Comprehensive and Useful Reference Test.......2007-07-11
The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church is without question a de-facto standard text for study in medieval history, church history, or any of the myriad of related topics which fall along such themes. A massive, comprehensive volume that has been put through three major revision editions over some 50 years, the book represents a modern day "summa" that more than admirably fulfills its purpose as a research and reference text. Entries in the dictionary are comprehensive to the point that one wonders why the word "dictionary" rather than "encyclopedia" was chosen for its title, but that oddity is of little concern to us. Looking up a term in the text is just the start of an exploration of the rich and detailed information that the volume contains.
For example, let's say we wish to study scholasticism. In looking up the term, we don't just find a definition of the term as we might expect with a typical dictionary, but we instead find a detailed, expansive description that presents the context of scholasticism's, its rise in the medieval university, the pivotal roles of Abelard and Anselm in its development, its connection with the medieval investigation of the notion of "universals," and even its roots in the writings of Porphyry's discussions of genus and species in the 3rd century AD. For each of the key terms that arise in the scholasticism entry, we are pointed also to each of their own specific entries within the dictionary so that we can further explore the topic to any desired level. In the case of scholasticism here, we end up with a generally comprehensive introductory notion of the concept, learn its meaning and history, and even explore its implications for education, philosophical underpinnings (and objections), and more. We are also given a listing of additional key references should we wish to pursue our studies in additional publications. The best way for you to see the level of detail that these entries provide is to use the "look inside this book" link (under the listing, above) and read through a few sample entries. I have little doubt you'll be as impressed as I.
The text does not limit itself to conceptual entries. There is wide coverage of personages, philosophical positions, historical items, theological issues, church history, church liturgy, and more. The current incarnation of the text has resulted in an extended collaboration of hundreds of scholars, teachers, historians, and researchers to expand the coverage far beyond its original 1957 incarnation. The most surprising thing about the text is that it doesn't cost three times what it does. How to improve it? Well, the only thing I can come up with is that it would certainly be nice to have the book also released in electronic format, so that we can search by term, print selected entries, or copy selected references together for future study. Nevertheless, the book as it stands today easily takes its place among the premier reference works of the domain. Highly recommended.
A Masterful Triumph.......2006-07-17
The third edition of the Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church retains its great reputation as the single best reference work for use when studying the Christian religion. Now in the hands of E. A. Livingstone (who took over for the late F. L. Cross), it combines excellent scholarship from all parts of the Church and presents each topic relatively free of ecclesial bias. The topics covered are not short descriptions of a few sentences but multi-paragraph articles that are well researched, very readable, and remarkably complete. For those who are developing an interest in Church history, it will be an indispensible tool for their research. All in all, it is a masterful triumph.
An apologia for Catholic tradition, not a dictionary.......2006-07-15
As the title says the book is rife with Catholic apologetics. Catholicism is the touchstone used to compare pretty much every belief and "ism" to (i.e. protestantism, arianism, etc...) This review is not to make a case for or against Catholicism, but to demonstrate the ludicrous "scholarship" of this work, as opposed to what one would expect from any work claiming to be a "dictionary." Instead of spending it's words on the historical aspects/development of a given belief, the entries are dominated by apologias for, or against, said belief from the Catholic point of view. This behavior is exemplified in the treatment of the Trinity doctrine entry, and oddly, a venomous attack on Jehovah's Witnesses (while giving fair accounts to pretty much every modern religious movement that Catholicism generally deems: "heretical.").
The Trinity: More than half of the entry is dedicated to exegesis of New Testament passages according to modern Trinitarian thought following the claim that (pg. 1394): "Though the word 'Trinity'.. is not found in Scripture, the conception is there both implicitly and explicitly." Also, the very first sentence of the entry calls the Trinity doctrine: "The central dogma of Christian theology", however, in providing an argument, instead of historical facts, the work relegates itself to the category of apologetics, not scholarship. As an argument, it naturally downplays the significance of the opposing viewpoints, in this case: the "heresy" of Subordinationism (a topic that doesn't even receive it's own entry in this "dictionary"!), its proponents, Gnosticism, and the prevalent Arianism. The author violates the context of the historical development of what it calls "the central dogma of Christian theology" by glossing over centuries of the doctrines' development; even going so far as to label some of the defenders and propagators (pre-Nicea) of early Trinitarian thought: "unorthodox" (despite the fact that "orthodoxy" hadn't been established yet). (pg. 1394 - "Where the doctrine was elaborated, as e.g. in the writings of the Apologists, the language remained on the whole indefinite, and from a later standpoint, was even partly unorthodox. Sometimes it was not free from a certain subordinationism..")
On Christian Science (pg. 279): "Its teaching on the unreality of matter, sin, and suffering conflicts with the Biblical doctrines of the Creation, Fall, and Redemption." The author fails to note that this is opinion (regardless if accurate or not).
Jehovah's Witnesses (pg. 729): "This Adventist teaching was developed by his successor, J.F. Rutherford on lines professedly subversive of civil authority... They can hardly be regarded as a religious society..", "Jehovah's Witnesses is an organization with printing establishments all over the world. They carry on an effective propaganda among an uncritical public and attract esp. the dissatisfied elements of society by preaching hatred of all existing institutions." Of the founder, Charles Taze Russel, the author again levels the charge of subversive teachings, and again makes the implication that Witnesses are civically disloyal anarchists (pg. 1210): "His teaching... lends itself to political propaganda of a subversive type... His ideas were developed in a still more anarchist direction by J.F. Rutherford."
Again, regardless if you hold the assertions made to be true, or not, the conclusion is unequivocally clear. I don't recommend spending more than 5$ on this book (including shipping). I gave it 1 star (because I can't give it zero), despite it's thoroughly un-scholastic nature, it is a good resource to have handy if you want to quickly know the dates of certain events (or if you need to prop up a table leg, or if you need a highly absorbent coaster). DO NOT expect nuanced, objective, comprehensive entries on any subject in this work (i.e. a DICTIONARY!). EXPECT argumentative, judgmental prose, and a total lack of objectivity.

Authoritatively second to none..........2003-07-15
'The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church', edited by the late F.L. Cross and E. A. Livingstone, is perhaps the authoritative, one-volume encyclopedia of information on Christianity. With over 480 contributors, from a myriad of denominational backgrounds, this book has a completeness that is unrivalled. Scholars from Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and other denominations, as well as Jewish and secular authorities from all over the world, have written or contributed to articles that reflect as best possible an unbiased and authoritative compilation of history, theology, liturgy, scriptural study, art, biographies, denominational and calendrical organisation, and inter-religious attitudes.
The current edition, published in 1997, is the third edition of the ODCC to appear since its was first issued in 1957. It has an unrivalled reputation since first being published by Oxford don and cleric F.L. Cross. After his death, Dr. E.A. Livingstone took the helm to oversee production of the current volume.
There is increased coverage of the Eastern Churches, certain issues in moral theology, and developments stemming from the Second Vatican Council. Numerous new entries have been added and the extensive bibliographies have been brought up to date. Readers are provided with over 6,000 authoritative cross-referenced entries covering all aspects of the subject.
The book is over 1750 pages in length, very much the ready reference rather than the narrative sort, but many of the longer articles provide depth and detail, and articles generally include references for further research at the conclusion.

I have had the opportunity, over the last two years, to use Sandy's training manual to facilitate groups for women who have lived with violence, either as children or in an intimate relationship. These women have been told that the aggressive rage directed towards then is anger, so they are often very afraid that if they express anger it will look and sound like what they lived with. The information in the training manual encourgages women to explore the real feeling of anger, and practise assertive skills that allow them to express their needs and wants.

I really like this book. Its design is atypical for a "question-book" in that the format is not multiple choice; rather, the author(s) intend for the reader to reflect upon their theoretical and practical knowledge-base before formulating an answer. This makes this book thought-stimulating as opposed to standard multiple choice books, which may be good, but you will most assuridly never see those "same" multiple choice questions and answer-options replicated on an actual board exam. Good book.

Wonderfully informative. This book has become my most trusted reference for the northern Rhone. It is well written and informative. Mades me feel I am there. John Livingstone is an old and good friend of mine, and after reading (parts) of his book I am really anxious to try Condrieu and Hermitage wines. So far I always stick to Bourgogne, Bordeaux and Loire wines. I cannot imagine how he con review all those different wines in one life. This book is like a bible.

After reading this book I changed my itinerary for my recent tour of Provence/Cotes du Rhone to include three days in the Northern Rhone. I am so glad I did. This book was so helpful during my visit. I carried it with me. After reading this book, the vignerons become your new best friends. It also gives a real sense of place. The detailed reviews of vintages is fabulous. I'm now collecting the wines of the Northern Rhone.

Livingstone-Learmonth does a knock up job, has meticulously researched and what's more--- knows that you should make your drinking decisions by looking into the vigneron or negoc behind the wine and the way they work and not by looking at a score.
Who knew that a guidebook to the Rhone could not only be a necessary resource book but also a hell of a read? This is an in-depth and entertaining insight into a region that produces the ne plus ultra of syrah (yes, viognier and the other whites, but it's all about the syrah, isn't it?).

Business Basics Bestseller 1: The Easy, Interesting, Open-book Look at the Game of Business Numbers! 2nd Edition
I have an MBA, so I can look at this from two angles - before and after. When you start MBA school you will quickly find yourself in the many trees of the forest of accounting and finance class without the benefit of having a view of the forest. This is no fun, let me assure you. I sat beside many a fellow student who groaned and strained through accounting 101 (many MBA's are not business majors first). I wish I had the book I am recommending before I ever set foot in class.
"Business Basics Bestseller 1" introduces you to the basics of business including the jargon behind the numbers and where all the formulas come from before you plow into a true "finance and accounting text." Search for "Business Basics Bestseller 1" and add it to your consideration. If you have never had this stuff 'splained' to you before, you will like it. This is not a suggestion that you substitute it for this text, just that you check it out as well. It's a tad bit more expensive than other paperback F&A books, but the ROI is great because of the time it saves in learning. When you finish your MBA, line up all your books beside this one and see which one you really liked -- it'll be BBB #1.
A good overview of key concepts.......2006-02-09
As an undergraduate, I studied political science; as a graduate student, I studied history (among other things) - however, few if any of my classes ever dealt with the actual mechanics of business, despite dealing with business in a more general sense (as it would fit in the context of history and politics). I decided that it was important to learn some of the basic concepts of business administration, and the Portable MBA series by John Wiley & Sons publishers fit the bill.
This book on finance and accounting is a tricky read at times - it tries to present what is in essence a numerical enterprise in language that a liberal arts graduate would understand, with a minimum of mathematics. Despite my liberal arts background, I am actually also well trained in math, so I found this occasionally frustrating. However, I can see the purpose in it. The first section deals with understanding such basics as financial statements, cost-profit-volume analysis, activity-based costing, budgetary issues, and how computers work (generally speaking) in the area of accounting and finance. The second section looks at planning and forecasting - this is a real help in understanding the financial pages of the newspaper, and also provides some insight for understanding what the government statistics that are released on financial and budgetary matters mean. The third section looks at issues of finance more narrowly, at things such as mergers and acquisitions (sometimes big in the news), public offerings of stock, just what a board of governors/directors does, and what bankruptcy means (how can major corporations go bankrupt and still be flying, for example?).
The authors who contributed to this volume have both academic and professional experience, and tend to do a good job at explaining things in terms that the non-professional can understanding. Anyone with a basic undergraduate background should find this volume accessible. However, accounting is a world of its own, and takes some effort to understand, so I will not make the assertion that this book is an easy one to read.
While I am far from being able to help anyone with their accounting homework, I am pleased that I am able to understand the terminology and concepts as accounting instructors at my college discuss their lesson plans and instructional issues. This book is in large part responsible for that.
Ok for what it is.........2005-11-08
I think if you are using this book as the sole basis for "pre-studying" for an MBA program, you are going to be pretty shocked in a descent biz grad school program. It isn't a bad book, but as one other commenter mentioned it uses pretty broad strokes on theory without explaining the underlying detail (i.e. practical formulas, analysis, in depth case studies). So it is sort of half way between a real text book and one of the typical broad stroke popular business books. After reading it, get a reading list for an MBA managerial finance course, go to your university bookstore and have a little read - I think you will see the difference in audience and expectations.
To be more effective it really needs an accompanying workbook and CD with questions and answers based on the content - aimed at a graduate level. Expectations regarding analysis are generally pretty high in most MBA programs and understanding the level of analysis you should be capable of providing (fairly rapidly) to case studies/problems is important.
Not a bad book for a refresher if you already have done a number of business courses. Especially if you have texts still that fill in the blanks.

This book has what you will need in a portable MBA. It is selective, has scope and completeness and is fast paced. You will need to be very focused to read it but that is only expected.

I liked the way the book didn't get bogged down in too much math. The capital budgeting chapters were clear, much more to the point than the textbooks I tried to read.

Amazon doesn't tell you that this book is Volume 1 of 2. Additionally, when you receive the book and find out it is 1 of 2, you can't buy Volume 2. Apparently what is needed is the following ISBN, which is supposed to contain both volumes: 1-58976-287-8. Very poor identification on the Amazon website.
Incredible Man.......2006-06-19
David Livingston was an incredible man. He explored areas of Africa that had been previoulsy ignored by most of Europe. His notes on the regions he explored and the people he encountered are meticulous and fascinating. Prior to his visit to the region of Nyasaland, every year between 5,000-20,000 slaves were being sold to slave traders in the region. Livingston attacked the slave trade head on and was largely responsible for its downfall in that area. While some of his personal notes would be considered ignorant or offensive by modern standards, he was progressive and open minded for his time. He is a great historical figure who is too often ignored.
Bright Light in the Dark Continent.......2003-05-28
In his book on Nile exploration, Moorehead speaks of Livingstone as possessing "baraka"--the quality of making everything seem better just by his presence. Livingstone's humanity and generosity of spirit illuminate this book. The details of his journey through Southern Africa are interesting and vivid, though not crammed with incident. Modern readers will be interested in Livingstone's observations on race relations in the different colonial settlements of the region. But the highlight of the book for me was the personality of Livingstone himself, his sympathy and insight, his matter-of-fact documentation of danger and hardship, his global perspective. A particularly rewarding read if Speke and Burton have left you with a bad taste in your mouth.

This is an interesting book, with many quotations from the great explorer, including 100 or so pages of his last journal entries (with minimal and helpful editorial comments).
It has some fascinating comments from the anonymous author, including details regarding the Sahara's sub-marine past (existence, in the nineteenth century Sahara, of fossils of contemporary forms of marine life, and great areas of salt flats), and also later intimations of lost civilisations beneath the great desert's sands.
However, not all of the book's 640 pages, by any means, are direct quotes from the missionary/explorer, which I felt I was led to expect.
The book is, nevertheless, a fascinating volume originally published in 1874, just one year after Livingstone's death. It contains generous extracts from the associated writings of American journalist Stanley, and of contemporary explorers/hunters. It is, therefore, well worth the read and a good first volume for those interested in Livingstone and/or the Africa of his days. I was especially intrigued by the accounts of the various native tribes and native villages Livingstone met with. I also enjoyed reading of the geology, geography, and zoology of the continent.

Headache help.......2007-09-17
I have read about 4 books on headaches and lots of magazine articles and websites. This was probably the best because it was the most informative. It let me know what things I was taking that may help with my headache but usually caused "rebound" headaches. It also helped with what foods that help and what foods to stay away from. It was about as helpful as a book can be but I still suffer with lots of headaches. Now I am more inclined to suffer through them. I don't want the rebound effects of what most drugs cause.
A relief for migraine sufferers.......2007-09-08
This book has been a godsend. I have suffered from migraines since I was a teenager. Nothing worked to relieve my pain - I would just have to suffer through them until they were over.
After reading reviews of this book on Amazon, I decided to give it a try. What an amazing difference! I will not tell you that I don't get migraines anymore, which I do. But this book tells you ways to prevent them and to lessen the pain during a migraine. Its fantastic!
I went from having at least one migraine a week to one a month. They used to last me for days, but using the exercises in the book, I just take 5 minutes and it lessens up the pain enough for me to function or even breaks it all together.
Wonderful book! A must-read for migraine sufferers. I even plan to buy my mother a copy for Christmas.
Not the Best Headache Book - Little Practical Advice ..........2007-07-17
The better book is Bucholz's Heal Your Headache which is the most no-nonsense, practical book out there. Breaking the Headache Cycle is mostly philosophical rambling about stress reduction and breathing with little useful advice. The chapter on the pros and cons of current medications is the only useful part of the book. The rest is fluff. If you check out the Bucholz book, you'll see what I'm talking about.
This book changed my life!.......2007-05-17
Since I have suffered from headaches all my life, I have eagerly read any book I can get my hands on that may lead to some relief. This is the first book that I can truly say has SOLVED my problem! For many years, I have had almost-daily headaches and even as recent as Feb 2007, I had 2 to 3 headaches a day (a total of 46 headaches that month alone)! I took Zomig to get relief. It's effective and very expensive but I also knew I was taking WAY too much medicine. This book is full of great information about the hows and whys of migraine headaches and also many, many suggestions of options to break the pattern and get relief. It's very practical, easy to read with stories of other peoples headache histories. As I read it, it seemed they were writing about ME and my headache history. Two very powerful suggestions from that book that changed my life: the deep breathing exercises when I am feeling stress and a low dose of amitriptyline, as prescribed by my doctor. Because of this book, I can truly say - I NO LONGER GET HEADACHES!

When my English step-daughter started going to the Methodist Church, she asked my husband for an American Bible. She found it difficult to read the KJV but had enjoyed reading my Bible (ASV). Within 10 minutes of her call, we were at the Bible book store in Katy, TX, buying this Bible. (She was 16 at the time.) We had her name engraved on it, and she thought that was wonderful. (It seems that is not a common practice in England.) Because this version was so easy to understand, her friends thought it was great. We ended up buying a copy for her best friend (the minister's daughter) a copy as well. We've given my step-daughter a newer Bible, as she's 18 now, but she still prefers this one. When her brother turned 16, I bought the young men's version for him.

I was afraid this Bible would be too young and immature for my 15 year old daughter, but reading the other reviews helped me decide to get it. Unless your daughter is homeschooled and has no contact with TV, radio, internet, movies, kids at church, in the neighborhood, or in sports, they won't be shocked by anything in this book. My daughter loves it and she gave it the 5 star rating.

I have never seen such inappropriate topics discussed in a "Bible" for "teen-girls". The social decadence we see in this day and age can only be furthered by premature knowledge of the immoral content in this book. Young ladies can learn about these things once they are safely married; their vulnerable minds will be poisoned by such disgraceful things. No responsible Christian parent would allow a such a "Bible" through the front door, much less into the hands of their immature "teen" daughters. The hypocrites who produced this will be judged by the Lord in full, LOL

As a fan of espionage, terrorism, and special ops. books I had to check this out. This covers a multitude of the aforementioned groups.
