5 out of 5 stars Proud great niece!!.......2007-06-19

I first saw this book in a Borders and looked in it on a whim. Knowing that my great uncle had be awarded the medal of honor. I was happily surprised that he was in there (pg. 223) and even more to find he is also on the CD! My son never got to meet him since he passed away just before my son turned one so now I have a way of showing my son what his family has done! Great book many other great heroes in it. I will be buying more for my family and friends.

Not worth the price. It was a disappointment. It does not cover all the Medal of Honor recipient. It is incomplete. How can you forget Audi Murphy the most decorated person of any war.

4 out of 5 stars Watch for charitiesand their people.......2006-06-14

This book is great read it. Most charities are perfect and do their job. A few years ago I was asked by a friend debbie Davis to give a book for an auction for the charity called Equest in Lyman Maine. I bought a brand new book called Seabiascuit and gave it to debbie for the charity. She never gave the book to the charity but kept it . I found out a year later. Also My contribution of 25.oo dollars the next year was also kept. I investigate charities now . Give directly to the head people.

4 out of 5 stars A Helpful and Inspiring Guideline for Social Ministry.......2003-04-21

This book is a philosophy and outline for ministry among the American poor, emphasizing the role of God's people in moving beyond charity to uplifting ministry based on building relationships and program development within communities. The book is divided into three sections consisting of vision (for ministry that goes beyond charity), gospel (bridging theology with specific practices of ministry), and messenger (directed towards those considering a role in these types of ministry).
Good: The book is founded on Perkins' years of personal experience and knowledge of social ministry in helping at-risk populations and improving neighborhoods. The stories he shares of ministry successes in Pasadena, CA and Mendenhall, MS are powerful and compelling, as are the numerous people he cites that have had similar successes. Also particularly useful are his six marks of an authentic church, his eight factors that create an environment of hope in communities, and his chapter on discerning God's will.
Bad: Perkins has a definite anti-welfare and conservative political perspective, which is noticable in a few places. This is coupled with the fact that he is writing primarily to church-folk who are interested in church ministries, and leads to a total neglect of prescription for government involvement in the fight to reduce poverty and produce justice. Perkins needs to be more biblically-based in this regard - see Psalm 72. Lobbying for governmental involvement is important for impacting the structural base of poverty.
Opinion: In spite of the one significant area of disagreement mentioned above, this is an invaluable handbook for Christian social ministry. I recommend it without reservation.
Best Quote: I believe there is only one group of people in society who can overcome these obstacles [to solutions of urban poverty]. God's people have solutions that are qualitatively different from any other approach to the poor. The best that God's people have to offer is relationships with the poor that reflect the kind of careful, quality attention we have in our own families. This is the high quality of relationships offered by people seeking to "love their neighbor as themselves."

5 out of 5 stars The Call.......2000-06-02

My story about how I read this book is very interesting. I remember asking Rev. Lockhart for donations to go on a 'missions' trip which would last for 10 days. He answered my request instead by asking me for money. Little did I know that he was a missionary in Atchison, KS. He and his small congregation were sprawling out their lives for the realization of the Christian community in Atchison. For the past five years of my Christian walk, my picture of missions work has been radically transformed from an American version to that of true obedience like Jesus had. Peter was called by Jesus to feed his sheep. The question is this: How can I feed sheep if I am not interacting with the sheep on a daily basis? True shepherds step in the mess on the sheep and continue to work. John Perkins writes from a truly selfless sacrifice for the sake of Christ. He has actually lived out that which he has written - for that reason my ears perk up. As a teacher, I told my high school class that if they want to participate in missions, they MUST READ Beyond Charity by John Perkins.

5 out of 5 stars identifying motives for inner-city ministry.......1998-10-02

Perkins causes his readers to question their motives for giving to the poor, including calling them to the important task of relocation. A deep committment is required for community development and Perkins thoughtfully discusses development from a biblical basis.

Guru of enlightenment Andrew Cohen has a radical message of evolutionary advancement. In Living Enlightenment, Cohen continues the work of his previous books and his magazine on the same topic--that enlightenment is available here and now but involves a radical transformation of both outlook and behavior. Like Krishnamurti, Cohen is relentless in his commonsense approach to spirituality, insisting that enlightenment means a complete relinquishment of the ego. This naturally leads to nonattachment, humility, responsibility, and love. In enlightenment, one's perspective shifts from the personal to the impersonal, and this means a deepening of, rather than a distancing from, constructive relationships. Although Cohen comes out of the Indian tradition, his language is thoroughly modern, with very little jargon and no references to world religions. He has a tendency to be vague on the details, but his invitation to enlightenment is clear and his challenge refreshing. --Brian Bruya

Book Description

Living Enlightenment offers a radically authentic spirituality for the twenty-first century. Engaging with some of the most challenging questions facing seekers today, this groundbreaking book illuminates the simple yet profound understanding that the spiritual evolution of each one of us is not separate from the evolution of humanity as a whole. Andrew Cohen guides us to the threshold of our highest potential, and calls on each of us to take the crucial next step. Infused with the wisdom of the ages yet expressing a wholly contemporary vision, Living Enlightenment redefines the very purpose of spiritual life for the modern Western seeker.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars All ego.......2006-06-16

I agree with the recent reviewers and those mysteriously wiped off recently and no longer here to see that dared criticise him. The problem with Cohen is his complete insecurity. He cannot for a moment bear any criticism but requests complete adulation. I read his books and attended one of his lectures. Never again. He is total ego and loves laughing at people making fun of them in front of others while he has the microphone. I know he desparately seeks enlightenment himself but surely this is not the way Andrew. Try to be nice to people.

1 out of 5 stars Just Another Campus Guru.......2006-05-30

Andrew Cohen reminds me of the polished BS throwers who used to hang around the student center endlessly debating meaningless questions and trying to impress the chicks.

Anyone with a decent Jesuit education will have covered everything Cohen has to say in the first two semesters...and forgotten about it the following year.

Like those campus philosophers Cohen relies on hyperbolic language and circular reasoning to talk enlessly about nothing and make it sound profound.

The amazing thing is that there are people who believe they have heard him actually say something... just like those people who swore the emperor was actually wearing clothes.

3 out of 5 stars wait a minute folks..........2005-09-20

how has Cohen and his cult members managed to wipe out every critical customer review of this book??? Cohen's Living Enlightenment is good in theory, but ask his ex-students what "living" under Cohen's authoritarian ideas for your enlightenment was like -- not so wonderful?

5 out of 5 stars "if you knew what it was..........2004-01-13

...you wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole."

that famous quote from J. Krishnamurti is used by the author of "Living Enlightenment," Andrew Cohen (who is also the editor of "What Is Enlightenment?" magazine), to emphasize the enormity of the task of ego-transcendence, and seems to be the basic theme of this incredible book. despite what people like Eckhart Tolle are leading thousands of seekers to believe these days, it is Mr. Cohen's contention that attaining the goal of spiritual life--i.e., enlightenment, awakening, liberation--is much more than a matter of finding "portals to the now" or remaining "mindful." why? because according to him, "true freedom is an all-or-nothing deal. that's just the way it is--it's a spiritual law." (p. 56) and furthermore, he spells out in a remarkably inspiring way the logical fact that the attainment of an ego-transcended state is NOT for the person who attains it. if the individual claimed enlightenment just for themselves and their personal happiness and freedom, there'd obviously still be ego there. rather, the whole point of attaining enlightenment is only for the service of the "evolution of consciousness itself." (p. 123)

i don't know about you, but this stuff gets me excited. Cohen is describing life on the spiritual path as a truly cosmic pursuit--something bigger than our post-modern world could possibly handle (as some of the more cynical reviews posted here testify to). "the whole point," he says, "is that the realization of enlightenment completely destroys the status quo. it blows it to pieces. if you are lucky enough to actually succeed in your quest for liberation in this life then you will become a completely transformed human being and, believe me, you will be seeing things very differently." (pp. 23-24) this stuff is the real deal, folks. even the way the words are written on the page has a simplicity and authority about them that gives a direct transmission of Cohen's enlightened vision and passion. so read it. and live it. because if you don't make the effort to wake up and obliterate the status quo of this world to create a new possibility, who will?

5 out of 5 stars No turning back.......2004-01-11

I have read many spiritual books, yet I don't know of any other that has affected me the way this one has. Andrew Cohen communicates with simplicity and precision, yet also with suprising depth and subtlety. I found myself disturbed and intrigued reading this - as many (most!)of my ideas about enlightenment were deeply shaken, replaced by a growing seriousness and demand to live a different and extraordinary human life. The fact that this was the result of reading this book should not have suprised me after reading the foreword by Ken Wilber,in which he warns us that Andrew Cohen is a serious teacher, but what did suprise me is how it seemed to happened. Just reading it, did it. By the time I realized I was intrigued, it was already too late - this book is that experiental. It has actually changed the way I view and think about life, and I find myself deeply grateful. I look forward to reading more from this man.

Book Description

In the spring of 1997, Nancy Conley's life was grinding to a halt. She had divorced three years prior, her two sons were nearly raised, and her relationship with the man she was dating seemed to be going nowhere. Her professional life as a spiritual director for women's groups was at a standstill as well. Nancy intuitively knew she needed a challenge to catapult her into the next phase of her life, but nothing seemed to answer her heart's call. When a travel brochure entitled "A Shamanic Journey to Ecuador" arrived at her door and she felt her heart stir, she knew this was it, but the physical, psychological, and spiritual dangers inherent in the journey filled her with fear. Saying yes took all the courage she could muster. Call of My Heart: The Journey to Ecuador and Beyond is the story of Nancy's life-changing adventure into the mystical world of shamanism and the uncharted waters of her own heart and soul. Surrounded by powerful natural and supernatural forces, an ancient memory is awakened. From beneath layers of misconceptions, wounds, and fear, Nancy unearths her essential nature and rediscovers her rightful place as a beloved creature of life itself. Through a profound shift in consciousness, she experiences a rebirth into a richer, freer, more meaningful way of life.

      Book Description

      Foreword by Howard John Loewen

As our lives become complex with the demands of our affluent and accelerating society, do we hear the gospel's timeless and insistent call to live the "obedience of faith"? In these three "sermonic essays" Eldin Villafañe takes on the task of awakening true obedience of faith through the themes of discipleship, incarnation, and justice.

Beginning with discipleship, Villafañe draws on the "Christ hymn" of Philippians 2 to challenge Christians to choose the costly Christ-life. He then offers six contrarian perspectives on the incarnation from the early church as correctives to our current, culturally conditioned theological emphases. Finally, taking the book of Amos as a touchstone, Villafañe issues a call for just leadership among the nations.

Adding interest and depth to this work are an insightful foreword by Dean Loewen and thoughtful responses by Richard Peace, Juan Francisco Martinez, and Veli-Mattí Kärkkäinen. Villafañe's Beyond Cheap Grace incisively extends Christ's call to discipleship, incarnation, and justice to the church, the academy, and Christian leaders of all traditions.

Providing close air support to ground troops in Vietnam was hazardous anytime, but on March 10, 1966, the Special Forces in the old French Fortress of Ashau were in particular trouble as the Viet Cong closed in. When an American airman went down, his death was a near certainty. That's when Major Bernie Fisher had a decision to make: leave the pilot to his fate or undertake a near-suicidal landing to help him out. Bernie's decision made him just one of sixteen members in the history of the Air Force to earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The book is written by a retired Miami-Dade area detective turned author. His story is very entertaining and at the same time educational for someone interested in the law enforcement career. Analysis of the inside workings of the police force is very strong and knowledgable thanks to his own experiences. The book is excellent reading for all interested in crime stories.

As a retired Miami Dade Officer I couldn't put this book down. I never have bothered with fiction but because I knew Marshall when he was with Miami Dade I bought "Beyond The Call." It was great. There was suspense, excitement and enough reality to keep me going. I finished it off in two days and I believe I worked with all the officers of this great fictious Novel. Are you on the job? If you are, read, "Beyond The Call."

This is one of the best books I ever read, my wife and I both were very impressed with the story. It was fascinating to read about what really goes on in a metropolitan police department and after reading a few chapters we couldn't put the book down. We are both looking forward to reading another book by the same author.

4 out of 5 stars beyond the call, beyond the ordinary.......2000-04-16

I found the book very easy to read. The type of book I kept at, always wanting to know what will come next. I am not an avid reader & am easily discouraged while reading a book that is slow. This book seems to be rooted in truth & the experience of the author. I found it hard to put down & have recommended it to my friends. A very exciting story.
