Book Description

"Where were you when Diana died? For Trevor Rees-Jones, the answer is simple: he was in the same hospital as Diana, fighting for his own life a few rooms away.As bodyguard to her companion Dodi Fayed, he was with the couple when, hounded by paparazzi, and with a driver who turned out to be drunk, their Mercedes crashed into the thirteenth pillar of the tunnel under the Place de l'Alma in Paris.Dodi and the Driver, Henri Paul, died instantaneously, medics say; Diana was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors worked feverishly to resuscitate her before giving up in the early hours of Sunday morning.Miraculously, Trevor survived. But his condition was critical--internal chest injuries and a broken wrist were the least of it.His head had taken the brunt of the impact and suffered catastrophic damage; his face was crushed beyond recognition. In a stunning medical drama, however, a facial surgeon performed a miracle of reconstruction, and--along with Trevor's own indomitable will and the support of his family and friends--the bodyguard was able to leave the hospital after just over a month. His goal then was straightforward: to return to a normal life as soon as possible, go back to work for his employer, Mohamed Al Fayed, and to the simple pleasures of rugby and his mates at home in Shropshire. But the crash that nearly killed him had killed Diana, Princess of Wales, one of the most famous women of the late twentieth century.A normal life was no longer an option. An as Mohamed Al Fayed's grief at the loss of his son quickly turned into a desperate hunt for reasons, for culprits and conspiracy, Trevor found his unswerving loyalty to the Boss at first questioned and then, ultimately, destroyed, as Fayed pointed the finger of blame at him.The Bodyguard's Story grippingly describes, for the first time, Trevor Rees-Jones's part in these astonishing events. From the prelude to Paris, when Trevor found himself minding the Princess and her two sons in the south of France, to the crash itself and its causes and consequences, this book reveals the true, first-hand account of one of the most sensational news stories of the last century.Compelling, alarming and yet deeply moving, it is a remarkable story of courage under fire, and of how ordinary people can react to extraordinary circumstances and survive, scarred, but with their souls and values intact."

5 out of 5 stars A book to end the conspiracy theories?.......2007-04-22

'The Bodyguard's Story' is ghost written and very readable. It has the intimacy if a biography, a pace befitting the events, and the readable style of novel. Recommended to anyone for a good read, 'The Bodyguard's Story' essential reading for those interested in the events of Diana's death.

As the sole survivor of the crash, the bodyguard's story should be the book to end the conspiracy theories. Its doesn't. First because of the inevitable pre-shock amnesia endured by all crash victims, especially a victim who injuries were so horrific as to bring him close to death. The Bodyguard's Story leaves gaps. Gaps left by the investigation, such as the existence of the Fiat Panda. However 'The Bodyguard's Story' does cover the exhaustive French investigation and accounts for the long period between crash and arrival at hospital for both Diana and 'her' bodyguard.

The book does reveal one fact that is not commonly perceived. The Body guard was not Diana's but for Dodi Al Fayed as employed by his father Mohamed Al Fayed. Diana had no body guard that day.

'The Bodyguard's Story' paints a picture of incompetent security and security officers as worried about instant dismissal by a dictatorial boss, Al Fayed, as they were for the security of their charges. The bodyguard's enduring loyalty to his 'Boss', Al Fayed, leaves a open the possibility, may even appear to suggest, that there were other reasons for the employee's amnesia. The book begs the question as to why Diana put herself at such risk, in the hands of a person known to be at odds with the British government and in a relationship which was bound to be of concern to all.

An intriguing and well written read.

4 out of 5 stars A true account of what happened.......2004-08-08

There is only one person that knows what actually happened before, during and after the horrific accident that left most of the world in shock and disbelief and that is Trevor Rees-Jones.

This was a fascinating look "behind the scenes" of a royal and much beloved figure and a very foolish "commoner". The fault of this accident seems to rest with Dodi making a bunch of unwise decisions that ultimately led to 3 people losing their lives.

A fascinating read, albeit a bit slow in some chapters, but fascinating none the less!

4 out of 5 stars From the source.......2004-01-14

I have always wondered what kind of a person Trevor Rees-Jones was and his book gave an in-depth view of him, personally and professionally . . . in his own words.

The saying goes that "truth is stranger than fiction." The truth is also less sensational and colorful than the portrait painted by tabloid hacks and unethical "journalists" the world over.

From the start, I didn't think Trevor was trying to cash in on his time with Diana, Princess of Wales. In the foreward, he stated that writing the book (author Moira Johnston helped him write it) was his way of dealing with the situation and moving on with his life.

Trevor is an ordinary guy who had a very high profile job. It was because of circumstances on the job (that lead to what Trevor called "an industrial accident") and the fact that he was in a car with the world's most famous woman that has put him center stage for the rest of his life.

I felt sorry for the entire Rees-Jones family as diary entry after another explained the turmoil going on inside each of them: His mother and stepfather's struggle to getting Trevor on the road to recovery, the whole family having to deal with the intense media pressure, having Trevor's professionalism called into question by so-called experts (that, in his own words, were not at the Ritz nor in the car), Trevor's having to cope with the fact that he was the only survivor, the family's having to deal with the first overprotective and subsequently vicious hand of Mohammed Al Fayed. The list goes on.

I did get mad at, but then later understood, Trevor's wanting to keep his job with Al Fayed. He was the textbook case example of a loyal employee. Unfortunately, Mohammed Al Fayed was (and still is) so hung up on his conspiracy theories that he thought Trevor was lying to him about how much he remembered of the accident. It was only when he (Al Fayed) was more forthright in wanting to take complete control of the investigation that Trevor had finally had enough and quit (his good friend, Kez, would also quit about two years after the crash for the same reason: He told Al Fayed to his face that he thought his theories were rubbish).

I give Trevor and his family (his real last name is just Rees but he changed HIS name to Rees-Jones because he was so in love with his now ex-wife Sue Jones) MUCH credit for coming through such a trying time in their lives not only intact but stronger than ever. They did not let any of the media attention go to their heads (even as Trevor's so-called friends and even Sue were selling themselves to the highest bidder in the media). They remained true small town folks to the end (and Trevor was even able to play his beloved rugby not a year after the crash).

Some folks may find this book boring as Trevor is a very down-to-earth chap who just shoots straight from the hip. He doesn't trump up the facts (or make things up entirely as the media decided to do time and again while Trevor refused to give interviews). He presents Diana in a very positive light and tells the unexciting truth about the goings on of the case and behind the scenes shananigans of one Mohammed Al Fayed.

Highly recommended (if you can still get it) for a first hand account of wha it's like on the other side of the camera and news reports.

5 out of 5 stars An Indepth View of a Royal Tragedy.......2003-08-11

Although somewhat hard to follow ; this is a book definitely worth reading. An indepth look , from the only survivor of a car crash that changed history! What could be more exciting.Somewhat rough around the edges;but ,nevertheless honest and telling Never knowing how these fateful events would unfold as they left the Ritz with Dodi Fayed and Princess Diana , Trevor
and Kez only knew that they were between a rock and a hard place. You don't disrespect the Boss's son when he's entertaining a Princess .It wouldn't be the first time Dodi's last minute change of plans surprised the bodyguards .At the recent screening of "Air Force One" Dodi had seated Diana in Trevors' usual seat by the door.Trevor nearly landed in Diana's lap. That same evening on route to the theatre with the Princess,Trevor had shown professionalism in eluding the paparazzi - so why the change in plans at the Ritz? Dodi's former girlfriend ,Kelly Fisher testified that Dodi was a "real dictator to Trevor".It was apparent that Dodi began to mistrust those around him ; and he just may have tried to impress the Princess with Henri Paul ; someone he knew he could trust. Trevor should have been compensated handsomely for his injuries.Money and justice just don't seem to mix .

1 out of 5 stars Basically a waste of time.........................2003-01-23

For those that were truly fans of Diana, this book does nothing. I am not, but still can respect a well written story which this book is definitely not. All it does do, is give some slight info to the curious of what took place a few months prior to her death. As far as any real insight into her life, personality, accident and all the miscellanoeus issues surrounding it, this book just touches the surface. Nothing gained or lost here except a little bit of time in the reading.

5 out of 5 stars The book now reissued - retitled, and is it the same?.......2005-02-16

The new and warranted reinterest in World War II, and D-Day specifically has given this book new life. What I am wondering is whether or not the content has been changed, Not an easy read back in 1975 when Anthony Cave Brown first slogged through the newly declassified material which help to make this book fascinating, I am tempted to wager that some things have been re-written. Only a guess of course. This could also be a good thing, as in the case of Pearl Harbor, where after 1995 declassification documents were used to prove ("Day Of Deceit by Mr. Stinnett) that the attack was not, in fact, a complete suprise. Seeing that the original was out-of-print I suppose that this is a welcome development to have a new edition, retitled or no. 30 years is a good long time - and perhaps more information is included while staying true to the "old" edition.

5 out of 5 stars Truth, in this case, is more than stranger than fiction.......2003-09-03

"Bodyguard Of Lies" is one of the most compelling and important reads out there. Lovers of Clancy novels should put them away for a year and concentrate on some of the most real bizarre, yet important, machinations of espionage and counter-espionage ever created and implemented. What gives this phenomenal work its incredible allure is the knowledge that these creations of historical intelligence import occored only a little more than a half-decade ago. The book takes its title from Winston Churchill's remark regarding the crucial role of good intelligence, where he stated, "In war-time, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies." Using for his research information that had only been de-classified the previous year (1975), Anthony Cave Brown takes us through the minefield that was "Ultra", the Allies means of reading the secret ciphers of the Third Reich. "Ultra" was of such devastating importance that the entire city of Coventry was sacrificed in order to keep secret the fact that the Allies had, early on in the war, broken the German "Enigma" ciphers. This top secret cipher would time and time again put vital information directly into the hands of the Allies. It is safe to say that "Ultra" may have been the difference between victory and defeat. Brown also details what can only be referred to as the most convoluted espionage and counter-espionage schemes that only the minds of men at war for the highest stakes ever perceived could conceive of. In one instance, a false 'cadaver' was planted in an apparant shipwreck, replete with false identity papers, false obituary, false love letters, fake funeral, and, more importantly, false maps and information intended to persuade the enemy that they had stumbled upon ACTUAL information, and act accordingly. Brown relates other tales - some quite unsavory on both sides - for instance, Allied baiting of French resistance in order to convince the enemy of the plausibility of invasion (or non-invasion, as the case warrented) at a given place or time. Agents were sometimes dropped into situations where their 'handlers' knew that cover had been blown or compromised...all done to keep a certain game afloat or a certain secret intact. Perhaps the most interesting revelations, for me, in the book came from the 'dangling' of certain German Generals and Intelligence officials who were not simply sympathetic to the Allies, but in many cases actually working against Hitler and taking incredible, traitorous risks to help defeat him (the Schwarze Kapelle, or, in English, the Black Orchestra). Abwehr head Wilhelm Canaris is studied in depth, and his behavior, not to mention his persona alone may be one of the deepest level secrets of the Second World War. Churchill is again quoted at the start of the section on 'Special Means', "In the high ranges of Secret Service work the actual facts in many cases were in every respect equal to the most fantastic inventions of romance and melodrama. Tangle within tangle, plot and counter-plot, ruse and treachery, cross and double-cross, true agent, false agent, double agent...were interwoven in many a texture so intricate as to be incredible and yet true. The Chief and the High Officers of the Secret Service revelled in these subterranean labyrinths, and pursued their task with cold and silent passion." This book will leave you relieved that men like Churchill, Sir Stewart Menzies, Alan Turing and the like were on the side of the Allies. The book may also leave some disturbed concerning what deep levels of intregue - double, triple, even quadruple-cross - can be invoked when men, and women, are convinced that they are fighting on the side of right against what they are sure is the side of wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible, but true.......2003-06-27

An accumulation of some of the most stimulating and exhaustively-researched details on the intel and counter-intel during WWII, particualrly surrounding D-Day. Truly amazing events chronicled extremely well; even after these many years since the book was first published, Cove-Brown's work stands out.

5 out of 5 stars The book on intelligence operations during World War II.......2002-09-26

This is an extremely detailed book on Allied (mainly British) deception operations during World War II. While it was written in 1976 it still hold up well, though some new information on the role of GCHQ and signals intelligence has been released since 1976. I am still amazed at the scope of operations the British ran during World War II. A very well written book, though it is by know means a quick read. It took me almost a month to get through it. If you are keenly interested in intelligence operations try to track down this book.

5 out of 5 stars Bodyguard of Lies.......2002-09-17

One of the most fascinating behind-the-scenes stories of how the fate of World War II hung in the balance which was tipped ultimately by seemingly inconsequential actions. A real page turner of little known facts..................................the reader will have a hard time setting it down

An enjoyable read. The female character was more forthcoming than the male, at first. I would recommend this book for those who enjoy action and suspense.

3 out of 5 stars Mystery, Romance & Drama.......2007-08-28

This is the first novel I've read by Andrea Jackson. I enjoyed the mystery and intrigue throughout the novel, but I found the story to be a little longer than necessary and bogged down with some unnecessary details. This mystery/romance which centers on the budding relationship between Harris Knight and Dominique Brandon, who separately were total opposites, but when they came together as a couple, some how despite their differences they complimented and completed one another totally. Ms. Jackson has spun a tale of mystery, romance, love, jealousy, deceit, false impressions, dysfunctional family ties, and a lot of drama. The main characters are definitely memorable and some of the supporting cast aided in holding your interest in the many twist and turns throughout this novel. However, I feel if the story wasn't filled with so many unimportant details, it would've had a more effortless flow and made for a better read. That said, it was still a decent novel.

5 out of 5 stars More than a romance...,.......2006-11-22

Book Description: Successful image consultant Dominique Brandon is shocked when she becomes the target of a malicious stalker. After all, the Brandon name stands for accomplishment and security. Harris Knight is confident that he can stop the stalker. By instinct and by training, his nature is to protect and defend. He never lets emotion get in the way. Can this society Princess trust her own Black Knight with her heart? Or will he let her through his defenses only to find that he's still the outsider once she's safe?

Publisher Description: What happens when a sophisticated businesswoman from an upper class family is forced to seek the protection of a rough-around-the-edges strongman? When image consultant Dominique Brandon is threatened by a stalker, she turns to bodyguard Harris Knight for help. Can this society princess trust her own black Knight with her heart?

This romantic suspense, centering around Harris Knight & Dominique Brandon, incorporates jealousy, first/false impressions, differences that are really similarities, familial dysfunction, selfishness fed by a self-sacrificing selflessness, deceit, compassion, love of self, as well as the understanding love of one striving to help one see their self-worth. While this story incorporates family dysfunction, drama, suspense, and a lot of ill-will, it is really about two deserving halves coming together to form a better whole.

The author moves the story at a nice pace that maintains the reader's interest. This is my first book by this author and a pleasant surprise.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic Suspense.......2004-03-15

Dominique Brandon is a young image consultant with her own business, struggling to make her business successful and live up to the Brandon name. The Brandons are an affluent African-American family with connections throughout the community and frown upon any type of scandal or hint of anything that will damage their image. With not only her business to worry about, but also her self-serving mother and irresponsible siblings, Dominique has enough balls to juggle around, but things get worse when she becomes the target of a stalker.

Harris Knight is hired to provide bodyguard services to Dominique and immediately they clash. He's pre-labeled her as a snobby, rich, spoiled brat and she's pegged him as a shady character from the wrong side of the tracks. In spite of his hard image, behind the facade is a caring and passionate man who continues to help the rural community he grew up in. He learns that Dominique is actually harboring a determination and strength that he's not used to seeing in women.

As the stalker gets more and more dangerous, Dominique's life is threatened and while she's very loyal to her family, Harris has questions and wonders if they're really the upstanding family they try to project. With an out of control sister who seems set on making Dominique look bad, to her dependent mother who is only concerned with living the life she's become accustomed to, and an Uncle who's tried to buy out Dominique, there are hints of shadiness all around the Brandon clan and Harris is set on getting to the bottom of things; even more so when he starts having feelings for Dominique and vice versa.

THE BODYGUARD was a wonderful entrance into the literary world for Andrea Jackson. As a bonus, it was really nice seeing the normal "we're too different from each other" scenario unfold in this story. It's suspenseful, romantic and the climatic ending, though a bit predictable, wrapped up this novel nicely.

Professional bodyguard Atticus Kodiak is still having trouble dealing with the death of his best friend at the end of Keeper, Greg Rucka's well-received first thriller. So, in this exciting and suprisingly moving sequel, he takes a job as a bouncer at a New York club called The Strap, which caters to the bondage trade. But when the 15-year-old daughter of his former colonel turns up at the club and is menaced by a tough Brit who happens to be an SAS commando, Atticus quickly finds himself back in the action.

    Book Description

Tough, tense and thought provoking, Greg Rucka's incendiary debut, Keeper, proved Rucka intends to change the face of the modern thriller. Now, in Finder, his hero, bodyguard Atticus Kodiak, confronts a case which pits Kodiak against a relentless killer...and his own private demons.

From a chance encounter with a teenage runaway in a seedy S&M club on Manhattan's lower East Side, Atticus Kodiak is forced to seek a missing juvenile, an elusive lover, and a fortune in embezzled funds--and to take a hard look at own tangled life. In doing so, he will step over the line from hired seeker to the target of a sociopath who knows the inner workings of Kodiak's heart better than Kodiak does, trapping him in the ruthless crossfire of duty, honor and twisted love. The result is a remarkable novel extraordinary for its harrowing twists, razor-sharp characters and prose like the ticking of a time bomb about to explode. Finder offers definitive proof that Greg Rucka is among the best suspense novelists writing today.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Fierce.......2006-12-14

I have just started this book, but read Keeper just before this. I agree with several of the reviewers. It's unbeliveable anyone just 28 has had the experiences and adventures of Kodiak. The thing that bothers me most is his indiscriminate love life. He seems to sleep with whomever is handy. And how much older was Erika's mom during their "romance" since he was 24 and Erika was 11. Sounds like Diana was robbing the cradle, but Atticus was more than willing. I too couldn't understand Atticus enlisting the help of all his friends in a protection scheme when no one knew what was going on other than they would be pitted against some of the world's best trained killers. And what was a British team doing there in the first place? Was the retired colonel that important? It doesn't sound from the other reviewers that I will get many answers. I hope there aren't too many 15 yr olds like Erika in this world. If I am naive I'll stay that way thank you.

4 out of 5 stars A Solid Step Up From Comics.......2006-08-21

Greg Rucka, who is best known as a contributor to several comic book series, once again flexes his literary muscles in the second installment of the Atticus Kodiak series. Although the plotting and events border on the improbable, this in part is what helps the book succeed. Like the old saying about life being what happens when you are making other plans, the consequences of the characters actions in this book do NOT always happen the way the reader anticipates them. This adds a touch of reality to this book, that combined with Rucka's tight verbal prose make this an interesting and exciting read, and leave me looking forward to reading more. If you want your formulistic action thriller then you will probably not like this book. However if you want your characters to be fallible and human and struggle to their victories and enjoy lean and well crafted prose- then don't miss FINDER.

4 out of 5 stars Another strong outing for Kodiak.......2004-07-15

(3.5 stars) Picking up three months after the events in KEEPER, Rucka combines another fast-paced plot with some welcome fleshing out of his main protagonist, Atticus Kodiak. Kodiak has issues and I still think he's implausibly young for what he does but this time that actually plays into the story somewhat as his relative inexperience - not to mention his immaturity in dealing with relationships - is highlighted when he comes up against the SAS, in what is basically an extremely over-the-top custody battle.

Like Lawrence Block's Matthew Scudder series, Rucka earns a suspension of disbelief because he's so good at developing his characters. If there's one flaw, it's the same problem KEEPER had, with New York City feeling a little too sterile. The names and places are all correct but there's a certain something missing, that something that Block does so well in making the City a living, breathing character as opposed to simply a backdrop.

All in all, another strong, if flawed, outing and I look forward to reading the next installment in the series.

2 out of 5 stars Builds you up to a big fizzle.......2004-06-17

The book itself is alright, if you dont mind the author's bland, verbose, and tedious writing. But be prepared for a big letdown because the ending of the book is one of the worst I've ever read. I wish someone had warned me, so I'm warning others. I like the characters, but the book doesnt flow fast at all and it really fizzles in the end with no climax, and it was a big dissappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Gritty, With Heart.......2002-09-07

Rucka does certain things masterfully. His dialogue crackles with realism and intensity; his characters breathe down your back, they're so alive; and the emotions he conveys are rich without being melodramatic. Atticus Kodiak, his protaganist, moves in a circle of foul-mouthed, partying friends, yet maintains a style all his own in the midst of the muck about him.

Here, again, Atticus Kodiak is at work as a bodyguard, this time watching over the daughter of his former lover. Erika's all grown up now--or thinks she is--and isn't always hip to the idea of his guardianship. What's truly eating young Erika, though, is the power struggle between her despicable parents. She takes out her frustrations on those sent to protect her, but finds a friend in Kodiak's off-and-on romantic interest, Bridgett. With trained assassins opposing Kodiak's team, the odds seem stacked against him, but he manages to come through...not without some physical and emotional scars along the way.

If you're a fan of G-rated mysteries (in the Mrs. Pollifax vein), steer clear of Kodiak. If you like your mysteries tough and gritty, with a bit of heart (think Dashiell Hammett after the sexual revolution), then give this series a shot.

5 out of 5 stars electrifying romantic suspense.......2004-07-15

Patrician Madeleine Barrington has been visiting politically unstable Montedora selling off her family plantation, but now is trying to leave the country. However, her flight is canceled so she has one more night to spend in Montedora City.

Having completed his assignment for Marino Security International to improve security for the Montedora president, Ransom looks forward to going home tomorrow. He enters the Bar Tige and sees the American female looking sad and drinking alone. Unable to ignore her though that is out of character for him, Ransom joins Madeleine. Out of character for her too, she accepts the company and the twosome share the best night of their lives in this depressed oppressed nation.

When Madeleine has to return to the even more dangerous Montedora to complete the property sale, her concerned father hires Marino Security International to protect his daughter. Ransom is assigned personal security of Madeleine unaware that she is the woman he has not forgotten. As they travel together fighting every step of the way while falling in love, the two Americans are caught in the middle of a deadly civil war with both antagonists wanting to use them as negotiating pawns.

FEVER DREAMS is a reprint of an electrifying romantic suspense adventure starring two wonderful lead protagonists who cannot stay on the same planet together without either fighting or hugging. The story line is action-packed especially when the duo returns to Montedora and never slows down until the final confrontation. Laura Leone (AKA Laura Resnick) has written an exhilarating romantic thriller that sub-genre fans will devour in an invigorating sitting.

After devouring this book in one sitting I was left wondering why this author is not more well known. If this book is indicative of her talents then she should be a star. In other words, Ms. Leone has created a book that has it all: steamy romance, heart stopping action and a hero that is to die for.

Madeleine Barrington the daughter of a wealthy, socially prominent family is shocked to the core when she realizes that the man she has ben dreaming about, the man she had an anonymous one night stand with while on a business trip to south america is the same man her father has hired to accompany her back to that same country as her bodyguard. She has tried in vain to forget that terrible lapse of judgement in which she allowed herself to put her guard down let this stranger see her as no one else ever had before.

On the other hand, Ransom has never been able to forget the woman who gave him the most incredible night of his life. At first he was hurt when he woke up to find her gone after the night they had just spent in each others arms. Later, when he realizes the woman he can't stop thinking about is the same millionaire corporate CEO he has been hired to protect he is furious. He feels she used him and he will not soon forgive her for it. Madeleine is drowning in shame for what she did with the stranger but she has no choice and must let him accompany her and so she sets some ground rules: absolutely no touching and no references to that wild night they spent together. Once they get to Montedora (a fictional country in South America) Madeleine finds herself more and more captivated by this arrogant, surly man but she is determined to keep her distance no matter what his sex appeal. Fate, however, has other plans and Madeleine finds herself a fugitive in a foreign country on the verge of a revolution depending on Ransom for her very life.

What made this book a keeper for me was the chemistry between Madeleine and Ransom. After I closed the book there was no doubt in my mind that these two, despite their social differences, were meant for one another and would definitely live happily ever after. Also, Ms. Leone writes great dialogue and the verbal sparring between the hero and heroine made me laugh out loud in several instances because they sounded so much like an old married couple. In the end, this book came thisclose to being a solid five star read but alas I found that deep in the story the action takes too much away from the romance. However, I still consider this book a keeper. If you love irreverent, arrogant but sweet and sexy heroes pick up this book and I assure you you will not be disappointed. :0)

Madeleine Barrington, of the Barrington Food Products Barringtons, had just finished several frustrating days in Montedora City, Montedora, South America. She was determined to sell her family's plantation and leave the primitive country of Montedora behind her. Unfortunately, years of neglect and political unrest have kept her family's plantation from prospering and Madeleine knows that it will be hard to get rid of. When Madeleine's flight is indefinitely delayed, she is stuck in a rundown hotel in Montedora City, sipping a horrible drink and contemplating what got her into this mess in the first place. When Ransom first sets eyes on the beautiful blonde sitting forlornly at the bar, he knows that she is someone he wants to get to know better. A lot better. Madeleine isn't sure what to make of Ransom and starts to brush him off, but she is inexplicably drawn to him and decides to spend the night with him. It was the most incredible night of passion that Madeleine has ever had - and Ransom feels the same way. However, Madeleine is embarrassed at her lack of control with Ransom and just cannot face him so she sneaks out early in the morning without telling Ransom who she is.

Ransom is furious that his angel left without revealing her identity and tries to find her, but he fails. He vows to leave Montedora behind him and never go back. However, when Marino Security International hires him to act as a bodyguard for a Madeleine Barrington while she completes some business in Montedora, he is forced to take the job. When he discovers that his angel is none other than Madeleine Barrington, he is determined to keep his distance and to let her know that she means nothing to him. Madeleine is stunned at Ransom's arrival and is terrified that he will tell her family about their one night stand. When they arrive in Montedora, she breathes a sigh of relief and gets down to business. But when President Veracruz' military advisor, Escalante, stages a coup, the whole country rises up in rebellion. Madeleine and Ransom find themselves in the middle of a country with no friends and no one to rely on but each other. As they struggle to escape from Montedora, Ransom and Madeleine come to realize that there is more to their love than a one night stand...

This was an enjoyable contemporary romance featuring two strong willed people who started their relationship at the wrong point and the wrong time, but were able to work it out anyway. Madeleine was a particularly engaging heroine as she was practically perfect and never realized how much her striving for perfection alienated her family and those around her. I liked that Ransom loved her because she wasn't perfect and that he taught her that it was okay to make mistakes and get support from those who love you. The supporting characters were also well developed and fun to get to know. The setting was a little too stereotypical poor South American country for me and so the plot was a bit farfetched, but it is a romance, after all. I would have liked to have seen a bit more romance between the two main characters and a bit less abrupt ending, but this book is still well worth your time to find a copy!

5 out of 5 stars Great reading, a real page turner.......1999-09-10

Laura Leone's best book to date. She's found her calling in single title romance. Superb storytelling and use of language. Great comedy, great suspense, great sex, and a great hero - this book has it all. Among the best romances I've ever read!

      5 out of 5 stars A fantastic read!.......1999-08-29

This was one of the fastest, funniest, sexiest romances I've ever read, and intelligent to boot. I've read everything Laura Leone/Resnick has written, both romance and fantasy, and it's all great, but for pure reading fun, Fever Dreams is at the head of my personal list. I love the way Madeline and Ransom connect and strike sparks without either of them being hopelessly neurotic or immature. Just two smart, funny people who seem very different, but ultimately establish believable common ground in the midst of wild adventure. I don't want Laura to give up her epic fantasy novels--but please, a romance now and then also?
