Best book I've ever read of things that should be said........2007-02-04
In my 61 years of male life experiences, this is my favorite book, for it puts to words human ideals that are so beneficial for people of all ages to understand.
I found this book by chance in a used book store and bought it to read, to reflect on my experiences with my two sons and two step-children. Immediately I realized that Kent had put to words the things I had wanted to say to my children, but didn't know how to express it.
I then bought 30 copies, giving them to my children and friends with children. I read it again, this time calling Kent and thanking him for writing his thoughts for me to share with others whom I love.
I'm here at Amazon again, sending a link to Kent's Letters to a friend, who's husband has died, leaving their teenage son so alone. I'm constantly recommending this book, as well as quoting from it to share thoughts with others. When my brother-in-law died a couple months ago, Kent's thoughts on Tragedy and Suffering were most comforting to my sister and her in-laws. I know Kent's thoughts on Falling In Love I've shared with others has mended many a broken hearts.
Kent's dedication page statement - "We are born male. We must learn to be men." implies it's a book for guys to read, but I know many gals who have found it a valuable read.
I was just on a lengthy trip, with a number of extended layovers. Knowing this, of all I could have chosen to bring to read to make that time most worthwhile, I brought Letters to my Son. And I'll read it again and again.
For years I've thought that too often people read one book after another, searching for something very meaningful to be made know to them. Here is a book I believe, if read a number of times in a thoughtful way, and taken to heart, it will be the most satisfying read ever. I've become certain that it's good enough to last my lifetime.
Father to Son to..............2006-02-28
I gave this book to my husband to give to our older son.
My husband liked it so much that he asked that I get
another for our younger son.
All seem to enjoy it very much.

a new father's best gift.......2004-11-17
I am 26 and I just became a father. I still feel like a kid myself. Someone gave me this book for a birthday present. I read it to see if these were letters I would send my son. They are not really letters but more like essays or thoughts. This man says so many things I wish I could say. He helps me understand what is important in my life, what is important to teach my boy when he gets old enough. I don't always agree with Kent Nerburn's thinking. But I think he is very wise. I wish my dad was like him. I hope I can be a dad like him. He knows what is important in life. He doesn't just preach or lecture. He unfolds his thinking with stories from his own life. Sometimes he made mistakes and he tells us. He learned. Now he is teaching me so I can teach my son.
Thanks, Kent Nerburn. You tell a good truth.
Disappointed.......2004-10-18
This book is nice, sweet, and somewhat insightful. But I wanted a book that spoke more of the relationship between a father and a son. The vast majority of essays/chapters in this book could have been written by anyone for anyone. For example, Nerburn warns of the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and extols the virtues of giving. But those lessons could have been taught by a mother to her daughter, a priest to a parishioner, or an uncle to a nephew. Many other essays in the book are similar in that they contain no unique perspective on the father-son relationship. (What does the "Power of Art" have to do with fatherhood?) This book reads like Chicken Soup for the Soul. In my opinion, the other reviews overrate this book.
The perfect gift.......2004-07-24
Over the years I have had read numerous books of this nature, but always find myself returning to read a section, a paragraph or a few pages. A wonderful book that I have had the opportunity to share with numerous friends. I think I have purchased at least 20 copies a gifts.
A must read.

Book Description
The first book to focus on the day-to-day experiences of adolescents dealing with sexual identity issues, Always My Child provides the insights and practical strategies parents need to support their kids and cope themselves.
Parents whose children are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or who are going through a "questioning phase" are often in the dark about what their children face every day. As a result, offering support that will comfort and fortify them feels like solving a puzzle with missing pieces.
In Always My Child, Kevin Jennings supplies the missing pieces by guiding parents through the world their child inhabits. He explains what these teens often encounter -- teasing and harassment -- and offers solutions for parents who want to better understand their LGBTQ children and learn how to protect their self-esteem. He offers advice, including how to:
- Initiate constructive communication with their child
- Respond effectively to frequently asked questions
- Recognize depression and signs of drug abuse and harassment
- Successfully advocate for their child's well-being outside the home
Always My Child makes it possible for parents to create the kind of relationship with their children that allows them to grow into emotionally healthy adults.

It was very informative, and accurate.......2007-09-16
It was very informative, and accurate. I, who am gay and recently just came out, bought this item for my parents.
Excellent resource book.......2007-01-10
This book is a very important resource and source of information for a parent of a LGBT child. It provides insight and "answers" to many questions parents overwhelmingly have when told that their child is LGBT. It is an excellent book for both the parent and son/daughter to read. Thoughtfully presented and well written.
Always My Child: A Parent's Guide to Understanding Your Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered or Questioning Son or Daughter.......2006-03-09
This is an honest and on the mark book for parents about LGBTQ children and teens. It addresses issues important to the LGBTQ son or daughter and gives practical advice to the parent about acceptance and understanding.
Excellent guide for EVERY parent.......2004-09-02
Kevin Jennings, Executive Director of GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network) has co-authored the definitive book on guiding, understanding, and - hopefully - accepting in love your GLBTQ child. It is primarily targeted toward parents struggling to help and deal with their questioning or coming out teenage child.
This book is not specifically about dealing with transgender children, although there are about 30 pages devoted to dealing with issues and problems of Trans teens. It also talks to people of color and includes young peoples' input to parents. Cultural messages of gender and sexuality are discussed and techniques of dealing with these messages are offered for consideration.
Many of the popular myths about homosexuality and transgenderism are analyzed, with facts presented to aid in accepting and understanding. Suggestions are provided for dealing with friends, your teen's friends, neighbors, and coworkers. Signs of trouble are discussed, along with suggestions for helping your teen deal with them.
While the advice is directed toward sexual and gender diversity, the advice applies to dealing with any youth. The principles of dealing with children apply globally.
So what is the secret? The title says it best - "Always My Child." Your child's needs come first, no matter what. Love your child; don't pressure them, but encourage them to discus their feelings, fears, and problems.
An outstanding resource.......2003-12-11
This amazing guide will help parents navigate the challenges of connecting with a GLBTQ child and becoming an integral and supportive part of that child's life. With chapters on school harassment, drug abuse, and depression, this book also addresses the negative and sometimes self-destructive behaviors of our youth, but gives hope and tools to help heal these wounds. "Always My Child" is especially notable for its chapters on transgender issues and multicultural issues that previous guides didn't include. I was also excited about the chapter on youth questioning their sexuality (straight and gay and in-between), and how parents can be supportive in that as well, because this isn't something many acknowledge. Jennings and Shapiro have created a marvelous resource that will help not only parents, but anyone interested in helping our youth, both queer and nongay, create positive lives.

Loved it!.......2007-05-27
Read it in a couple of days. Great book for Moms and/or single moms. I have renewed faith that I can raise my boy to be a good man even if I'm the closest thing to it in his life!
Must Read.......2007-03-21
This is a must read for moms who have boys. It was very eye opening! I grew up in a home with only girls and had no idea on some of the ways boys think. It is hard raising boys in today's society. We need to be raising our boys to be men, something that is very lacking today. The book does seem geared towards single moms, but don't let that discourage you from reading. It applies to ALL mothers, single or not.
This has been an amazing read!.......2006-04-22
This is simply the best. As it is combined with the seminar you give, "Courageous Moms Raising Boys to Become Good Men", this will be a world changer! I am so glad to have heard about you and your work. Thank you for the easy to read, deeply insightful book. You have given many woman hope whither they are single, married, grandma's or teachers, the insight and wisdom is refreshing! I'll be looking forward to reading your next book.
THE "ONE" BOOK EVERY MOTHER MUST READ.......2006-04-22
Being a full-time mom today is anything but politically correct. Our culture has reduced mothering to a side dish, a mere part of the meal. But, the truth is that motherhood IS a full-time vocation which requires more devotion than any career or pursuit. It is a job from which a woman never retires, a title which a woman will keep into eternity. And, today, who needs mothers most? Our young men. Boys in our culture are under attack like never before, and the men of the previous generation are failing as husbands, fathers and leaders.
If you're a mom and you're passionate about raising your son to be a man of character, a man of integrity, a man of virtue, a leader then you must read "That's My Son".
There are a plethora of wonderful Christian books about raising boys, from Robert Lewis' "Raising A Modern Day Knight" to Steve Farrar's "King Me". But, none of them are written specifically for the woman of the home, the mother. Mr. Johnson has filled that void and done it comprehensively.
There are only three parenting books that I keep in my library, to reference again and again. "The Mission of Motherhood" and "The Ministry of Motherhood" by Sally Clarkson and "That's My Son" by Rick Johnson.
Moms of Boys need to read this one!.......2006-03-26
I was browsing through a Christian bookstore shelves, looking for a really good book for a friend of mine who is going through a divorce when I happened to see this one. I bought it thinking, oh I won't get to read it sooner than later. I was wrong. I picked it up the next week and finished it in a week in between reading other books. (This book was the only one that I finished that week!)
It is informative and helpful. It is filled with practical tips on women raising boys, especially if you're a single mom. It explains the differences between boys and girls. It touched a little bit on the society's expectations of boys and what went wrong with men today. It is not a massive volume of information but it is a start and a guide. It is also a bible study guide (where do people find those kinds of bible studies? I'd like to know because no one around here uses these kinds of topics for bible studies!).
I have two boys and I am very close to them. Right now, since their dad works second shift and they're in school from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. ~~ they don't get to see their dad except for an hour in the morning. I know that in the future that I will have to be the one doing the grunt work while my husband's working. That doesn't mean that he won't be involved with them because he will be. It just means that he won't be able to break away from his job as easily and I will have to deal with the coaches, the teachers and so on. This book is definitely a helpful guide in what to do (like not running to the coach everytime my kid gets hurt or do the work for my son and so on). It shows a basic guideline in teaching the boys how to be responsible and how to be men of characters. And it is immensely helpful for this mom who is used to be surrounded by women all of her life.

Brings the RSB into layman's terms........2007-01-01
Don't let the title scare you mothers away. "Listen My Son: St. Benedict for Fathers" brings the reader through the Rule of Saint Benedict, (RSB), by way of a brief daily reading that explains each section as it would be applicable in any parent's life today. The entire RSB is read within one year's time.
It is often said that child birth comes without any instruction manual. "Listen My Son: St. Benedict for Fathers" can be that manual.
This would make an excellent gift for a new parent.
thoughtful, helpful book.......2004-06-25
Dr. Longenecker's meditations on the rule of St. Benedict are both inpirational and pragmatic. This book offer a useful re-tooling and reapplication of these essentially monastic directives for use in family life. It makes me want to work more dilligently at being a better father and person.
Excellent initial experience with St. Benedict.......2004-01-25
My mother gave this book to all her sons (including me) for Christmas a year ago. This was my first exposure to Saint Benedict and his Rule. At that time I had very little exposure to the monastic life. As I read this book I could really begin to appreciate the devout nature of Benedict and his followers. It is clear that these men who give up their lives for Christ, these monks, truely have a calling to this vocation.
I really liked the interpretation that went along after each rule by Dr. Longenecker. This was especially valuable as I had not been experienced these teachings before. I highly reccommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about the contemplative life.
as a mother.......2002-07-15
As a mother, I was intrigued by the title of this book, and now wish that I had read it long ago, when my children were younger. The advice is age-old and not just for fathers, rather, it is inspiring for all adults, but especially parents trying to keep a family together in these chaotic days.
high marks..........2002-07-09
As any who have read an ancient work in translation will tell you, any commentary that is included can be a blinding distraction, or the most illuminating aspect of the literature. In this case, Longenecker's accompanying prose is surely the latter. Benedict's Rule is related to the work of a father with practiced ease and grace. The work is profoundly instructive.
In fact, my only gripe is with the slightly unwieldy, slightly overlong introduction. Though it should by no means be skipped, I remember feeling a little anxious to get on to St. Benedict. Very high marks though, I thoroughly recommend this book to any father, or mother for that matter.
Book Description
Milan, 1497. The height of the Renaissance. And for Giacomo, servant of the famous painter Leonardo da Vinci, it's the most difficult time of all. His Master has been working on the Last Supper, his greatest painting ever, for nearly two years. But has he finished it? He's barely started! The all-powerful Duke of Milan is demanding that it be completed by the time the Pope visits at Easter. And Giacomo knows that if Leonardo doesn't pick up his pace, the Duke may invite a young genius -- Michelangelo -- to finish the painting instead. Which means that Leonardo won't be paid, which means that Milan's shopkeepers (to whom he owes massive amounts) will take drastic measures against him.
It's all down to Giacomo, and whether he can come up with a brilliant solution. And if he does, will his Master go for it? After all, Leonardo still doesn't seem to trust him. He refuses to teach Giacomo how to paint; he won't help him find his parents; nor will he discuss the significance of the medallion, ring, and cross that Giacomo was carrying when Leonardo found him. But with the secret arrival of a powerful stranger, Giacomo is about to discover much more than the answers he has been looking for. And he will also receive an invitation to help arrange a meeting that could change his life. . . and the future course of history.
With more twists and turns than a spiral staircase, this thriller is as unique as its two heroes -- the most celebrated artist who ever lived, and a young man without a past, who will stop at nothing to find the truth about his life.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-09-24
Leonardo da Vinci hasn't worked on the fresco of the Last Supper in two years. His supporters are most unhappy with his progress. Payments for da Vinci have stopped, but that does not stop the da Vinci household from running up debts all over town.
The shopkeepers are starting to refuse more credit on his accounts.
The Duke of Milan and da Vinci have a history of playful disagreements. However, the Duke makes no secret that he's asked the rival artist Michaelangelo to town. With threats at his doorstep and the Pope coming to the chapel in the near future, da Vinci gets to work.
LEONARDO'S SHADOW shares the story of the creation of the Last Supper through the eyes of da Vinci's servant, Giacomo. Grey spins a wonderful tale of historical fiction for anyone who's interested in the Italian Renaissance.

Why won't Da Vinci finish The Last Supper?.......2007-09-18
Giacomo is the servant of the great Leonardo Da Vinci. Several years ago, a mob was chasing him through the streets, convinced he had stolen someone else's possessions. That night, Da Vinci saved Giacomo's life. Ever since then, Giacomo has served Da Vinci faithfully and almost comically. Whenever anyone even hints that they are insulting his master, Giacomo is right there defending his honor, although it is most unsuitable for him to speak to his superiors.
His greatest ambition is to paint and learn from his master. But Da Vinci seems reluctant to teach him. Giacomo spends his days waiting on Da Vinci, hanging out with his small circle of apprentice friends, and bugging his master to finish the painting The Last Supper. Why won't Da Vinci finish the painting? The Da Vinci household has been buying food, clothing, and art supplies on a credit basis only, but the business owners are beginning to be impatient for actual money. More importantly, the Duke of Milan is most impatient for him to finish the work. Why, any day now, the Pope will visit. The Duke is hoping that the Pope will be impressed with the painting enough that he will remain an ally to the city of Milan against the French. But there may be no peace if the painting is not completed on time!
But Giacomo has much more on his mind. Who are his parents? What was in his knapsack that the mob was angry about? Is he, indeed, a common thief? Will he ever learn to paint? How will he and his master eat with no money? Is the master hiding secrets from him? Can Giacomo discover them?
Giacomo is no ordinary servant, you will soon see . . .
I loved this book! It was funny, educational, and fast-paced. Giacomo is a lively character that boys will relate to easily. It has just the right amount of details--enough for us to be able to enter Giacomo's world but not enough that it overwhelms the story. This tale is full of suspense, intrigue, and hidden secrets just waiting to be discovered. Once I started it, I just couldn't stop. This is unusual for me. To tell you the truth, it is hard for me to find time to read. During my lunch breaks at the library, I eagerly opened Leonardo's Shadow to see what trouble Giacomo would get into today.
With all of the interest in secrets societies and The Da Vinci Code, this book practically sells itself.
A Trip Back in time!.......2007-08-26
Giacomo has no recollection of his past since the day he fell from the top of Milan's Cathedral. Thank goodness Leonardo da Vinci was there to rescue him from the fall as well as the mob chasing him. That is how Giacomo came to be Leonardo's servant...pure chance.
Leonardo da Vinci is contracted by the Duke of Milan, to paint the most amazing mural that eyes will ever behold; The Last Supper. It has been almost two years since the first brush stroke, and not many more have been made since then. The Duke grows tired of waiting and warnes da Vinci that the painting must be done by Easter for the Pope, and if not then he will hire Michelangelo to finish the Last Supper. The Duke also lays threat to Giacomo, and if the information is not reported to the Duke within a week, who knows what lay in wait for poor Giacomo.
Giacomo seeks answers from his Master, regarding his past, his parents, and the three items he had the day Leonardo saved him. But to no avail his Master will not speak. There are secrets hidden that will surface all in due time. When the carriage bearing the same emblem as the medallion Giacomo has passes in front of him, he grows even more curious of his past.
Can Giacomo betray his Master to the Duke in hopes of saving himself from a beating as well as find the answers he most desperately seeks? Or will he be true to Leonardo da Vinci and suffer the consequences? Giacomo seeks many answers throughout this book, come and discover what secrets he may find.
Mr. Grey captivates me with the extraordinary characters painted in this book. Leonardo's Shadow was an experience in the life of Leonardo da Vinci's servant that I am sure not to forget. All through this book there were twists and turns that will keep you biting your nails and on the edge of your seat.
Mr. Grey deems Leonardo's Shadow: Or, My Astonishing Life as Leonardo da Vinci's Servant a fantasy book for Young Adults, but I enjoyed it very much. It could easily be enjoyed by adults as well. I think Christopher Grey deserves 5 hearts, because I know a lot of research and heart went into this book.
15th Century Milan, Italy comes alive for you.......2007-07-19
Giacomo is a servant boy without a past. But he's not just anybody's servant. He is Leonardo da Vinci's servant.
Master daVinci rescued Giacomo when he was only eight, and he as been a servant to the great painter since. But now it has been two years since da Vinci began work on The Last Supper, and as far as Giacomo can tell, virtually no progress has been made. While creditors come pounding on their door, the Duke of Milan harasses Giacomo and his master, and the great Leonardo da Vinci holes himself up to work on who-knows-what. Will Giacomo find the answers to the many questions that plague him?
This fascinating "historical thriller" gives life and breath to Milan at the end of the fifteenth century. Based on an obscure servant mentioned in Leonardo's Notebooks and plenty of gaps in Leonardo da Vinci's life, Grey weaves together a riveting story of what could have been in the years leading up to the completing of Leonardo's masterpiece, The Last Supper.
I know very little of this time period or of Leonardo da Vinci's works, but I now find myself wanting to know a great deal more. I couldn't quit turning pages from the first chapter. The only thing that made me want to put down the book was the continual references to art pieces. I need to find a picture of the piece so I really know what he wrote about.
One thing I especially enjoyed was that a reproduction of The Last Supper is on the hardcover of the book, without so much as a book title marring its surface so I could flip to it time and time again as he referred to aspects of the painting.
If you aren't into art, you will be.
Armchair Interviews says: Hands down, this is a great read for young and old alike.
BEST HISTORICAL FICTION BOOK EVER.......2007-07-01

Its very intreguing, exspecially the ending. I actually read it in two days because it was so good! (but i didn't finnish all my work and got yelled at!)

The title of the first chapter of this workbook, printed in a wavy, spooky font, is "What's Happening to You?" Appropriate, when you think about the emotional and physical changes wrought in a boy's body as he enters puberty. Based on the bestselling classic by mother-daughter team Lynda Madaras and Area Madaras, What's Happening to My Body? Book for Boys, this workbook by the same authors uses games, drawings, photographs, quizzes, personal stories, checklists, and other activities to help boys learn about the transformations that will take place in their bodies during puberty. Similar to the My Body, My Self for Girls workbook, but with a more masculine slant (and obviously, a lot of different information), this is an invaluable resource for boys with questions, curiosity, and a need for reassurance. Topics covered include skin and hair changes, body image, acne, reproductive organs, voice changes, masturbation, and more. Although What's Happening to My Body? explores these issues in greater detail, this workbook enables boys to delve into the nitty-gritty of puberty on a more personal level. One exercise, called "Racewriting," asks boys to write--whatever comes into their heads and as fast as they can--about their feelings about growing up. Then there's the "Test Your I.Q. with This P.Q." true-false puberty quiz. Tremendously useful side features list acne do's and don'ts, ways to cope with erections ("wear baggy pants and long shirts if they keep happening, just remember that it's probably more noticeable to you than to anyone else"), and dangerous side effects of steroids. Written in a lively, nonthreatening style, the authors have placed a strong emphasis on honest, straight talk about the concerns that boys are bound to have as they approach adulthood. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

My Body, My Self for Boys: A "What's Happening to My Body?".......2007-02-07
This book although informative read too much like a science book. I would recommend a smaller but just as informative book titled "What's going on Down there? Questions boys are afraid to ask". It was more conversational and answered the tough questions with entertaining cartoons and candor. I would recommend the parent read the book first, then have the child read it, and then they discuss it together.

A wonderful idea!.......2000-07-07
This is wonderful! A Little House Book for even the youngest of readers! The complete books of the series may seem a little long for the little ones, this is great to get them familiar with the series. This book is kid sized, and is very well illustrated, the colors are vibrant, Laura would be proud, it is a very cute book! I will be buying more of these books in the future, the Farmer Boy Books are great for getting little boys interested in the Little House Series. A true Winner!
These books are great for new readers.......1999-07-27
I have always been a Little House fan, and I wanted to pass on the enjoyment of Laura and her friends to my 5 year old niece. She loves them so much and asks me when she is going to receive another one. It is our special thing because she will only let me read them to her!!
Book Description
Little Pink Raincoat is a collection of mini–profiles in shopping and romantic courage. A little Coco Chanel, a lot Carrie Bradshaw, with a dash of Maureen Dowd––this hip, hilarious account from Gigi Anders relates her experiences with the dual obsessions of clothing and men.
It's a classic female position for the Sex and the City set. From one very fabulous and elusive little pink raincoat (to woo the commitment phobe) to a pair of very persuasive peach panties (gift from a dazzling doc) Gigi Anders relates her experiences as they deal with the dual obsessions of clothing and men. Ten vignettes chronicling ten choice sartorial items and the ten corresponding boyfriends that would undoubtedly love her stylishly ever after, even if they didn't.
Gigi Anders spied her beautiful little pink raincoat in a Sunday Styles article, and, desperate to obtain one of her own, she proceeded single–mindedly to hunt it down. Six states and approximately seventy–five Gaps later, bliss in the form of a little pink raincoat was hers––a weapon of mass seduction that would surely make her boyfriend swoon permanently.
A tasty, universal, uplifting, pop cultural meditation on the things we crave and the lengths we'll go to get them, Little Pink Raincoat is ten short chapters organized around one freakin' fabulous and hard–to–come–by item –– either clothing or an accessory or a kind of makeup –– paired with the hard–to–pin–down man in question at the time of the given sartorial–cosmetic love obsession, and the quest to nail 'em both. The items and boyfriends are all from Anders' real life, her real (extremely jammed) closet and her bed.
Book Description
The second NFL player ever to come out as gay and the first ever to come out as HIV-positive, Roy Simmons was an up-and-coming star offensive lineman who quit football after just four years rather than be exposed as gay. Out of Bounds tells his compelling story-from his rape at age 10 to being plucked from his poor Southern background to join the NFL, from his first taste of pro football fame and sudden enormous wealth to his fast-paced, no holds barred nightlife of heavy drugs and countless sexual encounters with women and men. Simmons led a roller-coaster life that peaked in the late 1980s with his playing in the Superbowl. Ultimately, however, reckless living left him penniless, friendless, and on the brink of suicide. Finally in 1992, Simmons tapped the courage to come out as gay on national TV—then coming out as HIV-positive 10 years later—leading him to a healthy path of sobriety and self-acceptance.

Lust, Love & Lies.......2007-09-07
We truly take our hats off to Roy Simmons for his honesty in coming out about his addiction, sexual abuse and his life of love, lust and lies in the NFL closet. In this eye-opening Autobiography Out Of Bound, Roy Simmons, known as " The Sugar Bear", talks about his life as a football player, playing for the New York Giants, Washington Redskins and USFL Jacksonville Bulls. Roy Simmons, a man who had it all was at the top of his profession. He was making tons of money and loved by thousands of fans, fell from grace.
Though Roy had a promising career as a NFL football player, like so many others, he allowed himself to be seduced into the world of drug-addiction. He followed in the footsteps of his teammates, refused to deal with his homosexuality, and forced himself to forget an unspeakable event that involved him being raped as a child by a respectable neighbor and was in denial about his sex addictions which was the cause of his down fall. "It's amazing how he did not realize that his rape would trigger a future chain of events in his later years of countless promiscuity".
Torn between his high school sweetheart; Sheila, who later became the mother of his daughter, and Joe, the only man he ever truly loved, he manage to lose them both, by letting his selfishness and his addiction interfered.
After leaving the NFL and trying to make a life for himself, Roy goes from "Sugar to Shit". He continued to indulge heavily into drugs and alcohol and became more and more self-destructive. His life became unmanageable and spirals out of control. As the drugs and the alcohol takes over his life, he became violent, desperate and starts to prostitute himself. Eventually, Roy winds up on welfare.
As you continue to read this book, you will learn more and more about the great Roy Simmons, the Ex NFL football player. In this book, Roy shares his days of free basing, smoking crack, his time in prison and being HIV- Positive Roy even talks about dressing up in drag; yes dressing up in drag.
We found it truly remarkable for a man like Roy to encounter so many chances in life... just when you think he has hit rock-bottom, somehow he bounces back. It's amazing to discover how such a lucky man was not able to learn from his mistakes. Roy was definitely a man who had more than nine lives
So whether you're a Roy Simmons fan, a recovering addict, bi-sexual, or just plan old confused about who you are, Out Of Bounds teaches you a powerful lesson about the truth.... Remember, you can run, but you can't hide from the truth because in the end, the truth will always set you free. So we urge you to go out and get this book and delve into the un-restful soul of Mr. Roy Simmons.
Hang on for this ride.......2007-06-11
If you think you are going to read a bio of an athlete, or a good gay nonfiction read, fasten your seat belt. This rollicking life story of Roy Simmons goes well beyond both of those matters to take you on a journey of sex, fame, money, and living on the wild side.
A young high school football star, Roy Simmons had no idea what lay ahead of him. Soon he was courted by colleges, pro teams, and hot men and women alike. He would be the first to admit he was gullible to all the attention, and he quickly indulged in all of it.
At the heart of this story, though, is the dark childhood secret that drove him (in both negative and positive ways), styling his future until he realized what he was doing to his body and mind. Even if you are not a sports fan, you would enjoy this incredible life story. I was shocked at the levels he'd risen to in the NFL yet for the hunger of drugs would stoop to being a male hustler for his latest fix. His breathless honesty took tremendous courage.
This is a story that is not only gripping to read, but which will take you through several layers of thought as you see this man's incredible path.
Sad tale of Deception.......2006-11-08
Mr. Simmons's story is a cautionary tale of lies and deception. He is delusional about the lack of recovery and involves those who love him in his "quicksand of lies and cruelty." He claims to have loved those who care for him and yet he hurts them and worst, expose them to the risk HIV/AIDS with his reckless behavior.
I had hoped to read further his story redemption and atonement for those he had hurt that he claimed to love. There is no such ending.
Heavy Metal.......2006-08-04
I enjoyed this book from the point of view of a white football fan looking in from the outside on the experiences of a black brotha coping with the challenge of being gay. But I was rather turned off by the many expletives on almost every page in the later chapters, as he described his struggles with alcohol, drugs, and the underground gay culture. I live on a Caribbean Island where I hear the same expletives every day, so I can appreciate the reality of "the life" but it was a bit off-putting for the general reader. Still I came away praying for Ray, that he will be able to stay on the wagon and not relapse from his addictions, and also hoping that he will sometime find a partner that he can rely on and relate to.
my eyes were BUCK my mouth was OPEN!.......2006-07-09
its hard to write a review without giving away juicy details but his lifestyle was of the fu_king hook to say the least! im not a football fan but i love autobio/memoirs so i gave this book a shot and im glad i did! this book was a good read! its shocking sad has hunor and will make u mad! i will stop there and say i reccomend this book to all ages races and al lifestyles there is a LESSON TO BE LEARNED!
