Book Description

Muhammad Ali is one of the most remarkable personalities of our time and the greatest sportsman to ever walk the earth. To honor this living legend, TASCHEN has created a work that is both epic in scale and just as unique and vibrant as the man himself. It is more than appropriate that a worthy tribute to his life would reflect the scale of his achievements, and "GOAT - Greatest of All Time" proves itself up to the task.

Four years in the making, and the most comprehensive look at Ali to date, "GOAT" tips the scales at 34 kgs (75 lbs) and is 50 cm x 50 cm (20" x 20") in size. 800 pages of archival and original photographs, graphic artwork and articles and essays - many of them previously unpublished - chronicle six decades of his life in stunning detail. To cap it all, the project takes place with the participation of Ali himself and those members of his inner circle who have been closest to him over the years: from managers and key ringside cornermen to friends, family and children; from spiritual and other advisers to broadcasters, essayists and journalists.

No stone has been left unturned in telling this remarkable story: the book features written contributions from hundreds of writers and photographers, as well as over 3,000 photographs of Ali's dazzling life. Plus Ali's own insights, writings and drawings, and reproductions of fight posters and classic memorabilia.

In addition, new work - commissioned from artist Jeff Koons - gives the Ali mythology a twenty-first-century edge and an entirely contemporary context. "GOAT" will come in two versions: the (Champ's Edition), limited to the first 1,000 copies and featuring a specially-commissioned congenial multiple by Jeff Koons as well as four silver gelatin prints by Howard L. Bingham, signed by the photographer and Ali himself. The remaining 9,000 copies come with a photo-litho made by Jeff Koons. All 10,000 copies are individually signed by Muhammad Ali and Jeff Koons.

If you love Ali get his own SOul of A Buterfly or the other bio - if you can find it, as it really gest into the soul of this great man, and into his depp and abiding faith, which is a place no one any longer goes.

Of course if any of the three thousand or twelve thousand DO get to Ali and his family it will make up in a SMALL way for all the millions managers and damagers stole form him, and will get distributed to good working charitable and humanitarian organizations that actually help people, as Ali gives it all away to those in need, unless Bush has declared him officially a funder of bad and dubious causes

so if it goes to Ali, live large y'all

4 out of 5 stars G.R.O.A.T. (Greatest Review of All Time).......2006-02-03

First things first: This book has got talent. It might have once weighed in at a measily 40 pounds (500 pages), but has built up its strength and is now a strong contender. Few could question the book's power when it overcame several best sellers, rising up the non-fiction ranks like a soaring upper cut to truly punish George Foreman's jaw. The only question remaining for the experts is this: Will this book have what it takes to take on in a heavy weight bout its subject ?

5 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing book.......2005-01-24

I had a chance to check out this book at the Tattered Cover of Denver

It is MASSIVE and HUGE

The photographs inside are amazing! It definitely attracts the non-reader, and visual lover, within all of us

The price is VERY steep - only purchase if you're a REALLY big fan

Otherwise, I at least suggest that you find a copy, just to see what a really huge book, about a pretty big dude, is like ----- the book is a feat, in itself - just like Muhammad Ali

1 out of 5 stars Ali as object of conspicuous consumption.......2004-07-21

I revere Ali. I had the honor of meeting him for an author appearance for a previous photo essay book when I worked for a New York-based publisher. The Champion Edition at $10,000 and the cheaper edition at $3000 are antithetical to who the man is, or has been. He has always been a man of the people, and not a sycophant for the wealthy who buy books like they buy shares of Berkshire Hathaway. If there was any information about proceeds from the sale of the books benefitting someone other than the publishers and authors I would feel differently. As it is, this is just an opportunity for those who'd have sent him to jail for avoiding the draft to own him. I'd wager that they care less about what the man stands for than that they can now own something their friends can't afford. If you love Ali and have $3000 or $10,000 to spend, give to a charity in his name.

5 out of 5 stars Ten Stars!.......2004-05-09

"Goat: A Tribute to Muhammad Ali" is seventy-five pounds of the finest photos, essays and articles on the man himself. The packaging is great, with a box to protect the cover from shelf wear.

Nearly every photograph in this huge book is a work of art, many of which have never before been seen. The composition and details of the photographs are amazing. I found myself staring at them for hours.

The hefty price will scare off many, but it really is worth it. Don't forget that it comes autographed by Ali and Jeff Koons. (Meaning it will only go up in value.)

Overall, this beautiful book really is the ultimate tribute. It rates at least ten stars!

With just purchasing our acreage and trying to determine what animals to raise, this book helped tremendously. Alot of info on care and raising these animals.

4 out of 5 stars great book!.......2007-08-10

This book works great and spells everything out very easily. Not the most comprehensive I am sure but I actually learned alot from it. I was mostly interested in chicken and sheep as well as ducks and geese. great book for a beginner like myself.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, on various farm animals.......2007-08-08

This book is a wealth of knowledge! I own lots of books on raising ducks and chickens, and I have to say this book matches up well with all of my other books. Why is this impressive? Because the other books I'm comparing this book to are books that deal with only one type of animal (ducks, geese, chickens, exc). This book gives almost the same amount of detail as my other books plus it covers: Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Sheep, and Cattle. If your going to raise three or more different forms of live stock as a hobby, this is the only book you will need. If your going to try your hand at commercial production than you will need other books to supplement this book. I gave this 4 stars because the chicken and duck sections were not quite a thorough as some of my other books I own (though it came amazingly close). This is a no brainer purchase for anyone raising three or more of the animals listed above. A must buy...

2 out of 5 stars not somali.......2007-06-01

This book was not written by a Somali. "Goat meats, fish frogs, man-eating alligators" ... "All things not Somali."

Other than that, I guess it's not bad if you are looking to raise up a tasty goat. The way my family eats it- put on a bathtub of hot oil, to about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then throw the goat in, head first; stomp on it with snowshoes until tender and soupy. Pour over table and serve hot with a side of baby tiger.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of good information.......2006-11-17

My husband & I bought this book as a reference a year ago as we were researching on how we could "raise meat goats for profit." The book was very helpful in explaining everything we needed to consider as we began our farm. This book is excellent and I just want to remind folks buying it take Ms. Bowman's advice and do the research into what will work for you in your particular geographical area. Raising meat goats outside of the Southwest seems to be a recent phenomenon and northern regions have different vegetations to consider. If we had not followed that advice, we could have easily over bought hay and supplements if we hadn't had our local extension office come out and analyze our grazing areas and hay fields. This could potentially save you hundreds of dollars. My only criticism of this book is that it does not address miscarriage/aborted pregnancies and how to treat the nanny after.

4 out of 5 stars Raising Meat Goats for Profit.......2006-11-10

A good reference for the potential meat goat breeder. A little outdated, but the facts and information are all topical and well documented.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of good information.......2007-09-29

A great book for goat beginners-- lots of good, practical information. However, it does not seem geared toward those not pursuing the natural/organic approach to farming/livestock rearing, which we are. We're glad to have this book as a reference. But we are also glad to have a great friend who has been naturally/organically raising dairy goats for three decades as a good, solid resource for our "natural" questions.

    5 out of 5 stars great book!.......2007-09-22

Good and reliable information. If you are looking for an all around book that accurately covers the bases, than this is it.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Start.......2007-08-03

We were looking for information about goats. Milk is something we still buy from grocery stores and the possibility of making our own dairy products was interesting enough to look into. Not knowing anything about goats, we had to start somewhere.

I read the reviews below, and this looked like a good place to start. I can agree with much of what has been said by earlier reviewers, but still found this book to be worth the price and time to read. Yeah, it's not exhaustive - but I wasn't looking for the only reference on goats I'd ever need. It is directed towards dairy, rather than meat, and the information on handling milk and arranging work areas was useful. There was some discussion of the business aspects of dairy goats. A profitable business can require some hard decisions and callouse handling of livestock. These may not be some of the more pleasant aspects of raising livestock, but the author did not devote a tremendous amount of print to that aspect.

If you haven't raised goats and think there may be some possibilities, this is a good place to start.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Informative!.......2007-05-11

This is a great book for the beginner, like me. It touches on everything from A-Z and I can't believe how much I learned from 1 book. It is an easy read, has a great glossary. I feel like when I buy my first goats, I'll know better what to look for & how to prepare for them.

5 out of 5 stars Storey's Guide to Raising Dairy Goats.......2007-04-04

Probably the best investment for a new dairy goat owner or anyone considering owning a dairy goat. Lots of information on different breeds, housing, health problems, and general information. This long time favorite and backyard goat owners handbook has stood the test of time with good reason.

Mario Vargas Llosa, a former candidate for the presidency of Peru, is better placed than most novelists to write about the machinations of Latin American politics. In The Feast of the Goat he offers a vivid re-creation of the Dominican Republic during the final days of General Rafael Trujillo's insidious and evil regime. Told from several viewpoints, the book has three distinctive, alternating strands. There is Urania Cabral, the daughter of Trujillo's disgraced secretary of state, who has returned to Santo Domingo after more than 30 years. Now a successful New York lawyer, Urania has never forgiven her aging and paralyzed father, Agustín, for literally sacrificing her to the carnal despot in the hope of regaining his political post. Flipping back to May of 1961, there is a group of assassins, all equally scarred by Trujillo, waiting to gun the Generalissimo down. Finally there is an astonishing portrait of Trujillo--the Goat--and his grotesque coterie. Llosa depicts Trujillo as a villain of Shakespearean proportions. He is a preening, macho dandy who equates his own virility with the nation's health. An admirer of Hitler "not for his ideas but for the way he wore a uniform" (fittingly he equips his secret police force with a fleet of black Volkswagen Beetles), Trujillo even has his own Himler in Colonel Abbes Garcia, a vicious torturer with a predilection for the occult.

As the novel edges toward Trujillo's inevitable murder, Urania's story gets a bit lost in the action; the remaining narratives however, are rarely short of mesmerizing. Trujillo's death unleashes a new order, but not the one expected by the conspirators. Enslaved by the soul of the dead chief, neither they nor the Trujillo family--who embark on a hideous spree of bloody reprisals--are able to fill the void. Llosa has them all skillfully outmaneuvered by the puppet-president Joaquín Belaguer, a former poet who is the very antithesis of the machismo Goat. Savage, touching, and bleakly funny, this compelling book gives an all too human face to one of Latin America's most destructive tyrants. --Travis Elborough, Amazon.co.uk

    Book Description

Haunted all her life by feelings of terror and emptiness, 49-year-old Urania Cabral returns to her native Dominican Republicand finds herself reliving the events of 1961, when the capital was still called Trujillo City and one old man terrorized a nation of three million. Rafael Trujillo, the depraved ailing dictator whom Dominicans call the Goat, controls his inner circle with a combination of violence and blackmail. In Trujillos gaudy palace, treachery and cowardice have become a way of life. But Trujillos grasp is slipping. There is a conspiracy against him, and a Machiavellian revolution already underway that will have bloody consequences of its own. In this masterpiece of Latin American and world literature, and one of the finest political novels ever written (Bookforum), Mario Vargas Llosa recounts the end of a regime and the birth of a terrible democracy, giving voice to the historical Trujillo and the victims, both innocent and complicit, drawn into his deadly orbit.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Folly of a Demigod.......2007-06-23

Without doubt, this is the finest biographical fiction ever written. As he stated in a Wall Street Journal interview today, literature is a powerful tool to further the cause of human rights and liberty, and Mr Vargas Llosa's talents are superior in every respect, whether developing the inexorable progress of the parallel plots of the dictator's amoral indulgences, the simple assassins' hopelesssly ambitious revolutionary plot, or the innocent victim's path to the slaughter. Each character is painted with translucent brush strokes, picturing clearly understandable actors in this horrific drama. The story is laced with graphic violence and sex, butr never gratuitously. In the end, Trujillo's arrogant abuse of power, which he believed was granted by God, consumes him ferociously after demeaning his masculinity. The fate of the tyrant is never as severe as deserved.

5 out of 5 stars understated report on a true tyrany.......2007-01-12

This is a magnificent portrayal of one of the most heinous dictatorships ever to arise in the new world. This is not fiction,on the contrary it is a modification of the truth so as not to completly horrify the readers. My grandfather,my father ,two uncles and one aunt were assasinated in the most violent way by the Trujillo regime. Please excuse my outburst. The writing is very good as befits one of latin america's leading writers.Vargas Llosa depicts very well the strugle of a people in there quest for freedom.

5 out of 5 stars Memories of a recent past!.......2006-11-12

From the talented pen of Mario Vargas Llosa, this book received a very warm reception in its moment, The story is narrated in two times; the arrival in of a mysterious woman to visit his father, and the primary plot in those opprobrious times of Leonidas Trujillo, a unscrupulous politician accustomed to enjoy of these well known pleasures but above all by his non dissimulated cynicism with all those who surrounded him and acidic despotism, that eventually will determine and become his nemesis.

A profound reflection about corruption and decadence from the high spheres of the power. Any similarity with another tropical dictator is a mere coincidence.

    Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Trujillo the dictator, seen from varying perspectives.......2006-09-24

This is a curious book. It's a novelized look back at Rafael Trujillo, the dictator of the Dominican Republic from the 1930's until the 1960's.

Trujillo ruled largely through fear. He was the contemporary of and precursor to other Latin American dictators. Finally, his brand of rule led to his assassination.

In this novel, Trujillo is seen through the eyes of people close to him or of his inner circle, people who were generally treated badly.

One is the psychologically damaged daughter of a Trujillo-era Senator, a man disgraced by the old dictator; the others are military plotters of Trujillo's assassination.

Vargas Llosa has written a curious book - a book which jumps from one set of characters to another, and changes voices as it does. At times, the book seems to have a disjointed quality, yet it is interesting for its look back at a corrupt society and how that society came to its end.

4 out of 5 stars Quality inventive journalism, prolix to a fault.......2006-06-26

The story of a manipulative dictator is told here from both sides, showing us the terror and the stability that a man like Trujillo (or even Saddam Hussein or Josef Stalin) brings to a nation with fundamental fractures in its culture and people. Vargas Llosa introduces his characters and the topic so subtly that it seems to grow around the reader, marking a path for descent. Insights about government and people abound. While all of it is well written, there doesn't need to be as much of it as there is, and it doesn't need to be as strikingly "emotional" (translation: obvious). Any more of that and it would become a coffee table book for hand-wringing pill cases. As it is however, it is well-written and an engrossing exploration of this topic without the usual moralizing that makes such books as tedious as a root canal.

    Product Description

PreSchool-Grade 2 Only the familiar plot of this well-known Norwegian folktale is recognizable in this revision. Gone is the cadence and beauty of G. W. Dasent's translation of Asbjornsen and Moe's text, found in Marcia Brown's version (HBJ, 1957; o.p.). Instead there is language devoid of rhythm and mystery. In addition, unnecessary motivations are ascribed to the characters that serve to explain the reason for their violent actions (the troll is hungry; the big Billy Goat Gruff is angry). These explanations serve only to dilute the power of the story. The full-color illustrations are humorous; the goats walk about on their hind legs, the smallest goat wears a diaper and sucks a pacifier, and the biggest wears a black leather jacket, to reinforce the point that he is tough enough to destroy the troll. The troll is quite scary, and although he does have a nose as long as a poker, his eyes are not as big as saucers; the illustration that introduces the troll does not even show his eyes. A better purchase is Galdone's version (Clarion, 1981) which is well-suited for use with large groups and more closely follows the standard translation. Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, Conn. 5 out of 5 stars A current favorite.......2007-10-02

This has fast become one of my 2 year old's favorites. She can already recite the book almost word for word using different voices for each Billy Goat Gruff. We get a real kick out of listening to her "read" to herself!

5 out of 5 stars Three Billy Goats-GREAT.......2007-04-04

I was just reminded of this teriffic retelling of Three Billy Goats Gruff. The suspense and pacing are brilliant. The illustrations are gorgeous AND funny. It was one of my all-time favorite read-alouds when I was a children's librarian. Galdone never failed in capturing the kids' imagination and story hour was always the better with one of his books. A MUST HAVE!

5 out of 5 stars The illustrations are priceless!.......2007-01-23

A delightful retelling of the old story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. This particular book stands out from all the others because of the illustrations, which are priceless! E.g., for the trip across the bridge, the bigger goats dress up the littlest one in a diaper; the biggest goat suits up in a black leather motorcycle jacket and dark glasses!

The book is as much fun for grownups as it is for children!

5 out of 5 stars Two naaahs up for the Billy Goats Gruff.......2007-01-19

I used the book for a class I'm teaching on goats to 3-4 year olds. The story was a great success with group. The children were able to take what they learned about goats and see it pictured in the story. Example, goats have beards, horns and hooves. All of these features are beautifuuly illustrated on each page.
F.Y.I. Many of the children were happy to see the troll wasn't killed only pushed off the bridge. It is sonething to mention if it goes unnoticed.
Overall I highly recommend this version over any other I have seen out there because of the illustrations, simple text and story flow.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite rendition of the classic fairy tale. .......2006-10-23

The kids just hoot when they see the biggest and meanest billy goat gruff dressed like a motorcyle dude in his leather jacket and sunglasses. The three billy goats (personified) have a problem and put their heads together to hatch a plan. They outsmart the ugly troll who lives under the bridge and finally enjoy a picnic of fresh green grass (checkered blanket, plates and all) on the other side of the bridge.

    Book Description

Spenser has gone to London -- and not to see the Queen. He's gone to track down a bunch of bombers who've blown away his client's wife and kids. His job is to catch them. Or kill them. His client isn't choosy.

But there are nine killers to one Spenser -- long odds. Hawk helps balance the equation. The rest depends on a wild plan. Spenser will get one of the terrorists to play Judas Goat -- to lead him to others. Trouble is, he hasn't counted on her being very blond, very beautiful and very dangerous.

"Spenser is Boston's answer to James Bond...with a little Sam Spade and Nero Wolfe thrown in...Irreverent, witty, worldly...makes for fast, amusing reading." (Pittsburgh Press)

4 out of 5 stars Another Good Early Spenser.......2007-09-10

THE JUDAS GOAT is the fifth Spenser novel, and it's the first book where Spenser and his friend Hawk work as a team in solving a case. Some people consider this the best Spenser book of all time. Although I wouldn't go that far, it's still a very enjoyable read.

The plot of THE JUDAS GOAT is unique, because it involves Spenser chasing after terrorists in Europe. This sounds more exciting than it really is, because much of the book is devoted to Spenser shadowing the terrorists instead of confronting them. The terrorists also have surprisingly bland personalities -- I didn't really feel they were very strong villains for the most part.

Still, this book has great dialogue (mostly between Spenser and Hawk) and some great action scenes once things get rolling. I think the major reason to read THE JUDAS GOAT is to enjoy the fun Spenser/Hawk chemistry, which makes them one of the great teams in crime fiction. Their partnership became somewhat stale in the later Spenser books, but it's really fresh and exciting in this early novel.

    Three and a half stars.

5 out of 5 stars Less rhetoric, more action makes for much more enjoyable read.......2007-05-28

Although I'm one who doesn't mind a more cerebral book, typically, I found the first few books in the Spenser series to be a bit overfull of rhetoric and therefore lacking in the essential action necessary in a PI novel. Not "The Judas Goat." Here the action takes us across the pond to London, Holland and Amsterdam, then back to Montreal where Spenser - with the help of Hawk (I was so happy to see him again!) - foils an attempt to kill one or more participants in the Olympic games.

I have noticed a trend in the Spenser books so far; the descriptions on the back covers (at least on the newly released reprints in mass markets paperback) have very little to do with what actually goes on in the books. From the description on the back of this one, I expected there would be an affair between Spenser and the woman involved with the terrorists, but that wasn't the case (not that she didn't make a move). Although I am not one who likes stories spoiled by overly descriptive descriptions, I do like a small blurb on a book that is ACCURATE so I know basically what a story is about before I buy it. Just a thought in passing.

This was the first of the Spenser novels that I really could sink my teeth into; not that I didn't like the first few, but this was the first one I REALLY loved. I am going to enjoy getting through the rest of the massive pile I have awaiting my attention!

5 out of 5 stars Private Eye Soliloquy Goes to International Rap. King Kong is Blond. Straw-Topped Gorilla Spews Blood of Carnage. .......2006-10-11

In THE JUDAS GOAT Spenser made the TRANSITION from lone-and-lonely Private Eye to team player and dialogue master. Since Robert B. Parker is admittedly a guy who thrives on baseball, and since Hawk is the perfect rap partner to call forth Spenser's soul, the transition was obvious yet seamless. To me this shift almost felt as if it were written in the stars, maybe even on The Players' cards.

Yep, here it is, the beginning of Parker's famous rap/jazz dialogue, with Spenser and Hawk tossing brand-new (talking) "baseballs" back-and-forth, carrying them through to home plate conclusions. The pair of Black-and-White-Knights culminated this particular plot conversation at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, doing an award-winning street-scuffle with a whale-of-a-man named Zachary. You'll wanna see that event. You won't be able to read it because the words become vision. You'll see it.

To me, the point of departure was clear, the point at which the dialogue rhythm picked up its signature beat. The grand overture occurred halfway into this plot. I've marked the page. The movement seemed to emerge from Hawk's ebony hues and blues, and Spenser's playful counterpoint. This # 5 book in the Spenser sequence is the first one in which Hawk and Spenser worked together in a true duet, which allowed Spenser to contrast himself to Hawk, expanding the awareness of their common bonds, and filling in some of the dots of the drawn lines separating each man's code.

Hawk does have a code, with basically one main rule, and it's expressed succinctly (of course) by him in this novel. The key in that rule is "word." But, Hawk's words expressing it can't be beat. You'll want to read (and reread) them, from him, within this plot.

The first half of this book was so different from the last half I was surprised the binding didn't split. As the story took flight with Spenser preparing to go to London accompanied by enough fire power to do the job, as he was preparing to understand and follow the rules for passing those accouterments through airport security, I was carried along nicely, with heightened awareness of the contrast between then and now. Ironically, this plot, taking place in 1976 (probably conceived and composed a year or so prior to the 1978 copyright), dealt with terrorism and international travel, giving an uncanny prelude to today's necessity of intensified caution.

Parker gave just enough daily detail of Spenser's travel routines, airport machinations, plane ride, and settling into London. Spenser didn't have an easy time getting a lead onto the trail on the 9 amateur terrorists who blew up his wheel-chair bound client and family, but the super sleuth spent the delay prior to "connect" as a frustrated but true tourist. I was impressed by the effective simplicity of the technique Spenser used to accomplish his link, and how he played it out.

The Judas Goat theme was well executed, yet that theme and a few others Parker touched on (including the James Bond mystique) each applied tangy twists on well-seated stereotypes. As terrorists freely and guiltlessly blew up innocent people, Parker set gentle, prose-tweaking-bombs under stereotypes, including some of the cultural icons we've come to relish and revere. Yet, Parker didn't diminish or desecrate those icons; he toyed with them with such subtle humor it sometimes slid right by me (except in the case of the Kidney Pie, which he did not treat with kid gloves).

In this plot Parker developed yet another intriguing female psychological type, Katherine Caldwell (who had at least 4 other alias's), into an interesting character with both warm and cold blood, as he slithered around another stereotype. I understand why Parker did what he did for this woman, in the conclusion of the plot. It was necessary for me to carefully reread the words in his explanation, about this soul-broken James Bond lady (and her comparison to Hawk), to get to the core of Spenser's reasoning. I don't know how to explain this without giving away too much. I also enjoyed the way Spenser skirted around Kathie's ambiguous sexuality, which provided yet another twist in the established P.I. mystique.

Given the abundance of licorice twists in this plot, I wondered if Parker weren't a master at breaking those Rubitz Cube games. I wouldn't be surprised to discover he has designed a few. On the other hand, Robert B. translates their essence so exquisitely into fiction, maybe he wouldn't have energy left to engineer physical puzzle cubes.

Okay. NOW we come to the Olympic scuffle scene in the plot culmination, in which Spenser and Hawk confronted the head terrorist and side-kick (Zachary). The fight scene with Zachary, Spenser, and Hawk was awesome, even for a reader like me who generally seeks the types of mysteries which don't engage in down-home-brutal graphics.

As I began reading along into that scene I wondered how Parker would deal with that essential physical battle, and was thankful that I'd read enough of his novels to know he doesn't overdo (or under do) the detail, and that Spenser fights with enough finesse that his prose doesn't require ten pages of gore, of fists, foot kicks, and bat tricks transforming humans into immobilized pulp. Just as I had that smug thought, however, the scene descended into basic pulp.

Somehow, I admired that grit and gore scene?

Maybe it was the fact that Spenser and Hawk were described from a never-lost mental-perspective of a potent and clear intent to come through the gauntlet intact, with the villain (who was one of the best characterizations of a true bad brut I've read) exactly where he had earned himself to be.

Whatever it was which caused me to read those scenes with appreciation for the gut-level-fighting craft, without flinching, without closing the book and tossing it into the coal stove; whatever it was, I was impressed enough to attempt to describe it as bait, then hand over the book to my husband to read through the fight, from the part where Zachary arrived and Spenser spotted him. Of course I took covert glances at my husband's face as he read (at the breakfast table). It was interesting to me that in several passages he grinned or laughed out loud. That response allowed me to realize that Parker's humor was part of what kept the fight detail from overwhelming my squeamishness and losing me, even as I could easily see why grittier souls could be pleasantly entertained by the humorless type of physically painful intensity which I avoid.

Parker's various skills as an author are so subtly intricate, I often miss the literary finesse until I begin writing a review, working to zero-in on exactly what caused my ability to be in the story at a solid level of anticipatory engrossment.

I reread the fight scene after Tom (my husband) had read it. I was looking for what parts made him laugh, and easily found them.

    You done good, Parker. Again.

A straw gorilla, indeed. No, he was more of a cross between the bad side of Frankenstein, and The Hulk, with a blond crew cut.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent early Spenser. Reveals his first name!.......2006-03-05

This is one of my favorites of the Spenser novels. Brisk pacing, realistic handling of weapons and tactics, and a very clear depiction of the difference between Hawk's and Spenser's approaches to difficult situations.

Bonus: Parker reveals Spenser's first name! I find it odd that few people seem to have noticed this. Pay close attention to Spenser's parting dinner conversation with Susan; she says his first name plain as day. (It's my brother's first name as well, so I approve).

Update: As a commenter pointed out, the sequence I thought revealed Spenser's first name was in fact a game in which Susan and Spenser banter as Marshal Matt Dillon and Miss Kitty. Chalk up my misunderstanding to a lifetime spent without watching a single episode of Gunsmoke.

4 out of 5 stars [Judas Goat] Spenser as a Charles Bronson type.......2005-05-26

The Judas Goat is lively and engaging and doesn't get hung up on character development. Spenser goes to Europe to hunt down terrorists. There is no "detecting," and the banter between him and his girlfriend Susan Silverman is mercifully limited.

I came back to this book after reading several of the more recent Spenser novels and really appreciated "Judas Goat"'s brisk pacing and straightforward action.

5 out of 5 stars Gregory the Terrible Eater.......2007-03-14

This is one of my favorite children's books. There are lots of lessons for ongoing analogies. But the best part is that the book is funny and loved by kids.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-11-19

This book is a disappointment. Kids may get a laugh out of it, but they won't learn anything about eating well. I hesitate to give it to any of my grandchildren!

5 out of 5 stars Quite funny to very young kids.......2005-12-30

Gregory, a young goat, likes junk food - all the stuff his parents don't want him to eat. They try everything, taking him to the doctor and even letting him stuff himself with junk food and getting a belly-ache from it. How can they get Gregory to stop eating carrots and eggs and salad and start eating proper, healthy food - like shirts and shoes and tires??

Kids will laugh at the backwards problem in the book and the illustrations, while not superb, ARE very funny. Added bonus, of course, is the message about eating balanced meals, always a hard sell to french fry fans.

    4 out of 5 stars Cute.......2005-04-24

Very cute book about poor Gregory who only likes healthy people foods! My daughter enjoys the story and pointing out the different items that the goats eat like TV sets and ties!

5 out of 5 stars All Time Favorite.......2004-11-10

Grandparents - Here is the perfect gift - a funny beautifully illustrated book about a goat, his strange eating habits, and his worried parents. I have read this treasure over and over to my grandson, begining at age three. I laugh just thinking about Gregory the goat! I marvel at the imagination of the author who wrote it.

Every child age 5 and under on my gift list is getting a copy of this book for Christmas. Now it could be that I have a special love for goats, having raised several for a number of years, and...my grandson's father is named Gregory! Regardless, every child will love the illustrations, the very funny story of the little goat's desire to please his parents, the visit to the town dump, the wise advice to the parents from an elderly ram, and the surprise ending. This is one funny book to read to little children!

5 out of 5 stars I enjoy reading this book!!.......2006-06-16

After reading through the book, I feel motivated to buy some goats. I bought a ranch and was interested in goats, but have never dealt with them. I already have dairy cows and am planning to do cheese processing. This book was extremely helpful at giving knowledge in all areas from the different type of goats to expenses in raising goats. It mixes hard facts and data, like nuitritional contents of certain feed and the needs of a milking goat, to the more human side, like talking with your goats and how to reduce their stress. I think this book is well written in simple language by someone who understands what a novice needs to know to even try goat milking as a farm activity. This is a definite must book for neophytes like me.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book that I had to own................2002-12-15

We have been around goats for decades, but have only recently in the past year gone the next step and begun to own Nubian goats for milk, cheese and brush removal purposes. And this is a great book if you are just getting started because it covered everything one needs to know before and after getting a goat or goats.

From housing, dairy goat rations, nutritional needs, goat management, choosing dams and sires (females and males), breeding and kidding (birthing), kid care, goat milk, udder care, health care, trouble shooting, and the overall benefits of keeping goats. And a section for those who want to have goats as a business i.e. milk, cheese, meat. And there is a good section on where to buy goats and supplies.

We live in the Sierras where we are encouraged to own goats for fire protection, since they are great at keeping brush clearer in high fire areas. And they are such wonderful animals to own and easily become members of the family.

1 out of 5 stars A little information, but mostly soft.......2002-10-18

This book provided me with a little information that I needed to know, but on the whole, was literary fluff. Luttman is sentimental and opinionated through out the book and has trouble stating facts. Even in a convincing way. For example, instead of saying that you 'cull' 'kill' or 'slaughter' an unneeded buck, she said that "you should do away with them". Avoid this book altogether, or borrow it from a local library, but if you need to buy one get Jerry Belanger's 'Storey's Guide to Raising Dairy Goats: Breeds, Care, Dairying'

5 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for the dairy goat owner..........2001-06-10

I am new to raising goats, and found this reference book to be extremely useful. My Alpines are in a herd with the woman who boards my horses, so I am not completely on my own, but having this book allowed me to expand my knowledge without having to email my friend every two minutes with another question!

Luttermann's book covers pretty much everything a goat keeper needs to know about dairy goats, although having been published in 1986 it might be a little out of date with regards to supplementation of various minerals such as copper. However one can find that info in other places, and its lack does not negate the value of this book.

Bottom line, if you're getting into goats, you should buy this book!
