Book Description
In 1979 the Kansas City Chapter of the American Institute of Architects published its first guidebook to the architecture of Kansas City. In the two decades that have followed Kansas City has seen the addition of many outstanding buildings and the loss of several old ones. The Kansas City Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has joined together with the Design Center of Kansas City to publish this celebration of Kansas City architecture. The intent of this book is to give the reader a representative visual image of metropolitan Kansas City through its exceptional buildings, urban design, and contemporary environmental public art.
The reader will findarranged in 12 geographic districtsexamples of the work of some of the area's finest architects and artists, as well as a number of entries by individuals of world renown. At the beginning of each geographic area is a guide map, along with an introduction to the overall significance of the area. As it happens, the geographic divisions tend to parallel closely the patterns of growth and development in Kansas City and recognize the individual styles of Kansas City, Missouri; Independence, Missouri; Kansas City, Kansas; and Johnson County, Kansas.
The content of the new guidebook was based on the 1979 edition, with the recognition that the years since then have produced an abundance of outstanding examples of architecture, most of which speak to a maturing of the art and practice of the architectural profession in Kansas City. Additionally, Kansas City's One-Percent-for-Art Program, given new impetus in the 1980s, have provided a body of public art that enhances many of those examples of recent architecture.

View from the field.......2005-02-25
For some time America's international "war on drugs" has looked like a loser. We have a small shelf of good studies that explain why it isn't having any lasting effect on limiting the drugs reaching U.S. streets. Here at last is a book that tells the other side of the story - the consequences of that war for the supplier countries.
In Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, and the Caribbean it provides insightful, thoroughly-documented research on the "collateral damage" to fragile democracies and the environment caused by U.S. and national anti-drug policies. This is sober, careful analysis, not simplistic outrage. The different authors - from the region and the U.S. - know these countries from up close. They take seriously the problem of illegal drugs for these countries (and the U.S.) and weigh, for example, the differential effects of police, military and judicial approaches. The reader comes away with a good sense of the overall picture but also of the specific national contexts.
This book is also an illuminating point of entry to anyone interested more generally in how U.S. policy is made and its consequences on the ground, away from the headlines. It provides detailed information on all U.S. laws, agencies, and funding relating to drug control in Latin America, with separate chapters on military and police assistance for the region and a final chapter that, in Washington fashion, pulls together concrete, well-conceived recommendations for policy.
Since Ronald Reagan declared illicit drugs a national security threat in 1986, the U.S. "war" against them in Latin America has escalated through four subsequent administrations. This two-decade policy exemplifies in several ways the broader militarization of U.S. foreign policy since the Cold War described by the Washington Post's Dana Priest in "The Mission" - the same penchant to confront complex issues abroad with military means in policies increasingly shielded from congressional scrutiny and public view. This impressive analysis of drugs and democracy in Latin America - the older sibling of the current "war on terror" - will be sobering reading for anyone concerned about what this new global war portends.

In addition to its coverage of agency and partnership, the new edition of Agency and Partnership Law adds coverage of limited liability partnerships and limited liability companies. Because the authors feel that agency law is the foundation on which the law of business firms is built, the second edition retains substantial treatment of both the contract and tort aspects of agency law. Rosin and Closen integrate problems into the text to facilitate teaching by the problem method and introduces a transactional perspective by using problems that ask students to structure transactions so as to achieve client goals while addressing the concerns raised in the materials. The new edition also continues to cover the various unincorporated firms by comparing and contrasting their functional characteristics.

nice compilation of vintage look images for your pages.......2007-10-02
Really nice, the CD lets you pick up the elements you want and use them.
smooth glossy prints though, so the CD does come in handy. As is probably true of the originals, you can see the pixels in the prints sometimes.
The instant memories French pages book has thicker cardstock glossy pages, and slightly higher resolution photos.
Wonderful book.......2007-05-27
This entire series of books "Memories of a Lifetime" is remarkable!! You get ready to use pages for scrapbooking or other craft projects - PLUS, you get a CD in the back of each one with all of the images contained in the books. You can reprint each page exactly as it appears in the book OR you can print the separate components that make up each collage pictured in the book. I have eleven of these books and plan to buy the others. They are amazing to work with. The images are very good quality and are all COPYRIGHT FREE, making them great for resale projects. I just can't say enough about how wonderful these books are. They are well worth the cost.

Book Description
This is the complete English Translation and Update of The Memorial Book of the Jewish Community of Yurburg, Lithuania, originally published in 1991 in Hebrew and Yiddish. The original book, written by survivors and emigres, provides a vivid portrait of Jewish village life in Lithuania as it existed before the Shoah. The book memorializes the richness and depth of the community - its people and its institutions depicting the fabric of history from which Litvaks are descended. All original photos and illustrations are included.
More than 150 pages of new photographs and articles have been added in a new appendix. This material was collected from Yurburg families from all over the world as a result of numerous Internet communications. The new material includes: recently discovered poignant letters and photographs sent from Yurburg to Mexico shortly before the Nazi invasion in June 1941, an honest and thorough account of the murders in Yurburg by a Lithuanian university student in her bachelor's thesis, impressions and photographs from a trip to Yurburg and nearby Sudarg in 2001, the official 1907 map of property plots and list of plot owners and a list of over 300 identifiable headstones in the Yurburg Jewish cemetery in 1995.
The book is hardcover with 740 pages, containing all the photographs and images from the original book plus over 200 photographs new photos collected from all over the world from Yurburgers and from a trip taken to the town in 2001.

... book of loving community and tragedy.......2006-12-09
I know the author/editor of this book, this "collection of stories". I related to him how, when passing through "Jurbarkas" in 1996, that I felt the town was full of spirits, though not haunted. This was before I knew about "Yurburg".
I want to describe the book as "wonderful" but it's a book of loving community and tragedy. I'm of Lithuanian descent and not of Jewish descent. Through family vignettes and "remembrances" the book describes the wonderful contemporary life of the Jewish community in greater Yurburg (Jurbarkas in Lithuanian) in the first half of the 20th century leading up to the destruction of the community by the invading Germans and supportive Lithuanians. When reading this book of love and tragedy, all should remember just how close to savagery each of us are. In Faust the great German philosopher/writer Goethe wrote in describing man, "Er nennt's Vernunft und braucht es nur tierischer als jedes Tier zu sein." ("Man calls it reason and uses it only to be more animalistic than any animal.") Certainly, every educated German, moreso then than now, read and has read Goethe's Faust. How ironic that Goethe's words presaged the conduct of German "civility", that unleashed the massacre of the Jewish communities in the Holocaust.
This book, as well as being the story of a community, is testimony to the tragic savagery of mankind. I treasure my copy.
Jurburg: a Definitive Yitzkor Book.......2004-04-20
Joel Alpert has set a new benchmark for Yitzkor books and memorial projects with his editing of this work. The abundance of photos, records, personal accounts, and other research materials are well organized. The translation of original Yiddish and Hebrew first person narratives and memories is valuable for future generations and researchers who may lack Yiddish and Hebrew reading skills. As for families whose ancestors came from Yurburg, this book is a must for their children. It is a blessing of memories for them. The work also can be used as an ongoing and living project for families of Jurburg descent. The book has openned up doors of research in finding unknown relatives and in putting together puzzles of our own family history. It may be worth while for other older Yitzkor books to be re-edited, translated and expanded in the fashion of Joel Alpert. This book is a must read and a model for any Yitzkor yet to be published.
The Wonderful Book on Yurburg.......2004-04-19
I found this book extremely moving and most informative. I have been to Lithuania twice, I've walked on the streets of Yurburg, I've done alot of genealogy, however, I had never before seen this wonderful photo of the brother of my great grandfather. This book corroborated much of what I knew and gave me alot of information I had not been able to learn, either from the archives in New York, or even from the archives in Vilna. The book is a treasure and I am most grateful to Joel Alpert.
A Remarkable Story.......2003-11-26
This is a wonderful book. Imagine my surprise to find a book on the Internet of the memories of inhabitants of Jurbarkas, my father's childhood town in Lithuania! The book was mostly in Hebrew, but a partial translation in English was available on the Internet for anyone to read. Over the last decade, Joel Alpert arranged for the book's complete English translation and placed it on the Internet. Mr. Alpert has also added additional information and photographs from his extended family and others and assembled it into an easy-to-read, 737-page text. The text includes a 1907 census of Jewish landowners in Jurbarkas and a map plotting their properties. There's also a University of Vilnius bachelor's thesis about the Holocaust in Jurbarkas, written by Ruta Puisyte that lists some of the victims and perpetrators of the destruction of Jurbarkas' Jewish community in September 1941. I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in the Jewish experience in Lithuania or during the Holocaust.
A Touching Rememberance.......2003-11-21
Joel Alpert has produced a legacy to be handed down from generation to generation. When your immigrant family members are gone and the stories are buried with them, you can turn to this book and remember what it must have been like to live in a village in Lithuania during those good and bad days.

SO worth it! You can use these images for cards, scrapbooks, altered books, the options are endless! You'll need them all (ok, WANT them all) ;)
Customer Reviews:
A little too "cute".......2007-05-11
I first purchased the two Anna Corba books and absolutely LOVED them. Each and every element is presented as either a 72 or 220 dpi image on the included CD. I loved her layouts and the use of ephemerial elements. This version is a little too cute for my tastes, but the elements are still available on the CD. If you want a quieter, more elegant style, stick with the Anna Corba books.
Regardless, you will not waste your money with any of the Instant Memories series, each edition contains so many pieces...my mind boggles at all the delicious collage and scrapping opportunities.
Another beautiful additon.......2006-01-22
I am adddicted to "Instant Memories." I must buy all of their publications. Sure, I have been disappointed, especially "Christmas," but all of their other publications are great. Their two latest, "Love" and "Family" are, by far, their best.
If you are a clip art junkie, you have come to the right place. These two volumes are especially beautiful and unique.
I am not a fan of computer scrapping. The items in this volume can be used for this. I am tactile. This web art clearly shows how you can adapt their designs real time. I have used some of their items for print out. They are beautiful and intensely colored and add beauty to any page.
I've rarely thought about being a salesperon for anything, but these publications make me think twice.
