Dale Earnhardt: 23 Years with The Intimidator
ASIN: 0385503636
Release Date: 2001-10-02 |
Book Description
He was The Intimidator. A nightmare in the rear-view mirror. A unique winner in the boardroom. A seven-time Winston Cup champion. A driver whose personal success story and dedication inspired the adoration of millions of fans. Then on February 18, 2001, just seconds from the Daytona 500 finish line, the world of stock-car racing suffered a devastating loss as Dale Earnhardt fatally careened into a track wall. The tragic shock waves, and an unprecedented outpouring of respect and love, have not stopped since.
At the Altar of Speed takes readers behind the scenes of Earnhardt's celebrated life, tracing his rags-to-riches journey to the top of America's fastest-growing sport. Beginning with Earnhardt's early days growing up in small-town North Carolina, veteran sports writer Leigh Montville examines how a ninth-grade dropout started on the dusty dirt tracks of the South, went through two marriages and a string of no-future jobs before turning twenty-five, then took about a million left turns to glory. Through the pitfalls and triumphs, Earnhardt would ultimately become a celebrated champion, whose lifetime earnings would top forty-one million dollars. The son of a legendary racer, the father of a NASCAR star, he lived a total auto-racing life filled with triumph and sadness, great joy and great pain.
Transporting readers to the colorful, noisy world of stock-car racing, where powerful engines allow drivers to reach speeds of 200 m.p.h., At the Altar of Speed vividly captures the man who drove the black No. 3 car, a man whose determination and inner strength left behind a legacy of greatness that has redefined his sport. Illustrated with a section of full-color photographs, At the Altar of Speed is a tribute to both the man and his unbeatable spirit.
Customer Reviews:
Exciting tale that will interest even those who aren't NASCAR fans!.......2007-06-27
I haven't been much of a NASCAR fan, but after listening to AT THE
ALTAR OF SPEED: THE FAST LIFE AND TRAGIC DEATH OF
DALE ERNHARDT by Leigh Montville, I just might change
my mind.
This is a very exciting tale of Ernhardt, a ninth-grade dropout who
went through two marriages and a strong of no-future jobs before
turning 25 . . . he then became a legendary champion, only to
die in a 2001 crash.
Montville interviewed many close to Ernhardt, and it shows . . . I got
a real feeling for the man, as well as for his role in the tremendous
growth of the sport . . . though I still might not run to watch the
Daytona 500 or any other race on TV, I will not at least appreciate
all that the drivers have to go through to even enter the event.
Great introduction.......2006-03-02
Biography on one of if not the best driver in NASCAR history. Montville walks the reader through the triumphs and defeats of Earnhardt Sr. through his racing career and establishment of DEI. He concludes with the legacy of the "intimidator" after his untimely death at the 2001 Daytona 500. Well written book that only introduces the reader to the Earnhardts.
Dale Earnhardt was the man!.......2004-12-22
Scott Stout, I bet you didn't even read the book. Don't go bashing it just because you are not an Earnhardt fan. Folks are growing tired of your reviews, look how many find them helpful! (SS, WMD).
Montville informs well.......2003-03-05
I just finished this book, and I absolutely loved it. It had me laughing, crying, and everything in between. I'm an avid NASCAR fan, and Dale Earnhardt is and will always be my favorite driver. I am following the path of his son, and I have also read Driver #8. Both books are fantastic, and a lot of fun to read. Very hard for me to put down!
This Book was Written by a NASCAR Outsider.......2003-01-02
It's obvious that this book was written by an (admitted) outsider to NASCAR. After finishing the book, I felt like Leigh Montville sat around listening to stories about Dale and then decided to write a book about those stories. I'm sorry, but I feel like the only reason this book was written was for compensatory reasons.
In one section, Mr. Montville writes that whereas other NASCAR drivers said that they were friends with Dale, Dale did not feel that they were his true friends (saying that you would always see them hang out at his trailer, but you would not see him hanging out at theirs). Dale did admittedly hang out with other drivers (outside of race weekends) and go vacationing, hunting, and fishing with them.
Being a huge NASCAR fan, I was overall very disappointed with this book (though I did enjoy the section about Dale and Neil Bonnett). If you want a brief overview of Dale's life, then this may be the book for you. If you want to find out the real/more in depth story, then I would suggest you buy a book from an author who either really knew Dale personally or has spent most of their life affiliated with NASCAR. That's what I plan to do.

Book Description
In the growing world of NASCAR, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., is a new kind of star. His down-home modesty, rock-and-roll lifestyle, and blinding intensity on the racetrack represent the new face of this fast-paced sport. Now Dale Jr. straps you into the #8 car for a wild ride through his rookie year.In this full-throttle story, Dale Jr. shares a tumultuous year of victory and joy, tragedy and heartbreak. At the age of twenty-five, he embarks on his first Winston Cup season. In a time filled with lofty expectations, when he tries to concentrate on winning, he is thrust into the limelight and forced to endure the crush of the media, huge crowds, endless travel, and faster and more dangerous cars than he has ever driven before. Week after week he goes bumper-to-bumper with his father and more than forty of the world's finest drivers-all the while trying to carve out his own identity and win the respect of his peers.DRIVER #8 takes you on NASCAR's inside track. You'll see how races are won or lost and the strategies that go into every lap and every race. You'll get a compelling look at the bond necessary between a driver and his team and understand how, come race day, the spotter is often the driver's best friend. And you'll learn how that bond can be stretched when the season begins to turn sour and the weight of racing against a man who is not only your father but also your boss, your toughest competitor, and a NASCAR legend takes its toll on a young driver.Powered by a high-octane mix of bravado, humility, and a lot of beer, Dale Jr. captures the unique pressures of making split-second, life-and-death decisions behind the wheel of a racecar...and highlights the perks-and often the drudgery-that go along with being a rising star in the world's most colorful and exciting sport. Thrilling, vivid, and authentic, DRIVER #8 is one helluva ride.

Interesting book.......2007-10-17
I like the fact that this was written by Dale, Jr not just someone elses words.
Great book!.......2007-10-06
This book was great. I enjoyed the descriptions of all of the tracks that Jr. raced at and how he talked to his dad and Matt Kenseth about things that were happening at any one moment. I also enjoyed hearing how him and Tony Jr. have such an honest relationship. They may yell at each other during a race on the radio, but after the race is over they are able to go back to being cousins/friends again. They leave it all on the racetrack. Very well written book! A must for any Jr. fan!
Driver #8 by Dale Earnhardt.......2007-07-09
This book is great! It is just like you are sitting and talking to him. It seems to be word for word what Dale was tring to say.
What a good job.......2007-05-13
I really enjoyed reading about his experience as a driver. It is well written and not boring. Which it could have been since it is always hard to write about work. I loved watching his father race and now I get to watch him.

Book Description
In the four years since his dad's untimely death, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has lived up to the legacy The Intimidator left behind. Keeping the diehard No. 8 fan up-to-date on the stellar career of one of NASCAR's current top stars, this second edition will contain all the original edition's Circle Track and Stock Car Racing magazine articles that followed Little E from Andy Hillenburg's driving school through the Busch Series to Cup racing, and adds pieces on Jr.s successful 2003, 2004, and 2005 seasons. With 15 wins through 2005, he has been in the thick of the championship hunt the last two seasons while only continuing to heighten his profile as a spokesman for NASCAR racing. An American Legend.......2004-12-19
My brother recently died and he was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan. Well, I didn't really like him but because my brother did I decided to watch the movie. I loved it. I grew up around racing with my brother and don't live but about 5 miles from the Talladega track in Alabama. I highly recommend this movie.
A wonderful way to remember a great human being.......2004-12-18
This movie was very well done and well worth buying the DVD. Dale Earnhardt was an inspiration to us all.
Excellent Story!.......2004-12-13
I Became a Dale Earnhardt fan in 1988, first year of the Goodwrench Sponsorship. Didn't know much about him before '88, this movie gave a great perspective on his early life and what shaped him. I was at Daytona in '01 and this American Hero is missed very much by our family!

Dale Earnhardt, Jr: Out of the Shadow of Greatness
ASIN: 0760315175 |
Book Description
In a sudden, three-year rush, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has become NASCAR's most significant superstar, the first to truly transcend the traditions of stock-car racing and carry the sport to the pages of People, Rolling Stones, and even Playboy. Young Earnhardt embodies the legacy and tragedy of his father, seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, killed at Daytona in February 2001, and he has carried that legacy rightly and modestly to victory in NASCAR's major league. Yet, Junior, even under the magnifying glass, has created a sphere in which he has become a man in his own right. In association with Circle Track and Stock Car Racing and its veteran NASCAR contributor Benny Phillips, Dale Earnhardt Jr. brings you close to this engaging young man, and close to the quiet center of a roaring phenomenon. Phillips, a 40-year veteran of the NASCAR garages and a friend of Earnhardt Sr., tells the story, with illustrative articles from Circle Track and Stock Car Racing. The photography, from Primedia sources and from top NASCAR lensman Nigel Kinrade, is illustrative and spot-on.
Customer Reviews:
this is a good book .......2005-02-04
I think this was a good book. I liked this book alot. The only bad thing was that some of the words are big and difficult to understand. If I had to do a project on Dale Earnhardt Jr. I would use this book a one of my major sources. I gave this book a four since the words were hard to find what they mean. If you like nascar and you dont like him this book will change how you feel about him. This book also tells how he got his "thing" for the sport of stock car racing. It also tells in the back of the book how much he got for each race which I thought it was very interesting. So if you are looking for a good information about dale earnhardt jr, or just want something interesting to read so you go out and buy this book. Trust me it is well worth the cost.

Dale Earnhardt: The Pass in the Grass and Other Incredible Moments from Racing's Greatest Legend
ASIN: 1581822448 |
Book Description
Dale Earnhardt was known as the Intimidator on the NASCAR circuit. He truly was a living legend in the world of racing, but his life ended tragically in February 2001 when he was killed on the last lap of the Daytona 500. Earnhardt's untimely death at age forty-nine shocked the racing world and the world at large.
Although in recent years Earnhardt had relinquished his No. 1 spot among Winston Cup drivers to others, he was still considered the greatest threat to win every time he took the wheel. Indeed, his craggy, mustachioed countenance remained as familiar to millions as any other sight in the NASCAR world, and his greatness seemed to grow every time he raced.
NASCAR's Rookie of the Year in 1979, Earnhardt forged a career that included seven NASCAR national championships, seventy-six career wins (including his lone Daytona 500 victory in 1998), and over $34 million in prize money, which is more than any other driver has ever won. Earnhardt was as tough as they come behind the wheel, also earning the name of "Old Ironhead" in part because of his reputation for never backing down on the track, where close calls and bumps at nearly 200 miles per hour are part of the sport's inherent risk.
In I Remember Dale Earnhardt, the Intimidator is remembered through hundreds of anecdotes, stories, and insights recounted by fellow drivers, team members, NASCAR officials, and friends and associates. Together they offer a unique and touching reminiscence of one of the greatest and most charismatic race car drivers ever to climb behind the wheel.
Customer Reviews:
A must have!.......2006-03-14
I started watching NASCAR in the late 80's and instantly became a Dale Earnhardt fan. I followed his career and road the roller coaster of good years and bad years. I learned everything I could possibly learn about the man. When I read this book, I learned so much more!
It's one thing to be a fan and to read about or hear about your driver. But to hear personal stories from the people who were closest to him and knew him best is just a whole other world. With stories from Ken Shcrader, Jeff Gordon, Bud Moore, Junior Johnson, Humpy Wheeler and many more NASCAR personalities that knew him intimately, this is definitely THE essential Dale Earnhardt book. At the risk of sounding like an advertisement, if you only read one book about Dale Earnhardt, make it this one!
DALE EARNHARDT WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.......2002-01-07
Just by reading this book. You can tell that Dales memories will always live on forever. If you a HUGE Dale Earnhardt fan like myself, then this book is for you.
*We love you Dale. Your memories will always live in my heart til I see you in Heaven, racing on the tracks of gold. God bless.*
Dale Earnhardt is the BEST.......2001-08-22
In the book, I expected a lot more stories and anecdotes from racers; I could barely find any. But that's a minor detail. I am a hard-core Dale Earnhardt fan, and this book was very heart-warming. I love all the personal stories of Dale! I haven't gotten a chance to look at it all yet, but it's a wonderful book. I was not a huge racing fan (like I am now) when most of Dale Earnhardt's terrific achievements took place, and this book took me to that land. I'd like to thank whoever's book this is, because all I wanted was a book of tidbits like this, and now I have it. I completely treasure this book. If you are only looking for stories from racers like Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton (some of my personal faves) this may not be right for you, but if you luv the Earnhardts as much as I do, don't hesitate.

Very good guide at that time.......2002-03-05
This was a fine guide at the time of purchase in 2000.
It is now 2002 and most of the values are very much out of date. If you are buying or selling be very careful...consult a current edition of Die Cast Digest. Hope CheckerBee Publishing puts out a current edition.
My favorite race car driver.......2001-07-03
This book is great for a Dale Earnhardt fan or a race car fan. The book is mostly about him and his career, but it also features Steve Park, Dale Jr.,Michael Waltrip, the 3rd base coach of the Atlanta Braves Ned Yost, and many other former and active drivers, like Richard Petty or Bill Elliot. There is also a track guide for all the race tracks. It also talks about the crash at Daytona. There is much more. #3 is still the best!

THE BEST STORY EVER TOLD.......2002-01-07
This book will leave you in tears, laughter and every other emotion. I bought this when it first came out and read it. I wasn't very emotional then, cause Dale was still with us. But now the he's left for a better place with God, this book makes me cry when reading it. It is great book all about his life on and off track. A book that I will cherish forever. ...
THE INTIMIDATOR.......2001-09-16
THE BOOK WAS GREAT, IT COVERED ALOT OF AREAS IN HIS LIFE THAT I LEARNED ABOUT, A GOOD BOOK TO READ. A GREAT KEEP SAKE. I'M GLAD I BOUGHT IT. HE WAS A GREAT PERSON AND IS TRULY MISSED.
Informative but lame.......2001-02-26
This book is informative enough about Earnhardt but is written on a third grade reading level. I'm an Earnhardt fan but found the readability of the book to be pathetic. Of course, I guess the author was writing to his audience.
