5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-08-03

I have read all of LA Banks books in the VHL series and have loved each and every one of them, but this book was off the hook. I got goosebumps reading this book when she started talking about scenes in Revelation. Just AWESOME. A very good read.

5 out of 5 stars Explosive!.......2007-07-19

As usual, L.A. Banks does not let me down with The Wicked. I've read all 7 VHL books. She hits all the high marks in this one. It's explosive, otherworldly, dark, and filled with words and geographic regions that will send you running to your BIG dictionary searching for meanings. Never mind, read on and you'll understand. Gripped by this book, it was a constant companion to my purse--I couldn't leave home without it. Her cast of interracial characters is typical L.A. Banks writing style. And the war scenes will--to borrow her phase--knock your head back. I'm obsessed and ready for the next one, Ms. Banks. This book deserves 5-plus stars.

5 out of 5 stars Dont want to tell it all..........2007-06-25

Okay so I am definitely a huge fan of L.A. Banks and this book is no exception. In this selection she brings Cain into the mix and it makes for an interesting plot twist. He is in love with Damali and from the first page of the book you see just how twisted his love for her can be. But Damali and Carlos are finally getting their honeymoon but inevitably something happens that brings their mood down and the book begins. That is all I am going to delve into but trust me I am a faithful reader of the series and this is a book, series that you want to get into. So for first time readers you will be lost if you start up now but for faithful readers get ready for a great sit down read.

5 out of 5 stars Keep em comin'!!!.......2007-06-04

I love this series and this book was on hit! L.A. Banks is doing it with each novel she comes out with in the Vampire Huntress series. I sssooo would love to see this as a series or a mini-series. The philosophies and theologies are so complex, I don't know how they'd be able to do the series justice in a screenplay. I look forward to each installment in the series, but I so dread the day it all ends.

L.A. Banks is the best! This is definitely a must read and one book I could not put down until I was done. Damali and Carlos is a force to be reckoned with. This book and The Hunted are right now my favorite in the Vampire Huntress Legend. For those that have not read this series I strongly suggest that you do.

5 out of 5 stars Different twist.......2007-01-16

I enjoyed this book. It was refreshingly different. Each story follows the good vs. evil theme, yet maintains an individuality that is uncommon in a series. I was fascinated with the concept of seven levels of heaven and hell.

first off im 19.....and this book is hott...U could really feel tha love between Damali and Carlos...and it aint no cheesy kind of love either....Who knew vampires could love so deeply and with so much passion and the "good"parts(if ya get what im saying) are just as real none of that corney romance novel stuff....real passion thats makes u almost drop a fang yourself and offer ur neck 4 carlos.....Carlos may be only a character but he is sexylol it did seem like the book slow down in the middle but u could still feel and really "get" what the characters were going through....Dare u 2 read and not be turn on....

1 out of 5 stars Wow..........2006-09-14

This book is terrible. I couldn't force myself to finish it and I read just about anything. The sheer amount of slang used in this book is overwhelming. I could feel my IQ dropping as I slogged through page after page. The story feels so flimsy and is not written well. I found my eyes still moving over the page but nothing was registering. It was really terrible. Please save your money, there are so many other authors out there that can really write and sell a good fantasy book. This just is not one of them...

5 out of 5 stars Take It As It Is.......2006-05-24

LA Banks brings the heat again bringing back the characters from her beloved Minion book which started the series that we know as the Vampire Huntress Legend. Damali has been compromised while Carlos attempts to remain true to her and all that she stands for.

Damali Richards is known as the Millennium Neteru but is in love with a man of the dark side she will do everything to be by his side even if it means turn into what he is to continue loving him the way they love each other but not before she shows his type who she is really and what she really can do. Damali never thought she would see herself flux as hard as she did but when she finds herself surround by dark energy and having to do what it takes to survive Damali throws all precautions to the wind and takes in all that she knows to make her power plays and to remind everyone of what the Rivera's mean and what they stand for.

Carlos Rivera has loved Damali all of his adulthood and even decided that if necessary he would give her up to allow her to live a normal life but when things begin to take form he finds himself sitting between a rock and a hard place with decisions needing to be made and choices having to be dealt with he is willing to do everything to allow her to continue her safe journey and to do what she does and that's protect the living world. Carlos isn't sure what to do with Damali she is a force to reckon for but he will do everything within his willpower to keep her safe and to maintain his power to allow him to be what is he is but he knows he is willing to risk it all to keep Damali safe.

Carlos and Damali go on the adventure of their lives as they do everything necessary to protect their family and those who have become important but will it be enough to save everyone and to make sure everyone makes it to where they are suppose to go and where they are suppose to be. Continue to keep reading The Vampire Huntress Series as LA Banks brings the flavor that only Damali and Carlos could present.

Product Description

New York Times bestselling author Laurell K. Hamilton brings Anita Blake to the world of graphic novels. Anita Blake lives in a world where vampires, zombies and werewolves have been declared legal citizens of the United States. Anita Blake is an "animator" - a profession that involves raising the dead for mourning relatives. But Anita is also known as a fearsome hunter of criminal vampires, and she's often employed to investigate cases that are far too much for conventional police. But as Anita gains the attention of the vampire masters of her hometown of St. Louis, she also risks revealing an intriguing secret about herself - the source of her unusual strength and power. This hardcover edition contains an all-new, original, never-before-published short story by Laurell K Hamilton.

2 out of 5 stars Fails to rise.......2007-09-16

I love the current boom of modern vampire novels, but I am not a fan of Laurell K. Hamilton's perky, Nike-clad heroine, Anita Blake. I read the first several novels in Hamilton's long-running series years ago and just couldn't get past her repetitive style of writing, her tiresome placement of Nike endorsements or growing passion for soft-core pornography. At the heart of the Blake series, I believe, is a good collection of stories, but while Hamilton may be a good storyteller, she's not a very good novelist; somewhere between her original ideas and the printed page, the story gets buried in bad writing.

But, while I could no longer force myself to slog through Hamilton's increasingly long and sexually-driven books, I had high hopes for the new graphic adaptation by Marvel Comics. With the text whittled down to its essentials, filtered through the pen of an adaptor and enhanced by colorful visuals, the story might find a better voice.

Unfortunately not. While adaptors Stacie Ritchie and Jess Ruffner have retained the essence of the original text, the resulting tale is cluttered, rushed and often confusing. Brett Booth's art falls just short of being beautiful, too -- but with Anita's lips pumped full of collagen, hair threatening to rival Medusa's for invasive animation and thighs that put a running back's to shame, it's just too damn distracting to help move the story along. All of Booth's women have football-player thighs, actually, and many of his men can be separated from one another only because of their differing hairstyles.

I'm afraid Anita Blake still pales in comparison to many of the vampire-themed heroines storming the literary stage these days. This adaptation is unable to lift her above her creator's limitations.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Artwork!.......2007-09-09

I haven't read any of Hamilton's novels, but this graphic novel was exceptionally good. It had a wonderful storyline that keeps you turning pages and the artwork was better than most current comics. As overplayed as the entire vampire genre is, this story had enough unique traits to keep it interesting. The only disappointment is finishing the book and not knowing how the story ends... maybe I should start reading the novels to find out.

5 out of 5 stars I love it!!.......2007-09-05

The comic book is fantastic. I absolutely love all the novels and have all of them and I couldn't wait to get the Vol. 1 comic book. The pages are vey colorful and the artist did a great job. Also in between the "chapters" - divisions between released comics - the posters (page size) that were released are there. The book has comics 1-6 and a mini new comic at the end. If you love Anita Blake books atleast before they got very amorous you have got to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Absofanbloodytastic!.......2007-09-01

Anita Blake graphic novel vol 1 is awesome! I am seriously glad that i bought this book, it's quality in graphics is amazing and to have the first six volumes of the comics bound into one volume is great, theres the continuity of reading that you can't get with comics. The bonus story is great for back story on Anita, but i think it needed some more depth to it personally. But it is well worth the money for those die hard Laurell.K fans such as myself.

5 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasures.......2007-08-27

This is the first Laurell Hamilton book I ever read, it hooked me and I have read everything she has written except for the last one. I must say however that if erotic fiction is not your thing leave this one alone, as the character evolved the books became quite graphic and significant to the character. She also has a fairie line which I have also read, like them all and can't wait for more to arrive.

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-31

Mia Snow is a top cop with the Alien Investigation and Removal unit. She runs around dealing with illegal immigrants from a long way away, and extreme violence is good when it is necessary.

A partner is critically injured and she ends up in a relationship of sorts with an alien that reveals something about who she actually is, and why she can do what she can do better than other humans.

5 out of 5 stars Fussy Woman Gets Her Man - er - Alien.......2007-07-02

Strong female characters attract my attention, so I was drawn to Awaken Me Darkly by the foreboding Mia Snow. But what made me lay my money on the counter to buy the book was the description of Dallas Gutierrez set as a teaser in the front of my edition. Good Lord. Give me a partner like that any day of the week. Mia who? Oh, is that little girl going to factor into this story? That's nice...get back to Dallas...

So you can imagine how upset I was when Dallas got injured (great foreshadowing and leading into that on Gena Showalter's part, by the way), but the novel didn't just leave me disappointed there. Mia continued working with her other partners (even though some of that felt contrived, but, hey, when you've only got 306 pages, what's a writer to do?) and fighting for Dallas's life and working to rid society of evil bad guys. Now, I expected Mia to save Dallas, sacrificing herself in some way in the process, and end up sweating up the sheets with him. So imagine my surprise when Dallas remained impotently in a hospital bed while the alien huntress alternately beat up and slept with his enemy. Somehow, the talented Ms. Gena Showalter brought it all together with a satisfying ending. Wonderfully.

That's a gifted storyteller.

1 out of 5 stars is brutality equality?...........2007-06-13

LJ Lewis' review below pretty much sums up how I feel about this book as well.

I found this book a rehash of the whole "tough cookie" heroine and not in a good way. The behavior of the heroine, Mia, is brutal and off putting.

The storyline is that the Alien Hunters have complete authority over all Alien species, judge, jury and executioner. In just the first 100 pages alone you see the heroine committing various forms of police harassment and brutality, all the while thinking to herself how much she dislikes most Aliens. And she's supposed to fall in love with an Alien? Is this supposed to be enjoyable?

If this was a male lead I would consider him a villain-and I consider Mia Snow one equally. At one point she tells a suspect "you know I have no conscience" and I agree.

When did equality mean to be equally brutal?

0 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-06-12

This book features a kick-butt heroine, which is something that I love in books. She doesn't take crap from anyone (or anything). The romance is nice but doesn't overwhelm the plot. Looking forward to the next title in this series.

5 out of 5 stars enjoy a good book.......2007-02-04

Whats not to like? You have adventure in a future Earth with lots of aliens, a beautiful woman with deadly fighting skills (she enjoys fighting), an awsome alien who loves her, along with bad guy & good guys and a big secret she uncovers that changes her life. People who like this type of stuff will also enjoy reading this book.

In fiction, film, and TV, vampires are a dominant trend of the young millennium. Is it is because the blood-suckers are a perfect metaphor for corrupt politicians and corporate executives? Because alternative sexualities are gaining acceptance? Because the idea of living forever (even if undead) is so alluring? The reasons are unclear. What is clear is that the hottest subgenre (in both popularity and sensuality) is the vampire-huntress subgenre, thanks to Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter and Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. With L.A. Banks's debut novel, Minion, a tough, sexy new vampire huntress challenges the dominance of Anita Blake and Buffy.

Damali Richards is a rising star of Warriors of Light Records--but her fans would never guess that she is also the most important vampire hunter in a millennium. However, unfortunately for the inexperienced young huntress, the vampires and demons have both discovered her existence. An age-old war escalates to unprecedented heights of violence as the dark forces strive to slay Damali before she comes of age and gains her full powers.

Damali is an appealing heroine, the concept is intriguing, and the series is promising. However, the first novel is rocky. Damali is a vampire-killing martial artist, and Minion presents an epic struggle between good and evil, yet the novel neglects to include a climactic battle between Damali and the bad guys (or much of a climax at all; a sequel is obviously forthcoming). Another problem is that Damali's teacher withholds crucial information from not only the huntress, but also her guardians, who should have learned everything many years ago. In contrast, the characters frequently tell each other things they already know. Readers craving the twisted erotic charge of the Anita Blake novels or the Buffy-Spike relationship may be dissatisfied that sexual tension is less important to Minion; and readers seeking Hamiltonian melodrama may also be disappointed. --Cynthia Ward

1 out of 5 stars Buffy knock off.......2007-10-02

I'll keep this short and to the point. This book is nothing more than a Buffy knockoff. A very bad Buffy knock off. As another reviewer stated, "Buffy in the Hood" with really bad writing. I got tired of always reading about the characters giving each other a pound on the fist...like they did on page 9, page 15...page 35. Oh and again on page 50. Then on page 60. And yet again on page 103. Don't forget the fist pounding on page 169 and 209. I could go on but I think you get the idea. Fist pounding ad nauseum.

4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

This is a little like a cross between Guy N. Smith's Sabat, and Angel. A hip, urban vampire sort of thing, with gangsters and nightclubs etc.

The woman in question is a Neteru, a superhuman with a mission : fanger-finishing off. She has a crew to help that know about her, an old almost-boyfriend that becomes involve with the vampire rulers and will become bait, and some good monster hunting scenes.

While the cover etc. seems to fit it into the whole romance thing, that isn't that large an element, any more than a detective book or thriller with a female lead, really.

Some of it might be a touch clunky on setup, particularly some of the crew trying to be cool, but as a quick action book, nothing wrong with this, and I wouldn't be averse to looking at others.

3 out of 5 stars Slow start..........2007-07-09

It's OK...This book started off slow but then picked up a bit in the middle. Not sure if it picked up enough to keep me reading though.

3 out of 5 stars An extended prologue...........2007-06-23

I steered clear of this series for a while because the first book didn't sound like an interesting read from the publisher's description or from reader reviews. Since I didn't go in with a lot of expectations, I wasn't that shocked with my initial lack of interest in the book. To be honest, after reading a third of the way through I was tempted to take the book back to the book store for a refund. The story plot is pretty weak, though once you get past the first book, a plot does begin to coalesce in the other books. While it does set the stage for the future installments, its flow is very choppy and the use of Ebonics does not help. Each character is raggedly fleshed out but not well enough to either empathize or relate to any of them.

However, I still gave it 3 stars because, all previous criticisms aside, it still showed promise of developing into something better. The author's ethnic flavor on the well-worn vampire theme was off the beaten path in verbatim and prose. Many readers typically associate the vampire story from a Euro-centric perspective, understandably. Looking beyond the African American flavor, the author, her story, and her writing style were a refreshing change from my other authors, i.e. Anne Rice, Kelley Armstrong, and Laurell K. Hamilton. I look forward to the next installments.

4 out of 5 stars introduction to a great series.......2007-05-31

Ok, this book isn't the best but once you read The Awakening it all starts to pick up. Looking back this book is more of an introduction to the characters and how they all came together to be a family. We also get the introduction to Carlos. The second book picks up and is a fantastic read but i do suggest you read this granted it is a slow start but it will fill in any blanks for book 2.

Book Description

Eden Black walks among humans, protecting them from the murderous evil of other-worlders who abduct and enslave. And though she appears to be human herself, Eden is an alien, a Raka, distinguished by her golden hair and skin, and gifted with the ominous ability to kill without remorse -- and with total accuracy. That is, until the fateful night she has one shot to eliminate her target, a human slaver -- and misses.

"Failure" is not in Eden's vocabulary. Neither is "partner" -- but that's what she is forcibly assigned after recovering from her disastrous mission. A sexy, steely-nerved human agent, Lucius Adaire enjoys nothing more than sparking the fury -- and rousing the desire -- of the fiery female assassin too proud to admit defeat. Locked in an assignment they cannot afford to lose, Lucius and Eden find themselves bound in two high-stakes, heart-pounding games: the sensual web of kill or be killed, and the erotic dance of seduction.

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-02-01

I liked Awaken Me Darkly but this one I loved even more! I felt more of a bond with Eden perhaps, because she was humanized a little more. I love the imaginary world of Gena Showalter's. I can easily imagine the characters and their interactions with one another.

Eden Black is sexy with golden hair and skin. She is a Raka. They are known to be a peaceful race. Their race is usually hunted down and their hair and skin sold for money. Her parents were murdered right in front of her. Michael Black, the head of the agency, raises Eden as his own. Eden always feels that she has to prove something so, she would not be viewed as a spoiled brat. Her father is overprotective over her and she is trying to win his praise. Eden turns from her peace loving heritage and relies more on her assassin training skills. She is extremely aggressive and strong. I love a strong female character.

Lucius enters the picture. After Eden botches a major hit, she has to accept a partner. Lucius refuses to let Eden control, win, or work independently. He forces her into training and does not sugar coat (couldn't resist!) it for her. The only problem is that Eden is turned on by his appearance and his obnoxious attitude.

The interactions are interesting and true to the characters' natures. I was sorry the book ended. Gena Showalter mentioned in this book that her new book, Savor Me Slowly when have both Mia Snow and Eden Black in it and their men. I cannot wait! What a great fantasy adventure book!

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-01-24

I liked this one even more than the previous book in the series. I thought the play between the two main characters funny and endearing. Eden is a otherworlder and an assassin of otherworlders (the bad guys). She was brought up by a man who heads a group of assassins and took her away after her parents were viciously murdered. The story beings with Eden on assignment (one that she fails). When she recovers from injuries her father puts her back to complete the assignment, only she has to agree to having a partner--enter Lucius. Lucius is very sexy, very mysterious, and very interested.

I was glued to this book for two nights until I finished it. I truly hope Showalter doesn't wait too long before she puts out another book in this series. Especially if the next one is at least as good as this one.

5 out of 5 stars Enslave Me Sweetly.......2006-09-01

I thought it was great! I enjoyed this book just as much as the first edition to this series. I read it in two settings-only because I needed to sleep. Gena Showalter has a way to make the imagined believable. A very refreshingly different escape from everyday realism, to the world of Gena!

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-08-13

It's a good read. I just like my series to tie together in characters a bit more. The over all story is good with good sex but just not what the first one was.

5 out of 5 stars The best Gena Showalter yet!.......2006-08-04

I really enjoyed this new Gena Showalter novel! Her characters were complex and interesting, something often missing from romance novels, and they had great chemistry with each other. The basic premise of this book is Agent Eden Black screws up one of her missions, to kill an alien who is illegally trafficing human slaves to other planets, and although her boss (and father) allows her to try and remedy her mistake, she must do so with the help of a partner. Adgent "Luscious" is deadly, not to mention sexy, and he is the LAST thing Eden wants to deal with when she is trying to fix her mistake. The ins and outs of their relationship, both personal and professional, not to mention the daring plan they develop to trap the bad guy makes for a fantastic, fast read. I read it in one sitting and I cant wait for the next installment in the Alien Huntress series!

5 out of 5 stars So worth your time.......2007-10-07

Where should I start with L.A Banks vampire huntress series, well I must say the Minion was the introduction to the series was not bad,was no page turner same goes for the Awakeing. If these two books won't important to the series I would say skip It. Now the Hunted Is the book you want to read and from there Is where the real action starts you can't finish It fast enough to start the others. These books are so worth your reading time minus the Minion and the Awakeing.

3 out of 5 stars Nice story, but..........2007-07-02

My friend recommended this book to me. I love Vampire tales and I was very excited to find a series written by an Black author. My library didn't have the first two books, so I dove into the "The Hunted."

Well, I'll start off with saying that I didn't finish the book. Here's why:

Even though I enjoyed some of the fight scenes, they seemed sort of unrealistic. I just couldn't get into them and for some reason it seemed as if the author left something out.

I enjoyed reading the story through Carlos' point of view. I found myself skipping over the Huntress' (I can't remember her name. For Shame!) parts of the story. Like some of the other readers, I was a little displeased by the use of slang. It just seemed strained to me. Like the characters were trying so hard to sound real and natural, that the result was completely unnatural and fake. However, from the parts I read, Carlos' part was so much better. Everything from his speech patterned and the general writing seemed much better. I began to wish he was the lead character so I can see how his side of the story ended. But, since I skipped around so much, I just gave up and dropped the book off at the library.

But, I did like some things about the book. I did like how her version of vampire politics and structure. It wasn't my favorite, but it did well for the story.

3 out of 5 stars [3.5]--You'll love some passionately and hate others intensely.......2007-04-04

Again, Ms. Banks has created an outstanding work of fiction. The Hunted is another great installment to this series. A slightly more bulkier novel but it is surprisingly a fast and tense read. Due to real life, I was forced to put the book down, and each time I did--no matter where I had closed the pages--I was left on the edge of a cliff, my attention focused on the next time I would be able to read this book. She is able to bring her own unique spin to the vampire mythos to fruition with "The Hunted."

This book was sexier, darker and grittier; finally allowing the passion between Damali and Carlos to explode in one of the best love scenes I've ever had a chance to read; upping the ante on Carlos' "life" and his deals; exposing more of the Neteru's heritage; and upping the tension between Damali and Carlos, Carlos and his enemies, The guardians and their chosen paths; etc, etc. The Hunted has taken Banks' series to an entirely different level where your emotions will be sure to run like a predator, unless you are dead. Damali is near to coming into her own; in this novel, she being forced to deal with things and situations that she formerly shielded herself from due to certain circumstances. She is all Neteru in this book and I can't wait until I read "The Bitten."

Once again, however, the dialogue is the major sticking point for me. While it's dynamic and true to life, I find it a bit tedious after a while and hard to follow when more than one character is "speaking". To me, there is very little in the way of personalization and uniqueness to the characters with regards to the dialogue.

But, overall, I admire Ms. Banks' contributions to vampire fiction and look forward to many more great books in the Vampire Huntress series.

1 out of 5 stars terrible writen book and book.......2007-03-19

I really was disappointed in this book and author. I nver read L.A. Banks before and thought I give it a try. The cover captured my attention...once again people don't let the cover fool you...thought I learned from prior bad books with nice covers. I DID NOT UNDERSTAND MOST OF THIS BOOK AT ALL. I AM NOT FLUENT IN BLACK SLANG. L.A. BANKS SHOULD OF WRITEN THIS BOOK IN PROPER ENGLISH AND NOT SLANG THEN THE BOOK WOULD OF BEEN OK. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE AT ALL. I HAD TO SKIP THROUGHT THE ENTIRE BOOK AND GET THE TORTURE OVER WITH QUICKLY! I WAS SO LOST,I KEPT SAYING TO MYSELF WHAT IS SHE TALKING ABOUT! I DO NOT LIKE TO READ SLANG BOOKS AND WISH BLACK AUTHORS WOULD WRITE GOOD BOOKS IN PROPER ENGLISH AND NOT SLANGGGG! I WILL NEVER READ HER AGAIN. I REALLY TRIED TO AND GAVE HER A CHANCE BUT I JUST COULD NOT UNDERSTAND HER WRITING AND THE WHOLE BOOK. THAT IS IT FOR ME

5 out of 5 stars Great continuance of a great series.......2007-01-05

Of course I love reading "The Hunted" by L.A.Banks over and over again simply for the fact that I love her books. Her Vampire Huntress Legends series is outstanding and I recommend that everyone of every ethnic read these books because they expound on historical facts and symbols of importance that I believe everyone can relate to. If you don't read this book you'll lose out.

5 out of 5 stars Vivid Story written to excite and question choices........2007-09-28

I am enjoying the whole series I am now reading The Cursed and sad because I have to wait until next year before continuing the Journey of the Neteru's and thier Guardians. Keep writting and I will keep reading.
God Bless.

3 out of 5 stars Didn't do for me what the other books did!.......2007-06-19

I have read all of L.A. Banks Vampire Huntress books and have loved them all! I love her story telling, her characters, her fight between light and dark, but I did not feel that way about this book. For me, there was too much preaching, too much talking and not enough action. Parts were poignant, but parts were down right boring. This is the first book of this series that I just didn't get into. However, that will not stop me from buying the next one, the Wicked.

3 out of 5 stars For God's sake Damali...SHUT UP!.......2007-02-21

If Damali would ONLY shut up! Could any author possibly write worse dialog? I doubt it. Don't get me wrong, the action and sex in the books are great, but when Damali starts that crap about her music, her wants and desires, the men, the other people in her camp, and when she starts that crap with Marlene...well, just skip a couple of pages. You won't miss anything. BORING! Then Marlene starts her Jemima talkin' Whoo girfrin! Oh, Lawdy. The absolute indignity. Give us the Devil, Carlos, The Chairman, Lilith, Yonnie...and kill EVERYBODY else off. Please!

5 out of 5 stars Kudos to L. A. Banks!!!.......2007-01-09

I've been so taken by the characters in this series that I've read every book and can't wait until the next installment in February 2007. It keeps the readers in the present time with real time issues and problems while taking on certain biblical aspects. A must read for suspense and thriller readers!

5 out of 5 stars You must read this book!!!.......2007-01-05

I love reading any book by L.A.Banks because she is an African American woman who loves to surprise her readers with something new. Even though "The Forsaken" is a part of her Vampire Huntress Legends series, this book completely takes you by surprise. It has the same characters as the previous books of the series but she introduces someone new that you'd never think of. You must read this book to understand what I'm talking about.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first.......2007-05-31

After reading Minion I wanted to read the next instalment however I never thought The Awakening was going to be this good. I have just ordered the next book and can't wait. Damali is getting stronger and i love that we get to see her develop into a strong independant woman from the start. I also love how the Carlos factor is panning out - can't wait to see how it all unfolds. Fantastic read. Leaves you dying for more.

4 out of 5 stars The awakening is on fire.......2007-03-11

Wow! Not only does this story have great vampire fight scenes, but the characters' interaction and conflicts are intriguing. "The Awakening" is the second installment of the Vampire Huntress saga and I'm just getting started. I enjoyed "Minion," but I LOVED "The Awakening." The battle between good & evil, laced with the deadly romantic attraction between Neteru and Master Vampire was intoxicating.

We have Damali, Neteru, who is coming onto her own. Her birthday is nearing and so is her vulnerability to the master vampires stalking the Earth. Every demonic creature imaginable is aware of this historical event, but only the vampires have the ability to use it to their evil advantage. Carlos and Damali have always shared a bond, an attraction. Carlos always felt the need to protect Damali...kind of like her guardians. But when opportunity presents itself, can the softhearted drug lord resist. Carlos gets caught up in something that even his arrogant street-wise character can't reverse. The Vampires approach Carlos with a lucrative offer. His decision and actions thereafter can shift the balance between good and evil.

I sat in awe reading this book. I'm a big vampire fan, and the urban spin that Banks weaves into this series mesmerizes me. . I love Carlos. In my opinion, he is the most interesting character. Within him is the ultimate struggle between good and evil. The relationship between Damali and him is so moving.

Banks knows her occult lore and designs some of her own theories to explain the unexplainable. I love her descriptions of the layers of Hell, and the central idea that what you send out is returned to you. Unlike Anita Blake, who says she is a Christian, but we never see her beliefs as a part of her. Damali's deeply rooted beliefs are what make her an ideal vampire huntress. She understands evil, because she truly believes in the ultimate good. Banks delivered constant action, mental stimulation, and tweaked every human sense available. When you pick "The Awakening" up to read, tap off enough time to complete it because once you pick it up, you won't put it back down.

5 out of 5 stars AY PAPI!!!.......2007-01-26

I forgot how great this book really was until I just finished re-reading it today (started this morning!) Yeah, Damali is hot and Carlos??? WHEW! That boy!! Excuse me... MAN!!! He's incredible! Banks sure knows how to dream up a man that would make any woman melt!

but seriously tho, its a beautiful story and since I already know the changes Carlos goes through I respect him all the more knowing where he came from. Its a hard hitting story about a man and a woman who come from some of the exact same places and situations that some of us come from! Its easy to relate and fall in love with the characters because their our brothers, our sisters, our mothers and fathers. Not tryin to be corny but they are us! Any and all could relate.

I know some wouldn't agree with me but I think more young people should read this book and the rest in the series to know what love can be and why its SO worth waiting for. "Ask me how I know."

4 out of 5 stars This book lets you know that the series is a winner.......2006-09-05

I was not that thrilled with the first book in this series. " The Minion". I didn't think it got good until about three quarters into the book. The same can not be said for book 2. This book from the beginning held my interest and it ended with me wanting the 3rd book right away. if you like vampire stories with an unsual slant and or if you like books written by and about people of color than this is the series for you. Every body else who wrote a review told you what the story is about, so I won't go there. I will simply say that this book does not dissapoint. I really enjoyed it.

4 out of 5 stars This Thing Called Love.......2006-05-24

LA Banks has returned with the Vampire Huntress Legend with her second book as she proceeds to take us on the adventure of a lifetime as a Neteru finds her way as a vampire huntress and a spoken word artist and Carlos Rivera figures out what he really wants.

Damali love for Carlos never fails but as each of them comes into their own they learn who they really are but would destiny really bring them so close to only let them fail. Three different sides want Damali for she is the key to keep the balance of good and evil. But each one has pulled Carlos Rivera into the mix for they all know that he can get her to do things with him with willingness but will Carlos go as far as to turn her over to them when his love for her is ever so strong.

When Damali finds her self team up with Carlos and the Covenant to take out a master vampire she doesn't know what to expect but she does know that she still love Carlos and that he must not be left behind but with the power of darkness upon him he can do everything but fight with him as he proceeds to try and protect her from his kind and those of darkness but will Damali let him do it without putting up an argument or letting her love for him put her in danger.

Be sure to continue reading LA Banks Vampire Huntress Series as she continues to bring us more on the light and dark fight and the love that stands between Carlos and Damali.

Book Description

Lilith, the consort of the Unnamed One, has released the Damned, tortured souls from all levels of Hell, to walk the streets as the living dead. A dark chaos leaks onto Earth, taking the form of a deadly contagion that not even the Neteru team can handle. One touch from these deadly creatures infects a human, driving him to madness, death...and worse. This time, Damali Richards, the Vampire Huntress (aka the millennium Neteru), Carlos, and the Guardians cannot effectively close ranks. The infection spreads to key team members and threatens to wipe out the entire squad. Even the Covenant is infected. They must track down the Chairman before members of the Neteru-Guardian team are lost and the team implodes. The only antidote is to behead Lilith. But first they must find her.

5 out of 5 stars When Hell freezes over.......2007-02-09

Prologue: The two Neterus have come full circle. Damali's destiny has been magnified, Carlos has reached his acme, and they have married. For seven days, Eve's son Cain has been agonizing over the haunting scent of the ripening Neteru and grieving her marriage. His throne in the Land of Nod is decimated, he is teetering on the brink of insanity, and his rage has no bound.

Cain crosses the ice slicked bridge, in the seventh level of Hell leading to the Vampire Council Chambers; he has come to claim his throne. He is immediately enraged as he reads the last name etched on the black marble back: 'Carlos Rivera'. Once the throne is re-captured, Cain wants to sire, and is hell bent on claiming Damali. Lilith, consort to the Un-Named One, finally has a male Neteru on the Chairman's throne and ever the treacherous vixen, has made herself his ally.

Issues: Before Carlos and Damali wed, Damali welcomed a 'throat nick,' laced with seduction from Cain, now there is a DNA connection between the three and the marriage could be annulled. For maybe the first time in his life, Carlos is sobered. Payback is a mother! But there's no time for personal recriminations, the team must be readied for the war of wars, one that will include one of their fiercest nemeses. When Cain descended to the bowels of hell, Eve's spirit went cold, all reproduction ceased, but not before Damali was caught in an abyss. The Queens have orders from on high to back away from Damali until they know she has not compromised the Gates of Heaven. Carlos is a marked man and must extend beyond everything he has learned. Cain wages war, the team is fatally wounded and key guardians are fluxing.

Without warning THE WICKED captures the imagination as Banks takes readers from Nod, to the Vampire Chambers, to topside, to the Council of the Kings and Queens in one cataclysmic swoop. Banks shows no mercy on the mental faculties of the characters or readers. Before either can catch their collective breaths, they are in demon battles with no time for strategy. Adjectives to encompass how THE WICKED imprisoned me are diminishing as this series grows to `battle bulk' proportions.

1 out of 5 stars Ghetto Talk.......2007-01-24

Maybe I am too old for this book, granted, I didn't read the first in the series, and apparently, this is one of those series where you need to read them in consecutive order, but I can't get past page 30. I must be too old, I need a dictionary to understand all the ghetto talk, I spend more time translating the ghetto talk to older person talk to really get into the book. I guess I am not the 20-something that this series is aimed at. I am wondering if it was written in modern English if I could read more of it, even if I haven't read the previous installments in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Always entertaining, never disappointing.......2007-01-18

In this next saga of the Vampire Huntress series, Damali, Carlos and her Guardian team are again, up against Lilith and the Chairman. Their mission is to retrieve the Book of the Damned and behead the Chairman. All the other reviews have described the plot to this book, so I will only say L.A. Bank's books are always captivating. I cannot say enough good things about her writing. I find her books mesmerizing. After every book in her series, when I have finished each book, I am always left with a wondeful feeling of awe. If you haven't read this series, you are truly missing out. The reason I gave this book four instead of five stars, was this book didn't seem to have as much action as the others. A lot of time was spent on the internal struggles within the Guardian team. I have the Forsaken yet to read and will be buying her next book, The Wicked. Read this series, you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Thinks are Really heating up in this series.......2006-07-06

In "The damned" things really heat up for Damali and her Guardian team. Hell Goes on the offensive in this one and nothing will be the same when its over. This is a must read if you into the Vampire Huntress Series or love a good thriller.
Enjoy and STAY IN THE LIGHT!!!

4 out of 5 stars LOVING THIS SERIES!!!.......2006-04-10

Chaos abounds in the latest in the fabulous L.A. Banks vampire huntress series. The portals of hell have been opened...and the result are demons walking Earth, resulting in murderous behavior of the most heinous kind. The Damned, released by Lilith, are spreading their infection simply by touch. Even the Guardians are affected, albeit to a lesser degree; the "thrill is gone" from Damali and Carlos's relationship, and the tension rises when Damali finds herself thinking of Jose in the physical sense, and there is serious distrust throughout the Guardian team...especially between the Neterus. In order to stop the pandemic, the Guardians must find and behead both Lilith and the Chairman...and Carlos must retrieve the Book of the Damned and return it to the Light....before souls everywhere, including Guardian souls, are lost forever.
Never one to disappoint, Banks has delivered another winner in her series....anxiously awaiting The Forsaken.
