Customer Reviews:
An excellent "Gift Book" that is indeed inspirational and heartwarming .......2006-12-12
This is the perfect collection for teenage, horse-crazy girls, and reminds me of the Horse Stories I gobbled up as a kid.
It's a collection of true stories, apparently from people all over the country, each told to a writer and then edited together into this collection. Some are better than others, but they all remind us of how noble, perceptive and kind horses can be when they become partners with their owners instead of beasts of burden.
Horse Miracles.......2006-02-08
This book is plagued with plagerism of already published stories. Most of the details regarding the stories about Ruffian and Secretariat are inaccurate, and they called Riva Ridge, "River Ridge". Very, very, very poorly researched and written. I do not advise anyone to buy this book. I was very disgusted with it. Also, they mention several times that horses are often sold for dog food, and apparently they did NO research on this little fact, HORSES HAVEN"T been used in dog food for nearly 30 years!!!! Perhaps they were trying to cover up for the slaughter industry which buys and slaughters horses for human consumption overseas. I couldn't even finish the book, I didn't trust any of the content as truthful.
Charming! Inspirational ! 'neigh' other way to describe it.......2004-06-14
As a rider and having owned a horse I was so pleased to discover "HORSE MIRACLES". Brad Steiger and Sherry Hansen Steiger's newest delightful collection of true horse tales is an absolute lovely tribute to a long overlooked subject. It easily demonstrates the most noble and important role that horses can miraculously play in the lives of humans. I'm sure that every horse owner can identify with the Steiger's newest book. And if you have never owned a horse it gives a wonderful insight into the oft times ignored talents and sensitivity of these noble creatures. I've enjoyed all of the Steiger storys about other animal miracles but "HORSE MIRACLES" is just especially outstanding! I just could not put it down. And, as usual it is told through the Steigers own special and creative way of writing that lets you, as the reader 'see' and 'feel' the action in each story as it happens.
Does it get any better than Brad Steiger and Sherry Hanson Steiger's "Horse Miracles"? ...'neigh'...Charming and wonderful
is the only way I know to describe their newest book!!!...I will read it over and over as it is highly inspirational! I plan to be sure to use "HORSE MIRACLES" as a top gift consideration to friends and absolutely recommend it as an outstanding book for any member of the family individually or to read aloud from on family night.

Best Horse Stories
ASIN: 1592280110 |
Book Description
Throughout recorded history, the horse has played many roles in human life. He has been man's partner in war, his servant in work, his teammate in sports, his inspiration in art. So it is only natural that literature includes many masterpieces about horses and horsemanship.
The Greatest Horse Stories Ever Told gathers together the best of the equestrian genre. It includes stories and articles by Pulitzer Prize-winners Red Smith, Maxine Kumin, and Jane Smiley, and tales by jockey-turned-mystery novelist Dick Francis and veterinarian-turned-writer James Herriot. Here also are reflections on fox hunting by Steven Budiansky and Anthony Trollope; a profile of Buck Brannaman, the inspiration for The Horse Whisperer; an inspirational piece from Ellie Phayer, and a story about the Spanish Riding School's dancing white horses by Felix Salten (author of Bambi), as well as writing from Tom McGuane, Bill Barich, humorist Cooky McClung, and classic western authors Will James and Zane Grey.
Heartwarming, adventurous, profound, and funny, this anthology is a treasure trove that includes favorite writers and little-known or long-forgotten gems, illuminating our fascination-and captivation-with horses.
Customer Reviews:
Not Happy Enough for Young People.......2007-08-21
My twelve year old thought the book too full of negative stories and dying horses. While a more experienced horseperson may appreciate the realism, this is not the book for a little girl who always loves to draw her horse and puts glitter in his mane even before barrel races.
A total bore........2005-12-29
Don't buy this book unless you wish to be bored with prattle. There is no "story"- - only 3-4 pages of a diary-like perspective of one person talking to another person...in numerous chapters. They are not even tales. There is no theme either. More like boring gossip among elite and wealthy. It's a real sleeper. Not sure how it got published, except there is always someone who might like such idle talk. Title is most misleading.
Some of the Greatest.......2002-02-10
The GREATEST horse stories EVER told? Well...let's put it this way. These are definitely some of the better stories, and certainly the book as a whole offers an eclectic and therefore engrossing range of stories. But don't hold the book's title against it. It really is a nice mix that ranges from the first-person accounts by Jane Smiley of her dear old friend Mr. T. and Colonel Alois Podhaksky's description of his time spent as the Director of the Vienna Spanish Riding School (home of the Lipizzaner stallions) to a story of a real life horse whisperer and Maxine's Kumin's thoughtful answer to the question, "Why is it that girls love horses?" Here too you will find racehorses, cow ponies, hunters and the people who know and care for them. This book is a sure beat for anyone who loves horses, or is interested in what makes those who love them tick.
I laughed at first.......2001-11-28
My non-horsey boyfriend bought this book for me for my birthday. The book name is kind of generic, but I figured he at least got an E for effort. However, once I got started I have been savoring each story. This is definitely a book for horse lovers....real horse lovers. A story taken from "My Horses My Teachers" by Podiesky (sp?) is outstanding. The story about Buck Brannamen - "The Horse Whisperer" was another I'll never forget. Ignore the stupid name and buy this book. Make a cup of hot cocoa on a cold winter night and just get lost in the stories.

Book Description
Raised on the starkly beautiful land of the North American plains, young Starlight spends her days beating dust out of blankets, caring for her family's ponies, and helping her mother pound grain for the tribe's meals. But during the evening, Starlight often gathers with her people to hear wonderful stories told by Laughing Bird - true tales about a loving God, including Starlight's favorite: the story of the white pony.
Skillfully weaving together the threads of time-honored storytelling with solid biblical truth, author Sandra Byrd and illustrator Sarah Waldron have created an unforgettable allegory about God's immense love - dramatically depicted by one loving brave's ultimate sacrifice.

The White Pony.......2000-05-17
This is a beautiful book of great love. In the context of a children's book, a great Indian warrior chooses for his bride a "plain" woman of good character...not considered beautiful nor bright by the other women of the tribe. The other women make fun of her behind her back. The warrior overhears this and offers the largest bride-price in the tribe's history which includes his beloved white pony. The story has a wonderful ending which speaks of Christ's love for us. I highly recommend it for young girls/women. Thank you.

Cross curricular integration.......2007-06-26
This story is a wonderful way to move into working with clay. Just as the boy in the story creates his own horse from clay, allowing children to work with clay immediately after hearing this story gives them a chance to experience kinesthetically what they've heard. Rather than going immediately to reflective or responsive writing, use this step to allow the children to spend more time working it through. Then write.
Praising THE MUD PONY.......2000-06-11
This book has made a lasting impression on my first graders. They loved the story and delighted in the pastel illustrations, especially of the pony in flight. THE MUD PONY fits perfectly in the study of folklore. It appeals not only to the young mind, but to the more mature person as well. The fantasy is delightful and easily grasped by primary children. It makes a fantastic "Read Aloud" book. Read Aloud is a mandatory part of our San Diego Literacy program. We are encouraged to choose only books that "speak" to the children, that instill in them a desire to read more. Moreover, Native American folklore is a precious genre that should be be incorporated into each grade's literary curriculum. Happily, THE MUD PONY can be included in the Multi-cultural category. My students compared and contrasted it with two other books, THE GIFT and EAGLE FEATHERS, both by Owl Goingback. They used the graphic organizer of a triple-circled Venn Diagram which allows for a marvelous overview of the three books, depicting: characters, settings, themes, authors, and illustrators. The children chose a special picture to depict their favorite selections and drew their own rendition onto the diagram. They also searched for "special words" in each book and added them to the large sheet of manila paper covering the front classroom door. All who pass by can read the titles and the information beneath each. As a long-time veteran of the teaching of reading to students of all ages, I am happy to promote THE MUD PONY. Thank you, Caron Lee Cohen, for a book that appeals to the inner child in all of us.

No story in words.. just in pictures. Great way to make up your own story. What is happening? Is the pony real? Cool book to "read" with your kids. Very magicial.

My 5 year old loves it.......2007-01-12
We just got this book from the library and my daughter loves it. I'm going to have to buy it now. She loves being able to tell the story as she sees it, using her imagination. And she also loves reading the book by herself as well as with an adult. A Great idea.
Good, for the right reader.......2006-09-16
The right reader has a read-to-me kid and shares a vivid imagination with that child. The 80+ illustrations tell a wordless story of a small boy and his magical winged horse. Because it's wordless, the readers have to come up with a lot of the story for themselves - the characters' names, details of why and how, and much more. The pictorial narrative gives plenty of chance for embellishment: exciting rescues of flooded families and lost sheep, some friendly moments with innocent romantic potential, and a potentially frightening scene near the end, a nightmare from the cold war era. Because the story exists only with the reader's help, you control how much you will explore each of the book's themes. Although the images are a black&white and a little dated, they will give you and an imaginative child a lot to work with.
I regret that I came to this book with incorrect expectations. I had just read Lynd's "God's Man," and came away very impressed. It's another wordless story, but a grown-up story (as opposed to 'adult'), and done in woodcut. I hoped for more of that complexity and more of Lynd's work in that medium. This book offers neither. The problem is only in what I hoped for the book, not in the book itself. Still, I came away disappointed.

The Silver Pony.......2005-08-20
The book was received in good condition and in a timely manner. I would recommend this site to others.
The child in this book is often seen as a girl by girls........1999-08-11
A very complex story with no printed words. A five year old can tell a fine story from the picturs and a few questions such as "What will happen next?" and 'Why is the father mad?" I called the child "he" once and was quickly corrected by my daughter who had the same short hair and boy like clothes. It is wonderful to have a story where a girl is bold, has wouderful adventures and is loved by her family. We love the book, even 20 years later.
