5 out of 5 stars Teach Our Students How to Fish.......2007-07-30

As a PhD student teaching global strategy and international business, I like this book, not only for its comprehensive theoretical framework, but also for its openness for a series of debates on globalization. The theoretical framework can help students analyze the complex global business environment. More importantly, a series of debates can open their eyes, and can help them build more skills to deal with challenges in a globalizing world (think about the current buzz on offshoring and outsourcing).

Many textbooks attempted to teach students how to arrive at "correct" answers. They just tell students what is already known, and do not describe the sorts of problems that the professional may be asked to solve and the variety of techniques available for their solution. This textbook deviates from the rest of pack, because the author tries to integrate many new fronts (and yes, even debates!) in the academic and practitioner world (see the long list of references) and cultivates a "global mental set" based on his rich experience in many countries. What is most refreshing is that the author does not give a single answer or simple evaluation for many questions, but provides many possible approaches to widen the reader's mindset. In fact, every chapter has a beefy section devoted to "Debates and Extensions," with no given conclusions.

Even vivid business cases will fade quickly and be forgotten in this dramatically changing world. So a set of "divergent thinking skills" will play a more important role in helping students develop long-term capabilities in their career success. Through this book, students will learn how to recognize and evaluate many problems to which no unequivocal solution has yet been given, find an arsenal of techniques (industry-based view, resource-based view, and institution-based view) for approaching these problems, and develop "global mental sets" to judge the relevance of these techniques and to evaluate the possible solutions.

The ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi once said: "Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day; but teach him how to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime." Truly, this exciting book may teach our students how to fish!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for International Business/Strategy class.......2007-03-07

As a professor, I have used several books for International Business classes and I have to say there are Global Business books that should have been titled as International Politics or American Business. This book has a good balance between country analyses such as EU regulation, privatization in emerging economies, and company perspectives such as entering into foreign countries, creating synergy between divisions. The cases cover companies from a lot of countries; they provide enough information to complement the chapters but are not too long so that it's easy to read through. My students and I enjoyed this book very much!

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this textbook.......2006-12-25

I'm presently a student studying International Business and Marketing at a local university. This review is based on the copyright 2006 edition.

The real-world examples are extremely out of date for a global business book. For example, the interactive case 1.1 states 2000 annual report figures for GN Netcom. Another example, mentioning Yahoo! back in 2001. We all know how this competitive marketplace has changed dramatically over the past few years, and in fact changes every 6 months. When I am paying $113 for a textbook that publishers push out a new edition every year or two, I expect my money to go towards updates in the examples that are used. I realize that strategic principles don't change and can be applied towards any case in time- but this author charges a premium on a book that should be at least half the price.

Second, the structure and layout of this book is horrible. It does not break out the key points or core concepts from this rather blandly written book. The end of chapter questions are not intuitive enough, and lack the depth that a textbook should require. There is also not enough use of diagrams to illustrate the points in the text.

Third, this book is printed in black and white- another cost savings that should not justify the high price. It reminds me of reading textbooks from 15 years ago. This book will definitely be sold back at the end of the class.

So, if you are a teacher- please seriously evaluate this book before you require students to purchase it. I'm fortunate that I am taking another strategy class and there is enough overlap that I can just skim over Global Strategy by Mike Peng to fill in the gaps that I miss in the other book. A far better recommendation- Crafting and Executing Strategy by Arthur Thomson Jr., etc. Fellow students, I feel your pain if you have to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very engaging book.......2005-04-26

This is by far the best written business textbook I read in college. The book offers a very wide variety of real-world examples of the different strategies and actions explained in the book. These examples span all kinds of companies, from large MNE's to small businesses based in developing nations. The text is written very straightforward and the book seems to flow well from chapter to chapter. I was lucky to have Mike Peng as my professor in international business, because he devoted as much attention to his students as he did to his textbook.

2 out of 5 stars bad feedback.......2007-10-14

If you're using a Mac. Don't bother with this book unless you know ColdFusion well. Chapter 17 and onwards are dependent on setting ColdFusion up. The book has no instruction in the book for Mac setup at all (it was said the Mac version wasn't ready at the time. Reasonable). Looked up the errata pages found nothing either. I searched the web a little, and was able to set it up, but couldn't get it to start correctly.

I then wrote to the publisher to ask for the instruction. They were quick to respond, but they don't have the answer. They had to ask the author. After more than a month and several emails. Nothing ever came about, which render this book useless to me.

From the 17 chapters I was able to put to use. The lessons themselves are not bad, but not great. Some issues were never clear. Maybe they will be mentioned at the later chapters, but I guess I'll never find out.

So, if you're using Windows, maybe, this book can work for you. But don't expect anything from the author if you ever decide to ask questions.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the best book for beginners..........2007-08-04

I've just purchased this book and started reading it. What I've seen is that the book is divided into lessons, and each lesson has different exercises. You can follow the lessons as you were at class, with a very good learning curve. So, if you want to have a solid base on this technology, you need a lot of time to do all the examples and exercises but, when you finish the book, you KNOW Flex 2.

If you're initiated and need a reference guide, don't buy this book. In other case, this is maybe the best book for learning Flex 2 with a training way.

(Sorry for my English, I am Spanish and I've tried to write the best I could)

4 out of 5 stars GREAT book!.......2007-07-29

I wasn't too convinced about this book @ the beginning. It really is perfect for any beginners, and those seeking to get familiar w/Flex. I've been designing/coding in Flash for almost a decade now, and this book sure made the transition allot easier. The only reason I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is because the examples are all related, so if you're into building up the same example as you progress thru the book, this is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Flex 2.0 Training from the Source.......2007-07-15

Invested way more time in this book than I thought I would, ... received way more value that I predicted I would.

After quite a few weeks of trying to find time to finish up the last couple of chapters in this book I am now just finding time to write a review that I thought would be completed way before now. Between the full-time job and other projects, it has been difficult to wrap this one up ... but I am glad that I did. Just in time for the v3.0.

About the Authors: At first glance of the Bios section you will know that the authors of this book are way more than qualified. Jeff Tapper was on the MAX conference stage last year and I have personally attended the Adobe Authorized Flex Train the Trainer event with Matt Boles. (excellent instructor and technical expert to say the least) The other authors I have not met but they have well recognized names in the industry.

This book is 581 pages and consists of 25 task driven chapters that walk you through an entire project from start to finish. (The Flex Grocer) It follows the traditional "Macromedia Training from the Source" format and is very well written. The TFS book series has always been a personal favorite of mine and they are typically tightly coded with consistent quality. It makes me very unhappy to imagine that the TFS books will cease to exist or even more frightfully be replaced by the Classroom in a Book series. We'll see what happens?

The book is almost error free and there is a site that the authors have published that references any errata. The book eases you into working with simple XML data structures and controls and moves you toward FDS and also includes data management with CFCs. There is a nice introduction to the value object pattern as well as ActionScript if you may be new to either of these topics. You will probably need a supplemental book if you are not familiar with ActionScript.

I had already attended the five day Flex Train the Trainer session before I started on this book and my goal of working through this book was to make sure that everything started to sink in within a reasonable time frame after attending the class. Some of the concepts or items that I found to be of high value included a refresher on event flow and event bubbling, formatters and validators, and the history manager. Lesson 18 was my first introduction to charting data in Flex and as you probably would guess, Flex makes this a cakewalk.

No doubt this book is a FIVE STAR. I am sure that the authors have plans of updating it for Flex 3.0.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent step by step but exhausting to follow........2007-06-26

This book does a great job at providing carefully checked step by step exercises. On that level it is 5 stars. I am on chapter 8 and found no errors and I type in the code examples. However I did find unexpected results - mentioned later. There is a lot of meticulous checking to be sure the progression of the examples are correct.

The content also shows a professional developer approach to applying the technology. This does not appear to be a book written from another language's perspective such as an Actionscript programmer trying to write a Flex book. The author is focused on Flex and exposing the functionality in how you best would apply it. So I would say the content is top notch, but again I am the student and this is my professional developer gut experience making the call.

This book uses one grocery store shopping cart example all the way through. This is boring as heck to see that example chapter after chapter. Now the book does provide starting files for each chapter in case you messed up. However the authors were forced to add more and more to support the development of the application. This resulted in situations such as chapter 7 that went way overboard to complete the progression of the application to the end. Rather than focusing efforts on specifics of Flex you were repeating work to support the app. You would say enough already. Chapter 7 took me 3 hours to complete as it predicts in the beginning. It could have been writted for 1 hour and covered the lesson points about components and provided a larger variety of examples.

You also are doing things to support the progression of the application that later you undo for changing architecture. This makes understanding the application more difficult.

Despite the effort to provide start files at the beginning of each lesson, there are intermediate exercise steps with testing points within the lessons. There are no files to support you if you error or if there are errors in the exercise steps. One I came across is Lesson 8. The first "Displaying the Categories Using a HorizontalList and ItemRender" did not work for me. This prevented me from starting the next section in the lesson. I went over and over the steps. Stuck for 1 hour I finally deleted all the project files and started over and it worked. Would have been nice to have samples of what I should have had at the end of that segment, so I will not know what went wrong.

I went to the site for the book to see if there was an errata. There was not and there is no place to provide feedback for this type of item. Hey book companies (live errata like live docs moderated) increases quality of your technical products.

The book is not a sit down and read as some of the exercise steps can be as many as 20 or more. There is good annotation for the steps but not enough to read very long without becoming fully lost. I would say you cannot read any of the lessons (after the first few) all the way through and understand them without doing them and practicing.

I would not recommend using the Flex SDK to try to absorb this book. You really need Flexbuilder to be productive in following the book. The exercises can be done with just the SDK, just be prepared for a longer work period.

I see comments that the book is for advanced and then for beginners. You do have to have programming experience to follow the book.

I am an advanced Flash AS2 and now AS 3 developer. I wanted to get the gist of Flex for back end AS apps. It has been difficult with this book and I would say I am lost in the example most of the time. I have done the Quick Starts at the Adobe site which do have smaller simpler to follow exercises before I ventured into this book.

Bottom line, this is a great step by step book the shows off Flex features for building a shopping cart application. It covers a wide range of Flex features. It is error checked and provides useful commentary in the steps.

The exercises are way too long to keep focus if you follow along. There is no variety so boooooring.

Book Description

In this world you’re surrounded by sexual images that open the door to temptation. They’re everywhere–on TV, billboards, magazines, music, the internet–and so easy to access that it sometimes feels impossible to escape their clutches. Yet God expects his children to be sexually pure. So how can you survive the relentless battle against temptation? Here’s powerful ammunition.

Steve Arterburn and Fred Stoeker, the authors of the hard-hitting best-seller Every Man’s Battle, now focus on the temptations young single Christian men like you face every day–and they offer workable, biblical strategies for achieving sexual purity.

The authors examine the standard of Ephesians 5:3–“there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality”–in a positive and sensitive light. And they explain how an authentic, vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ is the key to victory over temptation. Every Young Man’s Battle will show you how to train your eyes and your mind, how to clean up your thought life, and how to develop a realistic battle plan for remaining pure in today’s sexually soaked culture. As a result, you’ll experience hope–real hope–for living a strong, pure life God’s way

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-08-13

I recommend this book to any young man who may be struggling with sexual purity.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, I thought one thing was missing, things parents should know about the book.......2007-08-07

I think this book has a lot of wise advice that in my experience only very few young men don't badly need to hear. The thing that I thought was lacking was an explanation of how the rules set forth in the book must be followed in a response to ones relationship with Christ. Many young men could misunderstand the importance of this and only focus on the rules proposed in the book. This might cause them to focus on doing works alone and become very law/works oriented, striving to fulfill the "laws" in their power. Hopefully we all know the danger of that. The law kills... Also parents thinking of getting this book for younger young men, should know that sexual examples are made in the book that might put thoughts in a young mans mind. If you don't want your son being exposed to sexual examples that are given in this book eg. oral sex, "getting under a bras", (used as instructive tools in the book) then you will have to censor it.

5 out of 5 stars The Book With Straight-forward Answers.......2007-07-11

As a 24-year-old single man, I debated between getting this book and getting the other one ("Every Man's Battle"). I went with this one because it is geared more toward young single (non-married) men. This book discusses the temptations that every young man battles every day. The authors pull out all the stops to let young men know that there are temptations out there and they give detailed, thoughtful, biblical instruction on how to minimize their impact. This book was difficult to set down, with biblical quotations and stories from the authors' lives. Their candor and non-judgemental views can help any young man who is fighting sexual temptation.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy straight forward guild to discuss what all young men are facing........2007-07-06

The world is conning young people into believing that indulging all sexual desires will bring the ultimate happiness. This author is an expert in dealing with the 'cost' of sexual addiction and it's victims. (See his book EVERY MAN'S BATTLE).
In this "young man's version" of the book he is able to take his expertise and put it in a language and format that is easily understood by young people. I feel this book is a great piece of armor for my son. He is first affirmed that he is "normal" in this struggle and then given some practical suggestions for dealing with it in a healthy manner. The book addresses healthy and appropriate attitudes towards girls and women. It is a major tool in helping him to have a wonderfully fullfilling sexual life later in it's God given context: marriage. The language is frank, but not crude. The book is based on healthy biblical principles without being too "preachy".

Because our children are being bombarded with unhealthy sexual messages on a daily basis I think it is critical that this type of book be given to a young man early in puberty. The book provides a great foundation for parents to build upon and an opportunity for future conversations.

5 out of 5 stars Great advice for software developers.......2007-06-29

If your company has a web site, there are many people waiting to attack it and break into it.

In How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services, authors Mike Andrews and James Whittaker detail the myriad Web software exploits that attackers will attempt to carry out. The tools and techniques that can be used to fight against them are also detailed.

The book also includes a companion CD that contains all of the source code referenced in the book in addition to a number of testing tools. The authors include software code from an insecure Web site, which helps the reader get a real-world feel for the topics involved.

The authors conclude with a look at the last 50 years of software defects, showing that developers are not learning from the mistakes.

The authors are of the opinion that software quality is no better today than it was decades ago. And in some cases, it is worse.

The book helps drive home the importance of having developers think about writing secure code and testing it for flaws. It is a recommended read for IT professionals.

2 out of 5 stars Short on content with too much padding.......2007-05-18

I was disappointed in this book. The actual content was pretty thin, and not very well written. Chapter 1 is a complete waste of time, and actually spends pages explaining what client/server means, what the Web is, and other things that are patently obvious to the supposed audience for this material. I found myself turning to the front to see if this book was written in 1997! You then get nine fairly short chapters with instructions on how to hack a website, more or less; followed by 50 pages of useless padding in the appendices including: an unrelated article co-authored by Whittaker for the IEEE, a detailed list of all the bugs present in their "sample application," and then descriptions of their recommended tools, all of which can easily be found on the Web without paying $22 for this book.

As another reviewer mentioned, there are many typos and other problems like incorrect illustrations, making the reader wonder if Addison-Wesley even employs a copy editor. Furthermore, I felt this book was inaccurately named and described. It's really more about rudimentary hacking and protecting your web application against hackers than web quality or web testing. A beginning web developer might do well to read this as a primer on how to create sites and applications with basic security, but as an experienced tester it was of limited use to me.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-04-13

I've been programming for over 10 years and thought that I had encountered it all. Uh ya, I was wrong. I'm amazed that a person can work with something for so long and yet still miss simple things like URL jumping. This is a great 32,000 foot view of web security (not a how to hack book) and covers what you should know if you are a web developer. Even if you alredy "know it all" this is a great read and excellent reference for creating check lists on projects and threats they may be succeptable to.

5 out of 5 stars Fast international delivery.......2007-03-15

It was a good experience to purchase from Amazon and getting them delivered in India at my door-step. Order reached me ontime and is in good condition.

Thanks,

5 out of 5 stars Very informative. If you develop web software it's a must-read.......2006-08-04

I recently finished reading How to Break Web Software: Functional and Security Testing of Web Applications and Web Services by Mike Andrews and James A. Whittaker. I, like many of you, develop web software for a living. I've always taken security seriously and occasionally sneered when I ran across examples of common mistakes. Having said that, this book was an eye opener for me.

The book covers common exploits such as bypassing input validation, SQL injection, and denial of service. There were also several types of attacks I hadn't really considered before. I won't list them here because someone would undoubtedly say, "I can't believe he didn't know about that one!" The authors cover 24 different types of attacks in all. The book also includes coverage of web privacy issues and security related to web services.

Finally, as icing on the cake, a CD is included that contains many tools that will find permanent spots in your arsenal. There are tools to do things like scan web servers for common exploits, mirror sites for local analysis, and check SSL cipher strengths. My favorites are the local proxies that will allow you to view and modify posts as they travel from the client and the server. I always knew I could do this, but didn't know how easy it is. The CD also contains the source code of an example site that includes many flaws for you to practice.

This book is written for software professionals to help them put the hackers out of business. So, it necessarily includes hacker techniques. If you develop or test web software, you should read this book before the hackers do. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide.......2007-10-16

This was an excellent guide. The pictures were vibrant, the facts entertaining. This guide is good if you want to learn about the parks/rides/entertainment. It's not a commando scheduler.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on rides.......2007-10-03

This book will give you the best idea on what to expect from a ride. I combine it with the WDWR Econoguide and it was the best mix. I had borrowed about 8 guides from the library and these two are the best.

5 out of 5 stars Walt Disney World Book.......2007-10-01

The book I purchased, The Complete Walt Disney World, was extremely helpful in our recent trip to Disney World. It described each ride and show with a little history included.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, but..........2007-09-28

This is a nice book, with lots of colorful photos, and my eight-year-old daughter enjoys paging through it. But honestly, the Unofficial Guide is far more comprehensive and truly the only book you'll need.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best WDW books on the market!.......2007-09-19

Loved the book! It's a great read straight through or specific selections. Really get the "behind-the-scenes" info on the park attractions. It's perfect for any Disney enthusiast. It's not the best book for PLANNING a vacation to WDW but it wasn't designed to be that kind of book.

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

Book Description

Learn to build and deploy dynamic Web applications that interact with a powerful database. Readers with two prior programming courses will learn to get the most out of Visual Studio .NET, Oracle9i and Microsoft Access 2002. Expanded from 9 to 11 chapters, this text also provides background on subjects such as HTML, client-side scripting and relational databases. Readers set up their own personal Web site using a Microsoft Web Server to illustrate Web site creation and administration principles. Multiple running case studies put the lessons being learned into real world context.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good for VB.NET developers.......2005-12-22

I thought the book was excellent. The step-by-step instructions were clear and, more importantly, worked as stated in the book. More experienced people may find this book too elementary, however, it is good for someone fairly new to VB.NET and database access, and to the concept of client/server Web environments.

If you do all of the tutorial exercises throughout a chapter, the "Hands-On" Projects at the end of the chapter are really no-brainers. They really are just a reiteration of the tutorials. I would have wanted them to have something a little more challenging.

Pay close attention to the operating system, and other software and system requirements at the start of the book. You need particular versions of operating systems on your PC, in order for Visual Studios.NET to work with Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS). The Visual Studios.NET CD at the back of the book has only a 60-day trial version. It pays to take this course via a local college, so you can get operating system upgrade and non-expiring versions of Visual Studios.NET at student prices.

3 out of 5 stars Not on par with other books in the series.......2005-11-25

The Web Warrior series is an excellent set of self-learning books, or (as I use them) for online courses. However, this book is just not up to snuff. Topics are mismanaged, scattered throughout chapters that have little to do with the subjects. After Chapter 3, where you learn some Javascript, comes a twenty page section on how to use the debugger- in Chapter 4. Gee, thanks. Also in Chapter 4 is writing cookies and opening new windows.
The review questions and assignments at chapter's end are similarly disorganized. Chapter 3, Hands-On Assignment 1 requires that you return a value from a dropdown menu. After frustrating hours I discovered that you can't guarantee a returned value if you don't preselect an option. This is explained for the first time in Chapter 4. Wonderful. My homework is hell, requiring me to predict what will come in a later chapter. The questions are often vague at best, for example asking what value you can expect an error checking script to return, and neglecting to inform poor reader whether the input is in error. (pg 251, question 2)
In all, I'd have to say that this book, while packed with information and with excellent practice exercises, suffers from a terminal lack of organization. I have to wonder whether it was rushed to market without proper editing. There are better books out there; there must be.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!.......2004-07-12

This is an excellent book. I'm in the middle of a web enabled database project at work and this book is a godsend. Especially for me because I am new to ASP.NET and VB.NET. This book is geared for someone with no web-programming experience. But if you study this book you WILL be able to set up your machine as a web-server and you WILL have the capability of creating dynamic, data-driven web-sites. It could've covered Web-Services or XML more but I don't care. Its concise and very well organized. Unlike this revew :) The CD has a lot of good material on it too. (Note that the code in this book is all VB.NET, which may scare C# people away, but it shouldn't) Five stars for this one.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Alex V. Mandel.......2004-02-29

I am interested in Amelia Earhart and her disappearance mystery for 21 years. I have read this book and my impression is very positive.
During decades there were a lot of books, articles etc. written about this subject (Earhart's disappearance), but alas too frequently they were overflooded by rumors, baseless guesses, stretches and speculations without any firm factual support.
The Mike Campbell's book is principally different. It is based on firm first-hand evidence from many independent sources, whose credibility gives no food for doubts - there are former US Soldiers, who really were on the place of events and saw what they saw.
The book is free of guesses and speculations - authors doesn't builds some "versions" or "theories" but just presents the data obtained by them during many years from many independent sources, with extensive details, and the book includes many written reports and official documents.
As result the book gives a very complete and convincing picture about What Happened with Amelia Earhart. The book is written with clear accuracy and respect to facts and to the "subject" of the book - the great heroine of 20th century and US history, whose name alas was already too frequently used for unfair speculations of any sorts. Mike Campbell's book makes an extremely good job for to correct this sad error.
I would highly recommend this book for anybody interested in this great mystery.

Book Description

Eight months after George W. Bush proclaimed major combat in Iraq over in 2003, author Mike Tucker found himself right in the thick of it--dirty, profane, violent, lethal, and daily major combat--with some of America’s most highly trained and accomplished soldiers.

Among Warriors in Iraq is a street-level view of the struggles of maintaining control in the anarchy that pervaded Iraq after Coalition forces declared victory. Tucker journeyed--and fought--with Special Forces groups in both Mosul and Fallujah, cities unconvinced the war was over, and willing to do anything to ensure that the struggle would continue.

Here is his frank and adrenaline-soaked account, seen through the resilient eyes of the soldiers willing to pay the ultimate price for victory.

Eight months after George W. Bush proclaimed major combat in Iraq over in 2003, author Mike Tucker found himself right in the thick of it - dirty, profane, violent, lethal, and daily major combat - with some of America's most highly trained and accomplished soldiers.
Among Warriors in Iraq is a street-level view of the struggles of maintaining control in the anarchy that pervaded Iraq after Coalition forces declared victory. Mike Tucker is a Marine infantry veteran with a Special Operations background, and an author. He broke Burmese Army lines in 2002 with Karen guerrillas, and has investigated war crimes in Burma and northern Iraq. In 2003, he journeyed throughout Iraqi Kurdistan, interviewing Kurds from all walks of life. Later, he joined U.S. Army snipers, scouts, light infantry, paratroopers, and Special Forces commandos for nineteen weeks on raids and patrols in northern and western Iraq. He remained in Iraq for fourteen months.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Tough read........2007-09-24

For some reason, contrary to most embedded writers, this author makes himself the most important character to the story. According to him, he goes around the battlefield assigning nickknames to soldiers and telling his war stories to them. He talks way too much for someone who was lucky to get permission to observe. This book was just plane corny. Sorry I have to be so rough, but I'm angry for wasting my money. Don't waste yours unless you want to read a book full of corny quotes normally reserved for b-rated war flicks.

4 out of 5 stars The guy at least tried..........2007-09-01

Mike Tucker was just this goofy correspondent dude who shows up right before we get on the helicopters to raid outside Mosul for a big pile of mortar rounds. He misspelled my platoon leader's name, but hey, he was the only guy we had taking notes on that mission. At least somebody noticed I was doing a good job on the mine detector even if it was my second day. Still, I didn't even know I was in this book until two years after it came out. Reading the 3/502 portions, I know most everyone in it, and everyone's at least recognizable if you look at it though the same glasses Mike looks at the world with.

1 out of 5 stars A sleeper.......2007-08-29

For those wanting to find stories of warriors this one has very few in it. Tucker can't help including every mundane detail about the soldiers he encounters as they are in camp or standing around, but has very litle to say about combat. Some of the dialogues he includes verbatim (esp. those of three Ohio reservists) read like an Ayn Rand novel--monotonous! The book has no rhyme or reason, and his insistance on giving every soldier he meets a nickname is uncalled for, confusing, and should have been edited out.

2 out of 5 stars Wacky writing at its best........2007-08-18

In dedication to Mike "The Duck" Tucker, more formally know as "Hero of the Dunderheads", I would like to offer this humble review. As the sunlight glinted off the gun barrell black of the M-4, Harvana Tiger looked at the sunlight and wondered what it is like for authors writing war stories as romance novels. Hero of the Dunderheads gets his friends to write great reviews comparing their friend to Hemingway. Hmmn says this reviewer as he scans the reviews on Amazon. Is this a great story or what?

As the author has proved, anybody can be a great author. I only read one hundred pages and wondered why I was reading what I was reading. I might finish this book, and I might not as I wonder about Hero of the Dunderheads. Good thing the author is in Malaysia. He should try writing in Malay, it might improve his ability.

OK, for those who have not read this fine book, look elsewhere such as Bing West's fine book about Fallujah. I don't think this book is written well enough to satisfy anyone.

5 out of 5 stars "Radio Free Wisconsin" Sgt Lybert Climb to Glory.......2007-05-07

For those who have read, reviewed or may read this book I would like to draw your attention to "Radio Free Wisconsin" Sgt Lybert. Dispute the quality of the book as any of you have free will to do, after all that's part of what our Soldiers sacrfice, provide you, your right to free speech.

I just want it noted along with all these reviews that after a year in Iraq "Radio Free Wisconsin" aka SGT Lybert most importantly my son, was promoted. SSG Patrick Lee Lybert of 3-71 Cav 10th MTN DIV (Recon)deployed to Afghanistan and was KIA 21 June 2006 near Gowardesh, Afghanistan. In a battle facing the enemy as they attacked, not giving one inch I am told by the soldier's he was in front of. My son, an American Hero sacrficed his life for America in a mountain valley far from my arms somewhere in Afghanistan.

I have both my son's copy of this book and the one Mike Tucker signed and gifted through my son to me. Sheepishly gifted I might add because he knew Mom doesn't like course language (although Mom has been known to let a bit fly under extreme stress).

Many of those men written about in this book, with those nicknames some of you poke fun at came from across country at their own expense, without my prior knowledge or personal request to bear my son to his resting place. " No one will touch Patrick but us" one of those men told me. The detail already here graciously yielded the carrying of my son to his Brothers in Arms, the Warriors he served with in Iraq.

Belittle their nicknames if you will, but realize the greatness of what they sacrifice for your freedoms. Acknowledge and take note that behind the title Soldier these men have mothers, fathers, siblings, wifes, family and friends. That my son, once my little boy with bright sparkling blue eyes, his smile wide and warm, a heart so big he had time for anyone is forever gone from me. All I have left are memories, fishing poles, hunting equipment, his ice shack ,his truck, my broken heart and empty arms. I want you to know he was real, warm, I love and I miss him. I want you to know he leaves behind parents, fiancee, brothers, the one younger brother has special needs and our soldier intended to become caretaker guardian for when I no longer could. What happens now? I have not yet found the answer.

Think of our shattered family and the many other families of the fallen when you read about our soldiers. This is not a game. Their sacrifices, the risks they face are real.

Thank you Mike Tucker for giving me an insight (even if there are cuss words but he apologized for them :)). You wrote in my book "To SGT Lybert's Mom, Whose son is brave, tough and smart. Long life and blue skies." One of the last photos taken of my son SSG Patrick Lee Lybert is of him standing a top a mountain in Afghanistan with nothing but blue skies behind him. Blue skies as blue as his eyes.
