Winner of the 1989 Newbery Award,
Joyful Noise is a children's book of poetry about insects that was designed for two readers to enjoy together. On each page are two columns of verse for children to alternate reading aloud about the lives of six-legged creatures ranging from fireflies writing in the sky to a love affair between two lice, crickets eating pie crumbs and the single day in the life of a mayfly. Charming large scale soft-pencil illustrations enhance the comical, easy-to-read text.
Book Description
Written to be read aloud by two voices––sometimes alternating, sometimes simultaneous––here is a collection of irresistible poems that celebrate the insect world, from the short life of the mayfly to the love song of the book louse. Funny, sad, loud, and quiet, each of these poems resounds with a booming, boisterous, joyful noise.
In this remarkable volume of poetry for two voices, Paul Fleischman verbally re–creates the "Booming/boisterious/joyful noise" of insects. The poems resound with the pulse of the cicada and the drone of the honeybee. Eric Beddows's vibrant drawings send each insect soaring, spinning, or creeping off the page in its own unique way.
A clear and fascinating guide to the insect world––from chrysalid butterflies to whirligig beetles–– and an exultant celebration of life.

Excellent Resource for Poetry Exposure in the Classroom.......2007-08-03
"Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices" can be enjoyed by anyone who has an interest in poetry, but I believe it will be a wonderful classroom resource. Literature involves not only novels, but also poetry." Joyful Noise" can be read by the entire class, allowing everyone to participate. The verses can be challenging (and the vocabulary is suited for older students), but it is fun and entertaining to attempt to read them correctly. "Joyful Noise" can also be used across the curriculum. The poems are about insects (I especially love the poem 'Fireflies'), and they would be ideal for integration into science lessons, with children researching an insect from the book. Students could do art after reading one of these poems, creating pictures to describe what they've read. Writing skills could be built by allowing students to create their own poems for two voices. Vocabulary could be strengthened by, as a class, looking up the more difficult words and clarifiying everyone's understanding. All in all, this is a very special book, whether it's kept for personal enjoyment or is shared with children!
Truly is a "Joyful Noise".......2007-07-05
I'm a sixth grade teacher, and I have Poetry Cafe in my classroom every other weekend during the school year. Joyful Noise is a favorite of the kids in my class every year. It is always the poetry book the kids go for first when they are picking their poems for the week. They love the challenge of reading the poems fluently while still staying "on beat". The poems are beautifully written with rich vocabulary. I highly recommend this book.
Create life-long memories with your children or grandchildren.......2006-09-04
Mesmorizing & magical. These poems are fun to read with kids ... for both kid and adult ... because the interplay of sounds is magical. And for the adults, there is deeper meaning to savor and be mesmorized by for long after the last page is turned. I read these with my kids over a decade ago, Just re-found the book and read them again with them a decade later and they smiled ear to ear at the memory of reading it together so long ago, and loved doing it again, but this time at a deeper level.
Great poetry to read with a friend!.......2006-06-15
I like this book because it's a fun way to learn about insects. You can also read it with a friend. My favorite part about the book was the poem called Water Boatman. It's m favorite because it was very funny. I also liked the one called Honeybees because you got to use two different personalities. The queen bee had a wonderful life and the worker bee has a hard life and hates being a bee. I would recommend this book to my teachers as a learning book about poetry and insects.
Don't Read Alone.......2006-02-24
Don't pick this book of poetry up unless you are with someone else who wants to read it too. This book is meant to be read aloud by two people at the same time, if you try reading it silently it gets very boring. If you are into performance and like to practice reading things aloud, then this book is great. As a future school teacher I have seen a lot of possibilities come from this book. Some struggling reader could be motivated to practice quite a bit by this book if they have a partner to read with (parent, classmate, friend, etc.), but it is not at all entertaining to read in any other way than with "two voices."

The search never ends.......2007-04-06
This anthology of over 300 poems showcases America's diverse spiritual traditions in one handy volume. The book is almost overwhelming in its scope and content. It's all here, from ancient Native songs to Traditional Spirituals and Hymns of the Nineteenth Century; from Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain; from Langston Hughes to Shaker Hymns and just about everything and everyone in-between. This is a must have volume for any reader interested in the centuries old search for the spiritual in poetry.
Joyful Noise meets a need.......2006-12-22
Joyful Noise: An Anthology of American Spiritual Poetry fills a distinct need. The introduction's opening line, "all poetry is spiritual", sets the tone. With minimal initial definition of the "spiritual," the book opens up to a wide range of moments of "extra-ordinary perception" that show the construction, over more than four centuries, of "a national conscience and consciousness." The claim is large but exact. Joyful Noise is a pleasure to read and a help to anyone looking for a deeper personal path. Teachers of American literature, history, religion, psychology or culture can make good use of it, too. An excellent and unusual collection.

A Joyful Must Read.......very, very good........2006-08-01
This is a must read. Each characters within each stories was exciting to read about. How there lives have changed with God in there heart. They were able to reach and achieve a higher walk with Christ. Thank you Jacquelin Thomas and may God bless you contineously with your writing.
Heart Songs.......2006-01-03
This was a very enjoyable book. All of the stories were touching and had a message about love and faith. The book was very well written, only a few typo's. The writing was sincere, the messages were clear, and the stories were heart felt. It's good to pick up a book about the goodness of God. Believer's and non-believer's should read this book.
Speak to my heart..........2005-04-09
There is nothing sweeter, outside of the love of God, than a loving relationship with the one who makes your heart flutter and your pulse race just by looking at them. To love and be loved...oh what a wondrous feeling. In HOW SWEET THE SOUND, authored by highly acclaimed authors Jacquelin Thomas, Francis Ray and Felicia Mason, we are introduced to six individuals who find love when they least expect it, and for one couple, a second chance at love.
As a huge fan of both the romance and Christian fiction genres, this combination of both really touched my heart. Each author's story was heartfelt, heartwarming, and a beautiful testament to true love. They were romantic without being sappy, and even though the novel is faith based, it is not preachy, but the underlying message of waiting on and believing in God for all things is apparent and speaks volumes. HOW SWEET THE SOUND has already been added to my list of all-time favorites.

Then Sings My Soul.......2005-03-18
Jacquelin Thomas, Francis Ray and Felicia Mason join together to bring their readers stories based around the Peaceful Rest Church. Good preaching is essential in any church, but Peaceful Rest Church is known for the soul stirring vocalists and choirs. While singing for the Lord, the characters in these stories also find love.
In Make a Joyful noise by Jacquelin Thomas, Desiree Coleman sings for the Lord, loudly and badly. When famous R&B sensation Bradley Rhodes comes to Peaceful Rest to take over the choir, he is horrified and insists that Desiree be dropped from the choir. Desiree is determined to sing in the choir and challenges Bradley to make her a better singer. What Bradley does not count on is how this songtress makes her way into his heart.
In Then Sings My Soul by Francis Ray, Grace Thompson is the staunch hymns only choir director of Peaceful Rest Church. Caleb Jackson is the hip-hop choir director at Summerset Junior College. When Grace is paired with Caleb Jackson, to join the two choirs to perform at the annual Harvest Celebration at the college, she is beside herself. Grace is convinced that Caleb and his version of gospel music is the work of the devil and will be detrimental to the celebration. Instead, when she and Caleb begin to work together they are able to come to terms with their individual style of music and with each other..
In Heart Songs by Felicia Mason, Carys Shaw and the Rev. TC Holloway become reacquainted at their 25th college class reunion. Both are widowed and battling personal demons. An impromptu performance leads to the choir reuniting to sing again. Rehearsing and reminiscing brings Carys and TC together. Before long, it becomes apparent that the Lord has brought them back together again for a different reason. .
This anthology brings romance into Christian Fiction on a higher level. The couples are well rooted in their faith and live a lifestyle conducive to their convictions. These love stories are tasteful and romantic. This is a book for the Christian Fiction lover and the Romance lover. I am sure they will enjoy as I did.

Very Enjoyable!.......2005-02-23
I'm going to have to give this one 5 stars. I occassionally purchase Harlequin Inspired novels and have enjoyed them, but haven't always felt the spiritual depth that the editors allowed these authors to explore. This was a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed this book and pray the publisher will continue to give African American readers stories we can relate to. Thanks to all the authors for their great stories.
Blessings,
Rhonda

Book Description
Twenty-one American writers approach "The Greatest Story Ever Told" with a fresh eye toward its meaning for today.Seeking to reconcile their experiences growing up in the baby boom and Generation X years with their political beliefs and the fractious ethics of the late twentieth century, the writers represented in this collection have looked back to the source text of Christianity. Their essays, which offer interpretations of the New Testament that eye-opening, passionate, and powerful, will be a source of reassurance and inspiration to anyone who has felt the need to approach spirituality in a personal or unorthodox way.
Customer Reviews:
A fresh and wildly spirited collection of essays........1999-04-29
Edited by one of the literary giants of the 20th century, Rick Moody, Joyful Noise is the most profound treatment of the N.T. I have ever come across. Not since Chesterton's Orthodoxy has my system of beliefs been so tested. This book will appeal to, and the shake the ground of agnostics and believers alike.
Spiritual thinking taken to dramatic heights.......1998-08-24
Being acquainted with the editors, I chose to read the introduction and afterword as book-ends. The effect was electrifying, since these writers clearly are wrestling with their personal beliefs, and struggling to communicate how important this quest can be. Any tolerant and thoughtfull religious thinker will find his/her accepted theology stretched and challenged, though many of the views seem "heretical" to mainstream conventional approaches. Take a chance and see if some of your long-held tenets don't take on a different resonance.
Product Description
1 Cassette: Grasshoppers, waterstriders, and fireflies light up the pages of this rib-tickling book of poetry for two voices. Written as spirited duets, the poems ring with the love songs of book lice, the serenades of moths, and a choir of cicadas. Each one is a treat, filled with busy insect life. In addition to the voices of these frisky critters, there are also fascinating tidbits about their lives and habits. The digger wasp lays eggs underground, musing that it will never see their generation. Joyful Noise is a marvelous concoction of music and imagery, sound and sense, brilliantly narrated by four of Recorded Books, Inc.s most gifted readers. Paul Fleischman, an award-winning author of childrens books, has received critical acclaim for this collection of poems. Joyful Noise is an ALA Notable Childrens Book, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, and a Newbery Medal Winner. It won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Fiction/ Poetry, it was selected for The Horn Book Fanfare Honor List, and was designated a Notable Childrens Trade Book in the Language Arts by the NCTE.

Cute Premise, Okay stories.......2007-10-09
Four little boys make a pact to remain unmarried until they are "really old" - like 30! They use their allowance as membership dues in the "Bachelor's Club". Whoever breaks the pact and marries, forfeits his money. That is the story that binds four romantic novellas. Overall, this was a worthwhile read, but nothing to really shout about.
"The Rescue" by Kathleen Y'Barbo is the story of Adam and Amy. He's a veterinarian working in his hometown. She's his childhood sweetheart who left him at the altar and became a big-name Hollywood actress. Can Adam forget the past and help the lady he still loves?****
Rhonda Gibson's "Stealing Home" is Will and Charisma's tale. Will befriends a lonely young boy through the great American pastime of baseball. Can he also win over the boy's beautiful sister? This is a well-told story that really touched my heart.****
Isaac and Brooke meet on the set of a game show called "Right For Each Other". This story, told by Bev Huston was creative, but ended rather abruptly. I still enjoyed the comedy of errors plotline, though.***
"Joyful Noise" is Janet Spaeth's contribution to the "Bachelor's Club" stories. Joseph and Rosa met eyes across a crowded church and seemed to fall deeply in love on the spot. This story was flavorful, but too far-fetched.***
Fun premise and a fun read.......2006-04-14
I love novella collections, and this one is cute. The premise is interesting and the four authors do a great job incorporating the theme of the book in their stories. A great way to spend a rainy afternoon or a few hours at the beach.
Four entertaining Novellas.......2006-03-21
Four young boys decide to start a club for guys who won't get married, at least until they're thirty years old. They put half of their allowances in a bank account, agreeing anyone who gets married before the deadline forfeits his share. However, as everyone knows, little boys grow up to be big boys and their attitude toward girls can change.
.
THE RESCUE by Kathleen Y'Barbo
Adam Chambers was less than happy when Amy Foreman showed up in his rocker, on his porch. With less than two months to go until he reaches the magic age of thirty and the chance to collect his share of the Bachelor Club Fund, the last person he wants to see right now is the one woman he'd ever been willing to marry.
Amy is on the run. Her Hollywood career has blossomed, she's billed as the next Grace Kelly, but there is a problem. Her business manager, Ed Moore has systematically looted her bank accounts, and threatens to tell everyone she has a drug problem and blew her own money to support it.
Adam doesn't want to get involved with Amy again, but how can he turn away when she needs his help. More to the point, can a small town veterinarian and a famous movie star work out their differences? Will Adam be the first to break away from the Bachelor Club?
STEALING HOME By Rhonda Gibson
While Will Lovelace dated a lot of girls in college, he doesn't remember Charisma Diner. She's never forgotten him though, and the way he dated all of her friends but never looked at her. Will, a charter member of the Bachelor Club, never got serious about any girl. He figured he could play the field until he turned thirty.
Charisma has been responsible for her young brother Joey, since their parents death. Her floral business keeps her busy, and she didn't realize how much she was neglecting Joey until he met Will at the ball diamond. She doesn't want Will in her life, but how can she deny a lonely little boy their friendship?
Will is determined to remain single until he's thirty. It's not that he needs the Bachelor Club money; it's the principle of the thing. With only three of the club members left unmarried, does he really want to drop out? Unfortunately, he can't stop thinking about Charisma, but can he convince a woman who knows him only too well that he has changed?
RIGHT FOR EACH OTHER By Bev Houston
Isaac Brooks was the prankster of the Bachelor Club, but a terrible tragedy changed him forever. Prone to panic attacks, he doesn't do well in stressful situations. When he's mistaken for a contestant for the Right for Each Other Show, he finds himself on the set with a woman named Debbie, whom he's never seen before. Debbie whispers that his name is Anthony, and he's her fiancé. The real fiancé didn't show up and Isaac has been drafted. He tries to tell the truth, but no one will listen. Issac finds himself attracted, not to Debbie, but the Brook Hart, the show moderator.
When Brook learns he was a false contender, she is upset. Isaac apologizes, but she isn't in a forgiving mood. Finally, she relents, but she is here on a work visa. Unless she can get it renewed, she will have to return to London. Isaac doesn't want to lose her, but why would a woman like Brook want a man who breaks out in a sweat when in a crowd. And there's the Bachelor Club. Only one other member is unmarried. Given his emotional problems, why not play it safe, give up the woman he loves and take the money?
JOYFUL NOISE By Janet Spaeth
Joseph Montoya is the lone holdout member of the Bachelor Club. Joseph can't sing a note. Can't even whistle on tune. Why then did he sigh up for voice lessons? Could it be the new voice teacher? Rosa Cruz?
Rose is worried about Joseph's cold, which keeps him from taking the voice lessons he arrives for each week. She occasionally hears an odd sound coming from the men's section of the choir, but that can't be Joseph, can it? She is upset when her best friend tries to set her up with Joseph, but somehow they do seem to fit well together.
As the last member of the Bachelor Club, Joseph is home free. All he has to do is stay single until he is thirty and all of the money is his. Will the monetary lure of the club sound a sour note in his relationship with Rosa?
I really enjoyed this book. A good addition to my bookshelf.
50 / 50.......2005-06-18
First two stories are really good. Last two by Janet Spaeth and Kathleen Y'Barbo were not good. They were boring. Guess two good stories for this price is not a bad deal.
The Bachelor Club.......2005-05-01
Years ago, four little boys decided they would never marry -- but now they've met the woman of their dreams. Will they be willing to give up their stakes in the club?
This is a unique idea and a very quick read. I enjoyed all the stories in it.
