2 out of 5 stars Very basic.......2007-05-15

This book was ok. I was hoping for a little more detail or delving into the maid of honor duties as opposed to bridesmaid duties and this book failed to deliver. It is very simple, perhaps good for a junior bridesmaid?

2 out of 5 stars Too much responsibility!.......2006-11-10

This book gives the maid of honor WAY too much responsibility. From contacting and dealing with all the other bridesmaids so the bride can worry about others things to contacting everyone on the guest list to introduce yourself and let them know where the couple is registered. Ha! This book does contain the basics, but it pushes things a bit too far I think.

2 out of 5 stars Probably not the worst bridesmaid book out there..........2006-11-06

My husband was obsessing over his duties for a wedding that he and I were asked to stand up in. As long as I was buying him a book about being a Best Man, I decided to read up on being a Maid/Matron of honor.

Now I've only been a part of weddings in the Midwest, so I don't know how it is done elsewhere in the country, but many of the duties this book outlined seem out of date. For example, calling all of the guests and introducing myself? No honor attendent has ever called me when I was a guest! I also was not aware that the maid of honor was supposed to organize absolutely everything with wedding day hair appointments, guest accomodations, dress fittings, etc. As I bride I did all of that as part and parcel of being the bride and the brides I've stood up for have all been the same. Perhaps we are all just control freaks.

I mostly wanted information on the bridal shower and bachelorette party and I did get some ideas. And it did remind me that I needed to check in with the bride frequently to offer my services, even if she had everything under control.

The last section of the book covers toasts. Please, do not use the sample toasts. I'm not sure what the author was drinking when she wrote the section on toasts, but whatever it was, it was in large quantities. I know that not everyone is a natural public speaker, but a few heartfelt works about your relationship to the bride and well wishes would be much prefered to the toasts written in the final chapter.

1 out of 5 stars I don't understand the good reviews..........2006-07-01

I bought this book based on the reviews, but I found it to be a horrible book. I can't imagine following these rules and having friends after the wedding. What the tell you to do is be one of those annoying people that gets involved in EVERYTHING and takes over EVERYTHING.

EVERYTHING wedding related seems to be the responsibility of the Maid of Honor.

I'm scared to be a Maid of Honor after reading this book. What the author describes as responsibility of the Maid of Honor seems more appropriate for a Wedding Planner.

5 out of 5 stars This is a very helpful book.......2005-05-04

I was a little nervous to buy this book because I saw a bad review but the others were all so good. It was out of stock for a while but I bought it and I found it very helpful. The tone seemed really fine to me. I dont know if I would buy it as a bride to give to the maid of honor because I think any book would be presumptous. I think this is a book that a Maid of Honor should buy for herself. It helped me a lot.

Book Description

"Friendships, connections, family ties, trust, loyalty, obedience-this was the 'glue' that held us together."These were the principles that the greatest Mafia "Boss if Bosses," Joseph Bonnano, lived by. Born in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily, Bonnano found his future amid the whiskey-running, riotous streets of Prohibition America in 1924, when he illegally entered the United States to pursue his dreams. By the age of only twenty-six, Bonnano became a Don. He would eventually take over the New York underworld, igniting the "Castellammarese War," one of the bloodiest Family battles ever to hit New York City....Now, in this candid and stunning memoir, Joe Bonanno-likely a model for Don Corleone in the blockbuster movie The Godfather-takes readers inside the world of the real Mafia. He reveals the inner workings of New York's Five Families-Bonanno, Gambino, Profaci, Lucchese, and Genovese-and uncovers how the Mafia not only dominated local businesses, but also influenced national politics. A fascinating glimpse into the world of crime, A Man of Honor is an unforgettable account of one of the most powerful crime figures in America's history.

4 out of 5 stars a man of honor.......2006-01-12

This was a very good read as I enjoyed the information that this book made available.

Sincerely,

2 out of 5 stars A little dull at times and not a complete tell all.......2006-01-07

The book was a decent read but I found Bonanno to be quit repeatative at times. He goes on and on about the Sicilian way of life, and how American's more or less don't understand it. Furthermore he tiptoes around all violence that comes with being in the "Family" as he so eloquently puts it. I found it to be a little dry, not so "tell all", and in the end I find Mr. Bonanno using his Sicilian background and way of life as justification for being in organized crime. Although he himself would never admit that the "Family" he was apart of was organized crime, the crux of the book. He calls himself a "Man of Honor" yet he admitly cheats on his wife and lived a life ingrossed in organized crime, hypocritical to say the least.

4 out of 5 stars Man of Honor provides history.......2005-09-29

Great historical piece although quite biased. Gives the reader good insight into the Sicilian philosophy of life and business. Excellent read if you have an historical interest in the mafia and organized crime.

4 out of 5 stars more to the matter.......2003-10-01

The book is well written and very interesting. But it seems to sugarcoat the "mafiaoso" world. Where are the stories of violence that the "Tradition" is known for? Incidents like cutting off ears and fingers, horseheads in beds, general thievery and intimidation. Is all that just Hollywood embellishment or did Mr. Bonanno perfer to leave the
unsavory side of Mafia life out of his book?

4 out of 5 stars Self-serving, yet illuminating..........2003-04-22

Of course, he doesn't tell about the times he had to order that someone be "whacked." But he does go deeper than any other "Mafia memoirs" such as _The Valachi Papers_ ever did.

Or did he? Towards the end, I began wondering if, in his effort to portray himself merely as a misunderstood Sicilian businessman, his book proved that Mario Puzo had done extensive research for _The Godfather_, or if Bonanno had simply used that saga to explain the Mafia's history.

Either way, it's very readable, and very entertaining.

2 out of 5 stars I like other Diana Palmer books much better.......2006-04-29

I thought that this book was ok. I would not re-read it though. This book did not lack in action and suspence though, there was a lot undercover agents, secret missions, police forces, special agents , etc... in this book that it kept me reading it. Other than that, there was hardly any romance in it. I bought this book as a romance book and it really wasn't. The second story was better than the first. In the first story, Eb and Sallie had a bitter past together and they seemed just too forgive and forget very easily. Like in one day they were friends. Then came all the action with the drug lords and Eb ended up saving the day! The second story was rushed but I liked it better than the first. It played off of the first story, so it leads off where the other ended. So, you enojy the mercs, going undercover to catch a drug lord. I think that Mrs. Palmer should have just wrote this as one big book instead of two.

5 out of 5 stars Curl Up With This Book.......2006-02-25

whenever I want a 'feel good' night, I curl up with a diana Palmer book and this one is no exception. Having read subsequent books that reerred to both of these men, it was great to read their stories, and they certainly are hunky guys. Although some scenes really require a 'wllling suspension of disbelief," you'll know what romance is all about when you finish.

2 out of 5 stars Formulaic to say the least........2006-01-16

First let me clarify: this is from the Media Scholar's wife. What's good about this book is its' price: it's cheap. You get two stories for the price of one. What the back cover doesn't tell you is that both stories are part of a series and are completely connected (which I, as a reader, don't love). I can live with that, though. Unfortunately, the similarities don't end there. Along with having the same characters, it has the same general plot. It is 100% predictable. The last chapter of the second story is there for the sole purpose of introducing another book, the next in the undisclosed series which- surprise- has the same plot! If you have a favorite plot and enjoy series/soap operas, then this book is for you. Another book by Diana Palmer, A Matter of Trust, is virtually the same as this one. Lucky me, I read them back to back. I most likely will not read another written by this author.

5 out of 5 stars Pick up this book if you can.......2004-06-27

This book really is a big help if you are the Best Man at a wedding. It explains ALL of the things you need to be aware of and believe me some of them will surprise you. The sample toasts were a big help as well I basically just changed one of them around and used it. I think this book is a great idea.

5 out of 5 stars HUGE help! If you're a Best Man - READ THIS!.......2004-05-02

If you ever want to know how clueless we can be at times this book can help ya figure that out.

I figured I knew EVERYTHING there was to know about being a Best Man so when my girlfriend bought me this book I laughed. But hey, it became bathroom reading material. Then after 2 chapters I realized I better read it all.

Being a Best Man requires a lot more than you realize. None of it is hard but you really need to know what duties you have. This book was great about going through it and was easy to follow. The sample toasts are great too. I really think if you are reading this review because you are going to be a Best Man that you need to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on what you need to know.......2004-05-01

This is really a good book to help you with the step by steps of being a best man. I agree with the other review that there is much more than ya think. I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK - highly recommend.......2004-04-28

This is an awesome book that I highly recommend to anyone who is asked to be a Best Man. I was totally clueless about some of the stuff I was supposed to be doing. I thought all I had to do was throw a bachelor party, hold the rings, make a toast and that was all. MAN was I wrong! The book is easy to follow and very helpful. The sample toasts that come with it were great, a couple of them were really funny. I modified one of them and used it at the rehearsal dinner (yeah, no clue I had to give a toast there) and used another one word for word at the reception. Anyway just wanted to say this was a great book that people should pick up.

Book Description

The story of Sequoyah is the tale of an ordinary man with an extraordinary ideato create a writing system for the Cherokee Indians and turn his people into a nation of readers and writers. The task he set for himself was daunting. Sequoyah knew no English and had no idea how to capture speech on paper. But slowly and painstakingly, ignoring the hoots and jibes of his neighbors and friends, he worked out a system that surprised the Cherokee Nationand the world of the 1820swith its beauty and simplicity. James Rumford's Sequoyah is a poem to celebrate literacy, a song of a people's struggle to stand tall and proud.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Information on Sequoyah.......2007-02-11

My 3rd Graders LOVED this book. They espicially loved how the book included the Cherokee language. They all tried to copy it and write like Sequoyah. A perfect book on Sequoyah and the Cherokee language.

5 out of 5 stars Language is key.......2005-01-25

Well, it had to happen sometime. I knew it was just a matter of time before I found that I could no longer distinguish between amazingly well-written non-fiction picture books and adult non-fiction works of literature. It all came to a head when I sat down to read James Rumford's remarkable, "Sequoyah". A winner of the Sibert Honor, the book is a intelligent examination of the Cherokee metalworker who gave his people their own written language. Reading it, I found myself intensely interested in the book's subject and his amazing accomplishment of creating an entirely new written form. But I became depressed when I reached the end. Suddenly I wanted more information. More! I wanted to know what became of the Cherokee writing and what its state is today. It took an embarrassingly long time before I stopped blaming Rumford for being so paltry with his facts and remembered that I was not, in fact, reading an in-depth history but a remarkably interesting picture book. So ladies and gentlemen of the vast Internet universe, I can think of no higher praise to give this book than this: It makes grown adults forget what they're reading, so interesting is the material.

Rumford begins on a personal note. One year, as a child, his father brought him and his family to visit the great sequoia trees of California. And the man for whom these magnificent trees are named? A leader of his people though, as Rumford's father would say, "but not as you may think?". Thus begins the history of Sequoyah. The son of a Cherokee woman and a white father he worked as a metalworker and, at the age of fifty, decided to capture his people's voices before they were wiped out by the whites. This intention was not initially appreciated by the Cherokees who may have feared that he was adopting a European trait. After some initial mishaps, Sequoyah decided to produce a syllabary based writing system. Utilizing eighty-four letters he taught his six-year-old daughter Ayoka to read. Slowly, his new system caught on until in 1824 the Cherokee Nation gave Sequoyah a silver metal. The book ends with a full syllabary accompanied with some background information for those who would like to know more about the live and history of the Cherokee language and its creator.

James Rumford gave the world the incredibly intricate and fascinating Chadian picture book, "The Calabash Cat", containing a story written in both English and Arabic. Rumford does something similar in "Sequoyah" by printing the text both in English and, this time, in the Cherokee language. It's a remarkably beautiful language visually, and here it is translated by Anna Sixkiller Huckaby who is the training coordinator at the Cherokee Nation Cultural Resource Center. The illustrations in the book are immensely beautiful, especially within the context of the story. Rarely are dedications of picture books illustrated. Here, they are. And it improves the story. The illustrations here are inspired by the Navajo works of Quincy Tahoma, the Chinese artist He Jiaying, and the Japanese woodcut master Hiroshige. As a result, they look like woodcuts but feel more personal than anything so rough-cut. I especially loved looking at the sequoia trees at the beginning, with the tiny family silhouetted below. The people are just tiny black figures, poised against a magnificent majestic work of nature. Then you come to the story and become fully enmeshed in a single man's dream and success.

Stories of true heroes are difficult to come by. Too often the people we were supposed to praise in our youth (Columbus, Andrew Jackson, Reagan, etc.) turn out, in the light of history, to have been truly awful guys. Not men like Sequoyah, though. A true hero who accomplished a single remarkably difficult act for a noble cause, he is a hero we should all know and love. And "Sequoyah" by James Rumford, is the perfect vehicle to do so. I cannot praise this book highly enough.

4 out of 5 stars neat story.......2005-01-23

This a picture book biography of Sequoyah. I learned that he was the creator of the Cherokee alphabet. His friends teased him but he kept working anyway. He was a very smart man.
The book has beautiful illustrations. I never knew about Sequoyah before reding this book. It was a nice introduction to his life.
I would recommend this book to kids who are teased for one reason or another. Sequoyah followed his dreams when he was teased. He is a good role model for kids today.

5 out of 5 stars award winning book!.......2005-01-21

This book just won a Sibert Honor Award, given at the American Library Association meeting where they give out the Caldecott and Newberry awards and others, for its contribution to children's literature. This is a Big Deal! It's a FANTASTIC book. You won't regret getting this book. It's what I'm giving all the kids on my list this year.

i've been looking for hard hitting westerns for a while, I've read L'amour, Grey and others, Johnstones' books are the only ones I'd describe as being action packed. They are hard-hitting, hard-boiled and straight forward. This book was a blast to read and prompted me to buy 6 more in this seris.

5 out of 5 stars American Ninjas.......2003-05-03

Smoke and his very good friend Puma Buck have one of the enemy. Trying to get information about the rest of the bad guys the man resists. But after Buck threatens to skin him alive the Bad guy talks. Now Smoke wants to put terror in the bad guys by becoming NINJAS, something he had just read about in one of Sally's books. Dress up in black, sneek up on them in the dead of night and slit some skin...

5 out of 5 stars Adventurous, and intriguing.......1999-11-16

If you have ever read any of these books (mountain man) you will know that they are very exciting. Smoke Jensen, Sally and all the rest at the Sugarloaf also Preacher, they make you feel how they do and you get to really know them. Mr.Johnstone is a great story teller and i truly enjoy his books.

3 out of 5 stars Very Good and worth buying........1999-02-22

This book by William W. Johnstone is a very good one and was worth buying if u r a big fan of Smoke Jensen and all the books about him. The only complaint i have about the book is only because i have read all of his other books and i have a problem with the fact that in this book its talks about Smoke fighting in the Civil War which if u have read his first book "The Last Mountain Man" u would know that Smoke was to young to fight and his father and brother had gone to fight and he stayed home with his mother and sister. Other than that i would recomend this book to all fans of Smoke Jensen and William W. Johnstone.

Half-Hispanic, half-Yaqui Indian, and an orphan, Roy Benavidez fought his way out of poverty and bigotry to serve with the U.S. Army’s elite—the Airborne and the Special Forces. Seriously wounded in Vietnam, he was told he would never walk again. Benavidez not only conquered his disability but demanded to return to combat.

On his second tour, when twelve of his comrades on a secret CIA mission in Cambodia were surrounded by hundreds of North Vietnamese regulars, Benavidez volunteered to rescue them. Despite severe injuries suffered in hand-to-hand combat, Benavidez personally saved eight men. His actions ensured his everlasting place as one of the great heroes of the war. In February 1981, President Reagan awarded him the Medal of Honor.

5 out of 5 stars Duty, Honor, Country.......2004-04-17

I met MSG Benavidez in 1990 while stationed in NJ. I had the distinct honor of driving him around for 2 days while he was there to speak, and that experience will stay with me for the rest of my life. One thing that I remember is him saying that 22 years later metal fragments were still occasionally working their way out of his body.

I still have his picture hanging on my wall after 14 years. I have an extremely short list of hero's; Roy Benavidez holds the top slot...

5 out of 5 stars The Voice of a True American Hero.......2003-05-13

MSG Roy Benevidez was an amazing person, and that's putting it mildly. In spite of his fearful wounds from his first tour-of-duty and doctors saying that he would never walk again, he went on to become an elite member of the US Army Special Forces. His actions in combat showed him to be brave, his actions after made him a hero. Roy Benevidez was not out to gain glory and status from his actions, nor did he ever look for pity because of his humble upbringings. Though his ancestry was Mexican-Indian and Hispanic, he always said, "I prefered to think of myself simply as an American." He had a "never say die" attitude, and strong sense of morals. He possesed neither vanity nor false modestly, and he served as an example of what one can accomplish in a lifetime. Sadly, MSG Roy Benevidez died in 1998. He truely was an American Hero! May God bless his soul.

5 out of 5 stars A True American Hero.......1999-12-22

I was privileged to know and very fortunate to have served with Roy Benavidez. His entire life was a struggle: from his difficult early years in Texas, to his incredible struggle to remain in the Army after his first tour's devastating wounds, to his amazing jump status qualification after the doctors told him he would never walk again, to his incredible heroism that resulted in the MOH (but only after another long battle with the bureaucracy that refused to acknowledge heroism at a time that the country was trying to "forget" Vietnam) and finally, the redemption that came on the White House steps with the MOH ceremony, the "last" MOH given out for Vietnam service. I am glad that Brassey's has put the book out in paperback so that kids can read about Roy and learn to never give up. God Bless You, Roy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, I could not put it down........1999-10-02

Roy Benevidez must have been an incredible person. The feelings and thoughts he shares through out the book shows that behind "The Medal" there was a very real individual. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what really goes through the mind of a hero.

Book Description

The first full portrait of one of the most enduringly mysterious public figures of our era, who played a pivotal role in our national life.

Mark Felt's role in history was secured when he decided to share his views on the Watergate break-in with a young reporter on the Washington Post named Bob Woodward. He made sure that the greatest political scandal in the twentieth century, which would bring down a Presidency, was definitively revealed.

This absorbing account of Felt's FBI career, from the end of the great American crime wave through World War II, the culture wars of the 1960s, and his conviction for his role in penetrating the Weather Underground, provides a rich historical and personal context to the "Deep Throat" chapter of his life. It also provides Felt's personal recollections of the Watergate scandal, which he wrote in 1982 and kept secret, in which he explains how he came to feel that the FBI needed a "Lone Ranger" to protect it from White House corruption. Much more than a Watergate procedural, A G-Man's Life is about life as a spy, the culture of the FBI, and the internal political struggles of mid-20th century America.

Only as he neared the end of his life did Felt confide his role in our national history to members of his family, who then shared it with their lawyer, John O'Connor. The questions "Who is Mark Felt? And why did he risk so much for his country?" are brilliantly answered in A G-Man's Life.

4 out of 5 stars The Last Watergate Book?.......2006-07-05

I've been a student of Watergate for years. Maybe in part because I was born in October 1973, and I enjoy asking people who was Vice President the day I was born (answer: no-one). Maybe also in part because ten years ago I picked up "The Haldeman Diaries" off the remainder rack at Barnes & Noble, and then started collecting all the Watergate autobiographies still in print (yes, that includes your own, Jeb Stuart Magruder).

I never really had an intelligent guess as to who Deep Throat actually was. When Mark Felt's name was released by his family last year, I finally understood why -- he's only a tangential part of the books I read, not mentioned by name in the Woodward/Bernstein books, not mentioned even in "The Haldeman Diaries" or the Oliver Stone "Nixon" movie, both of which fixated on J. Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson, Felt's immediate FBI superiors.

When I purchased "A G-Man's Life", I thought I'd bought my last Watergate book. I was wrong. This book necessarily leaves lots of questions unanswered, primarily because Felt is now essentially senile and then, according to my reading of co-author John O'Connor's portions of the back, he took no active role in the writing. "G-Man" is drawn mostly from Felt's long-forgotten FBI memoir, and supplemented by unpublished writings and interviews with family members (who learned Felt's secret only at the same time as did family friend O'Connor).

Oddly, even the unpublished writings do not acknowledge that Felt was Deep Throat (hence the odd parsing of his phrase last year, "I'm the guy they used to call Deep Throat"). O'Connor does explain this gap in two different ways: first, he points out where Felt didn't identify with the Deep Throat character portrayed in the movie; and second, he prints his speculation that Woodward's Deep Throat was a composite of which Felt was only a part. That speculation, however, is not echoed in Woodward's own "Secret Man", a book about Felt written before the public announcement.

Felt's own writing, about his rise through the FBI ranks, well reflects the fatigue of hard work with the rewards of a job well done. This is a more than adequate crime memoir, with lots of decent anecdotes along the way. The FBI is not publicly regarded the way it used to be, so "A G-Man's Life" is not only an effective period piece, but a reminder of what good a governmental organization can achieve when motivated solely by the public interest.

The toll that Felt's career took on his own family is mentioned not at all in the memoir chapters-- that is left to O'Connor to describe in the epilogue. O'Connor, whose daughter went to college with Felt's grandson, has become a family friend and is thus in the best position to write objectively about these struggles. Where Felt's own writing also seems naive in retrospect is his celebration of Hoover the man -- there are tens of thousands of pages of well-documented books offering contrary evidence -- and also in his take on the New Left, the obsession that ultimately brought down his FBI career. Whether the New Left was a Communist-infiltrated organization that actively conspired with foreign governments to overthrow the United States is not a question answered by Felt, although he does try.

The aftermath of Felt's authorization of "black bag jobs" against the Weather Underground resulted in his conviction in federal court -- after a trial in which Richard Nixon testified in his favor. Felt's principled refusal to come forward as Deep Throat in the midst of his trial postponed his receiving the accolades he so richly deserved. The question remains... was Felt's three decades of secrecy worth the wait?

5 out of 5 stars Glad Book was Written before Felt's Death - However, Wish it Could have Been Written While His Memory Was More Intact.......2006-07-04

This book gave me a much better understanding of Watergate and what went on behind the scenes. Gave me a greater respect for the FBI - but I doubt that it is now what it was then.

This book did not sugar coat Felt. He devoted his life to the FBI at the expense of neglecting his wife and children. However, he had such a drive and tenacity to fulfill his dream that his wife would most likely not have been happy with a husband who doted on her and gave up his dream. His life was full and meaningful - he truly got to live his dream.

The book gives the facts and leaves one wondering if some of the things Felt done were truly out of concern and his desire for justice to prevail; or if he was acting out of disappointment because he didn't get the position he so wanted. It was always passed on to someone else who was certainly not deserving or capable - a political choice to promote the promoter. Of course, this would be a debatable subject. I come to the conclusion though that Felt was hurt and disappointed, but that he was a man of honor and did what he felt must be done to stop the corruption and protect the people.

This book portrays an excellent picture of the great FBI leader, J Edgar Hoover. In fact, I received as much insight and knowledge about Hoover as I ddi about Felt and that was sort of an extra. We see that Hoover was like Felt, totally dedicated to his career and demanded the same from his agents.

I feel the information in this book is something that can be relied on coming from someone like Felt. I don't believe he would lie about anything that was in this book.

The things revealed about Martin Luther King, Jr. were important to me. We have heard many rumours, but considering the great opposition Dr. King went though, one always wonders if there is any truth. However, I feel now that Dr. King certainly did have sexual weaknesses that we have heard about and he did associate with the communist leaders. However, the book portrays it in an open way. Just because he was friends with them does not mean he was for the communist movement. Through reading this book, I feel he was searching for a better way of life for his people; the socialistic way is so appealing because it claims to make the common people equal. It lures and gives a false hope. This makes me even more appreciate America, though not perfect, we still have hope. But oh how we need good leadership to make it possible.

This book really makes you stop and think about some impportant issues of that time and of our time now. An eye opener if you read between the lines.

I think this book portrays Mr. Felt as unbiased, he was concerned about all people, justice for all. He tried to be fair and compassionate as portrayed early on in the book where he let the guilty wife stay with her small children as he took the husband in for robbery. This is really an insight to his inner character and I think this stayed with him through his career and life.

I think the book could have flowed a little better, at times it was hard to follow. But perhaps covering so much diversity, this was the only way. I still give it a 5, a good read.

4 out of 5 stars Helps Understand "Deep Throat".......2006-06-25

Mark Felt group up in Idaho, worked in Washington D.C. as an aide to his state's Senator while attending law school at night. Felt's first job was at the FTC, but he disliked the assignments and soon joined the FBI, where he began by checking references on those applying for federal jobs. Over the next 33 years he moved 17 times - something he didn't enjoy.

Felt soon moved to reviewing files and interviewing possible German spies; after WWII he moved to Seattle and repeated the process with potential Russian spies. Then back to D.C. (monitoring field office performance), New Orleans (tracking and apprehending fugitives), etc. Eventually it was back to D.C. as Chief Inspector.

Felt recalls conflict with Robert Kennedy, who with JFK wanted personal direction of certain investigations and to use the FBI on political enemies. Hoover resisted. Two top MLK aides had their phones tapped because they were alleged communists (JFK did not want his administration bogged down because of its support for MLK). King promised to drop one of the advisors, but instead continued, using deception. Robert Kennedy then authorized wiretaps of MLK's nome and office, in writing (per Hoover's request - he understood the political ramifications). MLK's hotel rooms were also monitored, uncovering sex affairs. MLK's unwarranted charges against the FBI led to a feud with Hoover who was also upset over the "wild sex" goings on.

Nixon's presidency brought far more problems, beginning with secret tapings per Kissinger, requests to find leakers and to investigate Daniel Schorr. Then came Watergate and Hoover's death.

Felt hoped to be appointed Director, but Patrick Gray (considered loyal to Nixon) was brought in instead, temporarily. Felt found out that Gray was informing the White House about the Watergate investigation and trying to limit its scope, but he pressed on anyway. "Life of a G-Man" asserts that Felt went to the Post reporters to prevent the investigation from being totally derailed.

Gray's permanent appointment as Director fell through when it became obvious that his constant absences and bias towards the White House were out of line. Felt again hoped to become Director, but was denied again - William Ruckelshaus was brought in from the EPA, and Felt retired.

Unfortunately, that was not the end of Felt's "FBI experience." After nearly 33 years of repeated moves, 6-7 day weeks and 12+ hour days, Carter's Attorney General Bell prosecuted Felt for having authorized five "black bag jobs" (break-ins) involving the Weathermen group. Felt was convicted and fined $5,000; then pardoned months after President Reagan came into office.

"A G-Man's Life" is a bit hard to interpret since Felt is now 90+ years old, with little memory of the events involved. His co-author reportedly pieced the book together from Felt's earlier writings and personal papers, as well as interviews with friends.

Bottom-Line: Felt was a great American public servant, though "A G-Man's Life" is less than earth-shattering.

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Life that I Wouldn't Have Wanted to Live.......2006-06-17

I give this book a high grade but with a caveat. And the caveat is that this is not relly a book on Watergate. It is a book on 'A G-Man's Life.'

This book really has several parts, any of which would make a book on their own. ==First is the introduction by John O'Connor. This covers Mr. Felt's role in Watergate, the relationship with Woodward, and particularily the decision to become public.

Second is a history of being in the FBI. Mr. Felt entered the FBI in January 1942, just in time for the counter spy efforts of World War II. He went on to spend thirty years as an agent.

Then there is the story of the witch hunts that the Government was going through as part of Watergate and it's aftermath. During this time he was tried and found guilty of making 'black bag jobs.' He had made them, but was doing so in what he felt was the best interest of the country's fight against terrorism. He was pardoned by the President.

All in all, a most interesting book that presents a slightly different view than that of Woodward's 'The Secret Man.'

5 out of 5 stars Loyalty, tragedy and the importance of an independent FBI.......2006-06-11

John O'Connor writes a clear and compelling story about a man who spent his life being Hoover's ideal G-Man, smart, hard-working and above all loyal; a public servant dedicated to getting the bad-guys who threatened America's citizens, values and democracy. He fought the Mafia, the Ku Klux Klan, and the Weathermen. He also fought Nixon's attempts to make the FBI the President's enforcer by exposing Nixon's efforts to quash the Watergate investigation. His tireless dedication alienated him from his family and ultimately led to his being disgraced by a politicized Justice Department bent on revenge. It is important to understand the potential consequences of an FBI headed by a political appointee assigned to do the President's bidding. Ann S.

Book Description

Who would solve one of the most perplexing scientific problems of all time?

This dramatic picture-book biography brings to life – with illustrations that glow with wit and inspiration – the fascinating story of the quest to measure longitude. While the scientific establishment of the eighteenth century was certain that the answer lay in mapping the heavens, John Harrison, an obscure, uneducated clockmaker, dared to imagine a different solution: a seafaring clock. How Harrison held fast to his vision and dedicated his life to the creation of a small jewel of a timepiece that would change the world is a compelling story – as well as a memorable piece of history, science, and biography.

It was a good book, but I have read better books and worst books. It made me want to go to London to see the clocks that John Harrisson made.

I would recommend it for people who want to know about history but don't like reading long books.

5 out of 5 stars Good for Men's Bible Study.......2000-03-31

A men's group from our church used this book as a basis for our bible study. If you know of a men's bible study looking for a good book, I would highly suggest this one.

5 out of 5 stars Tough Read - But Excellent Book.......1999-11-29

This book is one of the most challenging I have read on measuring myself against the word of God. It is sometime difficult to hold a mirror up and see what you really look like and then compare that to the image God has planned for us.

But the good news is that being a Man of Honor is about who you are today and who you will be tomorrow--not who you were yesterday.

Dr. Ray Pritchard does an excellent job in this book and I highly recommend it to all men who want to be challenged beyond complacency.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent study of Godly character in men.......1999-10-05

I truly enjoyed this book, and consider it a first-rate study of the qualities that embody a Godly man. The book is based on Scripture but also features modern examples of Godly men in today's world. Women will benefit from this book as well.
