Book Description

Bestselling author Barbara Kingsolver returns with her first nonfiction narrative that will open your eyes in a hundred new ways to an old truth: You are what you eat.

"As the U.S. population made an unprecedented mad dash for the Sun Belt, one carload of us paddled against the tide, heading for the Promised Land where water falls from the sky and green stuff grows all around. We were about to begin the adventure of realigning our lives with our food chain.

"Naturally, our first stop was to buy junk food and fossil fuel. . . ."

Hang on for the ride: With characteristic poetry and pluck, Barbara Kingsolver and her family sweep readers along on their journey away from the industrial-food pipeline to a rural life in which they vow to buy only food raised in their own neighborhood, grow it themselves, or learn to live without it. Their good-humored search yields surprising discoveries about turkey sex life and overly zealous zucchini plants, en route to a food culture that's better for the neighborhood and also better on the table. Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, Animal, Vegetable, Miracle makes a passionate case for putting the kitchen back at the center of family life and diversified farms at the center of the American diet.

"This is the story of a year in which we made every attempt to feed ourselves animals and vegetables whose provenance we really knew . . . and of how our family was changed by our first year of deliberately eating food produced from the same place where we worked, went to school, loved our neighbors, drank the water, and breathed the air."

5 out of 5 stars A fun and informative read.......2007-10-20

As I got closer and closer to the end of the book I started to feel upset that the story was coming to a close before I was ready. I didn't want to let go of this family or it's recipes. It breaks my heart that I wasn't able to get my hands on Steven's bread recipes!
What this big DID do was open my eyes to my food choices which can be hard but very neccessary.
If you are considering this book, don't hesitate. Some of the industrial information, like the treatment of chickens and the depletion of heirloom vegetables for the sake of shipping ease, was a little of a hard read compared with the sweet anecdotes of this charming family, but that shouldn't deter anyone from finishing this book and changing the way that they eat.

1 out of 5 stars Wolf in Sheep's Clothing.......2007-10-18

This book was absolutely horrifying. I kept flipping back and forth, and couldn't believe what I was reading. While bringing about thoughts for a great cause--buying local; making your own; sustainability; etc., Kingsolver, with sadistic humor, walks us through the process of killing innocent animals for food. It's is absolutely shocking and sickening. In this century, the practice of killing animals for food is barbaric, and she proves where she stands on this issue. There are plenty of plant foods to sustain us all, without being cruel. Two thumbs down for Barbara Kinsolver. I used to be a fan. After reading this, I don't want to be associated in any way with this author.

5 out of 5 stars We are what we eat!.......2007-10-16

This is the 12th Barbara Kingsolver book that I've read (in other words - all of them)....and once again, I was not disappointed. Ms. Kingsolver brings the reader around to her point of view with solid facts, wit, and ideas and images constructed in clear, lovely language. She leaves me yearning for more of her fine writing as well as her commitment to being part of the solution.
Keep Animal, Vegetable, Miracle close at hand for future references - and recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Satisfied.......2007-10-12

My book arrived promptly and was in perfect condition. I would buy from this seller again.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, with Reservations.......2007-10-10

I was attracted to this book as a kindred spirit (of sorts) to the author. I have been growing much of my own food (plant-based, anyway) as I could for many years. I prefer to eat seasonal foods, and buy locally produced items whenever available.

So I was a little disappointed when I first began reading, as much of the first chapter or two is taken up by the author's berating us all for our ignorance and our eating habits, as well as a lot of good, but unfortunately not new to me, information on our food supply.

Thankfully though, I hung in there, and found it to be an enjoyable read overall. I was looking forward to hear someone else's experiences in the garden and the kitchen, and that I did get.
I found myself skipping some parts, the description of the poultry slaughtering for example.
The book also includes sidebars written by her husband, which were mainly summaries of reports one may have already read elsewhere; and essays written by her daughter, Camille. I didn't find these entries of interest, and so skipped them as well.

If you enjoy reading about food and or gardening, or you have been having second thoughts about your grocery habits lately, then I recommend this book.

Book Description

In the first hours there was nothing, no fear or sadness, just a black and perfect silence.

Nando Parrado was unconscious for three days before he woke to discover that the plane carrying his rugby team, as well as their family members and supporters, to an exhibition game in Chile had crashed somewhere deep in the Andes. He soon learned that many were dead or dying—among them his own mother and sister. Those who remained were stranded on a lifeless glacier at nearly 12,000 feet above sea level, with no supplies and no means of summoning help. They struggled to endure freezing temperatures, deadly avalanches, and then the devastating news that the search for them had been called off.

As time passed and Nando’s thoughts turned increasingly to his father, who he knew must be consumed with grief, Nando resolved that he must get home or die trying. He would challenge the Andes, even though he was certain the effort would kill him, telling himself that even if he failed he would die that much closer to his father. It was a desperate decision, but it was also his only chance. So Nando, an ordinary young man with no disposition for leadership or heroism, led an expedition up the treacherous slopes of a snow-capped mountain and across forty-five miles of frozen wilderness in an attempt to find help.

Thirty years after the disaster Nando tells his story with remarkable candor and depth of feeling. Miracle in the Andes—a first person account of the crash and its aftermath—is more than a riveting tale of true-life adventure: it is a revealing look at life at the edge of death and a meditation on the limitless redemptive power of love.

Hard to describe the myriad of emotions deep inside of me after reading this book. I was seven when that happened and still remember the story on the front page of a newspaper in my hometown in Mexico. This event shaped in some ways my own life. Nando Parrado is brutally honest in each and every page and by recalling his ordeal, he makes us aware of how fragile life can be and reminds us, at the same time, of the importance of living it to the fullest.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-10-13

I echo all the encomiums and accolades. Deeply insightful book. Word of caution: some parts of the book might be difficult to digest, but rest assured that the story in its entirety is a very powerful one. I do not think that the way I think about challenges and obstacles I face in life will be the same hereafter. I cried a few times reading this book. I don't think any other book has evoked similar emotions in me.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT STORY.......2007-09-11

Must read for anyone who has climbed in the mountains and a must not read for anyone going to climb in the snow or fly ain a plane over the Andes. Scary and heroic and entertaining all at the same time. You won't believe the story unless you read it straight from a survivor. Not only a survivor, but THE survivor who walked more than 70 miles with one other person until they reached help. 72 days in the Andes, thats the only fact you need to know to want to open this book and read it.
Easy read that takes no time to read. Highly suggested

5 out of 5 stars "Even in this place, ours lives are worth living".......2007-07-24

Readers will wonder what Nando Parrado has to say that wasn't already said in Piers Paul Read's masterpiece, "Alive." Even Parrado expresses his doubts that he can add something to Read's tale (he says Read told the story "masterfully"). But, behold a new masterpiece: Parrado and co-author Vince Rause have created a stirring, compelling piece of work.

Whereas Read's work is a facts-based recounting of the events, Parrado and Rause put you inside the head of the pivotal protagonist, the survivor most committed to striking out on an expedition. We see his commitment ("I tell myself that each step takes me closer to my father"), his fears, his horror at losing two family members at the crash site. Amazing stuff, shaped into powerful, declarative language by Rause. The text is crisp, sharp and fast moving. Rause captures Parrado's voice.

It's estimated that Parrado and fellow expeditionary Roberto Canessa traveled some 45 miles before running into a peasant herder tending to his flocks. That's 45 of the hardest miles imaginable. So hard, in fact, that the rescuers ask Parrado - as they ready to scale a 13,000 ft peak via helicopter - "Are you sure you understand this map?" They're simply incredulous (rightfully so) that these two had crossed the high Andes on foot ("Impossible!"). But, indeed they had. It's mind-boggling...a trip that has to rank in the annals with Shackleton's journey across the seas in a skiff back to South Georgia.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Strongly recommended. M R JAMES NEWSLETTER Stories of restless spirits returning from the afterlife are as old as storytelling. In medieval Europe ghosts, nightstalkers and unearthly visitors from parallel worlds had been in circulation since before the coming of Christianity. Here is a collection of ghostly encounters from medieval romances, monastic chronicles, sagas and heroic poetry. These tales bore a peculiar freight of spooks and spirituality which can still make the hair stand on end. Look at the story of Richard Rowntree's stillborn child, glimpsed by his father tangled in swaddling clothes on the road to Santiago, or the sly habits of water sprites resting as golden rings on the surface of the river, just out of reach. Writer and broadcaster Andrew Joynes brings together a vivid selection of these tales, with a thoughtful commentary that puts them in context and lays bare the layers of meaning in them.

If you like ghost stories, you'll love the anthology MEDIEVAL GHOST STORIES compiled and edited by Andrew Joynes. Joynes compiled European tales that range from the 8th to the 14th centuries. The book is divided into four sections. Part One is Miracula and the Monastic Vision of Ghosts. Part Two is Mirabilia and Ghosts in Court Writing. Part Three is entitled Revenants, Prodigies and the Restless Dead. Part Four is Ghosts in Medieval Vernacular Literature. Each section has an overall introduction and each author or literary text also has information before it. The information links the stories from widely different periods together and shows that these tales, although quite different from the modern ghost story, are its literary ancestors.
I enjoyed all the stories, but find that I was quite fond of the stories regarding the Wild Hunt, The Tale of King Herla and Bisclavret by Marie de France.
If you are interested in the mindset of Middle Ages or enjoy legends and tales of the supernatural, you will definitely enjoy this lovely anthology. A selected bibliography and index are included.

Product Description

Devout and charismatic, Aimee Semple McPherson led millions in prayer. A pioneer in female travelling evangelism, McPherson was believed to possess a healing touch. Great masses of the sick and the burdened gathered from far and wide to hear her sermons and perhaps to be cured by the miracle worker. This is the story of one woman?s extraordinary life full of missionary adventures in the Far East, fervent radio preaching, empire building, and spectacular pulpit performances.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointing, but okay........2007-10-10

The book seemed to dismiss the incredible way God used this woman's gift of healing, majoring mostly on her failures as a human being. We are ALL flawed, but few are willing to give their entire life to God. Yes, she was human, but a true blessing to thousands and thousands of people in need. After reading the book I felt sad rather than inspired or uplifted.

Product Description

The only way to remove the darkness is to illuminate it, to shine the spotlight in the darkest corner, and to open our eyes wide to observe it (whatever "it" is) with an absence of fear. Inevitably, each dim, earthly adventure brings the balance of light. The divine laws of nature and of karma ensure that there must be the "yang" with the "yin." Dissecting and breaking down to a microscopic level to fully examine even the most nefarious side of life is the way to bring light to the shadows we dread.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired.......2007-07-30

This book came to me at a perfect time, not so much for the dealings with the issue of suicide and coping with loss, but for the author's thoughtful and cynical take on her journey through life and all of it's unexpected and seemingly impossible experiences. Beautifully written and easy to connect with, Deelstra finds a way to make some sense of an ever present test of trust and faith in the universe. With wit and a keen sense humor she will share how she finally surrenders to it.. I love your story. Thank you for sharing.

5 out of 5 stars HEALING THROUGH THE PAIN.......2007-05-09

Yes, it is painful. It is difficult to get through the first chapter without stopping to catch your breath. If you have lived through the excruciating pain of losing a loved one, especially to something as abrupt as suicide, then you can relate. But the book opens up a new perspective, a fresh outlook that allows the reader to heal through the pain. It leaves one feeling uplifted and renewed, and really wanting to LIVE again. It heals, plain and simple.

5 out of 5 stars Of COURSE this gets a 5 from me!.......2007-05-09

The writing of this book, Blessings in the Mire was a painful and positive experience, simultaneously. It was brutal to re-live many of the experiences written within, but it was also liberating. It is my sincere desire that reading this book will heal the readers' own wounds. With the help of the angels and spirit guides we may surprise ourselves as to the great strides we can make. EVERY situation has a positive side. The key is to find the blessing in the mire and give gratitude for the event no matter how darkly disguised. May all readers benefit and thrive as a result of contemplating the existence of miracles and angel powers.

In 1960, Betty and Larry Vinton become the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl named Kimberly. When Larry's aunt, a nurse, comes to visit, she suggests they take their ten-day-old daughter to the pediatrician immediately. With growing alarm, the couple obeys, never knowing how the diagnosis will change their lives forever.

A cardiologist confirms the pediatrician's suspicions: Kim has a complex heart defect, but she is too small and too young for the necessary surgery. Despite a grim prognosis, Kim survives and thrives, needing surgeries at three months, four years, and again at thirty-two. In a Heartbeat: A baby's heart, a surgeon's hands, a life of miracles shares author Kim Russell's amazing true story of family love and of one little girl's courage against the odds.

Book Description

In the summer of 1998, Daniel Gordis and his family moved to Israel from Los Angeles. They planned to be there for a year, but a few months into their stay, Gordis and his wife decided to remain in Jerusalem permanently, confident that their children would be among the first generation of Israelis to grow up in peace.

Immediately after arriving in Israel, Daniel had started sending out e-mails about his life to friends and family abroad. These missives—passionate, thoughtful, beautifully written, and informative—began reaching a much broader readership than he’d ever envisioned, eventually being excerpted in The New York Times Magazine to much acclaim. An edited and finely crafted collection of his original e-mails, Home to Stay is a first-person, immediate account of Israel’s post-Oslo meltdown that cuts through the rhetoric and stridency of most dispatches from that country or from the international media. This is must reading for anyone who wants to get a firsthand, personal view of what it’s like for a family on the front lines of war.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly readable, personable, and informative.......2004-09-08

Began as e-mails back home to family, this book's strength is the description of day-to-day life in Israel through good times and bad. For the book, Gordis intersperses the letters with political commentary to give some context to the letters' time of writing. More personal than David Horovitz' A Little Too Close to God, it is similar in bringing the political and personal together as a family debates the wisdom of staying in Israel when the peace process goes bad. You will get drawn into experiencing the emotions and ambivalences the Gordis parents and children have about their life. Very readable!

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ!.......2004-08-30

I wish there were words to describe how great this book was. It is so hard to find a book about everyday Israeli life. In fact, is there? I saw Rabbi Gordis speak in NYC in 2004, and bought the book after his great speech. When you read this book, you feel like you are actually living in Israel. He describes every emotion he and his family is going through, the good and the bad. He is a great observer of human nature, and good writer. A must read for those you yearn to learn about contemporary life in Israel

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and with extreme passion and love.......2004-03-30

Excellent real story with extreme passion, love and deep understanding. A MUST READ for everyone.
The Jewish State for the Jews, a people so scarified, so much exterminated all over the centuries, in Europe and especially in the Arab world, world that by the beginning of the 20th century decided to exterminate, destroy and kill every single Jews in their countries, destroying as a result communities of 2500 years, reason why these Jews came to Israel our beloved land and home.
Bravo for Daniel Gordis.
BRAVISSIMO !!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Why exchange security and prosperity to live in Israel.......2004-03-30

I've read hundreds of books on Israel -- internal politics, religious strife, relationships with Palestinians, with neighbors in the Mid-East, with American Jews, with the US Congress, etc. This book covers these same issues, less academically but with a human face. The good and the bad. Gordis writes with passion, but not an agenda. An excellent read for anyone who cares about Israel, especially if you have ever considered living there -- or want to better understand why so many Jews have exchanged the security and prosperity they had in the diaspora for life in the Holy Land.

5 out of 5 stars A moving account of difficult times.......2004-03-30

Home to Stay is a must-read for anyone interested in Israel. It's a moving account of one American family's move to Israel, beautifully written. Rabbi Gordis has a gift for selecting a telling anecdote about family life or a personal observation and relating it to the broader panorama of life in Israel today. I also enthusiatically recommend Rabbi Gordis' previous books, especially "If a Place can make you cry...".

5 out of 5 stars Riveting!.......2007-09-21

As a native English speaker who enjoys reading a lot in Spanish, I was not prepared to be blown away as I was by Nando Parrado's personal story.

To call this book inspirational would be a gross understatement. However, it really is difficult to find fitting remarks. It is the best work of non-fiction that I have read in at least the past ten years.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente testimonio........2007-05-12

5 out of 5 stars Milagro En Los Andes.......2007-02-06

Excellent. Conocer la historia contada por uno de sus protagonistas y la experiencia de ese grupo en situaciones extremas como las que vivieron, me hicieron reflexionar mucho. Fácil de leer, lo tienes que comentar cada rato. Es una libro que hay que leerlo.

The book was wonderful reading and I knew it was going to be, however I was stuck with two books since I made a mistake making the order. When I contacted Amazon within minutes of my purchase I was told that they could not do anything about it. Next time I will really think before ordering from you again. Thank you. Elizabeth Schwartz
