Customer Reviews:
not what I expected.......2007-08-31
It took the author 4 YEARS to rehabilitate her dog using her method, and its easy to understand why. Nowhere in this book are you taught how to nurture trust and respect from your dog. The advice on training specific commands is worth reading, but probably not what most people that buy this book are looking for. The books I bought after reading this one were so much better. I would highly recommend the books by Patricia McConnell instead. Her 'How to be a Pack Leader' booklet is awesome and sets the stage for success with her other books, Feisty Fido and the Cautious Canine.
The Guide to Dog Survival.......2007-03-30
This is a no nonsense concise guide for training and rehabilitating an agressive dog and also their owner. Pam Dennison gives precise step by step positive training techniques that will create a lasting bond between human and dog. It is a must read for the agressive dog owner, but is also common sense training for any dog owner. Her use of positive reinforcement of good behavior rather than punishment for bad will make many dogs' lives happier. Her suggestion to keep a daily log of training is a great tool and she supplies a template. I've already seen great results using her techniques with both my dogs. This is a must read for all dog lovers, easy to read, and full of valuable information and insight.
For People with dog/dog and dog/people aggressive dogs.......2007-02-19
A useful book with straight forward explanations about "aggressive" emotions in dogs. A humane approach to management of these dogs and also helpful ideas to prevent people from making the situation worse and aggravating the anxious animal. A good book for new pet owners who find
dog handling to be more hazardous than anticipated.
Some other books that might help, too.......2006-08-17
I liked this book and feel it will help. Some other resources for some specific types of aggression not mentioned in the other reviews are "Fight!" by Jean Donaldson, for dogs that aggress toward other dogs, "Mine!" by Jean Donaldson, for dogs that guard their food bowl or other items of value (to the dog), and "Feisty Fido! Help for the Leash Aggressive Dog" by Patricia B. McConnell and Karen B. London. The techniques in these practical, reasonably-priced pamphlets would mesh well with the other resources mentioned.
Also try Sunshine Books (Karen Pryor).......2006-08-12
Although its been suggested in a review here, Aggression in Dogs: Practical Management, Prevention & Behaviour Modification (Paperback) by Brenda Aloff is rather expensive. I like Karen Pryor's books because they emphasize positive, reward driven training and behavior modification.
Book Description
In this 1996 Minnesota Book Award winner, Kent Nerburn draws the reader deep into the world of an Indian elder known only as Dan. It’s a world of Indian towns, white roadside cafes, and abandoned roads that swirl with the memories of the Ghost Dance and Sitting Bull. Readers meet vivid characters like Jumbo, a 400-pound mechanic, and Annie, an 80-year-old Lakota woman living in a log cabin. Threading through the book is the story of two men struggling to find a common voice. Neither Wolf nor Dog takes readers to the heart of the Native American experience. As the story unfolds, Dan speaks eloquently on the difference between land and property, the power of silence, and the selling of sacred ceremonies. This edition features a new introduction by the author. “This is a sobering, humbling, cleansing, loving book, one that every American should read.” — Yoga Journal

Neither Wolf Nor Dog.......2007-09-15
I can't really add anything more that hasn't already been said here. I just wanted to note that I too think this is a truly beautiful and very important book. I will carry it's message with me always.
Keepers of the Fire.......2007-08-11
There are many books by do-gooders claiming to advance the wisdom and worldliness of Native American elders, but such books tend to glamorize the mythical past and/or simplify belief systems through the eyes of an amazed know-it-all white person. Another side-effect of the American media's obsession with Native American history is that it ignores the people's modern travails while focusing on how noble and pure everything was before the white man arrived. In this generally outstanding book, Kent Nerburn tries to avoid these weaknesses of white-generated coverage of Indians, and is mostly (though not always) successful.
This book is based on Nerburn's very rocky and uncomfortable friendship with an old Lakota man named Dan, who has led a long life of hardship on the reservation while striving to preserve his tribe's culture and customs. Refreshingly, Dan and Nerburn quickly dispense with historical myths and focus on where Indians stand in the present, with modern social problems combined with a need to understand a history far more painful and destructive than even the most sympathetic White Americans could imagine. Nerburn cannot always avoid sappy cultural ruminations and Dan is not always a likable person - but this all works to the book's advantage because both are revealed as complex humans with realistic strengths and weaknesses. The text occasionally gets uncomfortable as Dan delivers hard-hitting soliloquies on the continuing differences in the worldviews of the two peoples, but his opinions on matters of history and culture can be highly illuminating, as are Nerburn's struggles to understand without becoming the type of exploitative writer that he loathes. In the end, this is an extremely thought-provoking book and is essential for anyone interested in the culture of Native Americans - yesterday and today. [~doomsdayer520~]
Amazing Book!.......2007-05-15
I am in the process of reading this book for the third time, and it still catches and holds me like very few other books can. If you are a reader interested in obtaining a dramatic and unadulterated view of America through the eyes of those who lived here prior to the European invasion, this book will give that to you. If you want a viewpoint beyond the white-written history books, in which battles won by Indians are "massacres" and battles won by whites are "victories," this is the book for you. After all, this was a country in which people and societies existed before Christopher Columbus showed up. I will warn you to be prepared; you will never view "American" history in the same manner again!
A must read for America's Moral Compass.......2007-01-04
A fantastic, insight into a reality we share with native americans - Our country and lands, democracy, religion expanded just behind our destruction and sanctioned genocide of the American Indian. A gripping reminder that 150 years, in the collective memory of a people,is but a blink of an eye and that this struggle that most White Americans relegate to old hisotry is still well alive for Native Americans. This history, our own history, if held to contemporary american moral compass would be the cause of great outrage. As I read I found my patriotism humbled by they hyprocracy of our own history. And yet, the message of the book also faces the reality of the past and looks to a better future both for Native and White Americans. Simply a great read and great insight.
Awesome Read.......2006-11-21
This book was very deep and realistic. Few books have I read twice - this was one of them. I applaud the author - Nerburn. Reading this book was a gift. Thank you for taking on this project.

I did not like the book Adam of the road because it tells you a whole bunch of stuff about the characters before it gets to the story and by the time you get to the story you forget about the characters. I also did not like the fact that the book talks weird and it says like thou father I shall bla bla bla.
Lost and Found on the Road of Life.......2006-04-30
Set during the reign of King Edward "Longshanks" this story describes the life of a minstrel's son. Adam adores his pet spaniel, Nick, and pals around with a boy named Perkin, who is a fellow student at the Abbey School. But the youth yearns for his father's return, so that they may travel the glorious Road together: singing, harping, reciting tales (called Lays), spreading news and performing acrobatics-anything to entertain a crowd and therefore earn food and lodging.
Overjoyed when Roger returns to claim him astride a huge warhorse, Adam sets out wearing his new French minstrel togs. During the course of the next six months, however, the boy will come of age as he struggles to survive on his own-using his skills and his wits. First Roger looses the horse in a game of dice; then Nick is stolen by an unscrupulous minstrel named Jankin. Finally the boy becomes separated from his father and is obliged to travel the lonely Road utterly alone.
Despite the well-meaning intentions and sincere advice of various adults who help him during this difficult time, Adam clings to one dream only: to find Roger and return to the life he truly loves-that of a minstrel. No clerk's robes or scholar's quill can lure him; no plow or ferry does he care to
handle for life. His fingers long to pluck the strings of his little harp. Can a mere boy wander the highways of Southern England seeking his father and lost dog; can he survive cold, hunger, false accusation, devious plots for his future, and criminal intent successfully? This 1942 Newbery award winner mentions so many terms and customs of the Middle Ages that it could serve as an introduction to Medieval Studies. Historical references include Runnymede and the king's first convocation of the People's Parliament. An entertaining, light read enhanced by interesting black and white illustrations.
Book Description
Got the "blahs" - is it snowing - is it cold - are you stuck on the couch and bored to tears? Travel Tales ... An Old Retiree, His RV, His Dog, and His Woman (not necessarily in order of preference) Hit The Road by Ken Halloran could provide the antidote for these all-to-common ailments. It focuses, in a humorous way, on everyday events that happen to everyday people while touring and traveling in a Recreational Vehicle (RV). If you are an RV enthusiast, perhaps retired and a current "snowbird", you will readily relate to the adventures in the book. If you're sitting at home wondering what you're going to do when retirement comes knocking, you will receive a bit of insight into an RV "snowbird's" lifestyle. Travel Tales... wants to make you smile and wants to get you up and get you going!

LOL fun!.......2007-06-11
A wonderful book! I was not in the trailer with this couple...but I felt like I was. Frequently, on the trip (my trip with them when I was reading) I had to stop and laugh...a big belly laugh. The way Hollarn wrote the book was so greatly enjoyable. Thanks for a wonderful read and a fun, fun adventure.

Enjoy The Ride.......2007-01-09
Even readers who have never traveled by RV will find this book engrossing, highly entertaining , informative and hilarious. It is a wonderful mix of humor and great facts about places to visit in the U.S. I felt like I was there traveling with the author and his wife--and loving every minute of it. This is one of those books where you can hardly wait to see what happens next.

Book Description
After spending fifteen years visiting and writing about thousands of bed and breakfasts, inns, hotels, and resorts for their critically acclaimed regional series On the Road Again with Mans Best Friend Dawn and Robert Habgood have used their expertise to write their first national, pet-oriented travel guide. The only national pet travel guide to combine so many choices with such detailed information.
In the U.S. edition of On the Road Again with Mans Best Friend, the Habgoods balance quality with quantity. With over 16,000 accommodations from mom-and-pop motels and B&Bs to expansive resorts and luxurious hotels you will always find an array of intriguing places to stay with your favorite canine or feline.
These are not bare bone lists. In fact, Each entry includes the name, address, telephone number, and web site address (when available), along with number of rooms and corresponding rates. "Pet Policies" give pet fees, pet size and weight limitations, as well as any pet amenities that are provided. "Creature Comforts" outline the establishments amenities and include an array of features ranging from VCRs, Jacuzzis, and wet bars to on-site restaurants, health clubs, and pools.
Their special logo indicates the finest and most unique whether it be a gracious Southern mansion, a Western dude ranch, a five-star resort, or an intimate seaside bed and breakfast. The Habgoods were very selective, highlighting only those that they personally visited or that received multiple reader recommendations. Those specially designated accommodations also receive a short, detailed review. Information is that of an insider, with inclusion based on merit. Please note that none of the accommodations has paid a fee for inclusion in this book.
Before picking up the telephone to reserve a room, read through the introduction. Here, the Habgoods discuss traveling with your pet, safety information, things you should bring for your pet, and what to do if she gets lost. The section, "Not All Rooms are Created Equal," provides the inside scoop on how to reserve the best rooms and questions to ask to make sure that you dont get shuffled into undesirable rooms because you are traveling with a pet. "Money Matters" give advice on how to find discounted room rates, as well as some of the hidden aspects of pet fees and deposits.
This is an amazing resource, comprising nearly 900 pages, and one that you will want to include in all your adventures. Whether youre traveling across the country, along the coasts, or to all 50 states, this tome will ensure an enjoyable trip down the road with your best friend or favorite feline.

Stick with the AAA guides.......2002-02-23
On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend suffers from a single, major fault: it does not rate the accommodations it lists. The AAA guides, on the other hand, contain basically the same information as On the Road AND include hotel/motel ratings. This is critical, because I don't want to end up at Bates Motel even if they DO permit pets. 8-}
On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend.......2000-12-29
This book was a complete waste of money! Last summer our family drove from Rhode Island to Washington State with our cat and two Golden Retrievers. NOT A SINGLE ESTABLISHMENT I CONTACTED FROM THIS BOOK TOOK PETS! Some of the motels I called told me that they have NEVER taken animals. Save your money and use AAA's Traveling With Your Pet. It's cheaper, and one heck of a lot more reliable.
How to travel with pets and not go insane!.......2000-08-19
My husband is in the Navy and we move every 18 months; On the Road with Man's Best Friend is an absolute essential. We have gone cross country twice not to mention many, many car trips in-between and have found the book to be extremely reliable. A great tool for plans that can change, it has all the essential info - How many pets, If a deposit is required, address info and phone number. All you need is a cell (or pay) phone and a couple of pooches! I would never take a trip without this book with me even if we are traveling without the dogs. A great resource!
Superlative resource.......2000-06-23
In planning a cross-country trip with my dog (and wife too) for Summer 2000, this proved an invaluable resource. It lists thousands of pet-friendly places to stay in virtually every city and major town in all 50 states. Although the entries for each inn are very basic, they hit the high points: address, phone, web site, pet policy, and basic amenities. Places they have visited or for which they have received multiple reader recommendations are starred. I also like the fact that they cover a wide range of establishments, ranging from cottages to motels to bed-and-breakfasts to top-of-the-line hotels. Its not really a travel guide you'll need, because the information is too abbreviated, but it is a very valuable reference tool. Highly recommended.
Essential for traveling with pets........2000-06-13
If you recently adopted a pet, this book is essential if you plan to travel with your pet. All of the hotel, airline, trains, campground regulations are discussed. The documentation and supplies needed are indicated. As well as, a discussion, on a personal level, of the possible hazards and pitfalls associated with pet travel.

On The Road with Down Girl and Sit.......2007-06-26
Any dog lover can identify with this book. It is written from the dog's point of view. She thinks her name is Down Girl, and her best friend is Sit. They really don't like Here Kitty, Kitty, who lives behind them. I found it to be hilarious, and I've read it over and over, just for the laughs.
Another great "Down Girl & Sit" book.......2007-03-31
This is the 2nd book Lucy Nolan has written from the viewpoint of a dog "Down Girl". It is just as funny & clever as the first. A very enjoyable read-aloud for all ages. You will laugh.

Extraordinary Writing And Storytelling.......2005-09-28
This is a superbly written book about the outdoors and people. It chronicles the authors five-month long bird hunting odyssey across the U.S.. I cannot recommend it more highly.
Superb writing!.......2005-05-15
I've never hunted in my life but I was swept into this adventure with Fergus and his dog, Sweetzer. It was an exciting and thought-provoking read and I learned much about bird hunting (methods and ethics), the land, and our fragile environment. Fergus' writing style is humorous and intuitive. It's a must read for all who care about our environment.
Bo-ring.......2005-01-20
I liked the premise and based on the reviews bought A Hunters Road. Good outdoor writing effectively takes the reader afield in their minds eye, be it the forest of Maine, the flats off the Florida Keys or the African Savannah. Good outdoor writing also speaks to the place that hunting and fishing holds in our life; how it is a part of us emotionally and spiritually. Consequently, good outdoor writing is a tough job, one that A Hunters Road is not up to. For all it's promise this book is a relatively dry travel journal peppered with sappy hunting cliches.
A Classic.......2000-06-15
For anyone who has a genuine respect and love for upland bird hunting - the sport, the dogs, the game and their habitat - Jim Fergus's A Hunters Road is one of the definitive Classics. The book is not only a wonderfully entertaining read, it is also a serious commentary on those who pursue the sport, the good, the bad, the ugly, the ethics, and the environment. Of course, there will be reader's who either misread or misinterpret Fergus's intent. For those however, who wish to journey into the sanctity of the sport (bird lovers included), and be subliminally educated in the process, Fergus's A Hunter's Road is a must.
A Lost Hunter trying to Find his Way.......2000-03-19
I saw this book at the library and decided to check it out as I'm an avid outdoorsman. Unfortunately it [the book] deals more with the author trying to get his head straight from a bad childhood, than a good book about upland bird hunting. I personally can have little respect for the author after he and his hunting partners borrowed a shotgun from a rancher who tried to drown four yellow lab puppies. The author describes in detail how one of the pups, through its instincts, tried to swim to shore when the rancher threw them in the river. Any self-respecting upland hunter who loves dogs would not have borrowed the "time-of-day" from this rancher--let alone a shotgun. My Instincts tell me never to pick-up this book up again! If you want to read an an enjoyable book about upland bird hunting in America DO NOT READ this book--try another author like Gene Hill. Sincerely: Michael S. Graves
Book Description
YIKES! The original manuscript was reviewed by an Atlanta PhD. and sexologist who commented: "Some of this is very good, especially the Ode. But it's half-baked. Also you don't need to go to a priest for help. Yes, I do think you may be Bi-sexual." * * * Others have said: "Whew, just awful, a stream of consciousness that is very upsetting. I wouldn't buy it any price!" - A Catholic Priest and Author. "Somebody had to do it." A girl at Kinko's. "I was just getting it on and then it turned me off." A former truck driver. * * * The book is in two themes: the first is an embellished narrative with graphic intermission. The second is a play with the Freudian characters of the Ego, Superego and Id narrating a truer, less embellished version that is somewhat preachy and moralistic. The intent of the book remains a mystery. Although as an aging, still sexually confused person, I hope it may speak a message of hope. Finally, the genre is one that a male or female can really relate to having experienced similar drives, desires and imaginings that have not been expressed so graphically or truly. "Yeah, I tried that, and thought about it. I would never tell anybody because I would turn purple and die of shame."

Where's the Maps?.......2004-05-19
The main reason I purchased the book was because I wanted the Hotel locations show on road maps. There isn't a single map in the entire book. For some reason I assumed this aide would be included in the printed version. In larger cites this would be a great help as I try to avoid going out of my way when traveling to find a place to stay. Its basically an outdated printed version of the Web site. Great to have along if your travel plans change and you have no internet connection but of limited use if you do.
A Great Start.......2004-02-17
We used this book (along with Petswelcome and the Internet) to help find accommodations for ourselves and our rambunctious German Shepherd puppy during a move across country. It was extremely helpful in finding possible places to stay in cities that we were not familiar with. Of course, we called all of the places to confirm that they took pets, the rules and the extra fees, before making a decision on any one place. Each place we ended up at was pretty well described in the book and our dog loved his first road trip!
Great Guide with Free On-Line Updates.......2004-01-25
We use the book often, and successfully because we take the authors' advice which is to call ahead and confirm that the property still takes pets. We also go to their website (www.petsonthego.com) to check for updates as well. This is the only pet travel guide, that we know of, to offer both a print version and online version for updates. It really makes it easy for us.
I work in the hospitality industry and know that hotels change policies on a whim -- I think Pets on the Go does a great job of responding to those changes by offering both an easy to use print guide with updated online information! Thanks.
Dated Information.......2003-11-19
I took this and another pet travel book on a cross country trip to my folks house with my dog. I found this to be the least useful, as many of the entries were wrong (it was a HoJo, not a Ramada as listed) and the information was wrong (there was a $10/night charge and the book didn't mention it). All in all I wasn't too impressed.
Pets on the Go -- Book and Website are a Perfect Combination.......2003-09-21
This book covers it all for us -- tells us about pet friendly places to stay, gives us the website addresses to check them out in advance and provides us with the details about pet policies and amenities. We use a combo of the book and the Pets on the Go website (www.petsonthego.com), as the book is easy to look through and carry with us, while the site has book updates and is packed with other information about pet travel trends, cool new hotels, and recreational activities.
Good find!

WHAT AN EGO.......2007-04-15
I am a huge TDN fan from the time they started in the 60's until they disbanded in the 70's. I own every album they made and now I own the same albums on cd. I even was fortunate enough to see them when they reunited in the 80's. I was very unfortunate to see them a few years back, no where as good without the originals.
This book is about Jimmy Greenspoon's life. Starting out as a kid living in Beverly Hills, through his own ventures in small bands, to playing keybords for Three Dog Night, to playing keyboards for Shaun Cassidy, and Back to TDN. And his life as a junkie.
I have never read a book by some one so stuck on their self like Jimmy Greenspoon. Yes TDN was a huge success, yes Jimmy Greenspoon can play keyboards great, but to think he can even attempt to sing Chuck Negron's parts, he must of been stoned. Oh that is right, that was when he was clean, those drugs must of burned out his brains.
I guess it was a blow to his ego to play keyboards for Shaun Cassidy. Did he really think any sane TDN fan would look past the 3 front men, Chuck Negron, Corey Wells, or Danny Hutton, and even give him a second glance.
Funniest thing about this book was when he lost the trust of his junkie buddy, Chuck Negron.
The saddest part of this book was when he stole money from his dying mother, who gave him every thing, there is no excuse for that.
It was a good book if you got past his ego, but not near as good as his junkie buddy's book.
The Ultimate book about Three Dog Night!.......1998-09-12
One Is The Loneliest Number On the Road and Behind The Scenes With The Legendary Rock Band THREE DOG NIGHT by Jimmy Greenspoon with Mark Bego
"Jimmy Greenspoon, keyboardist of Three Dog Night, was a 20-year drug and alcohol addict who barely survived to tell his story...tales of all-night drug and sex orgies, musical jams, stadium-filled tours, and legendary recording sessions are recommended for those interested in this popular band from the late 1960's and early 70's." --Gary M. Krebs / "The Rock and Roll Reader's Guide"
"Jimmy Greenspoon, the keyboard player for Three Dog Night, one of the top rock groups of the 1970's, has written his and the group's story...the group's fame left Greenspoon broke and a heroin junkie. He is now a recovering addict...his book takes a tough look at life on the fast, fast track! --"The Arizona Daily Star"
