The story of a funny, fascinating, melancholy life........2007-06-17
Rereading "The Naked Civil Servant" after many years, I find Quentin Crisp's melancholy wit just as bracing as I did when I first encountered the book. The chiseled perfection of Crisp's aphorisms recall Oscar Wilde (though Crisp's distaste for Wilde was famous; Wilde's hubris and subsequent downfall made life that much harder for the gay men, such as Crisp, who came after him). One famous example: "I would have been tempted to say that he was ill did I not know that health consists of having the same diseases as one's neighbors." Another: "'Immaturity' is one more word that requires definition. To men it means the inability to stand on one's own two feet. A woman flings it at anyone who doesn't want to marry her. Here I find myself for once inclined toward the masculine view." Yet despite the humor, the overwhelming mood of "The Naked Civil Servant" is of loneliness. Crisp, who outed himself flamboyantly forty years before Stonewall, presents himself as a wildly contradictory character: exhibitionistic yet inherently and Englishly modest, too honest to present himself as anything other than he was, yet realizing fully the opprobrium and loss of companionship he would suffer by doing so. Reading his autobiography shows a younger generation of gay men precisely the mindset a hidebound society instilled in homosexuals in the early 20th century. Crisp, despite his flamboyance, was not immune to it: "Homosexuals were ashamed. They resented not being in the mainstream of life. The feeling varied from irritation to the anguish of irrevocable exile. It had little to do with God or the neighbors or the police. It was private and irremediable." In subsequent years--he lived to be ninety, outliving the publication of "The Naked Civil Servant" by three decades--Crisp found a measure of public acceptance and acclaim he would have thought impossible in the 1930s. Yet the loneliness and melancholy never really left him. To read "The Naked Civil Servant" is to be impressed by a great personality and a brilliant, acute observer of sex and society. But, at the same time, you wish he could have found a little more happiness for himself.
Disappointing.......2006-09-09
I have heard of The Naked Civil Servant for many years and finally decided to pick it up to read. In many ways it is a great piece of gay history that would have been lost were it not for Quentin Crisp's acerbic wit and very English sense of time and place. As a historical piece, The Naked Civil Servant is well worth reading.
Unfortunately, I also found myself wanting the book to end - in the same way that I wanted the movie Capote to end. I found Quentin Crisp to be a singularly unpleasant and self absorbed man who strives for fame by being outrageous, but never pleasant. His personality took away much of the value that I was hoping for in this book. I found his humor to be too cute in many cases and his quest for self-importance highly aggravating.
I don't give five-star reviews.......2006-08-27
What kind of title is that? Well, for 35 years, he was a nude model for art classes. So there you go. A naked civil servant. Now there's a career choice my high school guidance counselor never told me about.
Quentin is the quintessential outsider. He outed himself as flamboyantly gay in 1931, and manages to be both sincere and parody at the same time. Forget the gay part. Focus on the outsider part. His writing style is quite crisp, ho ho!
Time to scan the cover again, as opposed to being original.
"His wit is brilliant, his observations acute, his self-mockery undiluted by the need to sentimentalize."
"'As soon as I stepped out of my mother's womb... I realized that I had made a mistake,' Quentin declares, giving a small hint of the witty and wry approach he takes toward the life he describes with undiluted exuberance in this classic autobiography, which is both a comic masterpiece and a unique testament to the resilience of the human spirit."
"His hilarious descriptions of encounters with parents, friends, employers, soldiers and sailors, and the law reveal the strength and humor of an honest man, determined to face the world with the uncensored, unapologetic truth about himself."
"A work of great wit, intelligence and sensitivity."
Quite.
An Unusually Riveting, Exuberant Autobiography .......2006-01-08
"This is an unusually riveting, exuberant autobiography of a man who, in 1931, 'came out' in the streets of London as a self-confessed and self-evident homosexual. At a time when the slightest sign of homosexuality aroused immediate disgust, Quentin Crisp made the courageous decision to be true to his nature. He adopted an outrageously effeminate manner and appearance ('I wore makeup at a time when even on women eye shadow was sinful'), and his flamboyant exhibitionism, henna-dyed hair, and unconventional behavior shocked London society of the thirties. Though he was harassed, ridiculed, and beaten, he was determined to spread the message that homosexuality did not exclude him or anyone else from the human race. ¶ Quentin Crisp has become a cult celebrity since the highly acclaimed dramatization of The Naked Civil Servant was first aired on American television. His is a unique life story. One feels the strength and humor of an honest man, determined to face the world with the truth about himself."--© zebraz
I adored it.......2004-03-05
It made me laugh and kept my attention. It is so sad that the hatred and violence that Quentin Crisp experienced years ago is still around today. I did feel lik I really knew the man after reading the book. He is very honest and very dry. A good read.

Another great achievement!.......2000-05-12
Klaus Gerhart's new hardcover book of male nudes in black & white is magnificent. As in his previous 3 books, he poses his men in outdoor settings as well as indoors. These are men who have beautiful bodies, out of reach to most of us. But Klaus also gets his point across in these photos, that these are real men with feelings, jobs, relationships, and problems like the rest of us. Its wonderful that he lets us share in their beauty when they are in such peak condition. Another great book from Klaus.

Book Description
This exciting collection gives a whole new meaning to "beach reading." Paired with some of the most exciting contemporary photographs of the male nude are reflections paying homage to the beauty, sensuality, and raw masculinity of men by celebrated writers including Quentin Crisp, Brad Gooch, Alan Helms, Mary Ellen Hannibal, Paul Roche, and David Leddick.
Hot off the beaches of Miami, the book features fresh photography from some well-known artists as well as exciting newcomers, including Ali, Salvatore Baiano, Andy Devine, and Dianora Niccolini.
Divided thematically into chapters like Men on the Beach, Men in the Surf, Men Cooling Off, and Men in the Shade, this celebration of men sans clothes al fresco is a treasure for those who like to look at some good, fresh flesh.

A Hopeless Mess.......2000-07-17
This little gimmick of book, a small paperback, is totally unorganized, with phony section titles imposed on random photos, so that we have "Men in the Sun," "Men Cooling Off," "Men in the Water," etc. The actual photos in those different sections prove underwhelming vis-a-vis these grandiose designations. Whoever rushed to get this book out would have done better just to present the photos contiguously, but that would have denied the opportunity to use two filler pages per section. It took me about five minutes to flip through and get a sense of all of the photos in this little pamphlet of a book.
The "literary" selections are gratuitous, adding nothing to our appreciation of the photographs and usually having nothing to do with them. For example, the author has reprinted at length the opening vignette from Brad Gooch's novel Scary Kisses, which is kind of sexy on its own but whose only apparent criteria for inclusion in this volume are its homoeroticism and the coincidence that it takes place -in the sun! So, too, with the other literary paraphernalia. It's filler.
Worst of all, the photos themselves aren't even erotic or sexy. I know, this is a subjective observation, and I admit that a few of the individual photos are more nuanced, or provocative, or more sophisticated than others. But for the most part, the photos are artless and tacky, as when a jet of water is used to camouflage the buttocks of a presumably nude man darting out of a swimming pool. That kind of thing belongs on a postcard for Miami Beach. As for the men themselves, this little collection presents a broad range from pretty boy models to bald weight lifter types to African Americans and even a baby for good measure. The overall effect is of schizophrenia, not serendipity, and instead of finding something to celebrate in diversity, this book merely finds chaos.
You can do better with your money.

The male nude has been a staple of art since the Greeks graced their public buildings with the glorified forms of gods and heroes. Renaissance artists didn't hesitate to display the male form, particularly in churches; the past 100 years of photography have seen a resurgence of the male nude. Nonetheless, until now there's been very little critical analysis of these nudes' homoerotic content. In his Lambda Award-winning Naked Men: Pioneering Male Nudes 1935-1955, David Leddick uses intensive research, interviews, and photographic representations to uncover sources and inspirations for the male nude through 20 years of contemporary art. Relying on the words and visual work of hundreds of artists, models, and writers (including George Platt Lynes, Paul Cadmus, Tennessee Williams, and Gore Vidal), Leddick conjures up the images, history, and social context of the mid-20th-century homoerotic nude. Filled with photos and reproductions, Naked Men shows us how gay sensibilities and gay culture have freed the male body from social restraints in both art and everyday life. Leddick's The Male Nude, while not strictly a companion volume, does similar work, detailing more than a century of male nudes. As with Naked Men, this book is lavishly and beautifully illustrated. Both are important documents of gay male history and culture. --Michael Bronski
Book Description
This extraordinary book documents a fascinating moment in the history of American culture--a period in the 1930's, 40's, and 50's that gave birth to new notions of male beauty and desire, and to a new type of male icon. Long before Stonewall and the gay pride movement, there was a small group of daring men--both photographers and the models who sat for them--who helped pave the way for male sexual liberation. Led by the photographer George Platt Lynes, the painter Paul Cadmus, and the arts patron Lincoln Kirstein, this group shattered taboos surrounding the artistic presentation of the male figure. The young subjects of these photographs--who often posed after-hours in studios officially used for fashion shoots--were in essence the first true male models. In a perfect complement to the intimacy of these early nudes, photographs are included of these men today. The pictures and stories in Naked Men are as relevant and evocative today as they were a half a century ago.

Not for women........2007-03-09
If you are a woman who appreciates handsome naked men, good luck finding non-homosexual pictures. However, if you are a gay man you might really like this book! One interesting thing: these are rather old photographs. Next to the nude (on the opposite page) you will see a more current headshot of the model - AS AN OLD MAN!!! Yikes!
great book!.......2006-07-10
This book is great.. as an artist I was just thrilled with this book. The history behind the models was insightful and captivating. A must read if you want to shoot figure models.
A Brilliant Idea Well Executed!.......2004-06-12
David Leddick, who has given us many books on the naked male, had a brilliant idea for this one: he would put together a book of photographs of nude models from 1935 to 1955 and include recent photographs of the men as close to the time of publication of this book (1997) as possible. The result is a stunning success. There is a foreward by Quentin Crisp, a male model, himself, for art classes in England in the 1930's (THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT) and a long, sometimes wordy introduction by Mr. Leddick. Of more interest, at least to me, is the biographical information about each of the models, their occupations, whether they married or not, what they are doing now and if they are alive--most of them were at the time Mr. Leddick began his research.
Many of the photographs are by George Platt Lynes, who apparently never took a bad picture and to whom every subsequent photographer of the nude male owes a tremendous debt. No photographer since Lynes has lit the human body with such skill and beauty.
There are unknown models here but some big names as well: Tennessee Williams, the very straight but most unshy Yul Brynner, Donald Windham, Christopher Isherwood, the famous artist Paul Cadmus, the photographer Horst as well as George Platt Lynes, himself.
Two of my favorite photographs: that of Umberto Visbal, a darkroom and studio assistant for Lynes in the early 1950's-- outrageously sexual (p. 127), and Carlos McLendon (p. 87) shot in September 1947; here we have a photograph beautifully composed and printed with many shades of gray.
My favorite quote from the written material: Bill Harris (pp. 94-95) saying that he never frequented a bathhouse again after hearing someone say: "See that little old Chinese woman over there? That used to be the handsomest man in New York." The writer Camus may have been correct when he said that after the age of 40, we are all responsible for our own faces. He could have included our bodies as well.
This book just becomes more important with time.......2003-10-08
When David Leddick first published NAKED MEN: PIONEERING MALE NUDES 1935 - 1955 in the year 1997, many readers voiced the opinion that other photographers' books admiring the beauty of the masculine physique were far superior, more provocative, more erotic, and so forth. What is becoming more evident now six years later is just how sensitive Leddick's writing is and how insightful this study remains. His premise - to address artists who either photographed, painted or drew the male nude in a period of time when the male nude as subject was verboten - reveals a brave period of history in gender studies. Leddick shares many images of young men and pairs those images with current (at the time of his writing) views of those pictured models. This could be a gimick if it stopped there, but Leddick has the sensitivity to focus on truly significant artists, allowing us insights not avialable elsewhere in the literature. A long portion is devoted, naturally, to George Platt Lynes who more than most photographers devoted his camera to captruing the 'compleat' persona of artists such as Jared French, Christopher Isherwood, Yul Brynner and well established studio models. What he shows us are the photographs taken from 1935 - 1955 and then shares photographs of those models today. He also visits Lincoln Kirsten, Paul Cadmus, Lew Christensen, and Tennessee Williams and has many interesting anecdotes which he shares in well written prose. This is not a book of homoerotica (though the models both young and old are beautifully captured). This is a vital volume of history that makes as interesting a treat for the mind as it does for the eye. Especially recommended for the collector who has Leddick's later books - this preludes the spectrum of what is to come.
A Look at the Intentions of Naked Radicals.......2003-04-26
This book is not for those searching out eye-candy. While the pictures are beautifully photographed examples of the male body, it is not a pornographic work. It is a study of the attitudes and intentions behind the models and photographers on display. It is about the movement they inspired that has gotten terribly out of control with the various perversions of extremist pornographers that tout the word 'art' as if it could be applied to ever speck of waste upon every piece of toilet paper. This work does not agree with such a mentality. The pictures are tasteful and sincere. It is for those interested in art history, not a quick thrill.

A treasure.......2002-11-19
If you have read the book with Mr. Crisps droll, flat voice in your head....you can begin to imagine how much fun the audio version of this book is. His dry wit is very much in evidence here as he shares his unique perspective on life in the "smile and nod racket".
I think this recording belongs in the Smithsonian Archives.
There is a God, his name is Crisp, Quentin Crisp........1998-08-24
Crisp has done it again! Just when you think you're a maven on things-BOOM- he publishes his diaries! What a scandal, although I am sure some blue nosed puritan proofreader somewhere omitted some of the more "Corrupting evidence", Mr. Crisps personality and always charming style and wit still manage to rise above the parchment at every turn. This is an ideal "Holiday" gift for a freind to take along when on a long flight or travel to make the time seem to "Fly by", as it did for me when I enjoyed it the first time...My Word!,...I think I shall go and read it again now. Mr. Crisp is timeless and indefatigable... and like "Miss Jean Brodie", still in his "Prime"time! Kudo's once again and, Bravo, Mr. Crisp, You are "La Divine'" indeed!

Never leave home without it!.......2003-09-21
Before I read Quentin's book, I lived my life as one whom he describes in the book; I ran about willy nilly, living others' lives as if they were my own, suffering from their disasters as much as they did. I frittered away enough personal energy to light several skyscrapers, and wondered why I was so very drained all the time. Taking an interest in others' lives, WITHOUT becoming emotionally involved, literally, saved my life. I have learned from Quentin that I can just listen to mere acquaintances, many of whom are drama addicts looking only for a forum, and then move on to what truly interests me. This is not being shallow; this is protecting yourself from those takers of the world, who, as Quentin says, "...are infinite and insatiable." This practice of tuning out the banal has allowed me to have the energy to devote to my husband, son and family, who deserve my energy.
I employ "Crisperanto" and the little white lie, nearly every day of my life. This has protected me and given others the satisfaction of being heard. Instead of standing on my head to avoid the takers of the world, I have learned to assertively and diplomatically put them off.
If I could, I would require that this book become part of school curriculums the world over. Members of the Senate, Congress, and the President should be coached, DAILY, in the art of "Crisperanto." Using "Crisperanto" could very well have prevented the "need" to go to war, at various and sundry times in our country's history.
I will continue to honor Quentin's memory by using "Manners from Heaven" as my bible.
He knows his subject(s)........2000-08-30
Quentin Crisp is the only writer on social behaviour able to discern manners from etiquette. Miss Manners, Emily Post or any of the other "society" ladies have never been able to make this distinction. He is also the only writer (in other works) able to clearly define style, so it is evident that we must pay attention. Rather than prattle on about how to behave in such-and-such a situation, he gives general guidlines for good behaviour using witty and entertaining anecdotes. This is not a reference book (as well a book on etiquette might be), but a lively discussion of manners, of how to make others feel welcome in your presence.
A guide to good manners that will not terrify.......2000-05-09
Mr Crisp has (with the help of co-writer John Hofsess) written a fine guide to manners in the troubling modern age, with all its noise and haste, where what once was impolite or unthinkable is now enpowering. Crisp sees a world devouring itself, and sees good manners and civility as a way of rectifying this. His chief point - that manners are a way of getting what we want without appearing an absolute swine. They are a way of making everyone happier and more comfortable, rather than a dusty old set of exclusionary rules.
The language is fluid, dare I say crisp, and overflowing with wit, and has the authoritative, wisened, grandfatherly tone of one who has seen it all. It is caustic and by no means conventional - for example, he feels that telling the truth all the time is not the best idea for smooth social relations - "The lie is the basic building block of good manners."
Concise, knowing, acid and honest.
