Book Description

On May 6, 2003, Polly Vacher took off from Birmingham airport seeking to become the first pilot to complete a solo flight around the world via both Poles in a single-engine aircraft. Despite having only a few years of flying experience, Polly, a 59-year-old mother of three, had already completed a lateral solo circumnavigation of the world in 2001 for the charity Flying Scholarships for the Disabled; this second challenge, for the same charity, would make that achievement look like a casual jaunt. There would be no margin for error. Her voyage to the ice was a 35,000-mile adventure in her Piper Dakota that would take her to at least 30 different countries on every single continent. She had prepared meticulously for two years, was fully insured and had all the requisite permits and visas. With her kinetic enthusiasm, charm and persistence, she had already garnered multifarious sponsors ranging from multinationals such as Shell to private individuals. However, as she took off on that blustery spring day, flanked by a Hurricane and a Spitfire from the RAF Battle of Britain Flight, and waved off by her family and the Prince of Wales, she suddenly felt so alone. She had begun a remarkable expedition that would gain her three world records, but would also see her encounter extremes of weather and emotion, much kindness and obstruction and also a little political intrigue.

5 out of 5 stars Fly around the world with Polly Vacher.......2006-12-30

If you love travel and adventure you will enjoy this book. It is written with candor by a female pilot about her remarkable flight around the world via the North and South Poles. Polly Vacher describes the meticulous preparation of such a flight and then takes the reader on that trip with details of the places she visits, the people she meets, the obstacles she encounters as she travels to all seven continents. Often she is flying for hours at a time, over ocean waters or inhospitable terrain. The book is filled with color photos and is an amazing story.

Book Description

The CIA and the British secret service MI6, in collaboration with the military alliance NATO and European military secret services set up a network of clandestine anticommunist armies in Western Europe after World War II. The secret soldiers were trained on remote islands in the Mediterranean and in unorthodox warfare centers in England and in the United States by the Green Berets and SAS Special Forces. The network was armed with explosives, machine guns and high-tech communication equipment hidden in underground bunkers and secret arms caches in forests and mountain meadows. In some countries, the secret army linked up with right-wing terrorists who in a secret war engaged in political manipulation, harassment of left wing parties, massacres, coup d'etats and torture.

Codenamed "Gladio" ('the sword'), the Italian secret army was exposed in 1990 by Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti to the Italian Senate, whereupon the press spoke of the "the best kept, and most damaging, political-military secret since World War II" (Observer, 18. November 1990) and observed that "The story seems straight from the pages of a political thriller." (The Times, November 19, 1990). Ever since, so-called 'stay-behind' armies of NATO have also been discovered in France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Austria, Greece and Turkey. They were internationally coordinated by the Pentagon and NATO and had their last known meeting in the NATO-linked Allied Clandestine Committee (ACC) in Brussels in October 1990.

5 out of 5 stars The Key to Understanding our present circumstances.......2007-06-08

It does not require a great deal of reading between the lines of NATO's Secret Army to awaken to the grim reality that Americans must now reckon with. The author's description of the "strategy of tension" is chilling. Anyone claiming "disinformation" immediately identifies themselves as an "insider" that others must be wary of. Ultimately, perhaps the most important book of the 21st century.

1 out of 5 stars trashing NATO.......2007-04-17

I got this book convinced to read about the Stay Behind story, but there is not much about story, but a lot of trashing of NATO, the StayBehind network and his countries.
I have to admit I only read the introduction and the chapter related to Italy. The book does not say anything about SB in itself, except bringing a lot of accusations, smear and trash against SB.
I'm a very practical person and I follow facts, even if it is an allegation or accusation, we must bring some facts. According to the author SB was involved in every negative and tragic event in Italian history, even the Red Brigades. Sorry this is bovine scatology. I went to school in Italy in the 70's and every thing, just every thing that was related to the West, NATO or US was considerad bad, actually fascist. Seems that with this book I'm back in the 70's, every thing from the West is bad/negative.
We all remember WW2, we know about the Partigiani, most of us know about BSC and the man called Intrepid.
So this is what generated the SB network. Every NATO governement knew about it, SB was fully integrated in the military and political alliance. So remember, even the left wing politicians involved in government of NATO contries knew about it. If politicians like the former italian President Cossiga are praising SB, well this is self explanatory to me. The italian network was made of 622 individuals, all in the North East corner of Italy and some on the swiss border. Some judges tried and tried to hang criminal and terror acts on SB, even with a left wing government nothing was proved, except gossip.
So the book is just a lot of accusations, that are making every comunist, anti NATO individual, very happy.

My personal thanks and admiration to the italian Gladiators and I hope and wish to you all, that one day you will receive your life back and that your service will be recognized

5 out of 5 stars There are few archbishops in espionage.......2007-02-07

D. Ganser's book is frightening. He shows how a secret stay-behind network (Gladio) that should only become effective after a Warschaw Pact invasion of Western Europe, became an all important factor in Western politics, after the wealthy and powerful understood that their real enemies were the strong communist parties in Western democracies and the political parties of the left.
As John Prados says in his excellent introduction: `in country after country, Gladio influenced, violently or not, political processes through fear and terrorism. Police and security services protected perpetrated crimes and antidemocratic `state sponsors' created terrorist networks.'

It was everything except a benign game of play. In Italy alone, the strategy of tension was responsible between 1969 and 1987, for 14591 (not less) acts of violence with political motivation. There and elsewhere, bombs exploded in Bologna, Munich and Istanbul leaving hundreds of dead and crippled.
Other dirty `tricks' were torture, coup d'états, election fraud, assassinations, disinformation, provocation and false flag operations. In one word, a destructive spiral of violence.

This warfare planning group was linked to NATO, the Pentagon and the CIA and operated completely outside democratic control from the nationally elected legislators. It made a joke of national sovereignty.

A must read for all those who try to understand the world we live in.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant study of state-sponsored terrorism.......2006-10-25

This path-breaking work by Daniele Ganser, a Senior Researcher at the Center for Security Studies at Zurich's Federal Institute of Technology, exposes the secret anti-communist terrorist organisation set up across Europe by the US and British states after World War Two. They created the Gladio network in all 16 NATO member countries and in the neutral nations of Sweden, Finland, Austria and Switzerland. They recruited former SS members as part of Germany's network.

As Ganser writes, these networks "became activists in political causes as a rule and not as an exception." The US and British states used them "to manipulate and control the democracies of Western Europe from within, unknown to both European populations and parliaments. This strategy led to terror and fear, as well as to `humiliation and maltreatment of democratic institutions'." They created and manipulated a terrorist threat, developing a `strategy of tension' to strengthen Europe's ruling classes.

Ganser points out, "Sometimes these efforts involved violence, even terrorism, and sometimes the terrorists made use of the very equipment furnished to them for their Cold War function." He observes, "The secret armies ... were involved in a whole series of terrorist operations and human rights violations that they wrongly blamed on the Communists in order to discredit the left at the polls. The operations always aimed spreading maximum fear among the population and ranged from bomb massacres in trains and market squares (Italy), the use of systematic torture of opponents of the regime (Turkey), the support for right-wing coups d'etats (Greece and Turkey), to the smashing of opposition groups (Portugal and Spain)."

The Gladio terrorists massacred 38 people in Turkey in 1977, 491 people in Italy between 1969 and 1980, and 28 people in Belgium in 1983-85. They assisted coups in France in 1958 and 1961, in Greece in 1967 and in Turkey in 1960, 1971 and 1980. They carried out the assassinations of Eduardo Mondlane, the leader of Mozambique's national liberation movement, in 1969, and of Aldo Moro, who had been Prime Minister of Italy, in 1978.

The USA and Britain thus became state sponsors of terrorism. Ganser concludes, "Many of these state-sponsored terrorist operations, as the subsequent cover-ups and fake trials suggest, enjoyed the encouragement and protection of selected highly placed governmental and military officials in Europe and in the United States." As an Italian parliamentary commission reported in 2002, "Those massacres, those bombs, those military actions had been organised or promoted or supported by men inside Italian state institutions and, as has been discovered more recently, by men linked to the structures of United States intelligence."

The British state still uses the Gladio `strategy of tension', exploiting fundamentalist terrorists to increase state powers. For example, MI5 ran Abu Hamza: for ten years they let him recruit and train terrorists for use abroad. Inevitably, some, like the 7/7 London bombers, turned on their hosts. Even now the state protects Hamza, refusing to prosecute him on terrorism charges.

5 out of 5 stars What every European should know.......2005-12-02

A book both enlightening in its academic post-mortem of recent Western European history and terrifying in its subtext of what might still be in store for the region. Ganser reveals the role of Nato (and specifically the United States) in right-wing terror attacks on European soil, and to some degree breaks through the wall of secrecy surrounding the Gladio units set up in the aftermath of World War II. Nato's Secret Armies is an essential guide to understanding post-war European politics and the powerful realpolitik of EU-US relations.

Book Description

Rising from sandbars on the Platte River with clarion calls, the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) feels the urgency of spring migration. Elegant, noble, and spiritual, the sandhill crane is one of the most ancient of all birds. More than a half-million strong, flying in squadrons, these majestic creatures point northward to their Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding ranges. Theirs is an epic story of endurance through the ages.
With 153 stunning color photographs, On Ancient Wings presents sandhill cranes in their wild but increasingly compromised habitats today. Over the course of five years, Michael Forsberg documented the tall gray birds in habitats ranging from the Alaskan tundra, to the arid High Plains, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards. With an eye for beauty and an uncommon persistence, the author documents the cranes’ challenges to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. Forsberg argues that humankind, for its own sake, should secure the cranes’ place in the future. On Ancient Wings intertwines the lives of cranes, people, and their common places to tell an ancient story at a time when sandhill cranes and their wetland and grassland habitats face daunting prospects.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing photography........2005-12-20

Michael Forsberg has put together an amazing collection of photos and is a good writer as well. On Ancient Wings shows that it doesn't matter if you've been a pro photographer for 35 years or ten, all that matters is the emotional impact of the photography. There's certain well-known wildlife photographers out there who talk talk talk about how good they think they are and then there's photographers who just are. Forsberg falls in the latter category.

5 out of 5 stars A fine tribute marries natural history and visual display.......2005-06-07

At once a coffee table photo celebration and a natural history, any avid birder should consider photographer Michael Forsberg's On Ancient Wings: The Sandhill Cranes Of North America to be essential reading. The photos alone - full-page color spreads which are gorgeous in their all-season crane portraits - are worth repeated looks, covering cranes in environments from Alaska to Cuba. Then, there's the discourse surveying the natural history and lives of cranes, revealing their interactions with people and their attempts to adapt to a changing natural world. A fine tribute marries natural history and visual display, inviting audiences from natural history students to casual readers to partake.

5 out of 5 stars Extravagantly beautiful wildlife photography.......2005-04-16

A geo-photographic tribute to America's elusive but elegant cranes, along with their widely diverse habitats. Part journal and part photography book, the author takes the reader on journeys to Alaska (including a breathtaking view of cranes flying past Mt. McKinley) to Florida, from the Central Valley of California to the agricultural plains of Wisconsin. Between, readers are treated to wildlife vistas in the Teton and Yellowstone National Park region, Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in the desert of New Mexico, and the Platte River, which flows through the High Plains of Central Nebraska. Not just a travel documentary, this is the first book of a remarkable young artist, who will dazzle and delight readers with a poetry of cranes as observed through the lens of his camera.

    Book Description

    "So That Others May Live"

In December 1994, two gargantuan rogue waves struck the Salvador Allende, knocking down the 450-foot cargo ship in the mid-Atlantic. In the darkness and howling winds, in the midst of a horrific, impenetrable storm, the terrified survivors clung to their lives by the thinnest of threads-out of contact and out of the reach of any ship afloat.

A thousand miles away, one of the world's most elite rescue teams scrambled into action...

This is the gripping and unforgettable true adventure of an astonishing rescue at sea -- a tale of the unparalleled courage and skill of men who endured a record-breaking fifteen-hour, non-stop helicopter ride through bone-jarring turbulence to carry out a mission on the ragged edge of impossibility. It is the story of a unit of the New York Air National Guard, the 106th Rescue Wing, which includes the famed PJs, the Pararescuemen, whose training is so rigorous and standards so high that only a dedicated handful qualify to join; heroes without peer who were willing to brave a maelstrom of forty-foot waves and schools of killer sharks, to risk their own lives "so that others may live."

Includes 16 pages of authentic photographs.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Great story, poorly written.......2007-01-30

Pararescue has all the elements of a great true-life rescue adventure: Painstaking research reveals a story of real heros working in impossible conditons against an implaccable natural foe, who face overwhelming odds in attempting to rescue merchant seamen in peril.
Unfortunately, the account is written in a droning first-person narrative that is a chore to read. What could have been a bestseller reads more like the voice-over script for a television documentary.
Only the fact that the true story is itself gripping enabled me to slog through the clumsy writing to experience this tale of bravery and heroism.

4 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Pararescue.......2001-07-26

The book really gave me an idea of the training and gratification that goes along with military rescue forces. Perhaps if you are not very interested in military, you will not find the same respect as I did for "Pararescue." If you are a military buff, read it!! I've been on the phones with the 106th talking about a flight slot!

5 out of 5 stars Gripping true adventure superbly told.......2001-03-10

This true story of a single adventure raised my concepts of courage and heroism to new levels. As a former journalist myself, I marveled at the author's attention to detail in exposing the gritty work of a group of men who dedicate themselves to saving lives through airborne rescue missions. The description of their elite training is worth the price of admission alone. But the tale of the rescue that is the focus of this book takes it over the top; it rivals the best adventure fiction you'll ever experience.

Another reviewer said Clint Eastwood will have a starring role in the movie they make from this book. My bet is that Harrison Ford will buy the rights to this All-American five-star thriller. Anyhow, read it now. Hollywood can't make the story any better.

5 out of 5 stars Sunken Ship - Culture Clash.......2001-02-18

    Great Read!

Pararescue, by Michael Hirsh, is one of the most thoroughly researched contemporary military history novels I have read. As a Marine officer, I am critical of books, movies, and articles about the military when they don't "get it right." I couldn't find one obvious inaccuracy in this book, which tells me Mr. Hirsh was very careful in his examination of the Air Force Pararescue community, and of the little-known USMC KC-130 aerial refueling tanker community.

Most interesting to me was the comparison of the philosophies of the helicopter crews of the 102nd Rescue Squadron, and that of the Marines of Yanky 03 - the Marine tanker crew from VMGR-452. Their attitudes and beliefs seemed to be identical - "Whatever it takes to get the job done." By contrast, the mind-set of the Air Force C-130 tanker crews seemed to be "Whatever excuse we can find to get out of this dangerous mission" and "What about our crew rest?" Strange that the "factions" mentioned in this story would be Air Force Helicopter crews and Marine on one side, and Air Force C-130 crews on the other.

Air Force LtCol Fleming, the Flight-lead of the 102 Rescue Squadron's H-60 Blackhawk rescue team, and the true hero of the book, should have been a Marine. Coming from a Marine, that is the ultimate compliment. Clint Eastwood should play his part in the movie version of this book.

3 out of 5 stars The Perfect Story.......2001-01-17

If the story of PJs have captured your interest, this is the perfect book to read after reading/watching "The Perfect Storm". Unlike Jack Brehm's autobio "That Others May Live" which was a difficult read as it was slow and a tad boring, "Pararescue" presents the rescue operation in it's entirety, not just from the perspective of one person. The planing, skill and efforts are all brought to life in a well written book. I would love to see a factual book written about PJs on a Special Operations mission along with Delta Forces or Rangers.

Asfall approaches, the birds of summer vanish from our yards and woodlands. Have you ever wondered where they go in winter? How they know when it is time to leave? And how they find their way to winterhomes and back again without a compass or a map?

Through her clear and well-researched text, naturalist Carol Lerner explores the migratory patterns of our American birds. She captures the birds' beautiful colors and markings in her vibrant, realistic paintings. Budding birders can compare these images to the flocks they spot in the sky, while more experienced ornithologists will also enjoy studying the colorful maps that show the summer and winter ranges of these migrants.

On the Wing will help anyone's interest in bird-watching take flight.

Aletta Honor’s psychic gift for reading people’s futures seems to have vanished overnight. What is curious is that the disappearance coincided with a mysterious visit from a Native American who came bearing an eagle feather and a cryptic message. Then there’s the cousin Aletta never knew she had (a young political revolutionary on the run), who suddenly appears at her doorstep and shares a shocking secret about their family.

One thing’s for sure: Aletta’s poised for change. Her no-good alcoholic ex-husband is stirring up trouble, a new lover turns out to be bad news, and she can’t bear another day of lying to unsuspecting customers. As Aletta digs deeper into her family history, her mission becomes clear: If she ever hopes to regain her clairvoyance, she must go to New Mexico to uncover her great grandmother Adelaide’s fascinating but troubling past. So with some kooky friends dying for an adventure outside the confines of their small-town world, Aletta sets off for the southwest, where she will finally come to understand her special talent and the real meaning of life.

      5 out of 5 stars A story to share.......2006-07-10

"The Wings That Fly Us Home" is a delightful continuation of the story of Aletta Honor and the folks of Okay, Oklahoma. Dayna Dunbar creates a unique cast of characters all searching for themselves in different ways. From Aletta's pilgrimage to her Indian roots, to Jimmy's inner-confrontation of his alcoholism, "Wings" shows people struggling to understand why they do the things they do.

I especially appreciated the spiritual aspects of this piece and hope people take the time to see the depths Dunbar brings to the tale.

      Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Redemption and Discovery .......2006-04-22

Aletta Honor is the warm-hearted struggling single mom and homespun psychic introduced in the author's previous book (Saints & Sinners of Okay County). She is dealing with the normal ups and downs of motherhood and failed relationships with men, when a new complication arises. Following the visit of a mysterious Indian from Arizona, Aletta finds that her psychic gift has vanished, leaving her to wonder how she will support her family.

A surprise visit from a distant cousin (who is a self-styled revolutionary running from the police) reveals that Aletta has a Native American ancestor and ultimately leads her on a voyage of discovery that will change her life. That's all I'm going to tell you about the plot. You will have to read the book.

Author Dayna Dunbar is a gifted and sensitive writer who brings every one of her characters to life. And every one of them--even the alcoholic ex-husband, Jimmy--has some redeeming features, some complexity that makes them interesting and believable. The characters are seeking redemption in different ways, some misguided, but all of them trying to better themselves. The writing flows easily, the story draws you in, and you keep turning the pages, wishing for more. The book concludes with a fascinating interview of Ms. Dunbar and a glimpse ahead to the next novel in the series.

This is a wonderful, uplifting book. I enjoyed it immensely and I recommend it highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

I found this book to be inspiring for anyone suffering from Parkinsons. Joan Grady-Fitchett the author has done an excellent job of relating to the reader the gamut of emotions involved in the diagnosis of Parkinsons. Her strong mental attitude and determination should inspire others to do the same. The book also gives important information on doctors to contact and the success and failure of her medications and treatments.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable informative human interest writing........1999-04-06

Fighting the challanges of Parkinson's Disease, sometimes winning, sometimes losing; along with general living experiences made this book an informative and enjoyable read for me. However, it ended too soon. Did she have the surgery and what were the results?

5 out of 5 stars You'll cry & laugh--a Horse Whisperer tragedy, in her body........1998-08-24

An amazing woman fights the little and big things that are no longer familiar. This disease, this invader, is slowing crashing her body. All she has left is spirit and persistence, but these are powerful. Joan's writing is tight and moving. It takes you along with her from the top of success in professional modeling. From anger. Through realization and fear. Through lovers and pain, and to rest of her life. The reader will come away a little smarter, a lot braver, and a little less a victim in their own life.

      Book Description

The people of the forest are amazed at the beauty and swiftness of She Who Flies Swiftly. She is like a bright jewel among the leafy trees. But one day they find her lying with a broken wing on the forest floor. Suddenly the Creator is there, holding her in his hand. Afterward the others wait for her to fly, but she no longer can. The forest people cannot understand - wasn't she healed by the Creator? Finally they leave her and in her sorrow she begins to sing. The song becomes more and more beautiful. Her voice is joined by that of the Creator.

This story helps us to see that healing can come in many different ways.

5 out of 5 stars Amazingly inspirational book.......2005-02-25

"When the circumstances of our lives are not changed, it does not mean that healing is not occurring," writes Buckley in his introduction. "We are not always repaired. We are sometimes re-created." Although this appears to be a children's book, the message if far from juvenile. In fact, I bought the book for myself. The story is truly inspirational and has the distinct feel of a Native American legend. I am very fond of Ray Buckley, and this is as good as the rest of his works. By one for a present, and another one for yourself.
