Book Description
Four million Americans currently suffer from Alzheimer's disease and experts estimate that 22 million people around the world will be so afflicted by 2025. Far too many families are struggling with the emotionally and physically draining responsibility of redefining their relationship with, and caring for, someone who not long ago was a vibrant member of society, yet may not know their own name today. A Dignified Life helps combat the burnout and frustration that often accompany the task of caring for an Alzheimer's patient. Author David Troxel, an Alzheimer's expert and executive director of the California Central Coast Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, maintains that at its simplest this approach is based on treating the person like a best friend and working from their strengths, not their weaknesses. He explains: "As family members, caregivers and professionals, we have to try to connect with them. People with this disease in some way need someone to be . . . attentive and empathetic--someone who really tries to walk a mile in their shoes." A Dignified Life goes beyond the typical tips offered by most books and takes advantage of readers' instinctive desire to build friendships and taps into the intuitive aspect of caregiving that is part of our very nature. It provides a complete model for care built around creative and effective communication and meaningful activities and includes touching stories that demonstrate how the Best Friends method continues to improve the lives of both those who have Alzheimer's disease and those who care for them.

A Dignified Life.......2007-07-04
I think this book is an excellent book in givig ideas as to the different problems that can occur when caring for one that has AD. It gives examples of the do's and don't's during various problems that can arise in caregiving
Terrific!.......2006-08-22
I had the opportunity to work with Ms. Bell at the Helping Hands center almost 10 years ago. It is an amazing program and she is the most amazing person I have ever met. This book teaches you the fundamentals of how the Day Care operates and how to communicate with those afflicted with Dementia. After all these years I still rely on this book and its teachings in my work as a therapist.
Good idea.......2006-07-05
This book was very easy to read and understand and for someone just starting caregiving the book gives some good ideas. I do think though that for more indepth information there are better books out there.
The single best book on caring for a family member with Alzheimer's disease.......2005-12-07
As a professional in the Alzheimer's field, as well as a family caregiver, I have read dozens of books on caring for people with Alzheimer's disease. Though there are many excellent ones (Claudia J. Strauss's "Talking to Alzheimer's" and Bell & Troxel's "The Best Friends' Book of Alzheimer's Activities" are other favorites), this is the first book I most recommend to anyone on the challenging journey of caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease. It is simply superb.
VERY HELPFUL!.......2005-09-03
I am a hospice chaplain and have numerous
patients who have AZ as well as my own 78
yr opld mother.
These suggestions (helped by actual suggested
dialogue) are very good and actually work.
I intuitively created some of the scenarios
with my mom before I read this book, but I have
used some of their suggestions as well and given this
book to my father and other older spouses and
friends who have loved ones with AZ. It is an
incredibly challenging disease that calls for
LOTS of patience and grace...just "go with it"
and you will be blessed with their extraordinary
courage as they learn to cope. My mother knows
something is wrong with her memory but does not
know what to do about it. Treating her with dignity
and respect takes time and thought but the Golden
Rule applies at every moment.

Book Description
An estimated 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease. That number continues to grow — by 2050 the number of individuals with Alzheimer's could range from 11.3 million to 16 million. Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging. It is a devastating disorder of the brain's nerve cells that impairs memory, thinking, and behavior. Written for patients, their families, and caregivers, A Caregiver's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease will help readers understand what is physically happening to the brain so they can empower their own special skills and talents throughout the disease process. Chapters cover legal and financial issues, family forums in the caregiving process, the role of medication at various stages of the disease, helping children understand what is happening to a loved one, handling the holidays and celebrations, and making the living environment more stimulating and enjoyable. With an abundance of pointers and guidelines for affected individuals, their families, friends and caregivers, A Caregiver's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease is essential for all readers who want to focus on the capabilities that remain instead of those that have been lost.

A GREAT HELP FOR CAREGIVERS!.......2004-06-10
I was fortunate to hear Jolene speak at an Alzheimer's conference, and she is so delightful and right-on, as is her wonderful book, which I highly recommend to caregivers of persons with any type of dementia. Learning how to create moments of joy when you are a stressed-out caregiver isn't easy, until you have Jolene's valuable guidance. She teaches you how to shift your perspective of the entire experience, have less stress and live with more joy, during one of the most challenging times of life. Beautifully done!
Jacqueline Marcell, Author, Elder Rage.
An excellent resource for caregivers.......2003-01-04
After reading books, articles, booklets and pamphlets with excellent information on Alzheimer's Disease, I found one that gave me page after page of information that was useful immediately, not only for my mother's care, but also for my own peace of mind.
It is written for professionals in care facilities as well as individual caregivers and contains direct, unflinching descriptions of what cargivers face and gentle, common sense approaches to the challenges that never seem to end.
If you are a caregiver and you want to read one book to help you understand how to cope with dementia, read this one.

A Caregiver's Guide to Alzheimer's Disease: 300 Tips for Making Life Easier
ASIN: 1594710775 |
Book Description
When Aaron Alterra's wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, the diagnosis radically altered the author's role in a vital partnership that had spanned 60 years. Husband became caregiver, and gradually came to think of himself as his wife's "primary physician," managing her care assisted by aides and medical specialists as needed. In this account, Alterra describes his attempts to find new ways to connect with his wife and to help her live at peace with her condition. He explains how caregivers can better understand the symptoms of Alzheimer's if they recognize that the patient struggles to adapt not to individual memory loss but to a loss of relationship, a lost sense of how things connect. He also shares practical information about support groups, patients' rights, and financial matters.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2004-01-20
I was very touched by the way he cared and loved his wife. He did a lot of trial and error and gave 110%.
Reality and Humility.......2001-07-24
This is a most thoughtful insight from both the point of view of the Caretaker and the one for whom care is given. Many of your own thoughts, questions, fears, victories, frustrations and actual experiences are seen and lovingly, yet honestly, shared by a gifted writer. Thought provoking, calming, and a real companion for a Caretaker who feels alone -- as we all do from time to time. Well worth the read!
Preserving Dignity.......2000-03-05
Thank you, Aaron Alterra, for sharing your very insightful experiences while giving such loving care to your dear wife, Stella. Your touching recount of Stella's final days as a cellist and your countless successful efforts at preseving her dignity brought tears as I (a sexagenerian) empathized with your many dillemmas.
I would certainly recommend this book to anyone with elderly parents or who themselves have become caregivers.
Book Description
One journalist's rivetingand surprisingly hopefulin-the-trenches look at Alzheimer's, the disease that claimed her mother's life
Like many loved ones of Alzheimer's sufferers, Lauren Kessler was devastated by the ravaging disease that seemed to turn her mother into another person before claiming her life altogether. To deal with the pain of her loss, and to better understand the confounding aspects of living with a disease that afflicts four and a half million people every year, Kessler enlisted as a caregiver at a facility she calls Maplewood. Life inside the facility is exhausting and humbling, a microenvironment built upon the intense relationships between two groups of marginalized people: the victims of Alzheimer's and the underpaid, overworked employees who care for them. But what surprises Kessler more than the disability and backbreaking work is the grace, humor, and unexpected humanity that are alive and well at Maplewood.
Dancing with Rose is forceful and funny, clear-eyed and compelling. An intriguing narrative about the relationships and realities of end-of-life care, it stars an endearing cast of characters who give a human face to what has always been considered a dehumanizing condition. Illuminating and beautifully written, Kessler's immersion offers a new, optimistic view on what Alzheimer's has to teach us.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book on an important topic!.......2007-10-22
I saw the excerpt of this book in O Magazine and had to read it. I don't have a lot of experience with Alzheimer's Disease, but it really made me think. The author writes in a way that you want to continue reading. She brings out some great points about the disease and how we need to start focusing on the experience of the people who have been diagnosed. I think it is amazing that the author went to work at a minimum wage job to get the experiences so she could write this. It is a great read for anyone!
Insightful and accurate!.......2007-08-31
I was delighted to come upon Dancing with Rose. Lauren Kessler paints a realistic portrait of day-to-day life in an Alzheimer's facility but also brings her journalistic skills to good use by referring to current research in the field.
My father-in-law has been in a top-of-the line Alzheimer's facility for two years and I have just been amazed by the warmth and caring invested in him by the aides who, in spite of understaffing, far too much responsibility and abysmal pay, find the energy and enthusiasm to go the extra mile for their patients. This book helped me to understand the rewards that aides can get out of this kind of a job and to see how I, as a family member, can make their tasks easier.
Poignant story.......2007-08-14
Dancing with Rose was a wonderful story. I found the author's thoughts very poignant. To me, the story was written with a bittersweet air, but the reader could feel Ms. Kessler's struggle and affirmation at finding the positive in the debilitating disease of Alzheimer's. She resolves that appreciating the here and now is so very important for all of us. She comes to this conclusion in her dealings with the Alzheimer's patients.
healing my grief.......2007-08-05
I was first introduced to Ms. Kessler's book through an excerpt in Oprah magazine (June 2007) entitled The Life in There. I knew then that I had to get the book. Having lost my dear grandmother six years ago to a decade long journey through alzheimers through which this incredibly loving, giving, and gentle soul became a foul-mouthed, angry, and physically violent stranger. I had been so close to her and had never come to grips with her change or her death. Ms. Kesslers honest and dignifying look at alzheimers patients has helped me to begin to mourn and heal the loss and anger of losing one so dear to me. Thank you Ms. Kessler for your courage in the undertaking of this work and in sharing with us your touching experiences.
Extraordinary.......2007-08-04
I could not put this book down. Sad as the subject matter may seem at first, Ms. Kessler has created a work which honestly and compassionately shows Alzheimers patients as fully human and alive in spite of their debilitating illness. This is a book about all that is good in life. It is vivid and compelling, an important book which I am sure will become a classic in the literature dealing with Alzheimers.
Customer Reviews:
The easiest read on the subject.......2000-10-24
I just finished Lois Bristow's book on Bea Gorman. I couldn't put it down until I was done. I have been dealing with my mother's Alzheimer's for about three years and have partially read alot of books on the subject. This was the first that I read that was both facinating and helpful. At the same time it is written in very plain english that makes it quick and easy to tackle. There is so much on the market on the subject but the "Help For The Caregiver" section of this book gets to the point quickly. What most caregivers don't have is enough time. The first half of the book in a biography of an amazing women who any one of us would aspire to emulate. I'm taking a very difficult trip next week to move my mother into a personal care home. This book will be in my back pocket. If possible, I'd have Bea sit on my shoulder.
