required reading.......2007-07-21
this book should be required reading for all kids in jr. high school. Judge Judy has an uncanny ability to glean the truth out of a pile of b.s.!
Eyeopening to say the least!.......2007-07-20
If you've ever wondered what goes on in a family court in the City of New York, here's your chance to see it from the eyes of the judge. When you see Judge Judy on tv, I believe you're seeing a lighter side to her. After reading this book, you'll realize that she has had to rule on the most heart breaking of cases, only to have the social service administration or the parole system undercut what she determined to be the right decision.
Judge Judy has chutzpah!.......2007-01-28
Judge Judy doesn't mince words! I really liked her frankness in this book. It's a shame that some of her ideas are not tried in our justice system. She has spent a lifetime seeing things that many of us could never even imagine. I really enjoyed her honesty!

CHEERING FOR JUDGE JUDY!! .......2006-10-26
This book made me want to cheer out loud!! Judge Judy points out, as so many in society do, that there is a lack of responisbility out there. So many people in our county refuse to take responsibility for their own stupid mistakes and the rest of us pay for it. There is too much reliance on people who live by the law and live their lives responsibly.
I did feel rather sad to realize though, that she is just ONE judge who takes action in her own little corner of America. If more people thought like her, and followed her actions on getting tough with the deadbeats of the nation, this country would not have the severe problems it has. I wish more people in a position of power could see things how she sees it.

He Speaks to Me speaks directly to the need to develop a richer prayer life and deeper, more intimate relationship with God, and to learn how to comfortably share their experience of God with others. Very well timed, given the trends.

Biblically Sound?.......2007-08-14
I appreciate the author's desire to bring readers closer to God and I don't for a moment wish to challenge her faith in Christ, but the premise of her book is theologically questionable.
For example, Samuel wasn't even a believer when God spoke to him, so why is he a model for how Christians can learn to hear God's voice? (Indeed, the Biblical text specifically says Samuel "did not yet know God" in 3:7.) More to the point, where is it ever taught in Scripture that 1) it's normative for Christians to get subjective, personal messages from God, or 2) that we need to cultivate a discipline of hearing God's voice outside of Scripture itself?
Here's a question: Does God try? That is, should we assume he is trying to speak to us but can't get through because we aren't spiritually in tune enough to hear Him?
If God has to try at anything, He's not sovereign. And if he's speaking, but making it difficult for us to hear, He's cruel. No, when God wants to communicate personally to humans--believers or non-believers--He does so in unmistakably clear terms. No guesswork involved. Thus, no need to develop an ability to hear His voice.
One more problem. If we truly think God is speaking to us through various "promptings" and "leadings," it follows these alleged words from God are on par with Scripture and carry the same authority. After all, God's word is God's word, right?
The Bible has 66 books with marching orders for Christians. I suspect most of us have not yet fulfilled those orders. Given that, why are we always looking for more revelation?
Instead of looking for the latest "word," why not study the one we already have? It's tough work, but pays a much higher dividend.
Excellent motivational Bible study!.......2007-08-14
Though I have not yet finished this book, what I have read is amazing! It is inspirational, motivational, and will give you the "push" that you need to fully give your life to God and see the awesome places and things He has planned for you!! I highly recommend it!
Excellent study.......2007-07-25
I just finished reading He Speaks to Me by Priscilla Shirer and it was wonderful! If you like Beth Moore, you will definitely like Ms. Shirer. Some books that I read like this often fizzle out towards the end and pack less punch, but this one only got better. I think I underlined half the book! I felt encouraged, comforted and convicted all at the same time and I very much look forward to applying this practical principles to my life. They are not new principles, but her directness and clarity really made it so real to me. I can also relate to her as she is a mom of young children as well! It is based on 1 Samuel 3. Very worth the read!
good group book.......2007-03-23
A group of women related only by neighborhood (not church affiliation or denomination, nor maturity in faith) are doing this study. It is a challenge for sure, but worth recommending!
The study focuses on why young Samuel heard the voice of God, and how we (particularly women) can be more directed and transformed by Him. The author is not afraid to get to your heart and ask tough questions.
Note: "hearing from God" is not charasmatic in this book, but it pushes the reader to dig into the word of God for true understanding and transformation. The "homework" questions are open-ended, rather than fill in the blank, but very manageable to do for a weekly study.
Hot public topics (wives submitting to husbands, homosexuality, legalism, and more) are in this study. This might present a challenge in group discussions, but don't shy away from it! Take the lead from the author and concentrate on your own heart, rather than the failings of anyone else, and you'll find true value in this book.
Our group has grown (in numbers, faith, and relationship with each other) during the course of this study.
Best Study on Prayer.......2006-11-10
Priscilla does a fantastic job on explaining why our prayers may go unanswered. Learning how to open your heart to the Lord and let Him work in and through you is so vitally important. There is also a Bible study workbook to go along with this book. The ladies of our church are just finishing up this study and have enjoyed it. I would recomend this to anyone who wants to get serious about their prayer life and worship of the Lord.

A book that has already helped thousands of readers to discover a prayer life that is what we long for and see patterned in Scripture.

Excellent!!! I bought 10 copies to share with friends. This is a great book to use in a small study group or with a friend. It will expand your prayer life.
A deeper spiritual walk.......2007-04-13
Brad Jersak does a fantastic job laying out the scriptural basis for directly hearing from God, and even better, having a two-way conversation with Him. This book single-handedly revolutionized my time studying the scriptures and praying. After practicing the drills Brad recommends, I was able to feel more connected to God than ever before. This is a must read.

Six voices from an inner-city classroom
In a series of candid free-form poems, Karen English presents the thoughts of six third-grade children in one day and one classroom at an inner-city public school. Malcolm is the central observer, but also a dreamer. Rica has turned eight today, and her real father will be picking her up later. Brianna is upset because Rica has given over "best friend" status to Neecy. There's Lamont, who aspires to be teacher's pet, and Tyrell, a kid bound for trouble from the moment he arrives.
Inspired by her own experience as an elementary school teacher, Ms. English captures voices that reflect a range of emotion and interest children will easily identify with, and Amy June Bates's watercolors breathe pictorial life into the characters.

Poetry slam dunk.......2005-02-07
In spite of the nationwide acceptance of the verse novel, kids in general don't get a whole lot of poetry in their daily lives. There's hip-hop of course, but either it's a little too old for your average elementary school kid in terms of subject matter or its some hokey made-for-children junk concocted by white middle class joes living in the suburbs and presented within an educational context. Poetry itself, in its purest form, is a difficult form of writing. There are so many bad poetry books for children out there that the good ones tend to fall between the cracks. It is the dearest wish of my heart (right next to the dream that someday they'll come up with Godiva flavored gum) that "Speak To Me (And I Will Listen Between The Lines)" be remembered for years to come. A funny, sad, thoughtful picture book following the musings of six urban third grade schoolchildren in the course of a day at school, the book has a voice entirely of its own. More importantly, it fills a real gap in children's libraries everywhere. Though you may have to introduce it to them first, once discovered "Speak To Me" should garner itself a fair hoard of fans. If there's any justice in the world anyway.
There's Malcolm, Brianna, Lamont, Rica, Tyrell, and Neecy. And before you even get to the title page, you can see Malcom leaning on the top of the monkey bars on the playground wistfully contemplating the city in the poem, "The Playground In the Morning Before School". This quiet sober reflection about a child's love of a moment of pleasant solitude artfully begins the book. From thereon in every fear, hateful thought, desire, jealous moment, and feeling of admiration is written in the first person child's point of view. Tyrell angrily begins his day on the wrong foot with "I Don't Care" in which he states matter-o-fact, "I don't care about anything this day / And you can't make me". Rica thinks about her father coming to pick her up after school in the interesting, "My Real Daddy". And Brianna, dumped as a friend by Neecy, has an angry day of thinly controlled jealousy and self-pity. The book looks solely at how the kids feel while in school, not remarking on their home lives (apart from Rica's father) or why they act the ways they do. More, it shows how they feel from moment to moment, making for powerful reading. I would be amiss in not mentioning illustrator Amy June Bates' fabulous illustrations too. Whether a kid is stretching her leg across a lunch table seat or doing some double dutch, these are realistic individual kids that you really come to care for.
The book reminded me quite a lot of the novel, "Bronx Masquerade" by Nikki Grimes. But unlike "Bronx Masquerade", a teen collection of poems that relies heavily on contemporary slang and phrases, this collection is somewhat timeless. What's even most important is that the book doesn't make it seem as if these poems were actually written by the children themselves. That frees the author up to create poems with a little more sophistication. The poems are just stanzas that perfectly capture how certain kids feel at certain times. You also find yourself getting wrapped up in the characters' struggles and lives. I don't know what Tyrell's family situation is at home, but I get the feeling that it's not perfectly happy. Similarly, I felt bad for Brianna who kept standing alone wishing that Neecy would be her friend again. This book, more than anything else, is what a teacher sees every day. And with many of these poems (like "My Real Daddy") you need to read between the lines to figure out what these kids are really dealing with. It's heady fare for a picture book.
Poetry will never be declared as popular an art form as prose. But with the help of book like "Read To Me", I think some kids will be able to find poetry to be a way to deal with their daily lives and struggles. It's a great book and an even greater collection. A book that deserves greater attention.

Transformed my prayer life.......2005-06-15
This book, along with Brad's seminar on Listening Prayer, have been integral in transforming my prayer life. Prayer is so much more personal when it is approached as a two-way dialogue. This book contains many personal stories and is strongly supported with scripture. I highly recommend Can You Hear Me to anyone looking to deepen their relationship with the God Who Speaks.
Fantastic!.......2004-11-01
I read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It confirmed things that I already knew, and pushed me into new directions in communicating with God. I hope you are equally challenged by it.

Multipurpose read.......2004-06-02
This book is a great read for leisure as well as academic purpose. If reading for leisure, the writing is very smooth and chapters flow into one another, it also teaches you a little of Bolivian history and politics without feeling like you're studying. For academic purposes it is a very useful example of complicities between various groups and how they can undermine people's movements, but it is also a good example of how one can get beyond complicities to help erradicate injustice. It is not naive, and is a very multifaceted analysis of the human condition. If Domitila would write this again I would like to see a fuller discussion of the achievement of trust between different groups that may not have been friendly at times, but that might make it more academic and less interesting for an evening, weekend or vacation read.
A Rare Jewel........2000-07-12
As a woman of color, late to academia I found this book validating, illuminating and refreshing. Domatila's life and words clearly illustrated what Paulo Freire was trying to convey in his book "Pedagogy of the Oppressed." In simple language Domatila and Moema Viezzer explained the highly complex nature of the work of organizing and humanizing both the oppressed and oppressing populations of the world. It's high time those of us who live in comfort and peace recognize that we share responsibility, even if only through non-action, for the dehuminization of working-class people througout the world. Domitila calls for greater communication and understanding among all nations and social classes so that workers in mines, farms, rug factories etc., will no longer find themselves isolated and vulnerable to unscrupulous business interests and repressive governments.
Hogwash.......2000-07-06
It seems that Sra. Barrios de Chungara has been reading and rehashing Capital and The Communist Manifesto. Her major weakness is the contradiction that she wants equality for everybody but only if she can dictate it. She seems to place a lot of importance on herself. She blames all of her problems and the problems of Bolivia on the United States, like many other Latin American literature books seem to do. She is a lot like Rigoberta Menchu, who I also read, and discredit and do not recommend either. These books do not offer anything new.
eye-opening and moving.......1998-12-21
I recently read this book for a gender and economics class and I thought it was one of the best accounts of the atrocities happening to others in the world. Domitilla presents a harrowing and poignant picture of life in Bolivia that makes me wonder what else the united states and other countries are doing to developing countries that would make my stomach turn. I would guess it is a lot. I would also recommend "I Rigoberta Menchu" to anyone who also enjoyed "Let Me Speak." It too was an amazingly brave and depressing story that made me aware of the struggles others in the world face.
