexico/Arizona area; I found the characters relateable and nothing of the story seemed too far fetched-well perhaps some of what the three orphaned children did in the last story-to tell the truth, I didn't like those kids at all. But this was a very enjoyable read.

Guarded Overview of South African Economic Issues.......2006-04-01
Many conservatives believe in a myth that apartheid-era South Africa was well-managed and prosperous. In reality, when Nelson Mandela and the ANC came to power in 1994, they inherited a near-broke government and a very sick economy. Inflation was high, investment low, and growth negative. The white-owned corporate sector was risk-averse and oligopolistic. The distribution of income was the most unequal in the world, and, worst of all, the workforce had been hobbled by decades of education and job policies that had deskilled the majority black population. To create an enclave of privilege for whites, apartheid had wrecked the wider economy.
This book by Alan Hirsch, an economic advisor to President Thabo Mbeki, tells how the ANC responded to these huge challenges. Most of the news is good: the ANC adopted a market-friendly but social democratic approach to economics that restored public finances, resuscitated the economy (GDP growth is now almost 5 percent per year) and began to address the horrible social legacies of apartheid. Chapters deal with specific topics such as black economic empowerment, unemployment, trade policy, and macroeconomic stability. Technical issues are helpfully framed within the context of South African and ANC history. The writing is clear and straightforward. Anyone interested in modern South Africa should read the book -- not least white skeptics who warned that majority rule would lead to socialism, dictatorship and economic ruin.
Why did I give the book only four stars? For one thing, Hirsch isn't free to write frankly about debates inside the government or ANC, since hs still works for Mbeki. This limits the book's value as history. For the same reason, Hirsch can't own up squarely to ANC policy failures, such as the devastating growth of unemployment after 1994. This reticence is especially blatant on the subject of HIV/AIDS, which Hirsch barely mentions even though it's the biggest social and economic problem facing South Africa today. (Self-censorship at the top levels of the ANC has crippled discussion of HIV/AIDS ever since Mbeki embraced quack medical theories about the epidemic.) My final complaint is stylistic: Hirsch's narrative occasionally lapses into tedious summaries of research papers and policy documents, as if he went on automatic pilot while writing.
But these are quibbles rather than serious criticisms. Hirsch has written an intelligent and well-informed book, one that punctures myths on both the left (that the ANC "sold out" the revolution) and the right (that the ANC is extremist and anti-business). It makes a very constructive contribution to the public debate in South Africa, and deserves to be widely read and pondered.

Don't skip this book.......2007-03-29
Jon Courson is an excellent Bible Teacher and author. I have heard many, many of his teachings. He wears his heart on his sleeve. I have read this book and it is excellent. I totally agree with the POSITIVE comments left about the book.
good not evil, a future and a hope.......2006-08-10
I have enjoy Jon's teaching style. He is always pointing to Jesus as the reason for our hope, inspite of all the confusing, hard, somtimes horrific trials we go through here. He doesn't come from a simplistic, 'smile God loves you' christianese place. He writes from the heart of a man who has experienced grief, anger and doubt, coming to the place of excepting and receiving the "peace that passes understanding" and trusting in the truth and promises of God's word. Jon's teaching style has taught me to see how God's word applies in every situation, big and small. In my everyday life, the small picky things seem to get to me the most. So applying God's word and truth in the small things, builds me up to face whatever may come. Life is hard, but God is the steadfast, faithful one, coming alongside me through it all. I have given this book to so many people. It is easy to read, short chapters packed with truth and life. The last chapter is Jon's personal journey of grief. I appriciate his being willing to share this with the reader. We must always hold out the hope to a world that is hopeless. Thanks Jon!
Skip this book.......2006-05-15
This book was supposed to be about how religion and faith in god will help you endure tribulations. But sadly it fails.
The author's writing style of continually referring to the readers as "Hey Gang" or "Mates" is very annoying. Examples of his personal tribulations he uses are, of breaking his sandal as he was walking in Palm Springs, or a parishioner saying to him, " I hate you" were very superficial and sallow. Maybe for people in Palm Springs or on the Pacific Ocean coast these are major tribulations, but for the rest of us in the heartland, it is everyday living.
If you want a really good book about enduring overwhelming personal tribulations, I would suggest skipping this book and reading "Left to Tell" : Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust, by Immaculee Ilibagiza. This book will touch your heart and have tears rolling down your cheeks.

Teachers, here is a gem to assign!.......2002-04-01
I have used this powerful book in my college class on African politics, and found it a great way to get my (female) students in the U.S. engaged in what might seem to them otherwise to be a very distant topic. I think it could also be used for advanced high school classes, or for other college classes on gender or national self-determination. Ms. Tesfagiorgis has given us an eloquent narrative of not just Eritrea's struggle, but of the strength of which human beings are capable in the most difficult of circumstances. My only criticism is that the proofreading by the editor could have been more careful; this is certainly not the fault of the author.
Too predictable.......2001-01-10
Although I'm very interested in Eritrea, I found this book a duty rather than a pleasure. That's probably just a personal preference. I found the author a bit predictable and didn't find myself caring enough about her, despite her situation.
A warm and human story emerges from such painful events........1999-08-28
Throughout this beautifully written book is woven the heart-wrenching story of a nation and a people who have struggled for decades in order to 'breath the air of freedom'. A nation that has sacrificed its precious daughters and sons in order to have the right to self-determination. Abeba Tesfagiorgis includes in her book her story of imprisionment, having to allow her teenage children to make their decisions as strong Eritrean women despite her breaking heart upon having to come to terms with their mortality and then becoming a refugee with her two younger daughters and her husband. While reading this, I was also able to get an invaluable glimpse of the personal stories of various Eritrean women who came from differnt socio-economic backgrounds, different age groups, different religions and different parts of Eritrea. Like most people who have read this book, I couldn't stop the tears from falling and my heart from aching for the personal stories within the story of this small nation. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to get a glimple of the personal side of the Eritrean story and the triumph of the human spirit.
Adapted from a review by Tom Keneally/back cover.......1998-09-23
Review: A Painful Season and A Stubborn Hope is a record of Abeba Tesfagiorgis1 experience at the hands of the Ethiopians in Asmara and the oddyssey which follows her escape, giving us a picture of how thoroughly the forces, first he Emperor, and then the Stalinist dictator Mengistu, alienated the Eritrean people. Abeba1s tale will stand for a long time as a remarkable story of an Eritrean experience and of the forces which created an Eritrean diaspora. It will astound, elevate and ennoble all who read it. (excerpted from a review by Tom Keneally, award-winning novelist of To Asmara and Schindler1s List.)

Fantastic resource.......2006-01-24
I pastor an emerging church and I found it difficult to find many good resources for Advent. The prayers and liturgies in this book were really well written and easily adaptable. We ended up using a lot of their material and adding elements from our own community. In comparison to most of the other resources I found, this one was by far the best.
